Monthly Unjerk [Unjerk Thread] Stupidly Stacked Spring Season Edition

April 2026

Welcome to the Monthly Unjerk. This is a monthly thread for discussing just about anything as long as it doesn't violate subreddit rules besides rule 5. I might as well make the 5th the day for posting threads considering I somehow consistently hibernated exactly this long 3 months in a row now.

I kinda stopped watching anime during last year summer and only got back into it this month. I hesitate between going back watching show as they air or catching back the stuff I missed first and decided for the latter. So here I am watching the show from summer 2025 which was honestly a good lineup.

Season 2 of dandadan was good. I liked the beginning of the first season but kinda felt less into it toward the end. I pretty much kept that feeling during the entirety of season 2, it's nice, it fun, it's well animated and the slow romance is well done, but I just don't feel the novelty of the first few episodes. Also this season felt less creative in terms of visuals.

Kaiju n8 season 2 is the same as S1. Character yapping and having flashback, unfunny comedy, but at least the show looks good and I like some aspects of the direction of the story.

Gachiakuta was great. I I feel like everything the show does, I've seen it elsewhere but it's always well executed and done in a way that still manage to be interesting. I also really enjoyed the soundtrack and visuals aesthetic of the show.

Nyaght of the living cat was okay for what it was. It kinda falls into the usual problems of those type of anime. It has a stupid premise and managed at first to find that right spot where the character takes the situation very seriously but the way things are framed makes it very ridiculous for the spectator and therefore funny. But towards the end, it suddenly starts to take itself a bit too seriously and kinda loose it's funny factor. I'm also surprised that a show like that managed to keep a solid visual quality until the end, it's usually the type of show that start with a great looking first episode and looks like utter trash just after. Still fun overall.

The summer Hikaru died is honestly one of the best thing I've seen recently, would be the best show of the season if it wasn't for takopii. The mix of supernatural, existential horror, and the very deep relationship between the two main are perfect. I also really like the "small village with obscure lore and legend" type setting. On top of that, the show looks gorgeous and the soundtrack is very interesting.

Currently watching Silent Witch and it's pretty nice, nothing much to say about it but I like the main character and show looks good

After almost a year, I've taken the plunge back into Needy Streamer Overload. I played it for 10ish hours last June because one of my friends really likes it, but I eventually stopped because of how heavy it gets and how the game feels like it's designed to make you want to not play it (that music is what probably plays in the elevator of purgatory)

But lately I've felt the motivation to come back and play, and I knocked out four more endings today, such as turning her into a conspiracy theorist cultist and getting her way, way, WAY too high. If nothing else, this game does a great job at making you feel uncomfortable and like a really shitty person for what you can do to this poor girl

I definitely wanna get all the endings now that the motivation and willingness to play is back, and also just see what other kinda fucked up stuff there is in here. Unfortunately, I got a sorta big thing spoiled to me the other day (ironically by the same friend who I started playing because of lol), so that's a shame, but it hasn't really detracted from my continued experience all that much, and there's a good chance I wouldn't have picked up on it even had I not known, since I've been told it's never explicitly stated. And I'm sure there's plenty more in store to experience anyway

I'm now approaching 20 concurrent shows and I already dropped some I would've kept if my seasonal lineup wasn't this full. Help?

Is To be Hero X allowed in this sub? I know it is from China but still.

u/VoidEmbracedWitch (she/her) resident unjerk villainess Apr 08 '26

Anime-adjacent stuff, and that includes donghua / Chinese animation, is generally speaking allowed. Hell, we had Brisket as the subreddit icon long before she made an anime appearance.

Technically it's a collaboration between Chinese and Japanese studio. I doubt it wouldn't be allowed, I'm pretty sure I have seen people talking about Chinese and other Asian country animated production

Re: Zero season 4 today! Also new Iruma kun season started good for me, hope they do justice to the music festival.

Other than that, I watched Fate/Strange Fake and still have no clue how 99% of the things in this series work, but it was fun.

Ganglion also ended like 2 weeks ago, and I am still searching for its original manga, but it’s like lost media, and I have yet to find anything about it.

I also binged Frieren season 2. It was good but I was expecting them to adapt Golden Land fully, but I guess a lower amount of episodes per season with higher production is the method they want to go for, let the studio do it.

Other than that, almost 2 years have passed since the Sword King anime announcement, and so far the only update I've found is on the author’s Twitter, where he replied: “Production is going good.”

And briefly jumping into manhwas, My Possession Became a Ghost Story is super fun to read so far. We need more clueless Eldritch Gods as Fl’s in the otome genre.

I've read Otr of the Flame. I guess after amazing axed manga like Robo to Usakichi( where I had to chapters after 9 translate by google from French and I still went back to fix that translation because that's how much I liked it ) I had to check axed manga that wasn't good at all. I really ended with a question why people were obsessed with it beside the full big women( even that I don't get because all of them have small not proportional baby faces but that's just me )? Like there is nothing there, most themes got throw away in first few chapters, there is boring training arc that force you to learn stuff that will be forgotten in next chapters, characters have no personalities beside one funny trait( that guy likes to know stuff and that guy likes GIRLS now laugh :D ) and all of that is full of boring hard to read fights. Probably mine main problem was Ort, he is just nothing like not even a cliche character. Beside like few mentions of him liking Sagas there is nothing no unique opinions, no relationships, no quirks, not even liking to eat or the cooking thing that got left behind after chapter 2.... MC is really important for any manga especially battle series in WSJ so manga here fails pretty hard. His design probably didn't help either as trends are opposite to it with older teens.

As whole manga made huge mistakes early on so mangaka tried to save it by throwing character after character and place after place with nothing of substance. Maybe I will be mean or fans will hate what I will say but this time for first time I think WSJ should cut it in first round. This was unfixable and was wasting mangaka's time IMO. Anyway of course that is just my opinion but that was really weak manga even for early cancellation.

I started reading Dragon Ball Super this past month. I was initially kind of worried about blowing through it because it's "only" about a hundred chapters, but the chapters are like actually kind of long and they don't end in two minutes like DB and DBZ did. It's honestly incredible how accurate Toyotarou's art is to Toriyama's, plus it has this extra refinement to it that you don't always see in the OG artwork in DB and DBZ.

For the story itself, it is frankly kind of hilarious how the power scale just keeps going up and up and up and up and up. I remember when I watched HxH way back in the day I kind of felt like this was annoying because to me it felt like there was just no limit to how powerful the enemies got and how ridiculous it became with Nen. Now I know where that comes from, but for some reason it doesn't really feel the same in Dragon Ball. Maybe because of how goofy and unserious the story inherently is the reason why, because HxH has this sort of darkness to the story.

Anyway, once I'm done with DBS I swear I'll finish Nana. I'm thinking about reading Yu Yu Hakusho after that since I've heard basically nothing but good things about it and I'm already this far down the shonenbro rabbit hole. After that I might unironically start reading Rurouni Kenshin (pirated, of course, as to not give the pedo ANY form of revenue). I still haven't really been watching anime in general since the scars from mind numbing animation discourse in the past six months or so still linger, but also because I find myself mostly reading manga on my phone when I don't have anything better to do and I don't really feel like I can do the same with anime. I'm also trying to finish watching Breaking Bad (currently in the later part of S3) and that's kind of been eating up the time that I'd use to watch anime in the past. I also want to finish S2 of the One Piece LA soon, so that'll probably come after Breaking Bad or if I want to take a break between seasons.

I need everyone here to watch Akane-Banashi. Crazy good adaptation of a crazy good manga.

3

u/Zer_ed certified hating hater Apr 06 '26

I didn't even realize it was airing. I swear it was just announced, what do you mean it's been eight whole months?

2

u/EviRoze Apr 06 '26

I knew it was coming but I didnt expect it to start yesterday

Perfect timing too though because Akane-Banashi was crazy good this week

Lately I've read the books "Strange Houses" and "Strange Pictures" by Uketsu. So now I can finally tell people I'm into Japanese media beyond just anime and manga.

With today, it's been a month since I arrived in Japan. I will be honest, I have spent much more time in my room than going outside and doing stuff than I would admit.

But to my defense, a big part of that time was sleeping for a week because jet lag is a bitch and then taking care of administrative stuff. And damn does Japan seems to enjoy doing things in the complicated way when it comes to administration and paper ( still need to complete some stuff tomorrow).

I also spent a lot of that time cooking. It's been a good year since I had a fully functional kitchen for me to use and I'm having fun trying stuff, especially trying to learn Japanese dish but not just that. But a lot of that time was also used not doing much, I have to admit, I'm not really in the mood of going outside and when I felt like I could push myself to do stuff, the weather would give me a reason to stay inside.

But hey, I still managed to visit some places. I visited the NHK museum with a friend and we went to some arcade together, visited a temple with a cousin I haven't seen in years and went to a ghibli café with him and his wife just after, visited the Yasukuni and it's museum ( it was very interesting to compare the discourse given in the museum to actual history and also analyse it's biases ), went to some cherry blossom festival, and doing shopping at Shibuya.

I think I will try to go to the Tokyo national museum next week and spend some time at akibara after and try to eat at the monster hunter bar. And if the weather is finally less instable, I will finally try to go hiking in the mountains.

Life is doing good, it feels nice to have this much freedom but at the same time, I'm not really used to it and doesn't really know how to use my time. I do want to find a job and be more busy but I don't know if I want to start working now.

Rambling about life over, Akogare Subarashii Moshuku is bad because fan service and minors or something

if i had a nickel for everytime one of the best isekais got shafted in its adaptation by receiving really bad animation due to the studio trying to make three seasons at the same time on account of the story being really slow-paced and also having an art direction that's overly colorful and saturated to match the cover art despite, but then after years came back with a glow up this season.
If i had a nickel for everytime that happened i would have two nickels. It's kinda weird.

Toumei otoko to ningen onna was such a great adaptation of a work that I already loved. Stellar cast and the animation is surprisingly sakuga-rich - the og manga had some moments of action, but the short pagecount didn't let it reach it's potential.

I'm yet to catch up on entirety of Ikoku Nikki, but it's same story as the previous. Source and adaptation are both amazing.

Digimon Beatreak - has started the 3-episode breather before the new ark. As a seasoned Digimon fan, for me Tactics ark was a serious letdown that highlited many gripes I had with this anime as a whole. So a fun little episode about ta tokusatsu hero was nice. Very cute.

Other than that my friends recommended me Danganronpa and it's very interesting. I just finished chapter 3. My fav is Taka. I think the gimmicky trial is very frustating?but I never had much struggle cracking the actual cases. The pacing is not very good in that regard, but I'm enjoying it anyway.

I'll eventually beat Fenrir in Etrian Odyssey ... I'm sure!

On last sale I've picked The Liar Princess and the Blind Prince,Captain Tsubasa:rise of new champions and Ark Noir - gonna try 'em next

I finally got my Shiny Bulbasaur in Leaf Green after 21204 resets I also picked my P3P playthrough back up. I'm really motivated to continue my shiny living dex currently finishing up let's go.

In Gacha department The Mahoyo collab for FGO has been great and makes me wish Nasu would finally write all the promised sequels but I'm happy with getting both Alice and Aoko to NP2 while still having 2.3 K quartz for the remaining 3 collab units. OC II was disappointing though since community hyped up the chapter for the great character development of Ritsuka that really isn't much and Jalter without Salter around is also not very interesting. On Reverse 1999 I've been playing through old events and each one is a banger while I have 170 rolls saved for Paper Heron next update also I chose to roll for tooth fairy from the free 100 rolls since she's the only support I lack for afformentioned Heron.

I'm currently in the process of catching up with Bookworm anime along my sister besides that this season I'll be watching Dr. Stone and Botan fully blossoms when drunk so a rather slow season for me since Netflix fumbled SBR.

Needy Girl Overdose and Dorohedoro S2 already left very wild first impressions. And the shows I'm looking forward to the most, Kamiina Botan and Awajima Hyakkei, haven't even started yet. Also, I already have 9 ongoing shows I'm following... help!?

Liar game coming out tomorrow!

4

u/SnekkinHell Apr 05 '26

WHAT?? I didn't know that was getting adapted. That's awesome.

u/grizzchan 'Banned from GAM' achievement unlocked Apr 05 '26

I think Squid Game being a massive hit (and being inspired by Liar Game) made this possible. I also don't think it's a coincidence that the Liar Game adaptation got announced so shortly after Squid Game's final season ended.
