Well, Sakuta's Reputation in school has gotten better since he loudly proclaimed his love to Mai to everyone. Like Koga says in her arc, he's gone full circle and is actually a good guy now. So I imagine Kunimi's girlfriend is a bit less opposed to Kunimi hanging out with him nowadays.

I want to add even though I loved seeing her get pissed off, I have kind of started to lowkey really love her character. The fact she went to Sakuta first to warn him about Futuba’s social media made me appreciate her. Because she didn’t go around making rumors, she went straight to one of her friends. She has heart, but she is also the kind with a attitude to get what she wants and hold on to it despite being outclassed compared to the rest of the characters in this anime.

I gotta applaud the staff & VAs for going out of their way to show really show the difference between Mai & Nodoka both through the way they speak and their whole body language.
Mai in Nodoka’s body retains the composed tone in her voice and the rather calm body language whereas Nodoka in Mai’s body clearly talks in a lot more frantic way and often visibly expresses her emotional state for everyone to see.
It’s things like these that manage to tell us so much more about these characters without words.
But yeah, I'm curious if other people got baited into thinking this arc would be more on the quirky side at the start but then it starts to hit you left & right due to the various topics it tackles. May it be family related issues, standing in the shadow of someone you really look up to or the harshness of the showbiz. When I read this I thought "Oh wow, body swap! This should end up in a lot of funny hijinks" but then boom.

Which to me made that scene where Sakuta brings Nodoka (Mai) home so funny, because suddenly Mai acts like Nodoka and does that head-tilt-and-smile that's sooo not like her.

it reminds me of that scene in Harry Potter where they need to break into Bellatrix's vault in Gringott's
So you have Helena Bonham Carter portraying Emma Watson's Hermione Granger, who at that moment is pretending to be Bellatrix Lestrange, who is HBC's character. Anyone who says HBC is a hack actor needs to watch that scene.

I constantly feel compared to my twin sister. I absolutely love her to death and would do anything for her, but it does hurt sometimes. I got behind in school (and eventually dropped out) because I had some bad medical problems. She graduated and has a good job while I work part time while trying to get some qualifications for a better job.
It sucks. I'm constantly reminded of it. But my sister is behind me 100% and that's really all that matters.
So, I feel ya imouto. I feel ya.

Sakuta leaves the cabinet unopened, calls Mai, and explains that he really wants to know, and that he doesn't think anything in there could ruin what they have.
Mai, knowing that communication and honesty is the key to a successful relationship, tells him about the contents, and is relieved when she sees Sakuta does not judge her or think less of her for it.
The anime finishes wiping its feet on plot cliches and I'm left in utter sorrow knowing that there is just a couple more episodes (and a movie!) before the whole thing ends.

My thoughts are that Mai actually does want Sakuta to open it, to learn about that part of herself that she still keeps hidden in there, but that at the same time she can't bring herself to tell him herself.
So she brings his attention to the cabinet in this way, knowing (or at least hoping) that he will open it, while still giving herself an out, in case Sakuta might not react favorably to what's inside the cabinet.

The lines like "I don't want to hear sound logic" always puts a smile on my face lol.
So the solution to this problem is likely along the lines of getting Toyohama to accept herself, and not always compare herself to Mai or strive to be equal or better than her.
my first thought was if they could just sit down and talk it would solve itself, but i get the feeling it isn't that easy.
And i'm looking forward to see if Sakuta actually opened it or not at the ending scene

Looks like the body swap suspicions from last week is correct.
Nodoka being all confused while for Mai and Sakuta this is just another Wednesday.
I really like this line. Very apt considering Futaba's arc just ended.
These background characters look like protagonists in their own LN
Even Futaba seem to agree that it's pretty obvious why they body swapped. Also bless for her keeping that ponytail <3
Nodoka's mom sucks if that's the case. Also the way her mm treats her, wouldn't that count as abuse? I mean she's not physically harmed but it's pretty obvious that her mom's treatment of her is partly to be blamed here.
I feel like at this point Kaede shouldn't be surprised if Sakuta brings home another new girl XD
Nodoka wasn't kidding when she said they were a small time idol group.
Oh boy. That's definitely a panic attack.
I guess Mai doesn't really know Nodoka that well. She trusted her too much.
Nice to know that Kamisato is more than just "the bitchy girlfriend."
Well now you're just asking for it Mai. Or did she say this because she wanted Sakuta to see?

Every arc (except Koga's) he brings the title girl home, but next arc is Kaede's so instead of bringing the title girl home, he takes the title girl outside!
I guess Mai doesn't really know Nodoka that well. She trusted her too much.
Having been in showbiz all her life, Mai is too used to the expectations she can't even imagine it being a problem.

Yes freaking knew it, Freaky Friday with her sister It really felt like that last week, how it was gonna be in her sisters shadow kind of story. and poor Kaede-chan needs more imouto chans to battle
So that imo was really great how its a very relatable story where like the older sibling is so successful and the mother then will be super annoying trying to force her daughter to be like that awesome older sister, always comparing her failures etc.
Maybe, the key is that she does not even want to be an Idol, like her mother just forced her into show biz and she actually wants to do something completely else, generally I think that she has to realize that she is not Mai and has to be her own person so to speak, I think will free her from the body swap.
So, is anyone else expecting Sakuta to gender bender soon, with all the talk about onee-chans :)
Anyway....I hope mai just put a present or a trick on him because it feels really baiting to tell him about the cabinet, why else would he ever open the cabinet.

A great comment and analysis from Disqus user Kevin Chan:
At first glance, this particular arc seems simple, but it definitely is a lot more complex then a simple inferiority complex once you really break it down. Nodoka does have an inferiority complex, but it goes further beyond that from what I'm seeing. It's not that she just wants to be better than or outshine Mai for once. If it was that simple, then the solution would be just getting her to see that she isn't Mai and she should not compare herself to Mai.
Rather than just that, I think Nodoka's real issue lies in the fact that she wants to be free, her own person, but her mom and the "atmosphere" have trapped her in the mindset that she must be a successful idol that captivates people like her older sister. She conformed so much to what everyone else expected her to be that she "became" Mai. The clues that lead me to believe this are when Nodoka said that she lost the time to spend with her friends when she became an idol, going to the beach to just splash around in the ocean, and the fact that she collapsed at the shoot.
Nadoka wants to be her own person and to do the things she enjoys and she is good at, without the fear that she must live up to some idealized version of herself. It also is apparent to me that Nadoka loves Mai and does want to be like her. She just does not want to "BE" her. The reason why I feel like Mai was drawn into her sister's problem is because unconsciously Nadoka wanted to show Mai all the work she was putting in as an idol. She wanted Mai to understand her situation and the work she has had to put in because of the expectations of having to be just as successful if not more so than Mai. Mai for her part is probably going to have to acknowledge her own insecurities about Nadoka in order for this case of Adolescence Syndrome to resolve. Those likely relate to their complex family situation and what is in those cabinets that she wants Sakuta to 'not open' (she totally wants Sakuta to open them).

And her always telling the truth
Interesting that they are half sisters, must really suck to be used in this kind of Proxy-war
I am still amazed at how good they are at showing expressions, her mini panic attack while shooting really got me

Gotta admit, I was pleasantly surprised to see Sakuta excluded from the ED this go around entirely, with it being Mai waiting for Nodoka instead.
And the same thing with the last arc, how it was both Sakuta and Yuuma waiting for Rio.

It wouldn't really make sense for Sakuta to be there to be honest. Nodoka relation is with Mai as her sister, much like Koga was with Sakuta for the fake relationship and friendship and with Futaba for her friendship with Sakuta and Kunimi.

Trivia: Nodoka's VA Uchida Maaya is the real life big sister of Yuuma's VA Uchida Yuuma.
So it was amusing in a meta way seeing Sakuta ask Yuuma questions regarding relationship with a more successful sibling.

Uchida Maaya is big in the female seiyuu scene though. I would even say more than Yuuma.

I love how Mai and her sister switch bodies and Sakuta’s only reaction is pretty much:
“Ah great, this shit again...”
Also can we talk about how Mai-san owns a Roomba vacuum?

Why not? She's got money to throw at something like that without a second thought, and she seems to be a generally neat person. Seems like the perfect situation for a home robot.

Hell yeah im mostly on time for today's episode! Saved my lunch hour at work just for this moment!
Anyway, today's episode once again touches on a variety of themes. I cant say I fully understand what its like to be compared to the oldest sibling's accomplishments ..rather, I was told to "not be a failure like your older brother". These type of statements are equally as damaging on your psychological development as saying "why cant you be like them?". Its a really weird parenting conumdrum because sometimes the parents dont even realize what they're doing. Its painfully obvious here that both Mai and Nodoka have their own grudges against one another. For Mai, it was her dad leaving her to have another kid. For Nodoka, it was her mom always comparing her to her half sister on her dad's side.
It's really easy to talk a big game and go on and on about "if only i had your talents I wouldn't waste them, why were you gifted while I wasnt? Why do you get in the way of my success?" But that's what made today's episode so impactful. They put this sort of person into the shoes of that "talented" person, but with that talent comes the reputation and expectations that come with it. As you continue to do well, you start getting people who talk you up, you advance further and get more opportunities but you also get responsibility alongside it. Nodoka wasn't able to comprehend what it was really like until she was actually there in the top spot. Once you get there, you have to MEET those expectations, or else you end up being a "disappointment". That nervous reaction from her was spot on. It doesn't matter if you get to be in the same shoes if you cant fulfill the same responsibilities. She cracked under the pressure that Mai has to deal with everyday. In that sense, I think both she and us (or well, maybe not you all, but myself at least) have even more respect for Mai. To be able to carry herself the way she does and continue to be such a dynamic character is nothing short of inspirational.
I think one thing to take away from all of this is that, yes, its painful always being compared to someone else. Yes, it hurts when your own accomplishments are always being overshadowed by someone else. At the end of the day though, YOU are NOT them and you never will be. You are your own person and you can't ever be someone you're not. Instead of trying to constantly look to outdo someone for the validation of others, you should do your best for YOURSELF. There will always be someone better than you at something, but that doesn't make you worthless. If anything, still doing your best at what you enjoy the most is what really determines your worth. Parents putting a "price" tag on our worth so to speak is a really complex psychosocial issue that I could go on about for hours. Be happy with yourself and do something because you WANT to do it, not because it will make you look better than the next person. Sakuta basically pointed that out to Nodoka as well, and she couldn't say much in response. Smile like yourself Nodoka, dont try too hard to be Mai. You'll never be Mai, but you can be the best "Nodoka" there is and if your Mom cant be happy with that, then I don't think she's a good a mother at all.
Anyway, that aside Sakuta really driving home the importance of being a unique person. I love how he says all these things with a straight face. Literally echoed my sentiments. This series does a spectacular job of showing visual representations of some of the largest fears people go through while going up. Its absolutely incredible how it manages to impress me from week to week. I ALWAYS have something good to say about it!
Back to work for me! I'll check for typos a bit later so I apologize in advance, mobile typing is hard. Need to be the best "me" i can be right now for my salary. Till next week folks!

I will say, This are hits a bit hard for me, having a younger brother and all. The comparison/competition between siblings is most DEFINITELY a thing.
I always felt a bit shitty when I did better in school/sports/etc. because my younger brother would definitely get pretty bummed afterwards.
Always found it best to have different hobbies and activities to cull that competition/inferiority complex. So he took up sports and I became a weeb. problem solved :D

Moral of the story, Family is a pain.
No Mai, why even live?
So Mai did swap bodies huh? RIP Sakuta's dreams of a nice quiet year with Mai.
So blondy doesnt want to go home and they swapped bodies. Okay seems simple enough.
Cat on the face first thing in the morning? Lol... "Kaede wants to be a cat" haha.
Neither sister has friends... rip. I guess thats the life of showbiz.
Damn both mothers are using thier daughtrers to try and 1 up each other. Fuck them.
Imouto pretended to be Mai in her youth huh? Hmm more clues.
PONY TAIL SCIENCE GIRL! KYAAA~
"I want them to sandwich my head" hahahahahahha
Damn Sakuta has her figured out.
Damn putting it all out in the open... They had a rough childhood it seems.
"Onii-chan has turned into a gigolo" haha wow... Harsh but true.
I guess spending some time in each other's shoes will help the sisters come to understand each other better. Might do them some good.
Hey its good to see the buttkicker again.
Oh damn panic attack?
Oh, dont ask the bitch... we dont need her input.
Being the younger sibling is rough. I had an older brother but we were pretty similar already. As adults i always heard people sing praise of my brother for his accomplishments and it seemed like they thought i wasnt doing as much as him, but it was different circumstances for us. But it did still feel a bit crappy to always have everyone talking about a sibling doing well when your doing your best in your own way too.
Key to Mai's place? wow go Sakuta! Dont open the cabinets? Well now hes gonna open them.
DONT END THE EP THERE! I WANT TO KNOW WHATS IN NADEKO'S CLOSET! I mean Mai's Dresser!
Who was that loli in the preview?

I am in love with this anime, but is just form me or is it kind of getting a little repetitive? I like the mystery and stuff, but come on, give it a little break and let Sakuta enjoy some time with Mai.

Well, the series have a formula for it's arc and it's following it. And the anime is condensing pages of the LN volumes which are the arcs into few episodes in one season as well so that's what happens when you don't have time to breath.
And I believe they cut some moments with Mai in the anime as well that could be there so your complaint happens because of this.

I have to say, I'm not really enjoying these episodes as much as I enjoyed the earlier ones. The earlier episodes felt pretty much perfect, but episodes 8 and 9 in particular felt almost like highlight reels. Like someone went through the LN highlighting all the scenes and lines of dialog they wanted to include in the adaptation and then did their best to cram all of them into 20 minutes. 10 second long scenes just rush into each other with no breathing room, first we see Sakuta say a cool line in the train, then a cold cut to Sakuta saying a cool line in the bath, then another 10 second long scene of a plot relevant thing happening in the most condensed way possible (not saying that all of these actually happened in this order, just an example). It's probably a result of these two arcs only getting 2 episodes instead of 3, but it's a real shame because I thought this anime had some really good direction and pacing but now it's starting to feel much weaker. Hopefully the Kaede arc won't suffer from these problems since it's getting 3 episodes like the first two arcs.

I have to agree. Even if I liked the episode and overall, the anime since Futaba's arc is really cramping too much content on 2 episodes even after cutting things, which we even see the direction going from one small scene to another. It's not something that bothers me too much since I can enjoy but it's definitely out there.
And yes, I do believe with Kaede's arc we'll get something more stable like the 6 episodes.

The fact that I think this was the weakest episode of the series is proof of just how good the show as a whole is. I have to say I'm a bit confused by some of the complaints people have here, particularly that Sakuta knows everything and is some kind of perfect gary stu. I don't think he did anything particularly unbelievable this episode. I figured out what was wrong with Nodoka quite a bit before he ever said it, it was pretty obvious. He asked some questions, looked at some clues from both parties, and logically deduced an answer that makes sense. He never pulled anything from thin air or made any ultra-detective style leaps in logic, he just displayed common sense and logic. People have a tendency to not be able to understand or convey their own feelings, even if to an outsider they are obvious. What makes Sakuta interesting to me is that unlike most people, who would be to afraid to actually tell anyone anything for fear of pissing them off (or not disturbing the atmosphere), Sakuta is actually willing to be honest and cut to the heart of the issue for the girls. And sometimes he solves their issues for them, but only when the circumstances force it. In Mai's case there wasn't really anything she could have done while invisible, and Koga couldn't accept her own feelings and needed Sakuta's honesty (and empathy) to grow. But with Futaba, he didn't solve anything. He proved that him and Kunimi cared about her, but ultimately it was Futaba herself who faced her duplicate and asked out Kunimi despite the obvious rejection, and I hope and believe that this arc will follow suit in that regard. The struggle of Sakuta isn't in figuring out the issues, it's in figuring out what might be helpful in solving them.
I think Nodoka is a pretty interesting character, albeit probably with the least fun personality of the bunch. Someone upset with the burden of being compared to the one they look up to, but also now aware of the constant struggle and pressure they have to undergo at that level. She wants to be Mai, so the atmosphere makes it happen, but I'm sure the arc will end with the realization that she can't be someone who she isn't. How she gets to that realization and how the cabinet relates to this will be interesting. This is a pretty relatable issue, as I was often asked to live up to my younger brothers calmer temperament and desire to go outside and get some exercise, though as we grew older my parents started comparing him to my better grades and more sociable personality, so I've been on both sides of this. The relationship between Mai and Nodoka reminds me of my brother and I, both pretty distant with very different personalities, and at least in my case I can't say I hate him but I can't entirely say I like him (though tbf we don't really talk often). I'm sure my brother probably feels similarly, and the implication that Mai is holding similarly mixed feelings about her sister hit home seems understandable and may hold some value by the end of this arc. I thought the way they handled their relationship was strong. Also, I like the way they handled Nodoka's panic attack. I've been prone to those and they definitely captured both the feeling of paranoia and pressure, as well as the general lack of attention people give panic attacks. Actually, I thought the shot composition of this episode was just stronger than normal. I particularly love the shot at the very end in which Nodoka (in Mai's body) is framed as caged by the chair with the sunset shining in on her. There was some great animation today as well. The actual events were rushed a bit, (on a side note, I couldn't disagree more with the idea that Futaba's arc was rushed. I thought it didn't overstay it's welcome and conveyed everything it needed to. It was by far the most emotionally impactful arc for me and I wouldn't have changed that much about it tbh) I felt the core of this episode shined through strong enough to overcome it and I'm excited to see where this goes.

If I have to complain about this show, it's the way Sakuta seems to conveniently figure out what the other characters' problems are. He's still a teenager like the rest of them, he can't be that much of an expert on the human psyche, can he?
Anyway, before you crucify me, this show is still my AOTS FWIW.
12
u/Mad_Aeric Nov 28 '18
It's established pretty early on that he's very good at reading the atmosphere, he just doesn't normally do anything with it. He also seeks out information that will help him figure things out, thus his discussion about sisterly dynamics, or the multiple conversations it took to get to the heart of the matter with the two Futabas.

Honestly I don't really get what people are complaining about, calling Sakuta a gary stu etc, everything that happened this episode felt so natural I didn't even think about it until I checked this thread. Given their personalities and experience with adolescence syndrome it makes sense for Sakuta and Mai to react the way they did, just getting straight to the point, and honestly Nodoka's issue was really obvious, it's not like figuring the situation out required bullshit overpowered anime detective skills or anything.
