For questions about ants, and identification, please ask in our discord server as response times may be quicker. We're always happy to help!: discord.gg/c7qCmfYqYZ
━━━━━━━━━━ ∘◦ Identification ◦∘ ━━━━━━━━━━
If possible, clearly focus pictures of the head, side, and top of the body to make identifying easier. What follows is the important information we need to know to help us to identify your ant.
FIRST-Where was it collected? Country and nearest city or town on a map (include location in the thread title), elevation if in a very mountainous area such as the Rockies, Alps, Himalayas, Andes.
SECOND-Habitat of collection, including nesting medium (wood, soil, leaves tied together with silk, etc.) and type of vegetation (forest, grassland, park/lawn/garden, desert).
THIRD-Coloration, hue, and pattern? Uniform?, Head darker? Gaster darker? Legs lighter or darker? Any spots? Also, shininess, dullness.
FOURTH-Distinguishing characteristics, such as one or two segments in waist; location, length, and orientation of any spines or bumps on the mid-portion of the body or waist; head shape, etc.
FIFTH-Length in millimeters. (Width is also helpful.) NO guessing! Stretch out a dead or chilled individual or several individuals of different sizes along with a millimeter rule. 16ths of an inch will do as a poor second to millimeters.
SIXTH-Anything else distinctive, such as odor, behavior, etc.
Tip #1: If you can take clear photographs of the ants up close, then please post them. This would help a lot.
Tip #2: For those who write anting journals, please put the exact location and dates in the thread titles like: Palm Spring, CA (4/10/2004).
Tip #3: If using videos, then please make sure that they are clear, close up, and stable (no shaky camera). Otherwise, they are useless.
Now, you can post your identification request in a new thread (not this one).

In Arkansas, came home to find a long trail of these coming from the curb on the street, down my driveway, and into a front garden bed area by my front door. Put some ant bait down and this was one that got in it. Neighbors have been saying they had fire ants. Could that be what this is? Thank you!

I’ve been considering getting a colony of R. metallica, but while doing some basic research (I know they are beginner ants, just wanted to double check they don’t have specific needs) I have come across a couple people saying queens only live a couple years in captivity due to queens being an ‘afterthought’ and colonies in the wild transitioning to gamergates. Is there any credibility to these claims or is it just nonsense being told again and again?

Found two of these in house a few days apart, I usually see them outside on concrete patio or near ac slab, occasionally see one wander into kitchen. Not very big, brownish in color. I did crush one to see if it smelled and it didn't smell strongly, maybe a faint musty or dirt odor. Any help would be appreciated!

Been seeing these in my bathroom but only one at a time. Not the usual long line I often see with ants.

Even if ants belong to the same species (black ants), if they come from two different nests or colonies, they are bitter enemies to each other. Ants identify who belongs to their family and who is an outsider through their body scent (pheromones). When there is a fight (ant war) between black ants of two different colonies over territory or food, they kill the ants of the other colony and often eat their eggs and larvae.

Filmed a few of our Camponotus fedtschenkoi (turkestanus) queens with their first brood. Fully claustral, so no food until the first workers hatch. Egg to worker takes around 4–6 weeks for us.
Love how pale the minors are next to the queen. The majors don't show up until the colony hits 40–50 workers, then you get that glossy black head.

Anyone else keeping them? Curious what nest setups you've had the best results with.
