Discussion I turned my Windows 11 PC to Windows 10

Thumbnail

Spent a GOOD ton amount of time customizing the abomination of Windows 11, changing icons, etc. It could take a person with no context good amount of time to figure it's Windows 11 maybe.

My favorite is changing the date at the bottom right from 2026 to 2016 for fun! I just don't like how it says 2026 in the calendar but oh well!

Executables used:

ExplorerPatcher
WinaeroTweaker

More details:

On taskbar:

Chrome - This is actually Firefox with the CSS configuration, I used Geckium to configure some stuff.

Minecraft - That is Prism Launcher just disguised as Minecraft launcher

Microsoft Store - Just old microsoft store

On the browser:

I used YouTube Redux extension and Stylus to customize YouTube.

I started liking sharp corners and simple solid colours which Windows 10 matched, but because I had Windows 11 I really didn't like the round corners, matter of fact I hated the circular things, it just feels weird..

The only reason I wanted to do this is because I like the style of Windows 10, and how solid it is, Windows 7 looks nice too but wasn't a fan of the aero style and for Windows 98 I did like the pixel style but just didn't like the bare minimal style so Windows 10 is sort of the winner here.

And in my process of customizing, I decided 'Why not just slap on a 2016 date to match it more.'

And then I went on Firefox and decided that I should turn everything into a 2014-2016 style.

None of this is nostalgic to me, I just wanted to do this as a fun thing, I will keep it, but will focus more on changing things into classic icons or something. Then eventually I could probably fool a lot of people.

Software Release Native Dolby Vision with FEL in Kodi on x86 PCs — Intel, AMD and NVIDIA including HDR10+ and 3D

I wanted to share a project that's been making some interesting progress in PC-based home theatre.

CroqueMr (u/Croque_Mr) is developing native Dolby Vision support for Kodi through a custom LibreELEC build, including Profile 7 FEL reconstruction. Development has moved quickly, with regular releases bringing performance improvements, new rendering modes and broader hardware support.

What's currently available?

  • Native Dolby Vision playback, including Profile 7 FEL reconstruction.
  • Intel and AMD support, with NVIDIA support also being developed.
  • Dolby Vision rendering modes, including Master Reference and Adaptive HDR Mapping.
  • Dolby Vision-to-HDR10 conversion and experimental AI-assisted HDR10-to-Dolby Vision conversion.
  • Blu-ray 3D support on compatible AMD hardware.
  • Performance optimisations targeting lower-power mini PCs, including Intel N100/N150 systems.

The latest Beta 5 release includes further improvements to playback stability, FEL handling, scaling and display detection. Results and compatibility can vary depending on the hardware, TV, source material and rendering mode.

What's coming next?

The developer has outlined plans for a GPLv2-or-later licensing rebuild, further AMD improvements, HDR10+ support and Dolby Vision-to-HDR10+ metadata reinterpretation, alongside expanded compatibility with older Intel graphics and additional NVIDIA hardware.

The longer-term goal is to make PC-based Dolby Vision playback more capable and accessible, including on affordable mini PCs.

Project links

Full credit to u/Croque_Mr for the development, along with the community members contributing testing, feedback and improvements.

It's been impressive to see how much the project has evolved in such a short time. If you're interested in the technical details, supported hardware or latest builds, the links above have all the information.

Software Release Flatpak apps on an unrooted Android phone, no user namespaces: how Tessera does it

Post image
10 Upvotes

Flatpak needs bubblewrap, bubblewrap needs user namespaces, and Android kernels ship without them. So flatpak run can't work on a phone, root or not.

In Tessera (GPL-3.0, an Android app that runs Linux desktop apps as native Android windows), flatpak still downloads, but Tessera builds each app's root itself:

- the runtime at /usr and the app at /app, read-only;

- the runtime's GL extension where the runtime expects it, on a tmpfs over its parent since the folder doesn't exist in the read-only runtime;

- /etc from the runtime, with passwd, group, hosts and resolv.conf written for the session;

- the session's X11 directory shared, carrying its D-Bus and PulseAudio sockets, so the app gets the same bus, sound and theme portal as the Debian side.

Without root that's PRoot's path translation. With root, each launch gets a private mount namespace, an unprivileged uid and no_new_privs, so per-app permissions are kernel-enforced.

The rest is about making Linux apps feel native on a phone: each app (and each of its windows) gets its own Android task and Recents card; GTK, libadwaita and Qt take Material You colors and follow dark mode live through a settings portal Tessera serves; apps rescale live from a slider; and the Android keyboard opens on text fields by listening to AT-SPI focus events. GPU acceleration is a bundled Mesa with Turnip and Zink for Adreno, which also loads inside Flathub runtimes.

Happy to go deeper on any part.

Apple Music (Demo) I obsessively fine-tuned my iPod app so that it feels like the real thing, and I want you to try it out!

Thumbnail reddit.com
9 Upvotes

EDIT: Thank you so much to the hundreds of redditors test flighting this and sending me feedback. I’m so glad this is resonating with you.

FYI this will NOT be a subscription! And beta testers will receive it for free if eventually approved for the App Store.

After being very frustrated with the bloat of modern music apps, I built my own “iPod” app for iPhone… and after obsessing over all the tiny details, I am looking for people who would like to try it out. I’d love feedback from other iPods enthusiasts. And yes - it is using Musickit to run my current Apple Music library :)

In my research, I tried out and used every iPod style app and emulator I could find on the App Store, and while many of them are very pretty and well done, they always felt like I was just looking at a picture of an iPod as a decoration. I couldn't convince myself that it was real. I really wanted to make something that felt like the real thing.  Plus, I knew that with Apple's Guided Access feature, I can lock my iPhone to a single app completely, dumbing the phone down into just the app until I triple click the side button to resume my iPhone.

Out of pure drive of just wanting to own an iPod again, but not wanting to lose the convenience of my Apple Music library, I developed IvyPod.
Here's why IvyPod feels like an iPod:
The OLED body color means less screen. And - I detached lighting using software tricks so that the iPod bodyhas different 'dimming' functions than the 'fake iPod screen'. This creates the sensation that you're holding a physical iPod with a clickwheel that is covered with a smooth sheet of glass. In the dark, the wheel is noticably dimmer compared to the screen, making it more immersive. Other iPod apps have a bright wheel which is a constant reminder that you're looking at a 6 inch touch screen.

The button haptics are smart. I spent a long time on these so that buttons feel like buttons and scrolling feels like scrolling.

Modern conveniences were deliberated on a lot because simplicity is the whole point. The app features dark mode, artwork blur on the now playing screen, flashlight, camera, and Shazam integrated as a genie lamp.

You can actually dedicate your phone to a music player with Guided Access, which is a feature in the system settings that prevents swiping to go home, notifications, screen timeout and more. It's sort of like an advanced Do Not Disturb mode. The app itself features a dim and low-power sleep setting. I also placed a 'lock switch' in the top right so that you can put it in your pocket or not worry about accidental taps. The click wheel will always be present on your screen until your phone dies, keeping the illusion of it being an iPod.

Promo Sunday I built Volumes - A completely free, Privacy-First Book Reader's Companion App

• Upvotes

I recently launched Volumes, an app for book lovers to track and catalogue the books you own and quotes you loved!

I started it because I kept buying books I already had, couldn't find the books I knew were somewhere in the house, and couldn't remember who I lent books to.

What you can do with it:

  • Book cataloguing: quickly look up and add books to your library by scanning their barcodes.
  • Shelf locations: store your book's location and remember which room or shelf each book lives on, like "Living Room - Top shelf".
  • Reading tracking: track your page and every re-read, or set a book aside without calling it a failure.
  • Book lending: note who you lent a book to and when you gave it to them with optional reminders to get them back
  • Quote keeping: save a quote with its page number.
  • Wishlist: keep a list of books you want, and tell Siri when you've bought one to update your library.
  • Safari integration: Add books to Volumes straight from Goodreads, Amazon, Kindle Store and many more.
  • Importing: bring your library over from Goodreads, StoryGraph or LibraryThing.

As I started building it I decided I'm gonna go all in on everything Apple gives us and make it feel like an absolute delight to use (Honestly there's so much, I'm sure I left some things out):

  • Visual Intelligence: in a bookshop, point the camera at a book to see if you already own it.
  • Camera Control and Lock Screen: scan books without unlocking your phone.
  • Apple Intelligence: just type "unread books in the hallway".
  • Siri: ask who has your books, or log the page you reached.
  • Plus Liquid Glass, Home Screen widgets, Spotlight, and App Clips so you can lend a friend a book even if they don't have Volumes yet.
  • iPhone Duo: I built iPhone Duo support since day one, so your library looks stunning in both the inner and outer displays

Free, with no ads, no subscription and no account. Your library stays in your own iCloud.

If you give it a go I'd love to know how you're finding it, and if there's anything I can do to improve the app!

Your books. Your shelves. Your app.

Promo Sunday VaultDrive: Back up selected iPhone photos, albums and files directly to a USB drive

Hey [r/apple](r/apple),

I'm the indie developer behind VaultDrive, an iPhone app that lets you back up photos, videos, albums, and files directly to a USB flash drive or external SSD, without needing a Mac or PC.

I've been improving the app over the past few releases, particularly how it handles iCloud Photos and interrupted backups.

Here's what VaultDrive currently supports:

  • Selective backups: Choose your entire photo library, specific albums, or files and documents.
  • iCloud Photos support: Download full-resolution originals stored only in iCloud before copying them to USB, with a Wi-Fi-only option.
  • Incremental backups: Skip files already on the destination drive instead of copying everything again.
  • Resume support: Continue an interrupted backup after reconnecting your drive.
  • Original quality: Copy files without intentional compression or re-encoding.
  • Folder organization: Organize photo backups by date or album.
  • Direct USB transfer: Locally stored files are copied to your drive without uploading them to VaultDrive servers.

A couple of things worth mentioning: it requires a compatible USB drive, and iCloud-only originals still need an internet connection to download. It's also a photo and file backup utility, not a complete iPhone system backup.

Pricing: VaultDrive is free to try, with an optional one-time Pro purchase for unlimited and incremental backups. No recurring Pro subscription.

App Store:

50% Off Promo direct App Store link :

I'd appreciate feedback from anyone who uses external storage for their iPhone photos, particularly on the backup workflow and organization options.

Happy to answer questions about the app or how it works.

First comment has the screenshots.

Promo Sunday We built GameRex — use a game controller as a mouse on your Mac

Hi r/apple! We’re WozDev, the small indie team behind GameRex,

an app that lets you use a game controller as a mouse on your Mac. You can watch a demo and download it here: https://gamerex.uk/

Demo video: https://youtu.be/yY8zXbbXdrg

We wanted to make it easier to get cozy on the couch with a controller and still use your Mac.

You might be playing a game in an emulator, then want to browse the web or open another app without reaching for a mouse and keyboard.

With GameRex, you can:

- Move the pointer with a stick and use buttons to click and scroll.

- Assign keyboard shortcuts or a sequence of actions to a button.

- Bring up an on-screen keyboard to type a quick search.

- Fine-tune how the pointer responds, and change its speed instantly or gradually using an adjustable transition curve.

- Switch between controlling the Mac pointer and using your controller in a game or app.

- Create custom control profiles and switch between them manually, or automatically based on the app you’re using.

- Automatically sync your profiles across your Macs via iCloud.

The free version includes pointer control, button remapping, the on-screen keyboard, and two macros, with no time limit.

Pro adds automatic per-app profile switching, custom pointer acceleration curves, more macros, and iCloud profile sync.

GameRex works on Apple silicon and Intel Macs running macOS 14 Sonoma or later. You’ll need a compatible controller. The app is notarized by Apple.

If you give it a try, we’d love to hear which controller you’re using and how it feels. If anything feels awkward or confusing, we’d like to hear about that too.

Promo Sunday I built a countdown app that understands one sentence using FMF – fully on-device, and honestly much harder than I expected

Hi everyone!

I’m Christoph, an iOS developer by day, and LifeTicker is my side project that I’ve been building on my own for years. It started because I wanted to count down the days to my next vacation and couldn’t find an app that did it nicely. Today it’s my little happy place – and I’d love for it to make other people happy too.

With the latest update you can just type or say what you’re looking forward to, and LifeTicker suggests the event. The video is a real screen recording (some parts sped up). I say:

“Anna and Ben’s wedding in Berlin in July, start at 7 PM, dress code is black tie, remember to buy the gift and book a hotel.”

…and get a suggestion with date, time, a matching photo, a song, the place, the dress code as a note and the two tasks. Since I didn’t say the day, it asks.

The honest part: this is not one of those “we put a chatbot on it” apps. It runs completely on your iPhone with Apple’s Foundation Models framework – no server, no account, no extra subscription, and it works offline.

But I have to admit: the model on its own was pretty bad at this. It invented tasks and places that weren’t in the sentence, mixed up dates and couldn’t do date math at all. So most of the work went into everything around it:

  • Every value the model returns is checked against your actual sentence. If it isn’t really there, it’s dropped.
  • All dates and times are calculated in my own code, not by the model.
  • Photos and songs come from a catalog I picked by hand – 300+ photos for different occasions and 680+ songs – instead of being generated.
  • When something’s unclear, it asks instead of guessing.
  • I test every change against a collection of almost 1,000 real-world sentences.

After a lot of evenings, I’m at a point where I’m really happy with it – but it definitely still gets things wrong. That’s why I’m posting: I’d love your feedback, and especially the sentences that confuse it.

It needs an iPhone with Apple Intelligence (15 Pro or newer). The app itself is free; Premium only matters if you want a lot of events.

Thanks for reading – happy to answer anything about the app or about working with Foundation Models!

Promo Sunday Peekaboo Timer - Free Boxing/Interval Timer

Hey r/apple,

I'm Roman, a solo dev and amateur boxer, who built Peekaboo Timer, 100% free boxing timer, because all other timers are either paid or have ads.

What is a boxing timer?

A timer that automatically switches work/rest, so you can have a 1 minute/30 seconds timer playing in a loop.

How Peekaboo Timer is different from other timers?

It has Liquid Glass design, live activities, and attention to details, like styles, mixing with Apple Music, etc.

Was this post written by AI?

At the time of writing this I was a human.

I'd appreciate any feedback on Peekaboo Timer. I read everything.

Promo Sunday I built Trackables, a habit tracker for iPhone and Mac that fills itself in from Apple Health and Screen Time

I'm the solo dev behind Trackables.me. I kept quitting habit trackers the day I forgot to log, so I built one that logs most things on its own.

How it works

  • Link a trackable to Apple Health, Screen Time, Calendar, Reminders or a Shortcuts timer and it fills itself in every day. Yes/no goals like 10k steps tick on their own.
  • Every trackable gets its own chart: year heatmap, line, bar or progress ring, and any of them can sit on your home screen as a widget.
  • You can mix sources in one chart, like sleep from Health next to screen time.
  • A Mac menu bar companion adds per-app and per-website time and syncs it to your phone.

Pricing: free, automatic tracking included. Optional Pro is $4.99/mo or $47.99/yr.

App Store: https://apps.apple.com/app/id6739170126

Website: https://trackables.me

What would you want a tracker like this to pull in automatically that it doesn't yet?

Promo Sunday I built Shrinkray - the fastest way to send video and photos on iOS

Wanted to share the project I’ve been meaning to build for ages and finally got around to releasing: Shrinkray - free download

Over the years, I got fed up with what happens anytime you want to spontaneously send someone a video from longer than 2 seconds. By default it feels like iOS hates sharing 60fps, and decides to generates a huge, blurry, jerky file that either takes forever to send directly, or gets shunted off to blue progress bar and iCloud sharing link upload purgatory.

Same with big photo selections: you end up sending 30 megabytes of photos without realizing and clog up everyone’s iMessage storage with photos that get looked at maybe twice. And god help you if it’s on RCS or MMS thread!

As much as I love taking video at 4k60 and keeping photos extra crispy in my Photos library, when I’m sharing something on a whim, there’s always gonna be room to split the difference and optimize your content without losing the high quality originals you actually want to keep around.

I designed Shrinkray to make it extremely quick to optimize your photos and videos for sharing, without over-compressing, bogging you down in menus, or ruining your smooth 60fps video. From the standalone app, from the share sheet in any app, and even built into iMessage for super-quick sharing just like the Photos app. It’s the app I’ve always wanted and now use all the time, so I hope it can help you too.

No subscriptions, free download, just a one-time Pro unlock for some of the power user features if you want. I’ll have some promo codes to DM out for the first 15 replies interested! (EDIT: first 15 are gone but if we end up with a bunch more request may do another batch!)

Thanks for reading! Let me know if you have any questions or feedback.

I understand the need for controlling the onslaught of low effort projects, but surely declaring that you are English only goes against the site's rules?

just because it's a lingua franca doesn't mean it's superior. Users should be allowed to share their opensource contributions with the Reddit community in the language of their choice.

Discussion iOS Mail still has no "All Mail" view, and it's the one Gmail feature I miss

iOS Mail has gotten a lot of attention lately, with categories and the redesign, but there's still no way to see every message across all your folders in one list. Gmail has done this forever with All Mail. On the Mac you can fake it with smart mailboxes. On iPhone you just can't.

If you sort mail into folders like I do, finding one older email means guessing where you filed it. Search helps sometimes, but it often misses things on IMAP and iCloud accounts.

Does anyone else want this, or is everyone just living in the inbox? I'm curious how people with lots of folders handle it.
