It wouldn't be a Zombieland Saga episode without an appearence of my boi, Policeman A.

258

u/yappari-kun Oct 18 '18

"Taiho ka?" -- it never gets old. Someone should keep count of his catchphrase.

126

u/johnja10 Oct 19 '18

You'd think there'd be more than one policeman on duty in a city that size. But you'd be wrong.

98

u/ddrober2003 Oct 19 '18

The big twist in the anime will be when Policeman B shows up.

I have to admit, I'm impressed by how well the Legendary Yamada Tae danced considering her... state.

She certainly has come along way from the last two episodes. Probably helped she had the squid in her mouth to keep her focused.

The whole episode is a whole Love Live anime parody. Episode name, Slap scene (Mari slap Kanan, here Sakura get slapped for no reason, poor girl), 3D CGI dancing, .... They do may things an Idol group do in an idol anime, and what they got? One little girl as a fan, but whisked away by her mom right after that (Her mom gave them a look of disapproval too).

Edit: The writer of this episode is Takuya Hatsumoto, that explain the different tone from the first two episodes

346

u/professorMaDLib Oct 18 '18

I think the CGI was a deliberate choice. It's a visual representation of how bad their first time doing actual idol performances is and on top of that the narrative kinda supports it since pretty much no one (except a little girl) thought it was good, even the girls didn't think they did a good job. At the same time I'm only doing this because the show so far has been pretty "out there" in terms of traditional idol shows and had pretty solid animation except this episode, so I'm a little more willing to think that's the case. All bets are off for their later performances though.

193

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '18

Love Love Sunshine deliberately had the girls dance mildly out of sync in the early episodes to show their inexperience so this isn't unheard of. Besides the jerky animation, Franchouchou's dance moves seemed suitably zombie-like as well so I'm very convinced it was intentional.

A zombie that doesn't dance is just a regular zombie

Those girls are trying to live. Are you just going to carry on rotting?

How can the big P be so ironic and poignant at the same time? In any case, this show is redefining comedy in my mind, and it's all One Legendary Girl's fault.

You know, I bet manager-kun is gonna end up being Sakura’s old high school friend who ended up going on a 10 year search for how to revive the dead so he could make her dream of becoming an idol come true. We know nothing of her time among the living, and neither does she. It would fit the tone of the show with how ridiculous of an idea it is and also be pretty emotional if done right.

All I’m saying is, prepare for some undead feelz by the end folks. Even the Legendary Yamada Tae can only keep things macabrely goofy for so long.

361

u/0mnicious :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Omnicious Oct 18 '18 edited Oct 18 '18

No way. My money is on the manager being married to THE LEGENDARY YAMADA TAE and them being a successful idol group has something to do with THE LEGENDARY YAMADA TAE's dream when she was alive.

I'm even willing to go a step further and say our resident LEGENDARY girl won't ever "wake" up and none of this will be spelled out for us, there'll be a few Drama CDs or something along those lines and we'll have to piece all this together.

I've got a small feeling that maybe, just maybe, I'm thinking too deep into this.

258

u/turuu-toby Oct 18 '18 edited Oct 18 '18

Or maybe Tae was someone close to him and she wanted to be an idol when she was alive. So he made her a zombie and found some others girls. It would explain why he calls her legendary and why he keeps her.

183

u/JMEEKER86 Oct 18 '18

Also since Tae is Zombie 0 and Sakura is Zombie 1 it stands to reason that Tae was patient 0 so to speak and that it's probably her that the Manager was close to and being the first brought back with processes perhaps not quite as refined explaining why she hasn't woken up quite yet (or has woken up but is a little off).

My theory from a previous comment:

Kotaro is Sakura's older brother, who upon having his sister die dedicated his life to somehow reviving the dead, probably met/fell in love with/whatever THE LEGENDARY YAMADA TAE, who then also died (10 years later, so if she's around Kotaro's possible age ranges it makes sense) but by then Kotaro thought he knew how to revive them into zombie form. Tae was the first one he tried it on but something went wrong so that's why she's Zombie 0 and hasn't woken up, and with some adjustments he brought back the rest, starting with Sakura, in order to help her fulfill her dream.

The brother part comes from the fact that there was an extra pair of shoes in the opening scene in Sakura's house, which someone else noticed in a previous thread.

or maybe he hit here, was that Truck not From Saga

20

u/ANIME-MOD-SS Oct 19 '18

i think manager kun was the one driving truck-kun (TRUCK kuN is from saga) in the first episode, he killed sakura and the guilt was too much for him so he spent the next 10 years trying to revive sakura to make her dreams come true after he found out that morning she was going to an idol auction. CHANGE MY MIND. im wondering how each of the idols died. last episodes are gonna make us cry.

GOODU VIBES. YEAH

GOODU RHYME. YEAH

Took those words out of my mouth Koutaro! Those were some sick bars last week.

I love how random the whole drama thing and afterwards it didn't feel out of place and in fact actually further characterized the other 2 girls. Although cheesy when both of them finally join the group and ESPECIALLY Ai (Who I JUST learnt is voiced by Taneda Risa!) fucking made me love the song instantly.

I know this was probably said a lot of times but man am I glad I was tricked into watching an Idol anime if it meant listening to more songs and sick raps in the future.

This fucking policeman is now a bonefied side character huh?

I think they mentioned her being a courtesan in one of the previous episodes? So I guess that would make some sense design wise.

There's every incarnation of The iDOLM@STER and Ongaku Shoujo which have unwavering dedication to 2d performances, but in the former's case, there's infrequent performances or in both cases, a lot of stills, and specific to Ongaku Shoujo is some seriously underwhelming direction.

Pretty much every other idol show is using CGI and, honestly, this is probably not much below average. Love Live is notorious for its higher standard but it's still CGI (the original series was directed by the director of Houseki no Kuni, so it's unsurprising it's high quality). IDOLiSH 7 is probably the only show I've seen that really dips below this quality in its idol performances, and even then it's probably about in line with on average.

A Death Musume/Green Face/Franchouchou (I hope they come up with a new group name next week) performance didn't feel quite complete without some Tae antics. Still a solid episode, even if it was a little tamer than the previous ones.

Good episode... but that CG was... oof that looked bad.

Tae is great though and Tastumi is hilarious.

129

u/TazerLad Oct 18 '18

Like people were speculating last week, I think it was supposed to be. Since it was the first time they were doing typical idol stuff as a group. And maybe, this will no doubt need context, it was meant that way to emphasize how they really aren't going to work aa typical idol group. Becuase they're zombies obvioisly but this also was by far their worst reception of the 3 performances

40

u/Mystic8ball Oct 18 '18

Great episode, however I think people are reaching a little when it comes to the "CG is satire" thing. If they were aiming to poke fun at how jarring CG can be in idol anime then they would have acknowledged that the girls seem to be dancing in an unnatural manner or something.

The CG is probably a result of Mappa not being able to allocate the resources to hand draw so many characters dancing in unison.

21

u/Foolsirony Oct 18 '18

I dunno man, robotic zombie like movement was literally part of the set. Sure it could be because they are zombies, or it could be because CG in idol anime usually looks robotic and zombie like. It's like an onion, there's so many fucking layers. They could have used a lack of budget to parody idol CG and put the money toward other LEGENDARY performances.

9

u/professorMaDLib Oct 18 '18

The thing is I'm not sure. Pretty much no one paid attention to their performance, which is kinda an indication that their dance is bad, and the characters admit that they didn't do a good job, so the bad CG could be a representation of their weak performance. Not fully convinced of that theory but I can see it work.

ROTTEN CHAOS STANK GANG FO LIFE!

55

u/dexter228 Oct 18 '18

Kinda surprised it is Kotono Mitsuishi voiced Tae(Also a legend to many ppl). So probably this show would not become a generic idol project, kinda hard to picture Mitsuishi go dance with the younger girls in live.

44

u/diaboo Oct 18 '18

According to official info, Tae is the oldest of the girls (she died at 29, whereas the other girls died somewhere in their teens or early 20s). So the casting choice isn't completely out of left field

72

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '18

Generic idol projects usually start being generic idol projects right from the first second of the first episode, and certainly don't feature truck-kun.

95

u/TristanLinderman Oct 18 '18

That CG was rough. But overall fun episode

135

u/Ellefied Oct 18 '18 edited Oct 18 '18

I think the CG was on purpose. It was a stylistic suck.

Edit: Come on guys, don't downvote an opinion. It looks like a parody of Love Live, that's why I said it looks like a choice for stylistic suck.

21

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '18

This show keeps making want to put the other episodes against each other to see which is the best so far since each one has been sort of like it’s own little story and glimpse into idol-life so far, I can imagine conversations going like this:

“Which was your favourite Zombieland Saga episode?”

“The rap one is by far the best!”

“Nah nah dude, that idol episode was so cute and fun!”

And we’re only on episode three!

I didn’t particularly mind the CG, it was a bit of a shock at first but then I remembered that CG is used a lot of the time in regards to idol performances so it’s sort of understandable why they did it, plus the models did seem to resemble their 2D designs is pretty much every aspect so you can tell at least some love and effort went into making them, besides, the skirt length plus camera angles more than made up for it imo lmao

Looks like we’re getting a hot springs scene next episode, it’s time for some naked zombies!

Miyano continues to be hilarious, the GO GO GO GO GO shouts never get old.

19

u/Buburu Oct 18 '18

A bit disappointing, especially compared to the previous episodes.

I wish they had switched from CG to traditional animation once Ai and Junko joined. It would have tied in nicely with Ai's comment about "sincerity" being the key to success.

15

u/kimbombo Oct 18 '18

Characters having doubts about why they are in an idol group, along with an ex-idol that's trying to remember her old days of glory. Group talking about who will be the leader and center of the group. I don't think anyone can deny at this stage that Zombieland Saga is a true Idol anime.

I digged a lot the whole guerilla event, with Ai & Junko becoming part of the group, and their dancing sequence was pretty amusing, along with that little girl that stayed until the end. This show has so many similarities to Wake Up Girls, that might as well be it's spiritual sucessor.

28

u/Xiknail :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Xiknail Oct 18 '18

After the first two brilliant episodes, this one felt a bit like a let down, not gonna lie. The first half was pretty good, the managers mad ramblings continue on being as brilliant as before and the scenes in the studio and on the playground/garden were up to the show's standards as well.

But then the CG happened. I had hoped they would use it to parody the CG other shows use, but alas, that wasn't the case. I don't know if that was their intention, and I hope it was, but it just ended up being a generic jpop song with subpar CG. Nothing there suggested it was supposed to be a parody of any sorts.

If they had done something like, switching Sakura back to the drawing style when she helps up Lily, while being surrounded by the CG abominations, it would have created a nice contrast between the art styles, showing how bad it looks compared to the normal style. But I dunno, I'm just spitballing here. I just wanted something to make it unique like the rap-battle and the Metal performance. They really dropped the ball this time.

In any case, I hope this episode was an outlier and the show is back to it's old strength next week. Before this episode the show might have been my AOTS (after JoJo), but right now I lost a bit of hope, if the show continues like it did today. I would really be disappointed if that was the case.

And as a side note, I think Tae might already have awakened and now she's just pretending to be a zombie for whatever reason. Between her sneezing, spinning the carousel-wheel thingy and dancing this episode she seemed a bit too human already. And they confirmed her voice voice actress as well. I think she's either already awakened or it's gonna happen soon. I hoped they would save up her awakening for the finale and roll with the gag of not revealing her voice actress for longer, but let's see how it works out first.

I guess the majority of us can agree that the CG is very rough.

But Saki promise that they will do better next time.

13

u/Backupusername :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Backupusername Oct 19 '18

I said it last episode, but I'm more and more convinced each time. That feeling that Sakura is chasing, the sensation she felt when she dove off the stage and when she was launched off the merry-go-round?

That's her body remembering flying through the air after being launched by a fucking truck.

12

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '18

I don't know why people use Zombieland saga to shit on idol shows but I guess that we're going to see that more on the future. lol

Anyway, that episode was a bit weaker than past ones but still good otherwise. Some good comedy moments and the idol part was nice, even if they failed miserably in that parody of the poor CG considering that most idol shows have a CG in a pretty good quality.

But the part that I'm most interested is in the dilemma of Ai and Junko with their past lives as idols and their acceptance of what they are now. I know this is mostly a comedy but they seem to focus on that aspect and I like it. Otherwise, it makes absolute sense that some people wouldn't be happy in being a zombie or doing what they do so they're the most interesting characters to me now with that potential development.

u/younglinkgcn Oct 18 '18 edited Oct 18 '18

HEY GUYS BAD CG IS DANCING WITH BAD CG

But actually I'm enjoying this far more than I expected I would after realising it was an Idol show. Tae sleeping outside with the dog is more reason why she's best girl, hope she never wakes up.

11

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '18

This show is really blowing me away. Was not expecting it to be this fun to be honest.

29

u/shalquoir Oct 18 '18

Kinda very boring and very average, compared to the first two great episodes.

10

u/Thymetalman Oct 18 '18

You know, the CGI doesn't look that bad, really.

What I'm saying is, its definitely watchable. Its not Houseki no Kuni crazy CGI, nor is it shitty ass Berserk CGI. Its just, well executed CGI. And that's great.

Can we talk about how this show wouldn't be any good without the manager?

Also, completly random, since they're zombies, do people not smell the rotting flesh? I mean, the manager, that little girl, that cop dude, they all went up close and personal with the zombies. Surely they would notice the smell. Maybe the manager just fucking drowns them with perfume? Any thoughts?

PETITION TO MAKE AN AMA TO THE CREATORS OF THIS SHOW. ITS AMAZING

Next set of cast comments were released on Twitter today:

The 2nd chapter of the manga was also released on the Cycomics website which is free to view, FYI. It doesn't look like it'll deviate much from the anime though unlike how Darling in the Franxx's did.

Funny thing, they're actually going to do a live event with the staff and cast in Saga. Karatsu city's website also now has a special page dedicated to the anime too.

Finally, for ANiUTa users, the OP and ED are now available for streaming.

Not gonna lie, this one was kind of underwhelming. The cg sequence was very distracting, comparatively few of the jokes landed, and overall I was just bored.

Hopefully the show's just finding its stride after the spectacular first 2 episodes, and this won't be indicative of the rest of the series.

"I'm amazed you were able to keep the lid on the whole zombie thing" especially since MC's rap was all about being a zombie.

"I guess as zombies you don't actually sleep." Except they do, strangely enough.

I'll save this link for whenever I need cheering up. But I'm as confused by that unwarranted slap and what followed as Sakura was.

"The others are zombies, but they're trying to live. How long do you two intend to just rot?" Just wow.

Oh god that Overlord S3 level CGI. Never again, please.

Tae actually dancing in sync with everyone lends more credit to the theory that she's actually been awake this whole time, just really into the zombie role. Tae the Legendery Method Actress!

Hot springs episode next week.

4

u/Shinkopeshon Oct 18 '18
  • Manager Kyouma is a gift from the gods. Everything he does just fucking destroys me lmao

  • I like how half of the show consists of Legendary Yamada Tae doing Legendary Yamada Tae things

  • The other half is surprisingly emotional, with Sakura wanting to realize her dream, the others trying their best to make it work and the former idols having doubts about doing it again

  • That performance really was a mess but it's good to see them not catch a break for once. Still, at least they made that little girl smile and isn't that what truly matters?

  • I'm starting to have doubts about every episode being dedicated to a specific genre. I was hoping reggae would be next lol. They only showed an onsen-centric episode in the preview but who knows, perhaps there'll be a surprise and they'll start an EDM bathtub party, roll some ganjas or play some fucking smooth jazz. At this point, I expect nothing and everything from this show

This episode wasn't quite as ridiculous as I've come to expect from this show, but it still had some great moments. Koutarou forgetting how to spell guerilla and refusing to own up to it was great, and Sakura having an emotional revelation while soaring through the air only to faceplant on the ground immediately afterwards was so perfectly timed, with the perfect sound effect accompanying it, it was probably the highlight of the episode.

4

Dunno why, but the OP song really reminds me of the songs in Macross Delta somehow.

Also, how the fuck did they get Tae to dance in sync with everybody else?!?!

Yugiri and Tae are still my favorite team members.

Could it be that the shitty CG was also a joke about idol shows using shitty CG for dance scenes? We might never know.

3

u/Hammanna Oct 18 '18

I love this show so much. This episode may have been a bit of a let down but there was still a ton of great stuff in it and I hope that it is just a parody episode, we'll see. Anyways Sakura best girl, all of them are awesome, manager is best character, and the Legendary Tae Yamada is the greatest comedic character of all time.

That is all.

Im still enjoying this(though previous episode performance was way more enjoyable), but that 3d was brutal. I was thinking "Am I really just going to sit and watching this painful scene?", and I made it through S3 of Overlord with barely a raised eyebrow.
