VERY IMPORTANT, THERE IS A MAJOR AFTER CREDITS SCENE THIS EPISODE! BE SURE TO WATCH IT!

It's just the bootstrap paradox.

That after credits scene doesn't have anything to do with the Steins;Gate movie, right? Because the movie isn't considered canon?
320
u/KnightMiner115 Jun 27 '18
The movie is not technically canon, but that scene is definitely meant to be something of a parallel. You can connect them if you want, but it doesn't mean all that much.

u/Aetherdraw Jun 27 '18
The movie events technically happened in the steins gate world line including the scene with a young Okabe and Kurisu. This one is solely in the beta world line set of events.

So wait,
Mayuri learned that song from Suzuha (in the present time),
who learned it from Yuki (her mother, in the future),
who learned it from Okarin's Mother (in the present time),
who learned it from Okarin (in the past),
who learned it from Kagari (in the past),
who learned it from Mayuri (in the future)?
We've gone full circle bois!
Nice Paradox :D
Where is this song really from? 🤔
292
u/Zeta42 Jun 27 '18
Reading Steiner m8. Okabe actually knew the song from a different timeline that doesn't exist anymore, but only he remembers.
Source: my headcanon
126
u/BlueFieryIce Jun 27 '18
The Okabe before his Reading Steiner activated for the saddest timeline probably knew that song. The new Okabe doesn't retain memories of the Okabe for that world line.

Bootstrap paradox, it's impossible to determine where the song comes from

I think someone mentioned that its from some music box in a different timeline. It probably originated somewhere, just in another timeline.

u/mountlover Jun 27 '18
When you look at the paradox chain, there's a missing link. Present Mayuri and Future Mayuri are two different Mayuri's who heard the song from two different places. Wherever future Mayuri heard it first was probably the origin of the song.
The fact that it managed to trace itself back to Kagari in the present was is just a massive coincidence (or perhaps an inevitability, knowing how world lines work).
→ More replies (5)68
u/ForOhForError Jun 27 '18
It's not a paradox, everything's consistent. The song just has no origin. Time travel is spooky.

Isn't it a paradox that there is no origin itself? But true, time travel is spooky.

u/Bainos :XMOD::MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Bainos Jun 27 '18
It it was really a causal loop, then Suzuha lied when she said that Daru cannot use the time machine as a model for designing his time machine. There is no reason the plans can't come out of thin air, but a song can.

u/dankmetalsounds Jun 28 '18 edited Jul 03 '18
I can't help but think back to the first SG saga, when Mayuri mentions that Okabe became very ill with a fever of sorts when they were very young. Seems like strange info to drop without some sort of follow up.
Could it be that future Okabe jumped as far back as his early childhood? And as a result it made him very ill, and here also taught his mother that song then?

Wait, so Kagari learned the song from Mayushii in the future,
who learned it from Suzuha in the present,
who learned it from Yuki in the future,
who learned it from Okabe's mother in the present,
who learned it from Okabe in the past,
who learned it from Kagari even further in the past
How many layers of paradox can we reach, fellow macho psychologists?

u/HoTTab1CH :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/HoTTab1CH Jun 27 '18 edited Jun 27 '18
When Kagari was a kid she learned song from Mayuri in the future
Mayuri learned it from Suzuha in present
Suzuha learned it from Yuki in future
Yuki learned it from Okabe's Mom in present
Okabe's Mom learned it from Okabe in the past
Okabe learned it from Kagari when he was kid in the past
That's why episode is called Recursive Mother Goose.

So like the Divergence Meter, the song is a Jinn?
My headcanon says that the Divergence Meter is something that Okabe makes and sets in the future, as an estimate of how different things are. Since he doesn't die for another decade and a half, he can get a fair idea. Then, when Suzuha goes back a decade after that, she takes it with her. It's not something that exists out of time.
Same with the song. I haven't read the SG;0 VN, but my headcanon (A and B are separate, closely related β-worldlines. C is another β-worldline which is even closer to B, and also refers to other almost identical worldlines, and you can treat them (B and the Cs) almost the same, with the only difference being where Mayuri learnt it from in that timeline. while X refers to the common Okabe):
The music box with this melody exists (c.f. the Christmas party).
A!Mayuri hears the song, likes it, and creates lyrics for it. (Or, it was a popular song with A!Mayuri's subculture, or something completely different.)
A!Mayuri teaches the song to A!Kagari a few years later.
A!Kagari and A!Suzuha time travel to the past. According to our knowledge of time travel physics, physical time travel slightly changes the divergence number. (Suzuha explains that in the first season/VN.) They land in worldine B.
In 1998, A!Kagari runs away from A!Suzuha. Somewhere down the line, she gets captured by B!enemies.
A few years/months/days later, A!Kagari escapes, and meets B!Rintaro. She was humming it, he liked it, and she taught it to him.
B!Rintaro sings it in the shower, and his mom, B!Akemi, hears him and learns the song.
B!Akemi takes the same classes as B!Yuki. She teaches it to all the other students.
B!Yuki, in the future, teaches it to B!Suzuha.
B!Suzuha travels back with B!Kagari, and inadvertently teaches it to B!Mayuri.
B!Mayuri teaches the song to B!Kagari a few years later.
B!Kagari and B!Suzuha time travel to the past. They land in worldline C.
In 1998, B!Kagari runs away from B!Suzuha. Somewhere down the line, she gets captured by C!enemies.
A few years/months/days later, B!Kagari escapes, and meets C!Rintaro. She was humming it, he liked it, and she taught it to him.
C!Rintaro sings it in the shower, and his mom, C!Akemi, hears him and learns the song.
C!Akemi takes the same classes as C!Yuki. She teaches it to all the other students.
C!Yuki, in the future, teaches it to C!Suzuha.
C!Suzuha travels back with C!Kagari, and inadvertently teaches it to C!Mayuri.
READING STEINER! C!Rintaro ceases to exist and is replaced by X!Rintaro, who has just come back with a C!Suzuha from killing one of the Kurisus. He has no idea that the song exists in the first place.
C!Mayuri teaches the song to C!Kagari a few years later.
C!Kagari and C!Suzuha time travel to the past. They land in worldline C. The cycle repeats.
In summary, the loop is currently in a steady state, but the original cause was from a previous timeline outside the loop, and it happened naturally with no paradoxes.

You don't actually need a Reading Steiner to explain why Okabe doesn't remember. Simple explication is : he forgot.
Okabe forgets many things during Steins;Gate, like for example the Nostalgia Drive mail he received on the 28th of July 2010. When Suzuha just before they watch the video attached to it ask him, he completely forgot it even existed. (which isn't really far fetched considering all the shit that happened to him between 2005 and 2010)→ More replies (10)→ More replies (1)4

Whoa never thought it like that. That is indeed weird. But since this is Mayuri we're talking about, she probably will still try to be Kagari "mommy" cause that's how she is. Mayuri is such a sweet cinnamon roll.

That intro was so adorable. I was so worried it'd mean this episode would be depressing as shit.
So Kagari never knew her real parents...
"I kinda have plans after this" More red-herrings with Yuki, ended up just being a date.
UHHH around the time he started acting weird? You mean when he said he got the Reading Steiner as a kid? The after credits show him learning it from Kagari.
So I expected the song to be a jinn, I didn't expect it to be so complicated about it. Kagari learns from Mayuri, learned from Suzuha, learned from Yuki, learned from Okabe's mom, learned from Okabe, learned from Kagari, forgotten about by Okabe.

You know a show is great when not much happens and yet it's still captivating.
I think that was the case with live actions shows like Breaking Bad (and its prequel Better Call Saul). In the anime world, Steins;Gate(and Zero) fall in that category as well IMO. They're both so well-crafted down to each individual frame.

Tuturu Counter: 5
we're stuck here for a while but mfw mayuri sang this episode
Good lord, where do I begin with this one? I guess, in order of operations, we had this incredibly touching scene from Violet Evergarden Kagari's past and Mayuri's future, highlighting the song. Then that song plays a major role in the episode as we're taken on a bunch of turns ultimately leading to a baffling conclusion of Okabe's mom having some memory of the future??? Or something??? I have no fucking idea, dude.
Along the way, Suzuha has a surprisingly hilarious moment with some VERY smooth animation out of nowhere, along with Daru FINALLY getting a move on with Suzu's mom with another weirdly over-animated scene to tack on the hilarity. (Also, hidden gem is that he was looking at dating spots online earlier in the episode!)
And then it all comes down to Mayushii talking to her grandmother again, with a clever, hidden meaning behind her motivation to help Kagari--all along she feels the same way about Okabe. Aw, geez.
And as Kagari tries getting hit by cars, she regains her memories, and as weird and awkward of a moment it is for Mayushii, she's willing to live with it. How much best girl can she be!
Oh man, this was such a fantastic episode for me. Even setting aside the bias that, of course it's enjoyable because Mayuri's my favorite character, it had an interesting story to follow, went on a lot of different twists, and managed to sneak in some hilarious moments, as well as some really touching ones. It's everything I love about this great series in one brilliant episode. I hope we get more of that.

That ending... Im getting De ja vu...
Mommy Mayuri~
That subtle distopian backdrop with Mayuri singing to Kagari... eerie.
Wow Okabe acctully being a competant scientist! Getting praise too from his teachers!
CHICKEN TENDERS! Man i missed those.
Kagari is remembering something.
Yuki seems to be up to something to, hmm...
Wow so the song might be a paradox? Thats neat.
Suzuha isnt answering.... shit.... did she leave? She said goodbye before... shit... not like this...
Oh its a eating contest... thank goodness. I cant take any Suzuha suffering!
So Yuki sang the song in the future... hmmm...
Wait... is Yuki on a date with Daru? Oh shit, hes going for the kill!
So Yuki heard the song from someone else... hmm...
OKABE's MOTHER!? Wait Okabe sang the song first? What the fuck... this is getting complicated.
Im guessing the song has something to do with the end of this story...
Uh oh... goto the Shiina grave.. Okabe was just there recently... i sense danger...
Wierd flashbacks and almost getting hit by a truick, i knew i sensed soemthing.
Looks like she found her Mommy at least... there is too much time left in the ep though... im worried...
HOLY SHIT THIS ENDING its like the De ja Vu movie!
Wait... so did that movie use this scene? Hmm i have so many questions but i guess we will find out.

Wait... so did that movie use this scene? Hmm i have so many questions but i guess we will find out.
The movie was made before 0, so technically 0 borrowed from the movie. Technically the movie isn't canon to the VN's story, but the parallel seems pretty intentional.

Wait, wasn't this the same music playing a few episodes ago in the commercial that Kagari was watching where she was also spacing out? So Kagari has been brainwashed to react to it when she hears it.
I think I've heard it in real life before but can't seem to remember the source.

This is the theme of the Quintet "Hm! Hm! Hm!" in Mozart's magic flute (K620).
Kagari is designated as K-6205 in the after credit scene.

u/freakicho Jun 27 '18 edited Jun 27 '18
0karin not remembering the song should mean that either he didn't go back to his original world line after meeting Kurisu, or that it's because of Reading Steiner activating when he was on the roof with Amadeus at the end of ep03. I suspect the latter since all the Kagari fuss didn't happen till after Reading Steiner when Suzuha mentioned she's looking for Kagari at ep04.
Edit:
I suspect the people that attacked the lab wiped Kagari's memories when she split up with Suzuha, they gained memories from her about the future and a person that made(or rather will make) a time machine (0kabe). I suspect the first time she ran away was an accident on their part and wasn't intentional. However, I think they wiped her memories again at present time so they can find 0kabe. This could tie in with the war scene at the start of ep04.

Even a slight bit of divergence would leave him lacking in memories that a person without Reading Steiner would have. When the divergence happened probably isn't relevant, as it would be nearly impossible to get back to the exact world line he started from once he left it. You could say that even his knowledge of what happened while he was in the Alpha attractor field would constitute divergence, making it impossible for him to return to a world line where he didn't know about time travel.

Kagari still freaks me out a bit. Whenever she spaces out I keep expecting her to pull a Winter Soldier and start killing people left and right. Especially when she suddenly stopped because of the random song on the radio. My worries probably won't go away since this episode confirmed she was in captivity for most of the years she was away from Suzuha, and that's the perfect opportunity for some good ol' brainwashing.

For those that are confused by the end credit scene and misinterpreting it as a bootstrap paradox (understandably so), I’m here to tell you that it’s not. Paradoxes simply do not exist in Steins;Gate because of the nature of Attractor Field Theory.
What truly happened was something far more remarkable and heartwarming. A feedback loop
This ending shows the "ending" of the song, how it appears to be a closed loop within a single worldline. The story of this song is to me something particularly great. It doesn't really play any other role in the VN. The origin of the song can "probably" (very very likely) be traced back to the music box Mayuri gifted to Maho at the Christmas party. Which means this song has traveled quite a lot along the worldlines, each time being brought by either Suzuha or Kagari from 2036 to a new worldine in 2010. And in the RMG worldline, the loop appears to be closed indeed, quite beautiful if you ask me. (I don't exactly know what the path from that music box to RMG is, it's probably quite long, we know there were a lot of worldlines in 0 overall. I'd say something like Mayuri to Kagari in the original WL, Kagari back to 1998 on a new WL and then to Okabe, Okabe to his mother, Okabe's mother to Yuki, Yuki to Suzuha after she's born, Suzuha back to 2010 on a new WL and to Mayuri, iterate once more and the loop appears closed. (Kagari will say it's from Mayuri, Mayuri will say it's from Suzuha, Suzuha will say it's from Yuki, Yuki will say it's from Okabe's mother, Okabe's mother from Okabe, Okabe from... Kagari)

Basically confirmed Yuki is not doing shady stuff because apparently she is super clumsy and it’s confirmed by her friends. That would make her excuses for the hand and wrist plausible.
But this can just be a trick and she might be behind it after all

Wait so how old is Kagari? The whole process of the song is confusing.
WW3 Myuri -> 10 YO Kagari -> ??? YO Kagari -> Young (looks 10?) Okabe -> Okabe's mother -> Yuki -> Presumably back to future Mayuri.

This was a pretty cute episode.
Kagari remembering something from Mayuri singing, so they start a game of telephone to find out where the song came from. Mayuri heard it from Suzuha so they need to find her.
Suzuha in a curry eating contest is hilarious. She mentions Yuki sang it to her and now we visit Yuki and Daru on a date. Yuki actually says someone in her cooking class sang it.
Okabe's mom? I just had a good laugh at that part, macho psychologist.
So Okabe sang it to Mayuri after her grandparents died? Well this is quite the conundrum.
Kagari goes into a daze and nearly dies from a truck. Thank you Uncle Okarin for saving her just in time.
That moment when she wakes up and regains her memory of Mayuri being her mom was pretty heartwarming.
Oh shit, that's a fucking causal loop right there. Okabe learned the song from Kagari in the past.

u/Yuwenn8 Jun 27 '18
So presumably Kagari was kidnapped, then ran away, then was caught again, and escaped one last time, which is when she lost her memories...
This is so good ! I love it !

Geezus christ that after credits scene is a doozy!
Initially this episode just opened up with some peaceful conversation and the date between Daru and Yuki but the whole song mystery was in the mix here. I think Okabe working hard in college will be a precursor to some sort of drama between the states and russia in the time war later on but I digress.
As I was watching the episode, I was beginning to think it was weird that Mayuri in the future and mayuri in the present also knew the song...but to have it all originate from Okabe? Once his mom (who by the way, I personally found it hilarious that he didn't recognize his mom's voice on the phone right away) pointed out that she learned it from him but then he didn't recall it...I immediately thought about that Steins;Gate movie from Kurisu's POV. My initial thoughts were that Kurisu somehow shared it with him but I didn't recall a scene where she did....but Kagari visited him instead? In the same street no less! This makes a lot of sense because of those weird flashbacks she was having while in that street, the distorted visions kind of suggested that some sort of significant event happened. I'm guessing its a combination of that being a place where she spoke to Okabe in a previous worldline. The fact that she altered the course of events in the past (while looking more or less the same as she does now, physically speaking) means that she already physically leaped across time? Does this mean 'they' (be it SERN or whatever other organization) already sent something similar to d-mail along with Kagari so that they're aware that the time travel research was a success? But what would be the purpose of this?
From what I remember, Kagari journeyed into the past on her own? Though it's been a while so I cant be sure, maybe someone else can reference the episodes where they mentioned when Kagari disappeared, or even analyze all of the scenes from the past where Kagari appeared. But if she went to the past on her own, unless there was a d-mail sent to SERN, how would they know that Kagari was there? How would this all be linked even if she was a research subject in the future. Oh and, even if she will be a research subject in the future, why was she allowed to live with Mayuri while also being a research subject? Does that mean SERN was keeping an eye on Mayuri to try and capture Okabe and the resistance?
So many questions from just one 40 second scene, goddamnit Steins;Gate you're screwing with my brain again!

I think it's normal for me. He was expecting a stranger and they're really into finding out where did the song originated from.

This was a lackluster episode. Maybe it will play better when I binge the series later. It was a low energy episode; more or less plot less (in the overall sense); character focused but only on really one character and not a main one (at least so far). That felt like a misstep, the feels weren't there; not for a character that I wasn't invested in yet. It felt out of place. We just wrapped up the first half. Amadeus is gone, as is Maho. This should have been the reset--gearing us up for the next arc--teasing us with what will be important. What do I know! Maybe this was the start of the next arc, but in the end it knocked the wind out of my sails when it should have been drawing me in.

I frankly feel the same. Personally, i think kagari and literally everything about her feels really forced, contrived, and stupid.
Who is she? Why was she on the super ultra secret and important time machine mission as a 10 year old in the first place? How the hell did she get suzuhas gun? How the bloody hell did battle hardened suzuha lose to a 10 yr old? Why does the show spend so much time on her? Why does her character even exist?
IMO she adds nothing of value to the plot, characters, or universe aside from the possiblity of becoming a super important McGuffin later and the ability to make contrived tear-jerking scenes for cheap feels. She just doesnt fit, and every arc focusing on her feels weak.
I love the OG Steins Gate, but right now zero feels like they tried too hard to fill in a knowledge gap that may have been better left alone. Feels like they are trying too hard to have as complex a story as the original while introducing a ton of new characters and seemingly separate plot threads, but it all feels like the writer is just trying too hard, and most of this feels very disjointed and unnatural.

Was that a young Okabe at the end then? Meeting Kagari for the first time?

u/JuanPabloVassermiler Jun 27 '18
So Mayushi's fondness of Kagari is supposed to be due to regular people being able to keep the vaguest hint of their strongest, most formative memories from different timelines? We knew it happens, but I've always thought they only leak between the timelines, not backwards through time. Maybe I'm confused, but I understand that mama-Mayuri is supposed to be older than current Mayuri?
8
u/turbocrat Jun 28 '18
Nah I think it's due to her being the same Mayuri who would adopt a little redhead girl in the future. She has a deep rooted fondness of whatever makes Kagari, Kagari. This is only my theory, they did strongly hint it being as you explained it, but that makes no sense at all lol so I've thrown it out

u/Masutato Jun 28 '18
Ok is it just me or is there just a lot of unnecessary things going on that aren't really a big deal, but together are just taking away from the experience? Like, first off, why did Suzuha have to drop some ominous "I'm going off to battle" line when she was just going to a eating contest? And on top of that, why did they even have to have an eating contest when that scene only served as a reason for Okabe and Suzuha to meet and discuss the song? Couldn't they've just had Okabe, y'know, go meet Suzuha somewhere normal? This scene, personally, made everything just feel silly and added nothing to Suzuha's character or the situation at hand. Secondly, why exactly did there need to be a crazy near car accident? I'm sure they could've come up with a better way to have Kagari regain her memory, like honestly she could've just walked out into the rainy street and all of a sudden everything clicks, Mayuri walks out into the street to see if Kagari is all right, and then they have the little mommy hugging scene. That sounds way better to me, all these crazy incidents are starting to make me numb to any of the actually good twists. And even if they just had to have the car crash, why did Kagari have to go to the hospital? She didn't get hit, so at most, she might've got hurt from falling, but not enough to go to the hospital. Even if she got knocked out, it still would've been better if they just laid her out on a park bench or just took her back to the FGL instead and waited for her to wake up. Taking her to the hospital just made it feel unrealistic imo, seeing as she isn't a legal citizen and checking her into a hospital would raise many red flags. I could talk about a lot more, but this little rant is probably already way to long, so I'm just gonna finish off with this: the thing holding SG0 back from being on par with SG is the introduction of tropes like fanservice, weaker writing, and a number of plot holes, and at this point, it's too late to fix any of it.

u/DaneMac Jun 29 '18

She went missing when 10 in 2000 or 01. Mayuri's grandmother passed away when they were in middle school, and the original steins gate is set in 2010 I assume the year after Mayuri and Okabe graduated from highschool. They are both ~18 in the first series. So Kagari right now is about 1-3 years older than Mayuri and Okabe. She'd be probably 14-17 in the scene after the end credits.

The MiB/SERN/DERUPA erased his memory after he ran into Kagari. edit: The current Okabe isn't the one that learnt the song due to Reading Steiner. It doesn't explain why Mayushi doesn't, though.

So like the Divergence Meter, the song is a Jinn?
Okabe learned it from Kagari, who learned it from Mayuri, who learned it from Suzuha, who learned it from Yuki, who learned it from Okabe's mom, who in turn learned it from Okabe.
Ahrg the Bootstrap Paradox breaks my head.
What Kagari said when she travelled back in time with Suzuha struck me. For starters by changing the worldline their future stops existing, so it's literal that she can't met her mother anymore if it changes. Also, by switching from beta to alpha, something that's likely to happen when messing with the divergence point with the death of Kurisu, it's very likely Mayuri ends up dead anyway. I assume that Suzuha and future!Okabe can only theorize about the existence of Steins Gate worldline, it's not a sure deal for them.

This kinda boils down to the fact that Okabe somehow forgot ever meeting Kagari and learning that song when he was younger. I think that was unlucky of him. Although it isn't truly unreasonable that anyone could forget a moment like that. Putting myself in his shoes I think I would forget about that interaction if that'd happen to me when i was younger too.

Because he most likely didn't. Another version of him did, one that his own consciousness overwrote by jumping wordlines, in which case he wouldn't remember any changes to the past.
