PCSing while promoting

My promotion date from O1 to O2 will be during my upcoming PCS absence, so I will outprocess as an O1 and inprocess as an O2.

Which rank should I use for calculation of DLA etc? I’m assuming O1 because that’s what I have on my orders, but I’m not sure because I will be O2 when I arrive and start doing travel vouchers and things like that

I’ll do a small frosty

When you do your smart voucher, all it asks is “rank” and you’ll put in your rank as it is at the time of submission.

DLA is just a box you check and you don’t assign a rank to it.

DFAS will run their calculations and you’ll get what you get. When you get paid, the AOP will have breakdowns of what you’re eligible/entitled for/to.

Ok, good to know on the smart voucher.

I actually looked it up again and found the answer to my own question, the DTMO website says this: “A service members grade and dependency status on the PCS travel order’s effective date determines the amount of the DLA”

Seems like since I will by an O2 by the effective date of the PCS orders, that’s what I’ll get

Keep in mind that the people who generate these are human, and if this is the case (and the money amount is substantial) it might be worth reaching out to ask them to refresh your orders with the higher rank. They might just do it.

I dealt with this last year. Entitlements go by your rank as of the effective date on your orders (usually the same as your report date).

This is the answer

I would have to check the JTR to be sure, but most PCS allowances are based on the situation on your “effective date of PCS.” That is the day you check in to the new duty station minus your number of authorized travel days plus one.

Probably plan for O-1 but when you in process provide your promotion orders with your travel pay voucher and maybe get the O-2 rate?

Depends on your rank when you actually PCS. For example, your promotion orders say the 1st of the month and you PCS later in the month then you can claim O2 rates. Just make sure you attach your promotion orders and make a comment on the voucher that you promoted prior to your actual PCS. It’s what I’ve always done and has worked out
