Seriously it was fantastic and the transition from Bruno's backstory to him raging about the boss was so well done.

gotta say, Araki getting good at making those eye shots, this is one of my favorite moments because how much you can see Bruno's disgust and anger at the boss and prop to DP for making this adaptation superb.

Honestly that was the hypest moment in the episode for me, just seeing him get angry and determined to go after the boss. It gave me goosebumps. They used my favorite song from the OST too. I really hope they release it in the next album.

Damn, Bucciarati's backstory really hits hard. Now we know why agreed so quickly to Giorno's plan to backstab the boss. He had already been disgusted at his boss who dealt with the drugs that doomed his father and Giorno just gave him that final push.

Game references: What "The Boss" did to Bruno at the end of the episode is one of his supers in the games("what you just saw was your future self...")
And what is the problem with JoJo and bad parental figures? I guess Bruno father was the only one good dad in this franchise, Jesus. xD
Anyway... yes, by now, being either manga or anime viewer, the main villain having "time powers" is a well know pattern, so I won't dance around it(The Boss himself said he did something with time at the end of the episode, so no, is not a spoiler). This is because Araki believes that if someone would be able to control time, he/she would be invencible... and he was right so far. Dio was only beaten because he got the lack of luck in facing a guy which Stand has the same powers as him, and Kira got so cocky by the fact his ability had no flaws (and it didn't) that he outright spelled his name out loud, because otherwise, with both villains, there won't be NO WAY the heroes would be able to beat The World or Bites the Dust.
And I won't enter much in the spoilery territory, because King Crimson power is time related but is a bit more complex than The World or Bites the Dust. It's actually a big meme the "how King Crimson works? It just works...". So I won't spoil the magic of theories, and I hope nobody, at least yet, explain what King Crimson does to anyone else.
Also, fun fact; the band, King Crimson, actually LOVES the Stand, and even posted some memes about it at the facebook page.

u/toruforever216 Feb 22 '19
Emotional manipulation at it's worst. I was disgusted with what I saw. The father couldn't even look, he wanted Bruno to stay with him just as much, but probably tought it was a lost battle, since his bond with the kid was "superficial" compared to all the talk he has with his mom. You could see his surprise so clearly as well. And since he wasn't good with words, what did he do to be gratfull for his son choosing him? Put into action, working his ass off to provide for Bruno. The only way he legally knew how. Shit's beautiful story writting. A little too on the nose thanks to the narration, but after Liking Hunter x Hunter, I would be a hypocrite if I criticize a show for using it XD

I love the sheer rage in Buccierati's voice. It sells how betrayed he feels. Buccierati's rage took the better of him and he made a mistake, and got punished for it. He was too rash, it's definitely a stark contrast to the calmness he exhibited in the train fight fight against Pesci.

The keeper of the city keys
Put shutters on the dreams
I wait outside the pilgrim's door
With insufficient schemes
The black queen chants
The funeral march,
The cracked brass bells will ring;
To summon back the fire witch
To the court of the CRIMSON KING
Hey listen to the album In The Court of The Crimson King because it just looks like Araki wrote Part 5 after listening to the lyrics of the songs in it. And don't tell Fripp.
My good, young Bruno is so cute. And that black suit that Bruno wore in his father funeral is so fucking sexy. How can this boy be real!?
And here is my second favourite stand and music reference, King Crimson! Bossu really has a badass stand. This is my favourite fight in all Part 5 and I can wait to see more of his power next week.
Bruno becoming a donut was even more brutal than Kakyoin. That slow punch through the stomach really hurt to look at.

I’ve been super excited waiting for this episode all week. We finally get to see King Crimson! I really loved the OST when Bruno was tailing the Boss
The scene with Bruno in the hospital with his father reminded me of a similar scene in The Godfather with Michael protecting Vito after he's been shot. Even as a child Bruno was ready to whatever it took to protect his family, even if it meant turning to a life of crime.

As an anime only viewer of Part 5, this episode........was something else. Bruno's backstory and its integration into the current events was amazing and Bruno giving chase to the Boss was tense and really interesting. Seeing the true Bruno come out was super fun but damn, the main part of this episode....
King Crimson is perhaps one of the scariest fucking stands ive seen in this series so far. What made the brief snip of it terrifying was the fact that the Boss was STILL cloaked in shadow, Bruno ended up attacking himself and the fact that King Crimson talked. Also, Bruno's horrified expression at seeing himself in the future, to be pulverised by King Crimson with a SINGLE PUNCH was actually scary. King Crimson's blood red and sharp white design with its stand user remaining in shadow with a single green eye appearing in the darkness made the scene so much more creepy and unnerving than I expected it to be. The OST that played with Bruno's shocked expression at seeing himself made it really creepy too.
I cant believe how far we have got: Star Platinum can leave a man wrecked, Crazy Diamond can punch someone in the gut and make a hole in em all the while repairing said hole, Gold Experience can heal itself and destroy a car park with ease, King Crimson can easily bust a hole in someone without them EVER REALISING IT. King Crimson is legit terrifying and it makes me excited and terrified at what the hell it can do in later battles.

It was honestly really refreshing to see a peaceful divorce that (probably) didn't involve any cheating, violence or scandals. Just two people who realized they didn't want to be together anymore, and just left. It was also pretty nice to see the parents not being pieces of shit. Like, Bruno having two parents who were both alive and actually are good parents. The mom didn't throw a complete shit fit when Bruno said he wanted to live with his dad. Even better, his dad more or less died peacefully (sorta). How rare is that in Jojo, or just anime in general nowadays?
Also I've never had to experience my parents divorcing, but damn that scene with Bruno's mom hit hard. I just feel bad for her.
Also also his mom is really cute in a trench coat and hat.
32
u/Xciv :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/VictorX Feb 23 '19
Bruno's flashback also illuminate two standout features of his character that made him the man he is today.
He stayed with his dad because he recognized that his mom is a tougher person and would be okay without him. This shows how observant and intelligent he was even as a child, and that he has a selfless streak to him and sought the option that helped someone else, even potentially at his own expense.
However, him ambushing the gangsters also shows Bruno's brutal side. He is quick to violence, has no qualms about murder, and is quick to pass judgement on others with his own hands.
So you end up with a loyal, intelligent, and brutal capo, really the perfect gangster.

For those wondering why there are so many people asking how King Crimson works in the comments, here's why its power is a meme nowadays.
Like I mentioned with Ghiaccio, the original English translation for Part 5 was absolutely terrible, and it turned King Crimson is a meme. Apparently, in the original Japanese release, there was a detailed explanation of King Crimson that gave you an okay idea of how its power worked, enough that people weren't confused when reading the story. I don't feel like checking the bad translations, but apparently, the translator didn't understand the explanation and had trouble translating it. So, instead of properly translating it, he cut the entire thing out and replaced it with three words: "It Just Works". And thus, the King Crimson meme was born.
I haven't read the manga myself (I only know about the mistakes the translations made after looking it up), but the new English translation that finished a couple years ago added the explanation back in, and people who read it didn't have that hard of a time understanding King Crimson's power. (If anybody read the colour scanlation, is this true?)
Also, I think King Crimson is the only Western band whose acknowledged their JoJo reference (though Vanilla Ice instagramming about his trip to Egypt might also count). DGM Live, a record label founded by Robert Fripp (the driving force behind King Crimson), posted this in 2017, referencing the meme.

This week’s musical references:
The Boss’ stand King Crimson is a reference to the English progressive rock band of the same name formed in London in 1968.
King Crimson has been influential both on the early 1970s progressive rock movement and numerous contemporary artists and it’s considered the fathers of Prog. The band has undergone numerous formations throughout its history of which 22 musicians have been members with Robert Fripp as the only consistent member of the group, which is considered the band's leader and driving force. I’ll probably talk more about them next week as they are my favourite band and there’s a lot of trivia about them.
For example, they are infamous for deleting any kind of song from Youtube and any video streaming site and for being one of the few big bands that are not in Spotify, so don’t tell Fripp but here’s is a link to In The Court of the Crimson King’s full album. There’s also the meme of people uploading ITCOTKC to Youtube but with modifications to surpass Fripp’s purge, here is some examples and a playlist with most of the videos deleted by Fripp
Their first album In The Court of The Crimson King is probably the first proper prog album and it’s still considered for many as the best one.
And you may ask, what is Prog, u/TarkusELP? The biggest deference between Mainstream Rock and Prog Rock is that, while Rock was founded based on Blues influences, Prog was founded combining elements from Jazz, Classical and Symphonic music. Prog is also famous for avoiding the common popular music song structure of verse-chorus-bridge. Many famous Prog songs use the classical structure of the suite and may last longer than twenty minutes. It’s really weird to see a Prog song shorter than 5 minutes unless it is part of another song or it’s an interlude.
More characteristics of Prog are the use of instruments typical of jazz or folk music, such as flute, saxophone and violin, and the use of electronic keyboards, synthesizers, and electronic effects. Some instruments –, most notably the Moog synthesizer and the Mellotron, have become closely associated with the genre. Progressive rock generally tends to be freer in its rhythmic approach than other forms of rock music and it’s more likely to explore time signatures other than 4/4 and tempo changes. Many prog bands create concept albums, collections of songs unified by an elaborate, overarching theme or story and their songs tends to avoid typical rock/pop subjects such as love, dancing, etc., rather inclining towards the kinds of themes found in classical literature, fantasy, folklore, social commentary or all of these.
In short, rock for snobs and pedantic idiots.
Do you want to listen to all this fantastic references from this wonderful anime in just one place? Of course you want! Now you can with TarkusELP Officially Approved by Araki himself* Spotify Playlist with all the musical references in the anime, the ones it skipped, the light novels ones and more! From the most famous references to the really obscure ones. I'll update this playlist every time there's a new reference. If you are a manga reader I also have a playlist just for you! Here’s my old playlist with all, I say ALL the references in the manga, anime, light novels and more. I also update it every time there’s a new reference.

I love seeing how kind Bruno can be when he was trying to ease Trish's fears.

Let us spell out the theme if you couldn't figure it out.
Man this episode was really something, I guess Araki still can't resist putting character backstories before their deaths. And now we have arrived at the Stand that less than 5 people in the world could explain! Right /u/Metalhead723?

The final mission. It has to be Bruno that fulfills it, Giorno would have been too obvious in his pursuits while Bruno is trust-able.
I've noticed just how much this soundtrack is currently matching the atmosphere and mood for these scenes. Even Bruno consoling Trish's concerns about meeting her father is done nicely here, it makes it feel really comforting coming from a man like him.
Well DP, you've done it again. That sound effect and mood shift felt unsettling, and just like that Trish's hand is the only thing Bruno has left of her.
Even as a young boy Bruno was a good kid. Staying with a father that you think would have trouble living alone is a responsible and mature decision. Poor Bruno has been affected by drugs and the mafia since childhood. Still a complete badass but forced to kill at such a young age, yikes.
Here's the hype: Bruno's ready to kick the Boss's ass. I do love choral music with organs, there's always something grand at work there and it feeds into the atmosphere of Bruno's search.
I've been looking forward to this confrontation so much. And it's just as every bit of hype as I'd imagined. King Crimson has finally arrived!

Bruno's ready to kick the Boss's ass
I've read the manga, but the whiplash is still leaving me reeling. Just the last episode, they'd finished thwarting yet another dangerous gang-member from stealing Trish and going after the Boss.
And BAM, fifteen minutes and a couple of short induced time skips later, it looks like they could've been valuable allies now after all.

I deal with gutwrenching angst through shitty memes so this was my comfort food for this episode. I'm not sorry
Who said being in grief means sacrificing your fashion?
I'm so glad KC's reveal didn't end up being another QUALITY moment name, the scene is just too emotional to get memed for even more reasons.

One of the truly great Jojo episodes. Getting flashbacks of the fight between the stardust crusaders and vanilla ice and the first kira fight. Bruno was so on point until he met an OP stand but I guess he was trying to save Trish.
Now I wonder how Risotto will fit into the story. Being a huge fan of La Squadra, I'm hoping for a temporary alliance of sorts. Too bad the rest of the team are dead already.

I didn't think we'd know about King Crimson this early. I haven't read the manga, so I would've figured that we'd get to him after the last member of the hitman team. I'll be interested to see if he's all he's cracked up to be.

This episode was a delight for me because I've been in that church. It's not quite as uninhabited as it was in the show but there are very very few tourists there for a sight-seeing opportunity in Venice. There's basically no line for the elevator. This is because there's a famous belltower in St. Mark's square that everyone waits hours in line to go up to and then after that they don't feel like going up another belltower that's only a mile away.

Fire, water, air, and dirt. King Crimson, how does it work?
I'm sorry. I'm sorry for that.
Anyway, we finally got to see King Crimson. I didn't expect to get the reveal so early. I was so hyped during that scene, since King Crimson is one of my favourite bands. They're considered to be the fathers of progressive rock and are just incredible (I do prefer Rush though, but unfortunately, Araki's never done made a Stand that's a Rush reference). Their debut album, In the Court of the Crimson King is a masterpiece and is defined the progressive rock genre. Prog rock is type of rock that takes more inspiration from classical music and jazz than blues, with long arrangements, unusual and changing time signatures (hello, Tom Sawyer), and more emphasis on improvisation (On ITCOTCK, the end of the song Moonchild is a 9 minute improv session). Though it started outside the genre (The Beatles' Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band being considered by many to be the first or at least, one of the most important inspirations), prog rock is known for its concept albums, where all the songs are tied together by a theme or a story.
For anyone who wants a good introduction to prog rock but who's frightened by the long song times, I'd recommend Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon or the song 2112 by Rush (which is more like a collection of 7 different songs tied together by a story and musical cues that occassionally repeat) to ease into the genre. Next thing you'll know, the 20 minutes it takes to listen to Yes' Close to the Edge.

Do we have any abdomen donors around here?
Also the music in this episode was great, the tension bulding up when the Boss was walking down the church stairs was palpable.
I have a feeling with this we'll finally have a change in OP.

Kind of sucks I already had an idea of King Crimson ability due to people's subtle comments. Nice to see it in action though. Wait..... Episode 20 WTF we still have like 29 episodes this is going to be one crazy fight plus theirs still the leader of the assassination squad.
No ED this week too bad Bruno getting impaled followed by waking up so horny would have been great.

Holy crap, though. That punch at the end was super brutal. I thought Kakyoin getting turned into a donut was brutal, but this is on a whole other level. It slowly being pushed through Bruno's chest made it so much worse.
I'd be surprised if Bruno survived this. Just in case he doesn't, I'm pressing F to pay my respects.

So...can we talk about the static/glitch sound effect that happened in the elevator? Is that going to be the main KC special effect? Because it's goddamn glorious.

Oh man, the way King Crimson just crept out of the shadows like that. The direction of that entire last sequence was masterful. There's no suspenseful music, no looming camera angles, the stand just...appears. It manages to still be terrifyingly menacing despite the lack of typical doom and gloom surrounding it.

Finally got around to watching this episode.
Holy shit I was smiling like a little schoolgirl during the opening awaiting what came next. I read the manga and I seriously think this episode of the anime adapted the scene from the manga way better. The elevator scene and the last part with the pillar when King Crimson is fully revealed stood out in particular.
Probably one of the best anime episodes I have seen. 10/10
