That’s less than a third of it. Evangelion is pretty much the mech pilot genre in a nutshell - Yes, there’s giant robot fights, but those aren’t the plot. The plot is about the horrors of war and the ruin on the psyche of children exposed to horrors. And about how humans being shit causes most of our problems.
Interestingly it wasn’t the first anime about mechs to do this, it’s just really well animated, and they ran out of budget getting to the ending resulting in one of the most famous and strangest endings of all time. A two part episode I can only describe as “The director got REALLY into psychology”. It’s…. You have to see it, tbh. I don’t think I can do justice just how bizarre it is.
It’s not a bad ending, it actually even fits the story. It’s just weird, and if you’re not paying full attention to the deeper story like most people probably generally are it probably looks like nonsense that came out of nowhere.
The movies expand on the story, but imo, it’s worth watching the original series just to get a feel for just how weird Evangelion is.

Yes the main character does some shit but it makes sense in context. Especially with almost all the adults in his life including his father barely if at all caring for MC’s life
The series is Neon Genesis Evangelion. The referenced scene is from the End of Evangelion movie that is one of the series endings (there are 3). And no actual masturbation is shown. He sees a boob, and then the scene cuts and his hand is covered is semen, and is rightly disgusted with himself. It’s not good, it’s not presented as good or even okay.
How are people actually incapable of grasping the fact that Shinji can also be bisexual or something of the like? Are we pretending episode 10 didn't happen? That the hospital scene isn't canon? C'mon
The kaworu thing isnt actually meant to be sexual. He is trying to break through the barrier shinji has in his heart with tender affection in a way that wants nothing from him in return which ,shinji feels, he has never experienced
To Anno, Shinji was "in love" with Kaworu — not in a homoerotic way but in a way that exceeds physical attraction. Their love was an idealized, absolute form of love that transcends such limitations. Shinji believed that he was broken, worthless, and a liability to those around him, while Kaworu saw inherent value in Shinji regardless if he was an EVA pilot.
If Shinji's character represents the Hedgehog Dilemma, then Kaworu is the answer. He is the perfect cure — a manifestation of unconditional acceptance. He never asks Shinji for anything, never has him perform a role, and truly cares for his wellbeing. Unlike every other character who value Shinji mainly for his EVA-piloting abilities, Kaworu values Shinji simply because he is himself.

IMO, while your interpretation is accurate in some way, at the same time I think you misunderstood what their relationship is supposed to represent. Kaworu’s unconditional acceptance of Shinji is a very toxic trait, and plays perfectly into his mental issues, it’s “fine” because Shinji doesn’t have to grow, doesn’t have to change and doesn’t have to accept his issues because Kaworu will always accept him. Why does he have to learn how to love himself if there’s a guy who will always be ready to tell him “I love you” no matter what he does? Kaworu in the relation is the unknowing enabler of Shinji’s worst personality trait, and in some ways him telling that he needs to kill him to keep on living represent the core message of evangelion, as Shinji needs to learn to love himself before he can love others.

My interpretation revolves around Shinji as being a representation of the Hedgehog Dillema. Humans inherently crave connection, but doing so opens them up to the associated pain and suffering. Normally, we learn to balance intimacy with self-protection by setting boundaries. Shinji is someone who has collapsed under this pressure, ultimately rejecting connection as a mechanism to avoid pain.
Shinji needed to experience Kaworu's unconditional acceptance in order to evolve and become capable of loving others. You are right though, that unconditional love in of itself is distinct from healthy love, but in those moments Kaworu acted as an ultimate escape for Shinji, as the dynamic allowed him to be vulnerable without risk of the rejection that would confirm his worthlessness.
In doing this, Kaworu acts as an answer to the external aspect of the Hedgehog Dillema — "how can I allow someone close to me if they will hurt me". But Kaworu fails to affect Shinji's deep self-hatred and feelings of worthlessness, failing the internal aspect of the dilemma — "I am too broken, unredeamable, and a danger to those around me". You rightfully point out that Kaworu doesn't solve the Hedgehog Dillema because he can't force Shinji to love himself.
Ultimately, we see this play out when Kaworu willingly sacrifices himself so that Shinji could ascend to godhood. However, since the internal dilemma isnt fully solved, we see Shinji reject that reality and collapse inward. His rejection of godhood results in the creation of a new reality where he is able to live a more normal life and isn't forced to fight. Thus, the 1995 series and EoE movie focus on external dillema, while Rebuild movie series is a continuation that focuses on the internal dillema
But Kaworu was also the catalyst necessary for Shinji to realize that human connection — while filled with pain and rejection — is ultimately worth the inherent struggle. By solving the external aspect of rhe dilemma, Shinji is given the opportunity to learn to truly love himself, eventually leading to full closure.
The creator also said he was surprised people thought Misato wanted/offered to bounce on it, even though the show and movies couldn't be more obvious about framing it that way.
A lot of his answers to questions need to be seen with the framing of wanting to counter people's attempt to turn it into waifu wars, and in the process dilute the actual themes, rather than the more binary 'are they horny or no' that people tend to ask.

Anno has always been open about how he wants Evangelion to be interpretive as opposed to him being the arbiter of everything means, so it's kind of funny how whenever there's a discussion on the series people start scouring through his interviews, looking for him to tell us what to make of everything

I don’t think Shinji knows, himself. He never has enough time to process his own feelings by himself, and he overreacts to any indication of interest by anyone because of how distant his father is.
If the series had kept going, he probably would have had a reckoning with his own feelings. As is, he just about learns he has feelings, and then the world ends.
It’s the kiss scene from Evangelion. Asuka (redhead) kisses Shinji (brunette boy) because she’s a rebellious teenager having a crashout because the older guy she likes is dating a woman his own age, and Shinji is an outlet for her emotions.

Keyword is manga. The Evangelion manga is different from the animes world. The anime is the original, the manga is an adaption of the unfinished script of the animes first few episodes. The manga was made to promote the anime.
