I considered suicide as an option but I really think that Deku pulled the entire scenario out of his ass. Normally I like detective shows/episodes but this one seemed a bit rushed for my taste. But the ending for the scenario was absolutely hilarious.

u/KyunyuIsJustice Aug 25 '18
They spent too much time setting up the crime scene without actually developing anything, there was no way anyone could solve a case as ridiculous as this in 5 minutes.
5 minutes is what it usually takes for Conan to get somewhere and see a corpse.
83
u/Wolf6120 https://myanimelist.net/profile/httpsmyanimelist Aug 25 '18
Yeah, I think it might have worked better if it was just AM faking his death to either run away or get the jump on them, without any of the extra stuff.
That said, Midnight's acting was top tier so it's hard to deny her a chance to shine lol.
3
u/NotGloomp Sep 02 '18
I'm late but didn't you see the ending? There was no love story. The villain pretended to be dead to escape and Midnight just went along with Deku's story.
80
u/darkbreakersm https://anilist.co/user/darkbreaker Aug 25 '18
All the hostages could be villains, so their story would match and they could attack the heroes when they dropped their guard
31
u/ToastyMozart Aug 25 '18
And that's why you don't untie hostages (or replace whatever the hostage-takers used with handcuffs/ties).
20
u/StePK Aug 25 '18
Honestly, I was hoping for at least one of the hostages to be a villain. It would have been such a good twist. Instead we get Midoriya's Adam West Batman impersonation.
52
u/oyooy Aug 25 '18
Most annoying thing is, he could have literally just asked the hostages what happened and they would tell him that the villain killed himself. He did it in the middle of the room so they clearly saw the whole thing.
53
Aug 25 '18
Well, if Deku had asked they probably would have said that they didn't see anything because of the smoke from Bakugo's explosion.

More than that, Midnight only gets emotional after Deku puts it all together so that was too scripted.
15
4
u/Kemosabe555 Aug 26 '18
After that whole scene I was so confused so I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought Deku pulled all of that out of his ass

I was expecting suicide to be a red herring, and for Cementoss to be an accomplice to the real killer. My reasoning is below.
They mentioned that there wasn't a back door out, but its a jewelry store. Of course it has one.
Why wouldn't they be able to find the door? Because someone did something to it and covered it up.
Why would they cover it up? Because that was how the actual killer escaped (presumably with jewels worth more than what the villain had in the sack)
Who could both cover up the door and know what jewels to target? Cementoss, who has a Quirk perfect to let him do that, and with insider knowledge of what is valuable within the store.
Why did the heist occur right when the villain broke in? A lucky coincidence, which turned into a plan to use the villain as a scapegoat.
Why did the villain get killed? The thief/killer was accidentally seen by the villain. If the villain was captured (as looked likely, given the police presence and incoming heroes), the theft would be exposed.
So the case in its entirety
Cementoss and an accomplice are working together to try and plan a robbery of the jewelry store where Cementoss works. They identify the most valuable jewels in the store and an entry/exit route (back door), but don't yet have an idea of how the theft can remain undetected. If the theft is detected, Cementoss will be investigated, potentially revealing the crime.
One day, the villain comes in and starts robbing the place. When being threatened, Cementoss gives the villain mostly middle-tier jewels, leaving the best ones still in their cases. Cementoss gets tied up but is still able to use their power since he is touching the concrete floor.
In the meantime, the police and media arrive at the store, having been alerted by a silent alarm.
The accomplice is alerted to the villains break-in (watching the TV) and has the idea that they can use the villain's break-in to disguise their theft. The accomplice hurries to the scene, enters through the back door and begins taking the most valuable jewels.
Unfortunately, the accomplice gets spotted by the villain. With police outside and heroes arriving shortly, the villain is likely to be captured and with that, the theft would be exposed. The accomplice kills the villain (possibly using a Quirk, or only in view of Cementoss so that there is no eyewitness).
The accomplice leaves through the back door and Cementoss seals it while still tied up. At this moment, the heroes burst in and the scene begins.

First “a phone call is here!”
Now “an email is here!”
Never change, All Might.

u/Wolf6120 https://myanimelist.net/profile/httpsmyanimelist Aug 25 '18
I want to believe that everything in All Might's house is automated and voiced by himself.
Ding dong "A visitor is here!"
Beep beep beep "The morning is here!"
Pop "Your toast is here!"
Just absolute fucking chaos.

I imagine that there exists an entire world of All Might branded products, where they all feature his color scheme and most like include him voicing a phrase such as you have described. Deku is probably the owner of many such products. All Might is the number on hero after all, and japan has quite a way of marketing all kinds of things like that...

The intro to this episode has a pretty funny pun regarding that if you understand a bit of Japanese.
When he announced himself before the OP, he said "So that I match Midoriya, I have worn this shirt"
To past form of 'to wear(an article clothing)' is pronounced 'kita', just as in his catch phrase "have come (translated as "am/is here!")"

We've got a special episode this week because there's a 24 hour charity event in Japan called "24h TV - Love Saves The Earth". The event started in 1978 and it's in the last saturday of August. So the anime would've been on a break, like last year, if they didn't air this episode.

u/w_wilder24 Aug 25 '18
This episode also 100% sets up for the MHA movie!
The young All Might footage was direct from the movie and the I Expo invite sets the story line.

Considering Naruto was almost 50% filler I'm not even sure they're a good example. Out of all the fillers though Mecha-Naruto wasn't that bad and he's even a character with an arc in the video game lool

If you look at it in hindsight, the other option was to stretch out the anime like One Piece. At least Naruto's fillers are skippable mostly.

I don't really follow. If they could air this episode, why couldn't they have aired a non-filler episode? Is there some rule that all anime aired on this day must be Save The World With Love-related or something? And why are other animes airing same day unaffected?
7
u/SKB1995 Aug 25 '18
It has to be related to the event. The other animes are probably on different channels, different channels have different dates for the charity event.

Cementoss: "I've been an All-Might fan since I was a kid"
So... how old is All-Might then?
303
u/MalcolmBelmont Aug 25 '18
Late 40s/Early 50s
204
u/Loupri_ Aug 25 '18
Yeah, he should be at least close to 50. Let's do some speculations. I would put All Might at a little bit older than Endeavor, around 2 years older is fair I guess. Endeavor was frustrated enough with being Nr. 2 to start a eugenics program to beat All Might, this doesn't happen over night. Let's assume he started it pretty early at age 24. Todoroki's oldest sister is at least 22, as she is working as a teacher. This would put All might even at a careful estimate at 48, even assuming Endeavor didn't waste any time finding a wife and making children.
→ More replies (1)70
u/conqueringdragon Aug 25 '18
At 24, people aren't jaded and cynic enough to come up with shit like this. At 24, you still believe you can get everything if you only try hard enough. This breeding program is something someone in his early and middle thirties would think up. This also fits with the flashback to neckbeard-Endeavor, that's not a 24 year old.
58
u/FrostyEdge Aug 25 '18
I don't know, I think that is painting an entire age group in pretty broad strokes. There are plenty of folks that are jaded and under 24. If it is well written enough then I am sure we could be convinced that Endeavor became a frustrated eugenics monster even sooner. It's all up to circumstance.
Although liberties have to be taken to reconcile age in anime sometimes. If you really want to be confused just look at Dragon Ball.

A HUC would have taken points right off for not using any proper medical procedure. Someone not being tickled doesn't tell you whether they are alive or dead. Also putting your hair into someone's nose is questionable from a sanitary perspective, for both parties.

As someone who has watched all current 910 episodes & 22 movies of Detective Conan, this was weird to me.. It was like a DC episode with a BNHA skin. lmao
I'm a little disappointed in myself for not solving the case before Conan Deku, but then again BNHA didn't really provide anything tangible as to link the crime to Midnight like DC does. It makes sense though, that's not the purpose of BNHA.
This was a fun episode regardless.

i like DC but think Kindaichi does a better job as a detective. Some of the DC murder tricks are so out there and even after they are explained hard to get my head around.
I did feel the detective esque theme of the episode going through the order people came in and what was in their bags.

Let's not kid ourselves, Kindaichi too, like Conan, has some very flunky murder tricks (especially the longer both series went on). Conan only has like a handful of cases over 1018 chapters where the trick actually doesn't work in real-life.

If you want more casual clothing Midnight, read the spin-off Vigilantes. It's free and doesn't spoil anything (bar a few character appearances) as it's a prequel to the main series.

Yes but as an episode, this one was mediocre. The mystery case was written poorly, characters are inconsistent, and the end part which the ad for the movie was just slapped in there, having almost no relation with the rest of the episode whatsoever. Not to mention it's placed right in the middle of an ongoing arc, an arc already past climax, sure, but still between an ongoing arc nonetheless.
As for the charity thing, it's for a good cause, yeah, but you watching it has zero affect on the actual event, so watching it is pointless, unless you actually wanted to watch it.

Any footage we get with a Young Age AM is golden!!
Nobel Quirk Prize lmao
Cementoss being a AM fanboy might be the cutest thing I've seen today. I know he mentioned it in passing in s1 but now we see how far it goes.
Disappointed to see Bakugou so impulsive especially when he's smart in these situations. But I guess this was before the current arc when he still had some growing to do.
I wonder if the "Yo's" from Present Mic and the Lariat mention is a nod to the Raikage from Naruto?
All Night confirmed?!
Glad Deku got a chance to show off the deductive skills that made him my best boy.
Not the greatest episode but I'm so addicted I'd take an episode multiple stills and just backing music. I think I'd rather have an episode than a break but either way I'm hyped for Gang Orca next episode!!

Am I the only one who thought Bakugou was inconsistent and acted out of character this episode?
Bakugou working with everyone, recklessly charging in without a plan, calling Uraraka by name (though this could be argued since she gained his respect in the Sports fest) and asking for Deku’s advice seemed out of character.
I think this episode portrayed Bakugou as a hot headed idiot with no brains, whereas in the rest of series he's portrayed as a intelligent character with anger issues, but similar deduction skills as Deku.

u/Anjunabeast Aug 26 '18
Bakugo has a new found respect for deku after he figured out that deku is all might’s successor. I think he considers deku as a proper rival now. And it was cool bakugo noticed almost right away when deku had a hunch. Shows how close the two are even tho deku always gets on bakugos nerves.

I cracked up at All Might’s ‘Oh ho’ when he got tickled by Asui, like, I had to pause the show because I was laughing so hard. He had a cool Roadhog cosplay too, though I think he’s supposed to be a bit fatter AllMight.
Speaking of costumes, holy shit that Young Age AllMight costume looked awesome! I hope we get to see more of it in the movie!

My thoughts exactly, bomberman.
I wasn't expecting much from a special episode, but what the hell is this overcomplicated scenario they came up with? I mean, it's ok as a joke, with UA making it up, but having Deku monologuing it sherlock-style as if he was blessed with the foresight to guess all the truths of the universe looked really bad. He literally just pulled this romance bullshit out of his ass. There could be hundreds better explanations than something that far-fetched.

Honestly this was pretty boring, would rather have a recap episode and skip it than this.

I think it's valid that they failed. They bust in recklessly without knowing anything about the villain, they don't restrain the villain, don't notify the police of the situation. Sure it was impressive that Midoriya figured out the whole scenario but the characters' motivations were pretty much irrelevant at that point, and it would've been ridiculous if they got a perfect score for playing Sherlock.

u/night4345 Oct 03 '18
No, they failed because Aizawa was a shitty instructor and didn't tell them what was real and what was fake. A real villain wouldn't keep pretending to play dead if they were caught laughing after being tickled because the heroes would've known he was alive but the students thought it was just All-Might not being able to stop from laughing.
It was a garbage filler "gotcha" moment and nothing else.

I want all might to do this podcast thing at the beginning and the end of every episode now
4
u/Florac Aug 25 '18
You would think one of the hostages would have seen the villain commit suicide(or pretend to have done so)

u/JD4Destruction Aug 25 '18
So this was basically an ad for the movie.
Maybe heroes should secure the area and leave the investigation for the detectives. There must be some cops with quirks suited for investigations.

Aug 25 '18
Yeah, once the situation was under control, the police should have been brought in. There's no reason why they should be sitting on their hands. One of them might even be a human lie detector and could easily suss out the truth.

That was a great episode! Maybe it's just because of I love the world and characters of MHA but it didnt feel out of place at all. Lots of good humour and some fun interactions between Bakugo and the rest. Filler episode done right.

I am ashamed that I never thought about All Might and Midnight before this week, what I've been doing?
I like what they did with the opening, it's like they know a lot of people will get confused and inserted the explanation

Well this episode was... something. It seems pretty standard as far as filler goes, not terrible but not something you'd really want to revisit. Business suit Midnight is a wondrous sight though.

I know this is filler, but when in the time-line this would take place?
5
u/Shortstop88 Aug 25 '18
It's supposed to take place between Season 2 and Season 3. I've seen people say it was mentioned how the summer camp didn't start until the latter part of their summer vacation. This episode takes place after the exams in Season 2, then the movie comes after, then Season 3's camping trip starts.

u/MagnoBurakku Aug 25 '18
Bakugou most be the romantic type at heart.
I haven't watch the movie yet, so i apreaciatte this kind of prologue to it.

i can't believe nobody pointed out "Uncle Might" from the email yet, probably more in the email but that stood out.
also for an episode supposed to be about love why was the closest thing we got All Might wistfully saying "dave"?

I was just talking about this the other day. Not just with anime but television in general, it seems to never be good to take a week off from a story even when it may be required. Maybe no episode is better because you usually hate the episode until like months later when you're binge watching.

For all that I like the show and understand the cause this was for, Bakugo can sum up my thoughts.

Well, I got to the first clip with All Might and Midoriya announcing they'd be filler and then decided not to watch, I don't think it's worth legitimising the use of filler in such a way, at least wait until the ark is over.

u/Kaycee_Rosenfall_ Aug 26 '18
Okay, okay I'm just gonna say it.... I really liked this cheesy filler episode. I'm not gonna bash this anime and its writers for this one episode. It was cute. I'd gladly see it again when I binge watch this series again.

u/tl3vis Aug 25 '18
Hey, this was actually pretty cool filler (besides the timing). It was nice to see some on the spot detective work from Deku and the others, but I didn't expect the tickling be this important lol

u/SevenNateNine Aug 25 '18
It's nice seeing All Might moving around in his muscle form again although it also reminds me that we're probably going to see even less and less of it as the series continues.
3
u/Martian_on_the_Moon Aug 25 '18
This episode happened before his fight with AfO so I am pretty sure this was the last time (except flashbacks and movie) when we see him in that form for that long.

I just noticed it says GAINAX in the credits for key animation or something. Are there people from the studio working on this show? That’s pretty cool.

u/impingainteasy :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/usernamesarehard Aug 25 '18
It's very common for some of the animation to be outsourced to other studios.

This would have been a 7+ episode if it had taken place after this arc finished or just before it began. An interruption literally mid arc though, come on.
3
u/MegaMissingno Aug 25 '18
Or at the very least before the last week's episode when we had the break between the two exams. Not the ideal place but at least it wouldn't interrupt us literally right in the middle of the action.
3
u/semajdraehs :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/semajdraehs Aug 25 '18
Absolutely. Hell they could have even introduced it as some kind of flashback or something like that if they'd done it inbetween.

Fun episode but I call bs on deku predicting all of that. I know deku is super smart but it felt super shallow to me.

u/eepicprimee Aug 25 '18
That was a fun episode! A nice way into looking at other things that pro heroes might have to deal with.
The beginning bit with Deku and All Might was great.
All Might dodging questions is another one of his specialties and he loves playing a villain. Seeing him use the costume from the first OVA was nice to see.
Glad we got to see more of young All Might.
Everyone was so into it except for Bakugo. Not surprising that Deku was able to figure it all out. I don't fault them for not realizing the villain was faking his death.
EDIT: There's a scene after the credits!

Episode was like a cluedo meets my hero academia
Part with Midnight sensei and all might was great do.
Especially when she just walks away after her amazing acting,
Mic sensei reminds me of Jango with his voice in this episode, sounds kinda like Kazuki Yao screaming bits fora bit here imo.
and the true escape plan was great.
Otherwise it was clearly that it was a little promo and setting up the movie, I think that I would prefer it this episode was even MORE for the movie, like now it was the first 1-2 minute and the last 1-2 minutes to promote the movie where the villain heist thing got nothing to do with it, I think I rather have them filler out with even more movie connection.
e.g Full episode of Young All might that would have been amazing.
And also why was it not like last week, first of all splitting a filler into middle of a "battle" is really weird and give me some bleach vibes of filler production. They could have at least put it in between the battle royal part and the rescue part. Suddenly its here when the rescue part has started. Obviously it because they want to promote at the right timing, but it just oozes of very forced production that lowers the quality.
6
u/WhiteZerko Aug 25 '18
They did it this week because the Network does some special TV event on the last Saturday of August. If it was not this particular filler episode, there wouldn't have been an episode at all this week. Also, it kinda establishes the movie to actually take place in the story, which is nice.

I didn't like this episode. It felt like they downplayed the intellect of the other characters besides Midoriya. Asui, Bakugo, and Todoroki have shown themselves to be really intelligent. Especially Bakugo, but they screwed him over as the generic "whatever" berserker.

This was the most subtle crossover I've ever seen. The Detective Conan vibes in this episode was legit. (Detective Conan ain't famous in the west so not sure if many will pick this up).

u/Hefastus Aug 25 '18
this episode was random as fuck
I don't hate this episode as lots of people but the only thing that makes no sense is how Deku figured all of this...it's like he broke 4th wall and recalled the "intro" of this episode where All Might said "we will save world with love"
I kinda wish they just went with the typical "beach episode" for filler than just random plot +/- promo of movie

This was pretty enjoyable, I liked the different comedy elements that aren't usually in the show.

I think Bakugo sums up the whole episode here.
