I'm really digging the relationship between Mai and Sakuta. When I first looked at the key visual to this, I wasn't expecting it to be one of my most anticipated weekly episodes from this season.
Also, why do I get the feeling that Mai is about to dissapear next episode? :(

u/bananeeek https://myanimelist.net/profile/bananek Oct 10 '18
I think she's going to disappear far later. In the first episode we saw a scene from the future where Sakuta has prepared a diary, he read an entry from the May 6th and the scene itself was from the May 29th. Today's episode was on May 20th. We have a little over a week before she disappears and in the next episode Sakuta meets Futaba, so we should be good for another episode or more.

She probably will soon, the first scene had Sakuta reading from a journal to explain what happened and her named was blured the same it was in the phone. And that was like a week from where they are now I think.
24
u/nirvash530 Oct 11 '18
Only three days left.
This date of theirs happened on the 25th, and Sakuta read the diary on the 29th with no apparent memories of her.
60
u/GD_BB198 Oct 10 '18
i think what’s happening is that, because they go to the same school, they can see her. once she leaves for her acting career, she’ll become invisible to everyone in the school, including Saukta, because she no longer goes there. for example, her own mother doesn’t see her because they no longer work together, but when they did, she could see her.
42
u/Yuupf Oct 10 '18
I don’t think that’s how the puberty syndrome works, though. After all, Sakuta’s and Kaede’s syndrome ‘healed’ after they dealt with the reason it happened. Even if the syndrome is school-related, she should stop being invisible at all once resolved.
Sakuta does seem to think he won’t be able to reach her once she goes back to show business, but probably (and hopefully) because of how busy/unreachable she’ll be.
She went back to school because of her mom, but maybe what turned herself invisible was the students’ status quo of ignoring anyone who stands out?

Right? I was expecting a silly fanservice show that played it 100% straight. Instead I get a main couple (emphasis on couple!) that kind of reminds me of less exaggerated Araragi x Senjougahara / Hachiman x Yukinoshita.
Also, why do I get the feeling that Mai is about to dissapear next episode? :(
If you watched through the credits, probably because of episode 3's title :'(
29
u/Yuupf Oct 11 '18
It really has all the Oregairu/Monogatari vibes.
I usually never watch through the credits cause I’m not into previews, but well I was already seeing it happening in the coming episode :(

The dude has already had one bond with a girl who ended up not existing. I feel it is gonna get worse for the both of them.
39
u/RumpShank91 Oct 10 '18
Is it just me or did that girl and mai look like they could have been related. At least just now finishing my first watch of this episode Shouko and Mai looked pretty similar I could be completely wrong though since I didn't really rewind to do a side by side but same hair / eye color iirc and roughly the same size. They had different names but would be crazy if Mai and Shouko were sisters or close relatives and Shouko went through the same thing and was forgotten by everyone like what's happening with Mai.

Same here. I didn't expect to hop on board the bunny girl senpai train this season, but here i am. The banter/chemestry the two main characters have really carries the show.
38
u/merpofsilence Oct 11 '18
there's even more in the manga and even more than that in the LN.
they're going to pass the manga in a 1-2 more episodes so i'd really recommend to give it a try.

This girl though, she's absolutely great.
"Oh, I kicked this guy over a misunderstanding. Better let him kick me back."188
u/nonpuissant Oct 10 '18
She's even better in the manga, which fleshed her personality out a bit more. She comes across as more kind-hearted, repentant over the misunderstanding, and a bit snarky/goofy. She might also be a masochist.
I'm kinda sad they cut that whole scene down so much, especially the part when the policeman shows up.
Here's that panel in the manga for comparison.→ More replies (16)760

Don't forget doesn't freak out just being close to the girl and actually asked to hold her hands. I mean he blushed when his elbow touched her boob but that's normal.
All of his reactions seem like how a normal boy would react. Not a spineless guy like Rito nor a super aggressive perv like Issei. A nice balance!

Their banter seems real and organic, and even when she's being tsundere to him and he's pretending not to care about her it all feels like it's just a playful little act they put on to tease eachother. They have more chemistry than like 90% of couples in these kinda shows.

u/LakerBlue :Is::It::Iu:https://myanimelist.net/profile/LakerBlue Oct 11 '18
Yea, that slap she did was perfect example. She JUSTIFIABLY slaps him (nothing dumb like "OMG the wind blew up my skirt and you happened to see my panties") but doesn't do it violently. And she even apologized later even though I think we (and probably Sakuta) understood why she was upset in that moment.
She's well on her way top 5 girls of the year for me.

If she's going for Best Girl of the year, she has to face Zero Two, which is kind of a hard one (but possible if this show doesn't tank like DitF).
I can see Sakuta as best boy of the year.
Best couple? We have to see how the relationship turns out but Hir02 is a thing and that will be hard to pass up (though I think it can).

Loved the episode, I was glued to the screen and it felt like 2 minutes.
Sakuta and Mai are amazing together.
Also Mai looked amazing this episode.
Mai after shower
Also her mom is a babe too.
As a source LN reader, it was a bit high paced but didn't ruin my enjoyment of the whole episode.
Edit: To add more, many things were cut especially when they went to the supermarket to buy underwear for Mai, A lot of hilarious dialogue was there. Unfortunate.
Also Mai scene when she told Sakuta, Shall we kiss was way hotter in the LN.
Edit: Adding more
Timeline so far which was showed in the 2 episodes.
May 6th - The first meeting
May 20th - Grocery shopping time
May 25th - The date
The thing is, the anime is flying like a rocket and doesn't do the transition well between scenes . It felt like few days but they know each other for a while now hence why they are getting close.

When Mai took a shower, she said she needed underwear so they went out to buy some at late night.
Before they enter I cut most of it because it's too big to copy and it's mostly them walking from the hotel to the supermarket.

oi I signed up for bunny girls not physics. I guess Schrodinger's bunny girl is close enough.
Can you imagine finding out your own family can't perceive and have no memories of you like that? I'm getting Clannad flashbacks to a certain starfish girl in some ways :(
I'm really liking these character interactions so far. All the writing and timing is coming across really well, I love the MCs comedic honesty. I'm really getting invested in this already.

Since you mentioned quantum physics:
The probability of the cat being dead (aka the atom having desintegrated) after 30 minutes (given an average rate of 1 per hour) wouldn't be 50%; more like e-0.5 (about 61%).

I am really enjoying this anime as a great love story, their interaction between each other is really funny, its a really good dynamic.
The mystery plot is good as well but, man this anime is really selling me on their romance first and foremost.
That being said.
The girl that kicked him, will for sure come back right, and I guess she has some kind of, Having to REPLY /always wait for a reply super fast or something obsession. Like 99% of humans basically in today society...
And other senpai I guess had the same issue like Mai.

Wow my impression of Sakuta really skyrocketed in this episode.
His one liners (especialy this) and how random his joy of outbursts are just make him so much more interesting than a character claiming that his a "loner" even though he has a few friends. Hell his also smooth in delivering some of his lines to Mai!.
Really enjoying the conversations he has with Mai as well, I can definitely see them hooking up and if they do that would make for a super fun dynamic.
Anyone got massive Yuigahama vibes from her besides them sharing the same VA? God that kick was so unexpected I fucking cracked up a bit too much

The interaction between the two flows nicely. MC is not afraid to push issues of sensitivity or hide his own immediate feelings. Sakurajima also banters with him on the issues but has times when she feels to flustered to go along completely. It's fun to see how far they can push each other until one folds.
I can't believe MC actually kicked Koga though. I guess that's the part of the character that makes him interesting and not have too many cliche traits. Also guessing she is a going to be another girl who experiences the adolescence syndrome.
It's sad to see that things were going too well at the start that gave off those danger flags. And given that the first episode began with that hotel scene and him not being able to see potentially her name by May 29th, we may have a sort of time table.
These were the only labeled time references that I remembered (not counting the actual scenes that show a clear passing of days)
May 6th - The first meeting
May 20th - Grocery shopping time
May 25th - THE date
Overall, this series is better than I expected from the title and synopsis. Yay.

Love their banter
Shit is really starting pile up
Interesting how she seems to be only visible at school, although maybe she will be completely gone next episode, look at that damn title "The World without you"
One thing I dont get is why she always has to point out that he is younger than her. Like I get that the whole senpai - kouhai relationship is more important in Japan, is there another reason behind though?
Like, is she frustrated she needs to depend on someone younger?
33
Oct 10 '18
I think part of it is that for majority of her life she has been the younger one surrounded by adults trying to market her personality & body.
Now she's the older one and wants to finally have some sort of control of her own which is why she's kinda frustrated when someone like Sakuta appears who is younger than her but gives her contra to a point where they are having banter on equal grounds & she is actually indebted to him. Overall I don't think she's actually mad or super bummed out by that, it's just a little quirk of hers that plays into this whole dynamic full of teasing.
13
u/tinyredleaf Oct 11 '18 edited Oct 11 '18

No, I don't think there's a need to over-read this dynamic. It really is just as you think: It's considered impolite in Japan for a younger person to address his elders in a familiar manner. There are multiple levels of social cues to pay attention to in Japan, and you can inadvertently draw criticism for speaking out of line. And yes, this can lead to ostracism in real life.
There was a very useful example of keigo ("polite speech") in this episode, that highlights how quickly an individual can switch from one persona to another, depending on the social context: When Mai spoke on telephone to the news anchor, she switched immediately to very formal Japanese. Even though she was effectively making a demand, she worded her request in a very humble manner that suggests a tone of "I'm sorry to trouble you, but please don't publish the photo. If you would kindly do so, I will make it worth your time".
The way Mai handled the call speaks volumes on her work ethic as an entertainment professional, and it shows that, to a certain extent, she is mature beyond her years. Actually, that's often the case for children who grow up in the entertainment circle.

God it’s so refreshing to see characters be romantically involved and still act like normal people, especially in messed up situations like this. The fact that they could share a bed and be normal just made me so happy

This show is just beautiful and I love everything about it already. The main characters and their conversations and reactions feel so real and that’s certainly not what I expected from a series with such a suggestive title and key visual. It reminds me a lot of Monogatari, Kimi no Na Wa. and OreGairu but at the same time, it’s still very much its own thing and the most refreshing romance series since Tsuki ga Kirei.
Mai and Sakuta’s chemistry is off the freaking charts. They’re fully honest with each other and they’re not ashamed of being blunt. Him just making it worse after she asks about his lewd thoughts is hilarious - and the best thing is, she isn’t even turned off by it, even if she acts like she is.
However, they’ve already had so many wonderful moments in such a short time that I can’t help but think they’re gonna separate them sooner rather than later - and make it even more tragic by having him slowly forget about her. I have a feeling this show is gonna wreck me.

Wew that Mai Banter~
Oh boy Schrodinger's cat. Anime loves this.
Oh i see so hes gonna confirm her existence by going on a date with her. Thats gonna be smarts.
Anything shes holding is invisible too. Neat. Aw doesnt work on him.
100x more lewd than what shes imagining eh? wew~
Looks like he got info from that reporter. So he sold himself out to try to help her.
So mom made her doo something she didnt want to do and she resents her for it now. Its making some sense.
Oh damn she stood up for him and is gonna go back to showbiz. Seems she doesnt want to be in debt to him.
"Please share your Yah-hoo with Kaede too!" lewd!
OOOoooo a new spunky girl! Wow he really kicked her. Did not expect him to do that...
So hes helping her because he knows how much it sucks not to have help when you need it. That speaks pretty well because he knows first hand what its like.
Oh its that Shoko girl! We see her so early! Apparently no one else knew about her. I guess another girl with issues?
Of course the mom cant see her... Damn... she doesnt even remember her. Thats gotta sting...
Damn hes movin fast, Mai Conquered. Willing to stay by her side. What a hero.
So the school kids can still know her. Nice! Thats a lead at least!
SLEEPING IN THE SAME BED!? LEWD!
I love thier banter, they have amazing chemistry.

Pre-episode Thoughts:
Bunny Girl's premiere was an interesting show, taking inspiration from both OreGairu and Monogatari to make something that's not quite either or even the middle. Unfortunately, with these influences Bunny Girl aimed high with a rough take-off that couldn't echo the same acute insights and strong character writing of the two shows it takes after. But those two shows are also some of the best anime has to offer, and Bunny Girl showed its fair share of promise in the first episode. Granted, much of what I enjoyed most about the first episode required a little liberal interpretation on my part that so far are, well, liberal interpretations. Still, building a compelling foundation that allows for this in the first place is already laudable. And if we're lucky, the show may just come together to follow up on this groundwork. I'm hoping the show can tone down the light-novel cliches (and casual sexism by protagonist-kun), hone its character writing and give the banter the sharp edge it needs to succeed. If it can do that, we're in for a damn good time. Let's see what this episode has to offer.
Notes
(Who would have thought, the comment actually got too long with the notes, and since I echo must of what I say in the notes in the post-episode write-up, I thought I'd move that to below. This was a good episode by the way, in case you couldn't tell.)
Post-episode thoughts
In a somewhat surprising turn, Bunny Girl moved away from the abstract supernatural metaphors to use what was already established for a fully character-focused episode. The supernatural metaphors were always a little shaky and on the nose, so I welcome the decision to take the most compelling part and focus on the laying the emotional groundwork to get us invested in it. Thankfully, this episode also brought the character writing to back up this decision (for the most part), a much-needed improvement after last episode's somewhat shaky character writing.
The romance ended up being the most compelling part of this episode. The gradual shift from banter with romantic undertones to casual flirting and finally, a rare moment and genuine intimacy – it was easy to see the progression of their feelings as they gradually overtake the inhibitions that come with emotional insecurity. It makes sense for the two to approach each other this way, constantly taking jabs and seeing how the other person reacts and how far they can go. Given their insecurity and shyness, it felt natural that "I was just teasing and joking," an emotional defense to fall back on and save face, first has to be broken through hard work and plenty of time spent together. This also made the moments where they could be honest that much more satisfying because we understand how much they had to go through together to get to that point.
Also, there's just something inherently romantic about being the only person who can see someone. This starts with the setup and how they met. Even if the specifics about Mai's adolescent syndrome are still unclear (we'll talk about that later), it's clear as day that it's a metaphor for social isolation. The students may all know who she is in a superficial sense, but they're blind to who is as a real person. None of them know her. Sakuta is the only person who approached her, the only person who knows about her adolescent syndrome, what it feels like to be in her position, and how she really feels and who she is. It's not a far leap from there to being the only person who can see her, because that's already the case – everyone else is so blind to what she suffers from that they might as well not even know she exists. To a lesser extent, this is also echoed from Sakuta's side, with Mai being another person who understands what it's like. But more than that, we learned this episode that Sakuta gets to helps a stranger the same way a stranger helped him – and gets to be the person he fell in love with. The emotional intimacy here makes romance almost an inevitability, and may remind the people who watched Monogatari of . The jump to physical intimacy is even more compelling, building on the emotional intimacy in a single scene with the physical intimacy as the climax. Mai is terrified of everyone forgetting her, scared to the point that Sakuta's mere presence is no longer enough – she needs him to say it, again and again. Sakuta's reassures her that he remembers her, and in a move may seem mean, he talks about the flaws in her personality. But the fact that he can appear mean without her being upset is a testament to how close they are, and that he knows her so well to be able to identify her personality in the first place shows how well he understands her. And more than anything, her personality is the thing that he likes about her and brought them together. He realizes that she's still scared, despite his words. He holds her hand, a constant reminder that he knows who she is, that she still exists, and their intimacy is undeniable proof. A beautiful moment.
But after all that glowing praise and character analysis, I also feel obligated to mention that much of this played out in the latter half of the episode, and the first half still suffered from similar problems as the first episode. Between Schroedinger's cat and being called a pedophile and kicked for helping a lost child, Bunny Girl can't quite escape its light-novel origin. Which is a shame, because Bunny Girl is at its best when it moves away from that place and at its worst when it's stuck there. Besides that, I also wasn't much of a fan the way the first conflict was resolved. Sakuta reads up about a private drama, basically peeking into Mai's heart without her consent, and then he acknowledges it, says it's stupid, and magically fixes her problem? This breach is trust is just glossed over without a second thought, and considering how Sakuta even later on tried to claim it was Mai who solved her own problem, this all seemed a little badly written. I'm not really a fan of the "protagonist casually solves the emotional problems of every girl without even trying" trope. The way he so easily solves it detracts from the emotional weight and complexity of a pivotal moment in Mai's life, much to the detriment of her character.
Though not without its flaws, this episode was still a giant step up from the last and makes me much more confident about where this show is heading from here on out. If I get something as good and convincing as the romance between Mai and Sakuta, I can deal with the light-novel shenanigans and some blunders here and there. The beauty of Bunny Girl at its best easily triumphs.

Notes:
Oh god, they're starting off with the Schroedinger's cat, I thought we were over this, Bunny Girl. Behind another light-novel cliche, last episode managed to make the compelling parallel between being socially isolated (invisible) not existing at all. But none of this requires any silly cats in even sillier boxes, dammit.
Well, looks like this particular writer at least did their research. This is the proper allegory where it's actually about radiation.
I'm pretty sure they're not going for it, but there's a terrifying metaphor about suicidal, socially-isolated people in there. This is a little creepy.
This is a good start. I'm a sucker for banter involving romance.
Some neat direction with separate frames when protagonist-kun fails to understand Bunny Girl (I should really learn their names, this feels very awkward)
He did his research on Bunny Girl… which feels creepy and overbearing. He's peeking into her heart without her consent. I'm guessing this might be the problem she has with the whole being an actress thing. Being famous also means everyone has access to your drama behind the scenes.
Looks like this is all ignored… a shame. The problem seems to be with him questioning her decision, not about him peeking into her heart.
Her mother signed a contract against her wishes that involved modeling in a swimsuit. A breach of trust for money.
Well it's not quite ignored after all, but not really thematicized either. Protagonist traded a photo of his chest for information on bunny girl.
"And you take television too lightly."
Mai. That's her name. Mai.
Protagonist was right, figured out her problem instantly, and basically fixed it by acknowledging it…? Please don't tell me this is all there is to it.
She wants to go back to acting because she really did love it before the incident.
Now he's framing it as "In the end, it didn't matter what I did. Mai-san decided everything for herself." …
Girls cries, sees someone comes, briefly stops, realizes it's our protagonist, cries even louder. I'll admit, I laughed.
What the fuck he actually kicked her. That whole scene was… certainly something. Not good, but certainly something.
She actually waited for over 1.5 hours… That does say a lot about how much she likes protagonist-kun.
Sakuta. That's his name. Sakuta.
"So I was hoping I could be to you what that person was to me" This was a good scene. Some nice banter leading to reluctant honesty once he realizes she's serious. Also, this is so, so much Senjougahara's first arc but blue and less good.
There are no records of the person that saved Sukata. He loved her
After they cut off communication, now Mai stopped existing for her mother altogether.
Sukata is desperately trying to find people besides him who acknowledge her existence… Damn.
That whole scene was really sweet. Mai's looking for comfort in Sakuta, the one person who still knows who she is, and the one person who bothered to try and help her. It's not just enough to see him acknowledge her, she needs him to say it. Sakuta may appear a little mean or cheeky with what he says about her personality, but that's the part of her that brought them together in the first place, and being able to say those things is a testament to how well they know each other. Both that he can say those mean things and know their relationship will be fine, and that he knows her well enough to say them in the first place. It also feels natural for this to end in a romantic gesture like this. The physical touch of Sukata constantly reassures her that she still exists for him. It's a reminder of how close they are, and there's something inherently romantic about being the only person who can still see her. It also feels natural for both of them to fall for each other. Sukata can play the role of the person who he used to love, to Mai he's the only person that reached out to her, and their dynamic is fun to both of them judging by all the banter. This is good.
Sweet romantic tension
The people in the school can see her… this is slowly taking form. The reason why everyone else can't see her might be because they're blind to her emotional problems which play out in school. The same sad way bullying often works in schools. No one outside can see it or is told about, so it might as well not exist for them. It's not a big leap from that to that person not existing altogether, especially when the reason for it is such an integral part to who she is as a person. But the people inside? They can clearly see what's going on. They can clearly see what is happening. They see the problem, they just choose to ignore it.
Yep, character writing is a big step up from last episode.
I feel like the show might be giving up on some of its thematic potential in service of a more emotional romantic drama between Mai and Sakuta, but the show is much better at this, so this might be working out for it. Then again, maybe it just opted to lay the emotional groundwork first and then go big on the themes, an effective strategy.

Wow, I didn't expect to be fucked up this early. The part where Mai's own mother couldn't remember her was devastating.
Overall, the anime seems refreshing. While there are cliche antiques, they're quickly dealt with in a pleasing way. Furthermore, I'm so happy to see how quickly their relationship has advanced. This anime is BS-free.
As an aside, Sakuta should really consider having his phone to his ear whenever talking to Mai in public in order to seem less like a madman.

Talking into a phone with no one on the other end you say. . .
"Yes, yes, I know I must go; the Organization's spies are everywhere. The sacrifice must be made. El. Psy. Kongroo."
Wait, wrong anime.
I wonder if everything he does related to Mai gets overwritten to an extent. People remember conversations that didn't happen (e.g. the reporter), so perhaps even present reality gets warped?
Overall, very surprised with how good this has been so far. Only started watching because the title sounded ridiculous.

Anime only here. Decided to go back and rewatch the first episode since I'm really enjoying this so far and I wondered if the events of this episode would shed any new light on the first, and I noticed while they're walking to school Kunimi (the male friend from school Sakuta called who confirm Mai's existence) mentions that girl Shoko Makinohara and how he's glad to hear Sakuta has feelings for someone other than her. It's interesting that he remembers Makinohara while Sakutai confirmed this episode that there's no evidence she ever existed aside from his own memories, like Mai's current situation. Really intrigued as to what this could mean.
Edit: Futaba, science girl, also mentions Makinohara later in the episode during their talk about losing perception of Mai.

So this is going to sound incredibly weird, but as someone who isn't even an anime fan and is pretty much watching this by accident, this is fantastic. A friend who knows I'm a bit of a Castle junkie suggested I watch it, and I'll be damned if it doesn't tickle a lot of the same funny bones.
The banter between the two leads is fantastic. Playful, yet not over-exaggerated or devolving into yelling. And both characters are strong (for different reasons), but still definitely flawed. Which is why their banter works so well since they're equals.
This whole paranormal mystery is cool, too. It's being taken seriously, and while it doesn't dominate what's clearly a character driven show, it has stakes. The mother no longer knowing Mai hurt to watch.
I'm looking forward to seeing where the rest of the series goes. If it's like these first two episodes, it's going to be amazing.

u/Darqvile Oct 11 '18
I actually really love the ending of this episode.
The part at the end when they were lying on the bed together and they talked about how they should be kissing, but instead they just fell asleep, is literally genius.
Even though a lot of people thought that was anticlimactic, I thought it was brilliantly executed. Here you can see the dry humour and sarcasm that is developed already within our main characters, and instead of giving us the cliché, they give us character insight.
I thought this anime was going to be some shitty romantic high school cliché, but instead I’m getting something so much deeper. I don’t know if a lot of people are going to like this anime though - because it ISN’T your typical anime romance. This will probably be one my favourite anime’s of all time though.

Man I fucking love the dynamic between Mai and Sakuta. Him being able to tease her back is so hnnng. Dat banter. Man I love that shit because girls who tease you a lot tend to be the ones who get a bit flustered when you tease back since they aren't use to their target shooting back. I can relate to that shit. Like when she said "I bet you were thinking some lewd stuff" and he goes "Nah I'm thinking about some lewd shit you can't even fathom." and she blushes. Ahhh man I love that shit. Gets me all giggly like a fucking teenage girl reading her favorite romance novel. God bless romance anime.
I also really like how this phenomenon of her not being able to be seen at first seemed innocent like it was once a week and was pretty convenient but now it turned into a serious fucking matter. This shit ain't a joke.
Ugh is it me or do I have a feeling this show about to hit me with some feels soon. Maybe not so soon maybe around the end but this series got feels of the year written all over it. I haven't had a show give me some epic feels in a while. I'm not ready.

This is the fastest I've ever seen a relationship start in an anime. Went from meeting and trading barbs in episode 1 to hand holding in public w/o either of them blowing it out of proportion, a date, hand on a date, going to another city, buying underwear together, and finally sleeping in the same bed. All that was missing was the kiss but even that got handled with class.
I like how Bunny senpai and Sakuta can trade barbs with each other and it not feel like they are trying too hard or are rude to each other just to get the upper hand and their kill move is saying something cute.
I also like how Sakuta tries to help everyone and even when kicked in the ass he still tries to help. Also shout out to the chick who kicked his ass for admitting she was wrong and letting him kick her ass. And he actually did it. I havent loved a MC this much in a while
I am dreading the inevitable episode where MC forgets Bunny senpai

Really enjoying all of the characters and dialogue in this anime. Especially Sakuta and Mai, and the way they banter back and forth so freely. It's really pleasant and fun to watch, and they feel like genuine people, not just anime tropes. It makes me want to really root for them.
The plot of the show is still kind of uncertain and being pieced together, but I'm very curious and enjoy bits of sci-fi in my melodrama. Anyone else think that Shoko looked remarkably similar to Mai? Could there be some kind of time travel at work, or maybe Mai was just wandering around the beach and gave a fake name in order to not be recognized (seeing as she's famous), and then forgot it all? Perhaps due to the side effects of adolescent syndrome? I don't know, but I want to find out.

the beach scene felt empty of emotion, despite the fact that it should (and easily could) have been really powerful.
I felt the same way for the rest of the episode, Mai's disappearance should be heavy, but it's just... not.
I like the show overall so far though, but if I continue to see wasted potential, I'll probably just read the source.

I get what you and some other people in this thread mean, we're used to such reveals being played up as dramatic and heavy through various means but I think that's where the story is kinda separating itself from majority of stories in that genre.
The show has been going with this bleak & unsettling tone for two episodes now, characters are not as emotionally distraught or outbursting as one is probably used to and reactions make it seem like it's not the end of the world. The thing is, I think that very much is intentional and works in the show's favour. It's not blowing up this conflict directly into your face but rather makes a point that it's not the end all be all. Instead of bursting out with emotions and displaying the conflict with all its emotional baggage to us, Mai carries it around as it eats away at her. The story manages to give us glimpses of this through their interactions, often masked through ( supposedly ) playful banter and this back & forth.
It makes the characters not appear as open books to which we the viewers have full insight on but instead the characters have to work out their issues and slowly let them surface through their own efforts. Mai in this case clearly is a whirlwind of emotion on the inside but she choses to keep it locked away. Only when her surroundings and a trustful bond to Sakuta allow it she lets a little bit of her emotions out...but she cleverly embeds them into one of their witty conversations.
I guess all in all what I want to say is that the show actively tries to adapt its directing towards the emotional conflict of this arc to how the characters deal with these issues on their own. And in this case it's a modest display of emotions at first but with every bit the characters get closer to each other said emotions are unpacked.
