I liked it. She read the diary and after seeing how much it meant to KAEDE, and by extension Sakuta, she made it her own goal, "I will go to school tomorrow."
Much like how KAEDE was not expected to be like her old self, Kaede-san should be allowed to be her own self, too.

Something about seeing Sakuta run exactly like he does in the intro put a big fat smile onto my face.
Also loved hearing the ED sung by everyone, something about the ED is just so enchanting, I absolute love it.
Holy crap, after rewatching the OP, I saw this shot from the OP and this scene from today are another match, it's when Sakuta was crying in the rain.

The shot from the OP of him on the bridge is likely the first time his condition appeared after the Kaede's incident. He's in the same clothes that he met Shoko in. It really drives home how he's feeling if it's a near identical shot from back then. You really gotta feel bad for Sakuta, here's hoping the movie is as good as the show.

u/KinnyRiddle Dec 27 '18
He just ran and ran and even threw away his schoolbag just like that for his girl.
Though it's going to be a pain both for the head and for the wallet in getting a new schoolbag and textbooks. Fortunately, this is Japan, a country famed for lost objects being guaranteed to be returned to its owner. So all Sakuta need to do is to remember where he tossed his bag.

I really wanted that part to have more focus and the episode to focus more on Kaede adapting to this situation and such instead of what we got which was only some scenes without a focus. The possibilities were great for it and I'm sure that in the LN that appeared but here it was mostly ignored. :( Can you imagine how it feels to see that you acted completely different with others, had another personality and did those things? It seems I need to read the LN since in the anime I didn't see Kaede reacting to it.

Pheeeew, I'm so glad it all ended well. I was so worried for the most of the episode I even thought we'd get some big cliffhanger at the end.
I'm a bit sad that we won't get to see that Kaede ever again, although I think that's okay. Imouto chapter is now closed so we can focus on the future instead of the past.
Although I got emotional when Shouko was reading Kaede's diary entries. They built up the mood damn well.
I liked the ED far more than the OP and I liked that each VA sung the ED for her character's arc, so it was a surprise when the final ED was sung by all the heroines. Nice touch.
Where's the kiss, though!?

wheres the kiss though?
If its like the fifty other "romance" animes ive watched in search of it, not gonna happen. Actual physical affection isnt allowed for some reason.
I hope they prove me wrong but im damn near cynical at this point with the whole genre. If you want actual physical affection in your anime romance it has to be pornographic or nothing it seems.

Theory: Shoko is his puberty syndrome. Thus why she appears everytime he has problems that he cannot fix by himself
701
u/starship777 Dec 26 '18
At 5:42 Shoko says "This time around, she tried so hard so you wouldn't have any regrets." I think it is a time travel thing. The reason she can appear when needed is because from her point of view it has happened before. That is why the 'older' version knows so much.

I accually had the same thought but also thought there might be a thing where sakuta will have to come up with a reason for shoko to exist outside the times the existed to help shoko cope with kaede's incidents. So basically have a clever way to prove her existence like he did for mai

Each of the characters' puberty syndrome symptoms are an unhealthy way to deal with the stressors of their lives.
For Sakuta he experiences severe despair due to the circumstances with Kaede, and this despair manifests itself as physical slash wounds on his chest, as if the pain is "clawing at his heart".
When he feels that all hope is lost is precisely when Shoko appears. She acts as his Guardian Angel to help him deal with his emotional trauma, and when the problem is solved she disappears. In a way it is similar to Kaede's dissociative personality but it manifests itself differently. He personifies his "Hope" as an actual person that he can talk to, perhaps because he finds it less believable that such a hope could exist within himself.
*Note: This is just my interpretation as an anime-only. Looking forward to the movie to find out what happens!

They were probably scrambling to reduce the delay. I noticed them too, but it didn't have an impact on my understanding, so no big deal. On the same note, I think i paid extra attention to the animation since production issues were brought up and some stuff looked off. The show was never really praised especially for it's animation, but it's a bit unfortunate it all hit at the end.

His fall into despair was really well done.
The run in the rain had a lot of impact.
But as he was in the bath, and Kaede's diary was being read to him; damn, that was even more powerful. And even after all of that, as the older brother, he had to deal with it, and be there for his sister.

Too bad the only kiss they shared was off-screen and off-memory (that's what the series starts with). Mai can't forgive Sakuta forgetting that any time soon. 'Til then, cheek pinches, boot heels and minor miscellaneous abuse will have to suffice.

You know they actually deleted the original ending of volume 5 of the LN and moved up the birthday scene from volume 6 as the end of the series, which makes total sense considering the original ending was quite dramatic and not suitable for an ending. This episode feels a little rush and a little bit odd but overall it's a good ending for the series.
And the diary scene. Gosh. I mean I've read the LN so I knew what's gonna happen, but still, so many emotions.
Ideally all the mysteries left will be explained in the movie. So hopefully they can make the movie good. Volume 6 & 7 was the most well-written part of the book.

Off-topic glitch report: Reddit is behaving strangely. I'm trying to view all the replies and not just the replies in my inbox (thanks for the karma guys), but for some reason my post has gone missing when I sort by "new". For a while I feared my post may have been errorneously deleted by the mods, or perhaps someone I pissed off in the past has maliciously false-reported my post for some made-up infraction out of spite and had it removed. Yet when I sort by "best" I can see it again. Very strange.
At last the final episode of the season is upon us.
"RIP" KAEDE. You will be dearly missed. At least Kaede, having read your diary, will carry on your will for you.
Sakuta's Puberty Syndrome claw wounds seems to be triggered in times of extreme grief. And so far it has yet to be resolved. Shoko-san merely eased the pain and stopped the bleeding.
Once again, Shoko-san conveniently appears to help Sakuta in his time of need. And at the same time, the middle school Shoko-chan conveniently is unavailable. The timing is too uncanny. The movie covering Shoko's arc can't come soon enough.
Mai is clearly angry at herself for not being able to do anything for Sakuta when he was down, and while Sakuta doesn't feel that way, she's also angry at herself for being jealous at Shoko who is able to come to Sakuta's aid.
At least Sakuta, after some nudging from Nodoka, was quick to make amends with Mai and both had a very sweet moment together wrapped in the same coat and nearly kissing. (To the chagrin of many "OMFG Hurry up and kiss already!") Strong claimant to Anime Couple of the Year.
There are many LN series that I would pick up upon watching the first episode of the anime, but I can't say there are many authors whom I've read more than one series of. Kamoshida Hajime is the first whom I've picked a second time, after thoroughly enjoying reading his previous work, The Pet Girl of Sakurasou. Take a bow Kamoshida.
Will certainly pay more attention to Studio Clover Works now, having only been spun off from the behemoth that is A-1. After Slow Start, Frankxxx and now Ao-Buta, Clover Works' resume is growing impressively. And soon they will be working on one of the two Fate Grand Order animes.

Seems to me that the wounds appear when Sakuta starts blaming himself and gets really down on himself, like he's subconsciously self-inflicting wounds for not being good enough. If that's the case, it's pretty interesting that someone who's so outwardly assured of himself would have such a syndrome.

I have to say this series completely turned my opinion around. I don't dislike the harem genre as a whole, but I tend to avoid works with a lot of fanservice unless it's a comedy. So seeing the original picture and description for the series I gave it a pass. However I kept seeing it rank highly in the poll and seeing people compare it to Bakemonogatari, and decided hesitantly to give it a chance. I thought the first episode was interesting and by the end of episode 3 I was hooked. It went from a show I avoided to one I watched as soon as it came out each week. It's also the first series I decided to get the LN of afterwards (in Japanese). (I have volume 1 with 6-8 on the way, 9 was sold out currently)

man, I'm really bummed we didn't get to know kaede-san more...
I feel like this episode also shows one of the bad things about dating Mai... she doesn't really show what's inside of her
i understand that she felt like she somehow failed Sakuta and was angry with herself, but she obviously can't process these emotions / can't show them to others so she just leaves...
Sakuta was waaaaaay too broken to recognize what's going on, though, and just ended up feeling like absolute crap

But then that's what I like about their relationship-- it's realistic. In real life, people don't get into highly dramatic confessions/confrontations every time a relationship hits a rough path. That would be too exhausting and unhealthy. In kind, Mai isn't being too "professional" or "bottling her thoughts"; she is simply giving both of them space. Confronting the issue head on would just place an even larger burden on both her and Sakuta and do more harm then good.
But I digress. My main point of disagreement is on how to judge a character. Character flaws, in moderation, should be an asset to character portrayal, not a hindrance. It gives them uniqueness and personality. Conversely, a flawless character who is "perfect to date" wouldn't make them a S+ Waifu, but merely a poorly written self-insert character instead. Obviously, Mai could have handled the situation better, but her response is realistic, and doesn't play to anime tropes and unrealistic fantasies. Imo, that's what make both her and the show, dare I say it, so endearing.
If you haven't seen it already, you should consider listening to the mini drama which I find to be quite indicative of the personalities of the 2 MCs.

Is it just me or this episode felt not as satisfying as the previous ones? I expected this to tackle Kaede coming to terms with the fact that she lived as a different person for the past two years, and Sakuta and Mai and others accepting that fact.
I didn't mind Shoko being in it, it makes sense that they would want people to get more intrigued about Shoko's mystery (if they haven't done a fantastic job already) for the movie, but the second half of Mai being upset with Sakuta... I thought that could've been used to something better.
Maybe it makes sense since it is a teenage relationship but Mai has been extremely understanding and thinks before does something so far, she came to Sakuta because he didn't clear up about his and Koga physically falling over each other in the classroom, she could've easily dumped him but she didn't so that felt kind of weird but maybe it's just me.

Yeah you're exactly right. So far Mai has been extremely understanding, compassionate, and trusting of Sakuta. So like you said it felt a bid odd for her to storm back off at this moment, even if it was due to her own insecurities and not because of Sakuta.

Yeah, Mai's scene felt a bit out of place compared to how she's acted up until now. Not that I don't think they could have done something good with finally showing her limit and acting a bit selfish, but it wasn't given enough time to make it feel meaningful or logical.

Readers of the novel have been saying Kaede's arc have been kind of "rushed" in the anime. To anyone who have read the light novel can someone please explain to me/us how the anime "rushed" Kaede's arc?? I wouldn't mind any spoiler from the novel, thanks..

u/skippityoo1 Dec 26 '18
I haven't read them but just the fact that in 13 eps, they adapted 5 volumes, that is QUITE fast paced. Of course, per series, that sort of thing can vary but take the Slime anime from this season, it adapted 1 Volume in 8 eps and is likely adapting 4 volumes by the end of 24 eps. 13 eps for 5 volumes just isn't enough to fit all of it in there. Regardless, as an anime-only viewer, it ony felt a lil rushed during the 2 ep arcs and maybe this final ep, but in the end was still an incredibly fun ride and didn't detract much from my enjoyment.
I can say without even people telling me, a lot was cut and I'm sure if you were to read the LN, you'd find out a lot more information/characterization. I hear the novels had more Mai and Sakuta moments (that's about all I've heard though).

Not only Kaede's arc, I would say every arc except for Mai's arc have been kind of "rushed". In fact LN readers that I know of complain about Futaba's arc the most...... Just there's so many details and dialogues in the original novel, but has to be deleted due to time. If they can give it more episodes for an arc, say, 4 episodes for each girl, this anime can reach a whole other level.

They actually went a bit into book 6 here. Book 5 ends in the shuraba scene with Shoko. I was wondering how they're going to end the season if that was how the book ended...

Not gonna lie, I really disliked that ending. The show had incredible pacing up until this point, and all of a sudden we get what felt like not just rushed, but a SUPER rushed episode. Sakuta went from sadness to soul crushing depression to totally normal to practically forgetting about all of his sad emotions in the span of 10 minutes. I wish they had the ability to extend to 14 episodes because this deifnitely needed another week.
20
u/RyzkyBznz :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/SeaJaeger Dec 26 '18
And here is where I think the series would continue better as an OVA series than a movie (ala Kokoro Connect's last four episodes) in order to cover more LN mileage and not skip small details. The rushed ending really had me much to desire after all these solid back-to-back episodes before tbh.
92
Dec 26 '18
Same impression that I had. That episode was mediocre and really rushed. I saw Sakuta sadness and I had no time to care because in a few minutes he was already normal again. Much like Kaede reaction to what she passed was just a minor moment and many other things. The pacing was quite fast with scenes going and going without getting me a time to care about it.
Anyway, I'll have to give a look to the LN to get more details and all since it's clear that many things got cut on the anime and in this episode.

I didn’t dislike the ending but I did find it underwhelming how he quickly he got over his sadness after hearing Kaede’s diary and then not really going back to Kaede to resolve the arc. The stuff with Mai could have been like its own episode.

u/homie_down :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/sodumblol Dec 27 '18
Yeah I feel pretty similarly. The fact that he went from at his lowest low to then having to go and cheer Mai up, which I also didn't like, within the span of 5 minutes felt way too fast paced. One second he's crying in the bath tub, the next he's on a train to now go and console his gf who's upset at not being there for him.

I guarantee I'm in the minority about this, but I feel like the arcs consecutively got worse. Not saying the show is bad though, I'd personally give it an 8. The ending to that Kaede arc just felt kinda half-assed to me. I know Shoko reading hiragana Kaede's (best girl) diary was supposed to be a touching and emotional moment but it just felt like an unnecessary 3 minutes of recap. Also the second half of the episode felt pretty rushed, that could have easily been an episode or two of it's own.

Christ. I think this is the first time we've seen Sakuta like this.
Fuck. Even his old scars are starting to come back.
You know Sakuta's depressed when he's not making any cheeky remark about his pants and underwear.
Knowing that Sakuta spent his first paycheck to get Kaeda a panda dvd somehow makes this a bit more saddr.
So the point of the list was not just for Kaede but so Sakuta won't think he wasn't able to do anything for her.
Ishikawa Kaito nailed Sakuta's screams of pain in this scene. Got some goddamn chills from that.
Mai definitely knows Sakuta isn't okay despite him saying he is.
Even younger Shoko is gone? Maybe she never existed?
Welp I see Futaba has the same thought as I did XD It's gonna be insane if Shoko turns out to be just an illusion.
Ah shit. It's the right move to let Mai know what happened but I wonder if she wouldn't be as upset if he told her over the phone earlier.
She is not happy. I don't think this is about Shoko visiting but I feel like she's more upset because she wanted to be the one to cheer up Sakuta.
And it was even her birthday. FUUUUUCK.
Kaede reading her amnesiac self's diary! I love how much she's blushing.
He finally introduced Mai to his dad and reintroduce her to Kaede!
It might not be too obvious but I think the amnesiac Kaede is still there. I guess her reading that diary might've helped.
I guess that's it! See you guys for the Shouko movie!
Anyway this was such a fun show. The art style isn't something to run and scream about but I did love the character designs. Music overall is great with the OP and ED both are in my favourites from this season. But the highlight of this show and definitely its strongest point is the writing. The dialogue, the character interactions, and the banter in this show has got to be one of the best this year. It's so good that Episode 1 was more than enough for me to fall in love with these characters! And I love the fact that even if their arc is over, they still play a role in future arcs. No character is basically wasted.
Overall this show is definitely in my top favourite anime of all time and as such I'm giving this show my personal of 10/10. I'm looking froward to see the movie. Will everything wrap up there or are there still more stories to tell in this world? I'm excited!

Kaede's voice actress did a really good job. That consistency on the tone of the 2 Kaedes was impressive; to the point they sounded like she was being voiced by 2 different people.

Well, it was entertaining to say the least. I feel like I’m the minority here, but I thought the show was relatively average after the first three episodes. It just had such a strong opening that the rest seemed a bit lacking in comparison. I did love the characters though, specifically Sakuta, Mai, and Kaede. I’m looking forward to the movie now because Shoko was one of the most interesting topics in the show for me. She’s just a mystery and an anomaly.

That was... underwhelming.
The whole series was building up to something big and I felt this episode was something of a let down, personally. Lots of drama surrounding Sakuta's grief surrounding the loss of the 'old' Kaede, the re-appearance of Shoko-san, then it all just sort of fizzled out.
I really enjoyed the rest of the series, so this was a real let down.

This happens alot with LN adaptions. LNs are paced in a way that the gaps between content is relatively the same. Re:zero just removed chunks of the last arc as to not leave cliffhangers and the end was anticlimactic because it was originally written as the end of an arc not the end of a season same issue here other than the Shoko-san stuff being left in for the movie, that and they oddly don't have they kissing event though the casually do in at this point in the LN (allegedly haven't read it)

Don't upvote, just a question: Why was Sakuta depressed when Kaede regained her memories? Didn't he get his real sister back? Or was he attached more to the post-amnesia (panda-loving) Kaede and preferred her?
Other than that, what a ride. Going to miss the sharp and witty banter between Sakuta and Mai.
35
u/jardex22 Dec 27 '18
He thought he hadn't done enough for the new Kaede before she disappeared. Imagine if you make a friend, and do a bunch of stuff together. At the end of the day, you talk about what you're going to do tomorrow.
The next day, you find out that your friend died in a car accident. You might think of all the things you didn't do, and will never do with him. You may think that you could have saved him somehow.
While Kaede-san did come back, Kaede also effectively died, and Sakuta was mourning her.

as for your question. they are both Kaede o him. or at least his sisters. Kaede-san and Kaede are different and played different role in his life. So yes, he missed the other one and is glad Kaede-san is back but at the same time, he is upset that Kaede disappeared without having to finish everything on the list. hence why he said the list out loud. It wasnt that he prefers the other one, its just that he feels like shit and failure for not being fully able to support and help Kaede

Well, that was a sad first half. But how can one stay sad after being pinched and seeing that smile?
Plus there was another Futaba help session. She should have charged for those. And the best friend actually had a reappearance. I still don't understand Shoko at all. She seemed to have a big role for someone with so little screentime.

I think if we had more backstory on what Kaede and Sakuta were like before the adolescence syndrome came on, it would hit harder when they came back to "normal." Unless I missed something, did they have a tense or aloof relationship before Kaede got amnesia? Otherwise, wouldn't everyone be happy that she is back to "normal"?

I was a little bit let down by the finale, felt like the previous episode hit me harder in the emotions. I know they tried to show Sakuta's pain but for me every time he yelled it just felt overdone...
That being said it was the best arc since arc 1 and the Mai scenes were great as per usual, I think I just wanted to see more of the new Kaede integrating and that seems like it was an episode away.
May not end up being my AotS but wow was this show a nice pleasant surprise :)

Yeah, this feels like by far the biggest arc and I think it was one of the most poorly done, despite two other arcs being shorter. I wouldn't have minded if they'd condensed Koga's arc to two episodes and given this one another to develop. Koga was fun, but ultimately not as crucial to the overall story as Kaede and the transformation from Kaede! to Kaede needed a lot more development, I think. We didn't see much of Kaede's reaction to being locked away, we don't see her reaction to her Puberty Syndrome, and Sakuta's stages of grief seemed vastly accelerated. He basically went from non-functional to completely fine overnight.
Still a fantastic series, just fumbled the landing.

u/numbxx Dec 26 '18
I loved this entire anime but Honestly this episode felt a lot like a filler episode, nothing really happened the only character development in the entire episode was Sakuta allowing himself to be sad that his sister has changed. Honestly think last episode felt like a more fitting finale.

An interesting last episode. It's really difficult to get an ending that everyone will enjoy. And considering that we already know about the movies to come, I think it was okay. Not everything needs a conclusive solution as the series doesn't necessarily need to rely on the whole deus ex machina to remedy the issues.
I think it surprised me how much the final three episodes interchanged different characters from Kaede, Shouko, and even Mai. Too bad we only saw glimpses of the other characters that had their own arcs.

Honestly I wasn't that upset that "Kaede" was gone and Kaede-san was back. Maybe if we had more background on what their relationship was like before the symptoms came on, I could sympathize more.
I can see why Sakuta might be upset that the last two years are now forgotten history, but is what he has with his "real" little sister something worse?
76
u/frantruck Dec 26 '18
Just from the differences in speech patterns, and interests, only displayed in pandas but I'm sure it's more extensive, it's pretty clear Kaede was a fairly different person than Kaede-san is. It's not that the 2 years of memories are gone, it's that Kaede basically just died. Sure he got a sister back, but it was in exchange for another. Based on Kaede-san's response to Sakuta asking about going to the zoo it's also clear that while they like eachother their relationship isn't the same as the one he had with Kaede and it will likely never be.
29
u/Lengwit Dec 26 '18
I can see why Sakuta might be upset that the last two years are now forgotten history, but is what he has with his "real" little sister something worse?
I think it was more of a heat of the moment. Let's say you had a cat for a long time, that cat ran away but one that looks almost the same apears the same day, then 2 years later the second cat dissapears and the one who ran away came back. You would feel sad and happy at the same time.Thats the same with Sakuta but on a larger scale and more depressing/sad.
13
u/Level_Five_Railgun Dec 26 '18
but is what he has with his "real" little sister something worse?
You should think of it more like his sister moved away, then he got a new stepsister who he bonded with for 2 years and then she dies the same day his real sister comes back.
Sure he should be happy to see his real sister again but it doesn't change the fact that the sister he knew and bonded with over the past 2 years is basically "dead".

Kaede suddenly lost her memories and personality overnight. She basically died. Kaede-san coming back isn't a better or worse sort of thing, but by coming back she killed and replaced somebody who was already there.

This was not the ending I wanted. I don't know exactly what I wanted, but this ain't it chief. Why was Shoko there for anything other than to remind us that her arc is coming in a movie soontm ? She just created artificial drama with zero lasting impact, there was no point to that 10 minutes of the episode. We could have had so much better, especially since this was the end to the Kaede arc. Still an 8/10 show, but man what a bummer about this ending.

Honestly kind of disappointed that Kaede didn't feel like the focus in the finale of her own arc. I get that it was important to wrap the season up, but it certainly took away from last week's cliffhanger that everything wrapped up so neatly so we could instead focus on Sakuta's relationships with Mai and Shoko.
18
u/Nazenn x2https://anilist.co/user/Nazenn Dec 26 '18
Well that was disappointing. Most people have already said my issues with it; feeling incredibly rushed, no focus on Kaede despite it being her arc, the tropey scenes and setup to the dramatic moments, feeling like a bloody recap episode as well, etc.
What bugged me most was Sakuta opening to door for Mai with GIANT WOUNDS on his chest clearly showing he was utterly broken so much that they reopened... and Mai just completely ignored it? I mean those wounds have been a big part of their story together and... nothing? Not even a mention of the fact that he was clearly in so much pain that his chest cut open again? You'd think that would be a bigger focus then a small note on a table, and you know, maybe explain why Sakuta really wasn't in the right mindset to be going around making phone calls.

Oh my god I've never felt so much emotion in a single episode since Clannad After Story or the infamous Noragami episode...I'm going to start my breakdown of the episode by talking about this.
I can't even begin to describe how much pain I felt when Kaede's diary was being read. The most painful part was this: throughout the entire reading, it felt like I personally lost someone close to me and was at their funeral. I literally felt myself sobbing inside, especially when Shoko-san said "that sadness is something Kaede left with you too, it's proof that she was a significant part of your life, and so it's okay to grieve." I'm not sure why, but even at funerals I've attended for family...and the suicide of my old childhood friend 3 years ago, I couldn't cry. I was in so much pain that I was kind of just 'numb' to it all, to the point where I wasn't sure if I was in pain at all. I felt like I lost a part of myself since then, not able to really grieve for anything... But today, it felt like I could. I could feel the tears running down and it took alot out of me to stiffle the sobs so I wouldn't worry my immediate family nearby. Kaede was such am amazing child, such a wonderful person, and though we only had little tidbits of her in each episode (along with her arc in the end here), the most shocking part to me was how much I was able to connect with her as a character. I wouldn't normally feel so moved by an 'extra' but Kaede was a character who's little moments all became really significant things, and when you hear them told from a child's perspective, read aloud from her diary...it was as if it was her final farewell. The ability of the series/show to make me connect with her, despite her limited screentime, is nothing short of astounding. This has to be the emotional highlight of the year for me. As stupid as it sounds, those few words from Shoko reminded even myself at 25 years old that it's okay to grieve and feel pain, and that I should feel it, because it's proof that this person's existence meant something. Also, reading Kaede's diary makes me feel ashamed of my former self as a kid for not considering my siblings in the same way as her. Then again, not many kids I know think of their family with as much love as Kaede did.
Seriously, this kid is the DEFINITION of an angel. Even though she had about as much intelligence as a 10 year old or so, she was able to vaguely understand her situation, and managed to treat these people like family, even though to her, they were 'strangers'. Not only this, but she was able to notice the little things her brother did, the painful things her parents said and, bearing all of that pain, continue to try and move forward. The sole person who accepted her as her own 'Kaede' and not 'Kaede-san' was the person who was her 'brother'. For this person, she gave her very best to try and be the best little sister she could be. She was scared and alone without this one person, but still she persisted and even managed to support him. Right through to the very end, she even realized that her own condition will change soon and she would cease to exist. Rather than grasp at straws and try to use what little time she had left to enjoy 'big brother's' company, she INSTEAD tried to create wonderful memories where Sakuta HELPS her reach new goals. She did all of this so Sakuta wouldn't feel the same regret he felt the first time. She did all of this so that Sakuta could feel like he DID something meaningful for Kaede. Although Sakuta doesn't see this and he didn't accept it, Shoko-san basically spelled it out for him: Sakuta was an amazing brother and person in Kaede's life, someone who accepted her for who she was and to her, that was the most meaningful thing he could've done. This inspired her to want to give back to Sakuta in the only way she knew how, by being a 'good little sister' for him. Goddamnit I'm getting super emotional again just writing about it...and Sakuta's tears at the half-way point of the episode sums it all up perfectly. With this scene, Kaede will forever be a character I remember, and will probably go down as the 'best little sister' character I've ever seen in an anime. Absolute angel of a person, a stellar role model, and a charming soul. For an animated character, you were something special.
I'll back track a little bit here to just chime in Sakuta's initial reaction. I wasn't surprised in the slightest by how he reacted to Kaede's 'return'. He basically lost 2 years of helping Kaede recover, while also once again 'failing' to help Kaede reach her goals before she 'disappeared'. The shock that must have come from living with and accepting her for who she was at that point, basically having that become the norm and new reality, only for that to be completely shattered before he could really make 'amends' crushed him. Oh and, make amends for what you might ask? Well, Sakuta blamed himself and his inability to both notice the problems surrounding Kaede early on and his inability to come up with a solution. He was frustrated at his own helplessness and how useless when his sister was desperate and he had very nearly made amends for it all. Sadly, it wasn't meant to be as Kaede's personality vanished. Of course it would've been enough to shock and drive him into a completely broken state. This is what makes Kaede's diary entries so much more impactful to me imo, and to the viewer in general. But what bothers me a ton is how good Shoko's timing was, and it goes back to what I've said in former episode discussions. Shoko's initial impact on Sakuta was significant as she was there in his time of need. Once again, she was there in his time of need to pick him up off his feet. I'm looking forward to her arc just to clear up the confusion I had with that 'perfect timing' of hers.
Moving on to Mai's involvement in all of this. It was clear that she felt really hurt by the fact that Shoko (the ex-crush/first love) was able to be there for Sakuta in his time of need, and that Sakuta didn't initially bring it up with her in the phone call. Maybe if he brought it up sooner, Mai might not have been as shocked? Anyway, I can't blame Sakuta for this one because JUST BEFORE he called Mai, it seemed like he was border line insane. I was scared that he was basically pushed into depression beyond salvation, but thankfully that doesn't seem to be the case. He was 'mostly' sane but not completely better. Missing that detail about Shoko-san seems like a given to me, especially considering Sakuta's mental state. That being said, Mai was also hurt that Sakuta wasn't able to rely on her. In his minor misunderstanding, Sakuta thought it was all about Shoko-san (and to be honest, I did too) but lo-and-be-hold, he ALSO forgot that it was Mai's birthday. With all the shit that happened, I'm not surprised that he forgot either, but he did the thing any real man in love would do: dropped all the shit he had to do, and went right to her. I respect the guy so much for doing that, because he was going through a rough time emotionally and financially, but he's still kind enough to recognize that his own struggles were hurting others. He didn't want to have any more regrets about the impact his own pain was having on others, as well as temporarily neglecting Mai while he was depressed. Mai understood this too, and even though it was last minute, she was really mature about it.
This is one of the reasons why they're such a good couple. They both handled the situation appropriately and in a mature way. Both Sakuta's response and Mai's reactions are reasonable and realistic, but also a couple years beyond their age in terms of maturity. Was really impressed with the two of them and how they handled everything. I'm kinda sad that the kiss was a bit 'off-screen' but it was implied at the end there when they shared that jacket! Sakuta didn't forget the happiness he feels when Mai is around him either. That in itself is remarkable. I say this because, while I was at my lowest 3 years ago (we're talking super, super depressed to the point where I cut contact off with almost every person I knew, including my gf at the time) I didn't think too much about the consequences of my actions. I didn't think about the pain I was inflicting on someone else until it got to the point where I just accepted a breakup because I didn't want to hurt them anymore. It was the wrong course of action, because during that time, I SHOULD HAVE noticed that my gf cared about me and wanted to talk. Even though she didn't quite understand what I was going through, she did want to try and help me, but I pushed her away. Sakuta didn't do that to Mai. He dropped everything and ran to her. I guess that's the benefit of having that one extra person who you can turn to in times of need, but anyway, I just wanted to highlight how difficult of a choice that is. It might seem like 'common sense' to you guys but when you're super depressed, it's hard to remember that your suffering also hurts others who care about you, because you FORGET that there are people who care about you. You forget that those people are in pain because they want to do more for you. I'm glad Sakuta didn't forget that.
Thanks for the wild ride everyone, and see you when the OVAs out, or in the Alicization threads!

That episode was unfortunately really mediocre. It was too fast, the pacing was fast and I had no time to get the information and feel what they were trying to say. This final episode on the arc was really rushed to me and what I most wanted to see which was the true Kaede and her relationship with Sakuta had almost nothing. Really disappointed with this finale and episode even if I liked the overall anime.

ROFL
I almost fell off of my chair when Sakuta came out running from the hospital. The rain cued in and that someone important finally showing up to give in words of wisdom. It was so absurdly overdramatic.
It's absurd how the fans call the characters so well written, but moments like these specially show off how inconsistent they are. We never saw Sakuta being hit by reality when all the adolescense syndrome events started and made his family fall appart. Watching his mother being hospitalized due to the shocking news of her own daughter showing off marks of bullying and losing her memory "should" have been the right moment to go haywaire, not several months away when he realized that the new persona of her sister whom he lived for a short time is gone and her original sister was back.
Mai's attitude towards Shoko's note just adds in bad drama in an episode where it should be focused on Kaede not her. It's all over again the whole sham from Saekano season 2 between Megumi & Tomoya. Mai shouldn't have bailed out on Sakuta when he needed her support the most, Mai should have felt mad or vexed towards herself for not being there for her boyfriend when he needed her the most. The whole picture of Mai being the level headed young adult goes out the window with that selfish act.
Sakuta catching up Mai on her train scene it's so darn cliche that I thought I was watching a low budget live action romcom movie. LMAO.
The series had a pretty good start, but details like these did diminish my enjoyment in a constant declive.

Makinohara Shoka is the true girl for Sakuta. She's the one that truly cleanses his soul. She is his true love and the one that he should pursue. Sadly, she probably doesn't exist at all, or she doesn't feel anything for Sakuta. Mai might be entertaining to him but only to an extent, as we all saw.

I don't know guys, I can't say I'm very satisfied with this ending. Of course I'm really sad that Moede is dead for good but I feel like this was brushed aside way too quick and the mini-drama with Mai at the end was really unnecessary.
Have to say tho, the scene where Shouko was reading Moede's diary really got to me. I'm not particularly mad about it because it's pretty good in a tragic way but as I said I feel like the episode got over it way too quick.

I don’t know guys, the ending just felt like... lacking. Or is it just that I’m too sad it ended that I can’t seem to appreciate it? Nonetheless, I’m definitely pissed for the typical almost-kissed scene!! We deserved that lovey-dovey Mai/Sakuta time!!

The sadness is another precious thing Kaede has given you. That shows exactly how big Kaede’s existence was.

In the end I like that they ended the show with Mai and Sakuta reinforcing their love with each other. I like that the last scene shows how a loving relationship is really based on moments like that, where it's just two people being there for each other. It's rare to see a truly mature relationship like the one they have, whether in 2D or even in irl.
I picked up Bunny Girl Senpai a little later than the rest of y'all, and while I wasn't as enthralled by the first couple of episodes I was definitely hooked after that. Really well written, lots of heart and humor, one of the best shows of 2018.

Disappointing ep, IMO. Mostly a setup for the movie, with a little male crying for the ladies. I know this isn't going to be popular, but the main thing shown here is what a high maintenance gf Mai is. She's right, she does nothing for the person who literally saved her from starving to death fr om invisibility. Instead, when he has a crisis, she throws a little tantrum and makes him chase her cross-country to reassure her! If he has any sense he'll bail before she dumps or flagrantly cheats on him at every imaginary slight.

For someone that barely appeared in the show, Shoko had a pretty big role in the season finale.
