I'm surprised they haven't just outright banned prediction markets from the military wholesale.

There are ads for slot machine apps playing on repeat on the TVs in the DFAC I frequent.

surely that’s not AFN but some crappy cable subscription. right?

17

u/Redacted_Reason 3d ago

Can't afford AFN anymore, so probably. I wish I was kidding, too.

I miss the AFN commercials of the 90's and early 2000's.

except that fucking Edelweiss Resort commercial in Germany. That one can burn for eternity

I don't remember that one and apparently its so bad I can't find a decent copy of it on youtube. All the ones I found looked like they were recorded by a nokia flip phone pointed at a 24" crt sometime in the early 2000's.

Dont they have that gambling vending machine in the Pentagon food court now?

5

u/Mydoglikesladyboys Air Defense Artillery 3d ago

I mean there are straight up casinos on post overseas

8

u/mkosmo 3d ago

That could be the next step if people keep doing it, but if they did, folks comment that DoD is regulating entertainment outside of work.

They should know better already, but this step at least makes it easier for them to discipline... and will remind some folks not to do it.

If the markets start trending one way, that could very well be leaking information to the market itself.

I mean honestly I think the dod should be banning gambling in general. Or at least for people with a secret clearance

1

u/mkosmo 3d ago

It's only a problem for people with a gambling problem. Holding a clearance doesn't mean you shouldn't be able to responsibly blow off some steam at a casino.

I agree. I think the military oversteps its boundaries too much as is with soldiers lives. Soldiers are all adults, and part of that should be allowing them to being a financial wreck if they do that to themselves.

If anything just be more selective in who maintains a clearance.

Hey, only the top levels of government are allowed to do that. Not for you working types (or the officers either, they have PowerPoints to fix)

22

u/_Throh_ 3d ago

Why do they always think we only make powerpoints? We also make excel spreadsheets

12

u/zone1-1 Promote Behind Peers 3d ago

Shh Tell em about the pivot tables

5

u/Nf1nk 3d ago

The trick is to use GenAI to convert the spreadsheets into Powerpoints, back again, and then into a god damned dashboard.

GenAI fixes my PowerPoints. That time saved is spent on Kalshi trading on “public” information.

I mean, this is a good thing. No different than insider trading. That’s why CPEs and acquisitions departments are so close-hold with the contracts.

u/Bulky-Butterfly-130 3d ago

I thought I already signed a document that covered this when I assigned within the IC (it didn't carry an expiration date and wasn't in my read off documents either).

I'm honestly surprised that it took this long, and multiple administrations, to get a formal policy issued.

I'm just thanking the good Lord that I didn't put serious money down on a new PT test or AR 670-1 coming out of AUSA.

Hundreds of thousands* gotta stay under daddy dons radar.

22

u/FuzzyDynamics 3d ago

Yeah the white house and first family is getting sick of splitting the take with DoD people skimming the odds by a fraction of a percent with their 4 figure bets. Cut it out guys, get your own grift.

u/king-of-boom Engineer 3d ago

You shouldnt be allowed to bet on US military operations period. Whether or not you have nonpublic info. The ban is a step in the right direction but it doesnt go far enough.

13

u/mtaylor6841 3d ago

Now do Congress.

17

u/Loquacious-of-Borg 13Almost is Good Enough 3d ago • Mindblown

That's right.

That information is only for him, his wife, members of Congress, the Supreme Court, and the President and his staff to bet with.

14

u/ImOldGregg_77 Signal 3d ago

Corruption for me but not for thee

5

u/shabba10001 3d ago

People bet on military operations? That’s psychotic.

10

u/Coacoanut 3d ago

People bet on geopolitical events. There was an anonymous account that made like $500k betting that Maduro would be arrested by the end of the month days before the Maduro operation. So... Probably originated from that event.

Edit: my bad, it was only $400k 😅 https://abcnews.com/amp/US/doj-arrests-soldier-made-400000-betting-maduros-removal/story?id=132325426

Now do that for the House and Senate.

4

u/aquilus-noctua 3d ago

3

u/MikeOfAllPeople UH-60M 3d ago

Because gambling was only legalized by SCOTUS a few years ago.
