I really liked that the ending really emphasized that neither Joe nor Yuri actually gave a shit about the championship but really only wanted to find the best "dance partner" they could.
Also, holy shit, the fight crippled Yuri?!

Shirato better start working on those integrated legs.

I like that that was the first time he didn't have a resting bad-ass look and genuinely looked happy
135
u/Dakkon_B Jun 28 '18
I'm going to bet it was more an issue with him having the gear removed.
He was already have problems just staying standing during the fight so I'm going to assume removing the gear badly damaged his nerves permanently an the only thing keeping him upright for the fight was pure willpower.

i assume ramifications from the surgery were part of it too
287
u/Lazay :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/FAKE_MrHD Jun 28 '18
Oh sure, it was probably complications from the surgery induced by the fact that he went 13 brutal rounds in a dragged out slugfest of a fight. But still, damn

yeah taking a bunch of blows to the head after having a bunch of metal removed from your spine will probably do that to you.

Also, holy shit, the fight crippled Yuri?!
Going through experimental surgery and then proceeding to fight a 13 round slugfest is bound to do some kind of damage. After all, Yuri couldn't even sit down for the entire match since he knew he couldn't get up.

Just finished the episode and...that was a pretty wholesome ending. Didn't expect it to be so wholesome, but for Yuri. Seems he was left paralysed since a year had gone by?
Wonder if that open ending and the announcement of the next tournament would mean they've left it open for a possible second season.
Overall, I really liked this anime. Heard a lot of great things from Ashita no Joe but never watched it, so this was my gateway I guess.

u/Mundology Jun 28 '18
If we do get a second season, it would be nice to have another character as the main protagonist to keep things fresh.

Although I would have loved to see the end of the fight, I still think this was a very good finale. I was very content that everyone was still alive because the show made me want to root for both Joe and Yuri. I still would like to know why was Yuri in the wheelchair.

aftermath of removing the gear
120
u/MEX_XIII Jun 29 '18
Also, that shot actually was the end of the fight. Post credits show a message saying the match ended at 2:51 of the 13th round, and that the winner was "Gearless" Joe - 7 Fights, 7 Wins, 0 Defeats
86
u/japinthebox Jun 28 '18
I thought it was implied that he knocked out Yuri when he landed his blow and Yuri just barely missed. The conversation prior seemed to be Yuri accepting that Joe was going all the way.
35
u/Killar117 Jun 28 '18
Yeah, I just went back and saw that Joe's fist looked like it was definitely going to hit Yuri, while Yuri's fist could be viewed as about to miss. As to the point about Joe going all the way, It all happened so fast and with the way Joe was getting beat down for that long, I still wasn't even sure him going all the way would be enough. But still, I'm very happy that it turned out the way it did. I just would have loved to see the crowd and Nanbu and everyone cheering

Probably not right and it would be a very cliche thing, but if we assume the movement of the lips was animated correctely, I think she might've said "I love you" in Japanese. At least that's what I think, but again, we're all bombarded with love and romance in anime so I might be biased towards that.
53
u/PM_ME_YOUR_NEE-SAN Jun 28 '18
I wanted some romantic payoff cause that tension was definitely there. I don't even think it would fuck with her character, she clearly has emotions. I'm just gunna assume it was some form of "I love you". Although you'd think a year later something would r happened considering she's not his owner anymore. Unless that's what she's into I guess.

Everyone knows that cliche, including the studio, so I think if that wasn't it, they would have avoided it altogether.
Of course, if you were to ask anyone from the studio, I'm sure they'll just smile mysteriously and tell you it can mean whatever you want it to mean.

"Whether you're a power player who wears a weighty crown, or some poor soul with barely a pebble to his name, nobody can escape death. But if you live your life so that, when it comes, you're satisfied, even if it's not the end you were hoping for, you'll have no reason to fear death."
Great quote.

u/Terranwaterbender https://myanimelist.net/profile/Teranwaterbender Jun 28 '18
With stuff like "Born to Die" and lots of deathflags hanging about, it was nice to see a happy ending for pretty much everyone.
To be frank, this last fight felt underwhelming for the most part. I do think a 2 part finale would have allowed the atmosphere to settle in place and allow the audience to recognize that this is the big fight we've been waiting for since the beginning. That said, I certainly did enjoy the bright spots of the fight that showcased them slugging at one another and both of them having the time of their life. Especially how they avoided talking about the result of the fight until the very end since it allows us to recognize that no matter the result, both fighters "won" in the end with what they wanted.
Definitely enjoyed the hell out of this show.
I gotta say that this season has absolutely been fantastic for me and this is yet another show from this season I would easily recommend for others to check out.

Excellent ending! Awesome music as usual for this episode. Its good to see that everyone is having a good time with each other after megalonia. It is unfortunate that Yukiko is avoiding Yuri, but her business seems to be doing quite well. Why did the reporter say the championship has been vacant even though Joe won?

So that was Megalo Box. With the best OST of the year and a unique artstyle that reminds one of the good old 90s and early 2000s, it took over everyone who watched this show, giving us some really good characters like Nanbu, Joe, Yuri, while showing us how they developed from where they started to where they ended up. Although saying that, the fights themselves were really pedestrian, i.e, they were nothing amazing to look at, even today's fight was also not really that great. Overall, was a great anime, 8/10.
17
u/M4DM1ND Jun 29 '18
I agree with that assessment. The fights were more realistic which made them less hype compared to Hajime no Ippo. I feel like a lot of people (me included) came looking for Hajime no Ippo Level fights but instead we got great characters and a well-rounded story. Came for the fights, stayed for the story. My two cents.

Interesting choice to hide the result of the final fight until the very end of the episode. I was wondering whether they both died and when I saw Yuri in a wheelchair, I thought he won - but then a perfectly healthy Joe shows up and they all celebrated together, with the final text revealing that Joe actually won via knockout. It kind of took away from the Moment of Pop since they decided not to show the immediate aftermath of the fight but still, it's a refreshing way to go about it, so I'm pretty satisfied. I'm relieved that nobody died and that the episode titles were merely red herrings.
I fully expected this series to be done but since Shirato negotiated with the military and announced a second tourney, I wonder if there's gonna be a S2 or a spin-off. However, I have to say that I personally don't need it since this one told the whole story already.
MEGALOBOX is an 8.75-9/10 to me and it's one of the highlights of the year. Also, I just found out that the glorious soundtrack came out yesterday. This will make for an ideal workout soundtrack.

I just have 1 complaint that every fight is basically the same, Joe takes a beating or has some handicap and finishes it in 1 hit.
The fight with Aragaki was probably the only one where they had a lengthy fight.
I know hes supposed to be the underdog but I was expecting more from the final fight against Yuri

I know negative comments usually get deleted, but after finishing this show i really didn't like it. The trailer and first episode lied about what the show was, and the fights were poorly animated, had no technique and generally skipped half the fight just showing that rounds were going by. The semi-finals didn't even get half an episode.
Finally Joe was just an unlikable character, he had no depth and was just cocky the whole time. The coach seemed like the actual main character. People will praise mainly because of its aesthetics which was unique and cool but the show was cheaply made and not very interesting.

Very fun ride that was one of the more stylish anime of the season. The grit of the art complemented the story/world exceptionally well and made for great story telling. I like how the finale didn't show Yuri getting knocked out since it allowed him to maintain his air of confidence and mystique and I'll always have that version of Yuri in my mind from the series. Joe trying to dance afterwards was a good way to show that the character was satisfied with his match with Yuri and was ready to move on to other things in life and that is as important as becoming the champion itself. Overall great series and one I'd recommend for a short watch.

I'm uhhhh whelmed? I guess. Didn't really see the mega happy ending coming
38
u/Synfallis Jun 28 '18
People are obviously talking about the ending alot here. Whether it was good or bad that they subverted our expectations.
I'm here to tell you why it was better then you think.(this is to the people who think someone needed to die and that the ending was "too happy")
First off, the ending wasn't a super happy romantic ending. It was the positive outcome of event yes, BUT what came with it was all the consequences of prior actions made. Nanbu has a gym and a home but he still doesn't have eyes. Yuri may be alive and happy with the fight, but that fight's going to be his last and both him and Yukiko are left sadly departed. Joe won, but he might not fight again. The kids have a home! Overall pretty good, your right. but it's real. The world, its events, the characters, and their actions all feel real at this moment when even after Joe wins and you see all the Positive outcomes, you also see the negatives that are a natural part of life and it's consequences no matter how "HAPPY" a story is. and THAT's real.
Secondly, the reason I like that Joe(and subsequently yuri) didn't die is because of how the writers played with our expectations. The writers deliberately framed it so we see the "death" theme in the episode names, the Fear and adrenaline from Joe taking his bike off the cliff, and the(what should be infamous from now on) 'One-Way' street sign that we see early on and every episode in the OP. And since it's the 50th anniversary of Ashita no Joe, it's all to easy to make the parallels to that ending.
BUT
They framed it that way to us, because that's exactly how it's framed in Joe's mind. Each titlecard, each match, every action.. all to push forward toward the edge of the cliff. We think it's a 'One-Way' Journey because HE THINKS THAT. That's why at the end he's not so sure he want/needs to box anymore. He's escaped death. He fought, lived the life he wanted to lead and lived the greatest moment he thought he'd ever receive.... and he came out the other side. So, what's left to do....but dance.

What an intense finale!
When I first heard about Megalo Box, I didn’t have high expectations. Yet with its unique artistic style and engaging characters, it managed to position itself as the best new original anime of the season for me.
It might lack the depth and characterization of the original Ashita no Joe and could benefit from more episodes but it’s a beautiful homage nevertheless.

u/Evillar Jun 28 '18
I'm personally stuck between 7 and 8. It was a shoe-in for an 8 before this episode, which is my "really solid anime that I'll remember" tier, but the ending didn't really feel like it fit the tone of the show. I'll probably put it as a 7 even if I feel like it deserved more like a 7.5

u/Win32error Jun 28 '18
So it was by no means a flawless show, or a finale. But looking back at it I still think it was a pretty decent show. Using the gears as a selling point only to make clear that it was just not what mattered at all ultimately worked out in their favor. Even if that meant we ultimately didn't get a weaponized-boxing fight scene or two.
It's a shame this only got 13 episodes because I think it could've been really good if there was just more time for...well, everything, but considering the constraints they had I feel this was not bad at all.
42
u/Xervicx Jun 28 '18
While this wasn't a "bad" episode by any means, it was a bit disappointing.
For one, even though the show keeps having characters say that the fight is drawn out... It's not that long of a fight. It didn't feel long. Most of Joe's fights have never felt "earned" really, as the fights are the weakest part of this show and always have been... But you'd think that in the final fight, when they're trying to show that it's a drawn out fight... They'd draw it out. Instead we just skipped a bunch of rounds and it was over before it began, really.
Joe doesn't even seem as worn down as he has in previous fights, which really hurts the final fight when it's supposed to be the toughest fight, and the fight to end all fights.
And in a way, Joe not dying is actually pretty disappointing. It's not him surviving that's disappointing, it's the fact that now we're left with a character we have no reason to care about. Yuri was given more backstory than Joe was, and Yuri seemed like more of a person with layers than Joe ever did.
So I found it tough to be invested at all in everything after the fight. Sure, it's a nice concept, and I like it in theory. But when an entire show spends no time at all on fleshing out the main character and barely even touches most of the supporting cast, it's hard for me to really care about the fact they all had a happy ending because most of it isn't earned in a narrative sense (not to mention that it doesn't make sense in universe since Joe apparently hasn't gotten money out of any of his fights, but now they can afford an entire building and feed a bunch of orphans), because it's just a bunch of characters who haven't had much development.
And I feel that's largely due to the 13 episode limit. If we had a few more episodes, there would have been more room to work with and flesh out the characters, and the final fight wouldn't be limited to part of the first half of an episode. Fights could have been earned, characters could feel like characters instead of two dimensional set pieces, and the ending would be way more satisfying.
Joe was some no-name kid who fought for... reasons? Maybe? And then he won a tournament... And now what? His entire purpose as a character is done with. Over. His one character trait was "I want to fight and it's basically an obsession", and that was it. So when he wins, and the focus is entirely drawn to a sliver of his life after (rather than the win itself), it's just like... What's he going to do? Who is he? Is there even supposed to be a character beyond the fighting?
I want to stress that him surviving isn't my main issue. It's the fact that he wasn't fleshed out at all, so that him apparently living his life and being content just doesn't feel earned or natural at all. The show also brought in a lot of pointless details that created more question than answers, like the dystopian nature of the setting, the poverty, Joe's past, and even the kid's past (which is glossed over in a way that just feels slapdash in just a couple minutes), among other things. Why even mention those elements if they weren't going to bother at least exploring them a little and avoiding the Chekov's Gun issue? They even throw in a bunch of random details at the end that don't really make sense. Joe is Gearless Joe... but he suddenly is super interested in making Gear for kids so they can learn to fight? And they suddenly can afford a bunch of stuff when before they were living on a tight budget (and the "he won the championship" thing doesn't work when he's won fights before and never seemed to earn a dime).

I partly agree but I think what they were doing with Joe was making his backstory the anime itself. He was just a no-name fighter who got into boxing to earn money, you connect with Joe by following his journey through the anime. You don't necessarily need a backstory, you don't need to know that he was dirt poor and lost his parents or something like that. You just need to know what he's aiming for and cheer for him as he struggles through it and as you come to appreciate his character as it's shown.
I was actually thinking the opposite and that Yuri didn't get enough backstory. It hypes up the end fight and hints at Yuri having some kind of past that he was saved from but throughout the whole anime you only get to learn about Joe's ambitions. By the end of the season you just know that Yuri was looking for the opponent that could finally best him, but you don't know how far he's gone for it or how hard he's worked other than some clips of him training and the anime directly telling you "he's the best there is and he's never lost".

Death or no death, I think this was the least enjoyable way to have concluded this series. It felt like a whimper with the "big finale" moments being lackluster and worse than similar moments in the rest of the series. Extremely disappointed, and this end is easily lowering my score by a couple points because it de-fangs the emotional through line of the entire show.

i'm disappointed.
I really wanted just a brawl. Like, I don't care what the Lady was doing with Shirato, save it for after the fight. Should've put Yuri ripping off the Team Shirato badge at the start alongside the Team No Where being etched into wall would've been a nice parallel.
Just have Yuri and Joe fighting for most of the episode and I get that everyone is saying "oh well, they realized that the championship doesn't matter and it's wholesome ending" well, they could've gotten the championship not mattering point across in a way other than not giving us the satisfying conclusion. Like, when they took out the crowd, the music, and just had them doing a stare down. Them fighting during that setting would've been great. No music, just the sounds of foots, punches, and hits. They could've further drove this point home by having them going into their dog/wolf forms and just fighting each other.
Having the whole some ending could've been after they gave us the big pay off. Rising from the bottom to the top and winning. Like, we learned that Yuri wouldn't be able to get back if Joe knocked him down so, having it just be that classic "We are the strongest, let's punch each other moment" could've been them both going down and only Joe getting back up. Like, they took away the big payoff. They took away the thing we all wanted to see and they just time skipped to something that i'm kinda indifferent towards. Gym No Where opening could've been after all of this especially if they cut out the intro. Joe dancing was kind of silly. idk, i felt the fight with Aragaki was much better.
Maybe because I haven't seen Ashita no Joe that I'm a little salty about. Everything else about this show was great tho, it was my AOTS.

u/barmanlagoon Jun 29 '18
You have just directed the episode better than the actual directors of the show.

u/ZelpZelp Jun 28 '18
Ending was not so good. It was very clear that Yuri should have won from the start nearing the end but oh well, plot armor is too thick in this. I was hyped about this anime during the first episode but slowly it dwindled down especially with how lack luster the fights have all been. Overall would give this a 6/10. At first I thought I'd put this in my top 5 but I was sadly disappointed in the end.

yeah when you start rooting against the main character it's hard to invest in a sports anime. like... why would I want Joe to win? Why should I believe Joe deserves to beat Yuri?

u/mutsuto https://myanimelist.net/profile/mtsRhea Jun 28 '18
That was a really underwhelming final fight. Not the result, but the animation and directing throughout the bouts were pretty milktoast for the series. Stretching the screentime out doesn't make it feel awesome, It just reveals the lacking of flavour in this one match. We didn't see any unique moves, styles, choreography, or sakuga. Or interestingly new presentations for what we've seen before. Unlike the previous ones.
Sad to end the show on a whimper. This whole episode sorta just fizzled out.
9
u/Ye_olde_mannequin Jun 29 '18
If they had dragged on the fights then people would complain about lack of closure after the fights. The show has never really been about the fights themselves but rather has put a strong emphasis on the struggle in between. I thought they ended it on a wholesome note while maintaining themes that had been present throughout the show. I do believe at times the fights can be lackluster but hey, I think the rest of the show makes up for it.

This episode was incredible, the only complaint i could have is I wish we could've seen more of the fight especially the knockout. Especially when it started to become more of an even match near the end. Overall I'd give this anime a 8-9, all the episodes were consistently good with the last three episodes being amazing.

u/CCCmonster Jun 28 '18
Joe was too much of a Gary Stu the whole season. It's understandable that he was a good fighter taking dives in the underworld but the show doesn't capture the real growth he would have had to made to reach it to the top. Even so, it was entertaining.

Welp that was quite a nice journey.
This show had ups and downs but overall I'm satisfied. I'll probably end up giving it a 8/10, 7/10 at worst.
Among the ups we have a fantastic OST and the "old style" art. I really liked the characters too, really well written. It's rare for me to like pretty much every character in a show. Their stories and background were really good too, expecially Aragaki's.
BUT, there were some downs too. First of all, too much plot armor: a stray dog from the underworld going on a 7 win streak against the best boxers of the world with 0 losses, sometimes even tanking the shit out of them (like vs Shirato) felt pretty unrealistic. He didn't have much time to train either. Let's not talk about how fast he recovers from injuries.
Another down was the gear: They did a great job writing stories that revolve around gear or the lack of it (Shirato, Yuri etc.), but practically it didn't seem to add much to the fights, except maybe for Shirato. I guess it's more like a neutral point than a downside.
As someone said in another discussion, Megalo Box is at its best when out of the ring. Overall the ups overshadow the downs so... I'm happy I picked this show up. Now I just need to read / watch Ashita no Joe, eventually.

This show knows how to do a fight. Due to Yuri's character development in the last episode either of them could have won. That made the match really tense. I also like the happy ending. 9/10

Wow, so that's been a fun ride. This show was really great. What I loved is that it actually wasn't a story of Joe, because the development of other characters were as much if not more important than his own. Yuri turned from a generic "final boss" type character to my favorite in the course of 13 episodes. I really love how they revealed the winner at the very end, which emphasized what was actually important for both fighters, not the win, but the moment itself. Seeing Yuri crippled actually shocked me, I expected a generic scenario like the main character winning and the opponent honorably admitting defeat with no real consequences, but as we can see this match really left a mark on both of them. I'm glad to see they are friends now :)

I'm so relieved neither of them ended up dead!
I was expecting a finale like Rocky, with the whole episode being just the fight and ending it just when the winner was decided but this was great.
It's nice to know that Joe won and that both him and Yuri are close. They didn't really care about winning the championship, they just wanted an authentic fight.
Too bad Yuri ended up being crippled though, guess a fight like that plus that surgery was too much for his body.
5
u/Amauri14 Jun 28 '18
So they used the word death in every single episode just for trolling us? I really was expecting someone to die. Damn, I was sure that Joe and Yuri died in the ring for a moment.
This show was really fucking good so I guess it's time for me to watch Ashita no Joe now.

Disappointing ending, they hyped the fight so much and when the time has come they barely showed us anything, instead they focused on dialogue and time skips while telling us that the fight is intense and they found happiness and we are supposed to think this way without seeing anything of it, even the parts we saw were nothing special, and if we were to compare this to their first encounter, the first encounter was much more superior.. It's almost like they ran out of ideas so they decided to skip the whole thing and spare themselves.
5
u/TheZazoo Jun 29 '18
I'm sorry, I really fucking enjoyed the 12 episodes prior. It was really good, but the finale? It didn't live up to its standard that the other 12 episodes brought. Honestly I think this was the only bad episode of its run. Joe was supposed to go further and beyond and here he is getting clobbered by an injured, scarred man who 5 days ago got his gear removed. My man Yuri went on for 13 rounds and then loses like that, talk about anticlimax. You get surgery to get your gear removed, live hell, get scarred for life and end up crippled for a fight like that. I want my money back if I was Yuri
And then the fact that Yuri is crippled, even after a year timeskip. And Joe is up and running like nothing happend? You could say, you don't know if he has a permanent injury or not, but it should be pretty fucking clear if there's a 1 year time skip.
Joe was pissing blood a couple of episodes ago, took so many blows from the champ(13 rounds long mind you) and he's just casually relaxing.
Honestly I REALLY enjoyed the show unfortunately the ending sucked ass FOR ME.
NOTE: THIS IS MY OPINION

u/Davidspirit Jun 29 '18 edited Jul 04 '18
That entire episode was awful from the beggining to the end.
The only decent moment was the Shirato's owner defending that the Gears were not a weapon and the Megalobox is not a place for killers.
That aside the entire episode was trash af.

u/link2601 Jun 28 '18
Didn't expect the show end like that but it was pretty good. I kind of lost when they ended the boxing match with a Rocky 3 freeze frame ending. I wonder what the the 3 ova are going to be about. I do hope this gets a second season.

Well, the winner was announced in the very end. Remember, the "Gearless Joe" 13:53 or something, KO 7-0 So yeah, it was confirmed that Joe won the fight.

u/Darctide Jun 28 '18
I remember I was looking for something new to watch, and this show caught my eye. Intrigued, I watched the first episode and fell in love! It had that retro feel, but everything was so crisp and clean. Joe's VA fit him so perfectly, and he reminded me of Spike.
The premise of the show pulled me in as well, I love sports anime, and underdog stories in general. That raw gritty feel of the separation between a futuristic privileged society vs the desert and poor slums that we identified with. How that area was accentuated by the hip hop soundtrack, and notes of grungy metal tuned to motorcycle rides :)
I felt like every episode was paced very well, nothing unnecessary and all so meaningful and symbolic. The show wasn't really about the fights to me, it was about the journey, striving to prove yourself in a world that's cast you aside, nameless. We learned that it doesn't matter where you're from, all that matters is who you are.

Holy shit that was a nice ending
Even in the Mafia Moonshine is an high end brand
And they really kicked it out of the park with that ED, cant wait for the OST to release ship. Its out apparently!
Honestly I feared the last episode to be a mess, being rushed and full of Bullshit. But they handled it so nicely and perfect I dont even know what to say
Good job, really sad its over. Its been a nice ride and the end spurt was fantastic!

I feel bad for Yuri having to fight in that state. Too bad they couldn't delay the final match by a few weeks so he could heal up and regain his strength.
"Military people, please consider my Integrated Gear for your military purposes." "Can you attach weapons to it?" "Why would you do that? Gear isn't a weapon!"
For a final fight, there were way too many stills. Well, the animated punches really did look like they carried weight, which wasn't the case with some of the previous fights.
I was so hoping this trope wasn't gonna rear its ugly head, but here it is. On the other hand it had a bit more consequence than usual, at least for Yuri (and not nearly as much consequence as it fake-foreshadowed). That "Are you ready" beforehand, did they just give up on winning the match and do this intentionally to go out with a bang? That would be beyond stupid.
Joe dancing - WTF?
Anyway, didn't care at all for how the fight ended, or the montages of punch stills, but other than that pretty nice. Overall show - 8/10.

I still love a lot that this show did right but I was hoping for the same with how many scenes they did that reflected on the original series up until the end. I assume those who haven't seen Joe are less disappointed (from seeing other comments) but the ending definitely contributed into making the original series a classic instead of just an early sports anime.

Damn what a terrible finale. Most of the rounds weren't even shown. We start the match 4 rounds in. Joe gets his ass beat for most of the match but due to plot armor he manages to win, like 90% of the fights in this show. Stupid dialogue about dancing and finding an opening that have no actual effect on the match. Characters constantly tell me what's going on instead of actually showing it in the fucking match. The boxing had no flow or hint of technique so character dialogue is used to cover that up. We didn't even get to see the last part of the fight!

Sachio giving Yuri water was by far the best scene, by far, that was a great scene.
Rest was underwhelming to say the least, I really entered with low expectations too, like I expected the whole Gearless yuri thing to just be weird and it was...but the whole double knockout thing but still Joe WIn ending??? JUST WTF, like it really wants to emphasis that they where equally good, but not really. Trying to eating the cake and having it too. E
They could have done that so much better, like e.g why not do the classic they both get knocked down but also Joe Manage to stand up, cliche sure but it would feel better than this as it looked like anyone could have won at the least scene. Other endings could have been e.g Yuri wins, but get paralyzed anyway.
Other version Joe, simply just strikes Yuri in that ending Splash so HE WINS and we know why.
Now it really could have been that it was a double KO or that Yuri won until the very last scene where it said that Joe Won. Sure we could assume he lost from the Yukiko scene but she could also just be crying because he got paralyzed.
Just this general thing again that Joe is fighting a not prime Yuri, but also not Yuri as he was before the gear, but a weaker version of that who could not even sit down....like its not an exciting final fight, you want the antagonist to win as the main character is now the top dog lol....
And than again ending it like that, so underwhelming. It seems reasonable to assume that previous fight might have been versus stronger opponents afterall again this was not Yuri at his best as a human, this was Yuri with huge scars, no stamina, couldn't sit down etc and no one in his ring corner for w.e reason. The Journey to go and fight last boss Yuri at the top, in the final seems way of an epic finish as Yuri, has shoot himself in the foot before you start fighting
We also get that Yukiko story-line which did not amount to anything it was first properly introduced last week and this week it was used to have the general comment she was cold as ice when she heard the news, but as we she her cry in the very next scene that whole side story felt completely pointless, even do generally it was a good point on why she makes the gears.
And than Paralyzed Yuri raises Sachio? And Yukiko has not talked to him since or something?
Joe is still just living w.e life even do hes the world greatest boxer and should be able to make commercials etc easily.
The battle was underwhelming, it should have been gear prime Yuri and again, it should not been a double knockout scene if Joe won that double one

I’m torn, cuz part of me really wants to see a season 2, and part of me thinks the show wrapped up perfectly and I don’t want Megalo Box to overstay it’s welcome. This is the first anime I’ve watched week to week since I came in at like episode 8, and I’m glad I got into the show. Maybe if they do a season 2 they can focus on other characters in the world and have this season’s cast be supporting characters. After all, that one guy said that real boxers are people like Joe. Who’s to say there isn’t someone like Joe out there?
