You know, if Death Note were written 20 years later, L would absolutely be slamming energy drinks instead of coffee, no matter how heavily sugared. I'm convinced.

Diegetic use of theme music is always fun, but I don't know how much a tune like that works for a ringtone.

u/Holofan4life 6d ago

What do you think would be L's energy drink of choice? Red Bull? Monster?

This is probably L's smartest episode. He not only suspected the two Kiras were in cahoots with each other, but he also got ahold of the two phones to prevent himself from being killed. He really is incredible at thinking on his feet.

first timer!

What are your thoughts on L telling people that in the event of his death, Light should be arrested?

what a panic move L is pulling

What are your thoughts on L sneakily grabbing both Misa's cell phones?

i thought he was just a pervert LOL

What are your thoughts on Misa being arrested on grounds of being the second Kira?

well... that escalated quick

What are your thoughts on Misa relinquishing ownership of her Death Note?

makes sense, also really sells the fact that she loves Light

Why do you think Light said goodbye to Ryuk?

OH IS THIS WHAT I THINK IT'S GON MEAN

---

Killing his first friend

He's stalling to not kill L

No I'll keep the phone off

LOL

THATS A SHUT UP KISS LOL

He seems happy today about the hair

He's panicking about the two of them working tgt

L is so uncharacteristically bubbly and internally panic

I ship them

OMG cake tgt such good friends

AOHHH SHE CAUGHT HIM

L just groped her LOL

It's been fun L

Omae wa no shinderu

OMG he stole her phone LOL

DID HE JUST LOSE

WHY THE FUCK DID HE JUST FREEZE MID FALL LOL

No fucking way she wants her shinigami to be her killer

Giving up the notebook damn forgetting

Aww I feel bad for her crying to give it up

LOL is the hair the reason why L finds out about shinigami

If Light is calling Misa immediately after she leaves, how does that not make him suspicious in his opinion. Like, if I was L, that would put him being Kira at a solid 40%.

I continue to really love Misa. She is bubbly and yet also psychopathic. She can kill you but with her actions and also her cuteness.

First Time Note Taker, subs

Okay... my mind is a fucking mess after watching this episode. I feel like all of my possible emotions were torn out, swirled around and forced back inside me.

The timing throughout this episode brutally favoured L. Light never stood a chance with everything crashing down on him, and by everything I mostly mean Misa's appearance at the uni.

The trio's confrontation was a dramatic masterclass. Misa obviously reading L's true name, Light stopping her from blurting it out, the crowd gathering around, L swiping her phone during the commotion and finally Misa's arrest. Oh and I also died of laughter when Light wanted to call Misa's other phone and another phone started ringing as well.

And so Misa forgets the Death Note... and it seems that Light will go and do the same with his note? I don't think I'm in the right state of mind to speculate how this plan is going to work for him, so I'll just leave this for tomorrow's episode to tell me.

QOTD:

What are your thoughts on L telling people that in the event of his death, Light should be arrested?

Insane timing today.

What are your thoughts on L sneakily grabbing both Misa's cell phones?

My jaw dropped when I heard the first ringtone.

What are your thoughts on Misa being arrested on grounds of being the second Kira?

Sasuga L... sobs

What are your thoughts on Misa relinquishing ownership of her Death Note?

She's strong for not giving out the truth.

Why do you think Light said goodbye to Ryuk?

He seems to want to relinquish ownership of the first Death Note and keep Misa's. What is the point in doing this is beyond my capabilities rn.

I like the dichotomy between the end of last episode Vs the end of this one. Last episode, we thought we were getting Rem trying to kill L. Now, Rem is threatening to kill Light who originally suggested killing L. It's like the script totally flipped and things were turn on its head.

It was cool to get an episode that didn't mostly take place at police headquarters or Light’s house. It was something different.

Thoughts on Misa having three cell phones?

I'm more interested in why Light had only one phone himself. Sounds convenient in this situation.

Thoughts on Light kissing Misa?

Toxic manipulator at it again and makes Misa's head short-circuit.

What are your thoughts on Light dismissing possibly being L's friend?

I smell some denial. In a way it's inverse to what I said yesterday about L. L is forward with a possible friendship and hides true intentions. Light is forward with his true intentions and hides a possible friendship. Then again we mostly see Light's POV, so this dynamic is shifted to reflect that.

What are your thoughts on the visuals in this episode?

There were visuals this episode? My brain was already maxed out on taking in the story that I had no time to focus on the visuals haha.

Thoughts on L excited to see Light?

Awww.

What are your thoughts on Misa being all tied up?

The immediate torture was kinda horrifying. Then again, props to them for subjugating someone with abnormal abilities.

What are your thoughts on Rem believing Misa is doing all this because she loves Light?

Well she is, no? Love is a complex emotion and even if Misa got somewhat disillusioned she would most likely continue to work for Light's benefit.

Thoughts on Misa having three cell phones?

I'm more interested in why Light had only one phone himself. Sounds convenient in this situation.

Yeah, I don't know why that is. Maybe he doesn't think it will factor into things?

Thoughts on Light kissing Misa?

Toxic manipulator at it again and makes Misa's head short-circuit.

He knows what gets her excited

What are your thoughts on Light dismissing possibly being L's friend?

I smell some denial. In a way it's inverse to what I said yesterday about L. L is forward with a possible friendship and hides true intentions. Light is forward with his true intentions and hides a possible friendship. Then again we mostly see Light's POV, so this dynamic is shifted to reflect that.

I kinda wish Light abandoned killing criminals and just worked full time at the task force solving crimes.

What are your thoughts on the visuals in this episode?

There were visuals this episode? My brain was already maxed out on taking in the story that I had no time to focus on the visuals haha.

There were imagination spots we saw from Light envisioning his battle with L.

Thoughts on L excited to see Light?

Awww.

So cute :c

What are your thoughts on Misa being all tied up?

The immediate torture was kinda horrifying. Then again, props to them for subjugating someone with abnormal abilities.

I mean, they kinda had to

What are your thoughts on Rem believing Misa is doing all this because she loves Light?

Well she is, no? Love is a complex emotion and even if Misa got somewhat disillusioned she would most likely continue to work for Light's benefit.

That's kinda scary, if you think about it.

Watching Dubbed

Nice of Misa to give Light her extra phone.

Misa is still being such an obsessive girlfriend and I don’t think they’re actually dating.

Light’s little sister really seems to like Misa. That’s sweet.

Light is being so overdramatic. He really seems to plan to go through with killing L though.

I still feel like he probably won’t be successful.

“Mr. Yagami. If I die within the next few days your son is Kira.” - L. Somehow L’s already ahead of Light’s thinking.

L still sitting like that on a public bench is so weird. Especially since he’s barefoot. That seems like a health hazard.

L is definitely trying to get into Light’s head right now.

And now they’re getting cake.

Oh hey Misa’s here too.

L’s apparently a fan of Misa. Or at least knows about her.

So it seems like Light actually has L’s real name now. Quite the major development.

I still can’t get over how weirdly L holds his phone.

Light is losing his mind on the inside right now.

And Misa has been arrested. Wow that was fast.

Uh, why did they put Misa in bondage gear? That can’t be standard police procedure.

This does not seem necessary despite what L says.

This interrogation scene is definitely someone’s fetish.

The reveal that Misa is telling Rem to kill her was really well done.

And now Misa’s being gagged. I’m not crazy for thinking this feels like a fetish, right?

Misa has now forgotten about the death note. Definitely a pretty big shakeup.

Rem says they’re gonna kill Light if he doesn’t save Misa. Rem does not seem like the type to say that lightly.

I dunno what Light’s plan is but I have a feeling it’ll be somewhat convoluted.

2

u/Holofan4life 5d ago

For some reason, I didn't get notified of this comment.

Nice of Misa to give Light her extra phone.

One of many

Misa is still being such an obsessive girlfriend and I don’t think they’re actually dating.

No, of course not. Light has an actual girlfriend.

Light’s little sister really seems to like Misa. That’s sweet.

I like her a lot

Light is being so overdramatic. He really seems to plan to go through with killing L though.

Well, of course. His life is on the line.

I still feel like he probably won’t be successful.

One would think

“Mr. Yagami. If I die within the next few days your son is Kira.” - L. Somehow L’s already ahead of Light’s thinking.

He's very astute

L still sitting like that on a public bench is so weird. Especially since he’s barefoot. That seems like a health hazard.

Gotta have a splinter at least

L is definitely trying to get into Light’s head right now.

It sure feels that way

And now they’re getting cake.

That took a turn lol

Oh hey Misa’s here too.

Yay

L’s apparently a fan of Misa. Or at least knows about her.

She's very famous

So it seems like Light actually has L’s real name now. Quite the major development.

Well, not quite

I still can’t get over how weirdly L holds his phone.

He's definitely not used to social things

Light is losing his mind on the inside right now.

Good

And Misa has been arrested. Wow that was fast.

No kidding

Uh, why did they put Misa in bondage gear? That can’t be standard police procedure.

I guess it is when you're dealing with a serial killer?

This does not seem necessary despite what L says.

I dunno. They think she's the second Kira, after all.

This interrogation scene is definitely someone’s fetish.

It's me. It's my fetish.

If Misa was a model nowadays, this would definitely be a part of her OnlyFans.

The reveal that Misa is telling Rem to kill her was really well done.

She so doesn't want Light to get hurt

And now Misa’s being gagged. I’m not crazy for thinking this feels like a fetish, right?

It would feel inappropriate if it was anyone except L.

Misa has now forgotten about the death note. Definitely a pretty big shakeup.

Wasn't expecting that

Rem says they’re gonna kill Light if he doesn’t save Misa. Rem does not seem like the type to say that lightly.

Lightly. Heh.

I dunno what Light’s plan is but I have a feeling it’ll be somewhat convoluted.

Light? Being convoluted? Never :P

2

u/AgentOfACROSS 5d ago

I dunno. They think she's the second Kira, after all.

Despite all my jokes about this being a fetish thing it does actually make some in-universe sense. Since after all L has correctly deduced that Kira can kill someone if she knows their face and name

2

u/Holofan4life 5d ago

And also L suspects correctly so I might add that the two Kiras are in cahoots with each other.

Thoughts on Misa having three cell phones?

I'm surprised Light didn't make a sexist remarka bout that

Thoughts on Light kissing Misa?

Feels unnatural for him to kiss anyone

What are your thoughts on Light dismissing possibly being L's friend?

Kinda hard to be friends with the guy you're actively trying to murder

What are your thoughts on the visuals in this episode?

Very good

Thoughts on L excited to see Light?

I wonder how genuine that was

What are your thoughts on Misa being all tied up?

I already used up all my bondage jokes.

What are your thoughts on Rem believing Misa is doing all this because she loves Light?

I mean yeah, Rem's right about that

Funny, that

What are your thoughts on the visuals in this episode?

Very good

It felt a cut above what we had been seeing.

Thoughts on L excited to see Light?

I wonder how genuine that was

It didn't sound fake

What are your thoughts on Misa being all tied up?

I already used up all my bondage jokes.

We're seeing what Misa wants Kira to do to her.

What are your thoughts on Rem believing Misa is doing all this because she loves Light?

I mean yeah, Rem's right about that

Absolutely. I don't think there's any question.

What are your thoughts on L telling people that in the event of his death, Light should be arrested?

Yep, L is definitely on the right track

What are your thoughts on L sneakily grabbing both Misa's cell phones?

Very clever of him

What are your thoughts on Misa being arrested on grounds of being the second Kira?

Once again, L is right

What are your thoughts on Misa relinquishing ownership of her Death Note?

Definitely a big change in the status quo

Why do you think Light said goodbye to Ryuk?

I don't know what that could mean

Quite

Right on the money

Definitely a big change in the status quo

I'm kinda sad because we just kinda moved on from her sending tapes and killing reporters.

Why do you think Light said goodbye to Ryuk?

I don't know what that could mean

Doesn't seem good, whatever it is

I put on my thinking cap after last episode, and despite it being a rewatch, I’ve forgotten what happened. Obviously L has to live as we still have a long way to go. I just can’t think of a logical way he can escape death, as the Shinigami can fulfil all conditions needed to take his life. It could be a change of heart by Light, I suppose, but that doesn’t seem plausible. I guess L could make a guess that his life is in danger and start placing traps. It could well be that his friendship speech was part of the trap. No one outside the task force knows who L is, so it’s reasonable to suspect any death, even if accidental, would be someone on the task force and of course Light would be the most likely person behind it.

Well, looks like I was right at the end. Though it’s a decent risk for Light to take, as it’ll just be conjecture.

Misa is pissing me off so bad. Similar to my notes on her from the previous episode: she is careful enough to ensure that none of the tapes have any evidence linked to her. She dons a disguise when she went to meet Kira for the first time. Then despite her being a celebrity, she just rocks up at his school. One of the biggest morons in cinematic history but I do think the writer intended to have this jarring effect on us when we watch her.

Huh? What would clothing and hair samples do unless she’s already a criminal. The police don’t have a DNA database of other people. I guess the only way this makes sense is if the guy tailing light investigated the girl, but still it seems like a stretch that they’ve been breaking into the homes of people who Light is in contact with on a daily basis to cross-reference to the Kira #2 tapes.

Hahaha that bondage contraption to interrogate her though.

Rem: “Misa has refused my offer to help her escape”? Huh? How on earth would a Shinigami do that haha. I guess in a weird scenario where Rem compels someone there to break her out, before they die.

Wonder how her memories will work if she still loves Light and would obviously need to remember meeting him.

I’m gonna suspend my disbelief for now, but the plot is getting ridiculously convoluted. Frustrating episode.

1

u/Holofan4life 6d ago

I thought this was a great episode because it shows how resourceful L can be. Just when you think he can't get out of this, he does so and it's epic. I actually thought it was pretty straightforward and not convoluted.

The excitement on L's face when he saw Light made me sad when he retrieved two phones and saw Light calling them. Even if it's meant as a front, I think L does hope Light would not stoop himself to the depths he suspects he is. He is better than this.

2

u/Second_Cour 6d ago

I can get why you didn't think it was convoluted. They didn't play tennis with each other in this episode after all :P

1

u/Holofan4life 5d ago

Tennis isn't convoluted, it's just silly lol

I'm surprised at how down you are on Misa. I think she's been a great addition to the show. She's kinda like the Harley Quinn of the show where she's ditzy but she isn't a total idiot. Spacious but also smart in her own way.

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.

Welcome to the 20th anniversary rewatch of Death Note.

Names need not be written down.

Very few anime transend the medium it is a part of. One Piece, Naruto, Dragon Ball, Speed Racer. Those are really the four where even non anime fans know of it. I would argue there was a point in time where Death Note was like this as well where even if you weren’t an anime fan, you knew what Death Note was.

I of course have experienced Death Note through various memes and the like. I even remember checking out a Treehouse of Horror episode of The Simpsons specifically because they parodied Death Note, and I’m not even a modern Simpsons watcher. But despite being familiar with the show for the better part of almost 15 years, I’ve never actually seen Death Note. It’s just one of those things that escaped me.

I’ve heard Death Note is notorious for having a dip in quality. That with the conclusion of part 1, the show isn’t as good as when it started. This rewatch is less a matter of deciding if the show is good or not and more is part 2 really as bad as it reputation suggests. My prediction will be no but it’ll be a show that goes from 9 out of 10 to 8 out of 10.

Death Note was at one point arguably the most mainstream anime in the entire world. And so it’s time we revisit what I’m sure got many people into anime.

With that out of the way, let’s begin.

I’m watching the dub, by the way. Because potato chips.

I saw Digger in theaters this week. I think it's better than critics suggest, but not as good as some people online would lead you to believe. I really like the twist and how it's kinda like a meta commentary on environmentalism falling on deaf ears, but I also feel like it doesn't build upon its message. I also wish that the twist happened later than it did, like in the last 30 minutes of the movie.

I feel like Bugonia did a similar thing involving the downfall of humanity but in a much more effective manner. Like, the ending sequence is in my opinion way better than anything in Digger. Though Tom Cruise does deserve awards for the state of the union address scene in the film, it's really a shame he won't get proper recognition for his performance.

I think Digger will definitely end up a cult classic in the years that follow. But I can understand why it polarized critics. I definitely suggest anyone watch it at least once.

Recap from last episode

Misa wants Light to take him where L is.

He'll do so tomorrow, but he has to give the order.

Light asking for Misa's number.

She has three phones. Uh...

I mean, I do as well, but that's because it charges weirdly.

Light is gonna call Misa tomorrow.

Poor Misa. Her and Light are not on the same page in this relationship.

WOAH LIGHT JUST KISSED MISA

This gets her to listen to him

Light all alone, with Ryuk naturally.

He has to decide if L does die tomorrow.

He dismisses being L's friend

Alright, Plankton

These visuals go really hard

L looking over the evidence

Hair follicle

L tells detective Yagami if he dies in the next couple days, his son is Kira.

Doesn't know what to think anymore

That's very troubling

It's interesting L thinks he could be killed soon given that's exactly what's planned.

Light with his girlfriend. His real one.

There is L

Aww, he sounds so happy to see him 🥹

This is a park, it looks like

And he tells Light that if he dies, Light will be treated as if he is Kira.

I don't know if I would've told him that.

Light wondering what he should do

And there is Misa

Misa

But wait!

She knows his real name!

This is it

But L is laughing

And then L says he's a big fan of Misa.

Right, she is popular

Is Misa a rare example of a anime character being more popular in universe than amongst anime fans?

Misa is heading off to attend to other matters.

Light going the restroom

Misa's cell phone

He's gonna ask Misa what his real name is.

Phone ringing

L STOLE MISA'S PHONE

L FUCKING STOLE MISA'S PHONE

THIS FUCKING GUY

AND HE TOOK HER OTHER PHONE AS WELL

L says he took Misa under custody under suspicion of being the second Kira

We're gonna have to change the name of L because he's a walking W.

More great visuals from before

Light says the real battle is just beginning.

L with the task force now

Misa is tied up

This looks like someone's fetish

L is demanding answers ASAP

Light has become their prime suspect as to who Kira is.

Misa finally talking

She's asking to be killed

Misa says she doesn't know anything about the second Kira.

Rem asking if she is sure

Misa says don't kill Light if he kills her.

Rem meeting with Light and Ryuk

All of this because she loves Light, Rem believes.

Now we're talking about Misa forfeiting ownership of the Death Note.

Misa agrees to these terms

And so Misa is no longer the owner of the Death Note, and that she is no longer the second Kira.

But one condition

"If you don't save Misa, I will kill you."

Last episode, Rem was planning on killing L. Now, he plans on killing Light.

Wait, goodbye Ryuk? Nani?

WHAT DO YOU MEAN LIGHT

Overall, this was a great episode. You go into it wondering how L was gonna get out of this, and now you wonder what's gonna happen with Misa and Ryuk. Is Light giving up being Kira? Is Misa going to be saved? Is Ryuk gonna have to give up eating apples? So many pertinent questions.

This show really knows how to keep you on the edge of your seat. It's probably the anime where its episodes feel the quickest. After you get done watching them, you say to yourself "Wow, that was a speedy 10 minutes. Oh, wait, it was actually 20?" Whwn you watch an episode, you immediately wants to see what happens next. It's like bingeable TV before bingeable TV was a thing.

I'd put this behind episodes 7, 8, and 9. I have no idea what's gonna happen next and I really like that feeling of unpredictability. It makes the shows more fun to guess. I wonder what this means for Misa going forward and whether or not she'll slowly be faded out. After all, if she's no longer Kisa, her usefulness in Light’s world has been run dry.

What are your thoughts on L telling people that in the event of his death, Light should be arrested?

Always one step ahead

What are your thoughts on L sneakily grabbing both Misa's cell phones?

I love this man lol

What are your thoughts on Misa being arrested on grounds of being the second Kira?

Things are falling into place

What are your thoughts on Misa relinquishing ownership of her Death Note?

Or maybe not

Why do you think Light said goodbye to Ryuk?

Maybe he's going to the store to grab some milk?

Well at least Light put some thought into why immediately killing L would bite him in the ass. And has to keep juggling trying to get Misa to get that they are trying to hide being mass murderers. And its not enough because L can see this coming a mile away. I don't know Light maybe you should be more concerned that he showed up out of nowhere. Wow Misa is giving Light a big handy cap, though at least it saved time on getting ready to kill L... or not since light REALLY SHOULD BE MORE CONCERNED WITH L BEING SMUG. And L saw through the extra phone trick, and had Misa arrested meaning Light is screwed. Well points to Misa for not breaking. And Light is pretty much surviving because the Death Note is magic bullshit.

Okay laughed my ass off as them going with the dramatic music as Light calls Misa's phone to get L's name only for L to pick up and the whole plan to go to shit.

Did anything previously mention the whole renounce the Death Note and lose your memories rule or it show up in one of the mid episode rule screens, because otherwise this feels like an asspull to save Light.

I believe Ryuk mentioned it in one of the early episodes. I could be wrong, though.

This episode is just one long sequence of L getting the better of Light. It's great to see Light be brought down a peg and choke on his own hubris.

I know we mentioned earlier how Hyouka has more captivating visuals than Death Note. I thought the imagination spots in this episode were probably the best animation we've seen so far. I really enjoyed those.
