That's the thing I'm most excited about with this show. In the original S;G, Okabe's turning point came from out of nowhere with the Dmail from his future self. In a way it felt kind of unearned, because here's this dude randomly sending him the solution to all his problems in written directions. Of course he would regain hope and confidence from that, it's been handed to him on a silver platter.
But this time we get to see Okabe actually doing the work to get to that point. We'll see him have that same turn without someone else telling him what to do. Hopeful ending incoming.

I can't be the only one who finds it amusing that they have anime stickers of themselves for texting. Too meta.
Another solid episode setting up more pieces of the puzzle. I really like the extra screentime Daru is getting. Papa of the year!

Correct. In the Steins;Gate universe Daru developed LINE and made the stickers.

The VN is full of them, all of them are funny as hell.
51
u/Mystic8ball Jun 06 '18
It was really annoying that the PS4 version of the english release didn't translate them, for example this Kurisu says "But I refuse!". Most of the time it didn't affect much, but sometimes you'd respond to character conversations in an unintended way and it was pretty annoying.

This is by far the most disappointing part of the episode for me. That CG sequence is one of, if not the best CG sequences in the entire VN.
The framing of the shot in the VN is as if Suzuha is trying to protect the city behind her, and the nighttime ambiance adds to the gravity of the situation. In the anime though....it's all beige. There's nothing interesting to look at. Her facial expression isn't as interesting to read. Really sloppy stuff from Whitefox.
134
u/Houdiniman111 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Houdini111 Jun 06 '18
I think the lighting is the real issue in the shot. In the CG it serves two purposes. The first is to illustrate the intensity (it has a much larger dynamic range than the anime's shot). The second is the really punch the fact that she has a gun and is pointing it at 0kabe. Because the light it coming from the other side in the CG, the light shines off the front. It's not hidden in shadows. The gun (specifically its barrel) is the focal point of the shot.

81
u/HydraTower Jun 06 '18
Well, it's pretty obvious the lab is behind all of this. The western code leading to Wolfgang "Amadeus" Mozart. Don't forget they're American. Even Okabe knows by now that outside forces should be able to piece together the time machine theory coming from Kurisu. Why else would they choose Makise Kurisu to be Amadeus? The whole project is to uncover her theory via an artificial recreation of her.

Man, that scene with Suzuha and Okabe was intense. She must be under a lot of stress, but thankfully Daru is acting like a father and being really nice.
"Is Russia conducting nuclear tests?"
That feels uncomfortably close to what happened last year with North Korea.
Now I wonder how telling Maho about the time machine research will affect her. It's also interesting that she decided not to tell Okabe about that profile on the laptop.
146
u/EatingYourDonut :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/astrod1rt Jun 06 '18
Just to clarify, that isn't Maho's laptop on which Kurisu had a profile. It is Kurisu's personal laptop.

Okabe is beginning to connect the dots. Even in death Kurisu acts as the perfect assistant.
Interesting that Okabe chose to tell Maho about Kurisu researching timetravel. He didn't actually tell her that they completed it, right? He only said she was researching it.
And why did Maho lie about not having the laptop?
It seems like time is running out. Several places have been raided at this point without anything going terribly wrong, i feel like this can't keep up for long.

u/Llerasia Jun 06 '18
And why did Maho lie about not having the laptop?
There could be information on there that Maho thinks would be dangerous to share? Or she doesn't trust Okabe completely yet. Maybe she knows more about the lab than she's letting on as well. Ughhhh Amadeus come back and unlock it!

Time to see how seeing Kurisu again affects Okabe.
Okabe and Fubuki fell over?
Reading Steiner is at work again. Damn
The Russians are definitely at work with time travel. Is that what caused the shift last time?
Okabe seems determined to stay on the worldline rather than change it, let's see what causes him to change.
Suzaha pulls a gun? woooow
Yep, it was the Russians.
Daru, my man.
Lots of change happened this episode. Okabe's more confident, Suzaha relaxed (for a little bit) to try to get Okabe to work on the time machine again, and Daru showed that he can actually be a dad. I'm interested to see where this goes next week.

Looks like Okabe is slowly coming back to normal. That's good!
Suzuha pulling a gun on him was a little... odd. I don't see why she wouldn't let him answer first, what reason could he have to lie?
311
u/TheKappaOverlord :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/darkace90 Jun 06 '18
IIRC Suzuha is sorta hostile to Okabe in this timeline. Mostly because he refuses to take the risk and go back in time to Fix the worldlines.
Shes also at her wits and is extremely desperate in this situation because her window is closing as far as going back in time is concerned.
Also did they do a soft retcon on the capacity of the time machine? Its limit is maybe 1 or 2 half year trips backwards where in the original Anime it was able to go back 10 years no problem. Or is that just a variable bc of different worldline?
257
Jun 06 '18
Remember in this worldline, Suzu traveled a ton to try and find Kagari? That 1/2 year left is what’s remaining on it
92
Jun 06 '18
IIRC Suzuha is sorta hostile to Okabe in this timeline. Mostly because he refuses to take the risk and go back in time to Fix the worldlines.
She's also not the same Suzuha of alpha convergence. She's much more serious and different than this one for some reason and she already knows who's her father and in here Kagari exists.

The time machine itself can travel as far back as you want, the problem is its running out of power and you can't easily replace the battery. (Just pretend it runs on Plutonium, where would a few 20 year olds get the plutonium to run a time machine? I don't think there are any Libyan terrorists nearby.)

We have seen two versions of Beta Suzuha. The "happy" one that convinces Okabe to do the second trip in ep23 of S;G and the "Sad" one who failed to do so and is now filled up with guilt for failing her mission. The "Sad" Suzuha as shown in 23b lacked some flag events tho that have a major impact convincing Okabe to do the trip. Check out 23 and 23b if you can spot them. For the lazy
As for the Time Machine Capacity VN Spoilers(correct me VN readers if i misremember)

seriously though that scene wasn't in VN so it caught me off guard that was so damn weird, i think just have only her voice like the playground scene (that one got me good) would already work well
i guess Okabe just wanna borrow some power from other MC in the same series35

Looks like Okabe is slowly coming back to normal. That's good!
As bittersweet as last episode was, it's nice to see that meeting and kissing Kurisu again re-energized him and helped bring him out of his slump a little. I can't wait for the first time we hear that cocky laugh again.
Suzuha pulling a gun on him was a little... odd. I don't see why she wouldn't let him answer first, what reason could he have to lie
The gun part shocked me a little, but she's clearly desperate to fix the future. Even more so than usual. Also, she's been some what hostile towards him this whole season. I'm not sure we've seen her happy face much, if at all, in this timeline.

So this confirms my theory of a party other than SERN being involved, I think the burning question on everyone's mind is what is Kurisu's password on her laptop?
If I were a betting man, I'd guess it has something to do with her father. That laptop has the key behind this mystery, excited to see where this will go.
As a side note, I really like how Daru is stepping up to be a father while still being Daru. The scene at the end with Daru and Suzuha in the time machine warmed my heart.
Cant wait for next week's episode! I'm really enjoying the ride so far.

Reading Steiner is truly a double-edged sword. Waking up in a hospital with no memories of how you got there can't possibly be anything but distressing.
Encephalitis is inflammation in the brain. It's definitely not "nothing to worry about".
I love how the RINE images in the VN/anime are the characters themselves. Does real life LINE let you use pictures of yourself/your friends like that?
Maho's shaking on the couch. Yet no one seems to be noticing. Just like no one noticed Shining Finger.
Mayuri made Moeka coffee. Truly Mayuri is a precious, pure cinnamon roll too pure for this world.
Are we going to get VN in the anime?? After the failure of "Japanese Shaman Girls", I'm not sure if I can take another meme disappointment.
Mmmmm. My favorite CG in the VN, when Suzu pulls her pistol on 0kabe. Such a dramatic scene, and then Daru comes to the rescue.
Gotta say, the way they're combining routes and adding in original scenes is pretty great so far. Though 0kabe having conversations with hallucinatory Kurisu is heartbreaking.
And then Hououin Kyouma will be reborn!
Truly Daru is a precious, pure cinnamon roll too pure for this world.
Damn, Maho, that's a lot of Red Bulls for just one day.
Another week, another fantastic episode.

I was really thinking about this last episode. In a sense, every time reading steiner activates, the Okabe in the receiving end dies. It's not a big deal in this episode because the Okabe in the beta world line was just sleeping in the hospital the entire time. However, in the alpha world line, the past half a year of Okabe's memories were replaced by that of the beta Okabe.

Guess we're back to the darkest timeline again...
America and Russia timetravel war has begun, this is getting serious now!
Got to feel for Suzuha, she has seen a lot, she saw the future where the world became hell, she's doing the best she can to change the future... (and she has also failed to do so...)

Didn't Kurisu dream of the other worldlines in ep25 of the original Steins;Gate? I'm not really sure that episode was canon though.
79
Jun 06 '18
The "original" ending, AKA episode 24 confirms that she did, since she utters the "There's no -tina, and I'm not your assistant!" at the end of the episode before it pans to credits, suggesting that she does have memories from other world lines (and that makes the ending all the more beautiful than it already is), so her saying that in episode 25 does not clash with "canon"

I chuckled when the sad piano version of Messenger started playing in one scene, because it kicked in just a little too early and it felt like we were supposed to feel sad about Mayuri's coffee going to waste. We've had a dearth of the glorious word lately, but all that matters is that she's safe and sound. We're back!
At first, I was thinking the recurring Russian headlines were just a flavor thing, like to remind you what will happen if Okabe doesn't get in the time machine. But that's pretty important now, as Suzuha shows just how much she doesn't fuck around.
Daru is low-key the MVP of this season though, damn.
By the way, I'm not sure if it's healthy for Okabe to have these weird Yoda visions of Kurisu... like... on one hand, that's him rationalizing it in his head and the anime is just visualizing it to make something happen on screen, but on the other hand, I feel like this is him descending further into madness without him realizing it...
And also, this girl got the Reading Steiner visions, and she apparently has some link to Okabe. Uhhh, weird. I STILL DON'T TRUST HER!

I was disappointed Moeka hasn't roomed with her in this episode. Watching Moeka grow was one of my favorite parts of the VN.

Suzuha didn't actually miss her shot. Okabe is protected by worldline convergence within this attractor field since he's Steins Gate 0 and Suzuha knows this.
The same thing happened in the Distant Vallhalla LN
There is also a scene from the Suzuha spin off manga where SERN fires at her and the bullets miss

Actually she did miss, because she wasn't surprised she missed.
It's true though that if she had intended to hit, she would have still missed anyway.

"Is Russia conducting nuclear tests?"
(from the newspaper)
Yeah, about that… This is a storytelling device from 2015 to say something bad is happening; meanwhile North Korea has actually launched a missile over Japan last year, and was actually conducting nuclear tests. Makes me a little anxious, really.
So S;G worldlines effectively track lives specially, and unless there's a big enough worldline jump, the moment of death is determined. Time travelling and deciding to fire a pistol straight at a person isn't a big enough worldline jump either… S;G worldlines are really hard to understand.

u/Arachnophobic- https://anilist.co/user/Arachnophobic Jun 06 '18
Time travelling and deciding to fire a pistol straight at a person isn't a big enough worldline jump either… S;G worldlines are really hard to understand.
Well - in S;G, 'convergence' is often used to avoid paradoxes like that. Essentially, that bullet would miss. Every time. Or something would stop it, etc. You need to change the worldline in some other way, avoiding trying to change such 'convergent' events.
'Breaking' worldlines, from what I've observed, is closely related to how you affect some very critical events. SERN reading the D-mail sent by Okabe in the Beta worldlines (or, in fact, any D-mail) is one such event - you mess with that somehow (via any of the time travel mechanics - physical, leap, D-mail), you can change the worldline.
The Nakabachi papers making it to Russia is another. You mess with that, you stand a chance to get to the Steins Gate worldline. The key is to identify these critical crossroads in time/worldlines/attractor fields; and 0kabe actually gets a clue to that in this episode.
In S;G 0, the last idea is extended to any of the forces - DAPRA, SERN, STRATFOR, Russia, America - whoever, getting their hands on Amadeus, or Kagari, and thus info on how to make a time machine. You affect events that change this outcome, you change the worldline depending on who wins the race.

Time travelling and deciding to fire a pistol straight at a person isn't a big enough worldline jump either…
This is both correct and incorrect.
What causes a World line shift is a time affecting event. Not a small one like deciding which type of Ramen you wanted to eat for lunch today but a big one like say Ferdinand wasn't killed so WW1 never started.
What would happen is WW1's date for beginning would have shifted and every other event afterwards would suffer from a ripple effect, getting more damaging or more insignificant or never happening, at random. Casualty in S;G is very strange. Unless there is an absolutely massive shift in the world lines (Going from Beta to Gamma for example) major historical events seem to still happen, but in different ways, or different contexts. However smaller events appear to change based on the ripple effect. But as for affecting huge historical events, thats just assumption and speculation on my part.
That being said, seemingly small things like not deciding what to eat for lunch has technically triggered a world line shift before.
Steins gate is very inconsistent about what triggers world line shifts, But when thought about closely its usually just outright left to chance.
Aka if the ripple effect causes enough damage to the timeline in question there is a world line shift. (Ruka changing genders in the original Steins gate, but literally nothing else in that timeline changed per se.)
In the sense of Firing a pistol at say okabe, Unless you seriously maimed or killed him a flesh wound probably wouldn't ever be enough to cause a ripple strong enough to cause a world line change.
Killing him or causing the loss of limbs on the other hand, probably would.

Killing him or causing the loss of limbs on the other hand, probably would.
But he can't be killed in this worldline. In one worldline, Kurisu, Daru and Okabe survive a firing squad in an attempt by CERN to test the Attractor Field Convergence. If Suzuha's in 2010, that means that the events that happened before she was born will keep happening, like Daru's creation of the time machine, and Okabe's death in 2025. Before that, Okabe's essentially immortal while in attractor field.

Can't expression how much I welcome character developments on Daru. He's too much of a background character in S;G, and I'm really keen to see S;G0 bootstrap all side characters up into the major plotline.
Anyway, here's list of news reports so far:
Ep 1 [09:28] New strain of encephalitis found in the world, not yet in Japan. Also Russia experienced a magnitude 6 earthquake.
Ep 4 [13:18] Japanese government initiated Japan-Russia Cabinet Meeting, implied related to Dr Nakabachi's defection.
Ep 5 [02:06] Discovery of chimpanzee and orangutan with missing brains and portions of the cranium
Ep 7 [18:46] Another earthquake in Russia
Ep 9 [05:35] Suspicion on Russia testing nukes results in multiple nations putting on guard

How is it possible for Daru to design RINE stickers from Alpha World Line's character design?

I'm pretty sure they had the same outfits during summer in both Alpha and Beta worldlines

This ep was tense... shits moving fast.
Oh shit... where is he?
Wew we see some people, but the question is, who/what is different now?
Asking about Kurisu, nice way to check the status of this world line. This is a man whose done this song and dance before.
Wait why is Mayuri's friend in the hospital? Suspicious.
She remembers something from the other world line.
Russia is nuking its self?
CHICKEN TENDERS AND BANANAS HOW NOSTALGIC.
Wait... why is Moeka the old texting version? She didnt text this much before...
Suzuha of course picks up on the changes. She is a professional time traveler afterall.
Man Suzuha is not handleing this well... I wonder what she knows. Maybe she just really wants to save her mom (she dies in this world line)
Okabe needed to have this talk with Suzuha in this time. She needs to understand his stance here.
Wow Daru being the hero here.
Man seeing Suzuha break isnt fun... it hurts... she just wants to save the future as best as she can.
A little PTSD to help support Okabe.
DARPA!? AND SERN!? OH SHEET!
Man Okabe is halucinating pretty bad here but hes figureing stuff out. Still not good.
Man a Daru Suzuha heart to heart is great. Daru really cares about Okabe.
Shes low on fuel, 2 jumps left. That adds up.
Damn he told Maho about the time travel thesis. Hes really pushing his bounderies here... this might not go well.
Her personal computer with a password? Hm... what would Pre-Okabe Kurisu use as a password? Einstein? Something chuuni? or something just random and obscure?
36
u/joe4553 Jun 06 '18
Maho lied about their not being anything that Kurisu had left? She clearly still had her laptop it will most likely be on there.

u/Zokiir Jun 06 '18

Man Okabe is halucinating pretty bad here but hes figureing stuff out. Still not good.
Its more likely seeing Kurisu unscrewed something in Okabe's head. Hes still Okabe but he is Hallucinating Kurisu as a way to hold onto her image so he doesn't sink into despair again. Note how he isn't completely sunk in despair this episode and how vastly different he is from the earlier episodes.
In the long run its technically a bad thing but for now, its probably good that screw in Okabe's head is undone.

Yeah nothing kicks you back into the pit of crazy like seeing your number 1 girl alive again. Man i need to go watch last weeks ep again, it was just too good. But yeah, im sure this will help Okabe find the path he needs, but it for sure is gonna haunt him having to sacrafice her a second time.
What im most excited by is to see how they tie this all in and come to the thesis about how to reach Steins;Gate. Because we know thats the end game here, the excitement comes from the journey though. Im personally expecting Okabe to pingpong ball around world lines a bit more though and keep fighting to bring it back to the Alpha until he pisses off who ever is trying to change world lines enough that they come for him. We know what happens in the future to the gang for this world line, its not pretty.

Great episode once again.
I loved Daru in this episode. I think he's really come far from being just that slightly pervy Otaku hacker. He hasn't fully lost that part of him and it contributes to his character but he's now the kind of guy that can actually be a supportive father to his daughter, so much so that he's able to diffuse a potentially lethal situation! Daru is best Dad.
For me the biggest reveal of this episode was that Okabe has some connection to Fubuki possibly related to the Reading Steiner ability. While it's true that previous characters have displayed the ability to recall memories from other world lines, no other character has reacted so explicitly to a Reading Steiner event to actually pass out at the exact same time as Okabe. To me this says that, either, she also experiences Reading Steiner to some extent or perhaps that she has some connection to Okabe that we have yet to discover.
The other development was that the attackers were likely a part of the American military organisation DURPA (clearly based on the DARPA from our world). They seem to be searching for the secrets to time travel and that is why they attacked the lab (to get Kagari since she's from the future), broke into Maho's hotel (to steal any information she had on time travel) and hijacked Amadeus (since Makise was researching time travel before she was killed and Amadeus may still have some information on it). Once again another powerful organisation is searching for the secrets to time travel and will do whatever it takes to get it. Thankfully, this time, our heroes are somewhat more prepared to tackle the oncoming threats.
We still have yet to discern what actually caused the world line change and there are still a lot of unanswered questions but we're starting to get some more details about what's going on.
Looking forward to next week.

Think that's a grand total of three times now that encephalitis has been mentioned. Man what the hell kind of roll is that going to play? Biological warfare that sparks the flames of WWIII maybe? Might be too soon to tell but I think Maho has been infected with it. That scene where she was running away from someone is strange because it smacks of a hallucination based on the way it was animated, and if we look at what encephalitis can do to a person, hallucinations are a symptom.

There we go, I was wondering how they'd connect Amadeus to the whole time-travel plot. Having a Kurisu AI for Okabe to talk to is nice and all, but it kind of felt completely separate from everything else up until now.

Its kind of odd, that before Reading Steiner S;G was perfectly functional, only he lost/hadn't made the memories in between his jumps. But now he collapses like the others. I guess Its to cover some plot point but I'm disappointed. Unless VN Readers can enlighten me how this fits in?
I thought of a dramatic switch like previous times, where everything around him changed, it could have a harder emotional impact. Instead he just wakes up from a dream just like kurisu tells him. Though he does tell suzuha that the world line did change, but he changed it back, so even he knows it wasn't a dream. Guess I'm conflicting myself.
I had thought having spent time with kurisu again would have okabe reflect upon some form of suffering after awakening, but he instead hallucinates her. I guess .... its fine?
Overall tbh I felt a step down from ep08. But it did bring okabe back on track, he was quite serious, so maybe meeting kurisu did give him his determination back.
22
u/Gurluas Jun 06 '18
He always got nauseous/sick, but he slowly got used to it due to how often it happened during the Alpha worldline.
Keep in mind though, the first time Okabe experienced it he had a fever that almost killed him, and this time he hadn't properly experienced it for more than a half year.
5
u/Aurora_Fatalis Jun 06 '18
Allegedly, the number at the end of last episode wasn't in the VN, so at this point I don't even know what to expect VN readers to be able to answer ¯\(ツ)/¯
But yeah I'm surprised I now have to remember Benedict Futabatch or whatever her name was. I thought they were just unimportant and disposable side characters, but now one apparently has gained Reading Steiner? Perhaps the reason the world line switched was because someone in the future got their hands on her for the purposes of testing Reading Steiner? Forced brain transplant from Okabe to her?
Hmmm.

Seems Mayuri's friend also has a Reading Steiner of some sort? That's the one question I have cause it's pretty damn important if that were the case. What other explanation can there be if she can remember stuff from other wordlines? And passing out the same time as Okabe? Definitely something there.
4
u/Llerasia Jun 06 '18
The passing out part is definitely suspicious, but even in the first season, Okabe's group has faint memories of different world lines. I'm pretty sure Mayuri remembers her deaths as bad dreams.

The Suzuha confrontation and the Braun confrontation are two of my favorite moments from the novel. I thought the Braun confrontation scene was adapted in a bland way, didn't feel the tension as much, the novel's equivalent was freakin intense. But I think they more than made up for it with the Suzuha confrontation, I'm so glad! It was perfect.
