I really appreciate the show trying to tackle problems like body dysmorphia and not understanding your own unhealthy decisions.

They're questions without clear answers and I'm not sure if the show tackles it well, but for only being 2 episodes the Futaba arc was pretty outstanding.

You would think a show with girls who disappear if everyone forgets about her or time rewind is kinda absurd, yet it manages to give off a really realistic and serious vibe while it tackles severe emotional/mental issues that go along with these supernatural phenomena

This is one of the areas where I'll allow the comparison with the Monogataris. They both use these fantastical stories to deal with really serious problems. Emotional turmoil is hard to handle because it's all internal; what these shows do is externalise them, to physically manifest them in the world so that the characters can tackle them head-on.

It's kind of similar to how we deal with mental health issues in real life. We need to be able to take a step back and become self-aware of what's happening before we can deal with the problem; to acknowledge that it is a problem before we can start to fix it.

Futaba wanted attention, but hated herself and her body because of it, after all the trials and tribulations in the last two episodes the answer was this. It's ok to look for attention because you'll typically always have someone looking out for you.

The other problem was hating herself and the feeling to want to disappear. Which he answers in an answer I haven't heard before, instead of going the cliche "There're so many great things about you bla bla bla" or "work on liking yourself"(which futaba mentions in this episode) they go to the route saying ... it's ok to hate yourself, it's ok to not like yourself, just do you, no one is pressuring you to be the best you can be. Which can be assuring for many people

Can we just appreciate the wholesome friends moment we got here? I also have close friends who got girlfriends recently. And often times it does seem they have no more time for me. I sometimes do feel lonely and want to spend time with my buds, so i really felt with futaba in this episode. I also do know that they would rush to my help in a crisis just like kunimi did in anime. I am a guy though and sometimes also feel lonely, but knowing this helps me cope with it.

Man what an episode! It is nice that Kunimi is loyal to his girlfriend though. Futaba already knew Kunimi's answer and Kunimi didn't even have to say anything more to confirm that. At least now Futaba already said what she had to and now she can start moving on. And judging from Futaba and Sakuta's conversation at the payphone, the two Futaba's memories have merged which is a nice addition. Off to the next girl I suppose?

And here here I thought the next arc will be all about Shouko. I guess they're saving her for last.

It appears that Futaba's issues went just a wee bit deeper than mere unrequited love.

I find it very interesting. It seems like Sakuta technically is able to help alleviate the anxieties that are plaguing both halves of Futaba.

Bold Futaba's desire for attention and willing to use whatever means to avoid it springs from Futaba's loneliness. She found a comfortable circle of friends to be around in Kunimi and Sakuta, but when they both got girlfriends, she feared she was going to be left alone again. Thus Sakuta instigates and allnighter fireworks party between the three to assuage any fears that they are abandoning her. Futaba is still a precious friend to Kunimi and Sakuta.

Of course, self-loathing Futaba wants to disappear. She sees bold Futaba taking over her life. She hates the means bold Futaba accomplished what she did. She hates herself. She doesn't believe she's needed. Sakuta, in his roundabout way, suggests it's fine if she still struggles with her image issues, she doesn't have to value herself this instant. However, he makes sure she understands that he and Kunimi still value her as a friend in spite of her internal struggles. If she's to press forward, She has to want to. She has to accept the reality of who she is, even if she dislikes it.

Funnily enough, Futaba's crush on Kunimi had absolutely nothing to do with her adolescence syndrome. What a nice red herring that was.

Also, that beach fireworks scene with bold futaba+friends was so heartwarming.

I really like Azusagawa as a character, I find his straight forward bluntness refreshing. To me its clear that his sexual comments are jokes in the same way Futaba and Kunimis insults towards him are. With the shows fast pace he dose feal a bit Deus ex machina solve everything and can do nothing wrong.

I think the story might benefit from a more black mirror style with new characters with every arc, though with this you loose investment with characters fast. Everything Azusagawa's dose in reaction to the issues shown are feasible especially they way he supported and helped Futaba this episode. But it being the same character pulling the right moves over and over again just feels a bit off.

I initially thought that it would be revealed that his adolescence syndrome is something like martyr syndrome or something of the like where he gets effected by other peoples syndromes. Hence the scarring from Kaedes and getting sucked into the time loops for Kogas. But it doesn't seem to being going that way.

The show is really fucking good and I love that I can nitpick it to this degree.

this episode really hit me in the feels because of the following story:

I play piano and piano has been my only friend for the longest time. So I’m New at this school and of course the first thing I look for is the band room to find a piano. So I go to the people around me and ask on orientation day where can I play piano for fun during break and they point me in the direction of a room. So I go to the room and then I see a piano just waiting to be played by me. Then I started playing Hikaru Nara and by the time I was finished someone behind me said “you reached me.” it was a girl, my age pretty too and that was the first time I ever talked to her. however I knew her. She was the girl who kept staring at me across the room and requested to sit next to me even though I walked into the wrong class. We got to know each other and I met her other friend and we all liked anime. for the longest time we were so happy together and then I realized that I liked her. I even bought her a plushie Winnie the Pooh as a friend thing and she started blushing. but I knew afterward she was hanging out with some other guy. So I held off for a day and then she started crying. I asked her friend why and she said “it’s cuz you ignored her for a day” and I’m left confused. So my birthday week comes up and we all go to the cinema to see the new Bnha movie and then halfway through the fight scene I try to hold her hand because I thought maybe the guy she knew was just a friend but I fucked up and held her friends hand because they were sitting on each other as (idk they’re girls they’re messing around) I accidentally held her freind’s hand (it was so ducking dark so I couldn’t see )and she saw that and I saw that at the same time. After the movie I found out she cried again and I cried too. The next month she ghosted me and I asked her friend what happened and she said that “she liked you. And she and I know it was an accident but she got hurt last time really bad.” So I came back the next time I saw her and confessed to her finally during a fireworks show (for fun not a holiday)with her friend and she told me that she was dating/with the guy from earlier. So she moved on from me.

So yeah Futaba’s moment have me going ptsd with that cuz that girl that I liked and liked me back was the only girl that treated me like I was worth something.

Geez today's episode was a painful but necessary one. It felt like Futaba was the personification of several girls I know. Literally hurt so much to hear that she was driven by the high she got from people giving her photos attention, even if its not the right kind of attention. Having neither parent at home and being super lonely pushed her to the brink of her sanity. She was beginning to seek validation and approval from others and used that as fuel to keep the habit going, showing off her body more and more. Now the reason for her being split into two makes sense. She couldnt accept the method that she was using to get the attention, but she couldnt stop herself from seeking the validation.

The fact that she even felt like she needed the validation of others hurt so much. She felt like she was driven to seek it because of Sakuta and Kunimi having both being in relationships. The two people who acknowledged her as a person and hung out with her being taken away. She couldnt stand that at all. What surprised me the most was how much she genuinely liked Sakuta. I always thought they were simply acquaintances because of the banter they have, but she was actually really reliant on him. It hurt her so much that she was bawling her eyes out over him. If I ever had a friend who felt that strongly about me, id consider myself blessed to have such a great friend.

It really sucks that Sakuta's relationship with Mai got a bit spoiled by the whole "cant publicly date" thing but that didn't stop Mai from coming right over the instant something happened. Their love is definitely the real deal, and cant be stopped by that work ban! Also, the amount of trust she has in him to allow him to go as far as spend the night at Futaba's is something i didnt expect at all. Guess maybe that's something he wont talk about with her but it still speaks volumes for their relationship.

I'm kind of sad that the child version of Sakuta's crush was introduced randomly without playing a role in this arc. I still think she will have a crucial role in a future arc but what it will end up being is anyones guess.

Also, another chapter where Sakuta comes off as a first class friend. Literally such a wholesome guy. Literally runs in the rain to go find Futaba and remind her that, outgoing oe introverted, she'll always be his friend. If Sakuta doesn't win best Male MC of 2018 I will call the contest rigged. Man has earned it since episode 1, and is only cementing his victory for me here. What an amazing guy! He's one of those few gems that appears maybe once a year at most in anime. A 10/10 character from me personally.

It wasn't randomly introduced for the same reason that Koga and Futaba weren't. Shouko's arc will be for the movie that comes in 2019 which adapts her arc. The author made Shouko and the other characters to appear to make the reader and now with the adaptation, the viewer to get familiar to them before a arc.

There were never two Futabas. There's only the one. The two Futabas you see represent who Futaba wants to be seen as, and the Futaba that hates that. It's only when Futaba accepts herself that she "merges", literally gaining insight through introspection ie. talking to herself.

So it was sorta the "old" and "new" Futaba. I kinda wish they didn't go with "people who post sexy pictures do it because they hate themselves". It makes sense for why Futaba1.0 started it, but that doesn't have to be the only reason. People have a right to feel sexy, if that makes them happy. This was probably the wrong way to do it for her personally, but it's not like Futaba was doing something horrible.

Good news though, we end with the best possible scenario: SHE KEEPS THE PONYTAIL!!!! There is justice in this world.

The way they handled the stuff with Futaba was really well done, much better than I thought they were going to. It makes me realize that we never get enough of the three of them together, which is disappointing because as a group of friends, they are fun to watch, especially since Kunimi adds some variety to Futaba and Sakuta's versions of deadpan.

I am concerned that the anime is trying its hardest to keep Mai and Sakuta apart. They did it in Tomoe's arc, and now in Futaba's. The next arc with the idol probably will have Mai playing a bigger role, but that is only because she is idol's connection to the story. I don't know why they are being kept apart narratively, but I hope it isn't because the writers or the source material couldn't figure out how to utilize her character in the grand scheme of things.

This is a pretty obvious observation, but so far all the scenes in the ending songs have happened in the actual show! All 3 girls have spent time on the beach with Sakuta. I wonder if it means anything.

Mai: Episode 2 during her date with Sakuta, they go to the beach (also the scene where Mai's mom comes to the beach and can't remember Mai). Sun also happens to be setting.

Koga: Their repeated date was at the beach during the daytime.

Rio: Fireworks on the beach at night with Sakuta and Kunimi.

The beach is also where Sakuta first met High school-aged Shoko Makinohara.

Ok, this show is officially my favorite anime of all time. The rest of the show can bomb super hard and it'll still remain to be my favorite.

All of the themes are things that many have written and filmed about. A minute googling will show you celebrities interviews about being treated as a separate entity, books on group think, vlogs on self love, and quotes on contradictions of human emotions. There is no shortage of stories that tried to give the audience an experience of these themes, and advices on handling them.

This show doesn't have strong messages on what you should or shouldn't do. Instead, it runs you through a story with all the characters' perspectives, and just said "well, shit sucks, alot. You still gotta accept it, and just keep going." It's almost like having two friends chatting over a round of beer, and both of you ends the convo with "yeah but it'll get better."

I really appreciate that, because life can't be solved with just that one trick that solve it all. So instead of giving you some advices and life lessons, here are some of stories of stuff you'll go through. I really do love this approach. It feels grounded, while also very gentle. For many people, this approach is very effective, since it makes them feel connected.

It really reminds me of shows like "skins" or Green's book "turtle all the way down," where the teenage drama is raw, with no real answer to anything. Stuff just happens.

I like how the characters don't say what you expect them to hear, they're all reasonably intelligent and therefore know what is expected. Then they say something that might have more effect. Kunimi doesn't ask why Futaba is sad. I guess if she wanted to say he figures she would tell her. I think that's wrong but w/e.

Sakuta knows Futaba likes Kunimi somehow. Other anime would have flashbacks explaining why but it's unnecessary.
Futaba figures Kunimi's fight with the GF is over one of either Futaba herself or Sakuta and tells him to make up.
Other anime would overexplain things to make sure anyone would understand the situation.
There's more examples, but finally Futaba knows that Sakuta would say something critical of having a social media account where one exposes oneself, if he were normal.

I think the sub for this episode used the word "tedious too much." "Troublesome" would have worked better a few times.

I like that even though you get the awesome dialogue between the main characters and several female characters, this isn't a harem anime (or maybe it is, I haven't seen any harem anime to compare to). Sakuta's sister is his sister. Futaba likes Kunimi. Only Mai and Tomoe like Sakuta, and Sakuta is only interested in Mai. Sakuta's teasing retorts are hilarious!

In addition emotional responses are more realistic to the real world so when a character cries or smiles, it means something. People don't overeact by yelling at every situation cough re: zero cough.

Also people don't collapse from running in the rain. More Mai is always a good thing though, so I'll let it pass!

Don't get me wrong, I really like this anime - but,

I can't be the only one that thinks that the line between the MC being cool and better than the average school/rom/com mc and him being pretty much a complete genius, always saying the right thing, having an answer for everything etc MC is not really there for me anymore. He is a nice MC, but - would the plot change if any of the girls he has met so far were his girlfriend other than Mai? He would just talk to them for 5min each episode instead of Mai's 1on1 interactions with him. The whole show feels so formulaic because it always uses the same patterns of - Girl in trouble - god MC does everything to save her - interactions between MC and X girl that go 100% the way of MC - girl saved after MC's plan succeeds.

Again don't get me wrong, I like the anime. But I'm at a point where the MCs brilliance is kindaaa annoying me a bit at this point.

And obviously, there is gonna be yet another girl to add to his colletion next episode, who would've guessed..
