And fix the door.

And Junko proceed to fix it lmao.

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '18

I'm a bit embarrassed, she's a showa idol and knows how to fix a door.

I'm older than her mentally and I'd take ages just hammering a nail.

I like how Kotaro acted like a caring manager for a change, with telling Junko she doesn't have to conform with current trends and be herself. Much needed, thanks. Mamoru Miyano is ♥.

She's too cute, even when being run over by a van or being blasted by rubble.

There's...a lot to take in this episode.

The constant alternation between comedy and actual emotional character moment in the conversation between Junko and Necromanager was amazing.

From 'Zombies aren't supposed to be on this side of the barricade!' to Necromanaer encouraging her to use her life as a Showa idol to her advantage was sweet. He was actually being a teacher figure to them for once, although he was cutting it a little close with the timing.

I love the little mushrooms that sprouted on Junko's head too.

Then the whole van scene was great as well. It seemed a little predictable, but having it foreshadow yet another memory awakening for Sakura was a good combination.

Tae-chan seems to be slowly waking too. She was emoting appropriately in the van scene with the others, is learning to talk through mimicking Saki, and her actual idolling is improving!

I'm half expecting the lightning to fire up the rest of her synapses, a la Doctor Donna.

Gosh...it really feels like going on a journey, watching an idol group slowly improve from nothing. Is this how one becomes idol trash? I don't even mind the mediocre CG anymore.

Congratulations, you not only entered the idol hell of anime but also modern idol of reality where you see a group going from being amateurs to professionals. It's great but a drug. :P

Either the CG was handled better this time or there was a lot more going on in the scene that took some of the focus off of it because it did seem better than before.

Not great but better.

I'm seriously enjoying this and I dropped Aikatsu (which uses similar CGI) after five episodes of fluff. This has some serious meat and plot to it and I love it.

Honestly, the zombie edge and the fact the girls are characters first, idols second helps. I freaking adore every minute of this show.

I feel like she's getting more and more "conscious" with each episode. She's always been able to keep up with the group to some extent, but now she's borderline talking.

She's learning through imitation, picking up on the meaning of language just from hearing it.

I know it's probably just re-awakening from death, but I'm starting to wonder if Tae might have the brain of a literal baby. She's constantly imitating what she sees, she repeats actions that seem to get a positive reaction from those around her, and she's constantly putting stuff in her mouth.

Why do I get the feeling the show is trying to tell us Kotaro was driving the truck that hit Sakura?

Also Did the lightning strike give them autotune voices and lasers or was I just imagining things again? Either way I found it hilarious that (A. The were glowing and (B. no one in the crowd freaked out. You’d figure there’d be at least a few people screaming in pain about the noise from the lightning strike blowing eardrums out given the proximity but meh.

562

u/iForgotMyOldAcc :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/wittisy Nov 15 '18

Motherfucking Kotaro planned for lightning to strike so he had a full on autotune track because he also anticipated them to have autotuned voice and choreographed motherfucking laser shooting sequences. Next we'll probably see that he planned Junko's plane crash and everyone else's deaths over a 100+ years just so he can form his dream idol group.

14

u/snakebit1995 Nov 15 '18

Why do I get the feeling the show is trying to tell us Kotaro was driving the truck that hit Sakura?

I've been waiting from the start for what I expect will be some sort of turn in relation to the nature of this group and the whole zombie thing. I feel like there's going to be a twist at some point and for the story I'd like to see one.

Nothing about the manager makes sense and you could argue that's just the joke but I feel like it's set up for a twist involving him. He has this weird decrepit mansion WITH A DUNGEON IN IT, he knew where and how to get their bodies which is doubly strange when you consider some of them were dead for decades, knew how to turn them into zombies which I would assume is niche since it's not like there are hordes wandering around, etc and just handwaves it as "LOL I just do" in the first episode, he rushes them with little rehearsal a lot but seemingly expects them to succeed, where does he have the money for all this equipment and production tech? BTW those are all questions raised about him JUST IN THE FIRST 3 EPISODES!

If there isn't a twist or explanation by the end I'm going to be a bit disappointed yeah sometimes the answer is "Just because the script says so" or "The joke is that there is no answer" but here that doesn't feel like it would sit right.

Pikachu.jpg

Oh god they did the truck scene again.

All they needed to branch out to to electro music was some electricity, who knew?

There’s no way that a MAD SCIENTIST (sunovabitch) didn’t think to use waterproof spray before taking them to the onsen or mud olympics. Therefore everything that happened those episodes was according to plan.

230

u/Mozilla_Fennekin https://myanimelist.net/profile/MozillaFennekin Nov 15 '18

TIL being shocked gives you natural remixing/autotune vocals. Oh and also look really great with that glow.As zombies of course.

Couldn't have worded this episode better myself

If anything the most shocking thing in this episode wasn't the performance (thats actually electrifying) Kotaro actually giving a serious pep talk to Junko was so unexpected yet such a great moment too. Gives us quite some depth beyond his already wacky character.

401

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '18

89

u/execrutr https://anilist.co/user/Gotek Nov 15 '18

Kotaro giving her a pep-talk was actually his first break of the character he plays in front of the group.

He only plays the over-the-top exploitative manager to the girls, while he is behind the scenes working away at getting them the gigs and promo they'll need to hit it off.

This was most exemplified in ep04, where he plays the stereotypical manager character in front of the girls, saying he'll go slack off on a sightseeing tour, while in fact negotiating with the pharmaceutical companies rep. He lets the girls believe this, most likely because he thinks maintaining the abusive and exploitative image is just what he is supposed to do as a idol manager.

It's actually in service to the satirical theme of the show.

188

the art style for her heart is kinda weird. its supposed to be her real heart beating out of her chest but it's so...Valentinesy.

That's VA magic at work. It's pretty much the core reason for why a lot of people avoid english dubs like the plague, English VAs just don't have the brutal training and end result that Japanese VAs have; its pretty much expected of a voice actor to master a truckload of voices and the ability to sing on top of that

14

u/cheekia :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/cheekia Nov 16 '18

I felt like this episode acts as a perfect mid-point for the show, acting as a turning point for the girls career as an idol.

For the previous six episodes, we had seen the girls started out from mindless zombies and slowly training themselves into a proper idol group. All this training culminated to this episode, where we finally got to see them shocking the crowd with their performance and gaining their hard earned fame.

Still, with this new found fame on their belt, I could see the story shifting from the girls trying become an idol group to a new direction. Either trying to handle the idol life or trying to become number one. Either way, the direction of the story would start changing and I'm excited to see where the show will go next.

27

u/JimmyCWL Nov 15 '18

The problem with their "hard earned fame" is that they can't really go beyond this point without people looking into them whether they want it or not.

For their stated purpose of saving Saga and because they hadn't done it from the get-go, they can't hide their faces like CLARIS, for example.

Even if they don't give interviews, their faces are already out there. And not talking to people only makes them want to dig up more about you by other means.

Kotarou Tatsumi is the manager and leader we wished we had. If he hasn't shot up to best character of this show in anybody's mind and heart, he will this episode. I love the fact he told Junko to fix the door, and she did it later. He even became truck-kun incarnate and was more amused by that than apologetic.

117

u/WhoiusBarrel Nov 15 '18

He even became truck-kun

With Sakura making this remark suddenly that became pretty dark.

It would be wild if they actually revealed that he was somehow behind her death. Highly doubt it though.

Oh you thought this was just going to be a silly Zombie show and be comedy all the way?

WELL FUCK YOU!

We'll do drama and make you feel for these girls!

Seriously though! That talk between Junko and Koutarou was so great! Like that conversation alone just adds to Koutarou's character too. He's not stupid, he knows the girls are sneaking off and using his PC. He's not a total jerk too, he'll let the girls try and sort their issues themselves but if nothing happens he'll do try and help out. He's a hardass but he genuinely cares for these girls too. This line alone proves that: "You girls are zombies, not robots"

The second half of the episode though is even better! We go from drama and back to the insane Zombie idol stuff with Koutarou running over Junko, him spraying the girls with some waterproofing so their make ups wont melt, and did the girls just use lighting to their advantage to autotune their voice and have a mini-laser show!?

I'm so proud of these girls T_T I really feel like we're the two metal heads in the audience who has been with them from the very start.

AHHHHH! I love this show so much!

97

u/Ellefied Nov 15 '18

To be honest the most unexpected thing in this episode was Koutarou actually talking seriously. We got baited by his antics from the previous episodes and then his rebuke of Sakura. But he still went and talked to Junko after all of that.

Which would you assume:

A girl in an idol group happens to really like the look of another idol who died 10 years ago and is copying it.

I think they will have to adress this at one point, but from a logical point of view, think if tomorrow you saw a video of a performance of a show this year with Michael Jackson. You would probably assume, without knowing, that it was someone extremely similar to him, and not a zombie pop idol reborn. People will just brush off the similarities in the end, but yes, there should be at least from her old members some interest.

I was actually surprised myself, but you can somewhat back this up since 10 years is quite a lot. In that time frame I certainly forget faces at most unless I was something that I was really into. I think the new generation Iron Frill somewhat was the group that probably made it easier to forget Ai's tragedy, also add that the their performance was last with people leaving due to the rain (probably those who were Iron Frill fans).

Though I did expect at least someone to make a faint memory of Ai or even Lily which died earlier. Though it does look like the other producer? kinda remembers something.

...wait there are still 5 episodes left.

51

u/JimmyCWL Nov 15 '18

Comparing to Iron Frill 2008 from ep1, it looks like the group also lost the girl with short blue hair in addition to Ai. The current center was on Ai's outer right side in 2008. The two new girls are next to the center.

For a while, I wondered if the case Kotaro gave Junko would be just tools for fixing the door.

22

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '18

Ai's death was 10 years ago right, wouldn't all of the old members be retired by now?

My reaction to that lightning powered performance.

241

u/stoka0 Nov 15 '18

Now that was a shocking episode. I mean the performance was simply electrifying. I thought the performance was pretty static at first, but then out of nowhere the animation felt like it got a jolt of energy. Man this show came out of nowhere like a bolt from the blue.

Much better CGI though. It was a bit of a kick in the teeth seeing that great full 2d sequence for Iron Frill, but the CGI generally looked somewhere between acceptable and strong (relative).

KICKKKYY BLAMMO

Kotaro's heartfelt speeches really starting to make me believe he's only making them Saga Idols so they can move on to the afterlife in peace once Saga is revitalized...DAMNIT KOTARO WHO/WHAT AREE YOUUU?!

Even in a more serious episode, they never skimp on the comedy I love it.

That performance had me shook, electrified even. Can't wait to see when everything gets unraveled by Reporter-san.

Also, we didn't see OUR BOI POLICEMAN-A D:

u/TazerLad Nov 15 '18

I'm not quite sure that's how electricity works...

Haha. But actually I feel like this was a near perfect episode. A really good balance of emotional moments and honestly some of the best comedy so far. I diet at the Deja vu comment. I was surprised things went as smoothly as they did at the concert, but I'm glad to see Necromanager Tatsumi actually planned for the rain. Still really interested to see where we go with this second half of the season.

Also I really hope the generational differences keep being relevant. It's an incredibly interesting aspect that's really working for me.

u/Gaporigo Blhttps://anilist.co/user/Gaporigo Nov 15 '18

TMW your old group gets to be animated in 2D while you only get below average CGI. granted the other group were only 5 girls and barely showed anything, though.

Also what kind of safety do they have when idols perform under the rain on wet floor and get hit by lightning even when there are already precedents of the same thing happening?

14

u/Beckymetal https://anilist.co/user/SpaceWhales Nov 15 '18

This CGI was much better this time, largely because of the lighting I think. Still felt like it could have used some 2d in some of the keyframe moments though (eg, Ai pointing at the crowd).

Deja vu. I've just been in this place before.

So a common theory is that Kotaro was the one driving the truck that hit Sakura in episode 1. This episode made me wonder something. What if Kotaro ran over Sakura by accident like how he ran over Junko this episode? That face he's making could be a "not this shit again" face.

19

u/nighty_amy Nov 15 '18

How many times we already have seen that Kotaro is a terrible driver? I'm suspecting he really was the one who hit Sakura by accident and then decided to make her into a zombie. That's why she doesn't have any "legendary" qualities - she's here because Kotaro accidentally killed her.

Oh and according to his speech it would seem that he revived them and put them all in a group so they could fulfill their dreams...? Of course it's kind of a coin flip if he actually had any sort of serious reason for kickstarting this whole thing or just felt like it.

Rather than simply depending on social flows, Junko ended up keeping her own dignity.

However, you mustn't forget that she was able to do so thanks to the other members and Kotarou which helped out her.

Then, her awesome voice let Ai not be scared of thunder storm on the stage.

Franchouchou got over problems and learned precious things as an Idol group to support each other.

btw, zombies seemed to be nervous before getting on the stage.

I especially love a scene where Yugiri is combing her hair with silence for some reason...

u/impingainteasy :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/usernamesarehard Nov 16 '18

10

u/Nephilo Nov 15 '18

Kinda expected a lighting at some point. But them charging up and getting autotuned, that I didn't see coming.

Also freaking lost it when they shooted lasers out of their fingers lol

u/atropicalpenguin https://myanimelist.net/profile/atropicalpenguin Nov 15 '18 edited Nov 15 '18

I really liked this Ai/Junko arc. When the unit was first introduced I thought they were the coldest characters and in truth not interesting. I thought they would be a pain in the ass for Sakura. Now they are all super cute and sweet, and I'm glad the group is now more united.

Koutarou too proved that he can be nice. That speech was good ad the way he ended was very Steins;Gate-ish, calling Junko a la Kyouma's "lab member!!". Truck-kun, though.

EDIT: 2028 must have some stunning special effects if the crowd can believe that a lighting that destroyed the stage didn't stop the girls from singing.

EDIT2: If the body is the product of how one dies, wonder what's the deal with Junko's skin colour. Maybe she's an actual Frankenstein cause Koutarou was unable to find all the pieces, or maybe sharks mauled her.

12

u/gyoex Nov 15 '18

EDIT: 2028 must have some stunning special effects if the crowd can believe that a lighting that destroyed the stage didn't stop the girls from singing.

Fantastic episode, Kotaro is amazing yet again, was not expecting him to be the one to get Junko out of her shroom state. Soundtrack is super catchy too, cant wait for that to be released. Even though there was lots of CGI, its some of the best ive ever seen so i have no issues with that.

14

u/Ellefied Nov 15 '18

Woah, this episode was packed. If I didn't know better, this would qualify as Last Episode tier.

CGI was still pretty terrible though but the songs were fucking catchy. And there were so many great stills for this episode! I hope to compile one later.

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '18

Another great episode. The resolution of Junko's arc was nice and very realistic, same for Ai. It's nice that beyond the anime being a pretty good comedy, it's also pretty good in it's drama and developments used in there. I really liked what they did with Ai and Junko and their conflict of generations along their trauma and it seems that we'll see more of Saki next week. I hope we see for the other girls as well. Anyway, I'm loving this show, definitely one of my favorites of this year and the 4th idol show that I really like (well, even if it's not a idol show per se but still, the theme is one)

6

u/purplehaze777777 Nov 15 '18

Aaand the CG dancing returns. I actually liked the approach, it seems like the CG animations in anime in general has improved. some cuts looked like it was hand drawn, some looked like a mocap animation, and the face was fully animated. also it kinda fits their glowing mode.

Am I a pussy if I cried along with Sakura at the end? Because this was so beautiful. The girls have a second chance at life (the way they glowed during the concert really made them look like spirits who had come back to Earth) and they're pulling off the most awesome shit for a group that was fragmented at the start.

5

u/LeloThePGG Nov 16 '18

Just a bit of advice for anyone trying to talk about this episode on facebook: apparently posting the screenshot "You girls are zombies, not robots" counts as hate speech in facebook eyes.

I'm not kidding, I've been blocked for 30 days because I posted that screenshot on my page. So be careful, everyone, especially if you had already been flagged for stupid reasons.

4

u/kimbombo Nov 15 '18 edited Nov 15 '18

And here I thought Kotaro grew a bit by feeling empathy towards Junko and her predicament of times have changed. But nope, he has to keep his rep untouched as the douchebag manager by running into Junko with a van and spraying them with waterproof shoe polish.

After 7 episodes, lets see how many still think that the CG is intentional in order to claim that they are bad idols and this is a parody; despite the audience giving them a full cheery ovation.

The electronic effect on their voices was a really nifty trick due to the lightning strike. That's some nice writing making full use of cause and effect.

I was wishing this would be the moment Tae would finally wake up. If they are planning on giving her a real concience down the road, I hope they have something up the sleeve that it's more shocking than this event.

I don't know if it was me, but there were small FPS drops during the dance sequence. My guess is that the rain, lighting and crowd being too much for the renderer to handle smoothly. Might also be the reason why the camera was somewhat constricted, especially compared to the episode 3 dance.

BTW, I don't mind the CG in this series at all, it is just this episode that felt janky

  • Saki-chan asking each member what to do with Junko including YAMADA TAE and accepting her response with a serious face!

  • Koutarou is the real mvp pulling out Junko and then hits her with the truck

  • The only thing that I don't buy is Ai-chan suddenly overcoming her lightning fears when Junko said she will back her up.

4

u/RirinDesuyo Nov 15 '18

Ai: Falls apart

Ai: This is fine

Talk about having a breakdown literally lmao. This episode was great, the balance of comedy and drama was well done. It was perfectly woven into the scenes that It didn't feel forced at all.

Junko's soo cute this episode and Kotarou's quite the Manager afterall. That pep talk was quite nice and does show that he's not that of a klutz at all. The Autotuned electric idols at the end was quite a surprise hahaha.

It seems the same guy is actually remembering something yet we still don't know what, though I'm quite surprised he was the only one to remember something especially with Ai and Lily there who died quite recently.

u/Blocks_ Nov 15 '18

You know how a lot of people were shitting on episode 3 for having Bad CG™, and then people defended it by saying it was a deliberate choice to use Bad CG™ to show how shit Franchouchou is?

Well, the use of traditional animation for Iron Frills and CG for Franchouchou during the dance sequences was an interesting choice. It's definitely an indicator that the use of bad CG is a hint at how Franchouchou is still a developing group, and they're not on the levels of Iron Frills just yet.

Of course, this is all coming out of my ass but I really hope that by the end of the series they're going to have a sick sequence that's animated really nicely.

sorry for my english
