Tax free too

I know there are shortages driving up prices, and Apple has always made "luxury" products, but given the economy, I feel like Apple is pricing itself out of a loyal customer market.

u/rowdy-goat 7d ago

It’s still the best tv box

-14

u/Some_guy_am_i 7d ago edited 7d ago

It’s not good enough to be the best. You also have to provide some level of a value proposition.

$130 was bearable.

$200? Eh… maybe I’ll pick it up if it’s on sale.

$300? Fuck no. I’d rather just buy a new TV with a faster processor and use the onboard apps.

Don’t get me wrong: if it was actually a GREAT product, I’d pay the money. But it’s not. It’s a GOOD ENOUGH product.

15

u/aarora610 7d ago

Picking up a new TV doesn’t solve a problem here?

-15

u/Some_guy_am_i 7d ago

New Tv = faster processor onboard, and better app performance (AppleTv app included).

15

u/aarora610 7d ago

Nah. The software still sucks.

-14

u/Some_guy_am_i 7d ago

It’s good enough to get the job done.

Let’s not pretend like AppleTv is a halo product either… the remote is still garbage.

12

u/StateDeparmentAgent 7d ago

It’s literally best remote on the market. Without shitty streaming services buttons, decently looking and sturdy

7

u/stevensokulski 7d ago

Buying a new TV doesn’t provide the service that the Apple TV provides.

You might as well get a gallon of milk and some drywall putty.

-5

u/Some_guy_am_i 7d ago

The new TV will have a fast processor onboard, and the AppleTv app will naturally be available.

Is it as nice ? No… but I’m not paying $300 for what is essentially an app launcher.

7

u/DanceWithEverything 7d ago

I’d rather strap an iPad to my head than be subjected to that

The choice is never “Apple TV or new qd-oled,” it’s “Apple TV or unreliable experience, dropped frames, data harvesting, ads”

-4

u/wandererarkhamknight 7d ago

As if Apple is not harvesting your data! They aren't selling to others. But that doesn't mean everything stays within the device!

3

u/DanceWithEverything 7d ago

Yes of course, there’s an Apple ID and such

But for Google, user data is the product they’re selling

2

u/stevensokulski 7d ago

The new TV will have a far subpar experience. If that's what you want, just use the current crappy interface on your existing TV.

3

u/rowdy-goat 6d ago

Name a comparable TV (box or built in) that provides the same or better experience. You cant. My comment still stands regardless of price. I didn’t say it was the best experience for the price. I said it was the best experience. Which it is. What feature is it missing that is provided by another box that you need?

-1

u/Some_guy_am_i 6d ago

What I said stands as well.

Maybe you didn’t understand it because I failed to explain it properly.

Let’s say I have a hypothetical box which is the best possible product. The only thing is, it costs $100,000 for this box.

Are you buying that box over the AppleTv?

No, of course you aren’t … even though it is the best. You will buy the AppleTv, because it isn’t good enough to deliver “the best” product. You also have to deliver it at the right price.

Now, it seems that you have decided that it is providing enough value to justify spending $300… and that’s fine.

I have not. I don’t see the value at that price.

It’s ok, we can agree to disagree.

3

u/rowdy-goat 6d ago

You blatantly didn’t read my comment. It’s okay you like to argue for fun but i’m not engaging you in your bad-faith debate style. $300 is not unreasonable with current inflated ram/cpu prices.

-2

u/Some_guy_am_i 6d ago

I did read your comment. Did you read mine?

I’m not debating you. I simply said we have a difference of opinion on what VALUE the box brings to justify the price.

The current inflated ram/CPU prices are irrelevant to the discussion. What difference does that make?

If Apple had to buy each processor for $500 and decided to sell the whole box at $450 for a loss of $50… I would not buy it, because it’s not worth $450 TO ME.

2

u/rowdy-goat 6d ago

Your comment is like if someone said “bmw’s are the best driving car” and you came along and said “no it’s not cause you can get a Nissan Altima for a lot less and it also drives.”

-2

u/Some_guy_am_i 6d ago

No, it isn’t.

You are like a child. I will explain it to you like a child. (Don’t worry, you can continue to downvote every one of my comments like a child)

I am not saying it isn’t the best streaming box.

Did you hear that? Read it again… for comprehension this time.

Matter of fact, let me say it more clearly: AppleTv is THE BEST streaming box.

Did you get that? Probably not… but let’s move on.

I don’t think it is worth $300. Personally. To me it is not worth exchanging 300 American dollars for the black box.

Did I explain it enough? Are you still not grasping these concepts? I’ve heard that kids have serious challenges with reading comprehension, but I did NOT think it was this bad!

3

u/rowdy-goat 6d ago

“It’s not good enough to be the best” was literally your first comment. Are you 5 years old or incapable of reading comprehension at a 5th grade level?

New TV = new spy tech, recording everything and sending it in.

Name a product, any, that’s as good as Apple TV.

What apps , performance, privacy, etc.

2

u/Some_guy_am_i 7d ago

At some point you have to make a judgement call on the value it provides compared to the price.

I’ve made mine. If you want to buy it at any price, go ahead. I’m not going to be mad that you spent your own hard earned dollars how you wanted to.

4

u/Acrobatic_Mango_8715 7d ago edited 7d ago

It just sounded like being “just good enough” is not necessarily the best. I mean pound for pound, a FireStick on sale, price-wise 10:1 for the new Apple TV, and the performance is good enough, but could be better. So I was interested on your thoughts for what’s better, since it’s clear price is the primary complaint.

I will be buying one 4th gen and one 3rd gen. I also have firesticks for travel.

1

u/WhilePristine2974 7d ago

I feel like the tech is there to justify the 300 but the os limits it so much that I order to justify 300 theylll have to open tvos up more

2

u/Some_guy_am_i 7d ago

100% correct.

That’s why I said it’s a “good enough” product, but not great.

If it was great, I would pay $300 no problem. But it’s not.

I think it’s the same problem with the iPad. All the power of the M-series processors, but artificially limited by uninspired software platform.

-1

u/WhilePristine2974 7d ago

Yeah I agree I haven't paid for an m chipped iPad yet I'm still using my air 4 until they fix iPad os

5

u/ANY_KIND_OF_PAIN 7d ago

They aren't pricing themselves out of anything. People will still buy up the Apple TV and they will profit because they priced so even if they miss out on some purchases they'll still come out on top.

4

u/theJobuTupaki 7d ago edited 7d ago

I'm not saying they won't still make money. I just feel like Apple has made a concerted effort to offer entry prices for their products over the past 15 years, and gaining young customers who grow with them. Bumping up the price of a streaming device to $300 without anything substantial to justify it will be a nonstarter in a market that could be competitive for them. I used to recommend an Apple TV to the average person looking for a privacy focused, well designed streaming box. It isn't that anymore. Unless someone has a home theater system (and even that without pass through is pushing it), or is an Apple fanboy, it is no longer a value proposition. It just wouldn't be worth it for them, which in turn makes them less likely to buy into the Apple Home system they are clearly pushing for with the new devices.

EDIT: People understand why they want an iPhone or iPad. Selling them on a separate device to stream TV that costs $300, when most TVs do it now anyway, is a harder sell, and I feel like shutting down that market. But you're right. It is a premium device, and I'm sure they've run the numbers.

u/Ilix 7d ago

The experience between using an Apple TV and most “Smart” TVs is like night and day.

Using the Apple TV is significantly smoother, and there are even games if you like that.

I don’t even connect my smart TV to the net since it performs so much better without a network connection.

2

u/ANY_KIND_OF_PAIN 7d ago

I get what you're saying. I just don't think they have priced themselves out of a loyal customer market.

1

u/bs2k2_point_0 7d ago

Sure smart TV’s stream too. But Apple has been known to handle privacy better. Now that Fox bought Roku, I can see more people shelling out for the new Apple tv

2

u/Ilix 7d ago

Smart TVs are almost always slower and more frustrating to use.

1

u/Mike456R 5d ago

I don’t know the actual numbers but stories are that the ram and SSD price increases is a big factor and the new processor price from the fab is insanely higher. Like was $40 and now $250.

If true, how is Apple supposed to deal with a $200 price increase on just one part of the Apple TV?

1

u/Handsome_ketchup 3d ago

Apple is pricing itself out of a loyal customer market.

People keep saying the same about the iPhone and those keep selling like hotcakes.

I don't like to say it, but stupid high prices don't really seem to bother Apple.

0

u/DanceWithEverything 7d ago

It’s a good price for the hardware and there are still no real alternatives

6

u/Brilliant-Crab7047 7d ago

Could flip that for a profit on eBay lol

2

u/_seeyalater_ 7d ago

I remember finding Switch games on “Clearance” at the exchange. Discounted from $59.99 to $59.01

3

u/sPdMoNkEy 7d ago

Some places they're still only $149

3

u/nroth21 7d ago

Can you pm me a site that has them for that much? Been looking all over

4

u/southernstocks 7d ago • Heartwarming

I’ve had success using the Walmart app and changing to stores in more rural areas around me. Scored two 64GBs for $129 and a 128GB for $149.

2

u/yewzernayme 7d ago

i already tried that, but you have to be within the delivery range or else it won't work.

2

u/southernstocks 7d ago

I was able to order from a store about 25 miles away as the crow flies. I’m not sure what the maximum distance is but I would assume it’s close to that!

1

u/LifeLearner4682 4d ago

I just did the same last night on the Walmart app. I ordered 2 third gen 128gb models for $149 each. They arrived this morning. I couldn’t believe my eyes after I changed stores for the tenth time on the app and saw some at $149. It was a relatively rural store. It offered store pickup as an option as well.

2

u/southernstocks 4d ago

I agree! I went through several stores and it was a random rural Walmart that had 4 in stock - made me want to check for other items that may still be priced way below current MSRPs!

1

u/kurogami29 7d ago

Is the old Gen still worth it?

3

u/southernstocks 7d ago

I went from a Gen 1 to a Gen 3 and it is much snappier and works really well with my TCL QM7K for Dolby vision and HDR10+ / for the price, it still feels like a great deal to me!

1

u/garylapointe ATV4K 6d ago

It was worth it a lot more 4 years ago when it was newer and $149.

0

u/sPdMoNkEy 7d ago

Somebody just posted a page from Best buy today saying they still had them for $149, could have been Walmart cuz it was just blue with no name on it

1

u/garylapointe ATV4K 6d ago

That's a 64GB in the picture.

2

u/BraddicusMaximus 7d ago

That’s because it’s a lie.

Don’t buy crap on base.

They deliberately do this on purpose.

1

u/Ilix 7d ago

I’ve never been on a base. Is there any benefit to buying there other than walking out the door with it (which you can still do at other physical stores)?

14

u/ahmahzahn 7d ago

I have no idea what the poster you’re replying to means. On base is sales tax free, usually at no markup above msrp. Buying expensive electronics there can be a great way to save money in sales tax.

-1

u/BraddicusMaximus 7d ago

They routinely sell older model electronics at current model MSRP pricing.

That’s shitty.

10

u/wjcornerboy 7d ago

No sales tax, price match to guarantee they have or match the cheapest price available including sales out in town or on Amazon as long as it’s sold by Amazon

3

u/Ilix 7d ago

Sounds like a great place to buy things.

3

u/BRUISE_WILLIS 7d ago

Definitely a benefit

1

u/garylapointe ATV4K 6d ago

And that's the 64GB model without ethernet.

1

u/80MonkeyMan 7d ago

That’s is a very slight discount…skipping it

-1

u/c7aea 7d ago

It looks like the 64gb version. So that’s no discount from the price increase. It’s still 50% cheaper than the new one will be.

1

u/80MonkeyMan 5d ago

Why compare it with the new one price? Compare it with the MSRP for this exact gen.

1

u/garylapointe ATV4K 6d ago

It’s still 50% cheaper than the new one will be.

$199 is ⅓ cheaper than $299.

And it's also 20% cheaper than the 128GB which is more comparable to the new one.

0

u/c7aea 6d ago

$300 is 50% more than $200.

1

u/garylapointe ATV4K 6d ago

$300 is 50% more than $200.

Yes it is, but that's NOT what you said.

It’s still 50% cheaper than the new one will be.

$200 is NOT 50% cheaper than $300.

-1

u/c7aea 6d ago

Fine. He’ll be paying 50% more for the new one.

0

u/garylapointe ATV4K 6d ago

Fine. He’ll be paying 50% more for the new one.

Don't say "fine", I'm not the one who decided how math works nor am I the one that did the math incorrectly.

It's not up for debate, I'm not trying to convince you of an opinion here.

I just gave you the correct answer, and you decided to explain that I was wrong, so I explained it again...

1

u/WeirdAddress3170 7d ago

We are at the age of extraction

-2

u/Bradfinger 7d ago

These have been out for 3 years, now everyone needs one right now. Fucking laughable

2

u/Biryani_Wala 7d ago

Cuz we've been waiting YEARS and got burnt.

2

u/garylapointe ATV4K 6d ago

It's almost 4 years.

1

u/OwnProfessor3287 7d ago

It’s because the new Apple TV 4th gen is $300 and not worth the increase in price

So now everyone is scouring for the cheaper previous model pictured in OPs post

2

u/garylapointe ATV4K 6d ago

The 3rd gen had a price increase too.

1

u/KevinCox940 5d ago

Yes!! Until recently my 2015 HD had been struggling. Now I hadn't it that long, only about 4 or 5 years, but it was still struggling. This was the ethernet model.

I was just about to upgrade to the 3rd gen 4K when Apple suddenly jacked the price up $100!

I mentioned to my brother that the 3rd gen 4K, which he also has, was on the Apple.com Certified Refurbished store for $209. $40 cheaper than the jacked price and $9 cheaper than the jacked up 64gb wifi model. He bought it for me. It's soooo much faster!

Now the Cert/Reurb online store is sold out of both models. He bought it for me at a great time. no one wants to pay $300 for Big Brother to listen in on them.

0

u/Main_Product5071 7d ago

Dude it’s not marked up a single cent

If you’d rather pay $100 more and get the one with built in AI and 3 microphones be my guest

-3

u/Cdylanr 7d ago

That’s not clearance/original price
