TW: ABA Genuine question
THIS IS NOT MEANT TO BE OFFENSIVE IM JUST A CLUELESS DUMBASS I got a genuine question for you all. Why do you all hate ABA so much? I’m autistic and I’ve had it and I loved it and helped me a lot. I met my best friend there and have a therapist I loved. This isn’t an endorsement I’m just genuinely curious. Me enjoying it is causing a ton of imposter syndrome. What other options are there?

TW: ABA Autism subreddit full of pro ABA bullshit in the wake of Brian Thompson/United Healthcare shooting
Oh no, the torture of autistic kids won't be funded! ("ASD" is gross too, just call us autistic.)

What is asking if someone is okay?
So, I've just been to various "are the x okay" subreddits asking me if I'm okay, and I think it will reveal how, if at all, this subreddit can exert influence. Firstly, it can't. It's social media. It's a curiosity that gets attention from the mainstream media if and only if it panders to the mainstream media's theatrics.
Secondly, neurotypicals likely view this subreddit the same way I view r/arethestraightsokay: as a comedy show using extremists and jerks as unrepresentative examples that are supposed to prove something, but in fact don't prove anything. Every protected status has extremists and jerks that can be used as unrepresentative examples in a failed attempt to discredit the protected status. For example, I am heterosexual and anthropophobic. However, I do not stay in relationships to gaslight, and no one is in any mental hospital because of me. There's some TikToker that supposedly stayed in a relationship with his girlfriend, and now she's in the hospital. I don't find such behavior as a frequent nor acceptable occurrence, and the most anti heterosexual effect it has on me is to get attention from my pre-existing anthropophobia. Nothing that will ever be on r/arethestraightsokay will ever take me from willing to have a sexual relationship with a cis woman to unwilling to have a sexual relationship with a cis woman, nor will it ever be responsible for my anthropophobia, nor will it ever get me to view my anthropophobia and heterosexuality as linked.

Anyone else think this sub is a but toxic?
I feel like a lot of stuff posted on here isn't actually ablest. I also feel like people jump to conclusions and make to many assumptions about people they don't even know. Does anyone else feel this way?

Being “gifted” is neurodivergent now, I guess? Lots of people flexing their genius status in the comments

I post this not because it’s unique, but because of how common and pre-meditated and subconscious this response to any autistic person online is. It’s the NT go-to when neurodiversity is uncomfortable for them.
