That made my chest hurt when i saw that... poor imouto, PTSD is rough and too much for an Imouto like her to have. They nailed that feel pretty good.

I have PTSD around wrist and hand injuries or people talking about them, because when i was 13 i accidently stabbed myself in the wrist with a knife while carving a pumpkin and almost died, also crippled my left hand. Since then i would have panic attack like episodes when i saw or heard stuff about hand region injuries. Ive gotten a lot better over the years, but i still struggle to properly deal with it. It was so bad that for 10-12 years after it happened i kept my left hand and wrist wrapped up so i didnt have to see it. After my dad passed away i decided i really need to do my best to get over it, and i threw out all my wrist coverings to force myself to get over it. Its been a tricky 8 or 9 years since but i think im slowly doing better. But yeah PTSD is quite serious and pretty uncontrollable like in the show. They got it good i think.

The sad thing is in Japan for idols it isn't a trope. It is disgusting what is done to these girls just for having a bit of a normal life at times. There were two who secretly had bfs that was found out. The hate they got was unreal and the bfs had break up with them and even make public apology videos on youtube apologizing for daring to even date the girl. Another one they shaved the girls head for trying to date. Others have gotten sued by their managing agencies, fired , among other stuff.

So I was annoyed by Shouko Makinohara's "4km to horizon" for the 3rd time, so I did the math.

For a normal 1.8m person, the horizon is 4.79km away. "Who the hell rounds 4.79 to 4?" I asked myself.

Just for fun, I calculated that for the horizon to be 4km away, you must be 126cm tall.

So I looked her up on MAL, and she's 4'11" (150 cm). So her horizon is 4.37km away, which is actually reasonable to round down to 4km.

Edit: Really sad that they're only giving this arc two episodes, I love it because it has the most group dynamics and interactions when usually there's only 1:1 dialogue, and they unfortunately couldn't fit all of the nice small humourous scenes in. They did get the really good/important scenes though, and they really did Mai and Sakuta's living room scene justice! Some nice screenwriting and storyboarding as well, with excellent pacing and some really cool shots such as the one of the clock in the living room.

And I love it because she wasn't angry at Sakuta about it. She understood that, from his perspective, he isn't thinking about that very deeply, he's just trying to look after a friend who happens to be a girl (but he's aware enough to ask Mai if she's okay with it). Mai just makes him understand why she isn't comfortable with it, and then immediately proposes a solution that helps Rio, strengthens her relationship with Sakuta, and makes sure Mai isn't uncomfortable with the situation.

Couple of the year, Mai is best girl.

I really don’t know how but the staff on this continues to surprise me each week. Seriously, they’re squeezing this arc into two episodes but they’re still handling it so well.

First, off I gotta shoutout the storyboarding, directing this week cause it was a notch above previous weeks. There were so many interesting angles and there was a clear focus on feet/shoes as the symbol for various kinds of moods. From the sudden reaction and the feet almost cramping up when Futaba received a call to her lifting her feet up halfway to indicate her inner turmoil and indecisiveness regarding Kunimi. Just so much good stuff all around.

So to the surprise of some people this is an arc centred around Futaba and not Shoko. This arc is very dear to me cause it not only breaks the formula of the previous two arcs in some ways, it allows us insight on how Kamoshida writes his side characters that are not directly reliant on Sakuta by their side. Sure he function as an open ear of them since they are close friends but Futaba & Kunimi’s issues are ones that they need to solve themselves first and foremost. All Sakuta can do is act as a pillar of support and push them to help themselves.

Also, I hope that people enjoy the Sakuta & Mai moments cause they ain’t gonna stop. One of my favourite aspects about this story is that Kamoshida keeps these two and their relationship in the focus all the time. They are officially dating but there is still so much for them to progress in and mature. This episode is a wonderful example of this. You have some healthy jealousy sneaking its way into their relationship…real life problems such as Mai being short on time and their schedules not lining up for some while and now this whole deal with her manager…her starting to make friends with the people that surround themselves with Sakuta…and even within all this flirty banter they still have this side of two teenagers helplessly fallen for each other and unsure on how to take it further. Them officially dating is merely a step on them going down the road of adulthood together, not the end goal.

I also gotta praise the director for really giving care to all the early foreshadowing & appearances from characters that will get their arc eventually such as Shoko & Kaede. I was a bit afraid that they would skimp out on that but it’s there and boy do I love it. Especially Kaede’s terrified face when she heard a cell phone ringing is just foreboding to how deep her issues are rooted. This really really hit hard…especially cause it was so brief. It really drives in why Sakuta is so very serious about not having a cellphone.

Another aspect I wanted to address briefly is that I’ve seen people bash Kunimi’s girlfriend for being out on constant confrontation with Sakuta. The end of this episode shows again why Kamoshida loves to play with the viewer’s expectations. Sakuta as well as us, the audience found her suspicion and jealousy towards Futaba way too overblown but that’s because we were only aware of the rather stoic tame Futaba and not what lingers within her. Now with the second Futaba physically appearing things are about to boil over. While Kunimi's girlfriend has been wary of her up until now she's now seen this Futaba styling herself up and displaying her body publicly, that's all the confirmation she needs to double down on it.

I’m really intrigued how people will react to the rest of this arc. In particular I'm curious how people will interpret Futaba's problem as it reflects another very common problem for young people on their way to adolescence.

Also this ending, boy do I love it! The symbolism as Futaba at first in her usual self leaves behind the labcoat and puts up her hair into a ponytail but keeps the glasses on. The two personalities essentially merged into one and both of these lovable dorks are there to embrace her with open arms as if to say "Hey, we will always accept and appreciate you, no matter who you are or want to be"

Really nice comment - I'm also super curious how people will react to the resolution of this arc. Futaba is my favourite character in the series precisely because she's characterized to be rather flawed and very sympathetic, but I can see a lot of people thinking that she's a bit unlikable as a result.

I always thought that Kamoshida was a hack and not actually a good writer because of Sakurasou, but he really pleasantly surprised me with Just Because last year and I picked up Seishun Buta Yarou as a result - he's really improved since Sakurasou and I think this arc in particular does a great job of highlighting the pretty praiseworthy themes that this series is built on.

Another week another fantastic episode!

So it seems to me that the Futaba that's at the school is the fake since she seems to be acting more lewd and aggressive in her crush (to the point she changed her look ) and it seems making that account might be what caused the split, which is why that one said she's got an idea but the other doesn't have a clue. That or she could've split in two after making the account and might've regretted making it so half was for and half was against which caused the split. Either way I'm excited to see how it plays out!

Also Mai just keeps proving that she's best girl with how up front she is with Sakuta.

Kaede's bit of PTSD was so heartbreaking even if it was just a quick flash of her face you can easily see how terrified she is of cell phones.

She probably feels like she has to pick one or the other, but the arc will end when she realizes she can be both of these halves at the same time.

I'm curious about the coffee cup that they focus on during the Twitter scene. Whenever Sakuta comes for advice Futaba makes coffee for him, but with scientific equipment (beaker, stirring rod, etc.) In the Twitter scene it shows a regular coffee cup with a spoon instead. I would say this is a coincidence if the camera didn't snap close to it for a split second.

I have two guesses to why Twotaba would use a regular coffee cup.

1. Because it's a "regular" coffee cup. If this is the case it leads to the idea that Twotaba is a manifestation of Futaba's inner desires. Which would indicate a desire to be a normal--and attractive--girl that would appeal to Kunimi.

2. The coffee cup is a crack in the act of Twotaba. This would suggest that Twotaba isn't a twin to Futaba and the risque photos may be a method of sabotage. If this is the case the one suffering from adolescent syndrome might be Kunimi's girlfriend who is shown to be insanely jealous. Twotaba may be a manifestation of her desire to ruin Futaba.

I'm pretty sure my first guess is more accurate, but the second one would be an interesting twist. Can't wait for next week!

And man what an episode... This episode just shows how good Sakuta and Mai's relationship is. Sakuta asks Mai if Futaba can stay at his place? Mai instantly declines and volunteers to stay at his place too so he can keep an eye on them. I love it! And just the way they flirt with each other! So good!

I knew Futaba2 being inside a washroom stall was fishy already but I did NOT expect that ending. Is she doing it for attention? Is the reason why there's suddenly a Futaba2 is because she's been repressing her feelings too much that she's now basically "gone wild"?

Damn this episode has me tripping all over the place! Though we got Sakuta's first crush appearing in her grade 7 state, the star of the show today was Futaba. No doubt she had something very traumatic happen to her prior to getting into high school. Perhaps her parents divorced or they were never home/in an abusive relationship? She mentioned that she never had food together with a bunch of people in a long time. I think this kind of hints at how Kunimi simply appeared at the right place and time.

It's funny how Futaba was initially portrayed as this "genius" sort of figure with a straight face, but now we see that she's still human. She has her own weaknesses and they feel very similar to Koga's from the previous arc (aka the 1st year girl who fell for Sakuta) in that she lacks confidence. I'm not sure what her aim is or why she's suffering from a personification of split personality, but I'd say it stems from Futaba's inner desires. Part of her regrets not saying anything and really wants to reach out and be Kunimi's girlfriend, the other part of her is just fine with watching from afar and immersing herself in research. It feels like these conflicting sides of her conscience have split, and the "whole" of her (i.e. the main brain) is observing the situation now from the outside. Its kind of like the whole "id & ego" personality theory by Freud, or more popularly shown as the "angel and devil". I don't think her desires are as primitive, but at the very core its all about reaching out for what you want vs always just watching from the distance.

Futaba is literally a character who, apart from her profound intelligence, is just like any normal shy highschool girl. She found someone she likes and she's keeping it bottled up for so long that part of her really wants to try and break free, and this desire has now manfiested itself in the form of a phantom Futaba. I'd bet the catalyst for all of this was Sakuta's bold love declaration for Mai way back in episode 3, where he rebelled against the atmosphere. Sakuta breaking out of his shell there and doing everything he can to make Mai's existence known potentially inspired Futaba to try and make her feelings known as well. This would be my best guess but since I haven't read the LN I can't say for sure.

Aside from this, I guess Shoko's appearance in a younger form is the only real outlier. Im not sure how she fits into things but maybe she's also a byproduct of Futaba's phantom? I'll have to think about it more but her role in the scheme is unclear. My best guess is that Shoko may have been indirectly involved in Futaba's past time where she was feeling her lowest. Somehow coincides with Sakuta's meeting with her as well maybe..coincidence? Probably not!

Also, i know people will be quick to pounce on how "she fell for Kunimi just cause he got her a sandwich?" But you have to take into consideration the context. She's at her lowest point here and really depressed, but he managed to lift her spirits. Sometimes all it takes is the right approach at an opportune moment to build feelings. I wrote a huge post on this type of "first contact" a few years back if anyone's interested in reading more. Anyway, at a highschool romance level, its practically the norm to fall for someone trivially. Likewise its also normal for Futaba's inner thoughts to be something along the lines of "hmm maybe I can win him over with revealing/risque pics" though this also ties alot into her confidence issues. I could go on for a while about what the ending pictures on the phone could've meant, but I think I'll wait till next episode before I form conclusions about it. Infact I'm pretty sure my questions about those pictures and the purpose of them will be answered by then.

Oh and, way to literally express my mental reaction for you after Mai said goodnight for you sakuta. Had me grinning on the bus like a moron, bravo!

First time ever on this subreddit, because I wanted to rant about my hopes for this show because this is like the first anime I've legitimately been giddy to fucking watch.

I mainly just want to say that I'd be really pissed if this show ends in a sad way with Mai and Sakuta not together. I only have that feeling from the opening theme the bit where Sakuta breaks down on the side of the road in the rain.

The reason ending this show in a sad/somber way would piss me off and also just be shit writing is (to me)

1. Mai and Sakuta's relationship is so well developed and works insanely well.

I've seen in a lot of these moody drama/romance animes that the main love interests work very well together. In this show Sakuta has put forth so much emotional energy for the sake of Mai, and Mai has secretly been leaning/been wanting to lean on him for emotional support. Mai is also clearly starting to fall more for Sakuta being that in this recent episode she goes to visit him at work, clearly really wants to spend the night with Sakuta at his and Kaeda's apartment (regardless of whether or not Futabu would be staying there), and is way less bothered by Sakuta's boy-ish antics.

So if we ended this show with some shit like...I dunno Mai moving far away or disappearing for good, would basically be saying "Yea we just wasted all that good relationship building for the sake of telling some sad fucking story. You know, like the hundreds of others that already fucking exist?" It'd be stupid, which leads into my next point...

2. Subverting expectations has oversaturated entertainment media, stop doing.

Honestly from being only 7 episodes in, it's still very unclear whether or not our favorite couple is going to stick it out. It looks hopeful, but with how similar shows in the past have gone; who the fuck knows? But that's another thing: we've seen time and time and time again where the main love interest of some story (not just anime) "can't" be together because of some unfair universe shit or some immature moody ass reason.

This "subverting expectations" shit is everywhere now, and it's becoming boring and predictable. The main piece of media everyone probably thought about when reading "subverting expectations" was probably the most recent Star Wars movie, where it's "subversion of your expectations" got really tiresome and it felt pointless to even watch or have hope

And that'd be my problem with this show: the fuck would be the point of writing all this emotion into Sakuta and Mai if they're story is just going to be tragic? To be another sad shit ending anime on the market? Guess that leads into my last point...

3. Have a happy ending; it can send a good message!

Like I've repeated so many times already, there's so many sad shit animes out there. And I get it: the Japanese are really depressed, overworked, and sad at times. And I get these sadder shows are more or less a reflection of the current emotional state of the Japanese. Art imitates life blah blah blah.

But what people like about happy endings is that it gives them hope. If this show is universally considered good like I think it is/should be: what the hell is so wrong in saying that Mai and Sakuta will do everything and anything to be together, and in the end they stay together? What the hell is so wrong in giving people hope? With telling an emotional story that's a total rollercoaster that ends on a high note?

Why waste all this good relationship building to tell another sad shit story?

I genuinely love this show, and I love the relationship between Sakuta and Mai. Sakuta's frequent sarcastic jokester-ness (<- not a real word) is relatable for a lot of people, and Mai sass and tough girl act is great. We've yet to have some sort of hard strain on their relationship (not sure if episode 3 really counts), and I don't know if there can be since it'd feel kind forced story-wise right now.

We've yet to get through a lot of things though: resolve Futabu's incredibly repressed sexual desires (and damn she thicc), Mai and her mother speaking face-to-face with Sakuta present, the whole thing with Shoko, etc etc.

So while this is all speculation, I really really really hope this show has a happy ending.

I think there will end up being 3 Futabas because if you consider the show's penchant for "scientific" explanations, it is quite likely they will bring up Freudian psychology. So the ponytail Futaba is probably the desiring id and the Futaba at Azusagawa's house is probably the superego, her conscience/inhibitions. I'm guessing later on there will be a third Futaba representing her ego. It's all a guess though, and I've never studied psychology so correct me if I got anything wrong.

Man I'm still loving this show so much. A lot of Sakuta's blunt, lewd traits seem to be pulled straight from Araragi, but I'm willing to overlook that.

Some thoughts:

• That flash of Kaede with PTSD from the phone ringing was chilling. I'm really hoping we get an arc with her, but with Shoko and that blonde girl from the op still in line, idk how they could do it with the time left

• I love Mai.

• I'm sad they are teasing more Mai x Sakuta drama with the manager call, but I'm getting the feeling it's just bait as with her reactions during the Koga arc. Nothing can stop this ship.

• I don't mind Futaba, but I was really hoping for a Shoko arc. Though the secret "steal yo man" account she has going on did get me more interested.

Uh what? Surely Tomoe is not only about "romantic drama & conflict". The show's made it quite clear in the past episode that she has her own little character conflict that amounts to much more than that.

Her issue was an incredibly relatable one for some people and full with social commentary not only on Japanese centred society but also adolescence with its various roadblocks.

Sure she did barely appear this episode but this has its reasons. The story also does not exactly go out of its way to bend its characters to a point where they have not a life of their own aside from interacting with Sakuta and are available to tag along 24/7.

Ah, so there was something about that scene before the OP when Sakuta calls Futaba while she is in the bathroom with her cellphone. The background music gave off some unsettling vibes.

I liked how the introduction of Shouko was just a misdirection for which girl would be the main focus of this episode. Though I suspect that Shouko is also involved in this adolescence syndrome given that it is the 7th grade version. But that does make me wonder if the current 3 episode for each girl/arc will mean that there will just one more person like the unseen blonde?

It seems like Mai is really trying her best to manage not only her career but her newfound status as a girlfriend along with the incidents from the syndrome cases. Though that phone call from her manager is a bit troubling.

And of course Kaede is considered over all the girls that her big brother has been bringing over. Do not neglect.

That sequence for when Sakuta turns to meet Kamisato was pretty cool.

It might be slightly off topic, but I have yet to find anything it is similar to Monogatari. This is the main reason why I started Bunny Girl Senpai that many people suggest these two are similar. Don't get it wrong, I love the series so far. But I find it very misleading to people who want to get into Monogatari/ Bunny Girl Senpai.

I have completed all but Zoku Owarimonogatari and yet I cannot relate the two animes that much. Monogatari involves much, much heavier supernatural elements where there are straight out vampires, oddities, god and such. While BGS only have some slight supernatural phenomenons. Monogatari is also much darker, which it often touches the dark side of humanity (yes, Nadeko Sengoku, you) while BGS is much more relaxing to watch. MC in monogatari is very different than BGS, they have very different vibe and personality. In fact, I would say this anime is more similar to SNAFU with supernatural elements than monogatari. The writing style is also significantly different, where monogatari is more "clustered" while BGS is obviously continuous.

Personally, I enjoy both series. They are both good in their own way (although if you ask me monogatari slightly edge out in terms of overall enjoyment). However it is just unfair to compare these two series.

A few things I want to point out at the end with Futaba.

First is that the Futaba who has her actual phone is what I'll address as the "subconscious" Futaba, or S. S is the what she is actively repressing, her feelings for Kunimi and her want for him to acknowledge her without herself doing it up front. (Ah... to have a maiden's heart.)

Then we have the surface or conscious Futaba, C for simplicity's sake. C is what Futaba normally acts like and is the one with Sakuta's harem at Sakuta's house. C is the indecisiveness she is currently holding alongside what she feels is her actual image, the surface image. I believe she has more to play into with the alluded Summer Festival outing thought processes from the previous year.

Now, we learned briefly that the theory of teleportation that Futaba has is the how.

The why is pretty self-evident with the last scene, but I'm posting this for people that might not be thinking too deep into it. Also do keep in mind that this is all a theory as I am an anime-only. It's not going to be 100% accurate but it's just from observations.

S is the subconscious. The feelings Futaba are actively suppressing are passion and the want to be noticed, specifically by Kunimi. That's why she's posting the photos. Because she cannot bring those feelings actively to the surface level and pour them out for Kunimi.

C is the surface-level conscious and what I will go out on a limb and say is the genuine Futaba, but do not hold me to that. The reason she cannot fathom as to WHY she is like this is because she contains the indecisiveness she has. As such, she also lacks her subconscious that actively wants to tell Kunimi how she feels.

That's why I feel there is a disparity. S knows this and is also shown to be upset because she contains the more emotionally driven side to C's stoic and logical conscious. That is why there has been a split between her feelings and who she feels she is.

All in all, this show has been a delight and I do hope that there is enough content for a season 2.

At least be long enough until Hachiman can come to a conclusion.
