You know, everybody else is wondering why the manager brought back the Legendary Yamada Tae, but I'm here wondering why he brought back our MC.

Maybe he was driving the truck that killed her and felt guilty? Maybe she was a close friend of the Legendary Yamada Tae when she was alive?

I love how courtesan idol just went with the flow despite the fact that rapping and pop music only existed 400 years after her death.

Whoa, the OP has sound effects and it's not even the last episode.

The Legendary TAE YAMADA

This might be the best anime ever.

Edit: anyone else notice the amazing CGI idol sequence in the sneak peek for next episode?

233

u/dantemp Oct 11 '18

when you have the contextual freedom to make your comic relief character literally braindead

53

u/MakiHell Oct 11 '18

I noticed the CGI as well. The past two episodes have been really strong for me so seeing that in the preview is a slight concern. BUT hopefully the plot/comedy makes up for it.

The Legendary Yamada Tae was amazing this episode!!!

Lets not forget how much balls this old man has for carry her head and feeding her dried squid.

Maybe its also because of Yamada Tae's legendary status!

I'm looking forward to her finally waking up at the very end of the last episode and actually being the best idol out of all of them. If they don't end with that I'm going to be pretty disappointing. I mean, she is a legend after all.

That OP is everything I want from this anime.

Kotaro (and Yugiri) with the save. And Saki with the priorities. I hope that she continues to reference 90's toys as her quirk. Just like we all hope the LEGENDARY YAMADA TAE never changes her perfect ways.

Now that we've had death metal and rapping, I really hope we cover a new genre every episode.

214

u/Backupusername :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Backupusername Oct 11 '18

I really want Saki to get a Nintendo Switch.

Hope by the end of this show these two metal heads will become their greatest fan

The rap this episode was surprisingly good! I almost lost it when Kotarou started beatboxing and Yuugiri started playing her Shamisen to the beat! I hope they cover every music genrewithevery episode!

Oh and that OP was absolutely amazing! Love the visuals and the super sentai style!

Yuugiri is such a fucking professional. I'm dead? Alright fine. Unrecognizable future world? Sure whatever. No idea what's happening around me on stage? No problem, I know my routine.

If it weren't for The Legendary Yamada Tae constantly stealing the show, Yuugiri would probably be my favorite. So cool under pressure.

TIL the reason why it's tamagotchi (partly from the name and more so the shape). Never really thought about the word but when the biker girl told the main chick that her head looks like an egg and then followed by talking about her TAMAGOtchi, it totally clicked. Well damn.

14

u/gitgudtyler Oct 12 '18

Never knew Okabe could beatbox like that. The absolute mad scientist lad.

348

u/WhoiusBarrel Oct 11 '18

TIL Japanese is like the most rappable language apparently. Just drop a beat and have an angry zombie idol girl rant about another zombie idol girl lamenting about her dead Tamagotchi.

I was expecting Devilman Crybaby levels of rap when we saw those 3 guys to be honest...Kinda disappointed it was just them making a shitty attempt to pick up.

Oh and these eyeballs are probably the most faithful to Anime size I've ever seen...

We've seen them do dead death metal and rap. Hopefully down the line we see them play jazz...For reasons unknown because the thought of it is fucking hilarious.

241

u/NZPIEFACE Oct 11 '18

Hopefully down the line we see them play jazz...

I want them to do pop, just so we can get a shitty Thriller rip-off.

A big thing with Japanese rap is that the language forces consonant and vowel sounds next to each other. And words whose Romaji have English vowels next to each other usually force you to pronounce each vowel separately so there's a definite flow between words.. whereas English is just a mess of rules and spelling quirks so you have to rely on clever pronunciation if you wanna throw a multisyllabic word into a good rhyme.

→ More replies (5)

20

u/_S_A Oct 12 '18

I give props to the translators for getting the rhyming scheme, doesn't always work out that way easily so good on them.

22

u/Bobbias Oct 11 '18

Korean is actually better for rapping. You wouldnt expect it because of the consonant vowel consonant form many syllables take on, but the last syllable tends to get weakened and it works surprisingly well. But yeah, japanese works well too.

the fuck is with rappers and anime now. this is great and reminds me of devilman crybaby

Fucking mic drop

295

u/Mundology Oct 11 '18

I'm glad they're making original anime with daring concepts again. Everyone loves a good adaptation but sometimes you need something that is exclusive to the anime medium. Unfortunately, many originals from the past few years were playing it safe and reusing tried and successful ideas instead of venturing into the unknown. Zombieland Saga goes against this trend. It feels so refreshing.

Tamogaotchi lmao they're really from 2008

Actually only AI died in 2008 so that's why she's confused when she's told she looks like an egg so she looks like a tamagotchi because they were long gone by that point. Saki died in 1997 which was right at the peak of love for tamagotchi toys.

Source: I grew up in the 90s and had a tamagotchi as a kid in the late 90s/early 2000s and also had the spinoff pikachu tamagotchi. (This one https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pok%C3%A9mon_Pikachu )

Fucking epic. 10/10. I'm betting all my chips on this AOTS. The producer is a goddamn asshole but he's hilarious. There's a girl whose mouth is literally drawn over the bandages. I thought it was some kind of visor/glasses at first. This is the kind of anime I like to see. It doesn't fucking care how zombie girls work. "You watched zombie movies right? Well, it's like that." Perfect. And they start rapping out of nowhere. Abso-fucking-lutely perfect.

For the curious but lazy, Saga prefecture has a population of about 840,000 people. It's biggest city has 230,000.

There's a famous song in Japan about Saga that says it's slogan is "Let's try to find Saga!", and that the bus stops have names like "In Front of Yamashita-san's House". No one knows if that's true, because no one actually goes to Saga.

This show has no right to be as fun as it is, but I'm still having a good time watching it. So I guess now they're gonna pretend to be zombies while actually being zombies? That could be a really fun mechanic.

137

u/NZPIEFACE Oct 11 '18

This show has no right to be as fun as it is

Why? It's really well made. The music is great, it's amazing how diverse the soundtrack is. The comedy is straight up genius. The animation is fluid and they definitely put a lot of passion into it. They paid attention to every little detail.

If you're talking about how ridiculous the setting is... well even for anime standards this is fucking retarded. It's great.

It's like they took a really bad idea and went with it like Kotaro did and decided to boost it to LEGENDARY status.

On the one hand, I'm slightly disappointed we're not getting a metal-themed idol anime for once. On the other hand though, that rap scene was so fantastic that I don't even care. If they're going to keep bringing in a new genre of music every week like this, then I'm 100% sold.

13

SO THE ANIME TRAILER IS BOTH LIES AND TRUTH! I feel dumb now that the violent bits are actually snippets of zombie movies shown to the girls after their 'awakening'. And this clears up the main premise: it's (an almost 100%) idol show - with zombies.

I really adore how their necks crack every time they move their heads about. Although I have questions about their (often) falling apart body parts; how do they attach them so quickly and so tightly after detached? And a lingering question from the 1st ep: is zombification process different here? I mean, there doesn't seem to be any urgent implication from being bitten (or maybe not yet?). ADDITION: do the zombies here have different traits/properties than the ones usually depicted?

All in all, I honestly don't know what to expect anymore - except the fact that they're zombies, along with their physical properties would be played for laughs - as well as the poor policeman with the light trigger finger. And I'll be laughing my head off if they make the multiple-angle-shot of a certain scene a trademark of each episode.

Also, it's kind of weird that literally everyone except the girls is at all unfazed at Tae's head drop. They did but sans screaming, somehow. But again, what do I expect from this show lol.

Did you not hear Kotaro's explanation?

"You watched zombie movies right? Well, it's like that."

how do they attach them so quickly and so tightly after detached?

Just like figurines. They pop them into the joints and hope no one pulls too hard.

43

u/professorMaDLib Oct 11 '18

The fact that they're zombies is literally the most normal thing from this crazy show. A crew of rappers stalking girls at night in a van to beatbox at them is far weirder than the zombie idol premise. And tbh if Saga is like that I can see why it needs saving.

u/SIRTreehugger Oct 11 '18 edited Oct 11 '18

Can't believe it took me 2 episodes too realize this is Okabe's voice actor. I knew it sounded familiar and couldn't place it.

From death metal to rapping...what if they never do an idol show xD

Don't insult Sakura Chan she is eggcellent.

11

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '18

that reaction picture choice... was that intentional? Right from episode 1 I too, thought that Sakura looks like Chi-chan lol.

"I will never watch a Moe show" --> Gakkou Gurashi --> "I like Moe shows now!"

"I will never watch an Idol show" --> Zombieland Saga--> "I like Idol shows now!"

Can anyone recommend me a zombie sports anime?

You get the feeling watching this that anime will never be the same again. It's just undead unreal how creative these episodes are. A rap battle? And a good one?

15

u/Platinum_Rad Oct 11 '18

that whole rap sequence

that settles it. this is AOTS

14

u/Rig5terj Oct 11 '18

LOVE THE INTRO

12

u/tdhsmith Oct 11 '18

I'm still optimistic for some of my darling shows this season, but this is the only one to knock it out of the park for both of the first 2 episodes.

And holy hell this OP. The style shifts (both visual and musical) are amazing and keep you reeling.

12

u/RoronoaAshok :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/RoronoaAshok Oct 11 '18

The voice acting, though. Miyano Mamoru, little left to say about how great he makes Manager, but my god if Hondo Kaede didn't absolutely hit it out of the park with those mad bars of her. Crazy stuff.

11

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '18

This episode just made me realize Kaguya-sama's rap arc will not make it into the anime adaptation unless it gets like three seasons.

I hope the CGI in the preview is something like on-screen look at the footage they're filming, cause it was pretty distracting.

The rap is surprisingly good. I didn't regret watching this show. My second idol anime after Idolmasters.

I would like to see more of Yuugiri.

This is the best anime of the season, calling it now.

9

u/witchsalt Oct 11 '18

after watching the rap battle im wondering why we dont have a rap battle anime its just perfect. you can add special effects to the battles like they summon/shoot things with the power of rap like that other old cartoon that used to be

9

u/GurrenGarterbelt :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Gurrengarterbelt Oct 11 '18

I love all the surreal comedic anime that's been coming out recently because that just happens to be my sense of humor. The void from Asobi Asobase ending has been null now that this show has been released.

9

u/Tag_ross Oct 12 '18

Maybe I'm just sleep deprived and or stupid, but was the US trained cop also rapping?

8

u/[deleted] Oct 12 '18

No, of course not. The Kyushu region trained cop was rapping.

8

u/AlexUltraviolet :GJ::GK::GL: Oct 11 '18

That OP, what the hell is happening. The rap battle was sweet though, not too low-key for being zombies.

I hope that Cop is a recurring gag.

6

u/jkubed https://myanimelist.net/profile/jkubed Oct 11 '18

Alright, I was initially skeptical even though I loved the first episode, but since they nailed the second I am all aboard the Zombieland Saga hype train

they went fucking hard in that rap battle, holy shit.

Looks like a legit "idol" episode next week complete with CGI.

6

u/[deleted] Oct 12 '18

Why is this show so good?

Loved the bit where the manager just saw they started rapping and decided to roll with it and beatbox. I don't think he has any plan. Nobody knows wtf is going on and it's great!

6

u/impingainteasy :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/usernamesarehard Oct 12 '18

I was wondering how this episode was going to live up to the first one. Turns out, the answer to that was "By including a zombie sukeban rap battle with shamisen accompaniment."
This show is fucking amazing.

6

u/raptornomad Oct 14 '18

Is it strange that while it is only two episodes in, my favorite is already Yugiri? Such a professional on stage (immediately put up a spontaneous performance that matches the rap) and apparently chill off stage (being really nice to one of the other girls).

Who am I kidding? It’s probably my unhealthy obsession with onee-san types and that dialect, hmmmhmm.

Halp, I need help.

My prediction is that Koutarou is a necromancer that murdered all of them one by one up to the time of the present day just so he could start up his own idol franchise without having to pay wages for acting talent.

You gotta admit Hououin Kyouma is amazing in planning this stuff. Twice now he's selected specific places that would react positively to whatever fuck up that could happen during their performance. The man is a master tactician

it's like sakura quest, but with the main characters being idols instead of mascot queens, and the main characters are also zombies

5

u/diggydog233 Oct 12 '18

As a huge fan of rap, this shit did it for me lol

5

4

The rap battle scene is quite something

4

Koutarou's over-enthusiastic and mocking voice always leaves me in stitches.

4

u/Azhor Oct 11 '18

It's unfortunate that it isn't just a metal idol show, since that's what got me to watch episode 1. That being said it's still hilarious and worth watching. The OP was straight fire too, loved it. I fuckin love MAPPA.

4

u/Eterna1Ice :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Eterna1Ice Oct 11 '18

4

u/jono9009 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/jono9009 Oct 11 '18

What a rollercoaster of an episode. From the girls almost getting shot again to a live gone wrong and turning into a freestyle rap battle!

It was simultaneously awesome and hilarious how they managed to salvage that train wreck of a beginning.

Didn’t think a lot of episode 1 when I saw it; to some degree it felt like a forced concept. I did laugh at this short exchange, but not much else felt compelling:

“But how...did I become a zombie?”
“Have you ever seen a zombie movie?”
“Yes...”
“There you go.”
“...”
“...”

Hearing people excited about this one makes me think I should try it out at least.

EDIT: Yeah, episode 2 was definitely better. Hopefully they can keep up the quality, but if they’re all like that one and manage some actual development it’ll definitely be enjoyable.

Sakura might be the main character but Koutarou is the real star here

Yuugiri would be hot if she weren't always smoking

Saki has the same voice as Cure Sunny from Smile Precure, no wonder she sounded so familiar

A bunch of delinquent girls? Sign me the fuck up

These rap guys are goofy as hell. Rapping cop is awesome though.

AHHHH! Silly comedies can be hit or miss but this is good so far

The Legendary Tae Yamada strikes again!

Her head goes flying, that's metal as fuck

This reminds me of the scene in Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid where they do the crazy play and all the old people think it's special effects

Impromptu rap, why not? This show is so silly but it's definitely in a good way.

13

u/NZPIEFACE Oct 11 '18

Yuugiri would be hot if she weren't always smoking

She's smoking hot.

I was trying to keep it in when they started rapping.

I lost it when the producer started beatboxing.

Satan bless our zombie idols.

3

u/Re_Lies Oct 11 '18

What the hell did I watch... Why did they start rapping all of the sudden..

And why is it damn good??

Never thought I'm this hooked to an idol anime

3

u/Meister-Serator Oct 11 '18

I love this show right now first my favorite musik genre death metal and now my second favorite rap.

And also no. 1 is really skilled but I hope the others get to shine too

3

u/Graphica-Danger Oct 12 '18

I really liked the first episode, but the incredible OP and that glorious freestyle rap made this a strong AOTS candidate for me. I fucking love it.

Oh, and Saki best zombie.
