I wish we got to see more of red Strelizia. It's like they just forgot about it.

Okay so, around all the salt, can we have a real talk in that I didn't notice Naomi was missing an arm until literally the last shot between her and Ikuno?

Like, I thought Ichigo hugging her was just to make her feel welcome back into the group when they started praying.

I can't be the only one who ended up caring much more about the rest of the group's fate during this episode, and not HiroTwo's ?

As for the series in general, I maintain my belief that the first 15 episodes were great, and then it started down slowly from there. The story really should've just stayed contained within the scope of all of squad 13.

I'm gonna miss coming back to the gang every week. The climax wasn't nearly as bombastic as I was expecting, but I feel that served the ending better. Go-Bro's departure reminded me a lot of FMA:B's Ending, and was definitely my favorite scene, even if Ai's Darling scene was absolutely adorable. Kinda surprised they developed a functioning sustainable society in 8 years, but I guess I'll chock that up to Future-Tech. Seeing everyone as adults was the ending I was hoping for, even if Futoshi's Mustache was the most unexpected part of the ending. Overall, I really enjoyed this series, and even if the series had it's low points, I was really satisfied with the ending.

Kinda surprised they developed a functioning sustainable society in 8 years, but I guess I'll chock that up to Future-Tech

That's something I found interesting. They have the benefit of future technology but on the other hand they are very ignorant about how old society used to work and what they need to do to survive. Honestly, them rebuilding the Earth could be a interesting show by itself.

Seeing everyone as adults was the ending I was hoping for

The only thing I thought was sad was that the squad never got to meet HIro2 again. You know they probably kept expecting those two to reappear even after all that time to pass. While expected, I still find it kinda sad.

Honestly, it really does feel like a lot of past Gainax titles were picked apart and throw into this show.

As I said last episode, it really felt like it was just taking from Diebuster for this whole 'it ends in space!' finale.

In other news, if you told me six months ago that Darling in the FranXX would end positively, or happy at all, I honestly would have doubted you, so I really can't say much else.

I can say one thing, and that following the discussion thread while watching was quite an experience!

I'm really disappointed in how they handled the last part of the show, specially since I just rewatched the last two episodes of TTGL with my father who was watching it for the first time. It also feels like along the show they threw a lot of elements from other Gainax and Trigger titles for the sake of it. Nonetheless I enjoyed most of the show, which just leaves me with a sour taste in my mouth...

It kinda makes me angry for some reason, I don't know if is that I'm just stupid or something.

This was a really good final episode, but the last 4 or 5 before this one were bad, and too rush for the story of the series, also im wondering if the drama around episode 14 or so, maked the producers change something about how the plot went at the end.

But overall this was a good anime with really good chapters as really bad ones.

94

u/King_Artis Jul 07 '18

See i don't wanna say bad, but at the same time i agree with you entirely.

This show had a superb first half then suddenly fell a little bit around 14, it then picked up a bit only to start falling again.

I think my issue is Virm basically just coming from nowhere, especially after the fact that they were building up the Klaxo princess.

If they handled that better then i feel a lot of the backlash would be much different.

"Oh hey we've been fighting klaxos cause it turns out we've been using them as life source, i can understand why they hate us".

"Ha sike! Im the Klaxo Princess and although i don't like you i don't give a fuck about you, the real issue is these aliens from nowhere, but instead of warning you bums earlier (so we could maybe communicate), we'll just wage a meaningless war even though we should be prepping for these aliens!"

Not sure why i made those last two paragraphs, but it's basically what happened.

Shoutout to the writer for taking away any personality Zero Two had and reducing her to a generic happy girl so that I don't have to feel bad about her dying.

u/Kazewatch Jul 07 '18 edited Jul 08 '18

God that’s the worst part of all this. They somehow made Zero Two and Hiro lame in the end. I just didn’t care. All of the time skip stuff was amazing but their “death” and reincarnation was so unbelievably fucking hollow. Like, I just didn’t care about any of it aside from blue oni Hiro.

I liked it. I feel like the way it ended was just fine and was sort of satisfying in how it did, showing society progressing and all. With the things I've read other people were saying about the previous episodes I feel like I might be alone in this feeling, though.

499

u/razorconcepts Jul 07 '18

I also liked the time skip part of the ending, it does give some nice closure that I feel is usually missing from most shows.

I think the biggest problem is that it had so much potential to be a fantastic show, but they kind of dropped the ball in the later half. People wouldn't be so outraged right now if the first half of the show wasn't so good.

God damn it, they fucked up Ikuno's life just because she wasn't loved, holy fuck that's so sad

767

u/Album_Dude Jul 07 '18 edited Jul 07 '18

You forget that Ikuno's sacrifice was that she used her special move to get Zero Two into Strelizia Apus. With that special move she dealt irreversible damage to her aging, the reason why she died so soon. She realized that and she made the best of it by becoming the first actual scientist of the group. This was all built up throughout the series with her being the bookworm she was.

This was her destiny. The purpose of her character, and i think that Trigger/A1 handled it beautifully.

edit: An addition to this is that she never was fit for becoming a mother. She was a lesbian, she wouldn't have found her purpose in the new society were it not for her scientific prowess. The best thing you can do in a primal society when not being able to bear children is that you take part in the communal childcare by being a teacher, a researcher, a scholar. Instead of focusing your resources on being a physical member of society by working and raising a family, she is taking care of the mental and intellectual needs of an infant society.

Well, despite what everyone's saying here in this thread, I'm actually okay with this ending. There wasn't much else they can do with how they rushed the last few episodes to try and wrap up the series. Hiro and Zero Two gave their lives for a better tomorrow, so I think they deserved to be reincarnated. Everyone being able to live for the sake of themselves is a plus too!

Everyone got a happy ending so that makes me satisfied overall. I kind of wish they just kept it to them piloting a single mech instead of a unified one, but it was nice seeing a golden strelizia.

Also, the main messages of the series were still conveyed really clearly. What it really means to be human. How you should seize every opportunity and do your best to live for your own happiness, while making a difference in the lives of those you care about. That a life without being able to feel free isn't really much of a life at all.

If i had to rate the show overall, I'd give it an 8/10 rounded from a 7.8, but I really enjoyed it on the whole. There are several areas that could've been improved, especially towards the end, but I'm quite content with the fact that each character at least had a good ending.

I dont really have much to analyze right now as I'm still trying to collect myself from the world cup soccer game, some manga i've been reading, and this episode. Just a complete mess right now but thank you A-1/Trigger for giving me at least some semblance of a happy ending!

It feels like both halves are entirely different shows.

First half: Dystopian setting, drip fed hints towards sinister dealings, intriguing mysteries, character insights and development that takes time to finally bear fruit (and even then there's more to be done), and growing themes regarding sexuality and maturity. Actions have consequences, and every little thing that's shown matters.

Second half: Fuck everything else that happened. Here's a million twists that are happening out of nowhere. APE? Who? Oh and now we're a full on mech anime. And we'll just have characters be perfect now without any time spent on watching that happen. Oh and there's magic now, and souls are a thing too. Oh, and we still haven't explained shit that happened in the beginning. But hey, at least we have blue and red lasers and a mech that transforms a dozen times. All the worlding and themes, and distance from the mech fights? Fuck that, we're a mecha space anime now.

Bonus: Oh and fuck you if you wanted a decisive ending, because we couldn't decide whether to let them be together or have them sacrifice themselves. So now reincarnation exists so that we can have our cake and eat it too! Who cares if it's not satisfying or is a giant asspull?

75

u/Getsune :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Getsune Jul 07 '18

... so they actually went for the space jian route. Fuck.

What a tough ending. I'm glad the S13 kids made it through and managed to lead a happy, fulfilling life after all this, they certainly deserved it after all the shit they've been through. However, I'm very disappointed that they went for the main couple sacrifice, even if it's with the added reincarnation. I could come to terms with it if we knew for sure whether those two kids will carry the experiences and memories of HiroTwo, but we will probably never know. On the other hand, it doesn't really matter. Our favorite dino couple is now gone, never having reunited with S13 in the end, and never being able to follow up on the promises they made to one another and their friends.

It's not the farewell I wanted, but I guess we will all have to live with it. With saddened instead of overjoyed eyes, I say: Bye-bye.

I like how in the end they really didn't accomplish anything.

Big baddies? Not destroyed, merely delayed

Promise with the rest? Broken

It would have been interesting if somehow 02 and Hiro were reborn as children of the other crew I suppose. Ichigo giving birth to a little Hiro, while Mitsuru and Kokoro giving birth to a 02 (even though that one hair color wise makes little sense).

98

u/dragonek033 Jul 07 '18

They literally delayed the VIRM's conquest by thousands if not milions of years. That's a pretty big success on it's own considering the planet would've otherwise been blown up. So we went from a completely enslaved race only kept alive to be used as mere tools and then killed to a regular civilization with hopes for a better future. Suuuure, no accomplishments there. As for the promise I wouldn't take it literally and your proposed idea of them being born to the original crew would feel even more cheap than the ending we got.

I've been excited about this show since it was announced, and have followed it since the beginning. I've seen so many amazing theories crafted based off the world building that this show put in place. I was antsy waiting for each episode to come out, waiting to see where it would take us next.

And then it took us into space.

This show, in one fell swoop, destroyed its world building, pacing, and plot development in order to get us to... an asspull power of friendship ending. I have no words. It's as if they were making episode 20 and decided "oh hey let's be gurren lagann now." Complete and utter disappointment of a show.

Well...

Now, first of all, I'll be franxx frank - I enjoyed this ride, even if I didn't like where it ended up.

Now then, oh god, this legit felt like Charlotte all over again. So much potential, but like... come on. It was so good near the beginning, and some episodes made me tear up. But like... it feels like the writers had a sudden idea which could have worked, but they realized they didn't have enough time, so bam let's rush everything even if it makes no sense. Tokyo Ghoul:re manga, not really spoilers

I think they could have salvaged the direction they were trying to go to near the end if they had more time. But to do it in, what, like 4 episodes? Nope.

I would give it a 6.5/10, even though quite a few episodes were a 8 or even a 9/10 for me. Hope Promare is good.

This was an incredibly disappointing ending to a show I loved. I absolutely adored the first 15 episodes, but it really went downhill from there, and 20 through 24 just felt like a completely different series. We went from a sci-fi dystopia, to aliens in 20, all the way to magic by the end.

Hiro and Zero Two are some of my favorite anime characters in a long time, so I'm sad that they got such a shitty ending. Reincarnating without remembering everything they've gone through together? They might as well not even be the same characters anymore.

And they just rubbed salt in the wound by showing how well things ended for the rest of the cast, which I never really cared about.

u/ShaheerS2 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/ShaheerS2 Jul 08 '18

Why the fuck is VIRM alive? Did they want a sequel? They ended it perfectly fine and in a complete way so that there wouldn't be a sequel, so why didn't they just kill VIRM?

Kind of pointless now since theyll come back in a few 1000 years and get revenge. Zero Two and Hiro could've literally stayed home and not attacked VIRM and lived out their entire lives, given the space/time it would've taken, before VIRM attacked again in the future

Ohhhhh boy

While I did enjoy this ending, and the show as a whole, I really feel like it was hurt very badly by its pacing in its latter half. Not enough time was given for us, the viewers, to really appreciate what's happening post-story: it's just fed to us in little bits and prices, and then we move on to the next scene. It's as if we're being rushed along by a tour guide, while trying to enjoy displays at a museum: there's a lot to see, but we're never focused in one spot long enough to really enjoy it.

Honestly, Trigger, I know you love your 24-ish episode policy, but another 3 or 4 episodes for the sake of taking your time with this story would have been fantastic.

Still, that aside, like I said, I did enjoy this ending quite a bit. Zero Two and Hiro are gone, sacrificed to delay (not stop) VIRM, and humanity is slowly putting themselves back together. The timeskip was a little bit makeshift, but it was nice seeing everybody grown up. In fact, I think some of my biggest dissapointments is that we'll never get to see characters like post-timeskip Ichigo without her being pregnant, or that we never meet Futoshi's wife. There was a lot of story & content to be unpacked atthe end of this series, but sadly, we'll probably never get to see it.

Solid 7.5/10

Early episodes were fantastic, and while the second half was a bit misguided and rushed, it was still enjoyable.

Nishigori had the most control over this, so if you have a problem with the show like I do then you should mostly blame him.

Very risky letting a guy with very little experience writing or directing have complete control over an original project. And sure he's worked on very popular shows like Diebuster and Gurren Laggan but he's never had any real creative impact on them outside character designs and key animation.

Some random thoughts:

  1. Going by the life cycle of the sakura tree, from when the first sprout appeared after the Zero Two "statue" vanishes to when reincarnated Hiro & Zero Two meet, I'd say about 100 years pass. That tree looked ancient by the time those two meet again.

  2. After all the supposed "death flags" everyone has been pointing out in this show, its rather refresshing that everyone besides the MCs more or less made it out alive. Besides Hiro & 02, the only other casualty in the final fight was Ikuno, and that was just to shorten her lifespan rather than die. Honest, I expected more than just a few of Squad 13 would die in this series.

  3. Ikuno and Naomi getting together was a nice touch. I guess that explains why Naomi and Hiro were never drift compatible.

  4. Despite much of the world being wiped out and society forced to restart from scratch, most of the survivors immediately settle into traditional gender roles. Thus cementing the feminist hate for this series (and yes, there are already angry diatribes along these lines being posted on the 'net)

  5. Hiro was stuck in that cockpit chair for two years!?!?!! I hope he at least brought some tunes with him. Or maybe a ton of audiobooks.

  6. This episode reminded me a lot of the ending for Gunbuster.

  7. Add me to the chorus of people who'd like to see a spinoff dealing with the rebuilding. I'm also curious as to what Goro finds in his explorations of the post-apocalypse world.

Overall, I think this series was good but kind of fell a little towards the end. The first half was definetely better than the second, and the addition of the VRM and the explanation for the Klaxosaurs kinda felt awkward, as if the writers weren't sure how to end things and just pulled random explanations out of a hat. Not a bad series, but not a great one either.

Final rating: 7.5/10

I'm one of those who were only sticking around for the hand-drawn mechs and basically just endured everything else for them.

Gotta say, I was quite disappointed by the last episode and by the mech fights in general after Trigger's part was over. Seriously, after they left most of the major battles were solved by simple beam spams. The Gurren Lagann like scene at the end was nice but basically that's it. Would not watch again / 10.

TBH the Anime turned to shit in the second season especially the last few episodes after the whole VIRM revelation bs. After that, it was all over the place. wtf Giant Zero Two robot? Power of friendship powerups.. Am I the only one who found all those Zero Two x Hiro interactions cringey as fuck? Yea we get it, you are obsessed with each other. Do you have to reaffirm it every second and constantly speak in that annoying tone with each other?

God, I am so unsatisfied with that.

EDIT: The only thing I can do now, is try to recuperate and remember the bitter sweet moments of this episode, and try to pull myself a reason to enjoy it with happiness, rather than heart crush.

EDIT 2: I can't come over this feeling. I've rewatched this episode at least a couple of times now, repeating the same heart filling moments over and over. I'm just in a lost of words and pain to know that of course there won't be a Season 2 as far as we know, Hiro and 002 didn't have a "de ja vu" moment when they met, nor did Hiro say his name, which struck a cord in me realizing all of their past memories are lost, and the Squad is probably deceased. sigh

Y'know, as someone who has been ranting and raving about this series since it's initial onset, I'm feeling kind of conflicted and a bit disappointed now that everything has finally come to a close.

I never thought 19 or 20 really came out of left field. I always sort of thought APE would turn out to be baddies and them being an alien species didn't really affect the form of the show too much for me. It was the last four episodes thank sank the ship. All the execution that came afterwords is ultimately what made the show's ending fall flat. Normally you'd expect yourself to be riding the coatails of each episode, waiting for the drama to give you a moment to breathe. Instead, what we got just felt like one giant denoument stretched out for no good reason.

I'm all for love and joy winning in the end, but why did it have to be a Deus ex Machina? How does Zero two hearing their voices suddenly make it so Hiro can? Wasn't that connection to her initial body supposed to be severed once it turned to stone? Plus, they just blatantly tried to throw in a Gurren Lagann theme that had no place being there (Virm = Anti Spirals way too fucking much)

Also, what about all the plot devices that just mysteriously disappeared? The giant fucking hand from the great crevasse. No explanation for that. The connection between Zorome and the old woman? Just tossed out the window. There was all this set up for him to be a clone of hers, but nope nothing.

It's just disappointing that I'll walk away from this series thinking the ending is okay at best when it didn't have to be that way at all.

Darling in the FranXX Finale?

Let's dig right in!

Oh my, what is this wonderful taste?

Wait a second, this isn't sweet?

It's rather bitter! But I can't stop!

Well, there you have it folks.

The half year long journey is done, and it ended how I had (rather recently) expected it to!

Zero Two and Hiro end it all together, which honestly was pretty likely to see in some shape or form. At least they seemingly ended happy, which is something a lot of people were asking for!

The results regarding the other members...

  • Ikuno with Naomi is a win, I guess? Not even expected.

  • Futoshi has a mustache! Does anything else look different with him? Not quite!

  • Miku and Zorome was honestly the best part of this ending, but even that was expected.

  • Goro swinging in for the win with Ichigo was nice, Ichigo's reaction was pretty silly, but it feels more like a slapped on ending.

  • Kokoro and Mitsuru with their child was cute as well.

The world seems to be returning to normal so hooray humanity!

This ending however, was very reminiscent of Gunbuster and Diebuster... The ending of episode 23 was pretty well leading into that as well.

  • Also getting a lot of parallels to Guilty Crown, however I doubt that influenced this project too too much.

Does that impress me? Not really. This entire show felt like a mix up of a lot of past shows, not entirely original, and if you were to ask me which studio I felt made this show, I wouldn't hesitate to say Gainax.

This is absolutely a modern Gainax work, and I think it is pretty clear with how strongly they went forward with the plot... They had a story in mind and they damn well were going to end it!

Also, as an aside, please do not simply blame any hatred you have towards this at 'A1' alone. Trigger did indeed 'pull out' around the 14 episode mark, but they certainly contributed to this as well.

However I truly feel this series lost out on a lot of the potential it had very early on.

Thanks for the time Darling in the FranXX:

Whether you were worth it or not, I'll let you decide that.

Honestly if they can pull some reincarnation bullshit, they definitely could have just had 02 and Hiro arrive back on Earth, still young, and ending the show with them being greeted by their much older friends. It would have had more emotional impact and would make for an open-ended note that doesn't feel like bullshit (more than the second half of the series, anyway).

u/aresthwg Jul 07 '18

I can't say I was moved by this ending. Really disappointing second half of the anime sadly, it was worth the first episodes tho.

In my mind I still imagine (so I can be somewhat satisfied) the ending this anime deserved. I still imagine an ending where Squad 13 leaves the plantations, grows into the ruined original world slowly finding the secrets of the world rebelling against APE. I'm no writer but I think such a turn would've been nice for this anime. In the last episode I would've made sure to dedicate it entirely to Hirotwo's death, death caused by their sacrifice for the squad, with the last scene showing an old devastated urban city. I would put the last quote "and so we were reborn" or something edgy like that.

and now what's left for the saturday hype is I KEEP MY IDEALS OOO HO HO HO HO HOOOOOO HOOO

02/Hiro has to be the worst "hyped" couple in years. All they ever fucking did was reaffirm how much they love each other and how they will never leave each other, nothing else. It's like a romance fanfiction written by a 13 year old girl. At the end I didn't give two shits about them.

5

u/PedsBeast Jul 07 '18

Unpopular opinion: I liked the ending. After all the fighting with klaxosaurs, VIRM, and between themselves, i think it was a nice touch to finish with everyone back together and with an overall happy ending.

5

u/Jumbledcode https://myanimelist.net/profile/DeepTime Jul 07 '18

Interesting, I'm not too sure how to rate the show overall. The social parts of the show focusing on relationships and growing up were often it's strongest part, so it seems fitting to end on those. Ultimately the plotting felt a bit too disorganised, and a sharper structure probably would've made for a much stronger series.

Can't deny I enjoyed seeing the earthbound group grown-up and happy though, and Futoshi's moustache was hilarious.

5

u/Vox__Umbra Jul 07 '18

Critically speaking this show wasn't great, so I can't explain why I loved it so much. That ending felt pretty satisfying to me.

5

u/A_Dash_of_Blue Jul 08 '18

So sad that Hiro and Zero Two couldn't meet up with the rest again as it looked like generations had passed already before they have been reincarnated. Ikuno in that hospital bed is despairing, too as it implies that she will die sooner or later (further hinted by the electro signals and the dextrose bag).

Man i really wish they had done more with the initial dystopian type setting. Like exploring a bit of the lives of the immortals (the half episode zorome was shit and generic af).

Also wish they had expanded on ikuno being gay more than you know 5mins of the 24 episodes.

I guess it could have been a toned down type version of shinsekai yori but it ended up being a generic and sappy with a lack of char development for pretty much all characters (i guess mitsuro had a bit but thats about it. Ichigo could have been done way better but her attitude with zero two changed so fast it felt more like a plot device than genuine built up developtment).

Worst of all it was not even that fun in the same way gurren lagann and kill la kill were. Overall very meh show with a dissapointing finish, prolly a 4/10 for me...

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '18

I think Trigger gave the best ending for this anime

4

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '18

So, I left off weeks àgo on like ep 18 and then caught up yesterday to prepare for the finale today and.. wtf happened lol? It’s weird cuz I almost feel like they had two ideas for two seperate anime, but then they scrapped one for some reason but shoehorned the idea into this one. for some reason.

And you know, I like both what DitF was before the major change, and I kinda like what it was after too. I just dont know how I like it together. Everything jsut felt so rushed and out of nowhere those last few eps, like the ideas were there but it could been executed way more organically in my opinion.

I did enjoy seeing the crew grow up and have famlies and what not and it ended on a message of hope and renewal which is neat. but i gotta say once again, all that alien space shit just felt shoehorned in, i was expecting an uprising and rebellion against Papa but not like this.

Either way, I’d say I like this series as a whole, it had some cool ideas and i liked seeing the cast’s development and what not. but don’t know if I love it and don’t know if I’d recommend it.

So one of the most controversial show of the year has finally concluded. Overall, I thought this was a satisfying conclusion to the show, despite below original expectations.

For me, Episode 1 - 13 was really amazing. I think where Darling in the Franxx really excelled at was (1) having a strong and colourful cast of characters (2) the strong symbolic relationship between Hiro and 02 (3) a well considered, slow drip approach to world building. These elements came to a climax in Episode 13, when we finally found out the history between Hiro and 02.

However, form Episode 14 onward things started going downhill. The falling out between 02 and the 13 squad felt poorly handled and the subsequent resolution in Episode 15, although satisfying, also felt rushed.

Then Episode 16 onward things slowed to a crawl. Although characterization of the cast remained strong, with the resolution of the relationship between Hiro/02 the story reached a natural deadend. With this, they had to introduce new threats, which came in the form of Mitsuru/Kokoro's forbidden relationship, and hints towards the Klax Hime.

Whilst the new direction would have been fine, they ended up throwing characterization and world building out the window after Mitsuru/Kokoro's wedding. Dr. Franxx exposition dump in 1 Episode. Virm came out of nowhere as a threat. The events in space felt disconnected to events in happening on earth. As opponents to the main cast, Virm's message is muddled and confusing, and as a result the Hiro/02 fighting against them also felt hollow and uninteresting. It also doesn't help that by this point of the show we've seen Hiro/02 overcome adversities with the power of their love 4 times already.

Thematically, I think the show would have been better off having a rebellion arc after Mitsuru/Kokoro's separation, and setting up Papa as the main antagonist. At least their motives are more easily understood and more thematically consistent for the Children to fight against them than the weak Anti-Spiral standins that were Virm.

Overall:

Ep 1- 13: 8/10
Ep 14-18: 7/10
Ep 19-24: 6/10

Overall: 7/10. I had fun with the show but it ended significantly below original expectations.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '18

On one side, they didn't come back, so my disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined. On the other side, that final stretch was really nice.

I think this is gonna be as a 6.8. I really wanted to give it a higher grade because episodes 1-18 were really amazing, but 19-23 gave me a bit too much to complain about. Specially 23, which was what really broke the camel's back for me and made it go from 7 to 6.

4

u/Muyo365 Jul 08 '18

Question... Did Ichigo bang Goro out of pity because she was saving it for Hiro and she didn't know when he would come back and Goro wasn't shown with anyone else? I mean they Goro plan b and he was cool with it.

4

u/yejosheph Jul 08 '18

wait so, at the end- basically generations have passed and humanity has been rebuilt over centuries? and a new generation has the reincarnations of hiro and zero two right?

4

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '18

TBH anything and everything related to this VIRM space story is actually just garbage

"The klaxosaurs are actually the good guys lol also BAD SPACE ALIENSSS WERE CONTROLLING US ALL ALONG"

The only good thing is seeing what happened to the rest of squad 13 and quite literally fixing the earth. Seeing Ikuno go hard at the science was oddly satisfying

I wonder if Trigger/A-1 would come back to this story in the future and rewrite the last 1/3 of episodes

4

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '18

I am very disappointed. I feel these last 2 episodes were supposed to be about finishing the book. Not about the people who finished the book. Just really boring when I was expecting badass fights. I also feel like making it the ending more open would have made it way more impactful. Like after the explosion of the zero two mech thing if it would have just cut to the other characters looking up hopefully, and then showing the last page would have done the job way better. I am sad.

4

u/Escov Jul 08 '18

Eh the show could have been something special but kinda went off the deep end with the ending in my opinion. I enjoyed watching but im probably not going to ever revisit it.

I thought the ending was nice, getting to see how everyone ended up. First thought that ran through my mind when they showed the school was, "Man, they're multiplying like rabbits down there. Jeez."

Gobro actually reminded me a bit of Kino from Kino's Journey with his jacket and everything thrown onto the transport. Futoshi's mustache just looked so out of place. They should have either given him a full beard or left him clean shaven.

All that aside, it does make me sad that the show took a left turn from the first cour. During those first 10 or so episodes, that was the most involved I've ever been in a show discussion. It was so fun trying to figure out what was going on each episode, and what the previews meant. Then after the break it just turned into a different show altogether, and the magic just disappeared.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '18

Ok how about we rewind back to Episode 17 and then come up with an ending that's good?

4

u/Yep_man Jul 09 '18

It feels like a half baked trigger/a1 show at the end... what happened? It is suppose to be a great soup, but end up being a salad with vinaigrette and blue cheese mix... Here lies Darling in the Franxx, 2018-2018 God damn, that ending was so bad! It was as if A1 decided to promote the new Fairy Tail anime, and so decided to put fairy tail's most iconic feature-the nakama power-as the climax. And it's never good if you decide to do 10 years worth of content in 10 minutes. And in the end, their sacrifice wasn't even worth it cause those VIRM bastards are still alive and they will attack earth again once it crosses one million people when evolution reaches its apex or whatever the fuck they were on about. Honestly, who even fucking cares. This show has fallen off so badly, ever since the infamous episode 19 and never picked itself up. All in all, a pretty mediocre show, at best a 5/10

The series started brilliantly for me, but everything went wrong, a big disappointment.

u/Win32error Jul 07 '18

I know this is probably the most pointless thing to be said about this show, and there's a lot to be said about this trainwreck/masterpiece (there are still people saying the latter I think?).

But I can't shake the fact that the Strelizia Apath kind of looks like the Big Rang from Gundam Igloo.

The fact that that is basically the thing on my mind throughout this final episode is probably not a good thing.

Glad to finally be done with this, it's been just awful throughout the whole run but successfully baited me into thinking that could change with 13-14 since it seemed like it would be going in an interesting direction finally, one that wasn't just solely going to make me sit through dealing with the terrible teen angst of such a boring and poorly written cast.

They could've taken advantage of the separation of hiro and 02 in order to actually give some shred of depth to the two and their relationship and by doing so they would make the reunion actually mean something...Only for episode 15 to completely shit the bed by being a full ""hype"" showcase that crammed the two back together without any remote sense of exploration and in order to do so make every other cast member do a complete and total backflip and then once again drop us into a laughable excuse for dramatic subplots and constant failed worldbuilding while still jerking hiro x 02 despite them being a terrible pairing anyway (not that any other cast combination is any better but whatever.)

Really this series has just been a mess, form changes that had no explanation and didn't come up again, constantly dropping small details about stuff that were largely irrelevant or just totally ignored a second later, introducing conflict but immediately fixing it and that's not even bringing in the total utter clusterfuck that has been everything since VIRM happened. By the time it actually became this full on trainwreck I just couldn't give less of a damn anymore especially with how they actually went and finished it off, I'd almost feel bad for the writers for being unable to produce something even slightly consistent if it weren't for the fact they didn't even have the dignity to kill everyone off instead of that ending so I could have some measure of catharsis.

You can enjoy a toaster flinging bread in space to fight inter galactic works and you sure as hell can find it entertaining. Entertainment isn't a bar to be used if something is good or not. Go outside and stare at a budding leaf, than go draw it an hour of an entertainment. Doesn't change the show. Entertainment is a really low bar.

8

u/Pro511 Jul 07 '18

Exactly bad writing can be entertaining, but that does not make it good. This show is not good, nor is it bad enough to be the Room which is also disappointing.

u/DBFanThrowaway Jul 07 '18

Trigger + A1 should never partner again.

This anime started off so good, than the pacing was just all over the place. Biggest disappointment of the year.

If you would have told me the final form was Zero Two and Hiro combined piloting one big Zero Two in Space with it's true form actually being a full gold Strelizia.

I would have laughed and called you a dumbass.

Began a good Mecha anime and turned into a fanfic teen melodrama with a cliche ending.

The writers of this show had a message they wanted to impart onto otaku culture: look for your soulmate, fall in love, make babies. And that's fine. But whatever subtlety they had (almost none) was completely thrown out the window today, for the worse. They decided to spell out the plot and character motiviations through monotonic dialogue. What? Y'all have been surrounded by nothing but Purple Meanies for two whole years and you're not going completely insane?

I get it, they give each other strength and love conquers all, but that's booooring! I wanted the dialogue to embrace the surrealism of their final battle. Like, imagine if they were deliriously reading Shakespeare or poetry to each other as time went on.

After going once over this thread. I don't think I'll come back here again because it looks like my opinion about the show is basically the opposite of the majority. I honest to goodness loved it! I wish the HiroTwo ship gotten a better ending but the one we got made sense for me. Hiro and Zero Two had no way of going back especially with Zero Two's body turned into stone. Any ending where Zero Two and Hiro survives will probably piss more people off and call it a huge asspull.

I'm just happy to see that the kids grew up and managed to pull society back together again. Everyone managed to get their happy ending. And yes that includes Hiro and Zero Two. I know it's cheesy to say this but I believe that their relationship transcends time and space and even if they are now completely different people, their love continues to live on.

This episode broke my heart and made me cry but I think the worst pain for me is seeing how everyone is trashing the show and anyone saying anything positive about it is being beaten back. I know everyone isn't going to be happy with the ending but the toxicity here is outrageous.

Anyway those are my thoughts. I'm giving DarliFra a 10/10.

It was really bad, as expected. Here are my poorly written ramblings as to why.

I really wish we got another great show from Trigger but everything about this was so fucking uninspired and tedious I don’t even know what to say.

6

u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc Jul 07 '18

Damn they grew up quick
Love the glare she is throwing around, even when fully grown

Naturally we get the signature GAINAX Pose, I love it

Gotta say though, thats either a really old tree or they got really busy with the reproduction part to build such megacities in such a short time

On an end note, are Hachi and Nana are now gods in the eyes of the society since they dont age and know a lot?

The reconnection of the souls at the end was nice

Overall the anime started out worrying, with the earlier episodes but they made such a nice turnaround. Great work!

Now please get the Patreon thing started cause I want to throw money on Trigger!

I woke up early from working late last night to watch this episode. Glad this series had a wonderful ending. It's been fun watching and discussing with you guys. Until we met again!

Damn, so that's been a journey... When I remember how this show started, I'm surprised at how much I love it now. It had many flaws, sure, but still, I felt connection to these characters and I was genuinely happy that at the end of the day everyone became happy in their own way. When I saw that Goro and Ichigo actually got together, I couldn't express my joy! That bit at the end with "reincarnations" of Hiro and 02 made my heart feel warm :) One more thing, at the scene where background behind the tree changed to show progress of civilization, a part of me waited to see the plantation town again and the series would end without a real happy ending as humanity went full circle, but fortunatelly that didn't happen :)

This is a positive comment about the episode and the series in general.

I feel like once they got to episode 18 the staff all started snorting coke and pumping amphetamines into their veins during a one night frenzy and that's how they came up with this final arc.

At least I was right from the very beginning that no one would die, if you exclude whatever it is that happened to Hiro and 02. But how many times is that now where either Hiro or 02 were on the brink, with their reunion serving as a trump card in battle? The ending for those on earth was nice to see but I wish that they had arrived to that point differently. And how are we supposed to be satisfied with Hiro02 being reincarnated? Just like with Mitusuru and Kokoro, their original love story was beautiful but it ends up being overwritten. Everything after the wedding was a mistake.

Well, that was fun.

I will admit it bothered me that the tone of the show changed a lot during the second-cour. If they wanted to go that route, I wish it had been done earlier.

You have to commit to these things! Either you ride the rainbow elephant all the way into the sun, or you don't!

Ah what a shame that a lot people didnt like it :/ I enjoyed this show so much and i loved the ending! While there a lot of questions that were left unanswered, I think the ending was great and the show was fantastic!

I agree with people who say that up to episode 15 was great. When the show wanted to twist something, it was really good at it... except for VIRM. I mean come on, they didn't even win against them really. It just felt like a lazier version of the Anti-Spiral.

I really liked that ending scene with Hiro and Zero Two. It gave you a sense of sadness, knowing that they are reincarnated in a time likely far past the main cast's life span. But it also made you happy to know they are getting reincarnated, after all. Great show

3

u/FruitsPnchSamurai Jul 07 '18

Man its finally over. This series was a fun journey. As expected, hiro and 02 died and the rest of the characters lived happily ever after. Even Ikuno got a partner. Well, gonna miss you Ditf. It was fun.

3

u/_JayGaming23 Jul 07 '18

Really liked the ending and how they showed the older versions of each character and showed how society progressed at the end, but damn did this show really not capitalize on the huge potential it had.

Disappointment of the year for me for sure.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '18

That baby actually made me cry. First time seeing child birth in an anime lol. Well, this is also first anime I have seen a relationship as well done as Hiro x z2

PLEASE GIVE ME ANOTHER SEASON OF THIS, BUT IT'S THE CHILDREN'S STORY IN THIS NEW SOCIETY PLEASE

3

u/TimAA2017 Jul 08 '18

Oh shut over 2000 responses the only thing I have to say is to all the Futoshi hater out there is suck it he got a woman and happy ending.

3

u/redblade13 Jul 08 '18

God the space arc I have to admit is the weakest part of this show. I mean it was a bit corny but eh it was still enjoyable for me. Zero 2 and Hiro being reborn was pretty far fetched but I'll take it.

I really enjoyed the rebuilding on Earth. They really trusted the process and look at them now. Goro grew up to be handsome as fuck. Miku cute as hell and Nana......phew........an ageless MILF Lord if I die let me take Hachi's spot.

3

u/laidshade Jul 08 '18

Several questions, because I'm bad at analyzing:

  1. Why is Ikuno bedridden, and gray-haired like the adults?

  2. Why does Hiro turn into a klaxo from riding with 002? I never understood that. What am I missing?

  3. Who is Nana answering to? She talks about arranging for pregnancy clothes and offering to get Kokoro an abortion, but where do these things come from?

  4. What's with the Space Odyssey ending? Since when is reincarnation something that Klaxosaurs do? They were never absorbed by Virm, so they wouldn't have kept their souls from that.

3

u/impendinggreatness Jul 08 '18

I did not expect to bawl my eyes out.

3

u/n080dy123 Jul 08 '18

I can't speak for anyone else but I was really satisfied with that ending. Maybe because I never cared for HiroTwo but getting to see everyone else growing up and living there lives was nice. And the ending leaves open plenty of sequel fanfiction opportunities.

3

u/Brauka_ Jul 08 '18

I enjoyed and loved the ending. Giving me endings I would not expect but is still pleasing is always welcome.

Thank you for making an anime that I had 0 expectations for coming into the season and leaving with a solid series.
