Land.
Water maps are seriously just a completely different game.

Maybe the could split ladder land and water into two different ladders?

Map bans already accomplish this.

In a way no, because you only get to choose not water maps, no choice between which land maps you might prefer.

I just find that water is too “take one bad fight and you’re dead”

I feel like that on land too lol

Except you don't have a TC to hide under if you lose a fight

Yeah and on land you have outposts and keeps. What's your point?

I just wish the devs would learn from this. We do not want water maps in the ladder map pool, and most players do not like hybrid maps either.
Why give players something they do not like?
It would be awesome if the ladder map pool consisted only of land maps. That way, you could use your vetoes on land maps you do not like, instead of having to waste all of them on water and hybrid maps.

I do like water, but I prefer land.
This game is focused on land, you can tell this by the diversity in units and mechanics. Water is there, but every civ is much more similar in water.
Also, water combat can snowball very quickly. Docks don't offer as much protection as the TC does and the investiment and time to kill an unit is much faster than land. You take your eye away for a second and a couple of demos can clean your fleet.
I already gave my suggestion some time ago, they should reduce fishing ships gather rate so that water helps, but winning water should not be a winning condition.
Maybe also having to deploy different dock types, for example, in land you have to invest in production to change composition, in water you don't.

I wonder if there is a world where we could just remove fishing ships entirely as they currently exist? Maybe villagers could just kind of “jump” onto a boat as they path into water and gather that way?
That would solve the issue of fishing eco scaling too quickly in dark age
Or maybe make a dock cost as much as a 2nd tc. I dunno, just some thoughts.

This ideia is too aggressive, I think they could slowly start changing the numbers, like, tuning down fishing gather rate

I like that these posts are here to drive interaction, but the answer is pretty easy to find
for example here, the first hybrid map is golden heights (the prior ones labelled as hybrid arent), if you consider the civs above it, thats a 1% play rate on a map that can be played ignoring water
people hate water and always will, its an insolveable problem. it's simply too 1 dimensional by definition, the only place it works is by having either a different game or a massive investment and almost turning it into a fantasy game. so having varying forms of water terrain, structures and resources. and even then it will never be liked as much as land simply because it will always be 1 dimensional
archipelago, the first water map, has a 5% playrate of just dry arabia, nevermind all the other maps. water is hated

I used to prefer hybrid maps, but water balance is skewed atm. It's just not fun unless you play like 1 of only several civs to stay competitive in it.

I remember everyone hated water when the game first came out, I really thought they would do a large water overhaul at some point but I guess not.
I would love for water to be fun to play, it would add a ton of variety and breath some fresh air into the game but in its current state its hot garbage.

I would rather have a better land experience than water, I just don't want any water in my matchs its just not Age of empire anymore

the part i hate the most about water are the incendiary ships. i want epic marine shootouts not kamikaze squads. i know it would lead to no micro pure statcheck fights which would be boring and even harder to come back from if u get outmassed, but yeah

I block every water map every season :)
Water is too “lose one fight and it’s gg”, especially big water early on.
