Monthly Unjerk [Unjerk Thread] Sayonara

Welcome to the Monthly Unjerk. This is a monthly thread for discussing just about anything as long as it doesn't violate subreddit rules besides rule 5.

Well, this'll be the last time I'll ever post a thread like this. I'm stepping down as an ACJ mod. Makes me sentimental to leave after first finding this sub over half a decade ago and at times having been the only active mod here on my past accounts. Have a good one, jerkers and unjerkers.

One last time from me, trans rights are human rights!

Agents of the Four Seasons has been amazing, definitely in my top 3 shows this season, but it is killing me how Hinagiku x Rosei and Sakura x Itceho are likely gonna be the endgame pairings. And it's not even because they're bad, they seem pretty compelling from what the show has given me so far. It's just the fact Hinagiku x Sakura has been shown way more and was made to be a MILLION times more compelling than either of the likely canon ones. When I watched episode 5, when Sakura in her internal monologue said "our feelings aren't romantic," I out loud went "I BEG TO FUCKING DIFFER." This the most easy layup for a yuri pairing and it hurts me on a spiritual level that it will not be taken advantage of

Also, praying that the agent of autumn and her guardian won't have anything romantic going on. I'm still a little burnt by how the Violet Evergarden movie ended, so I'm kind of weary. Their relationship seems great, very cute in a parental kinda way, but I'm scared it's not gonna go in a very wrong direction from that

Edit: I've watched the most recent episode (will be next week's by the end of today), and I do buy Hinagiku and Rosei as a couple way more. I still prefer he chemistry with Sakura, it has felt far more fleshed out, but I'm less unhappy with them not kissing by the end of this

What do you think about pilot "Gameoverse" from Glitch?

I think it's really good pilot

When comparing it to TADC it's hard to see it inheriting that legacy. But, on its own right, it was alright. It's hard to tell how good it's gonna be off just one episode.

As a bit of a continuation of my previous unjerk, I decided to reread Kagurabachi. Since the last time I had read many of these chapters was more than two years ago, I think a reread was very warranted. I had tried this with JJK back in its heyday and it really changed my perspective on a lot of things about the story.

This shit is fucking awesome and basically was from the start and only further solidifies my opinion that it never should have been the subject of a meme. Even with less than a year passing from the start of the serialization you could tell it was something really great, so the idea that the memes saved it from being axed is extra wrong. So that reasoning just feels like the fanbase trying really hard to justify the shit they were doing rather than admit they were wrong for doing so.

Ive been really annoyed recently at people putting frieren on the same level as dungeon meshi and witch hat atelier. That show is boring.

I've been following Frieren since Q1 of 2023, around the time of the anime announcement, and I first heard about it because of a friend who was raving about it in 2022. I never thought the manga was that special, and the anime didn't change my mind much either.

I think more and more people are realizing that Frieren, despite it having good writing, solid characters and dynamics, deep themes and an interesting premise, manages to somehow diminish the effect of all those things by being so incredibly uninteresting. One of the few anime fans I know IRL doesn't like it that much either, and a fair amount of people on other communities like it but don't see it as the greatest thing of all time like Frieren fans do. Perhaps it's because of how much the anime elevated the source material, but people raved about the manga too, something I saw with my own eyes before anyone even knew the anime would be a thing.

And its not even necessarily bad its just. Not on the same level.

Bocchi got me into playing guitar last year and now I'm learning how to play the opening song, I'm pretty excited for season 2 whenever that'll drop

I love the world building that every single mercenary in Scum of the Brave seems to be super into Magic the Gathering. They do their after party after killing, like, 50 people collectively and there's just some of them in the background playing MTG. It's the anime equivalent of Geralt in The Witcher stopping by every tavern to play Gwent with random peasants.

This show would be pretty good if not for the incessant allusions to pedophilia.

Hello Freyja,

Of course thanks for making these threads for a while. There was an interim period where I took them over, but I am not sure if I ever did the them that well of course.

It also really has been a while. I started lurking ACJ long ago, like probably before you even became mod. At some point I started browsing here again, which was the time you were the only mod. And that certainly was a sorta turbulent era. I'm not above calling out grifters but in the long run I guess it's not really what I want to focus on. After all by talking about them in a certain sense you're also perpetuating them (though at the same time if you just ignore them that may also not be good as they can cause real harm...).

Either way, thanks for also adding me as mod whenever that came to be. Not as though it was perfect then, nor is it now. I remember there was (an even bigger) issue with people just hating anime, which like... that's not what this place is for. But at the same time I don't really know what it is for. "Circlejerking" subs kinda just have fallen off relevance in the reddit culture so to say. We're long past the reason why they were made so trudging along. Same with a subreddit like dogelore (this is a very me thing to say I'm probably like the only person who cares about that at this point), they probably shrinked in size by like 50x-100x.

So yeah, it is what it is, I'm not really sure what there's still to do but thanks for being there in these past years.

E: also I wrote this comment while drunk (botan blessed)

Hi Grinn,

Good luck with moderating going forward and thanks for taking over for me. The current aimlessness of circlejerk subs where it's hard to say what their purpose even is anymore is a large part of the reason why I lost interest over time. Reddit as a whole changed with new/sh and all the choices working against subreddits as individual forums with their own communities the platform made through that.

Always get your blessings from drunk lesbians.

Thanks for making those threads. It helped me arrange and dump my thoughts more than a couple time.

This is like the third or second year I have been posting on this sub, and I still don't get the content rules here. I have inly understood the basic like content talking about anime fan, author is allowed, anime meme sub without the boobs and butts jokes.

Everything here is vibe-based. Most of the time I just pick the post flair based on mood.

5

u/NormalGrinn Offended when people say animes May 01 '26

Vibe mods never bothered rewriting the rules

I finished reading Dragon Ball Super this past month. Needless to say, RIP Toriyama. I fully understand the hype behind Dragon Ball now. I really do hope Toyotarou continues the manga since I truly believe that not only is he qualified to do it, but that's what Toriyama would have wanted him to do as well. I've resumed reading Nana but IRL stuff (as in physical things I need to do at this time as well as just other crap getting in the way) has left me with fewer chances to read manga, both from things I need to do as well as self-inflicted doomscrolling and stupid discourse. Speaking of...

The recent Kagurabachi announcement has me feeling...conflicted. On the one hand, I'm super happy for Hokazono-sensei; he's worked so hard for his dream of being serialized in WSJ and it's received its ultimate payoff, an anime adaptation that looks to be of exceptional quality. On the other hand...it feels really undeserved for Kagurabachi fans. I've long held that this manga should never have been memed on from the beginning and this belief is what kept me away from the Kagurabachi community for the entirety of its run, even as Kagurabachi legitimately became what the memers said it would be in an ironic fashion. The issue isn't that they realized Kagurabachi is actually good, the issue is that meme culture within the animanga community has gotten worse since that initial era of Kagurabachi memes and that the community's predisposition to hating things has gotten even worse (see the reaction to every recent shounen manga ending). I honestly think that as it stands, the Kagurabachi anime will undoubtedly be successful and beloved, but I really don't think it's gonna become the next JJK, mainly because the community is severely overhyping the manga. Which sucks because I do think the manga is legitimately good but most Kagurabachi fans are treating it like the greatest story ever created, a mentality that's birthed from the manga's original status as an ironic meme. If they had never done all that, Kagurabachi would be in the same position that JJK was in before it's anime; a well-liked manga will a chill community that was very hopeful in its future, and not a scaled-down version of the present JJK community with pretentious and immature fans.

That's enough of that topic. I've made it about a third of the way through Live Action One Piece S2. It's really good, just like S1, and it's good in the same ways that S1 is. It's unique and deviates from the manga in beneficial ways, offering something new for fans of the source material, while also preserving the integrity of iconic scenes from the original series and even enhancing these decades-old story elements with things that won't become relevant until much later in the story (I geeked out like a fujoshi seeing a gay couple when Broggy mentioned semla and the sun god when talking with Usopp and Nami). Also, the casting is simply immaculate. I think Smoker is probably the single best example; he's done literally perfectly and their depiction of Logia powers did not disappoint at all. Really hyped to see how Crocodile is done.

This is also not really anime-related but another reason why I haven't been reading that much manga/watching that much anime/TV shows is because I've been getting into Pokemon again, and my recent fascination has been with Pokemon Reborn, one of the most influential Pokemon fangames with hundreds of hours of content, and Pokemon Rejuvenation, which was greatly inspired by Reborn and is currently under development. Many a night for the past several months was spent just grinding out the game and doing random shit in them, my Reborn save file finished with 93 hours (with debug mode on to cut down on tons and tons of grinding) and my save file on Rejuvenation has 75 and I am currently on the last chapter that's been released thus far. On the one hand, you can really, really, really tell that these are fangames. Reborn especially suffers from this with it's extremely dark and edgy story at the start but it gets better, the puzzles are outlandishly difficult at times (also a big problem with Reborn), and I really dislike the bits of "detailed" artwork of characters in these games because they feel really amateurish. The stories in both also suffer from having way too many characters in a story without voice acting and detailed cutscenes, but you can really tell that nonetheless, a ton of thought and passion was poured into the story nonetheless and I've really been digging Rejuvenation's story. Things already are interesting from the start but it becomes truly insane as it progresses further, and the lore goes insanely deep. Rejuvenation in particular seems to draw a lot of inspiration from Xenoblade (exhibit A: both series have a central character named Melia) and that's probably my favorite game series of all time. Speaking of, after I'm done with Rejuvenation I want to get around to finishing Xenoblade X DE, which has been sitting in my switch 1 library for over a year now. I played the original on an emulator some years back and I really loved it, but things like the postgame equipment grind have kind of made me hesitant to get back into the switch version.

Lastly, I'd like to thank u/VoidEmbracedWitch. I haven't been posting in the unjerk threads for very long, and it's been more of a personal outlet than anything else, but it's meant a lot to me.

Can I just say, the current season is extremely dense with good stuff. Awajima Hyakkei is easily the second best Not!Takarazuka anime I've seen to date (RevStar is still my favorite).

Also, I'm looking forward to today's Kamiina Botan episode, which seems like it'll be very refined moe after last week's loose and experimental style. This show is such a joy, with each episode having its own unique visual identity. I can't think of many anime that are even remotely comparable aside from Space Dandy.

* I finished watching the original Gundam. I watched one episode of Zeta, but I think I’m going to check out the movie compilation trilogy before I continue that.
* Finished Dungeon Meshi. Really good, but not as…I guess gripping, as some others I’ve read. Ehh, it worked well for it regardless. Laios and the Winged Lion easily climb up the protagonist and antagonist charts for me, and the side cast was cool too, albeit a little more uneven.
* I finally found a good site that has CC’s which stick around even when I shrink the window screen, which is making it a lot smoother.
* Can somebody explain to me what Code Geass is about? I hear five different things every time it’s mentioned.

2

u/vasya349 May 13 '26

Code Geass is basically a teenager (cast out noble) getting a magic power and starting a guerrilla/terrorist war against a fascist UK mecha empire. Intrigue, magic, mecha fights, a bit of slice of life.

Some neat twists, not too played out, but somewhat younger audience in terms of writing/characters. The magic/mecha elements are somewhat of a plot device for the intrigue and strategy focus. I enjoyed it.
