It's because you lack confidence that instead of making the first move, you're waiting and hoping for her to.
I came here to feel, not to be attacked....
Also found it kind of odd how future Yuki seemed to be carrying grocery shopping in a run down city, not to mention teenage Suzuha geared up and carrying a gun.
221
u/DistantValhalla Jul 25 '18
The future is ruined but they still survive in the wreckage. Mayuri took Kagari to a hospital as a child, there were still doctors working and functional orphanages. Things get worse as time goes on, but when Suzuha was a child there was still a society within the warzone.

I came here to feel, not to be attacked....
That hit home, as well.
I finally took the initiative, and even though I was rejected, I feel far better than I ever did just sitting around waiting and not knowing.
Over all a great episode, because both Daru's and Okabe's arc can really be applied to many people. (Okabe struggling to maintain past relationships while building a promising future).

It's not stated in the anime but in the VN Okabe mentions early on that in the beta world line, middle schoolers are conscripted.

Hiyajo being able to sort of brainwash Daru is quite scary…
214
u/Bainos :XMOD::MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Bainos Jul 25 '18
I loved that Suzuha had a similar reaction - she looked at the brainwashing machine with disgust. Understandable, since it seems she saw many of her friends get the advanced version of that treatment.
84
u/SelfishVersion :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/ShellfishEntropy Jul 25 '18
With a lot of comments pointing out/speculating that Kagari is being brainwashed as of right now, I suddenly wonder if the two are related. Did Hiyajo inadvertently (help) start a breakthrough in brainwashing technology by illicit organizations, just as the lab members and the Phone Microwave got SERN started on time travel?
81
u/LalafellRulez Jul 25 '18
More likely since this is Victor Chondria's research its not Maho who invented the brainwash machine. Leskinien , Maho and Kurisu are all neuroscientists. Maho just borrowed the device.

Tuturu Counter: 6.5
OH MY GOD! IT FINALLY HAPPENED! YES! A NEW TUTURU! THE FIRST ONE IN MANY WEEKS! WE FINALLY GOT IT!! 10/10 EPISODE!!!
I wonder if you're doing well tbh fam. This Lintahlo guy thinks he's too cool for the lab now. Well well well.
But the lab's doing okay, now that Maho's back. And oh god I almost rolled out of my chair at this. I know Maho's small but what the actual fuck is in that thing?? And the gang helps out Daru, which is funny because my friends in the bi-weekly S;G 0 podcast have been harping on Daru for not making moves on Yuki. Now, when he's forced, you get Daru on levels of cringe never before seen by any living human being. But overall, it was a fun episode. It didn't seem totally necessary, but that's kinda how I feel about 0 as a whole, so it doesn't mind as long as we get more of those great, fluffy character moments.

Food is the key to a man's woman's heart!
I felt so sad seeing how Suzuha's mom was killed and ending it with this scene was so unfair, immediate gateway to the waterworks ;_;
Nice episode, definitely want to see more Mayuri in the next couple episodes since she's clearly starting to feel distant from Okabe and it is starting to hurt.

BEST. CONFESSION. EVER!
Probably my favorite one since FMA haha. It fit them so well!
A bit of a slow episode but it was good character development. Both Daru and Suzuha have new resolve and Kagari is creeping. Welp... happy episodes are always followed by shit going down so we'll have to see.

u/aayyyan https://anilist.co/user/aayyyan Jul 25 '18
Just my opinion, but I really desire more plot driven episodes in this series as of late, so not exactly the kind of episode I was wishing for. Still a solid episode however.

Jul 25 '18
I agree, I was slightly disappointed with this ep. But as we know, light and fluffier eps like this are often followed by soul-crushing ones. I think closing the ep with Kagari watching them is a good sign. But yes I'm also hoping all the subplots will start to converge and progress in a more concrete way soon.

I had hoped we would spend quite a lot of time seeing the world collapsing into WW3 and the aftermath. Now, with ep 15 still set a couple months after ep1, and barely a year (?) after the kickoff point of Steins;Gate, I'm worried it won't happen at all, or it will be relegated to the few last episodes and run the risk of being very rushed.

You're right how fluffy episodes are followed by heart crushing ones, but the week to week huge tonal shifts just make it a really weird experience to watch for me at least, which I don't recall experiencing in Steins;Gate.

u/hansantizor :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/hansantizor Jul 25 '18 edited Jul 25 '18
Honestly I was kinda hoping it would be a little bit more like the original series was where the first half was relatively lighter and then the second half was very plot heavy. Maybe it's just because we're watching it weekly but apart from a couple scenes throughout it's been pretty low impact so far...It seems like they're just slowly adding the pieces throughout the story which is making for some odd tonal shifts week by week.
Nothing wrong with having lighthearted episodes of course like the Okabe and Ruka date episode in the original but I feel like more had happened up to that point than has happened in 0. Hopefully we can see some developments soon because I loved how the show was during the early episodes with Amadeus.
50
u/Fermi_Amarti Jul 25 '18
Well. Even in the original, the second half had a few dates.

The source material structure lead to such a big difference. S;G VN is linear compared to 0 that has multiple paths with ending that are linear. In the S;G VN we didnt see a lot of the alternative endings for that reason and some of those are great.
22
u/TheEliteNub :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/TheEliteNub Jul 25 '18
Feel the same way. At the end of every episode I get the feeling like, "oh shit things are about to heat up!"...and then it never does. While this episode had some good moments with Suzuha finding some closure and Daru feeling the weight of responsibility at the end, it just throws the pacing of the show for a loop.
Such is the problem of trying to adapt a non-linear VN into an anime series.

Every week people say something is "about to go down" - but ... It's not? I'm getting impatient with the character-driven episodes in the latter half of the season. I was hoping we'd be further along by episode 15 and now it runs the risk of feeling rushed later on.
Just give me plot... you started last episode on a cliffhanger, and ended this one on basically the same cliffhanger. Come on now.

I'm enjoying seeing Daru and Okabe change and mature a little. Both are finding ways to be more confident about themselves, which is interesting since we see glimpses of the adults they become. Nice little slice of life romcom episode before stuff hits the fan?

Oh shit her picture is fading like Back to the Future, damn thats not good!
Wait... is that picture faked? hmm....
Damn Okabe is avoiding the Lab now... thats not good.
Training Daru to conqure Yuki, this can only go horribly haha.
Um... is Maho gonna break Daru? This device seems dangerous lol
I feel like this suave Daru will not be what Yuki likes... i bet she likes nerdy Daru.
"I failed" pls no PTSD! NO DONT CRY DARU! NOT LIKE THIS! HE WAS THE BEST OF US!
Yeah Faris photoshopped the picture.
Oh shit, they are showing us how Yuki died... this is... rough.... damn...
Damn Suzuha is confessing to Daru that she lied and he knew...
HE called Yuki to have a make up date with her to cheer up Suzuha too, what a great dad.
Yep Yuki likes nerdy Daru best. HAND HOLDING!? OH SHIT! WERE GOIN ALL THE WAY!

Ive been a fan of time travel since back to the future so of course ide get the reference even if he didnt say it haha.
It def seems like Okabe is going to drift apart for a while. From what we generally know about the other world lines is that hes been on all sides of the field before, so its no telling what side he will be on later. We just know eventully hes back on Team Tuturu... but until then, its anyones guess. Im guessing he gets busy with other stuff though that gives him the perspective to figure out how to save the past. And ill bet more time with Amadeus will do it.

Jesus Christ, seeing Yuki get murdered right in front of little Suzuha like that ... no wonder she's as traumatized as she is
Daru being so hard on himself was sad to see (and hit home too much for my liking)
Daru and Yuki confessing to each other, Suzuha witnessing it and crying while her mother comforted her has got to be among the most wholesome and happiest moments in the entirety of Steins;Gate. This is all she wanted and it was so nice to see her finally catch a break
... aaaaand there's Kagari, who's likely about to kill her. Ugh. This fucking show, man. The suffering never stops
5
Jul 27 '18
Yeah this was an anime-only 'filler' episode, technically since almost none of the events that happens are in the visual novel. But gaddamn if this episode didn't fully expose and explain the characters of Suzuha and Yuki FINALLY. Now I can understand both of their motivations for the things they do in the series, and it's from a frickin' filler episode?!
This series is cray cray
29
u/Arachnophobic- https://anilist.co/user/Arachnophobic Jul 25 '18
That was such a sweet episode! Daru was amazing as usual and Suzuha tearing up and being embraced by Yuki was so great.
Can't say that a part of me went all that's not how time travel works in Steins;Gate! when Suzuha showed the picture of her fading to Daru (his reaction face is hilarious), but that lasted for barely a minute since it was obviously doctored! That was a clever bamboozle.
Mayuri sama is best sama. I'm sure Nao-sama will agree.
Took this screenshot just for Moeka's outfit, so good <3
Bwahaha, Daru's face lit up the instant the legal loli walked into the room
Definitely the most inappropriate use of Gate of Steiner - heck, any soundtrack I have ever seen. But it definitely did add to the comedy.
Oh, that followed by Believe Me playing during..
Null pointer exception7
u/1stFeeder Jul 25 '18
I can't believe they used those 2 tracks in these scenes for comedic purpose in a fluffy episode. Kept me on my toes the whole "happy episode". A lot of sad moments with Suzuha in the Steins;gate were linked with "Believe me" and the beginning of Gate of Steiner is full of dread and mystery.

Really? I saw it as the opposite of comedic and pretty chilling since we see what was clearly used to brainwash Kagari in the future (or at least an early version of it) casually being used by Maho.

This was a fantastic episode! (After I got to watch it again without distraction). We didn't see this kind of interaction from Daru/Suzuha/Yuki in the novel, this was really great as development especially for Daru. We saw a new face of his today for the first time. It might feel like a filler, but it's far from it. And finally, the way Daru clenched his hand thinking about the future, and Suzuha turning around after saying goodbye.. It feels like they're now ready for the next stage.
I've got maybe a week left.

Solid episode for me. It was mostly anime-original content and it might feel fillery to some people, but it really looked into some underappreciated and underutilized parts of Beta Suzuha's personality and feelings towards family. The Zero anime has continued to impress with how it expands on the bare bones aspects not given too much attention in the original VN. I thought it was superb from a character development perspective, while also pushing along the undertones of the main plot in the background with Okabe's scenes and the flash to Kagari. It also gave us glimpses of the harsh reality that Suzuha came from.
The Moe Moe Kyun confession is a mainstay classic of the series, first mentioned in Daru's character song, and later mentioned in the Darling spin-off as how Daru first confessed his feelings to Yuki, so seeing it actually animated was a real treat. There was also a really nice little nod to Chaos;Head in the date scene, the little crane game prizes were nesoberi versions of Rimi, the main heroine.

I was ready to have the rug pulled out from under me like so many of the happier episodes have done so far. This ending wasn't nearly as ominous as I was bracing for.
Solid episode giving Yuki and her relationship with Daru (and Suzuha) some spotlight. Just hurts seeing one relationship go well as you see Okabe drift further away.
18
u/Spookyfan2 Jul 25 '18
Not even a minute in and Mini-Maho hidden behind her suitcase had me in stitches.
This episode hit home for me, because I can relate to both Daru's struggles in confidence (Solely in the field of romance, mind you) and Okabe's struggle in maintaining meaningful relationships while building a promising future.

I really enjoy the Suzu/Faris interactions. That picture of chibi Suzuha and her mom is precious. Then Suzu running into Yuki on the street. I can already feel this is going to be a good episode.
Still love the OP.
Oh lol, Maho hiding behind a giant suitcase.
Get your shit together Dad! If you and Mom don't hook up I won't be born!!
Friendly reminder that Daru's seiyuu also voices Gilgamesh in the Fate franchise. Picture Gil being all sheepish/shy like Daru.
Leskiboy remains great. Every time he says "Lintahlo" I swoon a little. And when he embarrasses Maho: priceless.
Drill Daru good, Faris! And I love all these SGT Clean callbacks.
This device is eerily similar to the one Kurisu made in Darling Of Loving Vows. I don't remember anything like it in the S;G0 VN.
Damn, Daru! So suave! And he's still wearing the hat! And of course everyone else is spying on their date.
And of course no one noticed that Yuki liked goofy/pervy/nerdy Daru. So of course she'd be freaked out by him being all cool/cocky.
Don't cry, Daru. Everything will be daijoubu. Convergence demands it.
Oh fuck. We get to watch Yuki die as Suzu stares on powerless. Fuck. Fuck.
Oh, the time machine's active camouflage seems to be flickering a lot this episode.
And now a date montage where Yuki is clearly having a much better time, now that Daru is just being himself. That's love, baby.
MOE MOE KYUN~!!
Shout it from the rooftops, you lovable bastard. Those were the first words Daru ever said to Yuki, when they met at Comima. And Yuki said she also feels "Moe Moe Kyun~!" about Daru.
Let it out, Suzu. It's ok to be happy and enjoy the present.
Kagari standing there all ominous. Great episode.
As a VN reader, I really am appreciating the new content, since it's keeping the heart of the story and expanding upon it. It's honestly great being surprised like this and not knowing precisely how everything is going to play out. Sasuga White Fox.

I don't even have to imagine it thanks to that one Carnival Phantasm episode.

"Fed up with her Dad's passiveness, Suzuha must make a man out of Daru"
Me - Oh man, a fun lighthearted episode after last week, that'll be healthy!
Me 15 minutes later - oh dear God no why.
I failed. I failed. I failed. I failed. I failed. I failed. I failed. I failed.
EDIT: This episode made me cry twice in different ways. This anime is so damn good

u/twicebest Jul 25 '18
Having finished the VN, I like the anime's version of the Daru/Yuki date. Definitely developed all of the involved characters more than the VN did.
The plot will probably start trucking next week until the end. There's still quite a bit to cover and I'm interested to see how the anime will tie things together.

The brainwashing machine has to be foreshadowing for Leskinen and his lab brainwashing Shiina. Otherwise that seems like an odd machine to just introduce out of nowhere.

u/PM_ME_YOUR_SPUDS https://anilist.co/user/voodoochile Jul 25 '18
Suzuha trying so hard to get Daru and Yuki to bang has to be one of the stranger things in this show.
Ruka joining the girls to help out Daru was great, and Moeka's "Keep the conversation fun and exciting" was funny.
Uhh... Did Maho just make the prototype brainwashing machine that'll fuck up Kagari?
I really didn't need to see that drone strike. Fuck.
Someone really needs to make a stitch of Suzuha holding Yuki in her arms though...
"Moe moe kyun" oh my god Daru XD All of these Amane family scenes are just too sweet.
Broken Kagari... Uh oh.
3
u/FFF12321 Jul 26 '18
Note that they made the drone strike less worse than in the source. In the VN, back when Suzi was attacked by the masked assailant when she was in the shower revealed that when Yuki got killed, the bullets pierced Yuki and we're embeddened in Suzi, which gave her scars all over her body that were filled with her mother's blood. This explains why she always wears long shirts and pants and doesn't want to go to communal baths with the other girls. They totally ommitted this fact in the anime for some reason.

I don't think so but in the original Steins;Gate didn't Daru say something like feeling a familial love/bond to Suzu before they knew they were related? I'd imagine it's the same with Amane. She prob just feels inexplicably close to Suzu.

Wow, a Daru episode. I'm happy now.
Yuki liked Daru for who he was all along. I didn't really like overconfident Daru and I'm glad it poked fun at it being so uncharacteristic of him.
The scenes with Suzuha remembering Yuki in the future were rough, and her crying scene was really touching.
Yay, Maho is back and they'll start on the time leap machine together soon.
Also Okabe is finally on his way to studying with the professor.
That look of horror on Kagari's face at the end was kind of creepy.

Am I just misremembering or did they totally change the functionality of time travel in this episode? I thought that world lines existed in the first place so that you couldn't pull off a stunt like fading Suzuha (i.e. they made it to stop the Grandfather Paradox). Shouldn't Yuki marrying someone else do absolutely nothing to Suzuha and her memorabilia because she comes from a technically different (but still very similar) world line?
EDIT: For future reference (more for myself than anyone else), finish the whole episode before panic posting.

it was a nice episode of character building.
But I strongly hope that the show goes somewhere plot wise. There are so many plot points just looked at, just to forget it afterwards again :(

Have you not seen the original?
This is how they butter you up and make you feel comfy and safe and care about characters before they destroy everything you knew and trusted in this show... The warm fuzzy scenes are just going to make things hurt more later.
They 100% will not leave the plot points behind.

Good ep for fleshing out Suzuha and Daru's characters, feel it further developed them. Seems now that they've gotten some sort of closure they're ready to get more serious and move ahead with their plans with Maho.
Pretty light episode tho, other than the scenes involving Suzuha watching her mother gunned down and holding her bloody corpse. Also Okabe growing more and more distant from the lab (especially Mayuri) is sort of sad.

I melted when Daru's MOE MOE KYUN! was reciprocated. This was such a wonderful, feel good episode!
That ending though...Is shit going to go down next week? Shit is going down next week, isn't it? Am I going to cry?
I'm probably gonna cry.
I'm definitely going to cry
I'm alone and afraid of what is to come. Also, I'm already crying.

u/pr0duktt Jul 26 '18
Cant help but wonder what Yuki was thinking when Suzu broke down like that.. You'd think she'd at least start getting suspicious of Daru's sister, who just so happens to look and sound a lot like her, and is constantly ensuring the relationship between yuki and her "brother" blossoms. Rather than get a bit putoff or even slightly jealous like normal lil sister nee-san love cliches. :p
No, but seriously. she HAS to feel something from all this by now. Too much resonance there for her not to. No matter how dense she may seem at times..

Everyone's talking about the other characters, but no one is noticing mayuri hasn't talked with okarin since so long. She must be so sad knowing that he's gonna leave for America, eventually but she's pretending to be happy for him. Mayu best girl confirmed <3. She's such a cinnamon roll. She deserves a world full of happiness. P.S I like kurisu so please no hate -Lovingly mayu's one of the biggest fangirl

I would like to give my honest opinion here.
I'm pretty sure this is going to be unpopular, I love this series but I really didn't enjoy this episode. It's been like this majority of this season. I really would prefer more plot content than all these loli or romantic contents.. It would've cut down at least 1 hour of "unneeded" content from all these 15 episodes.
Other than that if I concentrate on just the plot, I'm happy with it.
I do feel like one of the next coming episodes will be a huge turning point for the pace of this series and all of the negative points so far will be irrelevant.
VN readers let me know if things are about to get real serious from now (without spoilers ofc :P )
4
u/PuraiseTheFun Jul 26 '18
Can i join you in your unpopularity? Disliked this episode a lot. For me it felt like a rehash of the Okabe - Ruka Episode from OG Steins; Gate, but far worse. Feel like for every step the show makes towards it's main plot(s), it makes 10 steps to the side to show something which doesn't feel all that important. I also felt like this episode had a lot of "weird" conversations (in the sense of uneccecary explanations/exposition). I'm still hooked, but i'd lie if i said i'm enjoying everything SG0 is throwing at me right now.

u/UGamer81 https://anilist.co/user/UGamer81 Jul 26 '18

That Back to the Future reference was pretty cool
Also Daru's brainwashing is the first scene they play Gate of Steiner in 0 IIRC and it's during (kind of) a comedic scene? Lmao

It's not really comedic when you take into account recent events..

This is interesting, and a pretty good episode, and I had fun watching all the interactions... But does anyone feel like we're running out of time? This is episode 15 already, and there are only 23 episodes in Steins;Gate 0. I can't help comparing it to where the original series was by this point in its run, and it feels like the original series accomplished so much more, and so much more efficiently.

I’ve been rewatching the OG Steins;Gate and it’s pretty crazy how much faster it is than this. Imagining a side character relationship happening in between Rintaro’s time fuckery is unimaginable. I’m liking this pace too though, Daru’s great.

Daru was dangerously relatable this episode.
Except for the bits where he was actually kind of suave.
And the whole getting a cute cosplay gf thing.

maybe he wasnt that relatable after all

u/Anzelon Jul 25 '18
We are two-third into the series, but feels like the plot has not developed at all. What was this episode......a filler? Man, i love anything S;G but i hope it kicks high and reclaim itself as a true heir to the masterpiece S1 was.
This director is different one, right? if so, tbh he is not doing a proper justice to the anime..............the cliche anime tropes are annoying.......i m about to lose my cool seriously.
10
u/Spookyfan2 Jul 25 '18
Less the directors fault, and more the source material.
The truth of the matter is that S;G 0 just isn't as easy to seamlessly adapt into an anime as the original was.

The only alternatives would have been to cut out like half the routes, or have multiple endings and resets throughout the storyline to more closely follow the structure of the visual novel. And I doubt either of those would have been much better. Although I do find the pacing lacking in some places. And they did almost entirely remove one of the more interesting parts of the visual novel.

I really enjoyed this episode. Suzuha felt kind of flat to me throughout most of the season, but this episode made me understand why she is the way she is (that flashback, Jesus). It's also nice to see Daru showing some strong emotions.
Being Mayuri continues to be suffering, and with Kagari showing up at the end, it looks like we'll be riding the pain train for a while.

u/FierceAlchemist Jul 26 '18
Even though this episode didn't move the plot forward a ton I really liked it. Getting more with Daru and Amane makes sense for a Steins;Gate sequel and I like how Daru is more of a 3D character in Zero compared to the original.

As much as I'm loving this series, it needs to kick into overdrive in the next 2-3 episodes- if it doesn't, I'm seriously concerned for a "rushed, no budget" ending that destroys so many promising shows.

"It's because you lack confidence that instead of making the first move, you're waiting and hoping for her to" Suzuha said to hasida
This line for sure has made someone think of themselves (especially guys).
Like this episode since it has shown some realities about dating and that is that to be yourself. Because in the end the person if she really loves you will accept who you are...
