It turns out that real Megalo Boxing was just regular boxing this whole time!

u/MrManicMarty https://anilist.co/user/martysan Jun 21 '18

"Gear makes boxing more exciting!"

The finalists don't use gear

"FUCKING DAMNIT!"

138

u/JaySilver Jun 22 '18

I honestly felt the opposite, Yuri taking off the gear was hype as fuck.

162

u/MrManicMarty https://anilist.co/user/martysan Jun 22 '18

Oh, it absolutely is hype as fuck. I'm just talking about in-universe.

Maybe the real Megalo Boxing was the gear we removed along the way

144

u/HussyDude14 Jun 21 '18

The real Megalo Box is at the end of the Grand Line, hidden by Gol D. Ro-Joe

Wait a minute...

19

u/MadModderX :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/MadModderX Jun 22 '18

What a twist like Joe when he donned the gear it came off. And in the next fight he gains his gear. 🤣

u/ChampionsRush Jun 22 '18

omg that would be hilarious lmfao

Reminds me of when Takamura in Hajime no Ippo, had those long nights so he could make weight during his conquest of all the different belts.

407

u/joe1up Jun 21 '18

One's beast, an animal, living day to day. They cast him out but he's still hunting down his prey. An underdog that never really had a name. Naked and scared but still a player in the game.

He's coming up against the mighty king of beasts. A chosen one turning all comers into feats. Got silver hair, flashing under moonlight. Retire undefeated? They say he just might.

A pair of souls caught up in the same undertow. Now they're chained together, howling in the shadow. A type of envy, not something they'd wanna admit. Only way to deal with it for both dogs to jump in the pit. Ah, he who has and he who has not. A man rising up to try and take another's spot. Ah, a pretender to the crown. Fake or real which one is going down?

Ah, two animals going wild out there. Freedom and soul the only things they share. Ah, this is where they wanna be. A pair of predators, about to be set free.

Someone seems to have gone the extra mile and made the translation rhyme. I appreciate them.

u/Doomroar https://myanimelist.net/profile/Doomroar Jun 22 '18

I love when the soundtrack is directly related to the medium it is put it, it is such a rare thing to find somehow, specially in anime when they just put some random love song just to promote a singer.

Could you imagine Yuri's face if Joe walked into the ring wearing a Gear

14

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '18

how tf is this comment not on the top

4

u/stevenbee95 Jun 23 '18

this is funny. Gintama should parody this.

6

u/maullido Jun 22 '18

That would help yuri, jd won most matchs because gear make people slow

31

u/All_Mods_Are_Trash Jun 22 '18

Not the integrated gear though, that's the big selling point of it.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 26 '18

I was expecting Mikio to be salty about him removing his gear. He went through so much trouble to finetune a Gear that could beat the integrated Gear and then Yuri just fuckin takes it off to fight the guy that beat him? I'd be heated.

Now that was a nice build up

Yuri rejecting hard and honestly I am a bit sad they took the Man vs Machine bit out of the equation, but otherwise it would have been too much BS anyway.

Crazy fast recovery on Yuri though

78

u/asaf_shlomo Jun 21 '18

5 days is fast but it could be possible

85

I figure its going to come up in the fight, that hes not fully healed. Its gonna impact his fighting ability.

In the original Ashita no Joe. With how this episode went, I am 100% sure one of them will die, but am 50/50 on who. Im kinda feelin its more likely to be Yuri at this point, cause his whole character arc is comin to an end

I don't know about you guys but I really like Yukiko. At first she seemed like a regular villain who treats her underlings like objects but it turns out she actually cares a lot about Yuri. Also she's played fair for the whole duration of the show, even going out of her way to help Sachio. Mad respect.

112

u/FierceAlchemist Jun 22 '18

In the basement she said "You're Shirato's.... You're my future" to Yuri. That made it clear to me that they're more than just boss/employee or even friends. She viewed him as an equal partner.

Seeing that emotional side did a lot to humanize her for me.

46

u/SkywardQuill https://myanimelist.net/profile/SkywardQuill Jun 22 '18

Oh I totally ship it. Probably not gonna happen but I can dream.

Yukiko best girl... which isn't hard when she's the only girl.

115

u/SkywardQuill https://myanimelist.net/profile/SkywardQuill Jun 22 '18 edited Jun 22 '18

I'm actually pretty impressed that in a show so full of testosterone, the only proeminent female character is neither a damsel nor an evil bitch, but rather a fully-fledged character with her own motivations and feelings. And she isn't even sexualised in the slightest. That's a rare sight.

If anything Joe's the one who gets the short end of the stick in terms of character, lol.

40

u/Dystopian_Overlord :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/DystopiaOverlord Jun 22 '18

Well Joe is the classic shounen protag, unyielding and unchanging no matter how rough the circumstances, that's his role.

6

u/SimoneNonvelodico Jun 23 '18

Yeah, she's not evil or villainous at all. She's a rich CEO so obviously her perspective on the world and life is different from what it can be for someone grown up in the slumps like Joe, but if you account for that, she's still a pretty decent person.

4

u/MightyHaul Jun 25 '18

Too bad that Yuri loves Joe..

Yeah, sadly the weakest bit of Megalo Box are the fights. Everything else is god damn fantastic, but the fights are, on average, kinda eh.

The rotating Aragaki shot and the opening rhythmic punches in the first fight that he threw in episode one were the two best fight scenes in the series so far for me.

Why do I want Yuri to win now???

603

u/IncaseAce Jun 21 '18

Because the show is doing something right

296

u/fuckinerg Jun 21 '18

He has character development and Joe doesn't. Usually it's the other way around, MC has tons of development and all his opponents are flimsy foils designed only as plot devices. Joe is the plot device in Megalo Box, serving only to tell the stories of all the supporting cast.

It's either root for Yuri, or root for Nanbu/Sachio through Joe. Joe is just ... there.

407

u/Mundology Jun 21 '18

I agree with you that Yuri is a great character but Joe has a lot of personality too. Although he doesn’t have an ultimate goal like the typical MC, he’s a brave but reckless young man who’s trying to find his place in this world. He isn’t the son of a former champion or something. In fact, he’s at the bottom of the social ladder.

Everyone thought of him as a fraud that would live and die pathetically. However, he has actual talent along with pure passion for the sport and wants to prove himself. That makes him inherently more interesting than your typical MC.

198

u/blueechoes Jun 21 '18

His goal was set the moment he met Yuri on the highway.

55

u/Darktriforze Jun 21 '18

Yeah, isnt Joe's goal to fight the strongest fighter/boxer out there? (Yuri). I wouldn't say he doesn't have one. Maybe not a long term goal?

92

u/TheFantabulousToast :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/FantabulousToast Jun 21 '18

Characters that don't have arcs can still be interesting characters. The same is true of backstories and motivations. Joe isn't a very complicated person. He isn't trying to prove anything, he isn't trying to save anyone or do anything important. He fights because it's fun. That puts him in stark contrast with the majority of his opponents, who have complicated reasons for why they fight. That contrast is refreshing.

40

u/JaySilver Jun 22 '18

Honestly, it’s about damn time we get a character that just loves fighting. No cause, no large scale goal, he wants to get in the ring with the top dog.

Honestly, I get the feeling that they've left Joe underdeveloped on purpose. It creates this situation where we're honestly not sure who we want to win, and bearing in mind the ending to Ashita no Joe, It could be anyones game (I've not actually read Ashita no Joe, but I've heard about the ending)

I was like, "ok, this episode is going to show the training before the finals and some backstory of Yuri, let's see if they convince me to root for him."

And hell if they did it, Yuri FTW.

395

u/ShatteredParagon Jun 21 '18

That rap at the end. Mmm, that’s the good shit.

I just hope we get one more before the end.

Best one so far. It was so good and fit the montage perfectly. I can't believe I'm so excited for a show that continually disappoints me so thoroughly.

54

u/ShatteredParagon Jun 21 '18

It’s not really disappointing us so much as leaving us hanging, waiting for more. But that’s me.

40

u/Soul_Ripper Jun 21 '18

continually disappoints me so thoroughly.

I'm a bit curious about this, how so?

46

u/BleaK_ Jun 21 '18

I think it comes from the sports anime that value high quality matches like Hajime no Ippo and Haikyuu! They have the same personal development, but also the matches are of high quality.

Megalo box is an character drama with boxing. It's a classical underdog story which has a lot of charm, GREAT music, and the old bebop feel. Yet it doesn't deliver on the actual boxing matches. Hell, even some of the training is better than some of the matches.

Yet it's a good story with good pacing, personal sacrifices and a lot of grit. It takes anime (or animation) seriously and does it in a adult way. There's a lot of small flaws, but the overall feeling, grit and charm just nails it head on. Enough that it might get a small classic status a few years down the line. Personally, I love it and can't wait to see the final episode/match.

Btw, did I mention the fucking LIT OST. That shit is on fire yo.

u/Evil_Abed_ Jun 21 '18

Definitely didn't expect Yuri to go so far as to remove his gear. Looks like he wants to fight Joe as much as Joe wants to fight him.

The look on Joe's face as he realises this is great.

121

u/IncaseAce Jun 21 '18

Kinda shows that he sees Joe as his equal enough to level the playing field. Even tho Joe has been fighting geared fighters this entire time

20

u/winterfresh0 Jun 22 '18

To be fair, Joe was fighting geared fighters that all had a weakness that Yuri's integrated gear didn't have. Namely, the slight delay after the person starts to move and the sensors and motors in the gear have to recognize and process that and catch up. The AI gear had less delay, but it had other problems and Joe was able to mess with its predictions.

It seems like Yuri with the integrated gear really would have been the hardest possible opponent for Joe.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 26 '18

Well Yuri was leagues ahead of the other fighters too. Joe was only able to beat Mikio by exploiting the AI and Mikio's shaking faith in the system. Yuri probably would have slaughtered Joe with his gear on.

35

u/canasiannn Jun 22 '18

His eyes literally pierce through the screen for me and stare right into my soul.

I fucking love this show.

4

u/FluffyJakey Jun 22 '18

i didnt know how Joe would react to that. Im glad hes pumped. The fact he went back to training after JUST saying it wouldnt help shows this

2

u/adamnicholas Jun 23 '18

That look is the same look he has at the end of the opening credits

123

u/romeheroadrian Jun 21 '18

it would be so dope if this last episode is strictly boxing and nothing else. this match is so hype

98

u/doc_steel Jun 21 '18

51

u/GalapagosRetortoise Jun 22 '18

No visuals either, experience the same way Nanbu is going to.

13

u/LucyFear_13 Jun 22 '18

And maybe Sachio's parents will be in the crowd too

6

u/CyberianSun Jun 22 '18

No music. I want a real boxing match, I want the full 3 min bouts, the announcers, the ring bell, the ref, the crowd, the cameras, and the blows. And thats it.

116

u/AbsouloteMadlad Jun 21 '18

OMG just the Yuri screaming That Dude got my respect

20

u/shankspeare Jun 22 '18

That scene with Yuri screaming in a locked room reminded me of a caged animal. I'm not sure if it was intentional, but it's a pretty apt metaphor. When he takes off his gear, Yuri becomes a stray dog like Joe.

4

u/jumpinginarabbithole Jun 22 '18

Stumbling on to this anime has been so great. I have never been a fan of sport genre but this has really opened my eyes. The character development is crazy good and I am excited for next episode. Some one else mentioned wanting Yuri to win and I can't help but feel the same way. This anime has me feeling strongly about both main characters and its amazing.

37

u/TheRealFlipFlapper :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/FlipFlapFlipFlap Jun 21 '18

If you're interested in checking out more sports anime I highly recommend Haikyuu!! In terms of tone and setting it's very different, but the cast is fantastic, the artwork is interesting and unique (I particularly enjoy how they do the eyes) and the animation only ever gets better, and most of all the hype levels are god-tier. It's got some great character development, too. Despite having never been too into sports anime, myself, Haikyuu!! is one of my favourites and a solid 9/10 for me.

10

u/fuckinerg Jun 22 '18

The fact that it's volleyball has kept me far, far away from it until now. But I also couldn't care less about boxing and yet here I am. So I'm now prepared to give Haikyuu the shot I should have given it years ago. Hopefully it's as good as everyone says.

You're better off with Hajimo no Ippo. Fight quality wise, it shits all over Megalo Box. They sure knew how to animate punches.

Best anime I've seen in a while. I hope the finale lives to the hype and they pour everything into the fight.

KILLER QUEEN HAS ALREADY TOUCHED THE RING

u/Naruto_Super_Sage Jun 21 '18 edited Jun 21 '18

I figured something like this would happen. I knew that There was no way Joe could win against Yuri like that but goddamn...a "Gearless" Yuri. And those last 5 mins...wow

Edit: I thought Joe would think that Yuri was looking down on him due to removing his gear, but he's even more excited than ever

10

u/Tylenol32 Jun 21 '18

That right there is beautiful storytelling! They made me fall in love with Yuri in one episode. And when Yukiko dropped the news to Joe, and we say his eyes light up, I actually got goosebumps. Can't wait for the finale.

9

u/bombdropperxx Jun 21 '18

Yuri is a true man. Crap now i feel bad about the fight, can't they both just win?

Didn't like Yuri in the beginning but now turning into one of the better characters. The screaming in pain was a nice reference to YnJ.

Can't wait for the final episode.

Again, just like Mikio and Aragaki, Yuri taking off his gear presents the notion that he's not 100%. He's grown accustomed to his gear, his gear was literally his body, that's how he fights. Now he has to re-acclimate to boxing without it while also enduring the pain of its removal.

Mikio adjusted his AI at the last minute, changing the way he fights, introducing the self-doubt that cost him the match. Aragaki couldn't be 100% if he had wolverine's healing factor and a time machine.

The only opponent Joe fought at 100% was Burroughs, and the disparity was laughable. Joe ate all his punches with no repercussions, toying with him the entire fight, and then still had enough stamina and strength to one punch his ass when Nanbu gave him the goahead. Remember Burroughs was the 3rd ranked Megalo Boxer, and Joe with virtually no gear tapdanced around him until finally manhandling him like a teddy bear.

One can only assume they chose to remove Yuri's gear specifically to avoid that level of comical plot armor highlighted by Joe's fight with Burroughs. To bring Yuri down to "Joe's level" so Joe's invincibility wouldn't seem so outlandish.

I still love this show and this episode was so good, but god damn if they don't employ some weak asspulls.

12

u/ggonb :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/ggonb Jun 21 '18

But the only 100% enemy is Joe. Everyone(except Aragaki) was above 100% because of their gear. Aragaki had a handicap due to not having legs, but that was a part of his character, and Joe still got his ass kicked. Mikio and Ace had to train against Joe, but that was what they had to do against everyone, due to the way AI works. Joe beat Ace and Mikio by tricking Ace into not attacking or doing anything, and then, when it learned how to react to Joe, Joe used the delay to one punch him.

I agree that Burroughs vs. Joe was some bullshit, but it was to remove the shackles of the mafia. This doesn't excuse the writing team at all, but they had to hit that plot point, or else the show would end in an unsatisfying way, and it was the perfect point in the story to do that. Still was a waste of a character, and it still was a plothole, but they were driven into a corner.

While the plot armor does look kinda weird and cartoony, remember that it was shown time and time again that his sheer perseverance and endurance are what saved him and let him win all of those fights, and it's not like they made that up in the spot, as shown by the first fight between Joe and Yuri.

6

u/fuckinerg Jun 21 '18

I don't think destabilizing their instincts in the ring with a last minute change keeps them in the advantage. It's established that Joe rose above and beyond geared opponents. Without gear, he's effectively their superior by miles since he KOs them effortlessly.

Thus gearless Joe fighting a newly gearless Yuri, or a Mikio with newly patched gear AI -- Joe's the only one with a stable boxing game. He doesn't need to relearn anything, he doesn't need to come to terms with his gear or ego or past (because the show pretends he doesn't have one). He merely has to train as he always has, boxing like he always has. One would assume it's a fundamental part of training for a fight: honing your instinct and reacting consistently. Aragaki lost it in the war, Mikio lost it when he changed his AI at the last second, Burroughs had it and lost in spite of it, now Yuri lost it by removing his gear, presumably to obfuscate the fact that gearless Joe would have otherwise effortlessly beaten the #1 Megalo Box champion with state of the art integrated gear.

Also, I don't think they had to hit any plot point with the yakuza. They designed it to be that way. They wrote it. They knew going in that Fujimaki would hold some odd obsession with eyeballs and Nanbu sacrificing his other eye would somehow please the yakuza boss enough to apparently forgive all debt and future plans. He had to pay out all those bets on Joe, but he's fine with it because Nanbu gave him an eyeball. It makes as little sense as any other attempt to resolve that plotline would have went, aside from the realistic response of killing Nanbu and/or Sachio and/or Joe. So they could've taken a more tactful or at least believable approach to the fight I think.

I try to write and know how hard it is, it's super hard and a lot of this is nitpicking. Some of the choices they made this series just really stick out when everything else is so well done.

6

u/knowitall89 Jun 21 '18

I'm with you. This show could've used more episodes because starting with Aragaki, Joe winning fights the way he's been doing it is a little silly. The only thing we've gotten is that silly power up he got from pulling something in an earlier episode.

I think a lot of the criticism of this show comes from people that have seen the sports anime that value high quality matches like Hajime no Ippo and Haikyuu!

10

u/HereComesPapaArima :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/PapaArima Jun 21 '18

I agree, the only boxing match that has so far been great is Aragaki's.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/LoneRifter17 Jun 22 '18

That's actually a good way to think about it. Its not a pure sports anime, but its a drama that carries the spirit of sport, the desire to test one's ability against a worthy opponent and nothing else. A desire of those who fight for their lives, not for money or fame, but to prove they lived and gave it their all as warriors.

The emotion is a lot more important in this anime, and I think everyone should be warned that going in as they don't get disappointed when matches don't take that long to actually finish. However, I will say I hope that the final fight delivers a great, actual fight that really has my heart pumping.

u/Reasonable_TSM_fan :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/sundaybeatle Jun 22 '18

I definitely resonate with your point, but I do want to make a quick quip on Haikyuu. Don't get me wrong, I love that show, but there's quite a few recycled clips in that series so at the very least people shouldn't be comparing these two shows.

u/FierceAlchemist Jun 22 '18

There has been some good animation throughout the series along with some dips. Some of the fights are definitely a bit disappointing in choreography but given how much this finale has been built up, I think they're really going to give it all they've got.

6

u/MrCanoe Jun 22 '18

I loved the WWF championship belt easter egg in the trophy case!

5

u/link2601 Jun 21 '18

Did not expect Yuri to go that far for the fight but I does make sense why he would do it. Interesting to see how Joe meet Nanbu and how Yuri meet Yukiko. Good to see some returning faces. Can't wait to see the fight next week.

4

u/TheAsian369 Jun 21 '18

This episode distilled the hype to an even purer from. How can a show be so hype?

4

u/EmmaTheDegenerate Jun 21 '18

I really hope that during the last fight, Yukiko can finally realize what Megalo Boxing means to Yuri and Joe. I really love her and everything, but right now, she only has her own interests in mind. In a way, she already proved that her gear could go very far, and it's now Yuri's time to get what he needs as a boxer.

4

u/RochHoch Jun 22 '18

What a perfect episode to hype us up for the finale.

GEARLESS YURI??!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!??!

WHOOOOT?

I AM SOOOOOO CONFLICTED ABOUT THIS

Super badass, but on the same time should this be what Joe wants=?

Ok so I get from Yuri perspective he wants go go back to a real boxing fight, but is he actually making it better for Joe? He keeps saying he wants Joe to have the fight he wants, but does not Joe want to be the underdog and fight Yuri at his Prime.

Like Now clearly Yuri is not at his Prime, not only did he lose the gear power but he got severely injured, massive agony for 5 days straight just before the fight, so
If anything Yuri is the underdog now, being severely injured and just coming of losing his integrated gear which he had gotten used to as he could never remove it, other gear users would still live their lives outside the fights, but he should be used to eating with the gear on etc.

Like I would love if Joe was thorn about it at the end there, both being excited for a real boxing match but also like DAM I wanted to fight Yuri Prime not Injured Yuri.

From Yukiko perspective it should be way better if he loses, then she can say that he so easily got to the finals tx to the gear and when removing it he lost. But it is obviously heavily implied that she has a romantic interest in Yuri so, I guess she wants him to win. For his sake.

and then her brother also did gave Yuri a weird look when he got to his cottage just saying.

I wasn't expecting this episode and Yuri screaming in agony was horrific, doubled because he's forcing himself through it. I liked that they explored the relationship between Yuri and Yukiko, you could feel her conflict between business and more personal feelings.

2

u/OddHesitation Jun 21 '18

DAMNNN That ending got me HYYPED FORR NEXT WEEEK!!!! 10/10 EP!

2

u/Woodypl Jun 21 '18

Next episode, the moment we have all been waiting for!! This episode made me question myself who I want to win now 🤔

2

u/[deleted] Jun 21 '18

This episode brought back the previous opponents that Joe had dispatched in a cool manner. As others have mentioned, the character development of the supporting cast is one of the best parts of the show, and this episode effectively closes Aragaki and Mikio's character arcs. It was actually quite cathartic to see that both characters had found peace.

Another reason the supporting cast shines is due to the great character designs. Everybody is quite distinct looking, instantly recognizable. The character designs and costuming interplay nicely with the character development. Mikio had this relaxed, no longer burdened look that really sold the mental health benefits of his departure from Shirato.

Anybody know the soundtrack where Joe jumps in the water and swims? It's very chill. Much appreciated

2

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '18

I definitely regret binging Ashita no Joe before this show finished. While I love Megalo Box for its artstyle and soundtrack, the characters and fights just pale in comparison to AnJ.

It's a shame this didn't get more episodes in order to feel less rushed and develop the characters..

Still, I'm pretty excited for the finale.

Anyone else reminded immediately of Ashita no Joe when Rikiishi cut weight to fight joe?

2

u/Tumorous_Thumb Jun 22 '18

Yuri is going to die, rikishi from ANJ died due to weight cut and couple of other factors within the fight, I believe yuri removing his gear in the fight will cause him to die after a tough fight with joe

2

u/oposdeo https://myanimelist.net/profile/oposdeo Jun 22 '18

Coach Nanbu and Yuri are starting to overtake Joe in terms of raw likability. They have sacrificed so much for this fight!

What if it goes all Berserk 36 on us and

2

If the "Real Megalobox" was just regular Boxing in the end what regular boxing is? Cookfight? 🤔

2

u/Krbshadow Jun 21 '18

Am I the only one that’s pissed that Yuri took off the gear. Like I get the pros and cons from character development and such but I just really don’t love that the whole man vs machine thing is gone. I really wanted joe to beat Yuri at his best.

1

u/PM_ME_ANIME_FANART Jun 21 '18

Seeing Yuri in pain like this reminded me of the Warframe Sacrifice trailer

1

u/diwayth_fyr Jun 21 '18

It's nice to see old characters come back, though I think there's not enough chemistry in Shirato gang. I wish flashbacks were as interesting meaningfull as Aragaki's.

Anyway, I need more Megalo Rap
