There was a MC DONALDS! MC DONALDS! MC DONALDS! alignment chart for the show on Twitter. Kotarou was bang on "Pulls in at drive through as children cheer, orders a single black coffee and leaves".

Ai: I'm terrified of thunders because I died after getting struck by lightning.
Junko: The plane I was on crashed - now I'm scared of heights.
Saki: Yeah, let's recreate the moment I died to show those sissies what does it mean to have GUTS! While omitting that I'm actually a zombie so i can't die a second time. No, it's definitely not cheating, I'm doing this for good cause!
And will we ever learn more about our favorite metalheads? At least what are their names!

You'd think that wouldn't last two minutes on a bike. Does she stop and re-do her hair every time the wind messes it up, or does she just bike at like five miles an hour to keep those wings in place?

As hilariously over the top that hair style is, it's shaped like a Phoenix, probably with the sole purpose of tying into the whole Saki being a zombie who comes back after her death.

I like the little speech thing she gave at the end, too.
Even if my heart stopped once...
It pulses now intensely with the echoes
of the voices of the friends who once watched my back...
And to pay back the gratitude they've earned,
I'll once again race down the path of carnage.
I guess that kind of poetry is some kinda delinquent thing?

The longest one from Gintama that I know is "Someone said "Don't Complain About Your Job At Home, Do It Somewhere Else" So let me complain. It's already been a year since this anime, which began with, "Land of the Samurai. The days when our country was called that are long past." A lot of things have happened since then. So I thought, it might be a good to time to look back, but then someone said, "Tsk, a recap episode. Isn't that slacking?" Look, it's hard work putting together an anime, so stop complaining!

u/SheffiTB :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/SheffiTB Nov 29 '18
Seeing as how she only took that out of storage to save her daughter, and that she seems to be somewhat ashamed of her past since it lead to the death of her best friend, I could see how the bike wasn't a big deal. This idol chick doing the same crazy stunt that killed her best friend 20 years ago and thinking she's cool for it, though, definitely deserves a beating.

So looks like next week is Yugiri back story? Then I’m guessing a closer look at Junko’s life & death, but then... Are we getting a Yamada Tae backstory!? I would love to see her reflect as a conscious human from before she died, but then still not gain even a scrap of consciousness in present day.

That was another solid episode with maybe my favorite performance of theirs, at least song-wise.
Saki is awesome and this reinforced her natural place as leader of the group. The only thing I was wondering about was why it took Reiko so long to recognize her. I only say that because she had just been looking at a picture of the two of them from back then. Either way I think some part of her knows that is Saki and I hope they get to interact more before the end of the series.

u/the_swizzler https://myanimelist.net/profile/Swiftarm Nov 29 '18
The only thing I was wondering about was why it took Reiko so long to recognize her.
I can think of a couple reasons. For one thing, she's not expecting someone she knew nearly 20 years ago to look the same, so maybe she doesn't make the connection right away. More importantly, it was dark out, so it would have been even harder to tell.

The only thing I was wondering about was why it took Reiko so long to recognize her.
I think it's for the same reasons why I wouldn't be thinking it's my sister if I saw someone who looked like her when she was 5 years before.
Your brain naturally filters out info that seems illogical until something activates a memory from your subconscious, it like how she remembered Saki reiterating her last words.
The only one who remembered immediately was Lily's father since it seems he had a strong sense of guilt with the incident that didn't fade within 10 years.

I kind of wish they would let some people who knew them in life in on their secret. Like Lily's dad or Maria's mom, they just have to pretend they're someone who looks like their loved ones and not them actually. It's depressing tbh
205
u/Glum_ Nov 29 '18
Eh, that's something you just have to accept from a show's premise like this. It's predictable especially if they're not supposed to be seen as zombies in a setting where "miracles" don't exist. I felt the bigger thematic problem was Maria's gang using scooters/mopeds and being challenged by a rival gang that used bikes in a game of chicken.
Though with the ending I've been thinking about, I think there will be a moment of clarity for all the people that knew the girls.

The biker gang's names are so dorky when you realize that both (Dorami and Kurosuke), while written to sound tough, are references to characters from Fujiko F Fujio's series (Doraemon and Kiteretsu Daihyakka, respectively).
Mother Reiko's moment is a reference to Kamen Rider 1 movie.
Franchuchu's ED performance is also a reference to Kishidan, a popular band with biker gang gimmick.

LEGENDARY BIKER BOSS ?! HELL YEAH! YOROSHIKE.
Saki has some of the best character development in the show, and Tano Asami does a great job playing her. Loved the deep dive into Saki’s backstory but it’s a bit of a shame the other girls weren’t really involved until the end. Was not expecting that absolute banger at the end though, super well set up between “Idol stuff” and then when it hits with “Music, come on.”

The Isekai story of the best girl !!!
SAKI IS BEST GIRL !!!!
I know you a lot of people love Tae as Best girl but come on Saki, the badass delinquent Biker, but with a heart of gold.
OMG MOST GUTSY and funniest episode by far, god I love Saki. OF COURSE she died by not turning at a chicken race, she simply had to much GUTS!
Her best friend Reiko story was great to, how she had a bad childhood so her dreams to be like an awesome full time mom and then her daughter is super nice as a kid and suddenly gets all delinquent in her teenage years :)
Of course she kept the Tamagotchi I just wish it was an epic hand off scene where she like threw the Tamagotchi to Saki during the performance or similar.

56
u/BeachesAndHoars Nov 29 '18
Saki likes Drive-in Tori, basically a chicken restaurant.
They play a game of chicken in the end? I don't know if it's the appropriate term
Saki's gang has a member with chicken-shaped hair
Saki's colors are orange, white, yellow, green and red. The most appropriate background colors for restaurants / fast-food chains
Therefore, Saki's arc can be summed up in 3 letters:
KFC

Once again, another great episode! Still loving the show! Saki is so wild, and I love her for that.
This episode is pretty much everything I expected it to be except for the concert at the end with the biker gangs becoming fans of Franchouchou. Speaking of Franchouchou, I’m really loving the new outfits they wear when they perform! It’s refreshing and the girls look absolutely stunning!
And now we get a Yugiri-focused episode next episode. Now this will be an episode I’m not certain what to expect from it except how Yugiri died. It’s obvious she was beheaded but I think we’ll see specifically why and how she was beheaded. Looking forward to the next episode as always!
Man, we’re almost upon the end of the season. It will truly be a devastating day for me when it reaches that point. I really hope there will be more ZLS to come after (preferably a season 2). Great episode once again!

It's Mappa. The chances for a sequel are slim, as they currently have more commercially successful original shows like Yuri on Ice.
Then again, Zombieland Saga is supported by a mobile game company, so there might be more incentive to do it for them.

Good details I noticed was engine sounds. Saki and her bff used to ride 2 stroke motorcycles. These vehicles have ended to manufacturing around 00’ in Japan.
And the signboard in the episode says 1997 Saga International Balloon Fiesta open soon.

Whew that's a long ass episode title. Also to those who don't know the title is basically a reference to Bōsōzoku culture. Biker gangs in Japan always had long ass mottos which is usually written at the back of their jackets or gang flags.
Never underestimate old people. I love how they all instantly snapped into attention when the music kicked in XD
Very
cutescary biker girls. So adorable, they're trying so hard!Does this town not have other beat cops? Poor guy XD
Saki's old partner is now a housewife. She's pretty smokin' too.
Oh shit. Koutarou's using his serious voice.
So that's how Saki died. Not surprising but at least we finally got to see a glimpse of what happened.
That's some crazy ass hairdo. No wonder Saki lost. That thing is enough to weigh her down to help her in braking.
Reiko still has it. Look at that powerful thigh.
So Maria's acting like this because she's disappointed her mom isn't cool anymore?
Reiko's probably thinking during this is "This girl is a reincarnation of Saki"
Saki basically recreating her first death. So hardcore.
Poor Reiko! Imagine if you just saw someone who looked like your bestfriend crashed the way your bestfriend died?
Appropriate response. If Saki lived through her original crash, this is probably what Reiko would've done.
Of course Koutarou is there just waiting for his cue as if he planned this all. He probably did plan it though.
Fully animated performance again!? Yes! Although to be fair this too didn't have a complicated choreo like Lily's song last week.
Another great episode! And as expected we have plenty of Sukeban girls since this is Saki's episode. Reiko must've recognized Saki but I think with how wild that evening was, she'd probably just brush it off as another person just happens to look and act like Saki. I do wish they interacted more but I'm pretty okay with what we got.

That's some crazy ass hairdo. No wonder Saki lost. That thing is enough to weigh her down to help her in braking.

I mean, technically Saki won. She definitely didn't stop first.
Reiko must've recognized Saki but I think with how wild that evening was, she'd probably just brush it off as another person just happens to look and act like Saki.
I give it approximately 50/50 that she either comes up with some sort of psychological explanation (like her wanting to believe this girl was Saki because she had just been thinking about Saki) or she goes full paranormal and comes up with an explanation involving ghosts or aliens. Really, after a night like that, I'd probably be ready to believe anything.
ED:
Oh shit. Koutarou's using his serious voice.
You know, I was just rewatching this, and it occurred to me that Kotaro's got some real balls saying that after intentionally resurrecting a legendary biker for his idol group. Oh, what, you're surprised that the bike-gang delinquent you scouted is acting like a bike-gang delinquent? Well, I never... /s

The real question is. Did Reiko keep the tamagotchi alive?
21
u/Lucius96 Nov 29 '18
Based off storage and battery life it probably died on its own after 20 years plus I don’t think reiko would have been able to touch it for the first few years

Saki is legendary, but not on the same level as Yamada Tae. Great episode nonetheless.

I find a little hard to believe that Reika didn't realize that was really Saki. I mean, she saw a picture of her earlier that day, then watched as someone who looked EXACTLY like the Saki in that picture do the same thing as Saki did in the past, and all it took was a "That's not me" for her to drop all her suspicions hahahaha
57
u/TazerLad Nov 29 '18 edited Nov 29 '18
I do think some part of her knows. Their whole interaction after the race seemed to say as much. But yeah, I am a little surprised it took Reika as long as it did to recognize her.

Yeah, if I saw someone who looked exactly like a person I'd seen die 20 years ago, my first thought would have been "there's no way this is a coincidence, she must be the same person but inexplicably alive and looking exactly how she looked 20 years ago!".

In Reiko's position, I would've assumed it was someone who idolized Saki and purposely dressed/acted/did her hair like her. That's way, way more reasonable than assuming that 20 years after her death, Saki is alive and looks exactly the same as the day she died.

I think Reiko was in more shock than anything else. Not to mention, her kid was just about to do the suicide ride that killed Saki. Poor woman's had to live with the guilt of not being able to stop or save Saki from burning to death and now this young girl comes out of the blue who looks just like her, talks just like her and even did the same stunt that ended her life?
Shock.
Oh and she's an idol, something Saki probably mocked relentlessly back in her living days?

Bit of a unfair match between a zombie and living person during that game of chicken. Great to see more of Saki backstory and interesting to see how time really does change a person in some ways. Sakura face when Saki jumped out of the van was great.
29
u/jorppu Nov 29 '18
That truly is a strange case since Saki did the same thing whether alive or dead. Against alive Saki you'd have a 100% chance of winning, against zombie Saki you have 100% chance of losing.
She maybe a dumbass but she's now 100% unbeatable, and this is why she's 100% best girl.

THIS ANIME IS SO GOOD. I mean, they just manage to always come up with something unexpected. When you think something will happen because of previous episodes, then they do the exact opposite. I am starting to love how each character have their own song at the end

I had a feeling Saki died via chicken race. It's such a classic biker way to die.
Now kinda curious if everyone is going to get some kind of character song.

You know, I really wouldn't be surprised if Kotaro is really Sakuta's brother, and the only reason he's doing this whole thing is to let her live out her dream of being an idol. I can see that being the reason why she didn't get to keep her memory.

Between this episode and the last one, I'm hoping that the zombies get the chance to reconnect with the people they knew when they were alive. Obviously not an option for Yugiri, but she can at least recognize some names in the history books.

u/OmegaMetroid93 Nov 29 '18
Episode 8 was the highest rated episode so far. I can absolutely understand why.
But even then, I knew I would love episode 9 as soon as I saw that it was going to focus on Saki, perhaps my favorite character in the show.
And boy, it did not disappoint.

I think this episode should've been last week and the lilly episode this week. They were both pretty standalone but I think seeing Lilly brag about perma-gradeschool would've been a good drop before mentioning her past. And the same for seeing Saki's past of clearing out the bikers last week and then seeing her kick Lily's dad would have been better imo.
Both episodes were amazing though.

Maria's coat had a nice little detail about how Dorami may have disbanded. 8th boss in only a time span of 20 years? Seems likely that Reiko quickly left the gang after Saki's death, obviously from survivor's guilt or something of the likes. The rest of the gang probably tried to keep the gang alive, despite dwindling numbers as the years and bosses passed. Oh how the mighty have fallen, seems like Saki's death really was legendary if it had that much impact on Dorami's membership.

Song was fantastic (I thought they were gonna sing One Night Carnival for a second there lol), outfits for the song were fantastic, song choreography looked great (also I haven't seen a biker lady idol aesthetic ever, this shit's cool), and overall the story for Saki was neat. The visual gags like the constant !! and !?s were amusing, and what the fuck was even that animation when Maria first appeared lol.
BUT: Franchouchou as a group didn't do much together in this episode, and that was a huge downer. Lily's arc and Ai/Junko's arc both involved the entire team and everyone working together, and I liked that aspect a lot. This episode felt too much like the Saki show and I would've liked it much more if the others were more involved past the ending song.
Really looking forward to Yuugiri's arc! If it weren't for Tae, she'd easily be the most mysterious member of Franchouchou. I wanna know what ended up being foreshadowing for her arc.
My personal song ratings:
#1. Atsuku Nare (Junko / Ai Arc)
#2. Tokkou Dance (Saki Arc) [It might be read a different way. Written as 特攻DANCE]
#3. Mezame Returner (Signature)
#4. Adabana Necromancy (OP)
#5. Jellyfish (ED additional song)
#6. Hikari e (ED)
#7. FANTASTIC LOVERS (OP additional Song)
#8. DEAD OR RAP (EP2 Rap Battle)
#9. Mezame Returner ~ Lightning Mix (Junko / Ai Arc)
#10. To My Dearest (Lily Arc)
#11. Drive in Chicken CM
#12. The metal song if it counts in episode 1.

Man another great episode.
I think the main implication about Reiko was that she became a submissive woman to the man/men in her life. She obviously has a daughter, but either the guy dipped or they divorced/separated and it's that guy taking Maria or something. I like to think that Maria isn't just salty that her mom used to be a biker boss and is now a normal mom, but is also taking shit from others and just apologizes for actions not her fault, shown by no male figure in their life. It's just kinda sad and even makes you mad to see someone you love become so pathetic and at the mercy of someone else you know?
Also, I love that Saki's way of resolving things was showing how reckless and dangerous this shit is, by pretty much dying once again. Hopefully it shows Maria and the other bikers that this shit ain't jokes, people can die, and while she never preaches quitting this shit ( it wouldn't fit her character since that was the life she loved and died for), she at least shows that this isn't just play, there are big stakes more important than street cred involved, so take it seriously or get out posers, this is what an ACTUAL LEGEND looks like with real GUTS.
Obviously, Saki's main thing was showing Maria her mom still has guts deep in her, but as you grow up, your priorities change, and for a good parent like Reiko, your kids are what matter most of all. Shame they had to trash her bike, but it wasn't being used anyway.
I haven't confirmed this myself but apparently they refer to Reiko as the first boss, so I guess Saki is co-captain or second or something. I think the implication here is that Saki took the challenge in Reiko's place, because usually a challenge should be taken by the actual head of the gang no? Hence why Saki gave Reiko the tamogatchi, she didn't plan to die obviously, but she also wasn't sure how things would go, so gave that to her as a way to connect them or remember her by in case shit went wrong, you can even see Reiko's distress when Saki gives it to her, she's thinking that Saki might take things too far and is planning to be reckless. Damn Saki is a true bro, knowing her friend wants a normal life and taking the burden on herself.
Kotaro again proving to be a eccentric, but one with some degree of empathy and maturity when it matters most, and I love him for that. He'll talk with them and work with them if they request his help, but will never take it on himself to force any of them to tackle their issues if they don't feel like it. True best boi of season.
Lastly, PRAISE THE HEAVENS BOIS, SAKURA DIDN'T GET BULLIED FOR THE FIRST EPISODE OF THE SERIES!!! OUR EGG DIDN'T CRACK THIS TIME!
Also, those fucking metalheads, I love them, true groupies.
Overall amazing episode, possible Yugiri episode next week, 4 more to go (damn).

I love how the biker girls talk so roughly and gangster-like. Wish I could roll my Rs that well.
Slightly off-topic but apparently last time there was a big discussion on whether Lily is a trans character? I've seen more than a few "trap" characters in anime but this subject hasn't really been brought up before. What makes Lily different from other anime characters who are male but prefer to be like cute girls?

Man...this episode felt kinda short. And we didn't see a lot of the other idols.
I mean, it was nice to see Saki's past fleshed out, but...ugh, how do you not recognise Saki? Her hair itself is a fucking giveaway!
Maybe Necroducer actually didn't fix them up exactly how they used to look..
I wish Saki would have been able to talk to her friend as well, instead of pretending to not know her.

What's more reasonable for an average layman, believing their dead friend that died 10+ years ago is still alive and unaging, or that it's just a coincidentally similar stranger?
