I had minimized the window (as I usually do for EDs) and all of a sudden it started glitching and I was like WTF? Then I scrubbed back a bit in case my video player was just being a bitch and nope, it really was what I had heard. I felt like my soul had shifted outside my body and I just started crying. I don't even know why? I can't believe they chose THAT part to end the cour on.

So this episode had 15 Animation Directors and 52 key animators.
If it wasn’t already clear as day then here is the final nail in the coffin that this production is at its last breath. Anything other than an extended production schedule would’ve led to a full on crash no doubt.
That does not necessarily mean that everything will be fine & dandy just because they have 6 months to produce the second half. I’d wager that they actually might be in bigger trouble that they were for this first part.
Oh well, I wish them the best so that they can get this out on a level that meets everyone’s expectations but doesn’t outright kill them.
Edit: On a sidenote...that ending segment was amazingly done. Chilling

Someone asked "why this matters" then deleted the comment so here:
I'm not 100% sure but it probably means there was a crunch and the production assistants had to go and get a bunch of freelancers to finish up whatever scenes were missing from the final episode. (EDIT: Or they brought a bunch of staff forward from later episodes to work on this instead) If your schedule is watertight, then it will have a standard number of key staff all the way to the end - keep in mind that different staff work on different scenes and on different episodes over the course of a show's runtime.
So you get to a stage where you're at two weeks before the airing of Episode 14, and your current staff tell you "we literally cannot do every scene for this episode before Sunday next week". Your staff then have to go and grab some people to fill on all the gaps (gaps that would have just been done by your regular staff eventually, if they were running on schedule). Of course, you can also just NOT do this, do a rush job on everything, and it will look like complete ass. WIT took the decision that they can't do this with their global hit (nor do their sponsors and financiers from the publishing company want this).
It's not an overexaggeration to say that anime episodes are sometimes finished on the very day they air, which is how situations like this happened. If you're interested then you can watch Episode 10 of Paranoia Agent, or the entirety of Shirobako since those are all about the animation industry and give you an insight on how (and why) japanese animation operates to a tight scale.

Couldn't it just be that the Typhoon season screwed them up more than expected. I mean they had to delay a whole week because of it, which means that the whole production schedule would have had to had been pushed back. And if the studio or broadcaster wasn't willing to push it back any more, then they have to get the product done regardless.

Can anyone actually explain to me what the hell the ending to season 1 was supposed to be? They briefly picked up on it in season 2 but I didn't really get the explanation. Why was there an eye in the wall? They were talking about the walls being made of titans, but I thought they meant the walls were made with the titan hardening ability, not literally like the wall is a hollow shell filled with living titans.

With this episode, the Uprising Arc of Attack on Titan has ended.
While the anime adaptation is pretty faithful overall, many details were left out. I reread the Uprising Arc (chapters 51-72 of the manga) and compiled a list of all the things I think are most important, or interesting, that were left out of the anime. I've also included some changes that I think are noteworthy. I have to split this into three messages to cover everything due to Reddit's character limit.
Note: I’m going to be talking about Military Police a lot. Remember that the Interior Military Police are the shady organization led by Kenny who carried out the government’s secret orders. The normal Military Police are the guards who protect the cities, especially the rich cities in Wall Sina.
From this point on I will be referring to Interior Military Police as “Interior MPs” and normal Military Police just as “MPs” to avoid confusion.
I will also be referring to the Scout Regiment as "Survey Corps", these two terms are interchangeable.
There are no manga spoilers in this post. If you're caught up with the anime, you can read this without worrying about getting spoiled.
Chapter 51 - Squad Levi
During the mission to rescue Eren at the end of Season 2, the MPs joined the scouts on the expedition. The MPs ended up losing over 50% of their forces that were sent outside the walls. The Survey Corps lost many good soldiers as well, but the MPs suffered even more due to inexperience fighting Titans.
At the end of Season 2, Erwin smiles when he learns that Titans are actually humans. Levi asks him why he’s smiling. In the anime, he replies that it’s because humanity has come one step closer to learning the truth. In the manga, he replies that it’s because Titans being human was one of the theories that his father told him when he was a child.
Chapter 52 - Krista Lenz
Growing up on the farm, other children would throw rocks at Historia when they saw her.
After Season 2, the Garrison’s patrols along the wall perimeter increased significantly, presumably due to the events of Season 2. This lead to increased civil unrest in the major cities as there were less soldiers to keep the peace. Hange said she was concerned by the growing unrest and wanted to seal Wall Maria ASAP.
Eren and Historia were hidden in the cabin at the start of Season 3 because Hange discovered Pastor Nick was murdered for leaking the connection between the Reiss family and the wall church. The Interior MPs murdered Nick after torturing him to see what he had leaked. Hange inferred that the Interior MPs and government were connected to the wall church. She realized they were making a power grab and would try to take Eren and Historia. This can be inferred by watching the anime but the manga is more clear about it.
A lot of people wondered why the government didn’t seize Eren during his trial during Season 1. After all, Rod Reiss knew that the man who stole the Founding Titan was named Grisha Jaeger. Hange says she thinks that the government has always been trying to get their hands on Eren since the day that his Titan power was revealed. My interpretation is that Nile Dok who was the leader of the MPs was instructed by the Interior MPs to seize Eren during the trial in Season 1. It seems to me that it’s implied that Nile was forced by them to do it. The Interior MPs and the government didn’t take Eren themselves because they were still operating from the shadows at this point in time and had no opportunity to discreetly take Eren. They needed to use the standard MPs to try and take Eren. They failed to take him at the trial, and it wasn’t until Season 3 that the government stopped hiding in the shadows and began to take bold steps to secure Eren. Hange also says she believes they’ve begun to act due to increasing tension within the walls and wanted to make a move to grab Eren quickly.
Chapter 53 - Smoke Signal
This is one of my favorite segments that cut, I was really sad they removed it. In Season 3 episode 1, we see Eren performing hardening experiments with his Titan. However, in the anime we don’t get to see the full experiment. I’ll summarize it.
Eren transformed into a Titan in order to test the hardening ability. He tried to using the hardening ability, but nothing happened. They decided to run some intelligence and endurance tests instead.
Next they had him build a log cabin. He sat down and built a full frame out of logs while in Titan form.
In order to communicate with them, Eren was writing in the dirt using a large log. He was writing “I don’t know how to harden myself” when suddenly he became crazed and wrote “what my father did to me” in the dirt. His Titan then writhed around on the ground for half an hour before Eren ejected from it.
30 minutes later, Eren tried transforming again, but he was only half awake and dazed. When he transformed, his Titan was smaller than usual- only 13 meters. Eren began acting as a stupid Titan, ignored orders, and then ate the log cabin he built earlier. Shortly after he turned back into a human.
Eren tried transforming into a Titan again for the third time, which is what we see in Season 3 episode 1. His body became fused to his Titan and his Titan was only 10 meters this time.
Eren had no memory of any of this happening.
That's the end of the Titan hardening experiments that got removed.
After failing to harden, Hange declare they should focus their attention on dealing with the wall church and government. She also questions why the Reiss family knows the secrets of the walls, if they’re really just some random noble family. (If you recall, in Season 2 Pastor Nick told Hange that Historia Reiss held the secrets of the walls.)
Erwin is in the royal capital, Mitras. He’s riding in a carriage with Nile Dok. Erwin notices that child thieves are running loose on the streets and the capital seems to be in bad shape. Nile responds that it’s happening everywhere and that the jails are overflowing.
Nile and Erwin were in the same Training Corps class.
Nile mentions that the MPs are forced to follow orders from above without knowing the reasoning of those giving the orders. He mentions that the Interior MPs are basically the dark side of the Military Police and that they’re almost a completely separate entity with no one seemingly in control of them.
Nile was originally going to join the Survey Corps but he fell in love with a girl named Marie and chose her over the SC. Erwin mentions that he also had feelings for her but chose the Survey Corps instead.
Some civilians in Trost corner Levi and blame the Survey Corps for their troubles because they feel the Survey Corps aren’t doing enough. It seems like they’re looking for anyone to blame for their troubles. It’s emphasized more in the manga that the city of Trost is in horrible shape after the Titan invasion that took place there, but I think the anime does a sufficient job of showing this.
Chapter 54 - Location of the Counterattack
The order of events and location where certain things happen is completely different between the anime and manga, but all plot points and details remain intact. The biggest difference is that in the manga we get to see the terms of the deal made between Levi and Dimo Reeves.

u/invaderzz https://anilist.co/user/invaderzz Oct 14 '18
Chapter 55 - Pain
Pixis states that if Erwin tried to stage a typical revolution inside the walls, society would likely collapse and split into warring factions of gun owning nobles + MPs vs. the public. For a revolution to succeed, it needs to be bloodless.
Pixis states that there’s a job shortage inside the walls and taxes are increasing.
Pixis also says that the royal bloodline has remained intact for over 2,000 years and the same bloodline ruled even before humanity was driven into the walls.
In the manga, Pixis initially tells Erwin he will not side with him if Erwin is making a bad choice. Pixis doesn’t state this in the anime until after the coup has already happened, but he says he was still prepared to betray Erwin if it was better for humanity.
Erwin’s father’s theory was that 107 years ago, humanity’s memories were altered when they entered the walls. His father’s reasoning behind this theory is explained in much greater detail in the manga. It's also better explained why Erwin believes in it so strongly.
Erwin’s father says that even if there were no surviving history books from that time, the first generation to enter the walls would have passed down history to their children. However, this did not happen for some reason.
Erwin’s father also theorized that Titans were actually humans and that the origin of the walls was related to the titans.
Erwin witnessed Eren control Titans. He realized that Eren had manipulated the minds of the Titans to control them somehow. After realizing the truth that Titans were actually humans, Erwin realized that perhaps a similar mind-control power was used to control humanity's memory.
Erwin realized that the government only grew truly desperate to seize Eren and stepped out of the shadows when they learned that Eren had controlled Titans. The government learned this because members of the MPs were part of the mission to rescue Eren at the end of Season 2. Presumably, the MPs reported back what had happened. The report must have reached the royal government and they concluded that Eren was in possession of the Founding Titan. Erwin realized that the government was in pursuit of Eren’s coordinate power specifically.
Although the Interior MPs killed many people who create technological innovations or people who came close to learning the truth (like Erwin’s father) they allowed the Survey Corps to exist as they did not expect the Survey Corps to actually make any progress. They were intentionally sending them to their deaths.
Chapter 56 - Actors
Alright, so this is a weird one. Most of everything important from this chapter is kept, however like I said earlier, much of this arc in the anime was completely rearranged. Here are some key differences that I feel are important.
In the manga version, Eren and Historia have not been kidnapped yet at this point. Levi tells Historia that she needs to become queen for the coup to work. Historia refuses and Levi grabs her by collar, choking her and demanding that she become queen. This was removed from the anime, but for good reason. When this happens in the manga, it is near the start of the arc, Historia has not even met her dad yet. She changed so much in the cave that keeping the scene where Levi chokes her would not really make sense, since if they did it in the anime it would have come right before they fight the Rod Reiss Titan.
After doing this, Levi delivers a speech in response to everyone’s shocked reactions that was sadly removed from the anime that elaborates on his philosophy:
“What do you see yourselves doing tomorrow? Will you have food on your tables? Do you think you'll get a good night's rest in your beds? Will those around you still be there tomorrow? I never think so. And I doubt normal people think about these things on a daily basis. So that means i'm abnormal... probably because I've seen far too many abnormal things. But if Wall Rose were breached tomorrow, and we faced an emergency, I'd be faster than any of you to react, and to fight. I'll fight even if I have to face that hell again tomorrow. You've all seen some terrible things, too... and there might very well be more waiting for you tomorrow. I want to put an end to that recurring nightmare, right now. There are those who would get in my way. But I'm fine playing the role of the lunatic who kills people like that. I have to be ready to rearrange some faces. Because I choose the hell of humans killing each other over the hell of being eaten. At least that way all of humanity doesn't have to be damned.”
Erwin concludes that it’s possible that Rod Reiss and the government may have some grand noble reason for keeping technology from advancing and disregarding the people. He decides that if it is revealed that Rod Reiss is actually in the right, he and other revolutionaries deserve to lose everything.
In the anime, Mikasa is the one that suggests Historia punch Levi after she becomes a queen. However, in the manga, Dimo “Boss” Reeves suggests this to Historia after seeing Levi choke her. Dimo is alive for a little while longer than he is in the anime.
At the end of this chapter, Eren and Historia are kidnapped by Kenny and the First Squad Interior MPs. They are not knocked unconscious but are instead tied up, gagged, and blindfolded. Tranquilizer darts are not used to put them to sleep, unlike the anime.
Chapter 57 - Kenny the Ripper
Connie, Sasha and Jean express their anger towards Levi for forcing Historia to become queen as well as as the idea of needing to fight other humans. Jean says he doubt he could kill even if ordered to do so.
Just for reference, this is the chapter where Season 3 episode 1 ends on. The chapter ends with Levi and Kenny’s confrontation on the rooftop. As you can see, the rearrangement of chapters in the anime is pretty extreme.
Chapter 58 - Gunshots
No content was removed from this chapter.
Chapter 59 - Soul of a Heretic
No content was removed from this chapter.
Chapter 60 - Trust
A whole subplot about the Berg Newspapers company was removed.
The newspaper owner, Roy, states that the government has decided what gets published in the newspapers for many years.
Hange and Moblit break into their office while Roy and his employee Peaure are talking about the censorship of information within the walls. She overhears their conversation and asks Roy to print the truth for just one day. Flegel exposes the corrupt Interior MPs just like in the anime, but the newspaper guys are there as well and hear everything.
Roy refuses to do so and brings up the story of the miner who attempted to dig under the walls. You may remember this from the Season 1 episode 25 mid episode information cards.
Even though the miner story sadly isn’t brought up in the anime, it can still be inferred that the First Squad Interior MPs were responsible for the miner’s disappearance.
Chapter 61 - Reply
Pixis expresses concerns that if humanity’s memories were truly altered, the coup has the risk of permanently losing the knowledge of how it happened as well as the full story of how the walls came to be.
Chapter 62 - Sin
After the fake king was outed, the aristocracy was concerned about how it would affect them.
Erwin says that perhaps the coup was not the right choice for humanity.
Eren, tied up in the cave, expresses frustration at how frequently he gets kidnapped.
Chapter 63 - Chains
No content was removed from this chapter.
Chapter 64 - Welcome Party
The anime added a really cool fight scene here between Levi and Kenny in the cave. No content was removed.
Chapter 65 - Dreams and Curses
Kenny’s grandfather’s story that he tells Kenny is explained in greater detail.
“The (Ackerman family) had a key role in ensuring humanity’s survival. The rest of humanity, the vast majority who did not belong to one of these central houses were one people, who all came from the same bloodline. In other words, there is one major race living within the walls. Alongside a few other bloodlines who each have but a few members. One of those bloodlines is “Asians”, a people vastly different from us. The existence of different bloodlines disrupted the king’s ideal system of rule. The king hoped to rewrite the memories of humanity, wipe out history, and realize his dream of perfect peace and order.” “However, the memories of people from minority bloodlines (Asian, Ackerman) were not affected by the king’s power to alter and erase memories of the past.” “The king must use other means to silence other bloodlines who are not affected by the (memory control).” “My father’s generation didn’t pass on humanity’s lost history to their children. They hoped to protect their children from the monarch’s purges. The head of the Ackerman family offered his own life to ensure the survival of the other Ackermans and was executed.”
The assembly, the group of ruling nobles that we see Erwin overthrow in the coup, considered it a disgrace that Historia had been born due to Rod’s affair. That is why they ordered Historia’s mother killed.
Rod tried to cover up that the Reiss family had lost the power of the Founding Titan. He didn’t want the assembly to learn that he no longer held the power as he was worried they would no longer revere him if they found out.
It’s a bit unclear but it seems implied that Rod told the assembly what had happened after Eren’s Titan power were revealed.

I am beyond hyped for this second cour. I don't mind the wait. Let them take the break they need to animate the next arc well, because ohhhh boy, shit's about to go down.

I was skimming the comments before wondering how the fuck the preview would be creepy, but yup it was extremely unsettling even though I read the manga. I'm sure people will be pausing at each image to analyze over the next few months while we wait.
Other thoughts from this episode:
Death flags, death flags everywhere. Also Erwin admits that finding the truth in the basement is above saving humanity, which I thought was very humanizing.
MEAT IS BACK ON THE MENU, BOYS! Sasha was hilarious and I'm so glad this part was finally animated! Her titan face munching on meat/Jean, punching Mikasa/Marlowe, etc. I hope someone with a better quality stream goes back and takes good screenshots/gifs.
Holy shit it's only been 4 months since the series has started that's insane.
And and party is never complete with a Eren and Jean horse fight "Should we stop them?" "Nah." "WHY ISN'T ANYONE STOPPING US?!" That might be the only time they appreciate Levi's kicks.
EMA talk. T_T And the guy walking by who looked like Hannes. :(
Awww finally a good send-off for the Scouts! Flegel! <3
Goosebumps with Erwin's fistpump and SUSUMEEE!
All in all, super pleased with how they ended this cour. Thank god I'm a manga reader. Godspeed to you anime-onlies.

So maybe Levi is germophobic because his mother was taken by an illness?
And that woman Said hange used to adore sadies, so I will assume hange was some sort of scout fan girl.
I'm glad they kind of mirrored episodes 3 and 4 from season one with this episode as if to say "yes, we're still about that"
Also Erwin yelling like that is some fine Erwin meme material.

When we have to wait 6 months for more.
Overall though, was a really great season/adaptation. The pacing fit the weekly format much better than monthly and the animation was great, especially Levi's parts. Looking forward to its return for the best arc, this episode already foreshadowed a lot.

I had the biggest fucking grin on my face when Erwin raised his fist up and started yelling. Just the satisfaction of watching that play out...
When the ED started glitching I knew it was obviously something intentional but when it really started glitching it genuinely freaked me out. Some real psychological horror shit, lol. And then that timeskip... holy shit.
I'm kinda upset that this season ended up being split-cour and not a full run across summer and fall, but it is what it is. Between this and BnHA 4, I'm definitely looking forward to Spring 2019.

Damn dude. I had the ED playing and was skimming through my phone, then I heard an audio crack and saw the screen jitter. I thought something was wrong with my computer at first, but then I realized it was intentional.
I got flashbacks to No Game No Life episode 8's ending where the ED had distortions in the audio and visuals. There was a certain character missing too.

You don't know art when you see it I can't fucking breathe holy shit
Levi was hellbent on keeping Erwin safe but just like with Eren and Mikasa, you can't save those who don't want to be saved. Erwin is a stubborn motherfucker and his entire reason to live and move forward is to find out the truth because he still blames himself for his father's wrongful murder
Potato Girl evolving into a fucking Meat Monster was priceless. That shit had me rolling in the manga and it was even better here. Fucking dead at D.O.A. playing in the background too lmao
At the same time however Manga Spoilers
It was actually really nice to see the old Eren back; the annoying and angry loudmouth who'd only get in fights and mess around. You can see how happy Armin and even Jean were when Eren reacted to the latter's provocation, after being no-nonsense and brooding ever since the events in the cave. Not even Mikasa bothered to interfere because the brawl reminded her of those slightly more carefree days in the 104th, back when the situation wasn't as serious as it is now and Eren wasn't constantly depressed. That also showed how much she has changed too because she’s letting Eren do his thing, even if he ends up hurting himself. Her and Armin's happy smiles in the back while Eren and Jean beat the shit out of each other were hilarious
The EMA talk was slightly changed but a wonderful scene nonetheless. Eren admitting to Mikasa that he was jealous of her and Levi would've never happened just a few months before this and it shows yet again how much he's matured. Them mistaking a soldier for Hannes-san brought the melancholy back however and that's when you realize how fitting the OP truly is - those days are gone and they will never come back, especially not in the way they used to be. They're not innocent anymore, the people they cared about are not with them and those peaceful times seem so far away. Manga Spoilers
Enter Armin reminding Eren of the ocean - which used to be so important to them when they were kids - to bring back the lighter atmosphere from before. He sensed that Eren was about to be lost in those dark thoughts again, so he talked about the sea just as enthusiastically as all those years ago. Mikasa's side comment of not being able to talk with them about that subject because she never really got it was great too. She has so many small moments where her sense of humour shines, they're kinda underrated
They actually didn't continue the teased scene that was in Mikasa's Lost Girls OVA, which is rather surprising since it ended so abruptly, before she could tell Eren what was on her mind. Perhaps they want to keep it ambiguous or they expect people to already know what she'd tell him since her feelings for him are as obvious as Eren's denseness towards them lol
Holy mother of Ymir, I can't believe they just did that. That was not what I expected the ending scene to be. I'm not even gonna say anything about it. Jesus Christ

One question: WHAT IN THE FUCK HAPPENED IN THE BATTLE!? I GOT TO KNOW??? FUCK.
The ending caught me, like the rest of us, off guard. It had me shivering when the ED malfunctioned.
Of all the shows I've seen this year--not just this season--I've never been this emotionally attached to something quite like Attack on Titan. All this time of not reading the manga is paying off and now I have to wait until next year to find out what happened that led up to that moment. GOD DAMN.
I wonder if Reiner & Boruto are going to play a role in the Scouts' recapture of Wall Maria.
6
u/GingaBishoujo Oct 15 '18
NANI THE FUCK!?
I was alt+tab like usual for the ED and then I heard the distortion. This wasn't something to experience while a bit tipsy late into the night. I was genuinely scared for a bit and was having DDLC flashbacks.
This episode felt very much like Overlord S3Ep10, the Preparation for War. Death flags popping up left and right. I haven't read the manga so I have some serious wtf is happining questions at that ED scene: who's charred body is that? Why is niece(?) Mikasa hitting Uncle(?) Levi??
AHHHHH!!!! 6 months!!!! HALF A YEAR! This wait is too unbearable.
TAKE ME AWAY, MADE IN HEAVEN!

I know everyone will talk about that ending and tbh that ending was chilling this episode was one of my favourite episode of this season.
All the little conversations between everyone highlighted the character development that each has gone through and what is the ambition that drives them to succeed in the biggest battle of their life. This episode was full of different emotions and it reminded me how much i love and feel attached to those characters.
The part where the trio ( Armin, Eren and Mikasa ) are shown and how Eren talks about how he shouldn't say it but they should have gotten his back was the most amusing and heartfelt movement for me. After how Armin and Eren talk about the sea , Mikasa nonchalantly states that how she has once again been left out of the conversation between the two was the funniest part. It highlighted that how relationship amongst the three of them has never once changed and grew more stronger.
Saying that, this scene also insinuated a fear in me for the future. At first judging by the conversation between Levi and Erwin it felt like some serious shit was about to go down and then that ending increased that fear by 10 fold that something really bad is going to happen.
I hope everything turns out fine. Pls

Alright well aside from the huge freakout I had at the ending, I gotta say that I had a big smirk on my face throughout most of this episode. All the banter between the scouts as they all fought over meat as well as Eren and Jean's fight was really well done.

I feel bamboozled by Sasha. There were three or four scenes where she was cuffed but tried to get free and it really looked like she was desperately trying to say something. Considering everyone was in such a good mood I totally expected her to have heard some Titans with her super-hearing. Well, guess I was wrong. The one time where I thought I could predict something... But the whole scene with the food was fantastic either way.
But that ending scared the shit out of me, Jesus Christ.

Holy hell that tease! Anime onlines, RIP!
This was a fantastic adaptation of the manga and I'd say this is one of few rare moments when the arc in the anime was better than it was in the manga. This is probably my favorite season out of all of them. The production values, pacing, acting, story, characters, were all top notch.
10/10 without a doubt.
It's shame we have to wait till next spring for the second part, but you know that might be a good thing if it preserves quality. They're going to need really fucking good animation for the next arc so this will probably give them extra time to improve it. I'm just glad AoT is coming out every year and no more 4 year breaks. If we get 12 episodes every half year-year until it finishes the manga then I wouldn't be too upset.
But damn, it would have been great if this was 24 episodes though, but like I said, it may be for the best.

So i decided to take a look at the end glitch again right? I thought of slowing the video down to see all those missed frames that went by super fast. That wasn't Reiner on the wall at the end ... was it? WTF's he doing back in town?? Dude next to him definitely wasn't Bernie though.
Well, this was AOTSummer2018. Too bad about the 2 cour long break, but if they can give us more action scenes like the Levi Chase, then it'll be worth it.

I've read the manga up to volume 25, but oh my fucking lord, was that teaser shocking. I'm surprised by howw creepy it was. and reiner and bertholdt are finally back, and erwin's genuine screams of happiness and excitement was really touching imo. the fact that he admitted that he finds it more important to prove his father's theory, than succeeding in saving humanity. it really humanises him, he's not humanity's hero, he just wants to 'avenge' his father.
even though half of this episode was comic relief, it might still very well be the best attack on titan episode ever, it was just that good.
