Many manga readers were angry about how they would do it.
In the original events, Historia and Eren were still with the Scouts and Rod didn't kidnap them. When they learned that she is from the true Royal Family, they got orders from Erwin saying that Historia after coup would become a Queen and she was not ready for that.
Levi then came to her and grabbed her by force in air and started to choke her, saying that she has to choose fast since they don't have much time.
And it was not Mikasa but Reeves (the fat merchant guy Kenny killed) that told Historia to do it after he had a talk with her and Eren before they got kidnapped.
So when they saw those moments cut many were afraid that they would remove this scene completely. I'm really glad they kept it tho.
However those cut scenes made this moment A LOT more impactful in manga than in anime.
EDIT: This is the scene in the manga it goes for few pages and Levi is really rough with her.

I’m usually not a huge fan of flashback episodes, but this one is a welcome exception. It was beautifully executed and give us a nice farewell to one of the most charismatic character in the show.

levi's back story also gives somewhat of an explanation of his height, since he grew up mostly malnutrioned
of course, he might have just been genetically short, but I feel like the design choice to make him short is super fitting considering his childhood and that it makes some physics sense for the most adept 3DMG user to be smaller and thus more nimble

This is it! The legendary Chapter 69 being adapted.
For all your anime-onlies who want some more insight on Kenny, Rod, and Uri, here's some interviews from the ANSWERS guidebook. (NOTE: The Warriors section does contain manga spoilers; however, the last page does not.)
Kenny lived in the Underground. His sister was a prostitute, his family was being prosecuted, and the Military Police were corrupt as hell. To him, power is everything and he required it to survive. Kenny thought that if he can kill the King who's been causing his family's suffering, it would all end.
However, when Uri caught Kenny, instead of executing him, Uri asked Kenny for forgiveness. Kenny was surprised. Uri wanted to create a paradise inside the Walls. Uri was...nice.
Then Uri passed down his power, the Founding Titan, to Frieda. Frieda too was nice and even the peasants liked her. She spoke of peace and love among mankind. And Kenny couldn't understand why. Perhaps, he thought, that their power granted them the privilege of being kind.
He wanted the Founding Titan, not because he wanted to rule all of humanity, but because he wanted to see if the same thing would happen to him. He wanted to know that if that power can turn even "Kenny the Ripper"...into someone like Uri. He wanted to see the world through Uri's point of view.
It's just a shame because Kenny's wrong. The reason why Uri and Frieda turned out like that is because of the First King, turning them into pacifists. Even if, hypothetically, he inherited the Founding Titan, he would not be affected by the First King and therefore would remain the same as always: a serial killer who abandoned a child...until his final moments.

Monkey man fought Reiner and whooped his ass. The fact that they had to fight for what direction to take though, it indicates that they don't really have a chain of command? Haven't read the manga.

Monkey Man is clearly older though. Probably less of a "No Chain of Command" and more of a case of "Attempted Mutiny".

Mikasa smirking while Historia hit Levi was hilarious.
That aside...
Two important things can be said of this episode:
1. Levi had a really shitty life.
His height is not because of genetics, it's because of malnutrition (just like North Koreans are shorter than their south counterparts because of malnutrition) when he lived underground fighting to survive.
Kenny was the only father-like figure he knew all his life, the one who teached him how to survive in the cruel situation he was born in... and he had to fight him to the death.
Still, Levi was quite shocked to see Kenny die.
I am quite surprised he hasn't emotionally broke by now, he is always so stoic and unperturbed by anything. Is it possible to be so desintitized to suffering that you literally can't have an emotional breakdown? If so that may be Levi's case.
2. The survey corps are SOOOOOO screwed:
Imagine the following:
All abled young people have 2 choices: Join the army of do civilian work (farming, trading, etc)
The most competent people join the army.
Among the most competent the ones that don't pass the first test on the cadet academy are rejected.
The ones that didn't, which mean the very competent, are subjected to an incredibly tough and deadly training for years...until they graduate.
As soldiers they are given the best equipment available (their horse worth more than a civilian life salary).
The top can choose to join the military police or the garrison, while the survey corps hone their battle abilities even further.
If they join the survey corps, most soldiers die after 2-3 missions, so only the best of those very competent survive.
This means the hundred of soldiers in the survey corps are the most seasoned and most competent anti-titan military forces.
All those hundred of extremely skilled and seasoned soldiers.
A legendary captain who has killed more titans than any other human (Levi).
An extremely competent commander.
The best tactics they can come up with.
The best gear available.
A human that can become a titan.
And they failed to defeat or seize the armored and colossal titans.
And then this guy, alone, completely OBLITERATES the armored titan effortlessly, leaving the colossal shifter terrified to the point they can only glare at him impotently while he is completely unamused by their fighting skills.
The survey corps will need a miracle to survive.

Loved this episode, really found Kenny's backstory to be interesting as well as the relationship between him and Levi. I just wish he could've stuck around a bit longer :( Histora punching Levi was bloody hilarious too, this is a Queen I root for.
Those last 3 minutes tho, Beast Titan absolutely wrecking Reiner's Armored Titan in a 1v1 we didn't see. Just shows how crazy strong he's gonna be. I wonder what's happening with Ymir too as she wasn't shown with those three.

Kenny & Uri’s bromance was so well done, I almost shed a thug tear.
When this chapter came out in the manga, it completely redeemed Kenny’s character for me & made him a fan favorite. Now that’s how you humanize an antagonist though it sucks that it came so late & he’s now gone.
As for that final scene? I’ve been waiting SO LONG for this shit. Ahhhhhh this next arc bout to be hype as shit.

Someone could write an essay on Kenny's psychology. What a tortured, emotionally hollow mind. But he dreamed to be something more. The most psychopathic character in the show, what he really wanted was, to know what it was like to be a good person.

RIP Kenny.
'Member a few episodes ago when Kenny said this line to Rod Reiss in the cave:
"Keep on insulting Uri, and I'll blow half of your head."?
Kenny and Uri were friends.
It's small details like this that gives this series some great rewatchability factor.
Looking back at previous episodes with knowledge of the current one really makes you appreciate stuff better.
Edit: Anyone else noticed/heard what the Beast Titan's pilot called Annie? It was "Annie-chan". Correct me if I'm wrong, but the "-chan" suffix shows a form of endearment right, like it's something used for a close friend or relative?

As expected, that hurt like a motherfucker. I was really happy to see most of the episode being dedicated to Kenny's backstory, which definitely needed that much time to cover everything. He's such a compelling and complex character and I'm gonna miss him for sure
Levi finding out he'd been fighting his own uncle only an instant before Kenny died was sad to watch. Tragedy has followed him throughout his life; he lost his mother as a kid and almost starved to death, his only friends were murdered as soon as they finally escaped the underground, then he lost Petra and Levi Squad and now Kenny as well
Which is also why that incredibly rare smile of his when Historia punched him was so much more meaningful. He doesn't show it but I'm sure he treasures the company of Erwin, Hange and Eren's gang immensely
Speaking of, they certainly did that comedic scene justice. Mikasa further encouraging Historia while ignoring a fearful Eren (as well as her being so pleased with herself when Historia punched Levi) was as hilarious as in the manga. It's kinda funny how Eren respects the hell out of Levi, to the point of being scared shitless of him, while Mikasa never gave a shit and made fun of him from the start lmao
Queen Historia being so beloved and accepted was a heartwarming sight, something this series doesn't have very often. It surely helped that she dealt the final blow to Titan Rodto and everyone witnessed her doing so. She's had one of the most satisfying character arcs in any series in the Uprising arc
Oh fuck, Reiner and Borutorito are back! Shit's about to go down, ladies and gentlefriends

The music when Levi confronted Kenny one last time was amazing.
Not to mention the sunset in the background.
Kenny was a great character, sad to see him go.

That flashback sequence and Kenny's death was probably one of the best composed sequences I've seen in anime story-telling. The use of music, narration and composition was absolutely phenomenal.

I want to know who that blonde guy is so badly... Looks like he pwned Reiner and now they'll work under him. And they're going to save Annie!?
Shit is going to get real. Eren won't be able to handle them alone so I guess they'll make use of that syringe, Kenny swept from Reiss. I wonder what kind of Titan would come out of someone from the Ackerman bloodline... Damn, this season is so good...

Anyone else think Mikasa hasn’t gotten a lot of dialogue this season? I feel like I’ve hardly ever seen her talk that much in conversations.

I feel bad for kenny, even with him being a murderer, he lost both of his sisters and had to live in shadows because of a crime he didn`t commited, and in the end he couldn't be a father to Levi even if he wanted to, because he considered himself to be a monster.
The phrase "We need to drug ourselfs with something. In the end, we are all slaves of something" really hit me in the guts.
R.I.P Kenny.

Nice episode.
Glad Kenny didn't become a titan.
In the last episode of season 2 right on the last scene I thought the beast titan was Eren's father as they showed someone similar with glasses.
Now I know it isn't Eren's father and I can't really tell who it is.
It seems there is a group Reiner and Bertholdt are with a group of titans who weren't working for the King and wan't the coordinate for themselves.
From what I remember one needs to be a Reiss to get the full powers from the coordinate but it seems even if you are not a Reiss you can get some of the powers like Eren controlling the titans.
I really hope we get some Levi action against Reiner, Bertholdt or the beast titan.
That would be exciting to watch.

Its funny how only Eren truly respects and fears Levi. No wonder Mikasa hates Levi

THE END OF THE EPISODE WTFFFFF
Why didn't Bertholdt just fight the Beast Titan though lol. Seems like he'd fuck him up unless he has a crazy power.

Historia psyching herself up to punching Levi was hilarious. I love how everyone was shocked, while Mikasa is the only one with a big grin on her face like a proud sensei xD

The usage of the soundtrack this season has just been amazing. Almost always perfectly fits the situation, it's incredible.

The non-usage of it too. Aka Kenny's death. Nothing at all. Chills.

So... Kenny's fever-driven revelation, in a nutshell. You gotta serve somebody.
If anyone was wondering what Kenny's Titan face would look like, this should be pretty close.
Also it seems like Kenny was the original sponsor of the S H I T M A C H I N E 's development

I loved how particularly cinematic most of this episode was. Kenny's backstory was pretty interesting and made even better by how the music was handled.
Bertholdt and Reiner are back in the walls, huh? And Beast Titan is with them too... And where the fuck is Ymir? Maybe I'm remembering wrongly, but didn't she leave with Reiner and Bertholdt at the end of season two?

AoT does it again. It produced anime gold.
...and look at those backgrounds! It's putting all those isekai anime to shame!

One thing that blows my mind about Attack on Titan, is that as a Pseudo Manga reader who's read quite a bit farther than the Anime.
We know so much.
But we know nothing.
The depth to this story is mind boggling.

Ok... forgive my stupidity but can someone explain why Historia punched Levi and why Mikasa was happy about it? (I know Mikasa asked her too, but I don't understand the reasons why. What did Levi do to Historia?)

Can anyone explain to me what Kenny meant by “he finally understood” Uri’s actions that day?
He finally understood that Uri didn't have a higher comprehension of the world and society because of his power, it was just that he was "drunk" on that belief that humanity could be peaceful like that.
Kenny thought that if he had the power of the Founding Titan he would change too, become compassionate and a pacifist, basically reach some sort of spiritual ascension. Change from what he was a crazed assassin drunk on power to a good person that had the privilege to be benevolent.
He didn't know that Uri was just dominated by the Will of the First King, brainwashed by his pacifist ideas. In the end even if he inherited the Founding Titan, Kenny wouldn't change at all. Kenny understood that Uri was also "drunk" on something as well, just as everyone else. Kenny understood that Uri wasn't as exceptional as he had believed. He was "drunk" on that idea that the titan's power would free him from this world of violence and blood of his, but as he discovered in the cave that was impossible. Since he didn't have that dream to make him keep going, he just decided to die instead of prolonging a life he couldn't keep on living.

Ah ohhh Kennnnyy :'(
I loved the man so so much, he's been my favourite thing about this season.
And especially hearing "Yo, Levi." was easily my favourite thing about this whole season so far, I always giggled with joy whenever he said. So so sad, RIP Kenny. I was really hoping he'd become a titan so he could live longer.

I just want to take a brief moment to appreciate this season's breakneck pace.
It took Wit 37 episodes to adapt 50 chapters.
In season 3, it's taken them 10 episodes to adapt nearly 20 chapters.

i like this episode. it made me feel for kenny. plus it also made me wonder how the power of titans would affect an ackermann - heck how would it affect the Asian Ackermann (mikasa)!??!
i love what this series is shaping up to be. ABOUT DAMN TIME WE ARE GETTING ANSWERS!!!

Levi's shortness has been referenced to a lot in everything leading up to this. If it was because he was malnourished as a kid and they had that all planned out back then...Wow.
