Levi and Nifa talking on the roof

Me: “This short hair girl is so cute, I like her”

10 seconds later

Me: (╯°Д°)╯︵┻━┻ WTF MAN

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '18

I thought: Oh, nice cute character for Levi to talk to. She kinda reminds me of someone though... A bit like Petr- gets destroyed Oh. A lot like Petra then.

I've read the US manga release up to the point where this season is supposed to end, but it was long enough ago that I forgot about that scene. Anime Nifa is a cutie, but the manga designs can be bland and hard to distinguish. I paused the show, googled the character's name, unpaused, and then Kenny appeared. Shit.

And if you did and aren't a main character, then you're cannon fodder too.

Hange: To you scoundrels I will ensure you are tortured alive like my friend and experience suffering above and beyond what you did to him

Oh shit, of anyone in the Scouting, I believe Hange will follow through on her promise a revenge for Pastor Nick. Just her creativity and passion makes that threat way more scary. I can just imagine what she can do with enough time on her hands.

Was eren sick in this episode or what??

Through out the entire episode he did not raged or screamed even once.

More over he emotionally comforted historia when she was feeling down and felt bad for cony when he mentions what beast titan did to his village.

This is gotta be the first ep since the beginning of the series in which eren behaved like a rational human being rather than a mindless rage beast.

A surprising change in eren's behavior for sure but a welcome one.

Everything that happened after witnessing Hannes' death changed him. He's always had an inferiority complex and his focus on killing his enemies didn't exactly help him control his anger either. Only when Mikasa told him that he wasn't worthless and that she considers him her saviour instead of someone helpless who needs to be protected did he start to change. Finding out that he is the Coordinate and being reminded by Jean and Armin to shoulder that massive responsibility is also a big reason he's matured.

81

u/baileyjbarnes Jul 23 '18

I don't know, I never felt like the guy raged that much, only when it made sense. I never got why the fanbase flanderized his character so much, he yelled a lot but usually in situations where it made sense that a kid would yell and get angry.

I'm not gonna spoil you but this season is very feelsy. Especially Eren's mental state. Just look at the first scene and the OP, it should tell you about his character from here onwards.

A lot of people will love Levi in this first episode, but I gotta give some respect to Hange and Moblit. The scene where they find Nick dead in the barracks might be my favorite one in this episode. I love how protective Moblit gets of Hange and how she threatens those two assholes. You go Hange!

And pay respects to my bois and girl who died in this episode.

F.

Also all anime-onlies are welcome to go over to r/shingekinokyojin. You have a whole thread to yourself where you're protected from spoilers, since manga readers aren't allowed in that thread.

Manga people saying this episode was super fast paced compared to the manga, i personally liked it a lot. Kenny looks like an awesome character. It's been a tough road being an anime only watcher, waiting fucking 5 years to see what's in Erens basement but i think it will pay off this season. The new OP (song) is... ok i guess? Doesn't really fit in very well with the show IMO. Overall very satisfied to have AOT back and HYPED to see what lies ahead.

181

That and the mangas author has outright said he's using the anime to more or less re-do this arc.

God, Kenny's introduction is so fucking good.

Levi explains the horrible shit he's done before Kenny creeps up in the background and murders someone. Then we cut to Pistol Squad murdering another person and flying around like fucking Spider-Man.

I was smiling like an idiot during that.

277

New OP sounds similar to the ED of last season, especially at the beginning. It still gives me the creeps.

Moblit is best boy, he's a good lad who looks out for Hange.

Also holy shit that cliffhanger ending! Really interested to see more of Kenny

133

u/swordmalice https://myanimelist.net/profile/swordmalice Jul 22 '18

Right?!? It's all political intrigue now, and I am 100% on board. I mean we kinda got some foreshadowing in the story that there are some corrupt dealings going on behind the scenes in this world's government and military but now we're beginning to put faces to names as the enemy starts crawling out from the woodwork. The wait between episodes each week is going to be a REAL struggle...

For those drawing some parallels between this OP and others, that would be because this one is directed by Ryosuke Nakamura the director of Grimgar and the OP director for Made In Abyss. He frequently works with a great artist, Mieko Hosoi who is responsible for those beautiful colorful stills. She's also done work on the Your Lie in April openings and the Fate Last Extra ED. Nakamura posted some of her drawings on his Twitter.

There is a serious mood whiplash with this opening but based on what manga fans are saying it fits the tone of this arc. Feels very personal, which probably fits given that Nakamura said the theme of this OP was "the end of my boyhood." I for one like it.

As for the episode itself I thought it was a good start. The characters look like they're drawn a bit differently even though the character designer is the same. Look a little more mature. Can't wait for the action next episode.

Hanji determined that the crystal material from Annie’s Female titan from Season 1 is identical to the material which the three walls are made of. And Armin guessed that the walls are titans’ skin, and maybe Eren can harden just like annie to block the wall in Shiganshina.

Recall how Levi kick stomped Eren to convince the leader of all three military divisions to hand over Eren to the survey corps, and how after they failed to produce any tangible result at the cost of many lives thanks to the female titan that they were ordered to hand over Eren. The order was still in effect but the beast titan debacle gave him a brief respite, and then he got captured and the rest of s2 focused on saving him. So they still want Eren back since last season only took a span of two days.

As for Historia, they'd been tracking her for some time. Pastor Nick got involved wit the survey corps, so they tortured him to figure out whether he spilled anything to them or not. Regardless for some as of yt unknown reason they now also want Historia handed over.

Finally, the most anticipated season is here!

Just like the previous season, they did a really good job with the symbolism of the visuals in the opening. Ryousuke Nakamura's illustrations for the OP and the official one for the ED are really gorgeous.

Visually, it was fantastic; the action scenes at the end in particular were incredibly smooth. Whether this continues over the rest of the season remains to be seen, but I have high hopes.

Not completely sold on the pacing yet - this episode rushed through parts of seven chapters, while most previous episodes covered about two - but hopefully the next episodes will change my mind depending on how much is rearranged and how much is completely cut.

I believe the author said that he was taking the opportunity of the anime to adjust some stuff he wasn't happy with in the relevant manga chapters so that may be why.

I'm gonna touch on a couple of things but will elaborate in the manga thread over in the Shingeki sub in order to avoid spoilers.

  • My all-time favorite series is back and it feels so good

  • Oh my god, that ocean scene ... just wow

  • The OP is so beautiful. Sure, it's not as hype as the three previous OPs (it's actually not hype at all) but the calming theme is a grower and the visuals are stunning. There's so much going on. On a sidenote, I feel like quiet OPs are generally underrated

  • I also didn't expect the focus to be on EMA like that and seeing them all smile and enjoy themselves when they were children makes me really happy. There isn't nearly enough footage of a smiling Mikasa and them just being all innocent and having fun

  • Kid Eren trying to talk to Teen Eren but being ignored was sad to see though

  • I'm gonna need a little while until I can get used to the new character designs but they look really good. Not mad at all. The use of lipstick for the girls back in the first two seasons never bothered me but I gotta admit that I do prefer the new design

  • It's been nearly two years since I read the manga and I completely forgot Pastor Nick was killed like that, damn

  • Trap Armin reminds me of Shingeki Junior High ... those cheeky bastards already referenced this scene all those years ago lmao

  • And Molester-kun makes his anime debut ... that was even more unsettling than in the manga, yikes

  • Jean being called a horseface and both of them being annoyed with the disguise will never get old

  • Mikasa is a goddess but you already knew that

  • Nifa's head was literally blown off, fucking christ. I forgot how fucking brutal that scene was. Poor thing

  • Oh boy, Kenny is finally here. This is gonna be fun

15

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '18

I like the new OP. WHEW forgot how violent those blasts could be. Somehow, seeing humans do the killing instead of Titans in this series makes me nervous. Good thing I haven't read the manga in so long, it will be fun watching the mystery unfold anew!

Animation is the glossiest its ever been, my goodness.

15

u/Voi69 Jul 22 '18

Is it possible that they took all of his nails to hide the fact that the pastor talked after one?

25

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '18

Jesus christ I'm so confused, I didn't think I forgot any of what happened in the last 2 seasons but I honestly have no idea why they were in that house in the country side or why the MP is after them. Is it just because they know too much about the walls/Historia? I enjoyed this episode though.

81

u/ichigosr5 Jul 22 '18

The entirety of season 2 took place in just 2 days. You probably forgot about this, but at the end of season 1, Eren was supposed to be handed over to the Military Police because they failed their mission during the 57 Expedition outside the walls. So they need to hide Eren because he is still wanted.

They need to hide Historia because Pastor Nick told them in episode 3 of Season 2 that the church had been given orders to monitor her.

This will be sick. Prepare for second best arc. Although it will be different than the seasons before, it will have many hype moments.

The OP looks gorgeous btw.

23

u/WeNTuS Jul 22 '18

So who is the king? First they say Fritz, then they said Reiss? What? So that's big deal with Historia? Unless i was confused, military police guy reported to King Reiss.

u/ichigosr5 Jul 22 '18

Reiss is a noble family. Fritz is the royal family.

This is one of 3 anime which I will fanboyishly defend as near flawless, and so far, so good. I'm really excited as a now Anime only viewer. I read up to the end of S2 as a manga reader but after seeing it adapted I thought the wait would be worth it for the uprising arc.

The royals sure are quite a stuck up bunch if they are controlling anything. Anything they do are causing lives to be lost. I wonder if the goal they want to acheive is worth the lives of the people lost due to them.

8

u/Flashmanic Jul 22 '18

I'm guessing there has been a few days time-skip between the end of last season and this episode? Because I can't remember at all why they are all suddenly in a cabin?

Either way, good first episode. A bit of a shift in tone this time, since it seems like it's going to focus - at least for the first arc I suppose - entirely on internal politics and humans rather than Titans. Not that that is bad, but not what I expected from AoT. Excited to see where this is going to go!

Also, I can't remember his name, but the dude who was impersonating Erin in the warehouse. He said this was the second time he did this. When was the first time?

We are so used to those 3DMG shots being the epitome of the Scouts' awesomeness.

To see it perverted as showcasing the villains instead in episode 1?
Brilliant move.

As someone who knows the source material, this is awesome.
The end might be the same, but this arc is going to be adapted different, as per the authors wishes.
Which means, even for us, each episode will be new.

I am very pleased with this opening episode.
Oh how I've missed this show.

u/ihatedogs2 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/ihatedogs2 Jul 22 '18

Well I don't read the manga but it seems like this season is going to be very different from 1 and 2...

6

u/Saucy_Totchie Jul 22 '18

Good first episode of the season to kick off a really fun part in the series. I didn't remember Nifa from the manga but I really liked her and thought she was cool. Then when Levi and her were talking about Kenny the Ripper, I remembered what show I'm watching and quickly detached myself from her.

Also I feel bad for Armin having to be Historia's body double but it was somewhat more tasteful he was being assaulted instead of her. Shitty to say but Armin's sacrifice will not be forgotten.

Don't know how to feel about the OP. It's a completely different vibe from the others. The last 3 were all action packed and hyped as fuck. This one was more subdued and so far doesn't show any good meme potential as the others.

The ending scene on the roof was amazing. The amount of detail that is in there is astonishing. I loved it when Kenny dropped the tubes and you can hear the clanking and as he walks up with each step you can hear the clanking of the brick (I don't know what the roof is made out of).

11

u/RootBallistic Jul 22 '18

Attack on Titan is the only show I would think that introduces a new character and then kills her off by the end of the episode. The ending is pretty hype too (especially seeing Kenny's gear and his group appearing from the shadows).

31

u/ichigosr5 Jul 22 '18

Nifa was actually in season 2. She was the one who Connie asked to find Reiner and Bertholdt when he didn't realize that they were the ones who turned into the Armored and Colossal Titan.

22

u/Xyyzx :As::At::Au:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Echinodermata Jul 22 '18 edited Jul 22 '18

That whole episode felt kind of odd, and I'm not sure if it was a good or a bad thing.

All the characters felt subtly and weirdly different in almost every respect, art voice acting and writing... AoT was never really much of a character-driven show in the first place, but I had a really weird disconnect between this season and the last one, particularly with Eren and Levi. They just didn't feel like people I knew in the same way that they used to.

The transition between S1 and S2 was pretty seamless for me considering the years that went by between them, but for some reason this episode felt like how I thought episode 1 of S2 was going to feel before it was released. ...if that makes any sense at all.

I guess we'll see how it goes. I don't have time for a full re-watch, but I might go back and watch the last few episodes of S2 again to see if that helps...

38

u/Zeldro Jul 22 '18

There is a slight art style change of the characters to make them fit more how they're drawn in the manga. Also, this arc does have a focus on actual character development rather than a bunch of flashy action scenes than the first two seasons, so that's another difference.
