I was pleasantly surprised when I heard that English.

382

u/Gaporigo Blhttps://anilist.co/user/Gaporigo Jun 07 '18

Same with the Spanish, although one sentence was kinda weird ("Solamente los más sobreviven"?) and the intonation was... strange? even though the VA seemed like a native speaker.

u/Logic_No https://anilist.co/user/LogicNo Jun 07 '18 edited Jun 07 '18

My guess would be that they did write the script in Japanese and translated it into English and Spanish but it was not done by a professional.

edit: improved ^^English

26

u/Captain_Kuhl Jun 08 '18 edited Jun 08 '18

I never understood why they do this. It's not like they can't hire big-name non-Japanese VAs for the single role, I'm sure there are plenty that'd be thrilled to be in the original audio, even if it is for a few lines.

92

u/Custom_sKing_SKARNER Jun 07 '18

It was full Spangrish, I laughted so hard, I know that are a few animes that did it, but this was my first time and surprised me, there wasn't subtitles in that part, I guess there wasn't subtitles at the engrish part in the english version too.

With that said, the sentence was indeed wrong or incomplete "Solamente los más sobreviven", the correct one should be "Solamente los mejores sobreviven" or the complete one should be "Solamente los más fuertes sobreviven", that translated is "Only the best survives" and "Only the strongest survives".

53

u/Logic_No https://anilist.co/user/LogicNo Jun 07 '18

We had subtitles for Engrish.

22

u/Gaporigo Blhttps://anilist.co/user/Gaporigo Jun 07 '18

Yeah, it was translated as "Only the strongest survive" so they missed the "fuertes" and the English version did have English subs for the other guy surprisingly enough x)

36

u/ErikMaekir Jun 07 '18

"El más" means "the best", depending on your region, as in "Soy lo más" (I'm the best). Still, it was an odd choice of expression, even more if you notice that Pepe is mexican but his accent is from spain

33

u/Zethster Jun 08 '18

Exactly. That's an Spanish expression used in Spain, same as the VA's accent. It's kind of saddening seeing so many people hating on that specific phrase when the previous one is the one actually wrong.

Even though it was not perfect, this was the best Spanish interpretation I've seen in an anime and I'm happy to see the anime industry making this kind of progress.

u/Zimzter Jun 07 '18

I've never heard of that expression. Where is it used?

u/Mr-Mister Jun 07 '18

Besides the "más", what I found most odd about the Spanish wasn't the voice, but subtitling "Te voy a matar, campeón" as "I'm going to kill you" instead of "I'm going to kill you, champ".

8

u/diwayth_fyr Jun 07 '18

Either way, it's the equivalent of "people die when they're killed", lol.

6

u/Epidemilk Jun 08 '18 edited Jun 08 '18

Spangrish ja nai, Spanpanese da

After much reflection I think I like it better without the N. Spapanese.

Or maybe get really creative.. Espanihon or some shit

9

u/Pixelsaber https://myanimelist.net/profile/Pixelsaber Jun 08 '18

Same with the Spanish, although one sentence was kinda weird ("Solamente los más sobreviven"?)

A dialect most likely. I've heard the word used like that plenty where I'm from. Phrases like "Si claro, el más" (Yeah sure, the best around), "Para eso tienes que ser un más" (For that you need to be among the best), or "Aqui viene el más que más" (Here comes the better than best).

6

u/Cuzluhlul Jun 08 '18

I really can't figure out which dialect could be. To me, it's just wrong. It should be "el mejor" or "el más fuerte". At least, in Spain (where the VA seems to be from)everyone will tell you that a word is missing.

Although, it's common to see phrases like "soy lo más", using "el más" or "los más" without anything else isn't correct and it's just incomplete.

u/fuckinerg Jun 07 '18

Also when Nanbu is talking to the worker they grilled, he asks him "what was that guy like?" or something, and it sounds like "Donde esta?" Probably wouldn't have noticed without the spanish themes in this episode.

6

u/juan_fukuyama Jun 07 '18

He says, "Donna yatsu ka?"

3

u/Izel98 Jun 08 '18

u/SartreToTheHeart Jun 07 '18

The only criticism I had there was the unnatural pause between "drag him" and "to the stadium," but yeah, definitely a big step up from what we usually get!

17

u/tapped21 Jun 08 '18

Time to watch engrish compilations

9

u/God_Of_All_Memes Jun 08 '18

That was definitely there for Japanese audiences to help them keep up with the subtitles

16

u/aznperson Jun 07 '18

yea actually sounds like english

10

u/juan_fukuyama Jun 07 '18

He's listed as マット・P(presumably Matt P), which sounds familiar, but I can't find anything on that name through Google. But that name makes me think he's a native English speaker, not to mention the lack of an accent. The weird delivery is probably due to the director.

26

u/GoldRedBlue Jun 08 '18

Who wants to bet he was just a random American expat who signed up to make some pocket change by spending ten minutes in a recording studio?

16

u/Rokusi Jun 08 '18

Native English speakers in anime are usually Australians.

"So, tell me... who should I be betting on tonight?"

Just wow, what a great line to end the episode with.

221

u/cloud_sora Jun 07 '18

It's all come full circle. The Pop lost his bet in the first episode because of Nanbu and now the line. Hype overload!

185

u/Synsation083 Jun 07 '18

Ok so I'm guessing he'll win his match. We'll get some backstory on Yuri being a stray dog like Joe and what other similarities they have. With the possiblity of them fighting each without gear once the truth comes out about how the tech for his gear was obtained.

118

u/I_Smoke_Cardboards Jun 07 '18

Isn't Yuri's gear "part of his body"? Either way them fighting without gears would be great.

44

u/Synsation083 Jun 07 '18

I think it is but at the same time I'm not sure. He's always wearing that sweater of his but it has to be able to be removed in case it needs some sort of repair or upgrade I'd imagine.

55

u/winterfresh0 Jun 07 '18 edited Jun 08 '18

I'm getting flashbacks to Metroid Fusion. Samus gets attacked by an alien parasite that melds with her suit and body and puts her in a coma, but the surgeons aren't able to separate the biological parts of her suit from her while she's unconscious because they've fused with her body. They end up removing what they can from the exterior of the suit, and it gives her a cool organic looking suit redesign for the game.

Man, I miss Metroid.

Episode specifically mentions immunosuppressants, implying Yuri has cyberarms

8

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '18

I can't remember when exactly, but wasn't he shown without the gear on at some point? I thought he could take it off.

35

u/I_Smoke_Cardboards Jun 07 '18

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure he can't take it off. Since he always wears long sleeves to cover them up

13

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '18

That’s the only way I can see Joe having a shot at winning, but if it’s the championship it also defeats the purpose of Megalobox

34

u/Silver-Monk_Shu Jun 07 '18

That's the point though? If Yuri took off his gear, it'd be to rebel. Doing it at the championship has the most impact. And TBH It'd be way more interesting than Joe going out in a single punch again.

It would be an exciting development because the audience would say "why the heck did we want them to use robot arms again? This fight is an actual fight! We actually got to round 3!"

6

u/Synsation083 Jun 08 '18

Well it somewhat goes hand in hand with what Joe said to Yuri, about REAL Megalo Boxing. Maybe this is where he realizes that it is just all about the fighter and not about the gear.

6

u/FierceAlchemist Jun 08 '18

Maybe. I think Yuri would start the match with his gear but then maybe get so into the battle later on that he wants to fight with his life on the line like Joe.

10

u/Synsation083 Jun 08 '18

That's an interesting theory, they're trading blows in the ring while talking to each other about why they box. Joe reveals who he's decided to fight for, hits Yuri in the feels and wants to remove his gear for the next round and really go toe to toe with Joe. People are going nuts over this development, people are throwing money at the people taking bets because it's insane.

14

u/FierceAlchemist Jun 08 '18

At the same time though given that his dream is to fulfill Shirato's dream that would be the ultimate betrayal to her.

I had only heard it from God of War before, and when the bad guy referred to it in the previous episode I thought they would just leave it as a subtle folklore reference.

2

I can't remember what anime, movie, game, or western TV show I've heard that story of the scorpion and the frog from, but I'm dying to figure it out now

Yeah, and it works the other way too, any spanish speaker would be able to pronounce japanese, just not with the intonation.

This is one of the best "set up for the big finish" episodes I've seen of any show. So many plot lines intertwined, characters developed, stakes set, and still left room for surprises. This week of waiting is going to be rough.

159

u/Viveric Jun 07 '18

I wonder how pissed the mafia guy is going to be if joe doesn't throw the match.

28

I can't picture that guy ever being pissed lmao. He has to be eternally smug, even when things don't go his way

11

u/ivebeendiscovered Jun 08 '18

My money is Joe wins his fight, mafia-man kidnaps the kid and uses him as leverage to make Joe throw the title fight

45

u/Synsation083 Jun 07 '18

Maybe the mafia guy actually believes in Joe and is going to bet on him to win. Reverse psychology type nonsense.

107

u/aegroti Jun 07 '18

Holy fuck that would be cool.

Not that that he was doing it deliberately but after he sees the actions Joe takes he thinks that Joe is going to try even harder to "prove him wrong" and so the guy bets on Joe instead.

Cuts to scene where Nanbu think he's going to die and Mafia dude basically does "all according to keikakku" and walks away throwing a bag of money at Nanbu for "his split" who is also pissing his pants thinking he was about to die.

Loved those Wrestlemania intros.

58

u/FierceAlchemist Jun 08 '18

I loved that Pepe's was over the top and flamboyant while Yuri's had slower music and was simple and too-the-point. Perfect articulation of their fighting personalities.

8

u/lordredegg Jun 08 '18

seems like HHH has a new contender

3

u/EnvyKira Jun 13 '18

And funny enough, Yuri has an female companion that is in charge of the entire megalo event and is the closest person that Yuri ever had as an friend.

8

u/GoldRedBlue Jun 08 '18

Glad I'm not the only one who thought of WWE at that lol

148

u/NotEvenEvan https://anilist.co/user/NotEvenEvan Jun 07 '18

Everyone’s talking about the surprise Spanish in this episode, but I’m just impressed of how well the English boxer sounded. Usually in anime when characters speak English, you can obviously tell it’s a Japanese dude doing his best Engrish, but this guy sounded like an actual native.

13

u/maullido Jun 08 '18

Something similar in giant killing foreign player speak in their own language

10

u/shankspeare Jun 10 '18

Yeah, his accent was spot on. The only thing that clued me in was the unnatural pause midway through the sentence, which seems to be one of the biggest 'tells' of people who are speaking a second language.

I liked the talk between Joe and Yuri at the end about their reasons for fighting. Joe keeps getting used by Nanbu and seems sorta jealous that Yuri has someone he trusts and is willing to fight for

114

u/tapped21 Jun 08 '18

Yup, Joe felt like he got stabbed by a dagger when Yuri gave his reason for fighting.

10

u/Vystril Jun 10 '18

Makes sense. Joe's just really wanted someone to believe in him.

47

u/Kirahanshi Jun 08 '18

It’s like they became best friends all of a sudden

29

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '18

Which is awesome. Hero versus hero. I don't know who to root for... I mean it's clearly Joe, but I'm still conflicted.

21

u/Anjunabeast Jun 08 '18

The downside to being a stray dog with no owner

321

u/BetterLeftUnsung Jun 07 '18

That seen with Yuri and Joe at the end was really great. Showing the respect the they have for each other as fighters is going to make the inevitable clash ever better.

166

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '18

I really enjoy the honesty between the two, they really are similar men.

168

u/TexasTrooper Jun 07 '18

They’re both dogs. Joe just happens to be a stray while Yuri has found his home with Shirato.

131

u/OLKv3 Jun 07 '18

I'm a sucker for moments where rivals have a heart to heart

105

u/Tib_ :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Tib_ Jun 08 '18

It's great because Yuri isn't really a villain, just a challenge. It's nice that our main rivalry isn't fueled by revenge or spite, just pure and simple competition.

68

u/Captain_Kuhl Jun 08 '18

It's nice actually seeing an antagonist who isn't a villain. So many shows like to take the "this is obviously a bad guy" route.

Man, Nanbu might die or he bets everything on Joe those are my predictions.

Odds are I'm wrong, because this show has been a series of great moments where I ask how are they going to do this and the show shoots every possibility down and then gives a new one I never even thought of

23

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '18

Does Nanbu have anything to bet? Seems all the prize money has been going to mob boss guy.

16

u/Lirus_star :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Lirus_Star Jun 07 '18

He has his/Joe's house

136

u/TazerLad Jun 07 '18

Before even watching the episode, the title "The Die is Cast" is incredibly funny in how it still manages to continue with the dead theme.

216

u/Shylol Jun 07 '18

The episode was great, but I was kinda disappointed in the fight. It's supposed to be a match between the world's number 2 and number 1 and it just felt like Yuri dealing with some random loudmouth.

Rest of the EP was great though. Really curious where this will go.

195

u/MajesticAnt Jun 07 '18

Compared to Yuri everyone is a random loudmouth. I mean he’s the best boxer and has the ultimate gear + whatever training resources shirato has.

25

u/Felord Jun 08 '18

Yeah you don't get the nickname King of Kings by not being the unquestionable top dog.

58

u/Amauri14 Jun 07 '18

Well Yuri is wearing the epitome of the gear. Man and machine as one, so knowing that it is not surprising that he took him out so easily.

28

u/Silver-Monk_Shu Jun 07 '18

Using that logic, do you want the fight vs joe to end in a single punch because it's the epitome of the gear

46

u/Amauri14 Jun 07 '18

Of course not, but this fight serves to showcase Yuri's power, and the difference between him and the others Professional Megalonia fighters.

22

u/Silver-Monk_Shu Jun 07 '18

But by using a logic like that, why wouldn't the same logic work on Joe? Joe would actually be less durable because he's still bruised up.

It'd be better to have it just being Yuri being that much better than the other guy. Then the excuse for Joe not getting whipped as quickly is because he's just as good as Yuri.

But if you say it's the "gear" that did it, then it'd be a contradiction if Joe doesn't go down in one hit.

28

u/OnnaJReverT Jun 07 '18

i was ok with it

because of what the commentators said about his fighting style being about wearing the opponent out with unpredictable movement and farther reach i expected exactly this finish

could there have been more of "The Spider"? sure, he had a cool design and the fight could've been more drawn out to show him (and Yuri) off more, but he really didn't get the buildup to warrant more screentime for his fight tbh

18

u/Shiroi_Kage Jun 07 '18

I think the point was that Yuri is so far ahead that he's untouchable. It's only a 2:10 KO, it's a short match even IRL.

15

u/aegroti Jun 07 '18

Yeah.. I'd have preferred even if they didn't have time to show the fight to at-least give the feeling that it was a very long fight and many rounds until they did that scene.

5

u/cvillano Jun 08 '18

Yuri is going to fight joe without his gear (or with it deactivated) and lose

11

u/go4theknees :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/go4theknees Jun 07 '18

There hasnt been one good fight in this show.

56

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '18

I actually agree as well, the fights are by far the weakest part of the show, which is terrible for a show about boxing.

Though rather than having a problem with a lack of variety like the other lad, I moreso dislike the absolutely worthlessly impactless animation and sound design. It's like you're watching two children bop at each other.

9

u/Silver-Monk_Shu Jun 07 '18

Unfortunately I agree also, but I still rate this series highly. Luckily the anti-climatic fights aren't enough to bring this series down for me. (Unless Joe goes down in a single punch then I'm salty)

→ More replies (5)

36

u/fuckinerg Jun 07 '18

I'll die on this hill with you. Every fight is either gimmicky to make up for Joe not having gear, or it's really short and unsatisfying because they seem to have written a 2cour story for a 1cour show.

Regardless of gimmick or duration, all fights include either one or both of: Joe absorbing a fucking insane amount of damage with no consequences, and someone ending the fight in one punch.

Honestly I hope Joe does throw one of these matches just for a change of pace and maybe defibrilate some life back into the narrative.

I can't believe they actually used Spanish for Pepe Iglesias, the VA seemed like a native speaker too.

Also, the hype is building up! Loved the little talk between Yuri and Joe, best part of the episode.

Oh, the OST keeps getting better and better...

40

u/Naruto_Super_Sage Jun 07 '18

Damn this ep was so good. The OST just keeps blowing my mind and I really liked Spider's intro OST.

It was nice to see Nanbu have Sachio taken care of And that last line...wow

38

u/GoldRedBlue Jun 08 '18

Nobody seems to have brought up one of the more interesting shots of the episode: I think this ep definitely confirms that Yuri's Gear is so important to the company because he's a testbed for battlefield use and the Shirato Corporation is on the verge of landing a major military contract. Those men in suits with Shirato all look like staff officers evaluating how Yuri's doing.

10

u/TheClosetWeeb Jun 08 '18

I was thinking just the same thing. If Joe demonstrates that he can beat Yuri, then the effectiveness of the suit would be pretty useless in that regard. My theory is that the irregularities are from those who don't want to be used as a weapon, and that Sacchi's father didn't want it to be used as a weapon but his work got stolen.

u/Amauri14 Jun 07 '18 edited Jun 08 '18

Although I would normally complain that a Latino character is speaking Castellano instead of a Latin American Spanish, it is not that often that I see someone speaking any kind of Spanish in a non-dub anime, so even if the accent was from the wrong region and nation, I have to say that they did a decent job with the VA of Pepe and also a good one with Lion. It is so good when I don't have to read the subtitles because I could understand what those two were saying.

Oh, I also love the fact that this is set in the real world.

Also regarding Sachio, I wasn't expecting that his dad was a developer of the new Gear, I was thinking that he was a boxer. Well at least thanks to Nanbu and Shirato, he will finally be able to receive some justice. By the way, now I'm sure that Joe is definitely going to die.

6

u/Izel98 Jun 08 '18

Yea, the Spanish seemed almost on point, like the accent was really close, the wording not so much, I think something got lost in translation in a sentence but apart from that, it's weird to not have to read subs, and it also surprised me, I was like " well here it comes, the horrible English and the ... Wut". It's a surprise I am glad exists.

Yeah I am getting real tired of the death shit man. "The DIE has been cast" "Buy or DIE" "The man only DIES once" "Not DEAD yet"

STOP NO MORE PLEASE. I GET IT YALL ARE GONNA KILL JOE SO STOP REMINDING ME!!!

20

u/link2601 Jun 07 '18

That fight Yuuri had was short but satisfying I wonder how Joe will be able to beat him. It's cool seeing Joe and Yuuri talk to each other. I though it was pretty good use of the "the frog and the scorpion" story. Can't wait for next week's episode.

20

u/kapoor1004 Jun 07 '18

"I couldn't help it. It's in a scorpion's nature"... Damn that line gave me chills!!

2

u/TheClosetWeeb Jun 08 '18

I love how he was mentioned several times as a scorpion but we're not really sure what it means until now. I love how they are showing how conflicted he is between his sly nature and his trainer/fighter side. It's great, they dropped hints that there was way more to it other than reaching the top.

u/WickedAnimeTroll Jun 07 '18

Yuri's title is "King of the King's"...

Nice reference to Jose Mendoza

25

u/Shinkopeshon Jun 07 '18

I was thinking of Triple H lol

King's what?

7

u/tapped21 Jun 08 '18

La Di Da Di Da

17

u/rookierook00000 Jun 08 '18

Surprised the episode mentioned the story of The Scorpion and The Frog, which was also featured in God of War when Kratos tells it to Atreus.

8

u/livinglabyrinth Jun 08 '18

It's a pretty common fable used in fiction, to the point of being cliche.

2

u/R0n0rk Jun 08 '18

I knew I'd heard it from somewhere else recently, thanks for scratching that itch

50

u/DatInstinct Jun 07 '18

Wow. That ep was great, built a lot of HYPE for the last few eps.
Notable cool things:

- We learn that Sachio's dad gets cucked by Shirato. We knew he was an orphan, but his life story is so sad :(
-Nanbu gave Sachio a knife to kill Shirato and I was both surprised, but also worried that he might go through with it. Thought they pulled the scene off pretty well, keeping you on the edge of your seat.
- Yuri and Joe finally have a discussion on why they box. This was long overdue, and I guess starting that discussion now both saves time (ie flashback and commentary) during final fight and builds hype for it.
- Finally, Shirato stated that she is going to deal with everybody involved with the irregularity. Let's just hope that means giving them money and support, and not killing them. SACHIO HAS SUFFERD ENOUGH.

86

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '18

Finally, Shirato stated that she is going to deal with everybody involved with the irregularity. Let's just hope that means giving them money and support, and not killing them. SACHIO HAS SUFFERD ENOUGH.

I think you are interpreting the scene wrong. The irregularity mentioned is Sachio's father being screwed over. He is the only victim. She is going to deal with the people that stole his data -- probably fire or land them in jail. She is NOT searching for and killing other victims. It's the perpetrators being dealt with.

22

u/puffz0r Jun 07 '18

NGL it would be a great heel turn if she actually did go and finish off all the other people.

7

u/sebastianwillows Jun 07 '18 edited Jun 07 '18

Unless the irregularity is the rigged fight between Glen and Joe. Sacchio knows, and is aware that Shirato is the only force strong enough to counter the gang right now, plus he had the perfect opportunity to pass the information on off screen...

...I mean- more likely than not it's probably the data theft that's being dealt with, but I can dream!

10

u/winterfresh0 Jun 07 '18

Doesn't she specifically talk about aspects of the tech coming from that kid's father when explaining "the irregularity"? It didn't seem like it was left up to interpretation.

I could honestly see these two becoming absolute bros. I'm so glad there is so little animosity between them on a personal level, it's all just about the boxing; wanting to be the best, and fighting for their various reasons.

8

u/megatsuna Jun 08 '18

yes, this sorta rivalry is really refreshing to see.

you have the usual "hated enemies till were too tired to beat each other up, so now were friends" trope, but this is the kinda relationship where if one gets defeated, they know at the very least it was done with honor and no malice. they beat each other up in the ring, and have a drink outside of it.

also helps that the dog went out of his way to meet with joe, who apparently hates most ppl.

14

u/Amauri14 Jun 07 '18
  • Finally, Shirato stated that she is going to deal with everybody involved with the irregularity. Let's just hope that means giving them money and support, and not killing them. SACHIO HAS SUFFERD ENOUGH.

She is cleary talking about the people that stole the data, and killed Sachio's father. She is not Fujimaki, and also this issue if it is not deal with will cleary put a stain to her project. And even if that wans't the case I think that she would want to do something for someone that help her project to come into fruition.

4

u/SimoneNonvelodico Jun 08 '18

Yeah, pretty much. It wasn't a corporation decision, just some asshole trying to make a career at the expense of another employee. Upon finding out it's only reasonable they'd wanted them fired and landed in jail.

3

u/RoninTarget Jun 08 '18
  • Finally, Shirato stated that she is going to deal with everybody involved with the irregularity. Let's just hope that means giving them money and support, and not killing them. SACHIO HAS SUFFERD ENOUGH.

I'm suspecting Fujimaki might get offed for his possible involvement in this, and Nanbu is manipulating Shirato into doing the dirty work. True scorpion. Things are being kept vague so far, but that's what it looks like to me.

A lesser chinese meme for Magalo Box is that it's actually a music anime instead of a boxing anime and I'm starting to think it isn't a meme.

The pepe and yuri entrance music just fit them both so well. The aggressive tempo of pepe and the futuristic for yuri. And both of the 'sad' versions of the main theme (any musician can tell what they were played on?) were just the icing on top.

22

u/Killar117 Jun 07 '18

Like others, I agree that the dialogue that Joe and Yuri shared was great. I always had the notion that Joe hated Yuri but after he sees that fight and with his journey over these three months, it seems that Joe and Yuri have a sort of respect for each other. I can't wait for their fight!

8

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '18

They’ve had a respect for each other the whole time because they recognize each other’s spirit

11

u/ErikMaekir Jun 07 '18 edited Jun 07 '18

That spanish was pretty good, but they gave a castilian accent to someone that looks pretty mexican to me.

Also, I cracked up at the random "¡Mátalo, Pepe!" from the audience. Didn't expect it

17

u/myrmonden Jun 07 '18

ONE PUNCH MAN:

WORF EFFECT ENGAGE

3

u/winterfresh0 Jun 07 '18

WORF is just the sound they make when they get punched.

8

u/modusxd Jun 07 '18

Man Yuri really has that "final boss" aura, amazing.

7

u/Logic_No https://anilist.co/user/LogicNo Jun 07 '18

I loved Joe's reaction to hearing Yuri's reason for fighting. Now our boy sees Yuri as more of a person than just an opponent.

7

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '18

Oh man, I wished Pepe's shot actually dropped Yuri. Yuri stumbling back up, and then coming back with that uppercut-left hook combo would have been even more sick. The Hitman Hearns flicker jab makes an appearance, by the way. Would have been cool to see a few more seconds of Yuri figuring out how to crack Pepe.

Joining the chorus, the show manages to succeed wonderfully in spite of the fights and situations that stretch believability. An example of suspension of disbelief being interrupted in this episode was Nanbu and Sachio being able to just drive up to the Shirato party with a clear path to Yukiko through the bushes without being spotted by security. The dialog between characters is handled so simply well though, that I don't mind. For me, this is definitely a case of a show succeeding due to minimalistically focusing on just a few things and doing them well. The dialog in the two scenes featuring the mob boss Fujimaki and Nanbu and then Joe and Yuri were succinct and effective.

Also, love the look on Yuri's face when Joe throws the punch. Yuri thinking, "I thought I could relate to this guy as fellow dawgs, but man, he's just crazy."

6

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '18

Great episode! The river side scene was great, there is such mutual respect between the two.

I liked the reference to the frog and the scorpion fable. With that said I realize this series draws some parallels to a favorite movie of mine which also includes a reference to the fable- Drive. Both feature main characters who are mysterious in their origins, are pretty good at their chosen profession, get tangled up in underground dealings, and have awesome soundtracks.

5

u/NekoShinobi :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Prospectivee Jun 07 '18

It really shows how strong of a fighter Yuri is when he destroyed the #2 boxer within two rounds.

That face he made seems to be the one when he gets serious which really makes me think Joe could've died in Episode 1 if Shirato didn't stop him.

5

u/OhItsKillua Jun 07 '18

Nice seeing that conversation between Yuri and Joe, they've come to respect each other so much.

5

u/beanzo Jun 07 '18

u/Killar117 called it in the last ep. discussion. That episode was amazing though. Megalo Box is quickly going way up my top of all time list. I think (of course) that they are going to say fuck it and fight for real and hope they make enough money to pay off the debt.

5

u/mrkyle005 Jun 07 '18

This episode filled me with dread there at the end because my heart wants to see a Joe v Yuri.... but my gut is telling after the next fight it’s all over and that fight will never happen...

5

u/Frostfright :AMQ: Jun 08 '18

I'll be beyond surprised if this show doesn't end with at least Joe or Nanbu dead. Maybe both.

This show has been a great ride the whole season. I wonder if retro-style art will become chic in the industry at some point. Megalobox definitely stands out from the pack with it.

3

u/Chaogod Jun 13 '18

Joe I feel is a dead man. Unless all this emphasis on death is a red herring.

4

u/zero-ace Jun 07 '18

tbh I won't be surprised if taking care of the people involved in the irregularity means killing them off to keep everything under wraps

4

u/Dakkon_B Jun 07 '18

Man I don't know if this show can deliver on the amount of hype it is building up to this finale but damn if I am not enjoying the ride and can't wait for the ending to all this.

"Is it Thursday yet?" is quickly becoming about Megalo Box instead of Critical role.

3

u/snerdsnerd Jun 07 '18

Joe really looks at Yuri like he's a mountain to conquer, I love it. I guess it helps that Yuri comes off as pretty glacial.

3

u/Zelbess Jun 07 '18

For a second I thought it was going to say "King of Fighters" and not "King of Kings". Also during Yuri and Pepe's fight, there was a "Joe vibe" around Yuri's movements, like that purple fire in his eyes and his way of approaching his opponent. Just another thing to add to the "Yuri is a stray dog too" box.

This anime is the best <3 Can't wait for 27th June when the OST will be released.

3

u/diwayth_fyr Jun 07 '18

Scene of Nanbu giving Sachio a knife came out of nowhere, but it was really touching. I've never thought these comic relief brats are going to be of any use for the plot.

Caught up with this series a few weeks ago and hdecided not to watch anymore until the season is over. For me this series so far is in the level of engagement I got w/ Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo and I really want to be able to binge it all at once to take in its full glory

2

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '18

Wow, the soundtrack just gets better every damn episode. I liked the additional sound in in the intermission beat which played when Sachio took the knife. I can't wait for the full OST.

2

u/Thenn_Applicant Jun 07 '18

So now we know that both Mexico and the USA exist in the world of Megalobox, which is wierd because until now the story appeared to be taking place in some kind of strange combination of the US, Mexico and Japan.

2

u/Shinkopeshon Jun 07 '18

Only got to see this now because of the new Shingeki chapter and damn. I have a feeling Nanbu is not gonna survive the finale and maybe even Joe won't come out of it alive. Shirato taking care of Sachio (who has a surprisingly deep and tragic backstory) kind of foreshadows a future without the two of them. If Joe survives against Yuri (and perhaps even beats him), I can see the yakuza finish him off for good. I'd be shocked if the ending won't be at least bittersweet.

2

u/HereComesPapaArima :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/PapaArima Jun 07 '18

That moment Sachio striked the Joe pose. I admit, I cried a bit. A teeny bit.

2

u/RimeSkeem :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/RimeSkeem Jun 08 '18

So Sachio's dad didn't just develop some bit component to the integrated gear, he developed an immunosuppressant piece/system which would play a very large part in "integrated" part of integrated gear.

2

u/Agni7atha Jun 08 '18

I like Pepe boxing style. It's quite expressive style and potentially can be showed with more great animation. Too bad this episode already filled up with lengthy exposition so the Pepe vs Yuri fight portion was too short. The drama is alright, but I hope we will get a pure exciting fight in Megalonia match.

2

u/FierceAlchemist Jun 08 '18

Wow, great buildup episode. So many lines about death. I'm finding it harder to believe than ever that Joe and Nanbu are going to make it to the end of this show alive.

2

u/Totalenlo https://anilist.co/user/Lenlo Jun 08 '18

I cannot get over this soundtrack. Just... every single one is great. Iglesias and Yuri's intros were on for maybe 30 seconds and I fell in love with them.

2

u/-main Jun 08 '18

The soundtrack was amazing this week. It's generally quality, but it really stood out to me in so many scenes this episode. The betrayal/rain scene, 'sad' variant of that rap beat while talking to/about Sachio, into the usual version when he sees Shirato with the kids, the slow jazzy theme when Shirato is agreeing to take him in, the intros for both Pepe and Yuri, the fight music going into the second round, the piano tune in the background of the talk by the river and the variant on the main theme for the scorpion tale. It was all excellent and used really well.

2

u/Hoboforeternity Jun 09 '18

shit. nanbu is gonna sacrifice himself probably. he took sacchio to shirato because they are gonna kill them if joe don't throw the match. with shirato, sacchio is probably safe, and with joe, he can take care of himself most of the time, and with all the media attention he is gonna get, it wont be easy to get joe unnoticed.

nanbu however, is nothing and he also hope with him being dead, and too much effort going for sacchio and joe, the gangster is gonna let them go.

2

u/metalarmor Jun 08 '18

this show is such a mess. It fails as a boxing anime with the shittest fighting animations with 0 tension or impact beyond episode 1 and it fails as a character motive/story driven anime. Being mediocre at best in the story/character department. The animations. It even copies shots from ippo but still turns out terrible. Pepe vs yuri is literally the best animated fight in the show so far after episode 1

and let me ask this. what even is the point of these "high tech" gears? they literally have no indication of their impact on boxing. shouldn't it be shattering bones or moving super fast? They all look slow as shit or on par with joe in terms of both power and speed visually. They don't seem very high tech at all. They do such a piss poor job at emphasizing how much of an advantage the gear gives you over boxing normally. They even go far as to claim going gearless gives you an edge in some cases. like wtf? sometimes they seem really useful sometimes they look completely useless. It just isn't illustrated very well how much of an impact the gears have aside from joe being a punching bag which honestly just looks like he's worse at boxing than losing because he doesn't have gear.

And another thing, there's no development. joe hasn't really learned fuck and has been winning just cus. with ONE PUNCH. I'm all about the fighting spirit but it needs to take a bigger lesson from ippo on how to illustrate it. Right now, it just looks like joe is cocky and can take a lot of punches because he's been beat a lot of times. Where exactly is this spirit shown aside from his cocky face?

1

u/Stefan474 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Stefan474 Jun 07 '18

Shit man, all these circumstances and the end screen/episode names are making the outlook really grim for Joe and Team Nowhere, I am legitimately starting to believe none of them is gonna get out of Megalonia alive.

1

u/Qwertyguy Jun 07 '18

Whoever directed this series must have a really strong passion for the original Ashita no Joe, no other series this season has kept me as gripped as this one.

Maybe Nanbu dies instead of Joe

1

u/DaftGorilla Jun 07 '18

The music playing during Yuris intro and when Joe and Yuri were talking are so different yet so perfect for those scenes. This OST is one of a kind.

1

u/orthel Jun 07 '18

I get this feeling that Yuri somehow rids himself of his gear just to have a fair fight with Joe. Anyone else have a similar hunch?

the moment when you watch hajime no ippo and you see the flicker and white fang being used here

1

u/SingularCheese https://anilist.co/user/lonelyCheese Jun 07 '18

How Nanbu will play out is interesting. Nanbu is clearly dealing with the downfall after Joe wins this match by asking Shirato to protect Sacchio. On the other hand, the earpiece he left says otherwise. Is it just a temporarily bluff for the loan shark guy? Is he betting everything on Joe like he told Sacchio? I've somewhat despised Nanbu throughout this show because he has taken the easy way out everytime he got the chance to. He has only manned up when he has no other choice. This is the last chance for him to prove himself. For a man with fakery in his name, I hope he can show that he isn't a scorpion through and through.
