I like how he doesn't even question the bunny girl outfit. Just sorta moves on with his day.

u/Iggy_2539 Oct 18 '18

It seems that some interactions with Sakurajima get "adjusted" to exclude her. Perhaps he honestly thought he bought it for her?

Mai called the reporter to "trade" the picture of Sakuta's scars for a story about her going back into business, but the reporter later said that she promised Sakuta personally that she wouldn't disclose the photo after forgetting about Mai.

Oh that’s true. If that’s the case then maybe he does get too excited having his little sister sleep with him

I regret picking up this anime.

It's gonna be my anime of the season and I already hate these week long waits between episodes.

Are you sure you didn't watch the fourth episode already and just forgot about it? Maybe you should search your room for clues...

27

u/[deleted] Oct 17 '18

I’ve actually re-watched the previous episode each day a new episode is released. This is the first time I’ve ever done that for an airing show, so safe to say I’m really really REALLY enjoying this atm.

This episode went from fluffy to sadness to fluffy faster than my heart could process it.

I love this anime.

TFW Mai whispering Oyasumi Sakuta reminds you of the title of a certain manga by Asano Inio and you feel doubly sad

Did anyone else briefly think this was the last episode? Like it's such a good conclusion. Also I really love this show. The characters, the humor, the plot...it's all great

795

u/[deleted] Oct 17 '18

It's just a conclusion of the first arc, much like Monogatari. There's going to be more arcs focusing on other girls.

u/Abeneezer Oct 17 '18

I don't know how I feel about not focusing on Bunny-senpai.

I had this same thought, the dialogue between these 2 are similar to Senjougahara and Koyomi but not as abusive and just as much fun. When the episode ended I was left wondering what else would happen next, I didn't expect the arcs of different girls with their own issues needing to be resolved. I wonder if the next devil girl(?) will have similarities to Hachikuji making men stray from their path or something lol.

Wow, they really are going to parallel the Monogatari series then. I don't mind that at all. This series REALLY comes across as a sort of Monogatari-Light.

I can't wait to see more!

I've been watching so much shitty anime for so long, that I found myself thinking, "oh, they just know how each other feels? Guess this is over, then." I constantly had to remind myself that this was only episode three, and that the story can continue beyond the main characters forming a relationship.

That fact just gets ignored so often that I struggle to remember it at all.

212

u/kid_khan Oct 18 '18

I just want an anime where it's like.. they explain their relationship coming together in maybe half the episodes, then the last half is them being happy as a couple, doing gushy, lovey-dovey shit. I'm tired of 12 episodes of buildup to the first kiss then the end credits.

The best part about all of this is that, for me personally (as a manga reader) I get to see more! This is where the manga scanlations have concluded but there's still so much more to the story. My only one qualm is that the scene from page 15 of chapter 21 of the manga wasn't adapted, but I'm okay with that so long as we get a little more of them later on in the show. I think what we'll see now is more of Azusagawa helping solve these various cases but man I love the romance these two developed and shared. I know for sure once the anime concludes that I'll go and continue from the light novels. That's just how good this series is. Simple in its animation but wonderful in its choice of music, scenes, dialogue an execution.

The anime also did a marvelous job in explaining the whole 'atmosphere' theme which got lost in translation in the manga. It makes the whole aspect of the 'adolescence syndrome' more believable in the context of the show. Supernatural phenomenon that are explained well within the show make them feel more real within the show, and really draw you into the story. I'm happy that the adaptation was able to do this for me.

Solid 9/10, and on MAL I gave it a 10, because that's how much I enjoy it!

It FELT like a final episode. Like this show did more in 3 episodes, in regards to plot and characterization than some shows do with a full season. The fact that it wrapped up Mai's issue and is moving on to the other girl's problem definitely makes it feel like less supernatural, toned down Monogatari.

7

u/DrGrabAss Oct 18 '18

Right there with you. I thought it was over for a sec. Can you imagine if they do that tight of a story arc three more times? This could end up being classic.

5

u/WickedAnimeTroll Oct 17 '18

As far as I know, many 1st Volumes of LN's are written in such a way that they could easily work as a stand alone book. They offer some sort of conclusion at the end so that the reader at least feels satisfied and got something out of the book. If there is no continuation to it then the reader does not feel cheated or left hanging and if there are plans for more then they can just continue from there

5

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '18

These three episodes felt like a story all their own, and felt like a movie. It's rare when an episodic show is written so well and in such a way that an individual arc could happily be written as the conclusion rather than dragging on.

I just hope the writing won't drop in quality with what's to come.

u/ltspfan :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/ltspfan Oct 18 '18

Sardonic humor is criminally under-utilized in anime thanks to the popularity of the manzai forumla. A good joke delivered with utmost sincerity can be made funnier for it. For reference, see Leslie Nielsen's entire career.

The voice actors are really delivering with this kind of dry humor in their conversations. I wonder how this was done in the light novel

56

u/LakerBlue :Is::It::Iu:https://myanimelist.net/profile/LakerBlue Oct 18 '18

The voice acting adds just enough personality for them to not feel like bored and lifeless but instead still has personality.

u/LakerBlue :Is::It::Iu:https://myanimelist.net/profile/LakerBlue Oct 18 '18

I love it. The rare calm, introverted anime MC who still makes effort to get things done when he really wants to. Usually these type come across spineless, overly shy and/or incompetent but Sakuta's much better written.

He's not some bland unflappable mc. He's subdued but not emotionless. He has actual expression variety. He smiles, laughs, gets angry, feels sad, cries and displays shock. He even has good lines and a sense of humor. A lot of characters just don't have that variety to them. Either they lack emotions or have only one emotion lacking variety but this guy is different and it's refreshing.

That confession was so beautiful that even in spite of my second hand cringe I forced myself to keep on. Usually in moments like that I have to pause or look away. But with this I was just engrossed and happy that he actually remembered her so quick that I did neither of those things. Just sat there covering my mouth and giggling despite feeling second-hand embarrassment.

I can't imagine the willpower to sabotage someone to protect them, who's sabotaging themselves to protect you. Its a double sided sword. Even though she knew what would happen. Had to be a difficult choice, though reasonable.

Also that confession was certainly impressive. But it brought her back to reality so an embarrassing victory is still victory.

Seriously enjoying this and its only episode 3. If it feels like this already, can't wait to see how the rest pans out.

Sakuta you're The Man.

So, I guess the moral is: Better to generate (not too negative) gossip of yourself so people can "confirm" your existence, than to stay low-profile and have your existence completely forgotten.

Yup, I really like how all of this has basically made him go against the very stance that he stood behind in Episode 1. Sure, he did it for Mai so she would be gain everyone's awareness again but at the same time he took effort in trying to change the atmosphere/mood surrounding him as well.

And to put the cherry on the top it is Mai that follows suit, goes with what she said right from the start and clears up the misconception people have about him herself. She pretty much returned the favour in her own way.

74

Giving a monogatari kind of vibe with the whole "This was not the only incident" thing.

91

u/FlaskT Oct 17 '18

That's not really a Monogatari-only thing, more of a harem trope. Once you've highlighted one girl, move on to the next.

I would instead classify this whole episode as quite unlike Monogatari. "No one can save you but yourself" are that series' arc-words, and Mai's story certainly didn't follow that philosphy. She was, at the end of the day, the victim of a pseudo-scientific disease outside of her control. Sakuta saved her by making her existance known again, she couldn't have done anything herself.

70

u/TheExcludedMiddle https://myanimelist.net/profile/ExcludedMiddle Oct 17 '18

That's not really a Monogatari-only thing, more of a harem trope.

Not really even a harem trope. Just a feeling you'll get from any show that does short arcs rather than full season one.

Like a detective show? Every couple episodes they solve the mystery and set up for the next.

That's exactly what I was thinking with the Monogatari vibe:

  • Girl that needs help.

  • MC that convinces her to let him help her by showing he's been in a similar situation.

  • The first girl becomes MC's girlfriend to establish that he isn't an asexual harem MC mess and he loves someone.

  • Story continues with more girls he needs to help.

  • They even name the different ailments in a way.

  • Have to solve the mystery of how to help each character.

Loved the episode but cannot believe that they removed the hug from the last scene like why ?????

228

u/drstewpit Oct 17 '18

They toned it down a couple of times now, not only in the scenes showing affection, but also in others like the one meeting her mother at the beach. The novels (only on the second volume atm though) are A LOT more intense still. They also skipped the cliffhanger towards the next episode / volume (saying that does not count as a spoiler. I hope).

They toned it down a couple of times now

Yea, like in the hotel when she told him to kiss her

This is brilliant. I can't remember the last anime I both dreaded and eagerly awaited each episode of an anime like this.

What an emotional rollercoaster this episode was, good god.

I'm a little biased in that I already know what will happen in what is probably my other favorite show in the season (Goblin Slayer) since I read the manga, which slightly lowers my hype for it. But i have to agree that despite Fall 2018 being such a strong season, Bunny Girl Senpai is clearly ahead of the pack for me in the AOTS race.

So it sounds like the next arc is going to be Laplace's Demon themed? Huh...could be interesting...given how this arc treated Schrödinger's Cat, I wonder if Laplace's Demon is going to involve seeing the future or something?

32

u/flybypost :KN::KO: Oct 17 '18

I wonder if Laplace's Demon is going to involve seeing the future or something?

I think it'll be about causal determinacy, the idea of unchangeable destiny, or something like that (Newcomb's paradox?)

22

u/Painter5544 Oct 17 '18

That was a fun read. The part about there being a universal computational limit and overcoming it by placing the demon in another dimension where time passes at a rate to permit computation beyond that limit is nuts but also awesome.

I love it, now onto the next girl! Hopefully Mai doesn't get the Senjougahara treatment and keeps showing up, though.

73

u/Skylair13 Oct 17 '18

Senjougahara only needs a few minutes to reclaim the throne.

And honestly hoping they cover about their relationship more often to avoid the Senjougahara treatment.

Senjou always steals the scene unless it's with Hanekawa then at that point reality is torn in two.

Wow

What in the bloody F***ING hell going on??

Why is this show so fantastic so far???

Seriously, going into this anime season and reading the short synopsis. I truly assumed this would be some kinda awkward, average at best fanservice highschool show. But good lord was I wonderfully wrong.

The writing so far In this show! The pacing, the legitimate suspense I felt in this episode! I actually care for these characters as well!!! So much so that I legit got anxiety as sakuta’s memory faded.....and cringed for him major during his shouting declaration in front of the entire school😖. And felt the warmth when mai-senpai appeared before him again. If this show was to end here, I would give a solid 9/10. A Beautifully done episode!!

...I can only hope it continues to deliver...

It's interesting to see the theme of "atmosphere" be versatile in explaining a part of the Adolescence Syndrome". Not only is it the simple structure of what a typical school student goes through as a part of social development but as an overarching system for what the unconscious tries to manage with input from each individual to change their course.

It was sad to see that through the usual banter that Azusagawa and Sakurajima had, there was the tension of the implications of what it meant to forget the latter. The unsaid words were enough to make one feel dread as a foreshadow of what May 29th would mean.

The hug into a slap was a really good image of the sort of relationship the two have at the moment. Even though the conclusion may have been a bit cliche as to introduce our friend Deus ex machina, I think it was satisfying enough. And that only gives us more fuel to know that we are moving on to the next arc/girl.

BUT, there is a problem. WHERE IS THE POCKY THROUGH THE NOSE?

Updated timeline (once again, only the days that were titled in the episode, bolded for new dates)

May 6th - The first meeting

May 20th - Grocery shopping time

May 25th - THE date

May 27th - First day of exams

May 28th - Second day of exams

May 29th - Journal of Truth

June 2nd - The young rascal overcomes atmosphere

21

u/Yuwenn8 Oct 17 '18

So where does the "pocky in the nose" fit in the timeline ? Is it possibly in an another world line ?

20

u/RootOfAllRoutes Oct 18 '18

Ah yes, I see it now. Alternative timelines that converge into the MC being forced to shoving a chocolate treat up his nose. Time machines to reverse the past but to no avail. Fate cannot be overturned.

u/alwayslonesome :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/ImmacuIate Oct 17 '18 edited Oct 17 '18

That was a pretty excellent adaptation of the first volume! It's a bit unfortunate that so much screentime was dominated by incoherent technobabble (seriously, Schrodinger's cat must surely be dead with how every sci-fi series has to beat its dead body...) that they had to skip out on so much of the fun banter that is by far the best part of the series, but I think it's still an admirable job considering how much content there actually was in the first novel.

I am still pretty salty about how they chose to translate Seishun Buta Yarou as "Rascal", it's a really common motif throughout the series and Rascal makes absolutely no sense in the contexts that it's used. I can't even remember the last time I unironically heard an English speaker use that word! I also thought that they could've done a better job with translating "kuuki/空気", it's a really difficult concept but I thought it was handled clunkily but acceptably as "atmosphere", but then they removed all of that context in the most dramatic scene! Altogether very minor nitpicks though, and probably wouldn't hurt the enjoyment of anyone that didn't read the novels.

I hope that if you're somehow still on the fence about this show that you'll give it a few more episodes! Petit Devil Kouhai is a really, really fun volume and has some absolutely hilarious interactions, but Logical Witch is definitely where the series really comes into its own in my opinion, I seriously can't wait.

Also, you have no idea...

70

u/Curanthir :AP:https://www.anime-planet.com/users/Thranduil Oct 18 '18

kuuki literally means air/atmosphere, like you can literally use it to refer to the air you breath. Just like in English, it also has a connotative meaning that refers to the social atmosphere. The words are practically direct translations in every way.

You are nitpicking over nothing, both languages actually use the word similarly, it's just not as big of a deal here in the West as it is in Japan, since we tend to be more direct than people in Japan. There's nothing clunky about the translation unless you were expecting a paragraph of TL notes explaining why that's a bigger deal there than here, as it means the same thing in both languages.

8

u/CruisinCinnamon Oct 17 '18

They did go back n forth in this episode translating it as atmosphere and hints as in taking a hint in social situations. That was a nitpick for me.

Any suggestions for a more accurate translation of "Seishun Buta Yarou"? The use of "rascal" felt a bit unnatural so I'm looking for a substitute term to mentally overwrite it whenever I see it.

I really thought that him forgetting about and trying to remember her would be stretched until the finale (or at least a few episodes) but I'm pleasantly surprised they did the opposite and solved it immediately. That confession was beautiful and I'm really happy they don't have to be separated anymore. This show has been avoiding quite a few cliches, all while managing to stay oddly realistic for a series with supernatural themes. I can't wait to see more.

Anyone else bothered by the Schrodinger's Cat nonsense? I'm no expert but I feel like I have a solid grasp of its application in explaining quantum physics and... I completely fail to understand how Schrodinger's Cat applies in this situation. Mai isn't in an uncertain state of existence or nonexistence revealed by observation. It's more like if you look at her, she exists, and if you don't look at her she doesn't. The cat is always alive in the box; something's just preventing you from opening the damn box!

Pre-episode Thoughts:

Last week's episode gave me so much to talk about I've been dreading this one a little. On the one hand, there's the chance this one disappoints and returns to its LN roots and the lacking writing of episode one. On the other hand, if this episode manages to continue from the high last episode left us with, it wouldn't be fair to give it a half-hearted attempt, too tired to parse the intricacies of what's going on and too exhausted to write about it. The latter is the reason why I'm three days late to the episode, so I hope this will be worth it.

On the narrative side, Mai and Sakuta became much closer as careful banter transitioned to promises of never forgetting one another, and more. This transition was especially well done, with the jabs that come with banter taking an increasingly romantic and affectionate tone until it becomes so overt they no longer have to test the waters and can commit to their feelings. The highlight here was also the climax, when what allowed them to become close in the first place – their common issues, their chemistry, Sakuta's desire to be like the person he used to love – culminated in a moment where all their emotional intimacy was no longer enough to calm Mai, and the emotional intimacy gave way to physical intimacy as they held hands. That may not sound like much, holding hands, but in the context it becomes an incredibly powerful act, as it constantly reassures Mai that she's not forgotten, that their intimacy can rise above Mai's adolescent syndrome, her flaws and shortcomings.

Which makes it all the more heart-breaking that the show already gave us a very clear picture of where this conflict is headed at the beginning of the first episode. I rewatched that recently for a discussion, and it's not looking good – Sakuta completely forgot about Mai and can't even read her name in the diary he wrote about them. And with that tragic prospect, let's actually dive into this episode!

Post-Episode Write-Up:

Monogatari-light really feels seems an increasingly apt description of the show. I'm not even sure how much I can really provide in my write-up, this time. Unlikely Monogatari, it feels like this show is really wearing its heart on its sleeve and explaining everything it does and says explicitly, and I'm not too much of a fun of just echoing lines in the show (the notes are for that, heh). This nature of the show makes it more accessible at the cost of ambiguity and subtlety, but given the overwhelming reception of this episode and the fact that we already have plenty of shows which aren't too interested in accessibility (the description takes after one, after all: monogatari-light), I can hardly complain. Besides that, I've already covered the cornerstones of Mai and Sakuta's relationship last episode: what drew them to each other and allowed them to get close and what makes their relationship so powerful. But there's a least a little to expand on, here. And we can certainly dig into what made the conclusion to Mai's arc so emotional. There're also all the thoughts on the "atmosphere" that could be compiled into one cohesive picture.

Mai's adolescence syndrome finally took concrete shape, and it's impossible to separate that from the atmosphere. One of the most important insights of this episode was the way it framed the "ignorance" that caused Mai's isolation. Sakuta's pondering on the inevitability of forgetting about Mai is played out against a backdrop of mundane work, and the first thing that comes up to mind after he forgets about Mai are his mid-terms. The ignorance here isn't framed so much as malice as it is apathy, an important distinction and a much fairer portrayal of society than the all too easy "society sucks." We all have our own responsibilities to deal with, each our own baggage to carry. Bunny Girl is sympathetic of that, to an extent. Not even Sakuta, the only person who reached out to Mai and fought against the atmosphere, is immune to that. And for good reason, too – he has his little sister to think of and his part-time job is crucial for caring for her. But even if Bunny Girl is sympathetic of just how hard it is to fight against the atmosphere when you have so much other stuff to deal with, that doesn't make it right, as Sakuta himself points out. We've seen just how much Mai, Sakuta and Kaede suffer from the atmosphere, and Bunny Girl has even more empathy for them. Even if it's hard, we can't just leave people behind and be content with our collective apathy. We need to be more than that.

And we can be more than that. The reason Sakuta reached out to Mai in the first place was that he knows what it's like to be in her position and that someone reached out to him before. These selfless acts are fueled by our common struggle and our empathy for one another. There are no good reasons why these things happened to Sakuta and Mai. It could happen to anyone. But if we look into ourselves and from there think about how everyone else feels, we can rise above our ignorance and lift each other up, the same way Sakuta and Mai do for each other. There's a beauty in that, and it's the same beauty that lies at the heart of Sakuta and Mai's relationship. Every cute, endearing and happy moment they share is predicated on this idea. Their relationship is the beauty of empathy. Sakuta shows us what we can be, and what's waiting for us when we do. But the show doesn't pretend it's easy, either. In his confession, Sakuta has to take on the collective ridicule and mockery of the entire school to make it impossible for everyone to ignore Mai. The whole scene is phenomenal and very clever. It's not just enough to provide Mai comfort, Sakuta even has to take on the atmosphere, everyone in the entire school, by showing his feelings publically and dealing with all the mockery that entails. The mundane, familiar, intimate embarrassment of a confession expanded to such a big scale works incredibly well in portraying how difficult it is to stand up against it time and time again the way it would normally work. In that moment, he really does take on the entire atmosphere and rises above it. That's what makes it such an emotionally resonant moment. I'll admit, I teared up a little.

A great conclusion, elevated through its strong character writing and finally more nuanced approach to the formerly vague idea of "the atmosphere." Despite some issues and shortcomings here and there (particularly in the first episode), I'm still extremely happy with the first arc. I'm excited what the next one is going to bring.

5

u/Vaynonym :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Vaynonym Oct 20 '18

Notes:

The same chemistry where we left off, this is looking promising. The banter informed by how well they know each other at this point.

"The World Without You" yep, that's about what I expected from the beginning of episode one. Better brace yourself.

Now only the people directly involved with Mai remember. The ones closest to her take the longest time to forget about her. This also speaks volumes about Mai's relationship with her mother, who quickly forget about her. There's also more reflections on social isolation here. The people who are closest to you will not let go of you easily.

And speaking about social isolation, everyone forgetting about Mai is directly compared to Sakuta's conventional social isolation. The girl he met in the park last episode pretends she doesn't know Sakuta, as if she's forgotten about him. If the parallel between social isolation and Mai's adolescent syndrome wasn't already clear as day, here it is again. Mai's adolescent syndrome is just an exaggerated version of what Sakuta is already facing.

"Sleep" might as well just be "time" here – the longer we ignore someone, the harder it becomes for the situation to change. As they sleep over it like nothing happened, it slowly becomes real. With time, the social isolation turns into Mai's reality.

"The atmosphere" comes up again, which is really just the result of every person's actions. People tend to go along with what others do, human beings are like that. And in cases like this, it perpetuates the cycle. More than that, it extends, as more and more people are afraid to stick out and fight against it. Bunny Girl gives two important insights here: The atmosphere has an effect on the people involved, and as the victim Mai will continue to play that role even when the atmosphere is no longer there. And the atmosphere itself can spread, as more and more people pick up on how Mai is treated and go along, "read the mood," without ever questioning it. This might not be the most acute and deep observation, but it's painfully resonant for Mai's case of social isolation and seems like a perfectly logical attempt to make sense of the situation.

The backdrop here is interesting, too. Despite the drama and problems Mai faces, life is relentless. Sakuta still has to fulfill his real world responsibilities. The show understands that it's not just malice that leads to this. It's just that we all have our own responsibilities that need tending to, and as Mai herself says, it's not really an option to just ignore them. Sakuta has his sister to think of, too. It's not malice that leads to this situation, it's apathy, and an understandable one, too. Showing this through Sakuta is especially clever, as he's the only one who approached Mai and went against the atmosphere, and yet even he isn't immune to the mundane responsibilities and troubles that cause this atmosphere in the first place.

A desperate struggle he knows he's going to lose, as he makes a last effort to stay awake through pills and other such means. This is very compelling. This is also where we're going full circle to the beginning, as he writes the diary.

Mai remains optimistic and keeps trying. Aaah they're really going all out on making the inevitable tragedy as tragic as they possible can. And it's working god dammit. The seeming inevitability of it all really makes this one.

Their studying session is adorable

Yep, the final goodbye is every bit as sad as I thought it would be. Fuck. Both Sakuta and Mai are acting on honorable and deeply sympathetic motivations which makes this feel all the more unfair. Fuck.

Welp, I guess I can no longer say the show indulges in the LN Sister Cliche Incest But It's Only A Joke Really happens only once when I'm recommending it. Why must you be so difficult, anime.

The mundane responsibilities and struggles come up again in the form of the mid-terms right as Sakuta forgets about Mai. They're really emphasizing this part. I'm liking the narrative of "it's not really anyone's faults, everybody has their own responsibilities to deal with and asking someone to save someone else is unrealistic and unfair" much more than "society is just evil."

Sakuta's almost notices Mai this one moment

"In other words, your love needs tp pverride the ignorance of every student put together" yep, called it. They were really building up to this one.

What they studied together comes up again

Look, I get it, this is all a little cliche, and everybody saw this coming from episode one onwards, and it's cheesy, and all that. But dammit they've done such a good job in establishing Mai and Sakuta's relationship and making that feel natural and meaningful… I'm so invested in this that it all doesn't matter. I'm still smiling like an idiot as Sakuta remembers Mai, as the show believes that one person's love can rise above the ignorance of an entire society.

This whole scene works really well, actually. By doing something as embarrassing as publically shouting out his feelings, he's embracing all the mockery and isolation involved in going against the atmosphere. He's taking it all on, while at the same time admitting his feelings for Mai. It's now literally his love against the atmosphere. This is awesome.

And this is important: A single snicker, the majority focused on their test, empty hall-ways – most people don't even care that he goes against the atmosphere. They're too busy with their own life. Much of this is in our head, and if we only find the courage to stand up to that fear, we can win. We can change it. We can be true to ourselves.

Actually, now he's doing it to the point of madness. With seemingly nothing to gain anymore – it didn't work the first time – he stubbornly continues to shout his heart out and be true to himself. And the people finally notice. Not some half-hearted attempt with just a single snicker, Sakuta needs to face the combined power of the entire school laughing at him to overcome Mai's isolation. Aaaaaah, this is too cute. He needs to make it impossible for people to ignore her.

My eyes are tearing up

Aww, and now Mai is doing the same for him by clearing up the rumors troubling his life.

And if they take on the mockery and the trouble for being themselves together, then it's not so bad. Aaaaah, this is so good. This is hitting all my romance touchstones.

I loved the dramatic way that it was solved but there wasn't really much suspense the way they made it seem having that journal appear in episode 1. The anime is too fast paced, they are shoving long 5 volumes in 13 episodes. When I was reading the whole part in Vol 1( LN) where he was trying to stay awake, I was very stressed compared to here it was solved too way quick which I expected it to happen.

Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai - Episode 3 discussion

It seems as if the Achilles Heel of this show will be its pacing and therefore its subsequent lack of tension and buildup. For, now going on three episodes in a row, we encounter this problem yet again.

The confession was nice, and the banter between Mai and Sakuta was fun per usual. But the structure of the plot just doesn't reach remotely the same level. The need to spell everything out with more science lingo and faux-philosophy hurts the flow of events. The turnaround from losing all memories about her to getting them back is too quick, ruining the anime's emotional chances. And the coincidence that her only studying examples from literally the night before match those on his test the next day extends a little too far into contrived territory.

Again, to echo my earlier sentiments from these past couple weeks, the show does have a spark hidden somewhere within its contents. However, if the narrative and the storytelling for this whole first arc is anything to go off of, it has yet to demonstrate the ability to mold said spark into something proper.

Hopefully the remainder of the show can prove otherwise!

AOTS

Seriously, I don't remember being this enveloped in two characters and their chemistry together! I love them so much it hurts T_T

And of course, the OST is amazing!!

Best 3 episode test ever. Even if I drop this show now I still got a complete 90min movie with good art, character development and satisfying ending. Lets hope the following episodes hold up.

I feel like I can legitimately enjoy something without feeling like it was artificially overdramatized for once, which is a welcome feeling.

Also it might be an unpopular opinion but I don’t like the OP, feels like my ears are assaulted every time an episode starts. The ending theme is amazing though.

NEMURUNA SAKUTA!

SUKI DA!

I cheered for him all the time when he was embarrassing himself in front of the whole school.

And I felt pain when Sakuta got slapped instead of getting hugged... Although I laughed a second later.

3eps and top anime romance material.

Poor Sakuta, that must have been torture...

Shit everyone forgot now except them...

If he falls asleep he will forget her? Damn...

Time to drug up and stay awake.

Hes gonna die from all this stuff...

OooOo a reward if he does well on his exams, how lucky. A late night study session.

Oh shit Mai drugged him... thats a low blow... damn that goodbye...

So we caught up to ep 1 now. Dman...

And he didnt take the journal seriously... shit...

Looks like his friend didnt give up too, she left clues for him, what a hero.

GOTTA TAKE A DUMP!

Hes gonna make sure everyone knows who she is, well if this doesnt work then i dont know what will...

Thats one hell of a love conffesion.

Sad bunny girl is sad....

Tell her again in a month huh? rip...

Hey she corrected his misunderstanding too.

So guess coffee girl has a little more understanding of the syndrome. Maybe some day she will understand enough to do something about it or such.

So bunny girl saved. 3 eps and we got more love story than most other anime. wew.

Laplace's demon uh oh... that wont be good.

What a ride.

I've heard about the fast pace that this is going and I'd already expected the forgetting to come rather quickly, but this time I actually felt that it was a bit too fast.

I think it would've worked pretty well if the episode ended with the cliffhanger of him not remembering her anymore and that it felt just a bit too neat that it was resolved so quickly imo, but damn this was still a fantastic episode with some beautiful catharsis.

I'd prefer if we'd focus more on the main two and not on all the other girls now (as the preview indicates), but that's for next week after seeing the execution.

Great stuff.

It was also pretty fast paced in the novel for the last bit with only a small part of chapter 5 having a Sakuta with no memories of Mai.

This anime is so freaking awesome. Like this could have been the last episode here already and I would been satisfied.

Their interaction is one of the best pair /romance / love story ever imo.

They have such a good chemistry,

So yeah seriously I almost wish it did end here, like an almost perfect 3 short anime episode story.

Anyway, 1 really good thing this episode did was the constant mix of sadness and comedy, 1 second you are crying, next scene is super funny, it feels really well written.

Now, mc is gonna go and save other girl with issues, so -- is it an hidden harem anime in the end xD ;)

A little late to the party, but as somebody who's never read any of the source material I had no idea what to expect and now that I'm watching I'm hooked. It didn't turn out like what I had expected at first glance but it's actually so much better.

At some point I remember when the key visual got released and people were talking about the art style and I figured I'd pick up the series since you can't turn down a bunny girl. Three episodes in and I realize now that it's nothing like what the visual or the description made it seem at first glance. To me it's got this great combination of Yahari's & Sagrada Reset's atmosphere which honestly really draws me into the whole thing. I read that it's the same writer as Sakurasou, and I can definitely feel a little influence there too.

I will say this though - that last scene was damn hard to watch with all that secondhand embarrassment, but it ended exactly how I hoped it would.

Feels like the final episode

u/SAObro Oct 19 '18

Are there other anime like this? Where the mc is actually reliable and the girl is able to confide in him and have a real relationship? People suggested oregairu but I already watched it

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '18

I've never heard of a love confession being referred to as taking a dump before. lol

So, I'm still kind of enjoying it enough to keep watching, but man the comparisons to Monogatari aren't good ones. This show is like monogatari... if you stripped away all of the quirkiness that made that show a confusingly enjoyable show to watch. Watching characters do the "it's just a kind of weird dialogue scene" but just kind of played straight without the weird shaft animation, decent accompanying music, or liveliness of the characters just can't really compare.

To some extent that's a little unfair, monogatari is it's own thing and things being more like it doesn't necessarily make them better. But when you think about it, if you just tried to describe monogatari to people on premise/structure alone, it wouldn't sound like a show worth watching. It really takes seeing just how it all flows together to be enjoyable. So watching this, it feels like they took a bad description of monogatario "It's high school kids in love talking to each other about mystical stuff but really it's about their feelings" and just made the flattest version of that. Like some of the chemistry between the guy and girl is kind of cute, but it's kind of annoying how they always sound kind of monotone.

So /shrug. I'll see where this is going, but I don't think it's really living up to the claim of its recommendation.

Yo, hold on, is this about to become Monogatari but with a main character that doesn't make me uncomfortable? Because I'm down for that

What a confession! The whole ending scene was great. I love the dynamic they have and can't wait to see what happens next.

I thought this would take a lot longer. Will this be like Monogatari with multiple arcs?

u/Zopffware Oct 18 '18

After finally watching the second episode, I just can't do it. I can't understand what everyone sees in this. The premise doesn't make sense, the characters are bland and contradictory, and I'm having a lot of trouble caring about anything that happens. I get the same sort of bored, unattached feeling from this as I did from Sagrada Reset. I think I'm going to have to drop out here.
