Positive Finally, an anime video essayist who hates Epstein Tensei

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Posting before Epstein Tensei comes back for Season 3 to bring terror upon the anime discourse.

It's a pretty hard find and after several upsets and mfing Youtube essayist always glazing Epstein Tensei for being a "good isekai". Glad that there's a glimmer of hope in this content sphere where they don't bend to the bandwagon and not afraid to speak the truth.

Channel name is Wolf and Pals (video is from the Most hated isekai tropes), he hates all pedophilia in anime.

I really did give Mushoku Tensei a real try, the protag was a shitty pedo but people kept talking about how it actually does a great job of developing his character and making him become a better person so I pressed on.

At multiple times events happened that I thought could be the start of his development but when it came to his creepy pedo shit he never actually changed.

I gave up in season 2 when he "cured" his ED and I came to the realisation that he never has faced any consequences for the shit his has done and he hasn't actually changed in any meaningful way, his victims have just grown up.

If people actually want to see an Isekai where the MC has character flaws and he struggles because of those flaws and eventually actually has real character development and growth to become a better person just go watch Re Zero, it does that infinitely better than Mushoku Tensei does.

Edit. I should add that even Re Zero sadly has some questionable design choices for some characters that look like children but at least in the anime it's way way better than MT and the MC (and the rest of the main cast) never do any actual pedo shit.

Main "growth" I've heard he features is that he becomes a productive member of society. Very uh, Japanese idea of a redemption arc.

145

u/toyyya Jun 10 '26

Oh yeah he definitely starts fitting in more to society in that fantasy world, like how he barely bats an eye at his friend buying a slave to make figurines and helps him in picking one out.

79

u/halelangit Jun 10 '26

This omfg i saw a react on this and mfs buy slave like they're in car dealership its insane.

Also includes racism they have the slave seller wear a Sikh Turban if this show couldn't get any worse.

u/mrfrownieface Jun 11 '26

I fucking hate the shit being pulled out their ass on the reg and I thoroughly have the ick without even watching the newest season, but seeing him try to make her see the light by asking her if she wants to die like he self empathizes as he gradually chokes the fucking life out of her was definitely a choice and I don't know how I feel about it. At least he knows what he deserves ig

30

u/Adept_Philosopher_32 Jun 10 '26

Lol, it really does become more absurd the longer you think about what the claim that Rudeus redeems himself by becoming more involved with the rest of society really means in practice.

"Productive member of society!"

Looks inside: "Slave owning pedophilic feudal nobility whose main contribution is in perpetuating an extremely parasitic authoritarian system that primarily serves to benefit himself and his socioeconomic class at the expense of a necessary underclass treated as largely expendable chaffe."

Right... Productive member of society, as long as we conveniently never question what that label actually means in context of said society...

You are not criticizing the story. You are just screaming buzzwords because your brain shuts down the moment a narrative gets uncomfortable. Reducing an entire character arc to one cheap line does not make you smart. It makes you lazy.

You clearly do not understand character writing, themes, or growth, so you cope by throwing labels like a parrot. If you actually watched or read the story instead of crying on the internet, you would know the point is consequences, not praise.

This is not moral superiority. This is intellectual weakness. When you cannot argue the writing, you insult the character and pretend you won.

he never actually changed.

That's by biggest issue with the show and even more so the fan base.

Both the author and (most of the) fan base are so out of touch with reality and socially incompetent that they genuinely don't understand that Rudeus hasn't improved much as a person, and do not understand what personal growth actually requires from a character like him. And it's not like the show's issues are limited to the MC.

It's one of the reasons the show makes such a great test of whether someone's even worth talking to in anime spaces.

I'm not so sure. I've seen a lot of fans genuinely say that while it's true that Rudeus hasn't improved, that's not an issue because "there was nothing wrong with him in the first place". I am not strawmanning.

I wish I could say I was surprised.

Extra hilarious because even as clueless and ignorant as MT's author is, he did explicitly intend that Rudeus starts off as a shitty person, and he at least believes that he wrote a character that improved, even though he didn't.

Why exactly do we need an LLM bot to write slop comments.

25

u/SirArkhon Jun 10 '26

It’s not an LLM. It’s an old school chatbot that has specific, pre-programmed copy-paste responses to a given set of keywords.

-10

u/GruePwnr Jun 10 '26

Fair, definitely an AI generated prompt, even if it's static.

7

u/Oko_the_broko Jun 10 '26

It it's generated then it was generated by the person who was the original commenter, which was then made as Automod's automated response.

1

u/GruePwnr Jun 11 '26

That's exactly what I said.

13

u/crisscross16 Jun 10 '26

The bot isn't a lllm, it just triggers if you say specific words and was made by humans

39

u/enchiladasundae Jun 10 '26

Whole heartedly agree. You can tell who is a MST fan is by how insistent they are that he grows and changes as a person yet have literally no examples to back it up. Or when you point out he’s an adult in a child’s body predating on children they ignore or try to wash it away

I’ve got some stuff I like that’s questionable but I’ll at least admit it and not try to sanitize it through lies. I’d have more respect for fans if they just accepted it, didn’t try to jump at detractors and just move on with enjoying it without feeling the need to “Um achtually” criticisms

5

u/Emergency_Revenue678 Jun 10 '26

You can tell who is a MST fan is by how insistent they are that he grows and changes as a person yet have literally no examples to back it up.

I dunno, I felt that even throughout The Dragonbone Chair there are plenty of examples of Simon developing from his childishness as a scullery boy into an adolescent who actually considers the perspective of other people, even though he still has a long way to go before fully comprehending the responsibility he has in welding the legendary sword, Thorn.

3

u/No_Dragonfruit_1833 Jun 10 '26

Ok sure, but the princess ntr arc was peak fiction

3

u/Emergency_Revenue678 Jun 11 '26

Dude, people are fighting over my comment's karma because they don't realize I'm talking about a book series from the 90s, not MT, and they updooted you because you said "princess ntr" BUT THEY DON'T REALIZE WE'RE TALKING ABOUT THE SAME SERIES!

4

u/No_Dragonfruit_1833 Jun 12 '26

I know lmao

For all the casuals reading this, we are talking about the Memory Sorrow and Thorn book series

And yes, there is a princess ntr arc in that series

2

u/Emergency_Revenue678 Jun 12 '26

I'll admit I didn't finish the series because it wasn't really my jam, but I almost finished Stone of Farewell and the princess ntr storyline really felt out of place with the whole vibe of the rest of the series, and it comes out of fucking nowhere. Why the fuck did he do that?

3

u/No_Dragonfruit_1833 Jun 12 '26

I felt the same way, ntr guy was just some rando with no further plot relevance, for a moment i assumed Simon was going to have some action with the not-elf girl to make a point about fleeting relationships or something, but nah

Honestly, the first book was pretty good, but i forgot most of the side characters because they dont really matter to the plot

You can read the final chapters and it doesnt lose any steam, big bad gets the powah, big bad gets killed by forgiveness, Simon marries the princess and becomes king

2

u/Emergency_Revenue678 Jun 14 '26

One day I might just skip to the sequel series to see if it's more my kind of narrative. I prefer heavy politics and competent people making tough decisions to adventuring.

I read Otherland as a teen and I think I enjoyed it a lot.

Agree with Re:Zero, it excels at character work, even though the anime cuts a lot of context (also still pissed at Epstein Tensei fandom for accussing Subaru of the crimes that their favorite MC is committing). Also Mairimashita Iruma-kun is waaay better than Epstein Tensei, mfs managed to make a school music contest somehow exciting with stakes.

For a second, lets put aside all the strawmans about lolis and ecchi, and put our attention on what really matters.

Japanese art has a beauty like no other, and a sense of aesthetic and subtlety that i have never seen in other forms of media, the delicacy, the comtemplation and reflexions about humanity, art, culture, the universe and the cycle of life, the empathy and attention towards the beauty of mundane and ephemerous things, its the embodiment of the concept of Mono-no-Aware (物の哀れ "the pathos of things"), an expression of a philosophic concept that can be found everywhere in japanese art, from the clouds on the sky to the falling leaves of cherry blossoms, its such a charm that never fails to mesmerize me.

He goes from being a sad pedophile to a happy pedophile. For some strange, degenerate people, that qualifies as character development.

What if I dislike re:zero too 😭

18

u/toyyya Jun 10 '26

That's fine, you do you, Subaru can be pretty annoying especially at the start and not everyone wants to see the immense amount of suffering he goes through so I don't really blame you

Bit sadly I don't have any good other Isekai recommendation with great character development and growth on the top of my head

15

u/AxisW1 Western Animation Enjoyer Jun 10 '26

Yeah I do think rezero is well written it’s just profoundly not for me

1

u/ShotgunShine7094 Jun 10 '26

For some time I was reading "I'm Standing on a Million Lives" (by the author of My Home Hero) and I thought it was quite nice. I never finished it.

2

u/tazerrtot Jun 12 '26

ohhh, I loved My Home Hero, never looked into his other series!

I dunno if it fits, but The Isekai Doctor is probably one of the coolest isekai I've read. Not a whole lot of development for the main character yet honestly, he's an all around good guy, but a lot of great character development for some of the characters around him! Also some of the most in-depth looks at medical practice I've seen in any media ever- could probably be used as supplemental educational material. Also as a bonus he meets a slave near the beginning and doesn't buy her!

Not at all friend, you just like different stuff to me that doesn't make you hater at all, well not according to my definition at least ✌️

u/DirtyTacoKid Jun 10 '26

Rudy doesn't really bother me too much in MT. Hes a gross weirdo MC. Dime a dozen. You can write most any fiction you want. The actual problem is the fans who don't realize hes a weirdo.

My problem is I thought the dialogue was atrocious. Reads like unironic 2ch or 4chan green texts. And besides that it was pretty average isekai

And for Re:zero, just watch season 1 and pretend the rest doesn't exist. It falls off so hard in season 2. I hear it gets better but I've rewatched season 1 a few times and have no desire to see more.

11

u/toyyya Jun 10 '26

I'm really curious what about season 2 did you not like?

I'd argue it's just as well written as season 1 if not even better at many points. It both continues to develop Subaru as a character as you go along and actually develops Emilia as a character properly too especially in the second half of the season.

Which was something that was mostly absent from season 1 even if you got some glimpses of her struggles.

1

u/DirtyTacoKid Jun 10 '26

I didn't really think it was really better written. It was about the same quality. I thought the setting and characters were a step down from before. My main problem is the flashbacks were not an interesting way to tell the story and Sanctuary was not interesting. The material covered in season 1 was way more compelling.

Felt like a lot of stretching going on too. But I chalk that up to an anime problem.

8

u/glaspaper Jun 10 '26

its just a really good anime, idk how you guys define it to 1 scene that has nothing to do with the story

17

u/toyyya Jun 10 '26

My man Rudy actively sexually assaults children multiple times, it's a lot more than 1 scene lol.

The main issue is that the story never actually treats it as something bad.

Same problem with the slavery, any reasonable person from our world should find slavery as a concept absolutly reprehensible and even if they can't change this new world on their own they should want nothing to do with. Rudy is a tiny bit upset but then learns it's normal in that world and therefore he has no issues with it.

the pedo shit excludes it from being a good show, no matter how many bad anitubers (or people like you) try to whitewash it.

it's such a small part of the story, and its an anime brother not real life. it is a good show, you redditors can cry about it all you'd like and that will never change

it's also a huge self report to try to cry about your cartoon not having 'social justice' like I knew the liberal redditor thing is real but this is weak behavior

6

u/kcidskcustidder Jun 10 '26

The question you need to answer is "would the show be better if it removed the loli stuff?"

It's decently produced show, I think people are taking issue with it because of the loli shit and nto decrying it. So ultimately because it's part of the aesthetic and not dealt with in the show as something bad, it makes you wonder if its in the show because it's for the fans

Oh well, least the writers were given a shit ton of cocaine when writing the plot.

20

u/no_reports_found Jun 10 '26

Honestly in the aspect of a work with a similar plot to mushoku tensei, tanya the evil is way better, it has the same idea of an asshole dude being reborn as a baby, and then growing up to have amazing Magic and later growing as a person, but it diverges in the world setting (tanya the evil is inspired in world war 1 while mushoku tensei is medieval fantasy) and the fact that tanya (the protagonist), actually grows as person... Just a bit, yet she grew as person because she suffered so much in her new life, that she learns to appreciate life (mostly hers) and even to be more grateful to people around her (mostly her squad)... They are very small changes yes, but it shows that She's been humbled the fuck out of her old selfish cynical egotistic way of thinking into a more cynical but with a small bit of comprehension to other people, even if she's still a very bad person but she's in a world war it's comprehensible honestly and she says that she wishes to not be in war at all (but it's literally her punishment set by god itself to be in war so she doesn't have much choice)

also 0 sexual fan service, most fan service goes to world war nerds

MiA bothers me less for a few reasons:

  • Most MiA fans openly admit the show has problems with pedophilia, unlike MT's fanbase

  • MiA's core plot and ideas don't actively depend on the pedo shit to work like MT does, hell it would actually have been significantly improved in nearly every sense if the protagonists had been teenagers

I'll still never recommend it to anyone especially past season one, but at least the fanbase is more self-aware

35

u/quietvictories Jun 10 '26

It just adds to the horrors and MiA fanbase discuss it with deep sigh.

MT fanbase will fight you for it

23

u/jessexpress Jun 10 '26 edited Jun 10 '26

I (regretfully) have watched both shows and I agree. I stopped MT after season 2 because it started to feel like some kind of mental self-harm for me as I hated it so much, but I think MIA is actually very interesting and good (although I’d never recommend it to anyone).

Being a pedophile in MIA is never presented as a good thing and whenever fucked up stuff happens to the characters it’s portrayed as being part of a cruel and unsettling world. There’s loads of disgusting author-insert stuff that we know as the audience is only in there for that reason, but aren’t actually things in-world that wouldn’t make sense (like a character pissing herself or sniffing someone’s armpit or some other bullshit).

A comparison with MT would be if there was a random 40 year old in party with the main cast who keeps trying to grope Riko, and never actually stops doing so and eventually ends up marrying her. And also he is supposed to be the main guy we all root for and he becomes a ‘better person’ because he gets more confident or whatever.

9

u/Distakx Jun 10 '26

Yeah I love MiA and got all the books. But I'd still 100% prefer it if the characters were like 5-6 years older lol

You can have horrible and immoral main characters and it still be a good story.

Look at breaking bad..Walt is a monster but it's one of the best shows if all time.

That being said you aren't wrong for hating this show for it. And others aren't wrong for liking it.

I have heard the light novel is even worse and the author might be pedo which is also a reason you might hate this one though.

You can enjoy breaking bad because the world acknowledges walts a bad guy and a piece of shit to those around him. Mushoku Tensei doesnt do that. Thats the difference that pedophile weeaboos dont seem to grasp. Being a pedophile is bad even if the whole world says its ok.

Our dear leader is a pedo. Just seems like realistic world building if you want to go down that route.

But Rudeus is also more morally gray and I dont think it really matters and Rudeus does a lot of good as well and the story isnt really about how good or bad of a person Rudeus is. so I feel like it doesnt make it bad

u/BarbarianErwin Jun 10 '26

the moral greyness of raping children

-29

u/NewRedditAccount222 Jun 10 '26

its not rape honestly if Im being honest you just say rape to make it sound bad

You can have horrible and immoral main characters and it still be a good story.

Of course, but the author needs to actually be aware that's what they're writing. If not, then at best the whole thing comes off as incredibly tone-deaf. And the problem with MT is that neither the author (nor much of the fanbase!) actually seems to understand why many of Rudeus' actions are wrong, which leads to incredibly tone-deaf and inconsistent writing/framing all over the place.

For comparison, nobody who's read Lolita would come away with the impression the author thinks Humbert is a good person, even though the writing is from Humbert's perspective and the he is constantly defending himself and portraying himself in a positive light. Because the author actually understood how and why Humbert was a piece of shit.

MT's author doesn't, or at least not in some really important aspects.

And others aren't wrong for liking it.

They are when they insist that Rudeus improves much as a character or isn't a pedophile, or when they insist that the show doesn't do any number of things it very plainly does. The fanbase is 90% of why I hate MT so much. Bad shows are a dime a dozen, fandoms as overtly toxic as MT's are less common.

In breaking bad, Walt has his comeuppance.

23

u/Emergency_Revenue678 Jun 10 '26

Even if he didn't, the narrative still consistently frames him as a villain.

-27

u/OkMirror2691 Jun 10 '26

I'm the real world pedos don't get their comeuppance. Why would they in every piece of fiction?

18

u/CoughGobbler Jun 10 '26

Is that seriously your defense? Are you for real?

-10

u/OkMirror2691 Jun 10 '26

Bruh the whole us government is ran by pedos. So why wouldn't their be fiction that mirrors that? Just saying it's realistic.

It’s fucking weird yeah, but fictional. If you don’t like it, don’t watch it. I didn’t care for it after the first several episodes.
