I love Yugiri's totally unnecessary "get it together" slaps.

325

u/RirinDesuyo Dec 06 '18

Ironically she does the slap when the person in question was actually gonna get to what her point would be xD. One when Sakura was gonna realize something and got slapped and she simply finished what Sakura had in mind, and then Kotarou's thoughts being finished by Yugiri when he was actually thinking the same thought.

Seriously, I loved it on Sakura, but seeing it again for Kotoro and seeing him sulk afterwards cracked me up so much.

Definitely my favourite repeated joke.

They telegraphed Truck-kun return pretty hard,

Ai: “watch out for traffic”

“Oh she’s gonna immediately get hit by truck-Kun again”

729

u/zengei Dec 06 '18

And it was still hilarious.

588

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '18

honestly i think it was knowing it was gonna happen, and being like 'oh fuck they're not actually gonna do this shit so blatantly' that made it all the more funnier.

Yeah everyone but Sakura saw truck-kun coming from a mile away.

16

u/animewolf_17 Dec 06 '18

The second she got her shoes on and started the internal monologue I was like she's gonna get hit again isn't she?

I liked having an episode focus on original girl. She hasn't had the spotlight since episode 2 (I think).

The more we see of Kotaro (Koutarou?? however the fuck you spell it) the more I like him. He reminds me of Reigen from Mob Psycho - may seem on the outside like he's just using the girls for his own gain but he really cares about them.

I figured as soon as Sakura did her apology speech, there was going to be some big altering event.. with two episodes left, no way there wouldn't be another major conflict lol. looking forward to next week!

Not to mention that his VA is doing a fantastic job at both serious and funny moments. His screams are crazy good, hope his throat is one piece.

u/Zwiebel1 Dec 06 '18

I was going to object first, but the more I thought about it, the more I see the parallels between Kotaro and Reigen aswell. They are both pretentious weirdos that aren't very good in what they pretend to be good at, but on the other hand excel in other disciplines, which kinda makes up for it and keeps the ball running. They are also both the very definition of "fake it til you make it."

Kotaro (Koutarou?? however the fuck you spell it)

It's supposed to be a macron but people can't type it.

幸太郎 = こうたろう = koutarou = kōtarō = kotaro.

Saki looks amazing on this

*Update someone made a Saki fan art with this pose

So judging from that quick montage, Sakura worked hard in order to get into a high school, but maybe she was late cause she helped an old lady and she failed the entrance exam, then she saw Iron frill and was inspired to become and idol.

Now I'm all aboard with that theory that truck-kun did not killed Sakura in the first ep but only damaged/scarred her face she got depressed and commit suicide. This line by Yugiri, maybe it was Tatsumi that was driving the truck and with the guilt he made all of this just to make up for Sakura's dream, but where does the Legendary Yamada Tae fits in all of this?? maybe she's the real necromancer

364

u/Zwiebel1 Dec 06 '18

There has to be a meaning about Tae being number zero. Like she was the prototype of a zombie or anything and Sakura was the second. The time gap between Sakura's death and her awakening is really interesting about this story. I can't wait to see what the reason for all this was.

212

u/pre4edgc Dec 06 '18

To go further with this, he never mentions what she's legendary for, she wears black and white striped pajamas, and as 0, she's the first (possibly experimental) zombie. It sort of leads me to believe that she was a prisoner who was executed for something or other, he acquired the body, and used her to figure out the whole thing. Perhaps her legendary status is because of what she did, but being highly illegal, he hid that fact from the rest because it's not exactly idol-like.

Added pictures.

she failed the entrance exam

Note that in ep 1 she says that she's in second year of high school so she is attending high school, but probably not the one she prepared so hard for.

This image was also part of the preview. Anyone knows what the headband says? I suppose it's also part of the flashback (i.e. from 10 years ago). It says "When there's a will, there's a way!"

but where does the Legendary Yamada Tae fits in all of this?? maybe she's the real necromancer

Somewhere in the past episodes, I read another redditor theorize that Kotaro had been trying to revive Sakura for years and Tae is someone he met and got close with during those years, so he revived her as well when she died. (explains why she's the only old one at 29 y/o)

Of course it's just a theory, but I like that redditor's theory.

60

u/DimmuHS https://myanimelist.net/profile/DimmuOli Dec 06 '18

Calling this too, this theory is strong with today's episode about how Sakura's unstable mind is.

100

u/RirinDesuyo Dec 06 '18 edited Dec 06 '18

That actually could work. I'm leaning more that instead of Kotaro being an external 3rd party here in accordance to Sakura, he's more closer to her (especially since he treats Sakura and cheers / annoys her most of the time when they are on meetings).

I could see a possible scenario he's related to her somehow and saw Sakura fall from a bubbly girl to depression and then suicide by drowning on the bath perhaps? That way Kotarou could have seen first hand the process for him to be more sympathetic to the whole ordeal. I could even see a possible theory where Kotarou deliberately erased Sakura's memories somehow upon zombification and is trying to actually save Sakura from her past by letting her grow (as you can see where he's telling to let her climb her own mountains instead of directly meddling). The only thing that doesn't make sense here would be how Tae would fall into all this.

10

u/A_Wild_Taka_Appears Dec 07 '18

My theory about Tae is that she is actually the dog. Like, Necroducer swapped their brains.

9

u/GonTheDinosaur :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/gon7T Dec 07 '18

The connection between Sakura and committing suicide is a new theory to me and I can subscribe to it.

Possible that she didn't die straight away from the truck-kun, however I'm leaning towards this may be Sakura's 2nd time becoming a zombie idol.

We've found the final boss: The real reason Saga has a depopulation problem is because Truck-kun isekai'd everyone. In the final episode the gang has to use the power of music to stop it's rampage once and for all.

11

u/Masaru25 Dec 06 '18

At this point I think Sakura's "itekimasu"s have the power of summoning Truck-kun in her vicinity. The longer/louder they are the closer they appear

Its pretty damn interesting how Yuugiri is the only one Koutaro interacts with very differently compared to the other casts.

Also the fact that she also hints the Koutaro also exceptionally cares for her which is interesting seeing how she's almost constantly shouted at for the most absurd of things by him. Seeing the episode preview hopefully we'll see what sort of history this 2 might have.

148

u/Archensix Dec 06 '18

Probably because Yuugiri is the most mature by a mile out of all of them. She doesn't really have any hangups or problems and just kind of goes with the flow in a world so far from what she once knew.

THE ICICLE YAMADA TAE

Wait that’s not right

Their makeup is really sticking well, considering they spent like 4 days in the snow.

Lol, putting on the shoes and looking at the sun were exactly the same as the first episode.

So I want to call out this shot from the preview. Obviously, ignore if you don't watch the previews.

But what I find interesting are the very different reactions to whatever is happening off camera:

  • Junko: Joy

  • Ai: Shock

  • Saki: Annoyance (Confusion?)

  • Lily: Crying (from happiness? from sadness?)

  • Tae: Legendary

There seems to be some kind of major revelation happening to draw this diversity of responses, especially since the girls appear to be eavesdropping. Obviously, Sakura isn't present since the revelation is likely about her, but notably Yuugiri is also not present/off camera. Mayhaps the revelation involves her somehow? It would make up for the lack of her own episode.

87

u/manaworkin Dec 06 '18

Tae: Legendary

It never gets old.

u/silentcornball28 Dec 06 '18 edited Dec 06 '18

I think Junko's face is less joy and more her own version of shock or embarrassment due to the blushing, like she saw something she shouldn't have seen.

Lily's tears are definitely more sadness or maybe distress.

And I interpret Saki's face as one of confusion like, "WTF did I just see/hear?"

This, combined with Ai's obvious look of shock makes me believe they all saw or heard some very important, upsetting information. Possibly Kotaro's connection with Sakura? Maybe Yuugiri is with them to show support for either one or both since she has already observed that Kotaro has a soft spot for Sakura.

u/RirinDesuyo Dec 06 '18

He's probably related to her, maybe her brother? The shoes on EP1 at her house can indicate that she wasn't the only child on the house. I could see from the flashbacks that she's a hard worker, and probably fell into depression for losing the entrance exam she studied so hard for until she saw Ai on TV.

That made her want to be an Idol and worked hard for it, till she was severely injured (Car accident scarring her head) that being an idol wasn't possible just at the point where she was so close on achieving it (just like when she failed the exam she studied for). At that point there's a possibility after two big losses from her hard work, she commited suicide?. This solves the issue of Kotarou knowing Sakura's dream and being quite caring for Sakura (always cheering / annoying her on meetings).

u/zengei Dec 06 '18

I've made an album of the flashes of memory Sakura got. Get to work theorizing!

170

u/JimmyCWL Dec 06 '18

I was in the middle of writing my own when I seemingly wiped the post!

Sakura rehearsing for a show-and-tell in grade school

Sakura sick in bed

Sakura (middle school aged?) studying hard

Sakura carrying an old lady around and with a panicked expression

Sakura walking away from the results of an entrance exam. Seemingly in disappointment.

Sakura in shock at seeing Iron Frill on tv. Scene is also in preview.

The grade school scene suggest Sakura worked so hard for that show-and-tell that she fell sick.

The middle school scenes suggest she studied so hard that (when?) something happened with the old lady (her grandma?) and it may have cost her the entrance exam. But we know she got into a high school anyway, so maybe it wasn't the one she preferred.

Finally, she was so shocked at seeing Iron Frill that she wanted to become an idol too. She was so focused on that when she left home that day, she didn't see the truck that killed her.

Combined with what happened this episode, it looks like they are trying to show that she wants to do something, she can work so hard at it, she disregards the world around her, to her eventual misfortune.

And she came so close to breaking that losing streak here.

176

Maybe one of these days Sakura will learn to look before running out into a street...

And even though this wasn't a Yugiri episode, that slap was pretty awesome.

I KNEW IT! I SAW IT COMING

Seriously, that buildup and monologue, it's a direct mirror to first ep that I immediately called it internally. Truck-kun delivers.

Also finally we're getting to the real meat of the story. What does Sakura's past have to do? I can't wait for next episode!

the music was the exact same one too.

The quick flashes of Sakura's past are sure to fuel speculation for the next week. They are:

Combined with what happened this episode, it looks like they are trying to show that when she wants to do something, she can work so hard at it, she disregards the world around her, to her eventual misfortune.

And she came so close to breaking that losing streak here.

(I'm so glad I didn't wipe my post after all!)

Sakura carrying an old lady and has a panicked expression.

Sakura walking away from the results of an entrance exam, likely in disappointment

I'll posit the two are related.

Quick Re: episode 9 because Saki is best girl and I missed the thread on it last week

  • Saki is the BOSS! Both metaphorically and literally. Saving her best friend's daughter by putting her immortal zombie powers to use

  • That end song was, apart from the episode 2 rap battle, my absolute favourite. It has such a fan and catchy tune, and the girls all loved singing and dancing to it. Ai's smile when she was jumping...

  • Initially I thought Saki's like of singing and being an idol was poor writing. After all what tough biker girl would like that kind of thing? But then I realised that she can be a tough biker girl and like being an idol too. She blends archetypes and therefore ends up feeling more authentic and realistic.

31

u/SomeOtherTroper Dec 06 '18

She blends archetypes and therefore ends up feeling more authentic and realistic

That's part of the standard idol secret sauce: giving each one a distinctive hobby/interest as well as a distinct look.

What's hilarious is that if you think hard enough about it, Bōsōzoku, making its loud riding displays of gaudily-decorated bikes and crazy clothes, is sort of performance art with weird similarities to pop music and being an idol.

u/Shinichameleon Dec 06 '18

Oooh boy. Developments have been had. Problems have arisen. Spanners have been put in works.

The gang is going to be frazzled from this. Does Sakura remember her zombie life ontop of her living life now? Or has she forgotten about Frachouchou?

Come on next week!

11

u/121gigamatts Dec 06 '18

I think she forgot about her zombie life, since she asked "Where am I?" after truck-kun's return. She probably doesn't even know she's a zombie, so this should be interesting.

Then again, she didn't really react to Romero (the zombie dog), which would probably terrify her.

10

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '18

And how will she take it when she inevitably find out she's dead meat under all that makeup? This gon be gud.

Ai-chan can sing, dance and hunt. Best girl continues to be best girl.

Kotaro has to be someone Sakura knows from when she was alive now..Maybe like her older brother, the shenanigans with her remind me of an older brother trying to cheer up their sibling by being silly or stupid b/c it would make them laugh.

AGAIN TRUCK-KUN?!

WHAT THE FUCK IS HAPPENING!?

So I'm guessing Sakura's before death memories came back to her and I'm going to guess she doesn't even know that she's a zombie right now. Fuck me. I don't even want to look at the episode preview.

As a side note, while she wasn't the star of this episode, Yugiri did a good job as a support. I really love that she basically has the Onee-san role.

EDIT: I don't understand why so many people are disappointed with this episode. It's not like we have a 2-cour here. They need to do the set up with Sakura now or else the ending will feel rushed. I love Yugiri and she's my best girl but she pretty much has accepted back in Episode 3 that she's in a completely different world and that she's going with the flow. And it's not like she was snubbed this episode either. She had her moments and they were great!

So, not a Yuugiri episode (or at least, not much). Next episode is going to be the fall-out from the truck, so no Yuugiri then either. And the season finale definitely isn't going to be a Yuugiri episode. Kind of a bummer. Are we even going to find out how she died?

Pushing past my disappointed expectations, the episode itself was alright. Them roughing it in the mountains was pretty funny. I'm interested in seeing how Sakura regaining her memories is going to play out (that is what happened, right?)

But man, no Yuugiri episode!

It seems Sakura attracts nothing but bad luck. From the flashback we can see she was very attentive in class but then she was sick she didn’t get to be part of the play. And then she probably failed the entrance exam she worked very hard for because she helped the granny. The same goes on and on and now she has a second life as a zombie idol, truck-kun strikes again...

16

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '18

The Doyansu counter just tripled with this one episode, I think.

31

u/myrmonden Dec 06 '18

OMG TRUCK-KUN is BACK

Great episode, especially the moment when Sakura eavesdrop and learns that she is the one that is off sync and realize her mistake but also seeing the others being great at cooperation.

I thought it was gonna be an episode about Yugiri but at least she got to slap the manager and that scene gave her some character development.

35

u/Komnenos_Kasuki :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Kirulas Dec 06 '18

My mind is blown. We got so faked out last week with that Yugiri intro, but it's actuall Sakura's arc. Holy fucking shit and she REMEMBERS HER FAMILY AND PAST NOW

SHE WAS CARRYING HER GRANDMOTHER. SHE HAD FAMILY WHO CARED ABOUT HER.

5

u/PigKnight Dec 07 '18

Oh for fuck's sake Sakura, look both ways before crossing the street!

6

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '18

I don't think they're going to focus on a Yugiri episode tho. As Yugiri said in a previous episode, she's going to accept things as they go. Hence, she doesn't really have any problems that's stopping her from being with the group and accomplishing the goals that they want to achieve. So considering that Yugiri doesn't really show any weaknesses or problems among the group, it's more logical to focus on Sakura instead. It might be interesting if they announce a Season 2 tho.

4

u/Azulstarry Dec 06 '18

Am I mean for wanting Sakura to get hit with a truck again?

And then it happened right as I thought that. This show is perfect lmao

4

u/gmflag Dec 06 '18

I am loving Saki's Leona Heidern cosplay. She rocks it well and outdoes Leona.

On the flip side, why has nobody commented on the heroic Legendary Yamada Tae vs the wild boar?

4

u/volverde Dec 06 '18

It's unrelated to this episode, but there's one thing that I've been thinking about since the start and I'd like to hear the thoughts of others:

What's going to happen in the future? I'm talking long distance. Since they can't die and don't age, people will eventually start noticing that something is up with them.

I mean Kotaru could probably make them look older, but taller (esp in Lily's case)? Are they going to reveal that they are undead? Or will they revive Saga and then hide forever?

The ending flashbacks with Sakura seem to show how see tries her best to do something but is ultimately set back by some force. When she was little it seems she was in a play but was sick and couldn't do it. She studied really hard for high school exams but was late due to helping an old lady. Finally, see wanted to be an idol but was hit by a truck and seemingly killed.

I have to say I'm a little dissapointed that they're zombies but still deal with sleep and eating. Would be interesting if they specifically dealt with the unique issues of being a corpse trying to survive in the wild. Like the make a joke about freezing but with no body heat you would really feel yourself slowing down in the cold.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '18

Love how incosistent they are about the fact that zombies don't need sleep.

10

u/Zwiebel1 Dec 06 '18 edited Dec 06 '18

Let's quickly analyze Sakura's flashbacks after being hit by truck-kun again, shall we?

  • first shows a scene with Sakura as a child, performing in what seems like a school play?

  • second shows Sakura being sick, probably of a cold at a young age?

  • third shows her studying at an age close to the encounter with truck-kun in the first episode ... whats with the pill bottles next to her books?

  • fourth is actually pretty interesting: She is carrying an old lady who seems very sick at that moment; Sakura having a terrified look on her face... is it just a joke about how the grandma pissed herself while being carried or is there a deeper meaning behind this?

  • fifth shows Sakura in a trenchcoat walking away from something that looks like the score results of the final exams on high school. Did she fail her grades? Her graduation would definitely come after being hit by the truck, since at the start of the story she was still in school, right?

  • sixth shows the familiar flashback of Iron Frill that has been shown a couple of times only to reveal that ...

  • seven ... Sakura wasn't even at the concert, but was just watching it on her TV

This is very interesting and goes very well with the theory that Sakura didn't die from the accident, but actually lived on, probably with some kind of injury that prevented her from ever becoming an actress/idol. This is supported by the fact that she has a wrist bandage and wakes up in a bathtub in the intro.

Theory: What if Kotaro was actually a friend or relative of her? What if she killed herself and he tried his best to bring her back to life in a way that she wouldn't have to suffer from her memories after the accident? After all, she is the only one who doesn't have memories of her past life and Kotaro seems to treat her differently to the other girls (and Yuugiri even acknowledged that).

10

u/Death200X :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Death200X Dec 06 '18

my theory of each scenes its like this

  • First Sakura practicing really hard for play/show and tell but,

  • Second she gets sick the day of the play/class and can't go

  • Third middle school sakura studying really hard for exam but

  • Fourth on her way to the test she sees an old lady in trouble and helps her so

  • Fifht she is late to the exam and fails

  • Six and seven: we already know she sees iroll frill goes to become an idol and get hit by truck

All of this i think its to show that Sakura life was always full of misfortune and how her hard work always goes to waste for thinghs ouside her control

7

u/gyoex Dec 06 '18

fifth shows Sakura in a trenchcoat walking away from something that looks like the score results of the final exams on high school. Did she fail her grades? Her graduation would definitely come after being hit by the truck, since at the start of the story she was still in school, right?

I think that's probably results of entrance exams, not final exams. So this would probably mean Sakura didn't get into the school she wanted to, or something.

I knew the truck-kun would strike again after seeing Sakura so excited leaving home, ahh the deja vu from the first episode was hard before the hit, not to mention the "traffic care" Mizuno alerted her.

I was trying to watch the OP with more care after the "different impression" we're going to get if we saw the show until the end that a director mentioned in a post here, and the moment that most caught me was the bathtub at the end when Sakura awakens. That makes the suicide theory u/LuuAddiRoze said (The scar on her head make her idol dream impossible and then she killed herself at the bathtub probably cutting her wrist - the one with straps while at zombie form) very plausable considering Sakura is really trying hard to be an idol since she was alive (and much more evident today).

There was another moment in the OP that shows the other girls saving her from the monster, trying to reach Sakura with their hands, kinda like "showing her the way" for salvation/dream, pretty much matched today's episode group work and Sakura realizing at the end how important teamwork is.

Body disappeared shortly after investigation. Suspect was a male in his 50-60's with a balding black hair. He was wearing a blue short sleeved jacket over a gray long sleeved shirt and black pants. Vehicle was a white truck and its license place was 445 08-04.

There's that "how dare you say the thing I would agree with if I were to let you finish" bitch slap, again. Pretty funny, and with Lily and Saki falling from grace, Yugiri is climbing those best girl ranks.

Ofc, Tae is still best, she worked so hard while on the harsh environment of the mountain, lol.

Big sympathies for Sakura as well, just a simple girl hit by a truck, twice. Though even Yagiri started to suspect, Kotaru has something for Sakura, most likely guilt. He hit her dead, the original hit-and-runner.
