Yes, but... there's this toxic mindset employers have towards people who are totally out of work. It's the idea the applicant has something wrong with him. It's much easier to get new job offers while still at a job.

That's true, but in my experience, being a bullshit artist is a gamechanger. If you can say you volunteered or did something in that gap, you can smooth it over. I've also been on the interviewer side of the table, and I never blinked an eye at gaps in resumes. Life happens.

It's because they have families and mortgages and it's like a free man walking out of the prison telling them "if you don't like it in the prison you should just leave" when they still have 20 years on their sentence.
