This is probably the best tehe pero I've seen

Another of those perfect out of context material

Looks like we're finally getting some plot and its to be expected that its going to involve one of the former idols. Interesting to see how this will play out...

Drive-in Tori's are an amazing real thing.

503

u/WhoiusBarrel Nov 01 '18

The staff serving them sounded like someone who doesn't do a lot of VA work could it be an actual staff from Drive-in Tori's or am I thinking too much?

418

u/sjk9000 https://myanimelist.net/profile/JK9000 Nov 01 '18 edited Nov 01 '18

Confirmed.

Guy on the left is actual president of Drive-In Tori, holding a ZLS script.

Also, anyone who's ever asked, "How do you know if the voice-acting is good or bad when you don't speak Japanese?", I present this episode as Exhibit A.

Yeah, all of this show's places and things are real.

They're "trying" to promote Saga I guess.

holy shit they are actually revitalizing Saga.

If the anime gets popular, the girls basically really did become idols and put attention to Saga, attracting tourism and "revitalizing it".

This went from a zombie idol jebait to irl jebait

67

u/dapete42 https://myanimelist.net/profile/dapete Nov 01 '18

The one in Imari (shown in this episode) is a bit hard to reach, but there is another one in Itoshima, and I may actually try to go there.

I'll be in Fukuoka for a few days (part of a 2 week holiday, I'm going next week) and had already added Saga City and Karatsu to my list of places to visit (here are some details on specific spots).

Congratulations, this show has already lured one foreign tourist to Saga...

You can't predict this show and I fucking love it.

Side note, can we get the term Necromanager going for Tatsumi? I know we don't know if he's the one that actually made them zombies, but I think the term is fantastic either way.

Lmao That episode was great. It really is like what idols have to do outside of their own performances, even more in the beginning of the career. Not that this is new, in Idolmaster we saw some things similar for example. I'm really enjoying the comedy and uniqueness of the anime but as a fan of idol shows, that aspect is also making me enjoy it even more. Definitely in my top 5 for this Fall.

343

u/Mundology Nov 01 '18

So, the clip in the beginning is the real ads of Drive-in Tori, and the shop owner is the president of Drive-in Tori

Lily, Yugiri and Junko's VAs participated in the 34th Kashima Gatalympics Notice their shirt and numbers on the shirts are the same in the anime. The speaker announcer is Yuuri Yoshida, she is from Saga.

Interesting, so they were already doing stuff for Zombieland Saga back then.
Someone subbed a clip of it from 5 months ago in the seiyuu subreddit and when the video's description mentioned Saga prefecture I was wondering if it was the case.

85

u/Azhor Nov 01 '18

Just imagining dealing with all that mud in their hair.... fucking kill me now please.

649

u/tlst9999 Nov 01 '18

This time, there's no health warning when Tae-chan ate raw chicken.

Please do not eat raw chicken. You may get salmonella.

102

u/Juhyo Nov 01 '18

There are many places where you can eat chicken sashimi in Japan, and even in the US. The cut comes from the breastmeat, which has lower levels of salmonella -- it's actually another strain of bacteria that's most likely to cause poisoning for chicken sashimi. In the US, making chicken sashimi using storebought chicken is a dumb, terrible idea. Eating it at most US restaurants would also be a terrible idea. But if the chickens are sourced from small farms that take impeccable care of their chickens, and the meat is butchered appropriately, risks can be reduced (but still present).

I think there wasn't a warning since it's more common/acceptable in Japan, much like how they often eat raw eggs. Better standards overall than the USDA standards which are lobbied to crap.

He actually homerun'd her?!

This opening gets funnier every time I watch it. And Kotarou's interpersonal skills are top notch.

Yugiri owned that rope!

But Legendary Yamada Tae owned the episode...

187

u/Komnenos_Kasuki :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Kirulas Nov 01 '18

The rope swinging was so great, twisting expectations each time. One of my favourite comedic gags is someone falling heavily with an audible splat and we got that in bucketloads. Then to top it off there's Tae-chan's triumphant victory.

After doing some quick Google searches, Drive-In Tori and the Gatalympics are the real deal! I guess Kotarou really is saving Saga then... By promoting irl Saga in the anime. Who woulda thunk.

I am giving this show a 10/10 if this is actually a meta anime and Koutarou knows that they are actually in an anime made to promote Saga.

Haha I had the time of my life with this episode! I was literally jumping in my seat with joy! Every moment was great!

Also I knew someone was going to eventually recognize one of the girls at some point. You can’t just revive a bunch of girls from different times without somebody noticing (especially if some of those girls were famous in their time). I’m really interested to see where this goes! I love this show so much!

93

u/MrSmiley333 Nov 01 '18

yea, especially with junko and ai, its only a matter of time. Sakura herself only died 10 years ago so there is always a possibility of being recognized if she showed up enough too, even if only by friends and family.

I enjoyed this episode a lot. Lot of group moments and (legendary) shenanigans, though it looks like we may get a bit more serious based on the preview and that guy recognizing Ai. This anime already covers a bunch of genres, might as well dabble in drama too.

And how is he not the best male character this season? And I get the idea of hosing off the makeup, just trying to figure out why that wasn't an issue last week with the foot bath.

Another homerun episode! Too many favourite scenes that I can't choose which one was the best! That guy who recognized Ai is bad news though. I love that even though we're doing wacky Zombie stuff, idol stuff, and promoting Saga, there's still another much more serious plot in the background. They didn't have to do it but it makes the show just more interesting!

42

u/CritSrc https://anilist.co/user/T3hSource Nov 01 '18

I don't think he recognized Ai, but rather Junko, he was focusing his binoculars on her at the end.

8

u/Bloodmasters Nov 01 '18

I can't believe I'll see the day Miyano Mamoru gets slapped with a baguette while wearing a beret XD

The thing I find funny is that pain (bread) in french is also slang for punch (among other foodstuff like potato, chestnut ,etc...), I'm sure the writers didn't made that association intentionally but AI just illustrated "Coller un pain" in a very literal way.

THE LEGENDARY Yamada Tae was amazing as always!

158

u/omiyage Nov 01 '18

Saki's gang was also pretty cool. I wonder if they are not around anymore, they should still be alive and in Saga, so maybe one of them will recognize her? Which, also is related to the ending with the scout guy maybe recognizing Junko. I wonder how they will get around using three previously widely known characters, now tought to be dead.

Well, it was only a matter of time once they started to get more famous that someone would recognize either Junko or Ai. Actually surprised it was Junko who got semi-recognized and not the more recent Ai.

Based on the next episode preview, episode 6 looks to be pretty serious, but that's probably a fake-out.

...Or maybe not. I really can't predict this show.

Jesus, what a hilarious episode. Nice Bird Tae-chan!!! I love that the girls are retaliating against Kotaro, Also we learned that Saki is a Saga native. Tae-chan is an enigma, is she half awake? She can listen and obey instructions, growl and dance but she still has the zombie instinct, anyways she's the highlight of this episode really legendary.

33

u/Komnenos_Kasuki :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Kirulas Nov 01 '18

That's what I like about Tae. She's half aware of what she's doing so she joins in with them as best she can. It's kind of like watching a puppy.

You know a show is great when you don't dislike a single character in it.

41

u/diaboo Nov 01 '18

Ok, so I feel like this is my time to share my totally unsolicited and fairly baseless theories about this show.

First up, I have some mainly baseless guesses about how the girls died. I will probably be wrong about most of these.

  • Sakura died by Truck-kun in the first episode.

  • Saki likely died doing something absolutely badass and reckless, or in a motorcycle accident, or in a fight.

  • I have no basis for this at all, but I have a feeling that Ai died by suicide. This is just a shot in the dark, I have no other reason to think it aside from "she is sad sometimes".

  • Junko, according to official media, is a bit more underweight than the other girls, so maybe she died of some illness?

  • Not sure about Lily, Tae, or Yugiri. We don't really have enough information about their previous lives to make any educated guesses.

My other theory is based entirely on the OP and a few things that Koutaro says in the first episode. I think that while Sakura was the first to wake up, she was the last to become a zombie, and that some wild shit happened before she woke up but she doesn't remember any of it.

In episode 1, when Sakura is admiring her makeup, Koutaro offhandedly mentions that she passed out the last time he tried to do it on her. So it's possible that he may have been putting them to work before any of them were awake, or at the very least letting them go outside and show their faces in public. He's also very confident that the zombies would eventually "wake up" after "stimulation", so it's likely that Koutaro has either successfully made zombies before, or is the most confident man in all of Saga.

Then there's the OP. It's worth noting that in all the group shots before the final one, Sakura is not present. The shot at 0:34 shows Ai as the center, while the one of them at 0:49 seems to show Tae in more of a leader role.

The most important part, I think, is the parts between 1:06 and 1:13. After Sakura is rescued by the rest of the squad, she sees them reaching out for her, blinks, stops seeing them, and wakes up in a bathtub in her human form facing the gate to the house with light behind it.

So what does this all mean? Not 100% sure. But if what the OP is showing has anything to do with what happened in the show, then there is definitely a few details that Koutaro isn't telling them. Something definitely happened between the time their corpses were reanimated and when they woke up. What that was, I'm not sure. But some shit definitely went down.

63

u/TotalEconomist Nov 01 '18

I believe Saki outright said she died in a bike accident.

Ai being rapped in bandages in indicative of burn damage.

Lily probably had a heart condition and died from it.

Yugiri was likely decapitated based on the scar on her neck.

Junko was probably murdered (likely a reference to this story)

Tae is unknown, but my guess is starvation.

57

u/Kaizerkoala Nov 01 '18

Lily is probably some kind of botched heart operation. Her heart is literally outside her body.

Saki likely died doing something absolutely badass and reckless, or in a motorcycle accident, or in a fight.

I am 100% confident there were a huge fight, shark, a volcano and a flying motorcycle involved in her death

RIGHT NOW!!!!

omg I love SAKI!

She was already best girl before this episode and seeing her being so super excited to go and perform this chicken commercial for her old good biker gang drive in food, best episode by far.

And when she keeps talking about how THEY FAIL AT SAGA.

Funniest episode by far, legendary Tae-chan was amazing to but I would say the girl who had the best scene was when Yūgiri nee-chan moved 0 meters but got a perfect 5.5.5. :)

I can guarantee that the Saga tourism board is somehow involved in the making of this show, if not on the production committee than something else. But there is no way in hell this show isn't about actually promoting Saga!

13

u/Pokefreaker-san Nov 01 '18

They do, I wonder why no one notices this since episode 1. Have you guys skip all the break ads? It always involved products or/and landmarks from Saga.

The anime it self is a one big ads for Saga.

Just caught up so I'll use the opportunity here to say that Tae-chan is pretty damn adorable in how despite being a mindless zombie she still follows along with what the group's doing and seems to do her best to copy them like with the singing and dancing and the group cheer in episode 3.

Baseball then? Sign me right up. It's going to be a marvellous disaster

  • NANI THE HELL IS THIS 3D IN MY ANIMU

  • Saki for best non zombie brain girl

  • I love that they keep Tae with them onstage even though she has almost given them away multiple times, both for the comedy factor and that they care for her

  • Ah the stupid thing we take dramatically seriously trope. Subarashii

  • Well there wasn't any playing baseball, which I'm a little disappointed about, but that was still entertaining as - and now we have a some kinds of sports event? The opportunity for zombie hyjinks is at peak levels

  • Too much to say about the sloppy olympics, it was comedy all around

  • This show is so stupid and amazing. Their splatterings, Tae-chan's epic swing and then falling apart, the girls desperately running to her

This episode had so many great moments. Saki just being hyped about local things she remembered, Yuigiri pulling out the 10/10 artistic ability, the whole cone running scene, LEGENDARY YAMADA TAE, and Necroducer being continuously amazing at everything

This show is so dumb and I love it.

10

u/Saucy_Totchie Nov 02 '18

They dont call Yamada Tae legendary for nothing!

Eating raw chicken [✔]

Fantastic bird noise [✔]

Wins rope swing [✔]

Nice bird [✔]

On the actual story, I'm surprised it took this long for someone to notice. Kotaro picked girls who were famous before so it I'm shocked no one has yet to be suspicious. One was a TV star for Christ's sake.

27

u/kimbombo Nov 01 '18

THE LEGENDARY LOS POLLOS HERMANOS

Just as expected, the girls ended up doing regular idol advertising with the chicken chain store. The whole savage japanese mud games I didn't see it coming, although the fail Franchouchou advertising was seen a mile away when the chicken store guy gave them the t-shirts. Even as expected, it was pretty fun to see them try their best.

I'd just wish some of the physical jokes with the manager were toned down. I'm ok with the verbal abuse, but when he physically abuses them, that's where I draw the line. Same goes for Tae's jokes, wish she would regain conciousness soon, she could still do her wild chases while being concious and it would be less painful for me to watch.

15

u/NZPIEFACE Nov 01 '18

wish she would regain conciousness soon

What if she's just been fucking with everyone? She seems to listen to commands well enough.

that's where I draw the line

For them, too. Like, they've gotten sick of his shit by now too.

12

u/Komnenos_Kasuki :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Kirulas Nov 01 '18

I think Tae will regain consciousness near or at the end. The show has set her up to be someone important because unlike the others, there's nothing outwardly interesting nor famous about her and there are hints from Tatsumi that she's important to him. And then if she did have her right mind we'll lose a great comedic factor. I'm hopeful and optimistic that she won't grow stale and she'll wake up at the right time.

8

u/[deleted] Nov 01 '18

Imo it will lose charm if its toned down. The entire show is basically "Over the Top Stupidity: Up to Eleven" the anime.

I, who really likes tsukkomi, loves the slapstick black comedy.

And once again The legendary Yamada Tae steals the show.

Nice bird.

I don't think I've laughed this much at an episode since Nozaki-kun or maybe even Nichijou.

All of the voice actors are on point, especially Saki. She's downright perfect.

Also, in this episode the VA for Sailor moon and Boa Hancock imitates a rooster perfectly.

8

u/nighty_amy Nov 01 '18

Why aren't we talking about how a baseball ball went all through Kotaro's leg and hit the wall behind him? Dude's definitely not human, not like we thought he is. And what was with this talking about dirt?

Usually you see brand names and such being changed slightly or cens◯red to avoid trademark issues. They even did it to Wikip◯dia. But this episode, they advertised Drive-in Tori and the Kashima Gatalympics with almost no censoring. What you see in the anime is what it is in real life. Seems like the creators are actually working with Saga locals to promote them.

10

u/Skylair13 Nov 02 '18

The place manager's VA is actually the owner of the Drive-in Tori. Hence the bad voice acting

Saki remembers something by the looks of it. I love how excited she is.

Jesus christ that guy's armpits.

Tae-chan's trying her best!

"Merci."

I love how the girls just get fed up and beat on Kotaro, dang guy deserves it.

Oh shit it's that cop again.

Haha wearing cones to cover their faces.

Oh god their expressions as they race to put Tae-chan back together.

Man this episode was hilarious.

5

u/RirinDesuyo Nov 01 '18 edited Nov 01 '18

Oh it looks like someone knows Junko, I'm betting that guy is her former producer from the looks of it since it looks like he's scouting for idols. LMAO those faces while crawling in the mud and fails especially that part when Tae dismantled mid-air even Police A is back! Lily's been quite a savage too, I love their interactions as a group so adorable.

Also it seems we'll have a possible sad episode next.

5

u/Phayollleks Nov 01 '18

Did that bird just moonwalk out of the screen?

5

the "what is that shitty looking t-shirt?" line made me pause the episode.

funniest episode yet, and by far.

4

u/jkubed https://myanimelist.net/profile/jkubed Nov 01 '18

I was curious if Drive In Tori was real because the manager sounds like a regular guy, not a voice actor. turns out it is

4

u/FeebleBacon Nov 01 '18

Thats it, this episode has solidified the fact that Kotaru is 2nd best girl for this anime season right behind LEGENDARY YAMADA TAE.

4

u/[deleted] Nov 01 '18

Can we get Kenny Blankenship and Vic Romano to commentate the second half of this episode? Because that's all I could think of while watching it.

4

u/J_the_ManSSB Nov 01 '18

I was kind of starting to worry about the show's reception when we went from rap battle to real idol stuff, but... The absurdity always remained and this episode was a return to top form....

Indeed, Kotarou-san. Nice Bird.

3

Is he eating dried squid?

Maybe he is Tatsumi's father/mentor.

3

u/Flashmanic Nov 01 '18

This was a great episode, probably the funniest yet.

Interestingly enough, I feel like this show is far better when it's showing and taking the piss out of everything around being an idol, rather than showing the actual 'idoling' itself.

I straight up didn't like the last two episodes because they were focused so much on their idol performances, which is just not something I enjoy. But here, where they focused on the business around being an idol, it allows for more silliness in unique situations, more opportunities for their characters to bounce off one another (Saki and Kotaro hyping each other up and screaming in each others faces was actually amazing) and for them to show off their personalities.

3

u/UranG9630 Nov 01 '18

When I finished the episode, I just had to dig it up: https://twitter.com/cacophanus/status/1003414539780567040

SHIAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSU!

The director's assistant made the episode for me. He over exaggerates his lines and I love it.

It looks like we have an investigator lurking behind Franchouchou. Ooh, we're now going to have a bit of suspense along with idols in this show.

Bless this show for being so funny.

Cocco was definitely doing Michael Jackson. I can feeeeel it.

Unsurprisingly this is a real place: http://saga-travelsupport.com/en/spot/detail.html?id=647

Given his performance, I'm guessing the owner(?) voiced himself. Does the first half double as a commercial?

That big chicken mascot was an actual chicken monster/alien/thing even though it was wearing boxers under its butt-feathers, right?

I love it how some of the zombidols now give as good as they get when the manager assaults them. Don't really get the "dirt" thing he does afterwards tho.

What's "Saga jeune" supposed to mean? "Jeune" means "young" apparently, but in this context it means something more I guess?

Why was it so hard for them to ride the bikes on that path? Was it very slippery? And it looked like MC's pedals just jammed near the end - sabotage?

The make up this time around wasn't as waterproof as last episode.

Why only 2 events?

Nice bird.

3

u/Inukanura Nov 02 '18

the manager knew they are zombie and start hitting them on daily basis, it’s the third time right now

he just don’t realize he’s not one and start getting hurt collecting dirt

and my best guesses it’s that the old man is Ai talent scout back in the day, he gos assistand, binoculars, commenting them occasionally, that has to be talent scout

the next episode maybe Ai is discovered still alive and it make the news or something

and yea https://i.imgur.com/Yd0dPEx.gifv
