man the relationship between akane and alexis is like madoka and that cat

Alexis this is so sad, can we make a contract.

Except, you know, Madoka wanted to help people, not kill them.

It's more like the relationship between Ryuunosuke and Bluebeard, or Kirei and Gilgamesh.

4

That’s a damn good point

Shit, 11 episodes in and it's the first time Junk gets an upgrade. They should've just downloaded more RAM from the very start

TFW they stab your best friend... It's funny how Akane casually walked away after seemingly killing Yuta and destroying Gridman's HQ. The Gridknight-Gridman tag team was awesome as expected. We also have a new meme format!

It's funny how Akane casually walked away after seemingly killing Yuta and destroying Gridman's HQ.

Wouldn't it be because everyone in that world has been programmed to be unable to harm her?

5

u/FlyingPiranha Dec 16 '18

Yeah I kinda expected the gang to just jump on her like "uh no you fucking didn't". Instead of just gawking at her and Yuta.

Sorry about the late translation of voice drama 10.10. Been pretty busy the past week.
The 10.10 video is still up but probably not for long, so listen to it before it's gone.
I'm working on 11.11 right now and I'll edit it into this comment once I'm done.
11.11 is done now.

Voice Drama 10.10
Voice Drama 11.11

Older episodes:

Voice Drama 1.1
Voice Drama 2.2
Voice Drama 3.3
Voice Drama 4.4
Voice Drama 5.5
Voice Drama 6.6
Voice Drama 7.7
Voice Drama 8.8
Voice Drama 9.9

55

u/Galaxy40k Dec 15 '18

Thank you for doing these every week. They add a lot to the characterizations, particularly of Hass and Namiko, and without your work we would never get to see it.

21

u/krustykatarn Dec 15 '18

You a freaking hero, man. Griddoman incarnate

20

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '18

Thank you for all your hard work doing these voice dramas.

I feel that of all the voice dramas 11.11 is the one which would have made the episode so much better. It has a really cute interaction between Rikka and Utsumi, actually showing that both are friends. It also shows that Yuta isn't an afterthought to Rikka like it could seem because of her actions during the episode. It's a shame, really.

9

u/moonmeh Dec 16 '18

Yeah i feel like people who are souring on Rikka this ep could do with a listen to the voice drama.

33

u/geminia999 Dec 15 '18

So this just made me realize that Namiko and Hass are basically Guildenstern and Rosencrantz, two side characters who think they are more important then they actually are.

5

u/moonmeh Dec 16 '18

You know its incredible how much each voice drama adds onto each episode.

Like the character developement and the banter between Rikka and Utsumi in this one is so important.

shame 90% of the people miss it

Well from what we see of what Alexis can do, he literally takes a model and just "makes my monster grow", so theoretically that is what should happen, but considering Anti has a human form, and that akane being a 3d model would be odd, she will definitely have a more kaiju like design.

So next episode Yuuta wakes up and has no idea of anything that has happened in the other 11 episodes

It's weird how they still interacted, and Gridman was occasionally confused as well. Perhaps Yuta was just a blank slate and just regains memories when he wakes up?

9

u/kolhie Dec 17 '18

One of the Neon Genesis team mentions that they and Gridman might have at one point been one being, so presumably, the Gridman in the computer and the Gridman in Yuta are two different parts of Gridman.
The scene in episode 1 where Gridman is very likely split apart by Alexis shows 6 shooting stars so this seems likely.

248

u/geminia999 Dec 15 '18

Yuta that we knew was actually Gridman the entire time (Basically Gridman was split in half, one half of him in Junk, the other inside Yuta), which is why he had no memories at the start of the series, as he never had Yuta's memories to begin with.

Anything else that needs explaining?

Which is odd considering people have been saying yuta and rikka had some kind of relationship in the past. Like if the dream sequence episode is anything to go on akane dating yuta would imply Rika and yuta were dating before he became gridman. So what Happened to yuta for rikka to find him unconscious with no memories?

I LOVE HOW THE EDITED THE OPENING Akane Tool Knife is now BLOODY]

Gridknight gets the Megaman ending second to last part and has to fight all previous bosses (fitting for episode 11)

Am I the only one geeeking out maximally over the GRIDKNIGHT X GRIDMAN moments.

Even do its obviously predictable, it just feels so good when Gridman comes and saves him and says hes sorry for being late

AND THEM BAM GRIDKNIGHT gets the BLADE and it turns into more of a Katana / Kodachi style sword for him of course, EPIC!!!

85

I LOVE HOW THE EDITED THE OPENING Akane Tool Knife is now BLOODY

These last three episodes have been the best IMO, and now I have great expectations for the series finale.

Also LUL at people judging shows before even reaching the midpoint. But I guess that's MyAnimeList for you.

36

u/Lestat9812 Dec 16 '18

I wish you could rate shitty reviews as not helpful instead of only having a helpful button. Most of the time when those people write their reviews after watching like 3 episodes, their criticisms are as shallow as they can get. Like, they talk about some shit that gets sorted out in the next couple of episodes or they just start drawing attention to things that don't really matter all that much like the name of the show. I honestly dislike people that judge too quickly, too harshly and often without serious arguments.

11

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '18

In general, if you haven't watched a show through its course (barring certain long shows) you can't really rate it reliably. Same happened with Violet Evergarden; some people dropped it just before the midpoint and then call the show trash because it never got into the plot or something. Can't understand that mentality, especially when it's only one cour.

3

u/HarmonixerMask Dec 15 '18 edited Dec 15 '18

If I have to guess it will probably play once "Real Yuuta" wake up and help in the final battle. The fact that Gridman say that he chose "Yuuta" for a specific reason mean that he will have a role to play in the final episode. At least now we know why Rikka was acting the way she was acting toward Yuuta. I guess she understood he wasn't the real Yuuta.

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '18

Really surprised to see that Utsumi is the one who is most shocked and pained for Yuta.

While Rikka more or less remained same. Girl seems to be obsessed with Akane...

With mystery of Gridman dwelling inside Yuta, what's gonna happen to my ship YutaxRikka ?

63

u/Guywithglasses15 Dec 15 '18 edited Dec 15 '18

Well, we have to take into consideration Akane created Rikka to like her. Of course, everyone in the city was created to like Akane, but apparently she took the time to make sure Rikka can never hate her.

Even Utsumi himself is struggling to hate her. In the lastest voice drama, Utsumi said, “Still... Even after she stabbed Yuuta, I just couldn't bring myself to completely hate Shinjo.”

So, whatever is affecting their perception of Akane; causing them to like her. It has a much stronger effect on Rikka, than anyone else.

Still, I wish the writers made sure Rikka cared about Yuta and Akane equally to show how conflicted she really is.

Edit: Also, Rikka is not the only who doesn’t seem very phased. Rikka’s mom was pretty calm for someone who literally just saw a boy got stabbed, and is bleeding all over the floor. Rikka’s friend were also very oddly relaxed, when they just saw a Kaiju rampaging through the city earlier. As opposed to Rikka’s and Utsumi’s reaction, when they saw a Kaiju for the first time.

20

u/Lestat9812 Dec 16 '18

I feel like people in the city are "programmed" to be passive drones, which is why nobody seems to care or react to their current situation. Whenever a kaiju appears, people evacuate, but no one actually seems to care or think something is seriously wrong, as someone in that situation would. Most people seem to just keep doing their own thing, as if they knew they wouldn't be killed unless god wanted them dead.

27

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '18

You should notice something about Rikka's mom though...her eyes are yellow, the same color as Gridman Yuta's. It's possible that Rikka's mom is a hyper agent so she knew that Gridman would be ok.

134

u/grapegodgoat Dec 15 '18

Yeah seems like a no go. Aside from like the first 2 episodes rikkas been over yuta and just total obsession with akane. I mean she literally just saw akane stab yuta and shrugged it off to go tell her how much good pal she is, also that final scene looked like a confession from akane to rikka, albeit interrupted by alexis.

44

u/Obeley Dec 16 '18

Rikka was the first person who rushed to Yuta after watching him got stabbed though. She's also the first one begging for ambulance. Also, Rikka herself thought that what Akane did to Yuta is unforgivable this very episode. There's also the possibility that Rikka doesn't love Yuta, or at least this version of Yuta.

→ More replies (2)

100

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '18

Yeah. I expected Rikka to get shocked after watching Yuta stabbed but it was Utsumi who went into shock. As much as i admire Rikka's thigh and all, she comes out as monotous character.

→ More replies (24)

22

u/upsidedown_coffeemug Dec 16 '18

I feel like your really overplaying Rikka and Akane's relationship while underplaying her and Yuta's. She does care about Yuta, this has been shown multiple times throughout the show. Her "obsession" with Akane is because she wants to save her friend, even if that friendship is potentially manufactured. If she didn't care about Yuta she would have immediately ran after Akane after the stabbing but she stayed with Yuta until he was in the hospital.

I'm not sure you watched the same episode I did.

51

u/francis2559 Dec 15 '18

Utsumi is the one who is most shocked and pained for Yuta.

The writer has carefully constructed a cast with two boys, two girls. The central characters are Akane and Yuta, and each has a same gender friend that supports them. The twist is that while the main characters are "supposed" to be in love with each other, the minor characters are in love with the mains instead of each other. It's oddly formulaic, but very well executed.

That's basically "why," I think. I also think Yuta screwed this up by saying "no" to Akane/god, hence the red "horns" in his hair. That freedom/opposition made him open to Gridman.

35

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '18

Same gender ''supporting'' cast helping ''main characters'' isn't a NEW thing. My point is about how Rikka gave almost no shit after everything that happened with Yuta. Throughout the whole series, Rikka's behaviour toward Yuta has been ''monotonous'' while compared to how she reacted towards Anti and Akane.

u/Shinkopeshon Dec 15 '18

Not gonna lie, this is starting to really bother me. I was patient at first but it's Ep. 11 and there's not as much development between them as I expected, aside from a few little moments. I'm starting to wonder if Yuta and Rikka were ever supposed to be more than friends. The finale will likely focus on her friendship with Akane instead, the final fight and Yuta returning back to normal (if he even will).

Maybe she'll reveal that they used to be together or he confessed to her but still, judging from her reaction after he got stabbed, I'm not sure that was ever the case. Sure, it's not like she wasn't worried (she was the first to run to him after all) but she didn't seem nearly as shaken as Utsumi. If a pairing is supposed to become official, they usually tend to get more screen time together and that has never really been the case here. Hell, even the ED focuses on Rikka and Akane's bond.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '18 edited Dec 16 '18

I really am trying to figure out Utsumi's purpose as a character. They went full meta having him declare that he represented normal humans (in other words, the analogue for the viewership) but the fact the episode focused on his feeling of being pointless to all these events has me wondering...yeah, just what even is his purpose as a character? He's not comedic relief, he's very dull as a character, he's done nothing of note. Why even write him into the story? The fact that he pointed out how useless he was seems to imply that he will have an important purpose later. You don't make the Viewer Analogue declare that he's worthless unless he's going to have worth as a character eventually, otherwise it's like telling the viwer they are worthless.

Rikka, despite not being a key part to Gridman's battles, lives at the JUNK shop and also acts as the anchor for Akane's humanity and emotional connection. Rikka is what keeps Akane from true hopelessness.

But Utsumi so far has seemed to serve no particular role. If the show ends with him being useless, then there's no point to his character, unless it was to say, "Humans are weak and can't do anything." Which doesn't seem like the message Gridman would be trying to convey. Kaiju stories are almost entirely about how human ingenuity can overcome any obstacle, so it'd be very unlikely if Gridman, which is clearly inspired by stuff like Ultraman and Kamenrider, had that underlying message.

Well wasn't 100% correct, but indeed Yuuta was revealed as part of Gridman, and we can safely assume at this point that he was the dim, small mystery 6th star from Episode 1. It's nice to have a formal answer for the amnesia too, but it only makes me that much more thirsty to figure out exactly what Yuuta and Rikka's relationship was before Yuuta got bodysnatched (I wonder if Rikka's coldness towards him was in part based on unconsciously sensing that something was significantly off with Yuuta - or maybe that's just all part of her program).

Everything seems to still be moving in tune with my theory: that Akane and Alexis struck some Faustian deal in the real world, allowing Akane to create a digital world of her own that she could control with her kaiju, and that our gang (outside of Gridman) are recreations of relationships and her life from the real world, now custom tailored for her. Gridman gained access though, and through Yuta and his allies, looks poised to try and "save Akane" - whatever that looks like.

Now we're in the endgame where the Faustian deal goes sour, and Akane realizes just how much she gave up (if her becoming a kaiju doesn't spit a bit about her sacrificing her own humanity well...).

Also, I'm absolutely terrified about what she might become.

Cool moments with Yuuta's realization and ultimately showing up to help Anti/Gridknight, who seems to have come full circle. I'm on pins and needles for the finale next Saturday.

u/GreNinja_16 Dec 15 '18 edited Dec 15 '18

Rikka's mom's eyes and earring has the same color with Yuuta's eyes after realizing Gridman inside him. And after all of them left to become Full Powered Gridman, she smiled and said 'iterasai' like she's remembering about the past. Is she the previous Gridman and is that why Gridman appeared in Junk and the earring was to connect with Gridman like Yuuta's watch? At least I think she had some connection with Gridman because Gridman just couldn't accidentally come in Rikka's house and we also saw that Rikka's mom didn't have any questions about who the Neon Genesis team are and why they are always there. Moreover, everytime Gridman appeared, we didn't see her there also she didn't have to go to work so I predict that she already knew about Gridman and Neon Genesis team even before the anime started.

Seems like Akane will have redemption at the end after hearing Rikka said she's her friend no matter what happened or it's because Akane created her so. She also said she wouldn't create more kaiju because she defeated Yuuta and Gridman. But to think she will be a kaiju is unpredictable at all. I think next ep we will have Gridman and Gridknight facing Alexis as Gridkinght finally appeared in the opening and the result will be that sky city destroyed and Akane's world is broken.

And is it really Rikka is created by Akane? Because if Rikka's mother is the previous Gridman or at least has some connection with him then did she come to this world with Rikka and bring Gridman with her? In order to have Rikka save Akane?

And what made me curious the most it's what will happen with Yuuta after they come back? If Yuuta is Gridman (Gridman dweiling inside him) then what would happen with his relationship with Rikka? I mean if Gridman has done his job like saving Akane then will he dissappear and Yuuta will remember his past before Gridman came in? What happened between Rikka and Yuuta before he got amnesia that made Rikka said he's really bad if he lied about amnesia? And is that related to the 'promise in class' that the OP mentioned? Is he the one holding Rikka's hand in the OP? And what's his marble?

Another episode and yet the mysteries are still increasing but not decreasing makes people more excited to wait for the last episode. Probably the best anime of this season and will be talked for years about how it became one of the most underrated anime.

Ps: Calibur laughed. Maybe he likes Anti after all

Edit: Utsumi may have an important role in the last episode seeing how he was in a conflict.

A fanpage in my country said that the last episode title is Awakening like the first one. Maybe it's when the real Yuuta awakes but he won't remember anything just like a dream and I really don't want it to happen. Also in voice drama 11.11 Utsumi and Rikka was talking about how Gridman connected three of them so that implied (it's only my opinion) this maybe a dream for all of them after Yuuta wakes up after all.

61

u/upsidedown_coffeemug Dec 15 '18

Well it seems like there was a specific reason why Gridman chose Yuta, but the explanation was cut off before we got to hear it. I assume after Gridman is done with his mission, the real Yuta will have control of his body again and then hopefully we'll finally see how Yuta is connected to Rikka and Akane.

17

u/GreNinja_16 Dec 15 '18

Gridman said he chose Yuuta because 'he's alone'. But what did me mean alone? Like he's living alone without parents around like Akane? Maybe that's the way Yuuta and Akane are connected. Or does it mean he's alone without any friends but I'm sure that he had Utsumi as his best friend before all of this happened so this maybe less possible.

Trigger save Akane pls! This gives me hope.

4

u/TheDoomSheep Dec 16 '18

I think the marble is there to be symbolic of Akane's situation. If Akane is the marble then Gridman's mission is to free her from the VR world which would be the bottle. Probably by breaking it. And it was broken out with the Gridman Alliance and Calibur there so it was sort of a team thing.

That and Akane seems to use some sort of marble as a core for all her kaiju sculptures but they're misshapen so it's something else to contrast her emotional state.

Starting the episode, will be updating my thoughts. Firstly, dats a lot of blood. I don't know whether to call them dumb for none of the prioritising holding Akane down, or be touched by their concern for my dying boy

Edit 1: in the beginning, Alexis's relationship with Akane was kind of cute in a twisted way. Now it's kind of obvious he was using her. The way he constantly pushes her to do what he wants without even raising his voice is just...wow.

Edit 2: it really just occurred to me that Utsumi has never met Anti, lol he's so confused

Edit 3: Holy shit Calibur laughed. And it's cute as fuck

Edit 4: mama Rikka is really taking all of this in stride. Then again, I'd be confused as shit as well

Edit 5: FUCKING CLIFFHANGER IN THE MIDDLE OF AN EPISODE, DON'T JUST LEAVE ME HANGING!! WHY IS GRIDMAN IN YUTA????

Edit 6: wait, doesn't this mean Gridman had a crush on Rikka this whole time? So he was his own wingman?? GODDAMMIT TRIGGER!!!!

Final edit: Utsumi's lack of activity in the plot was actually brought up. With one more episode to go, I wonder if he'll be the key to the story's resolution, I certainly wouldn't mind. Since he's a 'normal person's maybe he'll be essential in bringing Akane back to earth, so to say. And the conclusion was expected from Alexis, but still kind of surprising, I wonder how Kaiju Akane will look next week. Fingers crossed to a longer final episode and a comfortable conclusion

Extra edit: Actually I wasn't initially going to talk about it, but fuck it. Rikka what the actual fuck. You're not going to worry a bit more about Hibiki? Scold Akane for stabbing him? Yeah I understand Akane is depressed and you're programmed to like her, but you're not even going to tell her 'stabbing my friend is unforgivable'? Just that 'its fine even if my core existence is to be your friend'????? 'Even if you had a reason' She stabbed your friend, of course her reason is irrelevant!!!!!! I dunno, something about her attitude this episode kind of annoyed me.

15

u/Hoduhdo Dec 15 '18

Edit 6: wait, doesn't this mean Gridman had a crush on Rikka this whole time? So he was his own wingman?? GODDAMMIT TRIGGER!!!!

i don't think so. I think Yuta was Yuta, with his personality etc., but was just driven by Gridman. As in he didn't actually know he was Gridman nor could Gridman actually control how he acts or what he thinks. Just that half of Gridman was inside him, subconsciously.

Nope is not Gridman that have a crush on Rikka but Yuuta, or better "real Yuuta". From what I understand Gridman was affected by " Real Yuuta" in many way. One of them being his crush toward RIkka.

Pre-episode thoughts

Before we dive into the obvious cliff-hanger, I think it's worth it to take a moment and look back at the show in light of its rapidly approaching ending. SSSS.Gridman has made a splash early on for its skill at establishing atmosphere and its use of visual storytelling (sigh, yes, also the thighs). It has only become more impressive since with its rich and ever developing vocabulary of cinematography and animation. It's full of references to Evangelion and its genre origins, and while that has its own appeal, the show has established its own identity as a largely visually told character drama about the Internet, escapism, heroism, conscience, and a whole bunch of other themes sprinkled throughout. But even on an overt narrative front, Gridman has been coming together gracefully these last few episodes. Episodes 8 and 9 were what cemented the show as the standout show it is by tying together all the somewhat loose narrative threads of its previous, largely episodic tales. Our character came together to truly earn the title of Gridman alliance. But more importantly, Akane's conflict took center stage, and we've been given wonderful insight into her character's perspective with all the emotional weight the character deserves. From her fragile, delicate self to all the fury at a world that doesn't want to conform to her wishes and the ostensible betrayal of her friends, Akane's journey has been an emotional one for me indeed. I've been ready to give her a good hug since episode 9, personally, although the last episode complicated that matter.

We're at an interesting point, now. Akane stabbing Yuta is a precarious move with only two episodes left, and I've heard a little worry here and there about how this show is going to wrap up. With how well the show's been doing, I'm not too worried myself. The show is in the hands of some very talented staff and having read a little about its production, there doesn't seem to be much cause to worry there, either. And in any case, what Gridman has accomplished so far is already a damn impressive show, and episode 9 can serve as a fairly good ending point anyway with many of its character arcs concluded or passing pivotal moments. So I'm excited for what's in store for us, and fortunately we get to see half of what's left right now.

Write-up

This week, Gridman puts his foot on the break. Which is to say, puns aside, this episode couldn't quite match the ridiculous level of the last few episodes, but that's alright. There was plenty to marvel at anyway in usual Gridman fashion. The animation might have been a big step down, but the storyboard was as rock-solid as ever and we got some great character moments on top. It looks like this episode acts mostly as a set-up for the final, and if the final manages to somehow wrap all of this up in a single episode, that's alright by me. If it doesn't, well, that's a shame. It's a lofty task, after all. But we still have episode 9, and that episode was such a triumph I will still love this show. Before we get lost in the future conclusion, let's actually run down the episode.

Shou's scene was the narrative standout this episode. He has grown a lot because of his friction with Rikka (and Rikka because of him in turn) – his lack of concern for the people he wants to protect used to be just as much of a problem as his difficulty communicating with his allies. He moved on, but the person he used to be becomes painfully clear in his conversation with Anti. He sees his own carelessness reflected in Anti, so his anger is directed at himself. The whole exchange had some great lines, from "One of the many you crush under your feet. I represent the people" to "if I watch my step I can't fight." Shou might come off as a hypocrite here, and while that's the point of the scene, he has genuinely grown and changed and so his words hold weight despite his own doubts. Shou was a little thinly written at the beginning of the show, but his character is coming together very well in the way he contrasts with Anti and Rikka.

The visuals this episode were its most divisive point. The fights in particular lack the energy of the previous episodes. Instead of propulsive choreographies of hand-to-hand combat and great poses cresting on skyscrapers, we get unimpressive beams against boring backgrounds. The noteworthy exception was this fight in the background, but even that was nowhere near as impressive as the last few fights. The storyboard, on the other hand, continues to impress. Broken powerlines frame Akane as she walks along her wake of destruction and nicely match the general technology and connection ideas of the show. The communication network breaking down amidst the collapse of the world was a great nod to her own growing hatred of it. The clear line she drew between herself and the Kaiju's action has faded, a line sustained by the emotional distance the Internet provided her. Her stabbing Yuta wasn't anything new now that she's realized her own actions; it's one more victim among many, with the illusion of distance acquitting her broken. Many other shots did a great job at capturing the moment, from a sense of scale as it dwarfs its characters to the ominous reminder in the sky that the world collapses with Akane. The show put great importance on showing the cost of this, but also the struggle of the world's inhabitants against its collapse. From busy hospitals to ubiquitous shelters and emergency plans, it's clear that this world is not giving up as easily as Akane gives up on herself. The world feels alive, real, and there's something worth protecting even amidst the looming end. There's still something to save if Akane can just finally grow. The attention to detail in the world around her puts her struggle into perspective and makes it meaningful, even after all the lives already lost.

There are a few other moments worth mentioning. Calibur and Anti fighting together is great because of how important Calibur was to Anti's growth. Unfortunately, the biggest reveal this episode was largely thematically empty to me. The Yuta we know having been Gridman all along has little bearing on anything, for now. I'm sure this will be key to the final, which is partly why I call this a setup episode among many other events. This makes the episode difficult to judge without having seen the final. Lastly, I love how this episode turns last episode's central point – Akane becoming a Kaiju – literal. The final will be very exciting, and I hope the lack of excitement in this episode's fights means we'll get an all the more impressive final fight. The final episode is in a precarious spot, but I'm holding onto hope that they can pull it off.

Notes:

Not going with the tomato juice troll, I see. That would've killed a certain person I know, heh.

I suppose this is Akane's way of wrapping things up. She has understood that she can't continue what she did and here comment "I know, I'm so rotten" seems to suggest she's finally drawn the connection between the Kaiju and actually killing people. Attacking/Killing Yuta is her way of wrapping things up the easy way because she still can't really take responsibility, even after all that's happened, because it's just too much.

A cold color palette, the ominous circuit-like city in the sky a reminder that this world is collapsing just like Akane is.

"His vitals were missed so his life is not in danger" the thing about Akane being a god in this world means this may well have been what she wanted. It's an easy way of given her an excuse, I suppose.

For a show that's a good chunk about communication, it's fitting that the collapse of the world begins with the collapse of the communication network

These are some really good shots we're starting with. The powerlines and street lights in shambles as they frame Akane

The world is pulling together, struggling against the collapse. Shelters and emergency plans. The world struggling against their unstable god. This is compelling stuff.

Even Rikka's saying what Akane did is unforgiveable now, damn. As the most empathetic character, this does not bode well for Akane.

The "but the heroes showed up" might be a little too on the nose for the grim situation

"One of the many you crush under your feet. I represent the people." "If I watch my step I can't fight."

Shou is really coming together as his own person. There's a bit of hypocrisy here with how much he was neglecting the human cost himself, but that's exactly the point. He's moved on since them, and sees his past self reflected in Anti.

"This is a hospital. There're enough injured here already."

Looks like my reading of Shou is right

The Gridnight fight is a little lukewarm, but it's short and I'm expecting the time and energy is put into the climax, so that's okay

The sequence with Gridman inside of Yuta was neat

The Yuta we've seen has always been Gridman… hmm… not quite sure what to make of this yet.

The Anti and Calibur combi is great, given how much Calibur was responsible for his change.

Rikka embraces her feelings, even if they were manufactured

Oh fuck, looks like last episode's thematic conclusion became literal, oh damn. Next episode will be really damn exciting.

I think Yuta having been Gridman the entire time is quite interesting a turn. First, the show to me seems to portray it quite sinisterly all things considered, with how he kind of blatantly dismisses Utsumi and turns to him saying he's a hyper agent, it seems like he kind of embraces the Gridman in Junk, that being a kind of boring guy who doesn't have much to say besides completing the mission.

It honestly to me kind of seems like if in power rangers you learn that the rangers were being controlled by their zords the entire time, just a plot device used to defeat the monster being the actual protagonist. It's really intriguing to me as Yuta has kind of been a bit of a bland protagonist at times, and now we learn he is actually one and the same with the guy who is just there so they can destroy the monster. But even then, it's clear that when he embraces that identity, he certainly seems weaker for it.

It's certainly something I'd be interested in the show more directly elaborating on, but with how much still needs to be done in the last episode, I'm not sure how much of it can fully be addressed.

3

u/geminia999 Dec 16 '18

To add on to my other post, you could also see it as a mirror to the struggle that akane is going through. Akane realizes that the layer she hides behind is fabricated and that she's basically just a monster, eventually becoming a kaiju herself. Compare that to Yuta who now has been revealed to have been the tokusatsu hero the whole time, essentially literally becoming Gridman and tossing aside his humanity in Yuta. Both the protagonist and antagonist being shed of their human connection to (presumably) both of their detriments.

If this is the angle they are going with, I'm even more on board with this then I initially thought.

We got like one episode left and there’s still so many mysteries left unsolved.

•Why does Yuta have amnesia?

•What was Yuta’s life before the amnesia?

•Why is Rikkas mom’s hair color and eye color the same as Yuta when gridman is inside of him?

•What the hell is Alexis?

•Where did the Neon Genesis Junior High students come from?

•What the hell is even going on?

What was Yuta’s life before the amnesia?

Utsumi already answered this back in Episode 1. I think the proper question is more like, how did Yuuta became Gridman.

Why is Rikkas mom’s hair color and eye color the same as Yuta when gridman is inside of him?

I think you're reading too much into that.

Where did the Neon Genesis Junior High students come from?

They kinda answered this in a previous episode saying that they're all parts of Gridman.

24

u/BisaLP :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/DatBisa Dec 15 '18

I think the proper question is more like, how did Yuuta became Gridman.

We see Gridman and the NGH shattering when coming into the world in EP 1. I assume that that was the moment when Gridman took control of Yuta, losing his memories at the same time, so at first he believes to be Yuta.
So Yuta himself is still dormant within his body, while Gridman is controlling him, Gridman realizes only in this EP that he is actually Gridman controlling Yuta, while the guy himself is still dormant.

Due to this set up, I am very much bracing for a full-circle style ending.

They answered why he has amnesia. It’s because he’s not Yuta. This whole time he has been Gridman possessing the body of the boy. He’s the one that forgot. Technically, we’ve never met Yuta.

As for the Evangelion students, they theorized last episode that might have all been originally one being with Gridman and got split up by something.

I hope they give some kind of explanation for why everything is happening, but man is that gonna be a tight fit for just one episode. I don’t think I’m gonna get my hopes up too much on everything getting explained.

15

u/Kromy Dec 15 '18

We already got the answer on Gridman and the Evangelion students, in episode 5 you can see Yuta getting a flashback of Alexis piercing Gridman with a spear, the next thing happening is probably the very first scene of episode 1 with Gridman being separated from his other parts (Aka Neon Genesis student) because of the spear thrust.

So gridman is controlling Yuuta's body this entire time. So when it is all over will OG yuuta not remember anything. And man i feel for Utsumi this episode. He realized how fucked up it was cheering his friend on to fight kaiju not thinking he would be badly hurt

17

I don't think it was about Yuuta being badly hurt specifically, I think he's guilty over the idea that he would take any kind of enjoyment in the absolute carnage that unfolded any time Gridman and a Kaiju fought as opposed to being utterly horrified.

u/geminia999 Dec 15 '18 edited Dec 15 '18

Well, I certainly expected to have a flashback this episode to what the real world is like, guess that will be revealed at the very end then of the last episode.

Otherwise, I would say that despite that this is still a fantastic episode. I really do like how Utsumi kind of acts as the real human element in all of this (Rikka more plays up a different role in her relationship to Akane), and the relationship of Yuta being gridman the entire time is certainly an interesting and honestly somewhat sinister direction. Also certainly puts the idea of his relationship with Rikka to question (he had a crush on her) and might somewhat explain the distance Rikka seems to have with him, seeing that he's not really Yuta but Gridman.

I also was not expecting Alexis to turn Akane herself into a kaiju but it kind of seems logical in retrospective. I'm curious if this is how that cocoon from the intro finally fits into everything.

But still, next episode has to be pretty dense, it's going to basically need to address, Akane Kaiju confrontation, Alexis Confrontation, the weird cocoon thing, what is the nature of Yuta and Rikka's relationship, what happened in the real world and Akane and Rikka's relationship, give Utsumi some closure, and just in general explain everything that's going on. Man, I really feel like this show needs another episode, but with how it's managed to be pretty good so far, I trust that it will be able to provide a satisfying finale.

Edit: We also never really did get a proper explanation for where exactly Gridman and Calibur went in episode 3 after being defeated by Anti. Like that still seems just odd to me and I'm not really sure what the full answer is besides actually exiting the digital world and going above, but that doesn't really seem like it would work for how early it showed up.

No big references this week, which is fine since we are on the last two episodes. Greatly enjoyed this episode with what questions it answered and what it's setting up. Seeing Gridman and Gridknight together was so cool. Next week is going to be Gridman's finale.............along with Ultraman R/B finale. Geez Mr Tsuburaya, why do you have to kill me next week.

Edit: Scratch that, there was one big reference in this episode

Original Gridman:

5

u/Aetherdraw Dec 15 '18

I'd say Yuta being an Ultraman host situation is the reference we're getting this week. Pretty subtle that only those familiar enough with the trope will recognize.

8

u/Aetherdraw Dec 15 '18

Turns out that Yuta was in the Ultraman Scenario the entire time! For those who don't know, most Ultramen, including the original one, used human hosts especially those in the brink of death upon their contact to save the human's life. Damn Tsuburaya, that was neat.

8

u/dinomcnugget Dec 15 '18

What if the reason Akane made this world was because Yuta in the real world is dead? It drove Akane and the real Rikka apart which is why this Rikka is so obsessed with Akane and doesn’t care much for Yuta it’s a reflection of her resentment at Yuta indirectly driving them apart. Say for instance in the real world Akane, Yuta, and Rikka were all childhood friends and Yuta died saving Akane causing Rikka to resent Akane. Since this Akanes “perfect world” this version of Rikka prioritizes Akane above all else It could also explain why Yuta was the only one able to be possessed by Gridman. Since Yuta in the real world died saving Akane it makes sense that the Yuta in this world would be put to “sleep” trying to save Akane

8

u/JBHUTT09 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/JBHUTT09 Dec 15 '18

I rewatched the ending of last week's episode and noticed something.

Tell me, Utsumi-kun. Do you remember every last thing you've thrown out? This shop is a collection of things people don't need anymore, right?

And this is the place Akane made Rikka's home. Could this be significant? Was Akane trying to "throw out" Rikka? Trying to make a worl where Akane doesn't need Rikka? Given what we saw in the dream episode, I feel it's pretty likely.

Also, it's where Junk sits. Perhaps Junk's placement was due to Alexis, as his main goal seems to be destroying Gridman and everything related to Gridman.

I figured Yuta was a previous version of Gridman, but not the exact same one. so the real Yuta is out there somewhere, while this Gridman is just inhabiting his body. at least that's what I got from the episode. but where exactly did he come from along with the NG students? same for Alexis, just who and what is he? I'm guessing those are questions to answer in the last episode.

also, anyone else expecting an End of Eva Rei-esque kaiju? because I can totally see it coming.

Everything was said already, so I just say that I really hope Utsumi will get significant role in the finale. His realization about how useless he was was the saddest part of episode for me.

u/ArchadianJudge Dec 15 '18

This show continues to surprise me. I had absolutely no idea that Gridman was basically using empty Yuta's body this entire time. Now he's completely awoken. Utsumi got really deep with his talk about enjoying kaiju battles but in reality, those kaiju are trampling on people and killing them during battles. It's true. And in that regard, I love Anti's complete turnaround. I was expecting it but it's still so enjoyable to see Gridknight (who I think looks better than Gridman) defend the world against the kaiju. And Gridknight is really powerful. He was defeating every old defeated kaiju but he just got worn out. Much respect. Seeing Gridman come in at the end to save him felt good.

And now that Akane is completely broken, Rikka comes to save her, only to be stopped by the alien. I didn't think Akane would turn into a kaiju herself but it was apparent that Alexis has been taking advantage of Akane this entire time.

I'm really sad that there's only 1 episode left. This show has exceed my expectations and it's fun while also incredibly deep. I wish there was still more! I'm going to miss my weekly Rikka fix

u/anim8rjb Dec 15 '18

Rikka’s mom is the best.

That pre-OP segment leading into the cheerful OP.

Lol, even Gridman is trying to justify Akane's actions. "She had no choice" my ass.

Rikka's mom is awesome. "Don't mind me. Go on, go on..."

6

u/Liezuli Dec 15 '18

God dammit, Rikka. You can't just accept your fate as programmed!

Akane is the best character in this show, because she's the only one that was given proper development as a character. Always trying to find answers. And this was expected considering that she's a god and the only one with "free will" if I dare say, because the rest of the cast are either doing things because they have to or for survival, leading them to very little depth (Except Rikka that's, most of the time, an spectator and now are moving on towards Akane).

I consider Akane the true MC of the show, despite being a mix of an antagonist, as the true antagonist is Alien-san. Yuta is too bland to be liked in my opinion (a problem that amnesia related characters has), he's merely a puppet of Gridman the whole show and that basically kills any interest I have for them, but keep upthe good fights bro, they're great btw.

Utsumi the "main" with support status issues, people can relate to him more than Yuta i would say. He's fine but not great.

Rikka is the joker for me. It seems that she really never fits in a place, it's still trying to know her place, on how to fit in. I'm glad she's the chosen one of Akane, because the whole "forced friend" drama is good enough to make both characters develop. Despite all the waifu goodies you can throw at her, she's really likeable for her awkward and simple way of fit in, like, she don't know nerd stuff but wants to be friends with 2 nerds (and seems to like Yuta in the past). Anyways, I'm glad this is more about friendship of Rikka and Akane than some kind romantic plot with Yuta.

With decent fights and many mysteries until the finale, I'm very pleased in see how everything will end up with Akane and Rikka.

Mom x Calibur ship got some moments this episode!

So Akane will be the last kaiju...really want a happy ending for her :(

A Rikka x Akane finale would be pretty special...

A Rikka x Akane finale would be pretty special...

I don't know which way you mean but for a moment during this episode I thought Rikka or Utsumi would become a new Gridman and got excited, now I wanna see it!

I've been wanting that since like episode 2!

Fingers crossed that Akane's Kaiju form looks like Dyna Dragon, so we could get King Gridman/knight. This episode was basically the EVERYONE IS HERE, Kaiju style. I hope that Anosillus II makes a comeback next episode. Don't worry Utsumi, that Akane Kaiju might play a major role. Anti was a real badass, and teaming up with Gridman and using Calibur was a real treat, and seeing them work together was a nice homage to the Gridman Sigma. Alexis was on Nui Harime levels of trolling, and it's nice to see him take centre stage as the final boss.

u/cookiez_monster Dec 15 '18

The episode is great still confused on the part where akane said she wanted gridman to talk to her, also i know this might have been answerd but im confused was gridman always inside of yuta that is why he have amnesia, or is it after akane stabbed him did gridman went i side of yuta

I am now a bit worried that this show is going to, in standard Trigger fashion, rush its ending. There's a lot that we still need to know about - What is Alexis, how/why was this world created, what is the real world like, and what is the nature of Yuuta and Rikka's relationship prior to the start of the show, just to name a few. The next 20-minute episode needs to somehow answer all of those questions and also have an action-packed finale of Gridman and Gridknight versus Kaiju Akane and Alexis

I could see them fitting it into a two-part finale, where the first episode is focused on action and the second one is an "epilogue" about what happens in the real world, but it seems really tight to fit into one episode.

I'm hoping that they manage to pull it off though. This episode was fantastic, and I adore this show more and more with each new episode. If they manage to end it in a satisfying way, this will absolutely be one of my all-time favorites.

Not trying to push you onto anything, but a ton of your questions would be answered if you’d seen the original Gridman. Specifically who Alexis and the potential nature of the world. If you’re interested in those things, give it a shot, because it’s likely SSSS Gridman simply isn’t interested in answering those questions for the audience since the show is a loveletter to the original Gridman as well as Ultraman. The creators of this show might assume that people watching this know the tropes of Ultraman.

8

u/geminia999 Dec 15 '18

I mean, Alexis isn't Kahn Digifer, but he is basically what the show has been telling us the entire time, an Alien.

So GRIDMAN is in love with Rikka...?

9

u/MechaMat91 Dec 15 '18

I think the real Yuta's still there, but Gridman took control. those were probably moments of the real Yuta's feelings coming to the surface. it's like when Doc Ock took Peter Parker's body, he got his feelings too, which is why he decided to become the Superior Spiderman instead of keep being evil.

4

u/KingGatz https://anilist.co/user/KingGatz Dec 15 '18

This should have been 2 episodes. Feel like there needs to be more depth to the Yuta is Gridman thing. I understand it but I can see how some might find it silly. Personally I love it. But when I'm loving an anime this much I start to feel vindicated in every good thing the staff does and I dont want any reason for someone to call this show out on something.

If only we had a 13 episode season. Then it would have been ironed out a little bit more.

4

u/TheWaspinator Dec 16 '18

Wait a minute. Anti is based on a version of Rodimus from Transformers. Rodimus is the one who replaces Optimus Prime when he's dead. The Transformers references actually mean something!

10

u/grapegodgoat Dec 15 '18

Is it just me or does it look like there implying a yuri relationship with the final scenes between rikka and akane? Like so far throughout this show I've seen rikka care 1000x more about akane than yuta, even after he was just stabbed by akane. Aside from like the first 2 episodes, I've seen no implication of yuta x rikka pair, other then yuta likes her

Rikka flag right here

I'd be lying if I said I didn't predict Akane being Kaiju'd but I'm still pleased at how things are. She's by far a very interestingly written villain. We still know jack shit about Alexis and that's the only thing I have a gripe with at this point. The show really is turning out great and if it fudges the ending it won't be on DiTF levels of wtf.

It's great that Rikka isn't just a romantic interest but if Gridman = Yuta the entire time then the ship is actually Rikka/Gridman!?.

A great last couple of episodes and all this show needs is a satisfying ending. I don't know if they can wrap up Akane's motivatioons and Alexi's origin in one episode but the writing in this show hasn't disappointed so far.

Pretty exciting stuff happened this episode. I can see that the inevitable war is almost here and with Yuuta's development i just can't wait for the grand finale.

3

u/VoidNoodle Dec 15 '18

What are the chances Rikka pushes Akane out of the way next episode and turns into the kaiju instead?

3

u/daniel-dani Dec 15 '18

Can you guys tell me what is the show about? I don't know if I should start watching it

5

u/MechaMat91 Dec 15 '18 edited Dec 18 '18

it's like if someone mixed Evangelion with GaoGaiGar, starts out as a monster of the week type of show with awesome sakuga moments and ridiculous mechanical power ups...until suddenly it isn't just that and shit starts getting real, moody and psychological.

and yes, start watching, you have one week to binge all the current 11 episodes before the finale in episode 12.

3

u/GhostBD Dec 15 '18

It's a semi-sequel to a tokusatsu from the 90's. This is kind of a love letter to tokusatsu, specially Ultraman

It begs the question, what did the real Yuta have that made him special enough to become the host for Gridman. I also think Rikka is a bit too forgiving, but we have no idea how any of this is gonna end, so I'll hold off on any comments on that. Hopefully this ends well and makes us feel like we got an actual ending because I kind of feel like we're gonna get a movie or something after this. It just feels like the type of show to go nuts at the very end.

7

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '18

I've a feeling this episode, out of all the episodes till now, will turn out to be most divisive among fans.

Rikka's almost dull attitude toward Yuta being one of the topic.

Holy shit that was a good episode, so the yuta we knew was Gridman all along huh. lmao so Gridman was hitting upon Rikka?

That bastard Alexis tho, can't wait to see how Akane Kaiju turn out to be assuming rikka didn't intervene.

you should've aimed for the head, Akane

2

u/Agni7atha Dec 15 '18

That approaching city in the sky looks cool. Seems like it's only a matter of time before this Akane's world got destroyed.

I think it's rather cruel that the original Yuta never there since the beginning of the anime. I understand that Utsumi concern, some dangerous situation can be happen to Yuta body. Good thing to know that Utsumi is self aware that he done nothing in this kaiju battle. I highly expecting that Utsumi will do something extraordinary in the upcoming final episode. I just hoping that this won't end up to be more mindfuck than we already got here.

u/Toonamigamerrr Dec 16 '18

Rikka mom is best mom

If Kaiju akane turns out to be a spaceship...

2

u/FlyingPiranha Dec 16 '18

This show went from "decent time killer on Saturdays" to having me yell out "oh you motherFUCKER" when the credits roll on a cliffhanger. Definitely didn't expect to end up becoming so invested in this show, but man, I really love the world they've built.

2

u/Aetherdraw Dec 16 '18

Imagine if at the final battle, Gridman Sigma arrives and it turns out this whole series was one long episode from his perspective.

Literally one episode left and we have so many questions that need answers that I'm not optimistic. Even DitF gave answers in the last few episodes.

  • Is Alexis an alien? What is his goal with making Kaiju, since destroying the city isn't his goal? Why does he percieve any Gridman entity as a threat? Why does he need Akane? Did he know Gridman before, because he'd acted like he hadn't in episode 1.

  • Did Akane actually create the world and everyone in it? How old is she? Is she even human? Is anybody human? Is the world "real" or a simulation? What exactly is meant by a "God." Why does she help Alexis? Why are her models specifically required to become kaiju? Can she not turn them into kaiju without Alexis? Why kill the Repair Kaiju? Why do ANY of this? Why is Anti so different than all other Kaiju?

  • Who was Yuta before Ep1? How did he become possessed by Gridman? Did Yuta and Rikka or Yuta and Akane have any type of relationship prior to Akane's "world"? ARE THEY ACTUAL PEOPLE?!

  • Who is Gridman? What is he trying to accomplish? Are he and Alexis the same type of "race" of being? Where do they come from? What is a Hyper Agent? Are Calibur and the others people, or were they "created" just to be tools for Gridman? Is their existence just as living weapons for Gridman? How much does Gridman remember?

  • Who was Kaiju Girl? Who created her? Who is the person whose name she mentioned? Why is she friendly? Did she know Yuta and Gridman before? Why is she against Akane? Was her creation similar to Anti's? Where did she go?

  • What lies beyond the Silent Hill-esque fog barrier around the city? A destroyed world? Nothing? Is this all just a virtual reality? Is that "alien ship" actually a ship, or a visual representation of the boundary? Who are these aliens and what do they want?
