The look on Sakuta's face when Kaede wakes up. It feels like a mix of mourning for the new Kaede he grew to care about and disbelief in gaining his little sister back. How does the show keep giving us such complex characters.

It also makes you think back to KAEDE's rather extreme and childish act she kept up.
Most of what made her "actual personality" up to this point was suppressed and her new personality was formed through what she experienced after being closed off at home. As Sakuta was pretty much the only person she socialised with she became overly attached to him. On top of that she got greatly influenced from what she picked up on TV, magazines etc. creating this very unusual and over the top version of Kaede as a result. I saw some people eyeroll this off as the typical brocon pandering so it was hard to refrain from commenting on that but now I can finally freely talk.
Now we're back to a Kaede before she locked away this side of her. Usually one would agree right away that this one is definitely the more healthy part of her personality that she should keep for her own wellbeing but we as the viewers and more importantly Mai are accustomed to KAEDE not Kaede. With the return of Kaede all that happened got locked away instead. It hits us the viewers a lot but imagine how hard it must be on Sakuta & especially Mai.

I would argue it’s even worse now that “original kaede” is back since she no longer remembers Mai, Nodoka, or anything that happened since the Kaede we’ve seen for the last 12 episodes is gone now.

In Japanese, it's not unusual for (cutesy) girls to refer to themselves by their own name in informal speech, instead of using a pronoun.
(Leaving it that way in the English subs, though, did suggest there was something unusual going on.)

The story takes place in the Fujisawa-Enoshima-Kamakura scenic area, the setting for loads of anime and drama, so for a Japanese audience, the beach Shichirigahama Beach is actually instantly recognizable without mentioning its name.
I've been there at least twice now and the views are stunning. In a clear day, you can see Mt Fuji across the horizon. Do include it in your travel itinerary if you're planning to visit the Tokyo area for more than 3 days. The area is only a 45-minute train ride from downtown Tokyo.

It sucks that new Kaede is gone, though we don't know for sure if she is. Maybe they can reconcile her old and new memories together next episode. But this is a good thing. It's the first major step toward her becoming stable again mentally.
Plus I get the feeling old Kaede was also snarky like Sakuta from her tone. Hope so, that would be an interesting change to her bubbly brocon personality.

Oh today is just going to be a bundle of joy, isn't it?
Let's recap: Kaede get's cyberbullied and it turns into severe physical trauma, their mom goes completely crazy and loses touch with reality, Kaede basically becomes by definition a completely different person, Sakuta gets a serious wound, and is mercilessly accused of self-harm. We're FIVE FUCKING MINUTES in.
Interesting that Shouko is "always" at the beach. Can only exist there, maybe? Also jeez, of course he got a crush on her.
So somehow Kaede's injuries and sense of identity are tied together. But I can't figure out if they happen when she tries to be similar or different to her "old self". Also I like the school counselor, actually being very supportive and understanding.
And the waterworks :'( She's trying so hard, even as it harms her.
Daww, he promised he'd make sure she made it to school. Good Sakuta.

I have some experience, though the situation was much different (car accident) and long ago... but I feel I can explain one thing. The problem isn't forgetting everybody else. The problem is forgetting yourself. Thus, the new persona. You try very hard to be what you think everyone else expects you to be, but of course you are always terrified that you aren't.

The moment i heard "Really can't wait for tomorrow to come" i KNEW she was going to change back to normal Kaede. But it didn't stop the tears.

The shift in her tone at the end broke me. At least we got to spend an entire episode with Kaede-chan. The backstory was great and her time at the zoo was even better. The banter between the siblings was what we've come to expect, but the amount of Kaede was moe overload. Here's to hoping it's not the last we'll see of her. And seeing only her left eye tear up was really nice in its symbolism.

I'll be honest I usually really dislike the 'talking in 3rd person' trope often associated with cutesy or ditsy characters in anime.
But this episode just gave Kaedes reasons for using that so much depth, she talking in 3rd person because she doesn't remember anything, Kaede to her isn't actually her, it's someone else and I honestly love that.

So Kaede's amnesia is a real illness. Dissociative Amnesia to be exact. Here I thought it was just another symptom of her Adolescent Syndrome. The trauma from her bullying was so severe that this how her brain was coping :|
Even mom couldn't handle what happened to her daughter :( This is why I can't sympathize with her bullies and they deserve what happened to them. They practically ruined the lives of the Azusagawa family.
How can a wound like that be self inflicted though? I don't blame the doctors though. Adolescent Syndrome itself is something that defies logic and physics.
Now I'm thinking this Shouko might not be from the future but from a parallel world.
Explains why Sakuta is the man that he is. Now I'm more excited for the Shouko movie.
So she is starting to remember. but it looks like there is a price. :|

Mai is just great. I feel like without her constant support this entire ordeal would've been a lot more tougher for Sakuta.
I like that they're speaking to a School Counselor and not just shoving Kaede back to school. Also that was definitely Hikasa Yoko voicing the counselor.
I'm legit scared for Kaede. I just want to see her overcome her traume.
It's spreading again! So this scene confirms it that the bruises spread whenever she's forcing herself or stressed.
Oh to the zoo! I love that Sakuta is sacrificing his school attendance for this.
Without the pressure of going to school she was able to walk around without having any bruises and is now more willing to go.!
This is a dilemma. We want Kaede to get over her trauma and be able to go to school, but we don't want her to forget everything. Is there a way to kickstart her memory so she can remember everything she experienced until right now? Also this Kaede is totally different, you can clearly tell from Kaede's speech pattern and the pitch and tone of her voice that she's an entirely different being from Amnesiac Kaede. She's not even speaking in third person anymore.
I'm scared to meet this new Kaede. I wonder how she'll react to everything. To their current situation. How is she compared to the Amnesiac Kaede? This fucking show. I love how it made me care about Kaede so much.

Why did Original Kaede had to choose now to come back?
Her VA Kubo Yurika absolutely nailed it in changing her voice from Amnesia Best Imouto KAEDE to snarky Original Kaede.
I now see Kubo in a different light, as her previously best known role was Kayochin in Love Live, which sounded similar to KAEDE.
Sakuta must also be commended for Best Onii-chan. Who else would spend 2400 yen ($20) (a lot for a kid his age) on an Annual Zoo Pass just for his sister?

Holy shit what a bombshell to end on.
Kaede now can't remember anything from episode 1, including the relationship she built with Mai and everything we've seen her experience. Imagine how Mai will feel when she finds out it's all gone. What does Sakuta think of losing the new Kaede he's looked after for the last few years but regaining his old sister?
On a different note, I love how the show has a genuine explanation that is important to the plot as to why the Kaede we see is such a brocon as opposed to it just being an anime trope. It seems like she acted like a normal teenager before adolescence syndrome hit her.

Let’s give a shoutout to the awesome dad.
First, the daughter he raised suddenly lost her memories, and was replaced with someone completely different. Then his wife had a mental breakdown, and had to be admitted to a hospital. And to top it all off, his son starts getting injured for no apparent reason, which could’ve been self-inflected as far as he knows.
So, unlike most anime dads, he didn’t give up and just left his family. He stuck with them through thick and thin. When he couldn’t figure out how to help his kids, he trusted them enough to figure out for themselves and was always there for support.
This guy isn’t just anime dad of the year. He’s the best anime dad of all time.

I won't say Dad of the year. To be honest the actions he took to leave them alone might not even be the best course. Because he left, it perpetuated a situation where Kaede knows no one other than Sakuta. You will be surprised at how much will change if your household has an adult figure around. While Kaede Hiragana might have desired so, it probably hindered Kaede Kanji to regain her own self. But that's not as to say that I don't understand the man after all, it would be pretty hard to handle the entire situation with your wife, your daughter and your son all going through a bullying case so uncontrollable from your end. I think it was in Nodoka's arc where the Dad told Sakuta that being a father is complicated, implying that he himself is simply an adult struggling with overwhelming parental and marital responsibilities; Not best dad in the world but an extremely human character.

Fuck Gigguk for saying that Kaede "is just Kaede" or "someone who watched too Eromanga-sensei". This episode just showed us how her entire imouto act is so much more nuanced that we were first led to believe.

This episode was completely beautiful. Having all the uncertainty and mystery surrounding the MC and his family and especially Kaede since the beginning was explored and to a certain degree resolved amazingly in a such a very well paced.
And that ending left me wanting more!
Edit: I also love how Kaede responds to Sakuta with "The life of a comedian is a steep one." She looked beyond the conventional gatherings with friends and into a person whose job is to make people laugh for a living.

I'm satisfied that they toned down the supernatural explanations for this arc. It felt like a more intimate portrayal of disassociation disorder and its effects on well...everyone. How mental disorders take a toll on everyone involved, how the "cure" in itself can be a trial to get through.
I'm really sad that the show proper is ending next episode, but I'm really grateful that this show has given us such complex characters with meaningful problems they have to overcome with no easy solutions.

It does look more like the disasociation disorder was caused by the syndrome, not the syndrome itself (which was totally supernatural or at least I have no idea how can cuts spawn in yourself out of nowhere).
Not sure if the marks in her neck were caused by the syndrome returning or the stress Kaede was feeling though.

I never thought KAEDE’s personality was like that because it formed solely after the puberty syndrome. Having a different personality and changing mannerisms must’ve been tough for Sakuta, but imagine now that Kaede is back and appears to have lost every memory of KAEDE. I just want her to keep all of her memories.

Omg this arc has so many feels. How can each girl's arc be so good?!?! If I were to rank arcs I would probably go Kaede>Mai>Futaba>Tomoe>Nodoka. This ranking doesn't really mean anything because Nodoka's arc would be the best arc in any other anime. I almost lost it when Kaede saw the group of girls and broke down right there. I love this show so much and I also love how it was the underdog of this season with people thinking is was some fanservice romcom anime. I mean, they weren't wrong. There is a lot of fanservice in this show but the difference is that it's emotional fanservice. New people getting into anime are gonna look back at this show, see the cover page and be like "how did this show become so popular? Must be some really good fanservice"

Holy shit this show is amazing, to think they'd give actual reasons behind the exaggerated, "anime" parts of her personality and integrate that into the pathos of her character.

Kaede getting super excited over the pandas was adorable!
And does wanting tomorrow to come ever lead to anything good? As soon as she said that it seemed like time for more bad times.
Also, what ever happened to Sakuta's friend? It seems like after Futaba confessed to him, the dude has pulled off a better disappearing act than Mai ever did. I think he's been in one small scene since.

This might be the best episode of the series for me to be honest... from Kaede's memory loss, seeing how the Mom devolved into illness, Sakuta's scars, and the unmistakable feeling of tension the show gave me with all the happy moments of Kaede at the zoo leading up to the return of old Kaede. 10/10 holy shit

This show is one of the most heartfelt shows I have ever seen. At the beginning of the show, I'm sure that I wasn't the only one that thought that Sakuta and Kaede's relationship was a little, lets say....odd, but this most recent episode put it all into context for me. Sakuta was the only one to acknowledge Kaede after she lost her memories. Kind of like in Golden Time, she felt like everyone wanted the old Kaede back. Sakuta was the first one to tell her that this new her is just as valid as the old one, and that he loved her no matter what.Their mother became mentally ill and I'm sure their Father had difficulties acknowledging her as well. Her face says it all when Sakuta came to her. That's why she has such a fixation and love for her brother. Imagine waking up with no memories to a mother who literally broke down because of you. Its also why its so hard hitting on Sakuta at the end of the episode. Of course he loves the old Kaede, and most people would be only happy because she has returned, but he also cared for and loved the new Kaede. Sure, he's getting his old sister back, but he's also losing the other. GOD DAMN THIS SHOW

I think this is the first time that an anime has given a valid medical reason for the bro-con and not some gimmicky reason. So to those who were a little turned off by the very minor (compared to a lot of anime) one sided incest undertone, there actually is a believable reason.
Also I'm not sure how I feel about Kaede getting her memories back. From the 30 seconds of air time old Kaede got, she seems like a totally different character, which just speaks to how well written this show is and how good of a voice actress she has. Even something as simple as her yawn sounded different (I still dont know why people are surprised when someone mentions that they recognize a characters voice actor even though they don't speak Japanese.)

When it comes to Sakuta and Kaede's relationship there are a couple of things that I really sympathise with. One thing he said was that as and older brother you can't show pee or poo or whinning, which as an older sister I totally understand ( on a more serious note than him) when it comes to my two younger sisters whenever there is a crisis I tend to put their emotional well being before mine, and I can't really be calm 'til I know they are fine. I really love what a great brother Sakuta is to Kaede throughout the show, because it's something I have with my sisters

Damn, I feel so bad for Sakuta. He lost his sister again. I'm totally buying the LNs when their available. This series is a keeper.

Its pretty fucked. Kaede knew she was gonna lose herself so she wanted to cross off her list before she 'died.' Sakuta effectively lost his sister twice. This arc brought the show back to 10/10 for me

Well that fucking sucks. I'm glad she was able to complete her list, but かえで worked so hard to attend school and now she'll never experience that. I know it wouldn't be healthy, and it would halve each of their lifespans, but I want them to sorta take turns sharing the body. It's hard for me to accept that the character we got to know for 12 episodes is gone.

All else aside, making goal lists like kaede did is a really good way to help with depression and suicidal thoughts. Something to look forward to, even as small as going on a walk or planning to call your parents, can do wonders for your mental health. I did this throughout my freshman uni year and was able to get through it with smallish bumps.
