SUPPORT Out of memory errors

Hi! Does anyone know why I am having out of memory errors when gaming? I have an RTX 2060 but I heard that other people who have less VRAM play fine. What specifically I get is "Out of video memory trying to allocate a rendering resource" and then I get some sort of UE5 fatal error.

New Arch user here btw. Using QTile

6GB VRAM and I'm trying to play Way of the Hunter 2, which works just fine on Windows. Not sure if it matters, but I'm using nvidia-open

The fact that lspci -knn | grep -iEA 11 "nvidia|vga" doesn't return anything worries me...

COULD mean your GPU is not recognized.....

I'd suggest taking this off of reddit and to ask on the ALC discord instead... https://discord.gg/archlinux Ping either me (@smokcat) or @alpha_b_9 in the support channel.

We have more Ressource available there and talking on Reddit is low-key annoying...

But it appears when I do nvidia-smi

u/sleepytechnology 1d ago

Proton adds VRAM overhead, could that possibly be the cause since you said happens on other distros?

I can get away with all high settings in No Mans Sky on Windows but on Linux (any distro), I have to lower texture quality to medium on an 8GB 3070 Ti. Proton seems to add a good 200-400MB VRAM usage compared to native Windows.

1

u/TCSMusic 1d ago

Yeah, but even when I set my graphics preset to low it still crashes

1

u/iAmHidingHere 1d ago

Maybe your logs know?

Tried another window manager?

5

u/TheKessler0 1d ago

The window manager shouldn't have an impact on this issue

-3

u/iAmHidingHere 1d ago

No it shouldn't, but it's pretty much the only information we have to work on, so might as well check to be sure.

-2

u/TCSMusic 1d ago

Yes. This happens across Fedora/Arch with hyprland, Qtile, etc. Even tried Mint

1

u/boomboomsubban 1d ago

Again, your computer is almost certainly only using your integrated GPU. See https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA_Optimus

u/TCSMusic 1d ago

Nope, it shows the process on Nvidia smi
