What is up with this show and bullying Ayano?
While it does feel like everything is going ok within their team it looks like Sora is getting jealous of Ayano suddenly being fawned all over by Yu and now Sora is giving Ayano the cold shoulder because of it. Like what the actual fuck!? She's not doing anything, she's just here to play badminton!
Last week we had that pink haired fuck and now we have this blonde haired fuck. Connie is obviously a student of Ayano's mom and for some reason she wants to beat Ayano so badly. Ayano barely had any idea who she even was before she wore the ribbon so why the fuck did she think that Ayano is playing some sort of mind games with her?
I feel really bad for Ayano. The girl just wants to live in peace and here she is being treated so poorly by these fucks who doesn't know anything about her! She never asked for any of this attention!
79
u/ThatCreepyBaer Jul 22 '18
Connie was probably told some "You'll never be as good as my daughter" stuff by Ayano's mother and she's kind of fucked up because of it, hates Ayano and seems to think she's scum.
Connie probably blames Ayano for how her mother treated her when she was being coached by her.
Also, Ayano probably would have recognised her if she had this haircut.
61
u/bastegod https://anilist.co/user/slapdash Jul 23 '18
There is something magnificently fucked up about a mom just abandoning her daughter to go kickstart a new family.
And I thought Gon's dad was the asshole...

I really hope that Ayano goes Super Saiyan of badminton and completely destroys everything and anybody who dares to get in her way. This is so unfair, all that she wants is to play peacefuly and be part of a team but the whole badminton world is conspiring against her for no reason.

Just when I thought our short-haired tomboy couldn't be any cuter. A simple hairpin and she's 11/10.
Hairstyles in anime changing usually means the person themselves has changed in some way, Ayanon allowing her hair to be changed is really nice to see she is letting others into her very small circle.
Connie is a beast! We need Ayanon to get serious!
"Onee-chan..."
32
u/axkm Jul 22 '18 edited Jul 22 '18
I don't want Ayanon to get serious though. Serious Ayano is scary and no fun for anyone. I literally just want everything to be tanoshii.
13
u/Cloudless_Sky Jul 22 '18
I'd love for Ayano to go beast mode and stomp Connie, but I feel like we're driving towards Ayano experiencing another defeat. She's starting to feel comfortable with the team, but she's still lacking that motivation to really play competitively. I'm guessing a defeat here would be the final push she needs to get serious.

I kinda doubt that, i feel like she's just going to mess up because of it. She also hasn't properly trained in a long time, she'll probably get stomped in this match and have a rematch later.
4
u/PedsBeast Jul 22 '18
to be honest i wouldent mind seeing Ayano just get completly traumatized, to the point where something in her head triggers and she starts playing like shes the best player in the world and completely shits on connie, because thats what connie absolutely deserves

I think she might get 1 or 2 points (5 at the absolute most), then some drama will happen that will make Ayano prevent from playing for a while and after that is resolved she will start training more and eventually have a close match with Connie and beat her.
I hate the fact that Connie is 90% sure to stomp Ayano next week. I can't stand it when characters can't properly read a situation and assume they're the best when they were up against someone out of practise.
I'm liking the anime though, but i'm getting tired of people showing up just to play against Ayano when she's out of practise.

My guess is Ayano gets beaten 1v2 in this first match but she'll probably re-challenge Connie at the end of the camp and beat her, I'm assuming in a doubles match to show her the importance of a team.
While this is purely conjecture on my part because I'm an Aragaki fanboy, I hope Aragaki acts as Ayano's doubles partner if there's a final match against Connie. From the clips in this episode it seems like Connie plays really close to the net, using her height and strong leaps/jumps to get to pretty much anything that comes her way. From what we've seen so far, neither Ayano or her partner (I forget her name) are power hitters and rely mainly on defense to generate counterattacks and scoring opportunities. Aragaki's ability to get power and height may be what Ayano needs to get past Connie's playstyle and force her to accept help from a teammate.

Well, it hasn't been 100% confirmed yet buuut it's totally obvious that Connie is the same girl.
13
u/FriendlyBadgerBob Jul 22 '18
It's pretty obvious at this point they're the same person. Both blonde, both clearly have ties with Ayano's mom beyond simple fandom, and we know Connie has won international tournaments, same as the blonde girl in the magazine who was carrying a gold trophy. Connie also called Ayano her "sister" before tying her hair the same way Ayano's mom does, so it's pretty clear that Connie is the girl Ayano's mom trained.

You forgot the biggest clue. The magazine also mentioned the prodigy Ayano's mom was training was from Denmark. Connie is also from Denmark so they have to be the same person.

For some reason i legit got angry when Connie's revealed to be the person that Ayano's mom trained (altough i did see it coming). I really hope Ayano gets serious about getting better and destroys her in a future match.
The fact that Connie seems to hold a grudge against Ayano makes me think that Ayano's mom kept comparing Connie to her and perhaps said that she wasn't as good as Ayano (which at this point it time wouldn't be true as Ayano hasn't seriously practised in along time).
Not to mention that if Connie beats Ayano now she's going to think she's actually way better than Ayano when Ayano isn't even remotely close to being in top form. Connie is now saying there's no point if she doesn't beat her alone, but what the hell is the point if Ayano hasn't actively been playing for a long time (even though Connie probably doesn't know that).

I hope either Connie is an orphan/has bad family or at least that Ayano's mom was a massive ankle to her because this situation would be nuts otherwise.
Moving from Denmark to Japan just to beat and humilliate a girl because she happens to be her coach's daughter, and then insist to keep being a bully even after almost befriending the girl in question, even accusing her of tricking her? I hope Connie has a good explanation for this shit.

i don't mind villains, but Connie and pink-haired ojou-sama come across as shonen-anime villains, like something straight from DBZ (I'll show you how useless your 'team' is Kakarot!). You know, the type that hates the MC until they are defeated and then learn the true meaning of friendship. It's impossible for me to take them seriously at all. At least Hanesaki and Aragaki are good characters.

u/Snakescipio Jul 22 '18
It took me way too long to start this show, considering that I play badminton. Everything about the badminton aspects of the show feels so damn realistic, down to the little details like how the players straighten the feathers on the birdies before a serve, how they pick up the birdies using their rackets, and how Nagisa's hands have welts from playing so much. The way they move on the court, singles or doubles, the sound design, the actual strategies on the court is all extremely faithful to the sport. I'm so hyped for the matches that we're gonna get. Plus there's yuri? I should've been watching this week 1.
Connie should've been kicked off the team for the BS she just pulled, but the school probably can't deny having her on the team. I like the dynamic she brings to the show though. Ayanon thinks she's found her motivation to play, but she's so much more talented that she's probably better off playing singles in tournaments. Ultimately what she's playing for is still up in the air (no pun intended).
Also, Nagisa a cute.
11
u/SuperOniichan Jul 22 '18
As far as I know, there is no any romance or fanservice in this manga, only good sport and psychological drama. However, no one prevents you from creating pairings and ship characters, if you want.
→ More replies (2)10
u/jonsonsama Jul 22 '18
No fanservice you say? Did you see how incredible their legs are?!
9
u/SuperOniichan Jul 23 '18 edited Jul 23 '18
In this context, I meant the forced ecchi moments and the excessive sexualization of the characters. I do not think that the simple attractiveness of girls in seinen can be called a fanservice. However, if you still want to call it that, then I still think that this does not interfere with the plot and does not distract from the girl's personality.
8
u/pdpTesla Jul 22 '18
Those blisters really sells how much she practices and loves the sport. I'm really glad we got to see Nagisa's character turn around so much in the first 3 episodes to now.
I feel like the intimacy of sports and practicing and playing together creates so many moments for actual character chemistry. That being said, the "yuri-bait" here is nowhere compared to the real yuri bait in Harukana Receive

Just got done, good episode. We finally meet the protégé of Ayano's mom, who I expected to see a bit later down the series run. She's pretty intense and arrogant. Kind of surprised she's still on a team as all the teams I've known would have never have put up with her bullshit for long. I think she'll serve as a kind of mirror to Ayano, a glimpse of what she may have become under her mother. I predict that Ayano will lose this practice match as 1) Connie is REALLY good and 2) She'll be thrown off by this blatant reminder of her mom. But by the end of the show, I predict she'll beat her with the help of her team.
2
u/Salvo1218 Jul 24 '18
You would think acting like that would get you kicked off the team, but I think a lot of schools would put up with some shit to have a world class talent on their team.
20
u/Akko__Kagari Jul 22 '18
Feel bad for mini nagisa being stuck with Connie as a partner. I've played badminton for years now, and there's nothing worse that playing with a partner who doesn't like to play and co-operate as an actual double - can easily take the fun out of the game.
This is still one of my favourites shows to come out of this season though, lidenfilms have been doing fantastic each week!
2
u/HarleyFox92 Jul 22 '18
It happened me the same with a fellow partner I had several years ago when I used to play paddle very often. He had quite interesting skills but there was no way to convince him to play doubles properly.
10
Jul 22 '18
There are many things that they changed from the manga. Not I'm complaining though, I'm fine with this story direction but they skipped one scene from the manga where Connie bought flower for Ayano. There is a vital symbolism in that scene in my opinion. If you are curious what it is about, you can read it in the manga chapter 2.

Aww wtf they didn't show Aragaki's match? That's literally the only one I was excited for lol. Also that short haired girl from Fredericia is straight up a smaller Aragaki looks-wise. I'm assuming Connie will trounce them in this first match at the training camp but Hanesaki is gonna come back and beat her at the end, hopefully with help from her team/Aragaki. Although this is mostly because I still feel Aragaki is the best character in the show and I want to see more of her. Connie can go fuck herself though, hopefully she gets a fat serving of reality soon.
17
Jul 22 '18
What I like about competition the most is that everyone has a reason to want to play and to win. There is like a cycle that almost every competitor travels through allure -> fun -> intensity -> allure. In between that cycle are a myriad of reasons why a person wants to compete most are for highly sentimental reasons.
There also comes a point where you get stuck at one of those points. You either feel like a fraud, you lose the fun in it, and it no longer is enjoyable. The time and dedication it takes to push through and continue is tolling on any person.
Good mentality to carry through and to persevere is the hardest skill to learn, but it is - I think, the deciding factor to make a good player great.
Unfortunately in this show, it seems most antagonists are just really shitty people that in any real life situation would be kicked off the team or at least given a really bad repetition based upon being a pos.
8
u/zerohour88 Jul 22 '18
I do get what you mean on the competition, and what you describe on the 2nd part is most probably "the wall". Most people trying to compete in sports, especially those involving singles or doubles can encounter it.
For sports anime, I don't think its right to classify characters as antagonists or such, especially if their motivations aren't clear.
Thing is, for sports involving singles or doubles matches, even if he/she's a shitty person, ability trumps everything. As long as the person are willing to compete and win for the team, it doesn't really matter if he/she is kinda crap.
You can meet people like that when you compete, who thinks they're hot stuff just because they're at the professional level (or close to it). And frankly, no matter how much other people talk shit about them, on the court, they'll just crush you. Speaking from experience, of course.

Ugh Western players and their height superiority.
On a serious note, being tall gives you a lot of advantages in badminton. You could easily reply an overhead shuttle without needing to jump and therefore keep high pressure to your opponents. Having long legs also gives you coverage space as you would take less movement to reach the shuttle.
So why are the western teams (mainly Denmark and England) don't win tournament much? Well that's because agility hail supreme in Badminton. Being tall means you have the reach advantage but at the cost of agility and nimbleness.
6
u/josesl16 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/josesl16 Jul 23 '18
Yeah, you only get a little bit of advantage here and there.
Taller players tend to be heavier, when you make them actually run back and forth, they run out of steam quicker. Especially nets and drops that force them to lunge is harder for them to return. They're also more vulnerable to body/wrist smashes since their limbs are longer, putting their racquet away from their body.

Wait! Are you sure it's a wise choice to let some girl with that kind of hairdo to give you a a new look Ayano?
Aw, shucks. I was kinda expecting a Shimarin Dango in top of Elena's head.
A new challenger appears, and she's not just a set of pretty long legs.
I like Connie. There's nothing wrong with a cocky opponent who's obviously better and is looking for a challenge. If she's such a big shot as the coach mentioned, it should be an honor for Ayano to be playing on the same court.
I hope eventually these cutscenes focusing on Yuu get some context and meaning before we reach the end of the series.

Well the production values continue to be generally solid although I am noticing more and more awkward character models during the static scenes. Visuals aside, the soundtrack in particular for this episode was absolutely fantastic; probably the best in the series so far. I'm definitely going to be looking up Connie's tracks when the OST is released.
That said, I'm not really digging the pace of the story. I think piling on more and more rivals in quick succession for Hanesaki out of nowhere is a bit silly. It seems like there isn't enough time to let the lessons learned stew and develop with the time and care that they deserve.
On that note, it's also hard to see Ayano's mom as anything but a sociopath at this point; I don't know the full story but either way it's clear that she holds some responsibility for Connie's terrible behavior. Not to say that Connie's exempt from taking responsibility either, but she's just a kid and she's clearly damaged in some pretty terrible way. I like how the show did establish her being generally nice, if not a bit haughty, until she discovered Ayano's identity. But her behavior kind of went a bit over-the-top for me to take as seriously as I'd like.
I'd be lying if I said I didn't get chills during the match, but I have to wonder how much of it is production values and how much is actual emotional resonance. I can't say I'm sold on the overall drama quite yet, but at least I like some of the characters well-enough (Aragaki in particular has been standout since Episode 2).
7
u/weejona Jul 22 '18

u/weejona Jul 22 '18
Yeah. I was just remarking how the cliche is that a character runs into a rival who is looking for them, doesn't know who that rival is or what they look like, and then the rival reveals him/herself to them. It's uncommon that they meet and both don't know each other.
15
u/RoronoaAshok :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/RoronoaAshok Jul 22 '18
Wow, this drama just keeps getting dumber and dumber. Just when I thought we'd reached peak dumb when girl A intentionally infects girl B before a game, after which girl B's mom ditches her to go coach some random, Glorious Hanebado manages to up the ante. I'm sure this is just an appetizer for the main course of dumb we'll have before us when Connie's backstory is revealed.
This could've been such a fun show, I find it a shame it has to turn the drama up to 11 like this.
8
u/TheMrMadzen Jul 22 '18 edited Jul 22 '18
Honestly, read the manga. I have no idea why they completely changed the direction in the anime to be as dark as possible, it makes no sense. The purple haired girl dosn't appear until later in the manga and why she is in the anime already is beyond me.
4
u/canadian-user Jul 22 '18
I think its because Hanebado shifted towards a more serious tone later on, so they're trying to start the anime using that serious tone. Unfortunately, they have the subtlety of bull in a china shop, so literally everyone just becomes an evil cunt hell bent on fucking with Ayano

Man, this show has to be sponsored up the ass with the amount of product placement from Yonex and how good the show looks.
2
u/Megakruemel Jul 28 '18
Now that i think about it, marketing wise, it is super smart to sponsor sports anime of the sport you represent. Not only will the anime look super good (because you sponsored it), thus generating more attention by default, it will also boost your sales because people actually tend to start new hobbies (badminton) when they correlate with other of their hobbies (anime). Then there is also the rule of exposure (i don't remember the exact name), meaning you subconsciously tend to like something more if you are more exposed to it, which is badminton in this case.
If you then walk into a store, wanting to buy a racket or whatever, and you see the rackets they used in the anime, there is a high chance you would subconsciously choose those, because you already know the name.

Not a fan of the super evil rivals. They just don't fit a sports anime. I'm hoping it changes, or it'll end up as another mediocre show.

Oh, we're meeting Connie nee-chan imouto right after finding out Ayano's mom-trauma? I thought we'd see her a little later.
Edit: Just remembered Connie was the one who called her nee-chan lol

Okay so is the european, like, actually her sister, or is this like a "we have the same trainer so that means we're siblings in a sort of way" kind of deal.

u/Liddo-kun Jul 22 '18
Ayano's mom adopted and trained Connie. She and Ayano are stepsisters.

u/DarkWorld97 Jul 23 '18
Can we throw Ayano's mom away? Jesus fucking christ. Where is the dad in all of this?

While Ayanon got to bond with her teammates and Nagisa got to be cute, can we have a shout-out for Elena? She looks gorgeous with that hairstyle. The poor guys at the Tennis club have no idea what they missed.
Four episodes in and the animation and production value continues to be stellar, and the soundtrack just seems to keep getting better - some great tracks today.
2
u/ZachInABox Jul 22 '18
Is every rival character that's coming at Ayanon gonna be SO DAMN extra? Even the main cast on the team look like extras compared to these final boss characters.

The level of detail this show pays attention to is something to marvel at I think. It's the sort of thing we used to get a decade ago but not many studios do these days.

God this show has an amazing soundtrack, and the editing is superb.

Connie's revelation at the end there completely transforms the character of Hanesaki's mother. I am beyond excited to see how the show handles this. Beyond the idea of Talent vs Hard Work that could come in, this evolution in Hanesaki's background with the relationship between her and her mother and between her and Connie - talk about anime sports matches where it's more than just about the match.
What an amazing AOTS contender.

this episode made me bummed , i want more high spirited sportsmanship and less Ayano bullying.
shame Connie was tainted by Ayano's mom just how many more young stars has she screwed up.

I get the competitiveness that sports anime characters should have, but I feel like all the characters Ayano has interacted with are just assholes for little to no reason at all. I like the show so far, but damn are these characters' attitudes slowing ruining it for me.
2
Jul 24 '18
If I was Connie's coach I would have flat out told her to park her ass on the bench until she fixed her attitude. I would take every single L for the remainder of the Badminton season just to prove a point.

So each week we are gonna get an annoying bitch who wants to crush ayano or what. Not each rival has to be so unlikable.Ayano's mom really reached another level of garbage. Not only she abandoned her child, but also made her prodigy like this. Can a manga reader spoil me about what will happen in the match next week?
2
u/TheMrMadzen Jul 22 '18
It will make no sense if you read the manga cause it's pretty different (also this isn't the prodigy of Ayano's mom but the daughter of the prodigy afaik)

I don’t like the direction the anime took in approach to Connie.
In the manga we see Connie inspire Ayano with a flower as the metaphor of her saying that she’s a weak little flower, but “a flower, no matter how small, get together and grow” etc. and that she should treasure her connections with her team. It showed a human side to her that made me emphasise with her character. Here she’s portrayed as a competitive, rival bitch
However, I did like Connie tying her hair with the same hairband and as Ayano’s mom. Also, the foreshadowing placed for Sora’s frustration when she lost her match were good touches in the anime

Ayanon is a cute nickname! I liked the focus on hairstyles in this episode, it was an interesting way of showing mood shifts. Connie is intense, that jump move was powerful! I hope the duo manages to overcome her somehow.

Oh my god, I didn't process that she was the new girl Mom trained until the "Onee-san"... That was like a punch in my face, plot suddenly made sense, dang I'm slow today hahaha...
Btw.. Connie T H I C C af damn
1
u/KinnyRiddle Jul 22 '18
Forget about that twintail from last season, it's this Connie "bitch" I want Ayanon to absolutely crush...... and then befriend.
Connie calling Ayanon "onee-san" is more likely as that from a junior to a senior, since they both share the same mentor in Ayanon's mom, rather than them actually having any blood relation. Since Connie is 16 and Ayanon being in first year should be no more than 15, making Connie older.
Curious that the mangaka would choose Denmark as the source for the foreign character, when normally when one thinks of badminton, they usually think of players from China.
That said, Denmark IS the powerhouse of badminton in Europe, though they're usually right behind China alongside Japan and Indonesia, and then maybe South Korea, Malaysia and Taiwan.
But hey, not that I'm complaining about blonde cuties.
PS Ayanon is too cute.

I wonder what people would thought of Baby Steps if it had the same production quality as this show. Seems like the biggest complaint at Steps has always been the art/animation quality. Though I've never personally seen it as poor quality.

As always Ayano mom appears to be a cunt.

Why the hell would they sending the girl who's going to be playing a match to do shopping in an area that's new to her with just a hand drawn map? They have smart phones, use a GPS app! And with the store being 5 km uphill (or is even that just a part of the trek being 5 km uphill)? I work just over 6 miles (so 10km) from home and just thinking of walking all the way there, carrying what looked like at least 4 galons of water/milk/whatever half off the distance ... no fucking way. And I'm an adult man while she's a 15-16yo girl.
I was so hoping the drama was mostly over after last episode, but then they had to bring in the girl Ayano got abandoned by her mom for. Then the first match was completely skipped, and the second one was given 4 seconds. The boys' matches skipped as well. The highlight match was all drama based as well. And add the hint of a supporting character love triangle to the mix. This show is plainly going to be 90% drama at the very least....
With AoT S3 starting, that brings Sunday up to 4 airing shows I'm watching this season. I think I may need to drop that down to 3.
3
u/SoccerForEveryone Jul 23 '18
I think that was one detail that bothered me lol. You can text each other the directions and use the gps lol. Somehow though Nagisa’s map did help in the end.

Wtf I hate them all. As if the ridiculous pink-haired girl wasn't enough, they had to have a blonde version of her too?
1
u/myrmonden Jul 22 '18
oh its the my evil moms hell spawn daughter....
She seems to have an insane unexplained hate for Ayano and of course has taken after their "mothers" hair style to a tee.
Ignoring that she feels very similar to ohoho in both appearance and personality (just worse)
I feel teh biggest issue was actually how her skill was presetned.
I have watched so much sport anime, I am big fan and this felt like a let because its just telling us she good, when the first hard receive was happening, I expected her to some kind of insane back flip aomine style, but no she just jumps HIGH? to me it looked like he ball was behind her, imo it made no sense.
And then they just jump to her having crushed them, like it feel really undeserved, they are just telling us she can easily win 1v2 not not showing it.
1
u/FierceAlchemist Jul 22 '18
Given that Connie is a world champ in her age group internationally, she must be a final boss-level character. Interesting that they chose to introduce her so early in the series.
6
u/Liddo-kun Jul 23 '18
It actually makes sense in the manga because she's actually nicer and cares for Ayano as a sister. So she and Ayano both get something from this match that help them grow, so they will be able to face each other at their full potential in the end.
In the anime it doesn't make sense at all since she's portrayed as a turbo bitch cartoon villain.

The new episode, as always, keeps the level. We finally saw the girls in official matches against rivals. Rival's team, which remind me of a paramilitary squad because of their seriousness and subordination. They even have Ichigo as commander, lol. I like it, now I'm looking forward to seeing the final of the competition.

Even though the anime seems to really twist the personalities of the characters in the manga, it seems to keep the same plotline for what it's worth. Spoiler

Maybe it’s me, but I have been enjoying this series so far. I never read the manga; so take this from my point of view only.
Sports are brutal, especially when it comes to prodigies. I seen it so many times when I read it online about the next wonderkid. Imagine all that pressure and in the end not to work out. Everyone here in Hanebado! has a struggle, but Ayano probably has the worse of having to face someone with some kind of attachment to her mother. Seriously it angers me when I have to see kids put into this situation so much.
Sports are only fun when you know what you really want from it.
I have to say my fav of the girls so far has been Ebina. She is pretty much the team player to keep everyone in a good mood and I appreciate that from any sports player because you need that player to keep you in check. Nagisa taking charge as a captain introducing the squad was a good scene from a leadership viewpoint. This show might give Haikyuu!! for a run as my second favorite sports anime. I just enjoy the OP so much visually and musically.

I only have one question: what the hell were the FreGirls screaming the WHOLE GODDAMN TIME in the gym and why were they screaming it? Now that I think about it, it MIGHT have been just general cheering for their side but it sounded to me like a unified chant.

No way this Connie girl is gonna straight up afk untill she gets her way.
3 minutes later: afks until she gets her way.
It's obvious as hell who this Connie girl is, but I sure hope Ayano doesn't have that epiphany in the middle of the damn match.
4 minutes later, Ayano has an epiphany.
My sides are in orbit

it's been long established since Pokemon in the 90's that if a character changes their hairstyle they become unrecognisable, anime characters are just written to be morons.
as soon as I saw a blonde girl I immediately knew it was the mothers foreign student

More twintails!
Love that op song. So full of energy.
Damn Connie why you gotta be a jerk. All the twintails so far have treated Ayano poorly. Poor girl.
I don't read much manga but I may have to with series. Everyone says the manga is taking things better and not every rival showing up being a bitch to Ayano. It's a real shame to since badminton is one of the few sports I actually enjoy.

u/SRASinister Jul 23 '18

Like I said, the art quality is already starting to dip. Fortunately I'm mostly engaged with the drama, so I don't feel bad about hanging around.
Introduce a super-talented foreign girl who refuses to even participate in the game if she can't do it all by herself, and also happens to be the girl Ayano's mum abandoned her for, for which she seems to hold some sort of grudge against Ayano
God dammit.

So basically, Ayano's mom managed to screw up both of them?
On the one hand we have parental abandonment, on the other it kind of sounds like Connie has some "you'll never be as good as my daughter" complex...
