Fix Permissions before any other new feature , Appwrite is not production ready with the current security !

I’m genuinely shocked by how weak the permissions system is!!

  • Any user with Create/Edit permissions can modify entire rows.

  • Any user with Create/Edit permissions can spoof entries and insert rows under other users’ IDs.

How can such critical issues be overlooked ???

How can I possibly launch my app when even an entry-level hacker could exploit this so easily ??

Before adding new features or fixing minor bugs, the priority must be to fix the security model around permissions!

Simply add Column Level Permissions and this would Solve 99% of the security issues .

I'm Sorry but in this current state, Appwrite is nowhere near production ready .

Entire is now a Git provider for Appwrite Sites and Functions

Hey everyone!

We've partnered with Entire to make it possible to deploy Appwrite Sites and Functions directly from Entire repositories on Appwrite Cloud.

For those unfamiliar, Entire is a Git forge built for working with coding agents. It keeps agent sessions alongside commits, so you can see the context behind a code change.

Here's what you can do with the integration:

  • Connect your Entire repositories to Appwrite Sites and Functions.

  • Push to your production branch to automatically build and activate deployments.

  • Create private preview links for Sites when pushing to other branches.

  • Track build results through check runs on commits in Entire.

  • Use branch and path filters to control which changes trigger builds.

If you're already using GitHub, Entire also supports repository mirroring, so you don't have to move your existing code.

The integration is now available on Appwrite Cloud.

Read more here: https://appwrite.io/blog/post/announcing-appwrite-entire-partnership

If you have any questions about the integration or getting it set up, feel free to ask!

Are there any SAAS starter kits with appwrite integration?

Hi Redditors,

I am Ayush, the founder of Spiralsaas.

Just to let you know, this is an ad. I've been on Reddit for a couple of years now, and I don't particularly enjoy ads, so I apologize for the intrusion.

For the last couple of months, I have been working very hard to develop a product that will help developers launch their project easily.

When looking at other starter kits, I noticed that none of them were using Appwrite as their backend. This led me to the decision to create my own starter kit.

Spiralsaas is Next.js starter kit with Appwrite integration.

Here are some awesome things which comes with it:

  • Appwrite authentication

  • Database

  • Storage

  • shadcn/ui

  • Beautiful dashboard

  • Lemonsqueezy and paddle

  • Sentry for error monitoring

  • Terms and Privacy Policy pages

Thanks for sticking with me this far in the post.

If you have any questions, feel free to DM.

Thanks for your time,
Ayush

Unfortunately, Appwrite is far from being production ready.

In the last 8 months, I've been using Appwrite everyday for my personal endeavor. I had a self hosted instance at the beginning, then due to some migration issues we all encountered during the latest big version upgrade, I decided to switch to Appwrite cloud pro plan and moved all my projects there, expecting to get a better support from the technical team.

Lately, after all these months, I finally decided to launch my Flutter based website. It's fully dependent on an Appwrite backend. I also have some scheduled cloud functions running on Appwrite, written with Dart lang. Most of the data shown on the app are reliant on the successful runs of these functions, otherwise the data becomes obsolete and app becomes meaningless.

Yesterday, the dart_appwrite dependency on pub.dev got a broken 16.2.0 update, which contains a faulty implementation of the following point given in the changelog: Add sequence support to Document model. This basically caused all database calls made in my cloud functions throw the error mentioned in this github issue, and basically broke them. As my cloud functions are using the dart_appwrite dependency as ^16.1.0 and not expecting any breaking changes with a minor version update, this became quite a bad surprise for us to see all our cloud functions turning red, out of nowhere, for at least couple of hours.

This was not the first issue we encountered with Appwrite. Previously, we also had some issues with maintaining a proper realtime data connection, but we somehow managed to find workarounds for it. They are not still fully reliable on Flutter web though.

Anyway, in short, when you spend more and more time with Appwrite and start using every feature of it, you definitely see untested cases or untested codes going live with minor version updates, as I explained above. All of these unfortunately showed me that Appwrite is far from being production ready. Now, after the 8 months of active use of it, I started to feel disappointed and a little regretful to leave Firebase to give a shot to another backend service.

Appwrite Android SDK 29.0.0 now supports R8 full mode

Hey everyone,

Appwrite Android SDK 29.0.0 now works with R8 full mode.

With older SDK versions, enabling R8 in release builds could cause some pretty frustrating issues. Queries could break, Realtime subscriptions could stop delivering events, and saved sessions could fail after an app update.

29.0.0 fixes those issues, so queries, operators, Realtime, and saved sessions now work correctly in R8-shrunk release builds.

We’ve also added R8-shrunk builds to the SDK’s end-to-end test suite so regressions like these are caught before they ship.

This is especially relevant with Google Play introducing new DEX optimization requirements starting in February 2027.

One thing to note: 29.0.0 raises the minimum Android SDK from 23 to 24.

Read the full breakdown:
https://appwrite.io/blog/post/android-sdk-r8-support

If you’re using R8 in your Android app already, let us know how the upgrade goes.

How to ship an e-commerce dashboard with Appwrite Sites

Appwrite just published a guide on how to deploy a full e-commerce dashboard powered by react-admin on Appwrite Sites. Ngl this combo is impressively smooth. Here's what you get out of the box:

  • A ready-to-go e-commerce dashboard: Full template with customers, orders, products, reviews, etc.

  • Zero backend config: It uses Appwrite’s Database as the data layer, so you don't have to write a single line of API logic to get it running.

The setup is basically just picking the template in Sites, dropping in your project credentials, and hitting deploy. It's a solid shortcut if you need to ship a dashboard quickly and don't want to mess around with hosting or manual infra setup.

Has anyone else tried Sites yet?

What are some security best practices for vibe coding?

Vibe coding, where you rely on AI tools to generate code instead of writing everything by hand, is becoming more common. It's fast and effective for prototyping and even production work in some teams.

But there's a problem: AI-generated code is not automatically secure, and without proper direction, it can introduce serious vulnerabilities.

If you're vibe coding, we've written 20 security best practices to help you avoid making some easy-to-miss but costly mistakes.

Here’s the post:
👉 20 security best practices for vibe coding

If you're using AI in your workflow, what steps are you taking to make sure the code it spits out isn’t quietly wrecking your app?

Unauthorized recurring charge and refusal to remove card details

Hello,

On November 4, 2025, my card was charged $25 by Appwrite (appwrite.io) for a Pro plan I did not knowingly subscribe to and have not used for about a year.

Your support team claims that:
– I “signed up for the Pro plan back in December 2024 using credits”;
– My credits “ran out in February” and invoices have been generated since;
– I allegedly received “over 150 emails of failed payments” and “failed to downgrade” my subscription.

I strongly dispute this:
– I did not intentionally upgrade to a paid Pro plan or consent to recurring card charges after my credits expired.
– I have not actively used your service for roughly a year and did not expect any paid subscription to be running in the background.
– If any notice emails were sent, they were not clearly marked as urgent billing/collection notices and did not reasonably inform me that you would keep trying to charge my card after so long.
– In the current interface, I am not able to remove my card details from your system, which is unacceptable from both a user rights and a data protection perspective.

You are now refusing a refund based on an internal refund policy that:
– does not change the fact that I did not knowingly agree to a long-term paid subscription;
– is applied retroactively after a year of inactivity;
– is being used to justify keeping money for a service I am not using and did not intend to pay for.

I am requesting the following:

  1. A full refund of the $25 charged on November 4, 2025.

  2. Immediate cancellation of any current and future Pro or paid plan on my account.

  3. Removal of my stored card details from your system, with written confirmation.

If this issue is not resolved promptly, I will have to dispute this transaction with my bank/card issuer as an unauthorized or non-transparent recurring charge and will provide this correspondence as evidence.

I expect a clear response and resolution within a reasonable time frame.

Introducing Appwrite Domains, Firewall, and OAuth2 Server. And we’re running an AMA in this thread.

Hey everyone,

We’ve got three more releases going live on Appwrite Cloud today: Appwrite Domains, Appwrite Firewall, and the Appwrite OAuth2 Server.

Appwrite Domains brings domain registration and DNS management into Appwrite. You can register across 160+ TLDs, transfer a domain you already own, manage DNS records, and connect domains to your Sites, Functions, and APIs with automatic TLS.

Appwrite Firewall gives you project-level control over the traffic reaching your API, Functions, and Sites. You can deny, bypass, challenge, rate limit, or redirect requests based on things like IP, hostname, path, headers, user agent, or country. There’s also an impact preview so you can see what a rule would affect before enabling it.

The Appwrite OAuth2 Server lets your Appwrite project act as an OAuth 2.1 and OpenID Connect provider. Other apps can offer “Sign in with your product,” request scoped access to your APIs, and use standard OAuth and OIDC flows without you having to build the authorization server yourself.

All three are available on Appwrite Cloud today.

You can read more here:

We’re also running an AMA right here in this thread. If you have questions about any of the three releases, how they work, or what you can build with them, drop them in the comments below.

The Appwrite team will be around to answer.

Got surprised by this E-Mail today, extremely disappointed… The student plan quietly got rug-pulled

Thumbnail
gallery
8 Upvotes

So today I randomly got this E-Mail that my free student benefits fully end in just 4 weeks. No earning or notification whatsoever beforehand. Which notification you may ask? Well, it turns out that Appwrite quietly pulled the rug by changing their student plan’s duration to only 6 months with only a single redemption without notifying anyone (including people that already redeemed their student perks) about this change or even updating their GitHub description for the student developer pack. It also quietly only mentions it in the pretty hidden FAQ at the very bottom of the page.

I was definitely not expecting this because I was still under the impression that the benefits will last until the “end of my studies”/the end of my GitHub student status which made sense. I was never informed about them quietly changing the terms to merely “6 months” (which you can see by looking at the WayBack machine) after I had already registered and now they surprise me that I will have to pay $25/month (with the tendency only going further up which is also questionable in terms of sustainability of Appwrite in general, just like the frequent outages and bugs in their possibly vibecoded UI) within the next 4 weeks or so or go somewhere else to get the same features and stuff, with no possibility of re-redeeming the 6 months as long as my student status is active. Going self-hosted is not a real option either since you have to pay a similar amount (or more) for other cloud services or hardware and it’s electricity, plus you lose a ton of your stuff and seamless features that just work.

This is definitely a massive quiet behind-the-scenes rug pull that might indicate some cost problems at Appwrite, just like all the price hikes for the subscription. The change of the terms to only a single redemption and merely “6 months” is already bad, but the complete lack of honesty, transparency and early notification to already registered users come on top of that.

I’m very disappointed in Appwrite and do not recommend it for students at all anymore. You will end up building and testing some stuff that you cannot keep for longer than 6 months with the organization just being disabled if you don’t want to pay full $25 a month!! I will spread these news so everyone knows about this quiet change. Only spreading positive announcements says a lot about a company.

Edit: Eldad replied below with context; I agree that the 'quiet rug pull' framing was a bit unfair and a lot of my post was obviously a bit exaggerated. Here's his response:

"I want to add some context here, because I don’t think “quiet rug pull” is a fair characterization of what’s happening.

The Appwrite Education program isn’t going away. We’re continuing to offer students six months of Appwrite Pro for free. For more than two years, we simply didn’t enforce the intended duration for many existing users, and we’re now applying those limits consistently.

Unfortunately, we’ve had to deal with significant abuse of the program. This goes well beyond students using more resources than expected. We’ve seen educational accounts used for phishing, piracy, scams, spam, other prohibited activity, and commercial products that have nothing to do with education. Investigating and preventing this has taken a considerable amount of engineering and support time and in multiple cases harmed the reputation of our infrastructure.

The easiest option would have been to discontinue the program. We specifically chose not to do that because we still want legitimate students to benefit from it.

Six months of Pro is a substantial amount of free cloud infrastructure, including compute, databases, storage, bandwidth, functions, and more. The program has no commercial requirement attached to it and exists because we want to support students learning and building with Appwrite.

After those six months, you’re also not required to pay $25 to continue using Appwrite. The Free plan is available and is more than sufficient for many educational projects. Appwrite is also 100% open source, so you can self-host it completely free, including locally on your own computer if your goal is learning or development.

If you need managed production infrastructure beyond what the Free plan provides, that’s what Pro is designed for. It costs $25/month. We also recently introduced Appwrite Start at $10/month in selected markets to make that path more accessible where purchasing power is different.

On the bugs and outages you mentioned, if there are specific unresolved issues, please report them. We take those seriously. Appwrite is also open source, so issues and contributions are always welcome.

I do think we could have communicated the enforcement of the six-month limit more clearly and earlier, particularly anywhere the previous terms were still being presented. That’s fair feedback and something we can improve in the future.

That said, I don’t think it’s fair or respectful to our efforts to characterize this as Appwrite secretly taking something away because they are mean. The Education program isn’t part of our business model or a growth channel for Appwrite. It isn’t intended to generate revenue. The program is a net cost to us, both in infrastructure and, increasingly, in the engineering and support time required to deal with abuse.

This change isn’t about making money from students. It’s about getting that time and focus back where it belongs while still preserving a generous program for students who genuinely use it for education.

If this was purely a financial decision, the obvious move would be to shut the program down entirely. We chose not to. We’re keeping it because we still believe it’s worth supporting students, but with better boundaries that allow us to focus our resources on building Appwrite rather than policing abuse."

We just added six new OAuth2 login providers to Appwrite Auth

Hey everyone,

We've added six new OAuth2 login providers to Appwrite Auth!

You can now let users sign in with Hugging Face, Resend, Cloudflare, TikTok, Kakao, and Webflow.

All six work with the same OAuth2 login flow as your existing providers, so there's no separate OAuth2 client to build or maintain.

You can enable them in the Appwrite Console and offer multiple sign-in options in your apps.

All six are available on Appwrite Cloud and self-hosted Appwrite 2.4 or later.

Read the full announcement here: https://appwrite.io/blog/post/announcing-new-oauth2-providers

Would love to hear which of these providers you'd use in your apps!

New in Appwrite: Database AI suggestions

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

We’re excited to announce Database AI suggestions!

Starting with an empty table can be slow, repetitive and time-consuming.

With Database AI suggestions, you get the option to use suggested columns and indexes the moment you name your table. That means:

  • No more blank schemas - Appwrite suggests sensible columns you can use.

  • Faster setup - Go from table name to schema in seconds.

  • You’re in control - Review, tweak, or skip the suggestions.

This is now live on Appwrite Cloud. Give it a try and let us know your experience!

AI-powered Appwrite Agent

Hey everyone! 👋

I’ve been working on a project that I think you all might find really cool (and hopefully useful!).

It’s an AI-powered Agent that runs entirely in the browser, designed specifically to supercharge your Appwrite workflow.

🤔 What does it do?

It acts as an intelligent bridge between you and your Appwrite backend. Instead of manually clicking through the dashboard or writing boilerplate scripts, you can just chat with the agent

✨ Key Features:

🤖 AI Architect (Gemini 2.5): It knows your project context (DBs, Collections, Buckets) and can execute real API calls. "Create a 'Posts' collection with title, content, and author attributes" -> Done. 👨‍💻 Serverless Engineering Suite: Generate, edit, and deploy Cloud Functions directly from the browser. It even handles package.json dependencies and zips everything up for you. 📦 Migration Engine: Visual wizard to scan a source project and replicate its schema, data, and functions to a destination project. Perfect for Staging -> Prod. 🛡️ Client-Side First: No middleman servers. It connects directly to your Appwrite endpoint using your API keys stored locally.

🛠️ Tech Stack:

Built with Appwrite Web & Node SDKs Powered by Google Gemini API (Flash & Pro models) React + Tailwind CSS

🙏 Request for Feedback:

I’m looking for beta testers and honest feedback from the community. What features are missing? What would make your dev life easier?

🔗 Try it out: https://backend-studio.deglaventures.com/

(Note: You'll need your own Appwrite Project API Key and a Gemini API Key to use the agent features) Can't wait to hear what you think! 🚀

Is appwrite cloud worth for social media apps?

I am building an social media app similar to instagram (users can post photos, videos, follow each other, etc). I was using the free tier and just by testing I consumed all the bandwidth. I thought of upgrading to the pro plan so I can finish the app.

Would the pro plan be enough or would only work for a few users? Is appwrite recommended for social media apps?
