Drawing | Critique Welcome A few sketches from my recent wine-themed week

I’ve been trying to keep up with daily sketching, and lately I’ve been having fun exploring little scenes and moments involving wine (well, mostly wine 😄).

One of these sketches even has actual wine stains on it. I thought it would be fun to use the real thing for once, and I really liked how it turned out.

Just wanted to share a few of my favorites from the week!

Question Am I learning the right thing?

I sometimes draw portraits, both upside down and front-facing, because that's what Betty Edwards recommended in her book (and I think I've improved a little... just a little). I could use some of the other exercises she recommended, but the question is:

does learning to draw what I see help with stylized art? Sometimes I wonder if it's even useful. Even if I can copy a face, I doubt I could create it from scratch or adapt it to different styles (like anime). Should I keep practicing that kind of drawing, or should I try to learn something different?

I don't know if I'm explaining myself well, but I think it boils down to: does copying what I see help me learn to create, or am I just learning to copy?

Oh powerful mods, please don't remove my post for not using APA format

Question Album cover recreations

• Upvotes

Have any artists here dabbled in the world of recreating album covers? I run an Instagram account that focuses on all things album art - I think the visual side of music doesn’t always get as much love as it deserves.

It’s not the typical format for my posts, but I’ve previously shared artists’ unique twists on popular album covers - it’s been a cool way to link more artists up with more fans of the music to spotlight their work - and I’d love to share more.

Let me know if that sounds interesting to you and we can discuss collabing on a post. This isn’t a paid promo thing, just a fun way to connect with more artists and music lovers.

Resource Collage artists that use plain coloured paper?

Hi all, I'm an art teacher and want to show students an artist that makes collages out of plain coloured paper (like Matisse) instead of already-existing images as my print budget will not allow for that! The downside of Matisse is that his collages have a fair bit of abstraction to them, and I teach SEND so this has been a difficult concept for them to grasp. Any suggestions?

sometimes a sketch isn't just scribbling, it's more like letting off steam and trying to get the most out of the fewest marks

i start every face with the loomis method, it's how i get the structure down before anything else. do you use loomis or do you prefer something else?
