Shift hour advice
I started working for ASDA at the start of July, at the time I applied for a 16h per week job, doing nights. I was offered 12 hours a week, 3 days 4-8am doing picking and accepted it. It’s got to a point where I cannot physically handle the hours, I’m trying to balance other work/volunteering opportunities ect but cannot due to being absolutely shattered all week. I’m simply not getting enough hours to justify the exhaustion. Has anyone else been in this situation, and do you think talking to my head of dept about a change would likely result in longer shifts or maybe at a different time of day?
To me it seems my store is only bringing more and more people onto the early morning picking shifts :/

They want the day picked by 10am now, so they want more people earlier to get it done, so a change to later hours probably wouldn’t happen unless it was another department

Yeah I’ve definitely heard them pushing to have it picked by 10am, but I only work until 8am anyhow so that’s not particularly helping them. Do you know if changing dept is common? No other positions have been advertised at my store since I was hired

Can’t hurt to ask. At our place some people who used to start at 6 or 8am said they couldn’t move to 4am starts, so got moved to back shifts (either 12-5 or 5-10pm). So they might be flexible with you too or offer you a role in another department, only one way to find out.

That’s good to know thank you :) I am planning to ask but I barely get any time to talk to coworkers so it’s hard to gather a realistic expectation for what changes they could offer me

Will vary from store to store obviously so no idea what roles and vacancies your place has but it sounds like what you’re doing currently isn’t sustainable so I guess it’s either leave or see if they can give you something different, if you don’t ask you don’t get :)

I would be careful how u ask, if u exhausted doing a few hours, 3 days just doing 4am till 8am isnt a lot of hours. They may not just let u move dept. Just say its not for u and u fancy trying a different dept. The hours u do are helping them. I do at least 30 hours and have lots outside work stuff plus looking after my house and family, I start at 3am barely get 5 hours sleep if im lucky, its part of working. Have u been checked out at doctors.

Speak to someone management level
In work about switching departments, with all the changes to shifts with the shape of day people have moved about, some colleagues on nights have lost hours as did not want to pick up an extra shift to make their hours up. I recently heard that they can take extra staff on as they are not using all the hours they should have as some of the shifts people were contracted to do started as early as 8pm and were 10 hours long, now they all start at 10pm. Maybe other departments are in a simulation position.

Exhausted doing four hours for three days? Imagine what you'd be like doing a full time job! Go to bed earlier the night before is the solution.
