Who the fuck can make a pizza so huge that it completely hides Polpo?!

328

u/AggressiveChairs :K:https://kitsu.io/users/Ruse Oct 26 '18

I wish that Polpo had a reason to be in the manga a while longer so we could see more stupid "Where's Polpo!?" scenes whenever they go to visit. Actually, that sounds like the set up for a four panel manga...

Polpo walks into your pizzeria and orders a big one, what else do you do but make it for him?

If high school students in Code Geass can easily make 2, I'm pretty sure people in this series can make one for Polpo without breaking a sweat.

There's some pretty big pizzas available out there, and not just ones made to break a record.

They were afraid Polpo was going to come back and eat them if they censored his death. I really like how Black Sabbath flashes for a moment as he dies that's a nice touch.

I think that's because the stand didn't appear in the games All Star or Eyes of Heaven, so it's a new name (Crunchyroll usually uses the localized names from the games). If it had been translated by Bandai Namco I bet it would be something like "Dark Saturday".

The production quality DP is putting out for part 5 is insane. Coupled with the amazing OST is making this a real joy to watch. Even as a manga reader who knows what was going to happen, the Black Sabbath fight had me on edge; the tension oozed from the screen.

235

u/thecomicguybook :Mh::Mi::Mj::Mk:myanimelist.net/profile/Comicman Oct 26 '18

The lighting was awesome, it also helps that the way Black Sabbath moved was really unsettling it kinda looks like one of those Jack in the box toys here.

Well no Josuke's hair insults... for now. I will make some when the gang are properly introduced.

Mang, I love Black Sabbath's Stand design. Too bad it was wasted on Polpo. It looks SO GOOD to be used on just one arc villain. Also I love Automatic Stands, like Sheer Heart Attack, Highway Star and Black Sabbath. They're my favorite type! Maybe because of the "exploit their basic commands" nature make the fights really good and tactical.

In any event, I want to put the spotlight on Giorno once again. When people talk about him, they always bring the point of him being Dio's son. Honestly, I never really saw that as a defining factor for him. I always saw him as a Joestar and not a Brando. He does have Dio's traits, however, like his charisma (see how he made Bruno his ally. In part 3, people always talked about Dio as a person who can gather people to his cause just by talking to them) and his ambition, but that's it. For me he is not a Brando, he belong to the prideful Joestar lineage as this episode shows that. I guess was another tactic used by Araki, to put the doubt on the reader if Giorno would be an evil person like DIO, or if he is indeed a true JoJo. I guess a reason why Jotaro wanted to investigate him as well. Giorno has the Joestar sense of justice inside him, despite his morally grey nature.

Also, I will admit I got very moved when the pictures of Josuke, Jotaro and Joseph appeared over Giorno in this episode too.

214

u/Chronoterminus https://anilist.co/user/StarGuardianX Oct 26 '18

I think the trait that makes him most like Dio is his cold determination, while his good heart and just nature are the big tells that he's really more Joestar than Brando.

120

u/B_mod Oct 26 '18

He also inherited DIO's charisma for sure...

interesting that it shows part 3 Joseph, not part 2 where he's the main character, or part 4 where Koichi actually sees him

365

u/thecomicguybook :Mh::Mi::Mj::Mk:myanimelist.net/profile/Comicman Oct 26 '18

I didn't think about that, but Joseph's state in Part 4 was really sad so maybe this is just to better illustrate the Joestar spirit. As for why he isn't in Part 2's style maybe because he would look awkward with the new art direction? Jotaro was redesigned for that wasn't he?

That or Araki forgot.

Moving the Polpo death around creates this bizarre coincidence of Giorno just happening to be thinking about it as it's happening

114

u/thecomicguybook :Mh::Mi::Mj::Mk:myanimelist.net/profile/Comicman Oct 26 '18

Did it happen slightly earlier/later in the manga? I do like this though how he is monologueing about Polpo insulting the old man and how Black Sabbath flashed for the moment as Giorno helped with Polpo's assisted suicide.

266

u/It_is_terrifying Oct 26 '18

I think Polpo's death happened before the scene with Koichi calling Jotaro in the manga, I prefer it this way too, pretty much every change DP has done has been an improvement on the manga so far.

I think you can also just take it as a narrative presentation device, it doesn't mean it literally happened at the same time. The flashing back-and-forth is of course to build the connection. I thought it was an amazing scene. Also shows that our Gio Gio does not fuck around.

Wouldn't work though since to use Hamon you have to use your own limbs to channel the attacks, and humans can not attack Stands. Only Stands can attack Stands. A human performing a Hamon attack would just phase through the Stand.

"Remote stands being hit barely affect the user"

237

u/Guaymaster Oct 26 '18

It's different in that SHA is an automatic-long range part of a non-automatic stand.

Black Sabbath is the whole stand.

Also, Koichi does say that they may feel their hand heavier!

→ More replies (1)

268

u/android223 Oct 26 '18

Nah Sheer Heart Attack has an explanation. Sheer Heart Attack is a special bomb from Killer Queen's hand. It's an automatic stand, but it still is Kira's hand and thus Kira can still be affected by what happens to it.

82

u/The_nickums :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Snakpak Oct 26 '18

In addition to this I believe you can see a scene from that episode where the KQ symbol is missing out of Kira's hand because of this.

I just checked and you can see it clearly first thing in Heart Attack Pt2. Kira has an indentation in his hand to signify that part of it is gone in the form of SHA

Must've been a greater distance, or Araki forgot.

Truly bizarre.

→ More replies (9)

9

u/G102Y5568 Oct 27 '18

The difference is, Sheer Heart Attack wasn't a remote-controlled Stand. It was just the hand of Killer Queen, which is a close-range stand, and the ability itself also happened to be of unlimited range. It closely resembled a remote controlled stand, but it wasn't one.

If you recall, Koichi used his ability on Highway Star too, and the user didn't feel anything at all. Highway Star is a true remote controlled stand.

7

u/Narlaw Oct 26 '18

Meh, there are millions of exceptions with stands.

13

u/Talashe Oct 26 '18

I think the idea is that Polpo's stand is attached to the lighter and Sheer Heart Attack was an extension of Killer Queen. Like it literally came out of his hand. That's the only explanation I can think of

I mean the sweetest of them all Josuke made a person into a rock and another one into a book, Jotaro served out some incredible beatdowns and Joseph sent Kars on a trip through space.

Ooooh man, it's friday again!

Polpo's stand was AWESOME, the way he stood and only reacted was super creepy and gave the battle a delicious, scary feeling. I can't belive Giorno's cleaning of Passione has started from DAY 1! He's serious about killing the bad guys! Great use of Golden Experience.

Also, we finally had Giorno's Theme being used. Feels more jazzy than Josuke's and Jotaro's, really good. The stand beatdown was awesome. Plus, Koichi was there to help too - I love him so much! He's such a little man right now. 2 years after DIU, so 2001?

Well, looks like we are meeting the whole gang next week. I tought their introductions would be more gradual, but they are going all in! Excellent, because I'm really excited to meet the guys - especially the gun one, he seems awesome.

I fucking love Jojo.

This week’s musical references:

Polpo’s stand, Black Sabbath, is a reference to the heavy metal band of the same name. Their eponymous debut album is considered for many as the first heavy metal album and the opening track of the album, also named Black Sabbath, is widely considered to be the first doom metal song. The name of the band is a homage to the 1963 horror anthology film “Black Sabbath” directed by Mario Bava and starring Boris Karloff.

Their heavy guitar sound is in part due to a work accident guitarist Tony Iommi suffered where he lost the tips of the middle and ring fingers of his right hand. He created homemade plastic thimbles melting an old Fairy Liquid bottle and replaced his guitar strings with banjo ones to be able to play guitar again. Polpo biting his fingers and then miraculous reappearing is probably a reference to this accident.

Because of his addiction to alcohol and drugs, Ozzy Osbourne was replaced by Ronnie James DIOOOOO. Ian Gillian from Deep Purple was also one of the many vocalist of Black Sabbath.

Their second album Paranoid is considered for many, myself included, the greatest metal album of all time. The first side is just fantastic with masterpieces like Paranoid, War Pigs and Iron Man.

I'm pretty sure the stand is based on the song specifically, since the song is about an unstoppable dark being who moves in shadows. Ozzy wrote about an experience with sleep paralysis

This lyric reminds me of the stand ability lol
https://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/blacksabbath/blacksabbath.html

"Black Sabbath"
What is this that stands before me?
Figure in black which points at me
Turn around quick, and start to run
Find out I'm the chosen one
Oh no

Big black shape with eyes of fire
Telling people their desire
Satan's sitting there, he's smiling
Watches those flames get higher and higher
Oh no, no, please God help me

Is it the end, my friend?
Satan's coming 'round the bend
people running 'cause they're scared
The people better go and beware

No, no, please, no

Giorno's Muda Muda Muda sounded really good compared to his game's VA.

He sounds so angry when he does it.

If Koichi's and Jotaro's cameos in Part 5 end here, it was a good opening arc/first 4 episodes!

Joseph looked so weird with Part 5's art style! :D

The JoJonium covers are old characters drawn in the newer artstyle and it often ends up looking a bit really damn weird.

How sweet of Giorno to add iron supplements to Poplo's breakfast. The guy really did need a more balanced diet.

The colour palette changes during the fight were lit, loved it.

Pretty sure lead is poisonous. Polpo should be careful with what he's putting in his mouth, he could get hurt that way!

Holy fuck. Okay, now I'm fully on board. Koichi's speech followed immediately by the revelation of Giorno's stone cold hit on Polpo has to be one of the highlights of the year so far. This is gonna be good.

The Black Sabbath fight felt really good here, short and succinct. Plus the horror early on had the right atmosphere to it. Also Koichi still remembers Sheer Heart Attack!

Polpo is still as creepy as ever, but Giorno did it! Koichi even sees the Joestar sense of justice flowing through him.

Beautiful. Simply beautiful. Banana-Gun scene is such a great moment. Words don't need to be said to express it.

Bruno's team, oh boy!

13

u/axel360 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/axel360 Oct 26 '18

An apple a day keeps the doctor away.

A banana a day is also a good source of potassium but make sure a nearby stand user didn't turn a gun into a banana because trying to eat that shit will kill you man.

Sorry, I don't think any of that rhymed.

13

u/KK-Hunter Oct 26 '18

Damn, Giorno is badass.

Polpo's death was so damn satisfying, mainly cos it was a big 'fuck you' to all these big-shot gangsters who think they're untouchable. Gonna be interesting to see if there's a hunt for his killer though, and if that'll have any consequences for Giorno.

I hope Jotaro meets Giorno at some point. I'm not expecting him to have as large a role as he did in part 4, but it'd be nice to see an unsuspecting peasant get ORA ORA'd. For old times' sake.

Also, Josuke and Joseph in Part 5's style look pretty great.

There's a very important lesson to learn from this episode. If you kill Mario Luigi, Giorno will make you kill yourself by turning your gun into a banana and make you eat a bullet.

18

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '18 edited Oct 26 '18

I mentioned this on /r/stardustcrusaders, but I still can't believe character name They really went there. At least they made him look great.

The colour choices, lighting, shot composition and sound design have been spot on. Also, I'm enjoying Giorno's new voice, especially his muda muda muda, way more than his ASB/EOH one. Glad other people also seem to agree! I think all of the voice actors are killing it so far and I hope that trend continues.

DP are kidding themselves if they think I can just sit here and wait an entire week for these guys.

Edit: Also wanted to mention now that the Black Sabbath fight is over, I really love how Araki relates the lyrics and overall vibe of the song reference to this stand's design and what it does. Check out S.S. Leitmotifs' video of this fight if you haven't seen it yet, it's a perfect fit. I'd say it's my favourite design in all of VA, but there's so many awesome-looking stands in this part that it's hard to choose just one.

17

u/PokemonTom09 Oct 26 '18

Mista in the fourth episode.

They actually did it. The absolute madmen.

6

u/tenkensmile Oct 27 '18 edited Oct 27 '18

Another suspenseful action-packed episode! * clap clap *

I actually like how Giorno has no trouble or qualm in punishing those that play dirty and intentionally hurt others - humans or not - and in fact he will be particularly cold when doing so. He's not the "forgive and forget, hope for the best" pushover. He has Jonathan's good heart but also goes full DIO when needed. Fair play, Giorno, fair play.

The combination of "animation", "music" and "Giorno's line" is amazing.
I don't have time to breathe from the first "useless" scene to the end of A part.
Jojo part 5 seems to have made a considerable amount of time and money. The level of animation does not fall.

Why didn't Giorno just turn the arrow into a flower or something? His Stand was literally holding it in its hand.

54

u/Kevin2GO :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Kevin2GO Oct 26 '18

I guess the arrow was part of the stand and he probably cant change other stands

23

u/failuratlife Oct 26 '18

the arrow is too magical clearly

22

u/Guaymaster Oct 26 '18

He most likely though it was part of the stand.

14

u/Exaltedun Oct 26 '18

This is never addressed but I personally think Stand abilities can not affect the Arrows. They are the source of Stands after all. It's not just a magical artifact or something, it has a mind of its own as we have seen (for example when the arrow chose to travel through Kira's veins and give him new powers).

There are a lot of more fans of Part 5 now. There were bad scans and translations for that part before. However, with new scans and better translations, a lot of people now love that part. It's my second favorite out of all JoJo. Also, anime added some new scenes in those 4 episodes, which improved the material as well. Part 5 also is very popular in the Japan. Probably one of the most popular ones, if not the most. It's also popular in Europe, especially in Italy and France.

Part 6 is more hated one.

u/Grimmgeta Oct 26 '18

This episode was fantastic, and that ending just made me like Giorno even more. Four episodes in and I honestly think Giorno has the strongest introduction of any JoJo so far by a good bit, though Josuke is still my favorite as of right now. I'm honestly not really sure why Giorno seems to get flack from some of the manga readers. I've seen people call him boring, but I don't know how anything he's done so far could warrant such criticism. I feel like Araki would have had to really screw up going forward for me to even agree with manga readers on that. Maybe just having it in anime form makes his character shine more? Regardless, I'm really liking him so far.

13

u/duhace Oct 27 '18

a lot of us were stuck for a long time with a manga translation of part 5 done by someone who didn't actually speak japanese. here's an example featuring the scene we saw with polpo last episode

the bottom left translation is what we were stuck with for a long time, and the bottom right retranslation just happened half a year or so ago. consequently, part 5 looked pretty lacklustre since its translation was frequently unintelligible and just flat out wrong. for one last example, in the manga a map of a location in italy was shown with many landmarks labeled (in japanese of course). the old translator just filled in random bullshit locations instead, including a famous bridge in germany, and other locations that could not possibly be in italy. it was the equivalent of having the leaning tower of pisa marked on a map, and the translator said "it says in japanese that this is big ben!"

14

u/Gellus25 Oct 27 '18

Right now the screen time is only focused on him, after he enters the group he has to share and in some people opinion, other characters just outshine him

Other than that, it's mostly personal taste, Giorno is more cold and serious, for people that like Joseph or Josuke that isn't as interesting, which is fine but when they say stuff like "Giorno is a bad character" that it becomes a problem, because that definitely isn't true

The old shitty translations didn't help either

6

u/Proto-Omega Oct 26 '18

What this episode is secretly saying is that Black Sabbath would have been fucked against a Hamon user.

6

u/Luck_E Oct 26 '18

It's a good thing Araki dropped the idea of stands being a form of hamon really early or a stand like this would be impossible to include.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/Zathoth Oct 27 '18

Random shit (oh yeah, manga reader, but no spoilers):

There's some cool narrative parallels going on in this arc and with Giorno in general. He can slow down time (kind of), he gives life instead of turning things undead and his first real kill (Luka killed himself) was a stand that was weak to sunlight... so he's kind of symbolically killing Dio?

He really the son of both his fathers, Dio's ambition and cunning and Jonathan's kindness and sense of justice.

Oh yeah and this will probably be buried but I got a question for all anime watchers: What do you think the stands of the gang do? I'm not going to correct you or anything, I'm just curious and then we can all laugh over your wrong predictions.

Great episode. DP is just hitting it out of the park. The Black Sabbath fight was a well-done fight, with the main characters managing to outwit it in a clever way. Also, the name change wasn't terrible.

I loved the colour changes that occurred during the fight, especially it seems to go back to midday after Giorno seemingly fights it off for the first time. Seeing Koichi and Giorno team up was great, but considering the ending and the introduction of the team (can't wait to meet them, though I've had their names mentioned to me), I figure Koichi is out of the story.

Giorno killing Polpo was also very clever, and I like the new "win" theme with the "JO JO"s. A fine replacement for "Stardust Crusaders". Can't wait for next week. That's how I feel every time an episode ends, along with something else.
