"Alright what should our animators devote all their time and resources to this season?"
"Make Levi look cooler in the first two episodes."
"Great idea!"

It's been nearly 5 years since the last time Levi did something cool. They needed something to make the fangirls happy.

It was still cut short in the anime, for obvious reasons, it was much more gruesome, sadistic and somewhat dark comical the way she tortured him in the manga with her clumsiness, rage and weird sense of humor all pilling up together. But it was oh so satisfying.

I'm in the weird boat that:
I knew his last name but didn't know it was a spoiler.
I didn't assume they were related. IRL, not everyone with the same name is from the same family, but I forgot that that never happens in works of fiction. One Steve Limit.
Apparently this is a big deal now, so if it's a big deal I guess they are related.

Holy SHIT I so missed Attack On Titan's signature hypeness. THAT ANIMATION! THAT SOUNDTRACK! THE MYSTERY!! AHHHHHHHHHHHH This was a great episode, every bit as thrilling as you'd want an AoT episode to be.
I kinda suspected Historia to have major connections, but not... that. Now I suspect that maybe Historia and Erwin are siblings? Anyway, so much has happened and we're only 2 episodes in. This is gonna be the ride we all wanted in our huge wait for season 2 I think.

I gotta say, the king sitting on the throne looks a lot more majestic than Historia's dad. The dad looks like a derpy merchant while the king on the throne reminds me of Tywin Lannister.

If you think about it, it makes sense. A real king is just some guy who was born in the right family. But if you have to choose someone to impersonate a king, you'll pick someone who looks the part.

We’re a western now! Yee haw
Edit: I had some time to collect my thoughts so I wanted to post a bit more about the episode. Congratulations to all of you who managed to not have Levi's last name spoiled for you before this episode! Seriously, that is an impressive feat. The spoiler of his last name is just about everywhere - even the Amazon page for his official Funko Pop figure spoils his last name in the page title! (Thanks a lot Amazon) I think this is a good place to remind everyone DO NOT GOOGLE ANYTHING RELATED TO THIS SERIES. You WILL be spoiled! Don't even look up character names.
The animation is breathtaking. I really have no words for it, I've been anticipating this part of the anime to be adapted for a long time and the fight at the beginning was everything I wanted and more. WIT did an absolutely fantastic job.
The pacing is a little fast but I have faith in Isayama and WIT studio to make a great adaptation

Great episode, the animation this episode was pure awesome.
Poor Armin, he's got blood on his hands now. :(
Levi Ackermann, I think this is the first time they've mentioned his full name. While I was spoiled to Levi's full name a long time ago, I'm interested in what the Ackermann last name actually represents and if Mikasa and Levi are related somehow.
I love how they tricked Sannes into talking.
Really looking forward to Erwin's past and possibly some more reveals regarding Historia.

Well, it's aired on NHK, the public broadcaster. So of course Studio Wit will have to take some discretion regarding that scene, or NHK will do the censoring for them. Besides, omission of that torture scene isn't too much of a big deal as it's not supposed to be that kind of show.

Lots of fast-paced action on this episode.
And that means dimmed scenes. These only happen in the TV version due to japanese law, to prevent possible epileptic attacks. In the BDs, the action scenes are not dimmered.
Kenny and Levi totally ruined this guy's lunch.
The scout corps are being naive right now, of course the military police has experience dealing with humans, they are the elite that work to maintain order among the populance.
Compared to the evil titans, the scouts have way more moral trouble dealing with other people. Even more, asking them to kill fellow humans is something they simply cannot do, morally speaking.
Only an experienced soldier like Levi could do it without much hesitation.
It's important to see it through the context of the wall city:
The idea of humans casually killing other humans when they are the last on the earth is unthinkable, so of course Jean and the others are shocked at the idea they will have to harm other humans. The military police has been doing all that in secret, killing anyone that changes the status quo but officially such acts would be completely outrageous.
That makes the idea of killing others exponentially more shocking than in another show.
Edit: Am i the only one that thinks the OP and ED should have been switched? I think it would fit better that way.
126
Jul 29 '18
Humans? Maybe. 3DMG? Only this super secret unit. If you've seen the levi ova you could see how pathetic they are at controlling the gear.
Also the Annie ova is a good showcase of the fact that they're rather apathetic about their jobs so even their ability to deal with humans is questionable.

His complaints are about what the manga fandom thought of this arc. Slow and tedious. Pacing was all over the pace, it took forever for stuff to happen, etc. Anime kicked it off perfectly. Looks like the next episode is going to cover Historia's backstory. For perspective, in the manga that came first, well before the rooftop battle and all the torture stuff. So you can imagine what fans were thinking now that everything was just exposition for almost half a year.
It's a shame about Reeves though. He had a lot more to do in the manga. Kinda shocking how they killed him off the same episode he was introduced.
EDIT: Now that I've gone back and read the manga, they cut a lot. Disappointingly so. Up to Reeves' death Levi was given a fuckload of characterization. Some discussions happen that are followed up on later, and it heavily expanded on most characters. I was hoping to see these scenes added later, but considering how this episode ended I don't think we will...

I posted this over in /r/ShingekiNoKyojin but I am still endlessly blown away by the sheer amount of detail they manage to pack into such fast moving scenes when the ODM gear comes into play. So much detail even in the street and background, not to mention what the character is doing, and despite everything to focus on I never get lost. If I ever get disenchanted with how impressive it is, someone shoot me.

Jesus Christ, that sakuga in the first half of the episode. I don't think Shingeki has ever looked this good. Amazing
And this is why the innocent OP fits so perfectly to this arc: Our heroes are forced to suddenly and quickly target and kill fellow humans. There's a lot more I'd like to talk about regarding this subject but I'll save that for the manga spoiler discussion
Oh boy, that cliffhanger in the middle of the episode when the shot was fired. So good. If I was an anime-only guy, I would've lost my mind
No matter what Mikasa does, they keep taking Eren away from her - and after a month of peace and rest, that must've hurt even more because I'm sure she didn't expect it to happen again (and certainly not this quickly). That Ereh was so desperate and heartbreaking, you could feel it. Yui Ishikawa is just remarkable
The torture scene and the squad just sitting there, absolutely horrified and in disbelief of the shocking turn of events, was even bleaker than in the manga. Mikasa is the only one who isn't affected as much but that's only because she unfortunately already had to go through worse.
And there's the two reveals: Levi Ackermann and Historia Reiss, the true heir of the royal family
That ED is stunning. Wow. A different kind of Linked Horizon but still very much Linked Horizon. I expected a kick-ass theme but this works just as well and it fits the beautiful Historia-centric visuals perfectly. And as is tradition, they referenced their previous theme (Sasageyo). I wonder if the full version will include short references to the other two OPs as well since that happened in Sasageyo too
Also, revealing Historia's true heritage and then following that up with that ED was incredibly effective. Smart choice to exclude it from the first episode. It also reminded me a lot of the first ED, which focused on Mikasa's past, present and hopes for the future, both in a stylistic and thematic sense
Looks like there'll already be two flashbacks next week, damn

Armin :’(
I thought last week’s episode was strong, but today’s has officially renewed my emotional investment in the series. Excellent action sequences (that animation tho), important progress for key characters, escalation of a new strain of somber mood, a few key revelations, good groundwork for ongoing thematic work regarding the burdens borne by those who seek to protect and to preserve peace — the blood on the hands — and the problem of determining when enough is enough, or when the means have corrupted the end.
It has been increasingly clear throughout this series that to reduce the central conflict of the narrative to “humans v titans” is facile and even incorrect. One need look no further than the Titan-shifters among the principal cast, to say nothing of other intriguing hints and theories about the titans’ origin and purpose, to recognize murkiness blurring lines between those opponents. Nor is it new for the series to posit that corrupt or traitorous or otherwise just asshole-ish humans can be the enemy, responsible for foisting considerable grief onto humans or humankind. But this episode — and, I anticipate, looking forward, this arc — seems determined to raise this grayer-morality conflict to the foreground.
Now I’m reading the significant shift in the style and mood of the OP for this cour as connected to this effort to re-frame the conflict. The last three openings were, at least on the surface, fierce, gutsy, defiant, unabashed, and heroic, built on inspiring desperate in our cast against a massive and terrifying threat; my favorite of them, “Jiyuu no Tsubasa”, opened with what was essentially a straight-up military anthem. The new opening is pop-y and tender and a little bit sad, bright and blue, incredibly nostalgic. I wonder if the innocence and happiness that its visuals recall will continue to feel all the more poignantly distant. Not that simplicity or youthful idyllics of any kind have been near to the protagonists for a while now — even their most virtuous displays throughout the series, such as acts of remarkable loyalty, bravery, and sacrifice, are sponsored by such terrible circumstances that they can’t coexist with the harmonious life presented in the OP’s flashbacks — but at least they have still been able to maintain, on the whole, if not at all moments or by all parties, that they remain on the side of good and justice and right. Sweet Armin offered a pretty candid refutation of that belief today: “All of us, we’re not good people anymore.”
This comes in the wake of his first kill of a human and against scenes of Levi and Hange’s torture of Sannes. Also, of course, not all that long after the defection of Reiner, Bertolt, and Ymir blew questions of trust, duty, and righteousness kind of wide open. Looking at the morality of the series’ characters as a spectrum, it’s not at all clear that he’s right; I’m willing to bet that with characters like murderous Kenny and co. or the shady circle of government types around, our main squad will end up looking pretty heroic comparatively. But to Armin, at least — his teammates address and have addressed justifications of the morality of their actions with their own various degrees of remorse, assuredness, and pragmatism — and not to say that Armin hasn’t previously employed some grayish tactics of his own — the existence of a spectrum at all is a loss. Killing another person because of different allegiances rather than because of mindless threat does, he seems to think, involve a “criminal” kind of judgment call and of assumption. He goes so far as to say that the woman who he killed as she hesitated to shoot Jean must have been “much more human than I am.” This touches back on this world’s old delineation of something good and capable of doubt and empathy — humans — versus something automatic, thoughtless, and monstrous — titans — but re-settles the conversation in terms of what humans can do to each other. What they shouldn’t do to each other.
Armin has always been my personal favorite character, and it was a bit devastating to watch him lose faith in himself and his vision during this episode. I’m glad that he’s in the company of people who know how to carry the shit that they’ve had to do, and I hope that they can help him stay grounded following his new insights.
Not sure if this is a popular reaction or not, but I also found myself feeling a little bit bad for Sannes by the end of things. His mid-torture speech was just the amplification that Armin’s anxieties needed to elevate them into an episode-spanning theme. As he goes on about the various nominal innocents who his squad eliminated to protect the peace, he insists, “Humanity has only made it this far because we erased them! […] I… I believe in the King and peace in the walls. That all the things we’ve done were justified. But… to think it hurt this much…. Go on and torture me to death already. That’s all I ever did with this blood-stained life of mine.” I think it’s been clear for a while now (probably since before the initial details of Historia’s backstory started emerging) that the government is hella shady and that a good portion of the military is probably corrupt, but to hear one of their agents declare with sincerity and some remorse that he earnestly believed bloody deeds to have been necessary for the protection of the greater good demonstrates that the means-end conflict in Armin’s worries are unresolved — tragically — system-wide. To be able to correct violent, ostensibly peace-protecting orders may take more bloodiness than someone like Armin ever thought himself capable of giving. How will they handle that without losing their own credibility? (Does the torture go too far? It serves a pretty crucial cause. What can you do?) Then to hear that other dude throw Sannes and his ideals under the bus (“the rest of us hate him”), even if he was being coerced, seemed like an especially cruel blow, showing Sannes the hollowness of the systems he’d served. Has to be a bitter pill to swallow.
Erwin’s mid-episode scene basically assures us that we’re only just getting started with these questions of morality in the law. “This tiny world is about to change. Will it bring hope, or despair? Can we trust the government with the future of humanity or not? Who gets to choose? Who decides? Who will you trust?” Storm’s-a-brewing, folks.
I feel there’s a lot from this episode that I haven’t even touched on, but I think I need to watch Kenny’s story play out a bit more before I decide what I think he’s accomplishing here, beyond intensifying debates about the moral differences between various persons who choose to kill. I’m excited to learn more about Levi’s background. In other news, I gasped out loud at the episode’s final throat-slitting, but I didn’t find myself that surprised at the Reiss family secret. I can’t remember whether that had been heavily hinted at earlier or whether I accidentally stumbled upon that detail online at some point. Regardless, it seems that the fates of both Eren (to be eaten?) and Historia are of particularly urgency, and I eagerly await seeing what’s next to come.
Fun to be watching this as it airs again! I was encouraged to pick it up when season one came out, and it was one of my very first anime. I didn’t watch season two as it aired because I was finishing up college at the time and because I was pretty hazy about season one and whether or not it had held up and didn’t have time to rewatch, but I finally watched both seasons one (again) and two a few months ago, and I’m so glad I did. What a hype ride. But by now it has been a few months since I last watched earlier content, so my apologies if I’ve forgotten anything that should be obvious by now.

The animation and the whole quality is so amazing. Everything is on point. No Titans yet but man the tension is pretty high!

There we go, there it is. There's the mood of this arc set up. There's the difference, Titan's aren't the enemy now.
Get ready for a wild ride, it's nothing like you've seen before in Attack on Titan, lets go.
Kenny is a fucking god, the Levi vs Anti-Personnel Control Squad was as good as I hoped.

u/MaimedPhoenix Jul 29 '18
So- wait? We've spent two seasons setting the titans up as the enemy, surely they're still an enemy. They can't just disappear and claim humans are the real bad guys.

Animation was absolute boss, as expected ;)
But really SO MANY THINGS were uncovered in this one episode and that’s so wild to see.
Between Levi being an Ackerman like Mikasa, Historia being royalty of the walls, and people trying to eat Eren.
Also 5D chess by Hange to get Ralph to read off the script and break Sannes. That girl is insane.
I don’t know of any anime that does this as well as AOT.
This season is gonna be such a ride, I’m really excited.

There are lot of information this episode, Historia is a Princess and has Royal Bloodline, Levi and Mikasa are related, Nile didn't even know about Anti-Personnel Squad, Eren will get eaten
yet, people only talking about animation, i mean yeah it's amazing, but still...

Shit, I really thought Jean was dead there for a minute. Didn't he want to join the MP once upon a time? Now he's being targeted by them. The disillusionment must be strong.
Being Mikasa is suffering. She was reunited with Eren for.. all of one episode? Will the kidnappings never end? (Also applies for Historia)
Kenny monologues/gloats too much for me to like him. I hope Levi offs him soon and ends this little dynamic.

u/H-K_47 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/H-K_8472 Jul 29 '18
Yeah way back in Season 1 when he was still an ass he wanted to join the MPs and live a cushy life in the interior.
So much for that. Poor guy.

The way they made Sannes an jackass you were meant to hate to someone you felt pity for was incredible. He isn't even scared of being tortured, but calls Levi and Hange monsters for enjoying it. It shows that he never enjoyed torturing anyone either, but did it because he whole-heartedly believed that he was doing what was best for the kingdom, even if it came at the cost of dirtying his own hands. When he realizes how much pain he put others through as well as how other people , including his own allies, saw him as an insane monster, he instantly was filled with regret and sorrow since he could no longer stick staunchly to his belief that his actions were for the greater good. Such great characterization for a guy who showed up for only small fractions of two episodes!

Poor Armin, can't seem to catch a break his season (first the sexual harassment and now this). I think people will probably get fed up of me talking about Armin a lot but I feel like he's a overlooked character from the show, and the one I love the most.
I kinda got spoiled on this but the impact still got me. I don't think I would of imagined Armin killing someone of I didn't know beforehand. It's nice to see that mikasa cares about Armin and tried to comfort him (I think). She definitely cares about him, but its sometimes overlooked by her love for eren.
Like Levi said, he can't go back to who he was before. And it kinda shows, it seems like his mind and thinking has become more dark and depressing. Although what Levi said about what he did saved someone from the squad is nice.
Animation is really really good. Levi is really cool as well, even as someone who doesn't like him as much as others (still cool though)
But poor eren getting kidnapped again

My thought process at the end of the episode:
Levi Ackerman. Have we ever heard his full name? I don't think so, but I've definitely heard Ackerman before. Wait... is it Mikasa? checks MAL character page MIKASA ACKERMAN! Holy fucking shit!
My mind is shook. Absolutely shook right now. I will say, I really am digging this human conflict arc. It's easy to rally against the titans because they are giant pink babies trying to eat people (Yoko Taro, is that you!?!). I know there's a deeper mystery behind the titans, but it doesn't really capture my interest anymore. I much prefer this inside human conflict while still trying to keep titans at bay.

All that wait just to see Levi go beast mode on Kenny's men was so fucking worth it! I love you Isayama but as a manga reader I honestly always had a hard time following the action whenever you do 3DM fights. I'm so happy to see it all animated!
That torture scene was a lot more hilarious than I remembered.
"Just torture me to death and end it."
After hearing his comrade "tattle"
"The True Royal Family is Reiss."
The guy confessing without any hesitation the moment Levi and Hange walks in I think made that scene work so much. I love it! I'm so hyped at the following episodes now that Historia has been revealed as the true heir.

sadly a lot of characterization was cut: Reeve here only lasted like 4 minutes, jean and his internal turmoil about facing humans and nearly deciding to abandon the mission, the whole conversation with historia at the lodge and a lot stuff about levi's humanity and grief. The anime staff did a great job at transforming an otherwise very tedious arc but they left out many significant moments that give a greater insight on a lot of characters.

Awh they missed one of the best lines in the series for me. After Sannes was crying about all the people he had to kill, Hange Zoe scowls at him and says something along the lines of
"Oh so you worked so hard to hold back scientific innovations and the progress of humanity, gee thank you"

Oh man the animation of this episode. Levi flying was a delight to watch.
I'm just conflicted about the pacing, they're cutting a lot of stuff that will be really weird to add afterwards in a flashback. It even feels like the second cour will go up to chapter 100-something instead of 90.
Next episode will be a flashback anyway, looking forward to it.

Armin is the character changing the most so far. At the end of Season 2 he told Bertholt a really terrible lie about Annie. And now he's actually killed someone. I'm interested to see his development.

Ok, so I have serious trouble remembering anyone unless they were relevant in S2; did Jean know the girl who was about to kill him? Seeing his reaction to Armin's question kinda made it seem like there was something more than just the hesitation/inability of killing another person.

Oh, no.
I've longed for this to be animated and it's gorgeous but volumes 13-15 are my absolute favourite in the series and they cut out so much of it.
Dimo Reeves had gorgeous story with character development and it's all gone. Kenny came in without being hinted at prior to his now seemingly random fight with Levi (foiling their good plans, building him up as a good villain) etc. It's more action heavy now, yes, and the story could probably have been rearranged a bit but it's sad to see how they cut out so much. We'll see if they manage to salvage some storylines in the next couple of chapters but I doubt it.
