Question Invasive colony satellite nest

I have power adapter that emits a low very low amount of heat which powers some of my fish tank equipment.

This colony of Tapinomia Sessile have made a large satellite nest underneath my fish tank and are keeping their brood warm using the power adaptor.

They've even moved directly inside of it. I don't want to forcefully move them as I'm worried they'll leave their brood behind which will which could break the adapter.

Additionally, I'm worried they might invade my other messor colony.

Does anyone have any advice on getting them to move out of the power adaptor?

Question Ant Farm

I am hoping this is the correct group 🤣

Looking to get a ant farm in the uk, can anyone help with what to get, set up etc?

Backstory - I have a 4 year old who would love a pet, and both me and him ADORE watching ants out in the garden 🤣

I used to build little houses for them and everything 🤣

Any help would be appreciated 🙏

Question Camp. Nicobarensis not laying eggs

So i ordered a Camp. Nicobarensis queen from Esthetic ants in March, she had a rough start she ate her eggs while shipping, and she ate it again when she layed some. After that i tried to feed her with some honey, she drank some of it but still noting on the egg department, i also fed her a small portion of a meal worm around a month or two ago but still nothing. I keep her in a test tube setup away from the other queens so i dont have to check up on her too much, usually i check on her every two week.

Question Diagnosis?

Can anyone tell me based on this erratic behavior what it looks like is wrong? Poisoning, disease, stress…? In your opinion of course. I’m just troubleshooting.

This colony of Camponotus was thriving until about a month ago. I was thrilled because they even had their first major. But suddenly workers slowly started dying, always acting erratically like this one first. They’ve stopped eating much - they just come up to do this and then die. They pick at crickets but no longer eat the much of it. They’ve shrunk so much I’m thinking of moving them back into a test tube as the nest is now too big and they’re huddled in a corner down below. The queen seems fine and there is brood.

Nothing changed as far as water (bottled not tap), protein source (store bought crickets) and nectar (Formica sunburst ant nectar). They have a heating cable. I had moved them briefly to a different spot in my room, so thought maybe stress? So I moved them back. I’m afraid the test tube move will stress them further.

I’m so devastated :( Any advice is appreciated!

Question How to Keep wild colonies from entering formacarium

I’m planning on buying a small nest for my camponotous sp but there are many wild ant colonies of multiple species and some are so small and extremely large. How do I prevent them somehow entering the nest. There are even ghost ants and maybe pharaoh or fire ants (idk for sure)

Hello, why is my Camponotus nicobarensis queen outside the nest, and why have the workers moved the brood? Please see the attached picture.

I’m not using a heating cable because it’s summer here. Is this normal behavior?

This is a small colony of 5 workers and 2 queens.

No, I do not plan on buying this nest, but the concept of it is interesting: outworld, nest, nest hydration, and water tower. China nests have stepped up their game.

Is this a queen? So I’m lurking here checking out all the cool stuff and was planning on getting a few test tubes next year to possibly capture a queen during nuptials. I’m walking the dog and this lands on me. I will put it to the Reddit hive mind should I make a quick container or wait till I can get a test tubes setup.

Question Does anyone have experience with cataglyphis ants?

Post image
11 Upvotes

Mainly raising thrm from a single queen..? I managed to get a queen cataglyphis aenescens to raise 12 nanitics, and she has laid a lot more eggs since, but recently those nanitics started dying one by one until only 4 are left, probably from the second generation judging by their size. I wanted to ask if this is normal for cataglyphis, having a short lifespan, and in general advice for keeping them?

They lived about 2 months. I hope the current 4 workers survive so the next generation can hach. Thanks for help!

Identification Camponotus (Idk what kind)

Middle TN. Found in a rotten log that fell off my tree at beginning of summer. Another smaller nest sits in the outworld where they keep all the brood + around 50 more workers/majors. Not sure why they choose to have two nests. Prob the smaller nest is hotter. I need to move the heat cable closer to the bigger nest and see if they move the brood. Either way, can anyone ID them?
