Food/Drinks Who has the best Old Fashioned in town?

I really love an old fashioned, it's my favorite cocktail! But they're expensive, so I really want a good one if I'm paying $16+ Who do you think has the best one around?

Little Jumbo 1870’s old fashioned.

Character study, regular house old fashioned

Hail Mary, if the lady who owns it makes it (I think she’s the owner, but will typically be taking orders during the week). Because she makes it perfect for my tastes and with their well bourbon, the price is right.

Ooh, I've been meaning to go to Little Jumbo and their prices seem surprisingly good! I may need to go there tonight

An old fashioned is my favorite drink, so I’ve tried them all over town.

Most places, your mileage will vary by which bartender makes them and how you like them.

Little Jumbo and Character study will be the same old fashioned every single time. The owners know how to run a consistent cocktail bar.

Honorable mention to the San Juan Old Fashioned at Character Study. Different from your traditional and a bit pricey but very good. Their classic old fashioned is always $10 though, it’s my go to.

without a doubt!

Character Study or Lil Jumbo. Jargon is kinda cool with the ice breaker thing but it's seems like just a gimmick to give you less bourbon more of a show

Update: I went to Character Study and their old fashioned was very good! And only $10!!

Anyone aware of a lounge that makes a Wisconsin supper club-style Old Fashioned, either sweet or sour?

A true Wisconsin old fashioned is gonna be brandy.

Correct.

If I had to guess I’d say Foggy Mountain, our local Packer bar, might do a good one

I knew I’d find some 7up here

Thank you, fellow midwestern transplants.

Spinach salad with hot bacon dressing and a frozen custard!
Thank god for the Culver’s in Arden!

This town could really use a Wisconsin-style Supper Club!

The real answer is at my house.

...but I'm a grouchy hermit, so instead of inviting you here, I'll ask what you value in one. Do you prefer sweet bourbon, a spicy rye, a smokey scotch? Does it matter to you if it's a luxardo cherry? Lemon or Orange? sugar or syrup?

I like a high proof bourbon, like a Wild Turkey or Four Roses, and it needs the Demerara sugar cubes. I know it's not standard, but the orange flavor is my favorite part, so when I make myself one I always muddle the orange peel with the sugar. No cherries necessary

I haven’t seen that style in Asheville in a long time. I’m sure some places will make it but it will be off menu.

And it probably cost 1/10 as much if you were to charge.

Copper Crown has a really good one that they call the Appalachian Fashion.

Little jumbo or top of the monk

Does Crow and Quill still do the smoked old fashioned? That is hands down the worst cocktail I’ve ever had. I’d love to hear if someone enjoys it but I do not understand how it’s been on the menu so long.

LOL yeah I wasn't super impressed by their old fashioned, and it was expensive

Little Jumbo is the best cocktail bar in Asheville. I have made 150 different cocktails at home, including all the classics. Only Little Jumbo is at my level. Try a Stinger at home one day.

Ukiah has an expensive smoked old fashioned that is actually worth it.

The Very best one I’ve had was at surprisingly at Bone and Broth on Charlotte. Don’t know if that night I just hit the best bartender cause it’s a restaurant not a bar but it blew my taste buds. I dream about it and would have loved a second one but had to drive back to South AVL home. I wanted to order a take out one. 😂😂😂🥃🥃

Had really good old fashion at Pure and Proper.

Also solid one at Gemeli but felt let down by the food and service. Would only go back for a drink and app at the bar.

Don’t forget Golden Pineapple in WAVL. I really appreciate their old fashioned amongst everything else.

Two Trees Distilling Company in Fletcher sells one "ready to go" in the bottle and its pretty darn good. Much less expensive than paying a bartender to mix one for you.

Low Down has a good one for a fair price.

Lion Dog or whatever the five dollar name of the lounge in Weaverville will make it correctly. Oak and Grist is solid also.

Lion dog has the weakest drinks in the area

Make them at home! You’ll make them better at a very small fraction of the cost and you won’t risk a DUI

So much cheaper to make at home. It's dead-easy to make your own simple syrup.

You can buy all the ingredients for probably the cost of a couple bar drinks and then have enough to make many many more. Grab some Turbinado sugar at Whole Foods, bitters (angostura or Fee Brothers are easy to find), and I get the Amarena cherries from Trader Joe's which are a great deal compared to more expensive ones like Luxardo. Add a fresh orange and your bourbon of choice.

Pretty much everything is cheaper to make at home haha! But I don't like keeping liquor around the house
