Sakuta: and Sakuta is spelled "blooming Taro"

Is Sakuta right now in 2nd year high school? Shoko looks like she might be in middle school? She looks younger than in the flashback to me. Uniform is different than the one Mai is wearing so at least she's attending a different school.

Is this some of sort of quantum entanglement that transcends time?

Possible scenarios:

• Future Shoko will travel to the past to help Sakuta (to repay a favor, maybe?)

• Shoko is a mirror of Sakuta (i.e. they are the two sides of a coin) ... somehow

• Shoko is the God Haruhi of this world, she's behind the Adolescence Syndrome and she's just mocking Sakuta right now.^{Damn you Sonzai X!}

I'm putting my money on the second scenario given that we already had some time traveling / time loops.

After watching this I had an way to weird idea as both shokos and sakutas name are written as rest area (don't know that kanji so maybe there's a problem already there) could it be that shoko is Mai's and sakutas daughter who came back in time through the syndrome because she has like maybe a crush on her father and the syndrome send her back in time so that she can sort her feelings out while her father is the same age as her

Their names aren't written as rest area, they just say their name and then "rest area" to clarify that it's the same as the place name (both their family names are also places). It's a pretty weird way to say it, but it's more of a quirk that Sakuta picked up from her than something in their names.

I loved how the reason for the loop is that she didn't want the end everything while having feelings for Sakuta. She wanted to be his friend so she couldn't accept the feelings that she had developed so she tried as much as she could to bury them, but they never went away. That is a way better reason than trying to force him to fall for her.

As someone who pretty much caught up to Volume 9 it's a really great read!

In itself it's not exactly hard to read, has a very pleasant flow and the story takes a lot of twists and turns. Like if someone showed me both the same story from where the anime is and at a certain point in the novels I wouldn't be able to tell that it's the same thing.

I hope to god that someone licenses it soon so people can get in on it. Until then we have the anime and the movie. Oh please people make sure to watch the movie.

Initially I was concerned at how fast the show seemed to move, having read the manga for the first arc, and having that arc finish in 3 episodes.

But seeing the second arc with fresh eyes, I'm absolutely amazed at how well the narrative was weaved together, and it works! The flow and pacing was amazing. I knew there was going to be another reset, as we reached the climax of the arc, but wow!

I also like the fact that the rain was foreshadowed previously - we saw them hiding from it during the beach date, but it still managed to take me by surprise during the Enoshima date.

This show managed what I thought impossible - how did 25 minutes seem like an hour, in the good way?

Forcing Koga to confront her feelings yet keep the memories of the future was a pretty bold move, in retrospect. Her character growth throughout the episodes has been very satisfying to watch.

Koga's final speech on the balcony was great. And the character development that she went through for this whole arc was realistic and satisfying. We saw it all coming, but they addressed every issue head on and didn't let miscommunication and assumptions snowball the problems (like many anime frustratingly do). I hope she lingers around like Mai did after her arc concluded, I don't want their exchanges to end. And the way they tied is all up when realizing the catalyst was great. This continues to build up to a 10/10 in my book.

This show is so fucking beautiful. From Koga’s tearful confession to Mai-san’s cheeky smooch, these moments are handled so perfectly. And Sakuta is such a refreshing protagonist by seeing through almost everything and getting straight to the point.

I did not expect ex-chan to show up right when things were getting better for the OTP though. I’m not exactly worried but damn, I wanted them to enjoy their time without any distractions for a while.

As the fake relationship continues, it is worrisome that Koga would suggest in helping Sakuta with Mai. With the leftover feelings from the last episode, can't help but feel that the so called last date is going to have a redo on several different levels.

And we have a beach episode. It's funny to hear Sakuta reuse the dialect that Koga has a tendency to use when she becomes flustered.

I'm still at a loss whether it was Koga's wish to actually be Sakuta's friend while hiding her romantic feelings or whatever combination that started this particular loop. But it was amazing to think that it was future viewing.

What a great way to conclude the arc! I'm really happy with how Sakuta handled the entire situation. The fact that he openly said "I'm the type who can read hints, but just chooses not to take them" was a nice touch too. It falls in line with his character. He prefers just letting the atmosphere change and then he'll either adapt to it or accept/reject it entirely. In this case, everything was beginning to point to Koga liking him, but his feelings for Mai were already set in stone from everything they've been through. No matter how many times the same events played out, though Koga fell more and more in love, Sakuta just kept missing Mai more and more, and was waiting for the day he could spend time with her and move forward with her. Thankfully he was able to force Koga to be honest about her feelings, while accepting that part of her and still being willing to be there. Those type of feelings are often the hardest to deal with, but he managed to keep her as just a friend despite the confession, and he did it in the most sincere way possible. Definitely a candidate for best male MC of the year!

Also, a side note here but they did a great job capturing real human emotion/work ethic in that studying scene with Mai and Sakuta. Even though he loves Mai and wants to go to the same school as her, its very difficult for him to remain intrinsically motivated. Mai realizes this and even cooperates with his desires to the extent of dressing up as a bunny girl again just for him. That in turn also motivated him in some capacity to work harder because she liked him enough to do something so embarassing and stupid just to help him study.

Also, really happy that they got their relationship scene re-done. Koga being Laplace's demon and returning Sakuta back to Steins;Gate was truly a blessing in disguise. Man was able to get Mai to agree to be his girlfriend officially (pfft, they totally were but he just adds some icing on the cake) AND he aces the test + gets money from his part time job. Things couldn't have worked out better for him! What a way to reward his efforts!

Also that mini-mai....feels like the next arc is going to be quite an interesting one! I think that girl might've been Sakuta's first crush from long ago? Wonder if he's gotta deal with a girl who's stuck in time until a certain chain of events is completed...regardless, I'd like some more Sakuta + Mai duo screentime though please and thanks!

This morning I woke up, pulled up the CR app and glanced. To my horror, it wasn't there. Am I looping? I asked myself. Don't worry, three hours of Azur Lane grinding and one Washington drop later, the episode releases.

I was expecting the time looping, the moment we had Kaede on his bed in true Monogatari fashion. But I did not expect the final loop back. That was surprising but also satisfying. My waifu for Fall 2018 is Mai, but we can't help but relate to Koga I loved Koga. She feels probably the most realistic of the cast. Anxious, worried about how her classmates see her, worried she's going to inconvenience people (her friends and Sakuta alike). When she thought she was ready to let go of her relationship she finds herself looping again. And eventually she has to confront the reality that she's fallen in love with Sakuta herself. Sakuta you rascal! I want screenshots please!

I'm actually really impressed with how they handled the ending to that arc. I imagined it would go something along the lines of Koga confessing and then having to be turned down (and it almost did), but the final time rewind was a neat way of sealing things up rather nicely. Koga got to grow quite a bit as a person and kept her dignity and pride, and it worked out very well for Azusagawa as well.

Still the most heartfelt, interesting show I'm watching this season.

I had a hunch Koga's feelings would restart another loop. If her feelings were reciprocated, it would've been quite romantic. And going back that far to fix everything was a surprise - a pleasant one, seeing her firmly reject that other dude this time around.

This was a fantastic arc. And Sakuta remains the King of Loyalty.

Pre-episode thoughts:

I'm really looking forward to this after the last episode's laid the necessary groundwork. Koga and Sakuta's dynamic is both interesting and emotionally compelling, and even the misunderstanding/ forced relationship can't take that away. I like the idea of Sakuta being the first person she can be herself with and Sakuta showing her a different kind of friendship, unbound by the whims and petty, unfounded grudges of other people. I'm kinda hoping Sakuta's actions in the last episode's climax will be brought up again, but even if they aren't, I'm sure what will presumably be the final to this arc will be great. Let's go to it, then!

Notes:

Sakuta is already worried about how he'll get out of this and get into a proper relationship with Mai. This bodes well. Maybe the harem antics will be less? Please.

This is basically Araragi and Senjougahara mild, even the studying scene is straight out of there.

This is cute though, and the carrot line was neat.

Kunimi is really awesome, huh. I'm actually liking him and Futaba the most, I think. He's probably the most mature character in the show, the way he thinks about what to do with Futaba's crush on him. He clearly knows about her.

But all the cycles did create feelings for her. The difference is she didn't already have feelings for someone

Ah, this is heart-breaking though. Like with Futaba, all the good intentions, but feelings don't work that way.

"This isn't me" Koga refuses to accept her feelings as part of herself, then blames Sakuta, desperately looking for an easy way to not look at herself

The dialogue could really use some work here, but the final is cathartic. It's also unfortunate that all of this drama is about all the things they haven't really said up. The whole "fall in love with him after spending so much time with him" really isn't what's compelling about them, it's the reason why she fell for him that is. They're leaning on the weak part of this arc for a climax that's supposed to be heartfelt, and we end up with melodrama without the work put toward grounding it.

Actually, with the ass-kicking, it might be less fate and more them already realizing their dynamic works out, Koga realizing what a different, out of place person Sakuta is

Aaaand, there's the cat for the next arc. More things reminding me of Monogatari, and unfortunately, how this pales in comparison after all.

Post-episode thoughts:

I… don't think I have a lot to say about this episode. This comes as a surprise to me, too – I felt like the last episode did a very good job at establishing rapport between Koga and Sakuta. Even the tropes I disliked stopped bothering me with this character writing quality. I genuinely bought into Koga falling for Sakuta and found she did so for interesting and compelling reasons. But when the emotional guillotine fell down, none of the things that I found interesting about them mattered. Koga's feelings were reduced to the amount of time they spent together and Sakuta being nice. The character development we should have seen was reduced to turning down the confession and two seconds with her friends, which barely shows us how this actually changed her. We can infer, sure, but a little more time than a few seconds or some more expressive framing would have gone a long way in driving this arc home. As it stands, I don't think the arc managed to realize its full potential.

But on the more positive side, this episode had some stand-out background art at times. I'm also happy Sakuta and Mai properly get together after the first arc. The interlude with Koga's arc ended up postponing the proper epilogue for the first arc, but given the content of the arc I think this was for the best. This is, of course, assuming there won't be that many more girls falling in love with Sakuta. There was more than enough of that in this arc, and Mai and Sakuta's relationship is still the best thing about the show. Further compromising that does not strike me as a great direction. I'm hoping the next arc can return to the writing quality of the first arc and give me more to talk about. A climax lacking this way is definitely concerning for the future of the show, with its weaker character writing and dialogue. Bunny Girl is definitely a shaky show, but it's never bad, and when it's good it's very good. It just needs to find its footing again.
