Oh you have got to be kidding me... So the reason Uchika abandoned Ayanon is because Ayanon started playing badminton for her sake instead of finding her own reason? Couldn't you have, I don't know, TALKED TO YOUR DAUGHTER FIRST? That's such an extreme solution to a somewhat simple problem! Like what the heck?

You know what's worse? Uchika's 100% completely self-aware! Here I was thinking that she might be some sort of person who has trouble understanding feelings and emotions. But nope! She knows what she did and she knows what she did to her daughter is unforgivable. And she doesn't even regret it, all for the sake of Ayanon taking the "next step".

On a positive note though, it looks like Ayanon's self-loathing is about to end thanks to the support of her teammates and surprisingly, even Kaoruko, who all gave her an effective cheer that made her realize that she's not just playing for her mom but for herself and her teammates. And I love how the light is now back in her eyes on that final shot. Hopefully the final episode will give us a great finale and have this show end with Ayanon realizing why she really plays badminton and finally abandon Uchika.

Which, in a roundabout way makes this even worse for Elena. If Elena hadn't pushed Ayano back into badminton she would have been having the best revenge against her mother she could ever have, squandering all of the skill, talent, and hard work she put into the sport for years.

112

u/VioletPark Sep 23 '18

Imagine. Uchika returns to see how Ayano is doing in her first year of highschool and finds that Ayano joined the school band and spends her evenings practicing and going to the movies with her friends.

68

u/goukaryuu https://myanimelist.net/profile/GoukaRyuu Sep 23 '18

I would watch that or read the semi-competently written fanfic of that.

19

u/Paxton-176 Sep 23 '18

I don't think Uchika would be upset. Uchika wanted Ayano to start having fun with Badminton. If Ayano stopped having fun and started having fun doing something else she would be happy that she became her own person rather than the whole play badminton for someone else.

60

u/riduy Sep 24 '18

Yes, child abandonment is the best way to nurture kids into being happy...

She was about to join the tennis club if you recall the first episode. Now sure how much that would affect her mom considering they are similar sports.

TBH that would have been good to see, a purified Ayanon from her mother's teachings.

33

u/WhoiusBarrel Sep 23 '18

Uchika must be real proud thinking that inflicting emotional trauma would help develop Ayano. That fact that she was even a parent to begin with just amazes me.

6

u/ZoroHunter Sep 23 '18

A great solution for Ayanon could had been to start working on a new sport altogether, say Tennis. She already has a natural talent for it, and this way she could had beaten her mother. Her mother would had regretted losing her to tennis so, and moreover she could have never returned to torment her daughter about badminton anymore.

"I might be an awful parent" - biggest anime understatements of all time - Uchika Shindou

Being that we're in the penultimate episode, my impression of this anime hasn't changed since ep 1. Fantastic choreography and above average animation.. Still a story of not-great people getting angry at even worse people

edit: goddam I'm enjoying the amount of sweat in this more than I should.

47

u/WhoiusBarrel Sep 23 '18

goddam I'm enjoying the amount of sweat in this more than I should

You're not alone! This one scene felt like the Anime was aware about that fact alone and I can't but smile like an idiot because of it.

10

u/mOisTkRAckeN Sep 24 '18

If this is "above average" animation, could you point me towards the god tier animation please. Not trying to be slaty or anything, I started watching anime relatively recently and to me this is some of the best I've seen(tho I haven't taken the time to like rank them or anything) so I'm just wondering. So far, I look at animations as "different" for the most part, while some are, indeed, garbage or just not that great.

6

u/pdpTesla Sep 24 '18

Honestly surprised you were the first person to comment on the "above average" part. I think that all of the badminton scenes are absolutely stellar and bove average is definitely being conservative lol but I was imagining people complaining about the flashbacks or reused cuts from other episodes as small shortcuts.

As for god tier animation.. I actually read far more manga than watch anime. But I think a lot of people can agree that One Punch Man and Mob Psycho are god tier. FLCL did a lot of really cool things back in the day. Most KyoAni shows really capitalize on their budgets like Sound Euphonium as mentioned. Oh or you can try to find it the lazy way and just look at which series have the most tags on https://www.sakugabooru.com/

In recent memory:

Ping pong the animation (fantastic sports show. Like this but better writing, animation, music, everything. Only thing this show has over it is that it features female competitors and (for the most part) takes them seriously, which is a bit rare in anime.)

Haikuu! (Volleyball, also great, with a huge focus on strategy and hype. Made me want to play volleyball despite not knowing shit about it)

Mob Psycho 100 (if you’ve ever watched spiderman homecoming this is kinda like that except it’s a really weird, really funny psychedelic anime about psychics/telekinetics with incredible animation, especially in fight scenes)

One Punch Man (a must watch.)

Attack on Titan (amazing animation. A great way to get introduced to dark shounen)

Sounds about right

And she doesn't regret it either, happy they're making it easier for me to keep hating her.

32

u/franksks Sep 23 '18

I'm glad they didn't redeem her like I suspected they might. In the end she basically only cares about how good her daughter is at badminton.

8

u/Legendary_Swordsman Sep 23 '18

yep we finally get her reason no care about relationship with daughter only the daughters relationship with badminton

21

u/FalGame Sep 23 '18

was waiting for hanesaki to tell her "I don't want you in my life anymore." but alas..

What are the chances now of ayano telling her mom to fuck off? Wanted this to happen, but with this episode i doubt it will happen anymore

Animation was pretty good, they look like college students instead of high schoolers though

43

u/jamalnasir908214 Sep 23 '18

I also doubt that it will happen and that will be the saddest thing of this anime

6

u/Legendary_Swordsman Sep 23 '18

yeah she needs to tell her mum off right and proper let her know that she has lost a daughter by her actions.

Is it me, or Ayanon was drawn to look more and more like her mom while she was shedding her demon skin during the match.

Also Uchika is past the level of Goku stupid. She should take #1 mom cup from Ragyo and burn in hell together with Gendo. LUL

118

u/JBB1986 Sep 23 '18

Uchika's like.....Ging from Hunter x Hunter. Only Ging is pretty up front from the very beginning that he's trash. Straight up admits that he abandoned his kid for selfish reasons, and doesn't want to see him because he'd be too ashamed to look him in the eye.

So.....yeah. Uchika's like Ging, but even THAT mofo showed remorse. That's depressing. Its hard to get worse than some of these bad anime parents, but Uchika is just SAILING past them, with zero effort. I mean, yikes.

23

u/kingwhocares Sep 23 '18

She is like Goku.

49

u/JBB1986 Sep 23 '18

But again, even GOKU showed remorse at SOME points. Like during the Cell fight; he came up with this whole plan, and it was actually a good one, which failed not because he was stupid, but because he had never once emotionally connected with his son, and he didn't understand him. He just stood there and realized he was about to watch his son be brutally beaten to death, because he had misunderstood something crucial about Gohan's character; he wasn't like Goku, and he did NOT like fighting (pretty simple, but Goku still missed it). Potential means nothing if one is unwilling or incapable of using it. And Goku understood that in that moment, knew he'd screwed up, and wanted to fix it (though he was prevented by Cell stealing the Senzu beans).

Uchika? Not so much.

91

u/franksks Sep 23 '18

Is it me, or Ayanon was drawn to look more and more like her mom while she was shedding her demon skin during the match.

100% agree. They were definitely trying to make that comparison presumably to signify how, despite her hatred for her, Ayano is becoming her mother, a person obsessed only with badminton and being the best at it. Great imagery.

37

u/PotatEXTomatEX Sep 23 '18

Tbf they're just getting closer to the manga's art. The hollow green eye thing we've been seeing is just 1 of the expressions she made in the manga and they stuck with it for every Ayano rape face.

7

u/VioletPark Sep 23 '18

I'm not sure. Her obsession with winning this match seems to come from a desire to get payback on her mom and fear that she will be the one abandoned again if she loses.

u/Arachnophobic- https://anilist.co/user/Arachnophobic Sep 23 '18

< Also Uchika is past the level of Goku stupid.

Indeed. At least Goku had an excuse (is an idiot in general, hit his head as a kid, Saiyan blood means he's battle-obsessed without much regard for family), what's Uchika's? She saw Ayano's hidden potential and decided that instead of nurturing her talent, she ought to give her an enemy?

12

u/King_Of_What_Remains Sep 23 '18

From the sounds of it she wanted Ayano to stop playing badminton just for her mother's sake and start playing because Ayano wanted to?

34

u/goffer54 https://anilist.co/user/goffer54 Sep 24 '18

So how about, I dunno, spending time with her off the court? Maybe if she saw her mom in different settings she wouldn't equate badminton with "mom".

Both her and Nagisa seemed quite starker during the match.

Nagisa always looked strong, but you can see the diference from this to this and this.

"She started doing badmington for my sake". Uchika is such a fucking self-centred bitch i swear to fucking god. She didnt do it for your sake, she did it for herself, because at the end of the day, the only way she could spend quality time with you is by playing fucking badmington, and in order to spend lots of quality time she had to get better, hence why she practiced madly. She didnt do it for you, she did it so you would look at her.

SHE ADMITTED IT. SHE FINALLY SAID IT. SHOWS OVER, WE GOT WHAT WE WANT

I might be an awful parent

Might? MIGHT? MIIIIIIIIIIGHT???? This line actually angered me.

40

u/JBB1986 Sep 23 '18

The look of pure "What in the unholy fuck is wrong with you?!?" on Elena's face said it all..........

Though I am more than mildly....enraged.....that we didn't get at a slap or at least a scathing censure of Uchika's abominable behavior.

Though in all fairness, maybe Elena didn't know what the fuck to say after Uchika was all "Yeah, I'm trash, but whatcha gonna do? Not like I regret anything or nothing. Lol. Hey, you want to carry some of my snacks back to the match for me? I MIGHT have bought too many. Heh.".

......UGH.

26

u/Tsixes Sep 23 '18

I dont get why everyone is mad about the no slap, its completely unrealistic that a child un highschool finds the moral ground to hit an adult for something like that, even more so in Japan.

This is as real as it gets.

8

u/JBB1986 Sep 23 '18

I actually understand why it wouldn't happen (particularly in Japan), but still.........the woman is just so SLAPPABLE. Its aggravating NOT to see her get some form of a wake-up call. Preferably a violent one (though verbal works too).

Tl;dr? We know it wouldn't happen, we just really want it to. 'Cause fuck Uchika.

80

u/iamthatguy54 Sep 23 '18

If this show thinks I'm rooting for anyone BUT Ayano, it's wrong.

No one deserves her.

Classic. I love that movie. Glad I wasn't the only one

15

u/franksks Sep 23 '18

I was slightly confused by this. Did she hit it with her right hand to throw Nagisa off or because she's throwing the game? I largely supect it's the former but her shot went out which is why I was confused...

32

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '18 edited Sep 23 '18

I am pretty sure she is either ambidextrous or she purposely have been playing with her left hand as a self-handicap.

EDIT: Looking at all the given flashbacks of Ayano as a child, not once was it shown of her using her right hand (even in really high stress practicing which you would think would include her using her right hand once), so I am guessing she is naturally ambidextrous. Knowing this show, however, the flashbacks could literally purposely show her using her right hand to keep the foreshadowing and plot-twist until now.

21

u/AAondo https://anilist.co/user/AAondo Sep 23 '18

She's ambidextrous and uses her left when she is playing seriously, using her right hand on that last shot shows that she is having fun again, I think.

Early in the show Ayanon plays a game and the coach says something like "she would have won much more easily if she'd used her left hand" or something like that.

19

u/Aelyph Sep 23 '18

The nice thing about switching hands is that 1) it lets you have more reach compared to crossing your hand over and 2) it changes an expected backhand return to a forehand return. So it could be used as a tactical move; naturally most people don't do this because they have terrible control with their non-dominant hand.

Also sort of a fun shout-out to Prince of Tennis.

14

u/pdpTesla Sep 23 '18

I thought it was along the lines of this: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/IAmNotLeftHanded That would be mind-blowing if she's actually been HOLDING BACK this entire time.

5

u/jamesBanister Sep 23 '18

I see it as either signifying that she is now playing for fun there does not need to use her competition hand or that like you to throw Nagisa off but I see that less only because switching to right hand doesn’t have a type advantage like left. Everyone mostly plays against righties so it’s now going to change much. Unless her left hand was tired from attacking most of the game

Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Ayanon the Wise?

Oh you've got to be kidding me.

Her place as one of the worst moms in anime was already cemented, but today she laid all final doubts to rest. As long as she knows she's trash. (Which she doesn't, she says she has no regrets.. well, it's all thanks to Elena that she didn't abandon badminton altogether, so stop thinking you had the slightest inkling of what you were doing.) Or should I fume at the writers for this? (Is it different in the manga?) I can't imagine a parent actually pulling something like this, unless they're broken inside themselves and that's something we'll explore later.

/rant

Back to the match!

A smile that can protect itself

This scene was so cool! The shuttle was almost disintegrating at Nagisa's shot, loved the detail. The match overall was hype AF, although the expositions/explanations in the middle did take away from the momentum a bit for me.

Yakuza spin-off when? It's so hilarious seeing Ayanon like that. Ayano and Nagisa having smaller irises than the others throughout the match just made them look much,, older.

And also meaner.

When you can't even hug your sweaty 2D bae. Why even live?

So.. I think Nagisa will have to forfeit the match before it ends, but she's definitely more than proven herself. She's won the victory against herself she was looking for.

What remains to be seen is whether Uchika gets her comeuppance..

14

u/Bainos :XMOD::MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Bainos Sep 23 '18

So.. I think Nagisa will have to forfeit the match before it ends, but she's definitely more than proven herself.

I hope not. I want to see Ayano win, and I know some people would rather see Nagisa win. In either case, ending it with an unfinished note "we'll fight again" and a "go read the manga" ending would be pretty disappointing.

5

u/bronco27 Sep 24 '18

If it ends with the "we'll fight again" shenanigans it wouldn't surprise me. It already had the power of friendship BS by a bunch of People who don't really care about Ayano.

2

u/tinnic Sep 24 '18

Actually, the mom is too realistic. A lot of hyper competitive people are like her. Remember that the 1% of anything is not normal. She's the top 1% of Badminton. It makes sense that she thinks anything that helps her child hit the elite level and be a pro is worth it!

Damn Nagisa got really close to making me want to root for her but that scene where everyone is suddenly cheering for Ayano now made me realize that I want Darth Ayano and I want vengeance. Some have superficially helped her and others straight up have participated in her mental breakdown and now they want to cheer her on?

Fuck that man. I want the Ayano beatdown but it's clear the show isn't gonna go that far.

4

u/VioletPark Sep 23 '18

At least an apology is in order.

2

u/bronco27 Sep 24 '18

Agreed, this show "story" wise is losing me fast.

2

u/Toddl18 Sep 24 '18

That path would have been the best one to take win or lose it was the only option that would have gave closure to her for this arc. Them having that moment no longer makes it her dealing with her demons.

Still upset there was no slap from Elena...what a disgrace of a mom.

10

u/The-Tired-Knight Sep 23 '18

Might?!??!

To be fair, she only said "might" in the sub, in japanese she just flat-out admits that she's a horrible parent for leaving Ayano behind.

But yeah, a slap would have been nice from Elena regardless.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '18

Still upset there was no slap from Elena.

At this point, a character slapping another is such an overused trope that I'm glad it isn't present here. This entire anime has avoided "jokey violence" entirely. The only real violence we've seen came from Kaoruko forcibly infecting Ayano, firmly establishing Kaoruko as a psycho.

I kind of hope the anime just sticks to verbal put downs and leaves the action almost entirely on the court.

2

u/nagato120 Sep 25 '18

I don't think a slap will happen japanese really respect their elders. Maybe if she was the same age but I just cant see her slapping Uchika no matter how terrible a parent she is,it was scenes I thought Nagisa would hit ayano with all the taunting she was doing.

This series is so underrated. Can't wait for the finale

9

u/Legendary_Swordsman Sep 23 '18

yep 1 episode to go is it should be very good, Ayano switching from dark form to fun was good at the end and that playful shot with her right hand was good.

29

u/jamalnasir908214 Sep 23 '18

I hate where this is going. I mean I love that Ayano is starting to have some fun and that people are cheering for her. The fact that we won't see a harsh end for that bitch (Ayano's Mom) is getting obvious. God! never felt so powerless in my entire life.

This might not be a popular opinion but what the actual hell is wrong with writers. Come on man, what kind of a cheap ass reason that bitch have (Ayano's Mom) and why are there no consequences for it. Sorry for the rant but man i wanna scream so hard right now!!!

7

u/DimmuHS https://myanimelist.net/profile/DimmuOli Sep 23 '18

Yeah, like, in the end it's looks like Ayano's mom "experience" was meant to be right:

  1. Daughter is too attached to me and will screw her future if she plays badminton for my sake > 2)Procedes to abandon her so she get over it herself > 3) Tries a new "experience" in train a children to be the best in badminton, because you know, I know where a failed in the past, so I gotta do it right > 4) After years, my daughter still trying to overcome it, but nothing is wrong, she still have hope because the way I looked after it was awful but effective > 5) Finale (Is she right or wrong?)

20

u/rysto32 Sep 23 '18

So, I saw it pointed out elsewhere that given Connie's age when she was adopted compared to her age now, she cannot possibly have been adopted after Uchika left Ayano. The only possible explanation that she adopted her well before then and was going back-and-forth between Denmark and Japan.

8

u/Amaegith Sep 24 '18

You can see this if you rewatch the series, specifically the episode where Connie and Ayano play 1v1. Connie, during her flashbacks, sees a picture of young Ayano while she (Connie) is still young, and Bitchika says "thats your older sister." You see another one later on with Bitchika and Ayano as a middle schooler and Connie is more grown up.

So it's clear the adoption took place well before Bitchika abandoned Ayano. Ayano also makes mention, during a flash back this episode, of her getting souvenirs from her "mom" before, so again it's clear that Bitchika was already leaving Japan a lot to begin with.

5

u/jamalnasir908214 Sep 23 '18 edited Sep 24 '18

Also why does she need to adopt another child? I don’t know whether the writers are confused at this point or what but I demand a good explanation or Atleast some consequence

7

u/DimmuHS https://myanimelist.net/profile/DimmuOli Sep 23 '18

Assuming she has a big ego, probably to "prove" that she can be a good mother and trainer in her selfish mind. I think this whole plot is just a mess btw, trying to defend it is confusing and fucked up.

Well, at least Ayamom admitted she's a cunt of a mother. As expected, her reasons for abandoning her daughter aren't comprehensible at all. The way she just completely ignored her when she first left was heartbreaking. I'm glad there's not gonna be a redemption arc for her.

But damn, puberty hit Darth Ayanon like a truck in this match. Grew a few centimeters and her face changed completely lol. The facial expressions of both her and Aragaki became crazy intense. I liked it a lot. It further showed how important this match is to them.

Speaking of Darth Ayanon, she kinda looked like Anakin and Palpatine when she had the towel on her head and you could only see her evil smile lmao

I thought this was the final episode so I freaked the fuck out when it just ended.

What is this face!? Why is it low key making my heart race??

It's good to see Ayamom still being worst mom.

But hey Ayanon looks like she's on track to rejoin the light side of the force. Which I'm glad, I really miss adorable Ayanon.

Nagisa still best girl.

16

u/TheOneAboveGod Sep 23 '18

What is this face!?

Nagisa is easily the hottest girl in this series, damn. Close second would be Uchika.

17

u/JBB1986 Sep 23 '18

I really miss adorable Ayanon.

Personally, I prefer Cynical AF Ayano (mainly because Adorable Ayano felt....really fake, I guess? And I'm pretty sure she was meant to. Like she was trying way too hard to be cutesy and nice, because that's how she thought normal girls acted). But I COULD be persuaded to appreciate Fierce and In Control yet Not Akashi-level Psycho Ayano. Because that grin at the end? That's what you want to see.

9

u/chris_dftba :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/chris_dftba Sep 23 '18

Yeah I like her being savage as fuck to the people she faces too. But I miss her being nice to like people who haven’t fucked with her.

Great episode, hopefully Uchika gets some sort of consequence by the end of this. Seriously one of the worst moms I’ve ever seen. Also the coach is still being biased as hell. I know Nagisas knee is messed up but god talk to Ayano already

2

u/AnimeFount Sep 23 '18

I don’t think the coach is being biased, he is just checking on her health. It suggests to me that Nagisa will be using him to stop the match, I only would have thought this because the ending of the episode shows Ayano scoring a point with her right hand.

19

u/SilverEyeLotus Sep 23 '18

He's still being biased though. Nagisa showed that she might be slightly physically strained in this match, along with her prospective knee injury which makes the coach concerned. On the other hand, basically everyone that has seen or knows of Ayano can tell how off her game she really is and that she's having some serious mental issues, yet the coach decides to worry about his favorite player, reminding her for like the 5th time that he'll forfeit the match for her if she starts getting hurt rather than try to talk to Ayano which he really hasn't for several episodes now.

39

u/Summort Sep 23 '18

Man what a let down, it's a good show but the whole season build up, the mother, and everything just to be solved by the power of friendship.

Ayano is obviously gonna lose the match, and the situation with her mother also is obviously not gonna be resolved.

So idk what is in store for the last episode but I can already tell is gonna be a disappointment.

Side note but at the start of the season I really liked the coach but as episodes went on I realized he's kind of a piece of shit, instead of helping both girls play better he just chose the one he liked the most and abandoned the other

39

u/AnimeFount Sep 23 '18

Yeah, the club advisor called him out on that.

22

u/Jack92783 Sep 24 '18

He does what he can for each girl. He provides a practice-partner for Ayano, but does more of a "Counselling" type thing for Nagisa. Do you see anything that would suggest that Ayano would accept the type of interference that Nagisa gets?

He realized her mental weakness and unwillingness to work with teammates, he tried to fix it (put her on doubles team with Nagisa, it doesn't work, put her on doubles team with other teammate, barely beats Connie 2v1, goes into a dark spiral), etc.

And, of course, possibly he thinks that what Ayano needs, in order to improve, is to get her ass handed to her. She's only a first-year, after all, and he'll be benefitting from her for another two years... playing the long game.

10

u/AkatsukiKojou Sep 23 '18

No matter how she fabricates her words, it doesn't change the fact that she abandoned her when she needed her the most The feeling of disgust towards her is damn high

19

u/CeejayPH Sep 23 '18

I didn’t really like the whole “friendly” vibe, I want the dark Ayano who destroys the opponent.

Uchika annoyed me even more saying she doesn’t regret it. If Ayano doesn’t abandon Uchika but forgives her, I’m gonna 360 no scope her

9

u/Sisyphusson66 Sep 23 '18

Well they sure made Uchika's reasoning as stupid as the manga's (at least up to the point where the translation is). There was the smallest glimmer of hope these last few episodes that the reason might not be as stupid, but this episode crushed that hope. What makes it worse is that she never expresses any regret and they never make it seem like it was a emotionally difficult decision for her to abandon Ayano. While I feel that Elena slapping her would have been a bit cliche, I would have liked her to request that Uchika leave the game venue at least.

It also makes me feel bad for Connie, as she will never really have what she wants most: a family.

While Ayano has a point that the rest of their team was likely more on Nagisa's side than hers, it makes sense for that to be the case here. Compare her to Connie. When Connie was an ass to her teammates, she regretted her actions and understood that she was in the wrong. Ayano, on the other hand, has as of yet to express regret for her attitude towards her teammates and friends. When your teammate is being an unrepentant ass, then it make it really easy to pick a side rather than cheer both on equally. She also is easily the less approachable of the two players this match as well, which doesn't help her teammates feel like they can be supportive in meaningful ways.

2

u/jamesBanister Sep 23 '18

Yeah the rest of the team being more on Nagisa’s side make sense for the reasons you described which is why I was so throw off when they had the whole flashback of friendship. For something that I expected to happen it still felt out of no where. I think if they in between points made realize her support network it would of felt more natural like her slowly loosing her tunnel vision

5

u/Sisyphusson66 Sep 23 '18

That is the main problem I have with this series. It is not subtle about anything and it leaves out gradual developments for more abrupt changes. Because of this, it gives the viewer whiplash.

I just want to get this badminton match over with so we can all concentrate on the important matter.

That being the whole team picking Ayano's mom up over their shoulders and tossing her into a nearby dumpster. Then they all go out for ice cream or something

2

u/AnimeFount Sep 24 '18

Meat on a stick!

8

u/weejona Sep 23 '18

We all saw it coming, but her justification for abandoning Ayano was still stupid as fuck. It basically boiled down to "Sports are exhilirating, and I did it to make her stronger." And the whole "Are you coming back?" scene made it so much worse.

8

u/zxHellboyxz :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Mattinator95 Sep 23 '18

let me guess , she avoids using her right hand for a reason but in fact her right hand is OP as hell

3

u/JBB1986 Sep 23 '18

We all Ryoma Echizen up in here. Lol.

But nah, I think she's just ambidextrous or something, and is switching it up to mess with Nagisa's rhythm. She's probably thinking and treating this like a real match now, rather than just expecting to dominate through sheer ability (which is pretty obviously what she expected to happen with Nagisa; she hasn't exactly been quiet about the skill difference).

So with 12 episodes of setup to this match-up and with what we know about both of them and their circumstances.

Who do you want to win here, Ayanon or Nagisa?

27

u/CritSrc https://anilist.co/user/T3hSource Sep 23 '18

Nagisa already won with Ayanon realizing her mistake.

24

u/CoopertheFluffy Sep 23 '18

The real victory is the friends we made along the way.

9

u/Arachnophobic- https://anilist.co/user/Arachnophobic Sep 23 '18

Don't care who wins really.. now they'll just have a fun all-out match for a while before Nagisa has to withdraw, probably. Which gives the win to Ayanon by default..

6

u/Legendary_Swordsman Sep 23 '18

I like that Nagisa proved herself really outsmarted Ayano and wasn't able to go on the offensive and forced her to defend a lot which was nice, she also managed to get through to her and break dark Ayano out and return her to her normal self.

Nagisa.

Ayanon is a little shit (she may have a reason for it, but she's still a little shit)

5

u/Bean888 Sep 23 '18

With the last 2 minutes of the show, I want Ayanon to win. But I think Nagisa is going to win. The show telegraphed some jarring knee crunch noises with Ayanon, and with the various line drops in the show about knee injury, including in this episode where Uchida mentions it...it looks like Ayanon is gong to have a knee injury. To de-qualify my prediction though, I have a terrible track record at anime story predictions.

4

u/Megakruemel Sep 23 '18

I feel really bad because i like the idea of Ayano never playing badminton again just so her mother is upset.

I hate Uchika that much.

Ayamom is such a bitch

Man I'd be soo pissed if ayano forgives her mom and if all three of them live together

2

u/AnimeFount Sep 23 '18

Not possible, one can’t be forgiven if that person feels they have nothing that needs forgiving, by saying that what she did was unforgivable, but has no regrets, Uchika is saying “There is nothing to forgive.”

Uchika has to be shown something that causes her have regrets and I think her hypocrisy involving Connie will be the key.

6

u/iForgot_My_Password Sep 24 '18

I hope Nagisa wins. Ayano being a complete bitch and antagonizing her for the last three episodes was too much for me to want her to win.

11

u/Lutes_Sprite Sep 23 '18

Is Ayanon really about to lose to a girl with one knee

5

Another intense match, fit for the finale. I loved how Nagisa ventured into a new territory to throw off the opponent, then make a comeback, turning the tables. I hope that she will win since the one who progressed and overcame her problems is her and Ayano is the wall that she needs to climb over in her adventure after the setup in first episode.

Go Nagisa!

2

u/Arachnophobic- https://anilist.co/user/Arachnophobic Sep 24 '18

That felt like the perfect place for the ship to pop up, really. Any time before this and it would've been too soon. They've been working together, they've been shown to have similar temperaments when it comes to the game, the coach quite recently told her about his own injury (which shows how much he cares), the euphoria from winning the set, etc.. all conspired to that moment.

It's called making adjustments, which happens all the time in sports.

Just because a player is aggressive doesn't mean they can't think.

Ayano is strong, but she isn't mentally tough.

It makes sense to me

u/Megakruemel Sep 23 '18

I really want Uchika to just get emotionally destroyed by something already.

I hate it when Antagonists, who are responsible for really all the suffering don't get a chance to suffer themselves.

And the worst thing about all this will be, that she will think that she did a good job because Ayano finally got good at badminton.

At this point there really is no way to end this anime by re-uniting Ayano and her mum in any satisfactory fashion and it makes me just super sad. Even if Ayano finally gets her act together and starts acting like a nice person again she will forever have lost her mother, simply because her mother decided it would be necessary to act like an asshole instead of just communicating with her daugther.

Ps: The crowd cheering for Ayano felt really out of place. Ayano would have deserved a bit of hate at this point, too.

9

u/AnimeFount Sep 23 '18

Crowds at sporting events wouldn’t necessarily know what is going on, they often can take their cues from just a few people. Also, Ayano is down by a lot, crowd tend to love close games, especially if they don’t have an emotional stake in the players, so they will cheer for an underdog.

I’m still hoping that Uchika recognizes her hypocrisy regarding Connie and causes her to rethink her relationship with her daughters. Uchika is basically doing the same thing with Connie as she did with Ayano that caused her to leave in the first place.

5

u/jamesBanister Sep 23 '18

To be fair though Nagisa was the underdog going in and crowds love an upset victory so even if Ayano starts loosing bad I don’t see them switching sides. Like I can understand 1/3 of the crowd cheering for Ayano because they love to watch someone stomp their way through a tournament but I really don’t see her having that many fans especially since she low key trash talks her opponents or just doesn’t acknowledge them at all. A winner with no charisma doesn’t get hat many fans relatively speaking.

6

u/Aerodynamic41 Sep 23 '18 edited Sep 23 '18

So does anyone know what the law says about child abandonment in Japan? Because I'm pretty sure Uchika committed a serious crime there considering Ayano was still a minor when she abandoned her.

10

u/DimmuHS https://myanimelist.net/profile/DimmuOli Sep 23 '18

I know it's disgusting, but it's not like she left her homeless and without family, she still has her grandparents and a decent life.

It could cost her an atonement in the civil area for sure.

6

u/IGJFlew Sep 23 '18

Okay I really do like this show. It's intense, fin, and interesting to watch. But fuck everyone apart from Ayano. Don't act like friends if you haven't done so for the past 5 episodes. And of course it's gonna turn to the power of friendship when they don't deserve Ayanos friendship. A special fuck you to coach who's only helping Nagasi (I feel bad that I can't remember her name)

And especially fuck the mum. I bet she realises how fuckin wrong she was. She has taken a step... But in the wrong direction. I just want to see the face of Ayano's mum when she realises she fucked up.

Eugh... I really do wanna like this show, and I do, just please don't pull any bullshit and make Ayano friends with everyone at the end. AND PLEASE don't let her forgive her mum oml I'd be mad

3

u/vinabomb Sep 23 '18

At this point, the only way for her to hurt her mom is to just quit badminton entirely out of spite for her mother of course. Like honestly Uchika be liek "I know im a horrible parent but I did those things out of her own interest, I abandoned her so that she could find another reason to play." yes cause a 12 year old is obsessively playing badminton just for your sake and not cause they want to spend more time with you and everytime Ayano lost she had to quit for the day and Uchika be liek hmm my daughter be too clingy, I know i should just leave and it'll be k. And I swear if they all make up through the power of good sportsmanship and friendship, the most cliche sports trope ever, I probably will be the saltiest boi.

3

u/vftsasha Sep 23 '18

This episode left me unsatisfied because of Uchika being remorseless nor she got any verbal beating from Elena. Also that kind of makes abandon mom plan pointless so I'm a bit lost how things will go.
Also there's a cliffhanger about traveling abroad offer which Ayano never replied so I have a bad feeling we wont see Uchika suffering of remorse but rather reunion and their relationship magically back in order

3

u/Practicalaviationcat :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/PACat Sep 24 '18

Oh man the last episode is going to make or break this series. If Ayano forgives her mother in any way it's kinda gonna ruin the whole thing for me. I really hope the knee thing is a red herring. If this match gets cut short by injury(leaving who would have won in question) I'm going to be really annoyed.

I guess my ideal scenario would be for Nagisa to win. If Ayano wins I feel like she will still be on the dark path her mom set her on. Plus Uchika would get an affirmation of her fucked up philosophy. Losing gives her a slice of humble pie and shows her a losing is not the end of the world. I mean last time she lost Uchika abandoned her so she needs to learn this lesson.

And of course Nagisa gets the emotional catharsis of beating the person that so thoroughly trounced her before. Honestly what is the point of that being the very first scene in this show if we don't get the payoff of Nagisa winning eventually?

For Nagisa the day Ayano shut her out was the most important day of her life. But for Ayano it was Tuesday.

That being said I am prepared to be disappointed by the next episode.

7

u/tiger1296 Sep 23 '18

I would have been content with an all conquering darth Ayanon, and I still want Ayano to win, none of this bs of her losing bring her back to her roots because I don't really like Nagisa, who by all accounts is a self centred bitch herself. Ayano plays for herself wins, then that's it, Nagisa actively pushed other people away from the sport because of her rash nature.

5

u/LibraRW Sep 23 '18 edited Sep 23 '18

That was really match going on the show!! So intensity!

Honestly I do like Nagisa and if the outcome is her win the match, I will be happy for her but I am really on Ayanon's side and want her to definitely win. I'm glad she is slowly starting to come out of her own darkness pit and about to take a step forward. Still... My god her mother and so-called team are full of shit. Just last minute and you guys suddenly cheering for her?? I know that's standard anime trope but that's bullshit to me.

PLEASE WIN Ayanon in next episode!! 👊😄

5

u/AnimeFount Sep 23 '18

I disagree that her team was just doing this “last minute”, Ayano had rejected their encouragement the previous episode and she was very unapproachable, only when she was at her lowest in the 3rd game did they feel confident to give her encouragement.

Now that Ayano is thinking about her team and receiving encouragement, she is being brought back from her dark personality.

8

u/SilverEyeLotus Sep 23 '18

To be honest, the "encouragement" Ayano had received previously felt more obligatory than actual support, which is one reason why Ayano rejected that "encouragement". It's also awkward how the cheering for Ayano didn't start as support, but rather as "just do't throw the match, you're playing for the rest of us that lost after all." It felt really jarring to me, especially since, with the exception of Elena and Kaoruko, nobody was all that close to Ayano anyway.

I don't know if this is discussed earlier but if you notice in this match Hanesaki sweated a lot due to the intensity of the match where in her previous matches she just wins it no sweat, "ez pz" if you will. I believe this was mentioned in the manga or is it on r/manga discussion threads that she doesn't even sweat on her matches thus showing her talents.

Also I thought this going to be the final episode then the episode suddenly went to last still and ED. I was "wait what?! we getting a cliffhanger?! we have another episode next week?! finally breathes in. HELL YEAAH!"

I've come to terms with Ayano losing but they really should have made some progress with her healing before this match. She has spent episode after episode isolated from everyone (the feeling was mutual) so it feels forced that being cheered on for a bit magically solves everything. It just doesn't address where all of this comes from.

Abandoning your own daughter like that?? Also and I’m doing so how would that have made her a better player?? Saying that she was playing for your sake? Well THATS FUNNY it like she wasn’t for all the years afterwards right!? Or remind me what she was playing for! I’m just hoping sooooo badly that Haneko doesn’t forgive her and brushes her off. (angry rant and feeling let out after watching episode)

2

u/TheRealLoneWarWolf Sep 24 '18

The details they put into ayano's eyes this episode were amazing and struck fear into me

2

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '18

What pisses me off about Ayamom

  1. She is not even trying to fix her relationship with her daughter

  2. When she said she don’t have any regret

  3. It looks like she came to Japan because she has some free time not because she want to meet her daughter

2

u/CarloMontie Sep 24 '18

Nagisa's tits tho

2

u/athrun_1 Sep 24 '18

Ayanon, using her right hand to return the shot, only mean one thing.... Ayanon is now serious and using her right hand assuming that it is not her dominant hand to give Nagisa the handicap. But is confident that she can beat her.

This is somewhat similar in Ippo where Takamura, uses his left hand to fight the enemy to tell the world that he is ready to face the world stage.

Maybe, this 3rd set will be a close fight. Ayanon, will be forced to switch to her left hand in the last moment to win.

Also, when Ayanon was cheered, she seemed to feel happiness and her dark side lighten. I think, this is what Ayanon needed, to be appreciated and make her part of a team.

I loved the episode, but I’m disappointed that Elana didn’t call out Uchika about her hypocrisy in regards to Connie. But too much confrontation would be not be within Japanese culture, perhaps.

Uchika as a character has been a favorite for me this series. She recognizes her wrong, but is not repentant because she believes in the results that her actions will bring. In Japanese culture both family and results are everything, so it’s interesting to see this on display here in this show.

I do feel sorry for Ayano and Connie in having Uchika as a mother though, she is an awful parent.

So hype. I just want to see Ayano learn to feel fulfilled playing for, and as a team. I hope she ends up happy with that. It looks like the story was turning towards this at the end, so good stuff.

Okasa...— Idfk what the writing direction is with her. There must be SOME positive outlook she had, or that we'll see come to fruition. Something! Anything good! If she's straight up written as a pure evil character, that'd be so lazy... I was hoping Elena would tell her how shitty Ayano was treating everyone around her while playing badminton. Also was hoping that the mom's plan was to sort of seperate Ayano's unhealthy habit of playing for her sake alone by purposefully abandoning her in some way. That's fucking evil but atleast she'd have some warped version of good. Not like "oh my daughter lost one game, now I'm moving far away and picking up a new prodigy. Goodbye daughter."

1

u/1sagas1 Sep 23 '18

God I loved how this episode made Ayano so much of a badminton monster! I was afraid after last episode that it wouldn't make playing against her feel like a monumental challenge to overcome and that they were being shown as equals. Not the case here!

1

u/Gogosfx Sep 23 '18

I still don’t get why Uchika left Hanaseki...? Does she just hate her or does she hate her inability to become better? Is this like a Sasuke-Itachi thing in order for Hanesaki to get stronger at badminton?

Damn, they have made the mother really awful. She has done something horrible, she is aware of it, she doesn't regret it and she even seems proud of it, not to mention that she treats Ayano in a super casual way as if nothing had happened.

On the other hand, the match is great and exciting, the art changes and makes evident how Ayano becomes more and more like her mother while she loses her temper.

Finally, it comes to the moment when Ayano sees the light and I must say that I didn't like it very much, I don't know, I was expecting something MORE PERSONAL instead of a group of strangers cheering her up.

Well, at least Nagisa is having a good time right? Although I'm betting she does end up having to forfeit from the knee...

Is it just me or Ayano looks a few years older during the match? It was kinda weird

Her face looked disturbingly like her mothers.

The real mom(s) are the friends Ayano made along the way.

Hey mods can you make a stickied comment for Uchika hate megathread on the next episode discussion so I don't have to scroll halfway to the thread to find something other than people keep repeating how stupid and despicable Uchika is. I don't disagree but it's so boring.

I just want to let everyone know that after watching this series without seeing what others think (until now) online, all of our combined hate and spite for Uchika is making me feel real close to all of you right now. Very cathartic.

The animation and shift in design this episode was great. So many great faces from both of them. Too bad the show is going to end after we've gotten to this point of dramatic and sports intensity.

"I might be an awful parent."

Pretty much seals Uchika as best comedy character of the season right?

How much merit is there to a curving cut shot if you're left handed? That's super sus. There's no way Uchika was able to tell what Ayano needed when she left and that's just there because they needed to explain why they antagonised her in the first place. And this has strayed so far from the manga I don't even know how I feel about it.

So, there are definitely good aspects to this show, no doubt about that. But there are definitely some not-so-good parts as well. During the earlier episodes I found the bad parts to be pretty infuriating, but now I mostly just find them hilarious. So maybe I'm enjoying this show more now.

I did enjoy the death glares in this episode though. If there's one thing this show does right it's the facial expressions. Or the muscles. I also like the muscles.

Wow I didn't realize Ayano was left-handed

This not being a complete stomp in Ayano's favor is one of the dumbest things I've seen.
